Top 5 reasons to get the United Quest Card

Madison Blancaflor

Editor's Note

The United Quest℠ Card was unveiled in 2021, giving United loyalists another option within the airline's lineup of cobranded cards. It's a middle-of-the-road credit card option built for those who fly enough with the airline to want a couple of perks without shelling out $500+ for an annual fee on a super-premium credit card.

If you're wondering whether the United Quest Card is the right choice for you , here are five reasons you should consider adding it to your wallet.

Valuable sign-up bonus

It's always fun to get a card that comes with a large welcome bonus, and the United Quest has an outstanding bonus offer.

United is offering a sign-up bonus of up to 60,000 miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening, plus 500 Premier qualifying points (PQP).

quest to travel sign up

TPG values United miles at 1.45 cents each, making the full bonus worth just over $870.

The sign-up bonus alone is enough to offset the annual fee cost in your first year alone, but the perks don't stop there.

Related: New United credit card launches with unique perks

Statement credits offset the annual fee

The United Quest comes with a $250 annual fee, putting it between the United℠ Explorer Card ($95 annual fee, waived the first year) and the premium United Club℠ Infinite Card ($525 annual fee).

To help offset that cost, you'll get $125 per year in statement credits when you use the card to make United purchases. This benefit alone knocks the cost of the card down to $125 — only $30 more than the United Explorer Card.

Additionally, you'll get up to $100 in statement credits for your TSA PreCheck/Global Entry application fee credit every four years. That lowers the cost of the annual fee to only $25 for your first year. This isn't a make-or-break perk (plenty of travel credit cards offer the same benefit), but it is a nice addition to the card for those who don't already have a card that covers their TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee cost or for those who have multiple family members who need these fees covered.

Earn miles on more than just United flights

Airline cobranded credit cards aren't traditionally super rewarding when it comes to bonus points on spending outside of that airline, but that's not the case with the United Quest .

You'll earn 3 miles per dollar on United purchases (after earning the annual $125 United credits), 2 miles per dollar on all other travel (which includes flights on other airlines and more), select streaming services and dining and 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases.

There are certainly other cards that earn a higher rate of return on travel, dining and streaming services . But if you're looking to rack up United miles, it's great to see this card award bonus miles on more than just United flights.

Perks for frequent United flyers

If you are a semi-frequent United flyer, the United Quest card comes with some solid perks to help enhance your flying experience and pad your MileagePlus balance at the same time.

Every account anniversary year, you'll get 5,000 miles back in your MileagePlus account after you take a United or United Express-operated award flight booked with your miles. You can earn this benefit up to two times per anniversary year. That's up to an extra 10,000 miles back each year — worth $145 by TPG valuations .

quest to travel sign up

If you use this benefit and the $125 annual flight credit, that will essentially offset the cost of the annual fee each year.

Additionally, you'll get elitelike benefits, including priority boarding, 25% back on United inflight purchases, complimentary premier seat upgrades when flying on miles when available if you have elite status, and you and up to one other companion on the reservation will receive the first two checked bags free on United flights.

Related: Who should (and shouldn't) get the United Quest card?

Elite status boost

As a cardholder of the United Quest card, your purchases can help you reach elite status faster by earning PQPs after meeting a spending threshold.

quest to travel sign up

You'll earn 25 PQP for every $500 spent on purchases (up to 6,000 PQP in a calendar year) toward Premier status qualification, up to the Premier 1K® level. This greatly boosts those on the cusp of achieving the next tier of elite status but are short on PQPs.

Bottom line

There is a lot to love about the United Quest Card , starting with the sign-up bonus and continuing to the anniversary offerings when you renew. If you're a frequent United flyer, this card could be an excellent addition to your wallet.

Just keep in mind that this card does adhere to the Chase 5/24 rule . If you've opened five or more new accounts in the past 24 months, your application for this card will most likely be denied. However, having a different United credit card does not automatically disqualify you from getting this new card.

3 Steps to Signing Up with Travel Quest Host Agency

Travel Quest Network

So, you’re thinking of joining Travel Quest? That’s great to hear! My name is Angie and I’m typically the main point of contact at Travel Quest for agents new to TQ. I thought it would be helpful to do a little write up on the typical process of signing up with TQ.

Researching and Interviews

Starting way at the beginning, the best piece of advice I can give you is to research and compare host agencies. That way when you make your decision, you know it is the right one for you! If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend reading the Tips on How to Find the Best Host Agency post from HostAgencyReviews.com . It is full of really great advice and even has a nice Excel spreadsheet of questions to ask a host agency. We think interviewing host agencies is so important that we actually have an ‘interview’ stage with agents looking to join TQ. It isn’t nearly as daunting as it sounds—we just want to make sure that all of your questions are answered on us and, if you’re a newbie, the travel industry in general!

Registering Your Business & Getting an EIN

Registering a business name in the state you reside in is a good place to start setting everything up for your business. It is also something Travel Quest requires in order to sign up with us! We often get asked is it best to register as a Sole Proprietorship, DBA, or LLC. Any one of them works for us. To make sure you are doing what’s best for your business, we suggest consulting with a tax professional or accountant. Each state has different costs and processes set in place so be sure to check with your State Agencies for what you need to do! The Small Business Administration has a great list of filing requirements for each state . After you register your business, you’ll also need to get an EIN (Employee Identification Number) through the IRS. This is super easy to do online at IRS.gov .

Travel Quest’s Sign Up Process

Alright, you’ve been researching and interviewing host agencies and have made your final decision. I know that once you make that decision you want to get started right away so our sign up process is streamlined to get you set up in a jiffy.

We send all of our documents via an online signature program to make things super-fast and easy to track. Once you let us know you want to sign up there are just 3 stages:

TQ Contract and background check First up, we’ll send you the TQ Contract and background check. Before it allows you to open either documents, it will ask you some questions to verify your identity.

Sign up form Once we get those back, you get to choose what plan you want and pay the one-time start-up fee .

TQ Manual, W9 and direct deposit form After we get the OK from the background check (usually takes 1 business day), we send the last set of documents! The Independent Agency Owner (IAO) Manual just needs your signature that you’ve read it, the W9 is where you’ll put your registered business name and EIN number, and the direct deposit is for the bank account you want your TQ account to be hooked to.

And that’s it! Once we have received all of the required paperwork from you we email out your login sheet which opens up TQ to you! It gives you access to Travel Quest’s Portal, Commission Manager and trainings; Travel Leaders’ intranet & Learning Management System; and some of the most commonly used supplier websites. The length of time it takes from start to finish depends mostly on how fast we get the documents back. Typically you receive your log in sheet 3-5 business days after you fill out the TQ Sign Up form! If you have any questions along the way, everyone at Travel Quest is there to help! Now that you know the sign up process, I hope we get to chat soon!

Carson City to Canada: Get paid $5,000 for adventure of a lifetime hike on new trail

W hile playing in fresh, deep snow may be on the minds of many for this weekend, tourism officials in Carson City, Nevada, are already looking to entice two people to get paid $5,000 each for an epic adventure after the snow melts.

"It's a specific type of human being we are looking for," said Lydia Beck of Visit Carson City.

That is because Visit Carson City is looking to partner with two thru-hikers who are willing to tackle a 1,600-mile trek from the steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building to the end of the Pacific Crest Trail at the Canadian border.

Part of the quest, to be taken in the summer of 2025 is to document the journey on video.

The Carson City to Canada Quest is making this offer as one way to highlight the completion last summer of a 16-mile trail, eight years in the making, that now connects Carson City to the Tahoe Rim trail and the PCT.

“Once we realized that someone could start hiking right here in Carson City and take the Capital to Tahoe Trail to some of the greatest hiking trails in the world, we knew this would be a terrific opportunity to not only showcase our access to the outdoors but also to tap into something bigger,” said David Peterson, executive director of Visit Carson City.

Coincidentally, the application window for this $5,000, summertime offer opened Wednesday as some in the Sierra were still clearing snow from last weekend's blizzard conditions.

You do not need to be a Nevada resident to apply.

The deadline to submit your application with Visit Carson City is May 31.

Finalists will be contacted in late July.

And they're off! Cain's Quest 2024 kicks off in Labrador City

Race will cover more than 3,000 kilometres over the next week.

Snowmobile racers line up at the starting line.

Cain's Quest 2024 is officially underway, kicking off in Labrador City under sunny skies.

Competitors of the Labrador snowmobile endurance race will travel more than 3,000 kilometres over the next week, covering much of the Big Land and parts of Quebec.

The race was also going to cover the south coast of Labrador, but the route was changed on Saturday to avoid poor racing conditions.

Andrew Milley of Wabush, who has won the race twice, said preparations have been hectic in the days leading up to the race. Now, he said, he's just ready to get out there.

"I'm happy that we are finally here and we just get to ride snowmobile," Milley told CBC News before reaching the starting line. "It has been absolute chaos with route changes and stuff…Now we just get to do the good part and just ride snowmobile."

The new route will send racers on a 650 km loop of Labrador West and into Schefferville, Que. on the opening day before returning to rest in Labrador City. As the race continues, Milley said, racers will leave Churchill Falls on the final leg and return to Schefferville before ending in Labrador City.

  • Cain's Quest rerouted day before race, avoiding poor conditions in southern Labrador
  • Cain's Quest snowmobilers are ready to go — and are hoping the weather is too

The change has led Milley's partner, three-time champion Rob Gardner, left unsure of what to expect heading into the race.

"I don't have any expectations other than that I want to finish," said Gardner, who travels to Labrador from Maine for the race. "I think Cain's Quest is committed to finish. I think we have to finish no matter what."

The race begins! Cain's Quest kicks off in Labrador

Racing in remembrance.

Other teams in the race, like Team 72, are racing in remembrance.

The team, named Mark's Legacy, is racing in honour of Mark d'Eon. d'Eon died in 2021 after battling cancer, and 72 marks the year of his birth.

"He wanted to do this race, and he didn't get to do it. So we're doing it for him," said Shirley Mood, d'Eon's mother in law, at the starting line. "I think it's an honour and everybody is thrilled."

Three women bundled up in winter gear stand on a frozen lake. They hold signs that read ' Go Team 72 in honour of Mark Deon.'

d'Eon's father in law, Almond Mood of Woods Harbour, N.S., said he and his partner are making sure that Mark gets to be part of the race — and knows he'll be watching over them.

"We have his ashes in our pockets...and his memories in our head," Mood said.

Max Penashue, racing in his third Cain's Quest, is also racing with his daughter close to his heart. She died of a drug overdose involving fentanyl, he said, and wants to highlight the need for leadership through decals on his snowmobile.

comedian Dom Joly

Comedian Dom Joly on his quest to find the end of the earth in Atlantic Canada

Canada’s remote Fogo Island feels like the end of the world. And for some people, it is.

We’ve all been on some extreme trips. But how many of us can claim to have travelled to the very edge of the world? I can… sort of. Allow me to explain.

I made several trips for my latest book The Conspiracy Tourist, but the strangest was undoubtedly to the island of Fogo, off Canada’s Newfoundland coast. I was looking into flat Earth theory: the idea that the Earth is a flat, round disk, surrounded by an ice wall. When I dived deeper, I discovered a splinter group of people who not only believe that the Earth is flat, but that it’s square. Logically, in their eyes, this means that there are four corners: Hydra in Greece, Papua New Guinea, the Bermuda Triangle and Fogo Island.

So, this was why I found myself on a road trip from St John’s, the capital of Newfoundland, to Fogo. I was accompanied by John, a square-flat-earther with a love of the band Rush, which made the trip feel longer than it actually was.

To get to Fogo Island from St John’s involves driving through Gander, where you really must call into the airport. Back in the 1950s, Gander Airport was a big deal as the place transatlantic flights stopped to refuel. Locals hung out at the airport every night hoping to spot The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe or Frank Sinatra sitting at the bar waiting to travel on.

Once technology made the stopovers redundant, this beautiful passenger terminal became frozen in time, like a Mad Men set. Even now, Eames chairs sit expectantly in the ladies’ powder room patiently awaiting the return of famous bottoms.

Moving on, we took the ferry to Fogo from the wonderfully named Farewell Harbour. After an hour and half, we arrived at our final destination. Fogo is tiny, with a population of just over 2,000 people. Think the Falkland Islands but inhabited by fishermen with accents that are a curious mix of Irish and West Country, a haunting link to their ancestors, who first landed here in the 17th century in search of fishy treasure. Almost every weather-beaten house has a slightly off-kilter hut suspended just above the water on thin wooden stilts. Back in the day, these would have been used to dry the fish, but the fishing industry was shut down in 1992 when cod stocks ran out.

The local economy was saved by a lady called Zita Cobb, an islander who made a lot of money in Toronto during the tech boom. She decided to return to Fogo to set up a charity called Shorefast, which aimed to both revive culture on the island and reinvent the economy. To do this, she built a quite extraordinary hotel, Fogo Island Inn, designed by Canadian architect Todd Saunders. It sits like a vast beached ocean liner on stilts and is one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever visited. The hotel employs lots of locals and uses a wide array of local products, and rooms don’t come cheap: from $1,975 (£1,167) a night.

But I wasn’t on Fogo for its luxury tourism. I was on a serious expedition to discover the edge of the Earth. So, after a brief visit to the Flat Earth Museum, one of the world’s least impressive scientific institutions, we drove to the far end of the island, to Fogo village itself. Looming ominously above the wooden houses in the grey bay below it was Brimstone Head, a giant lump of weathered granite. Once we’d climbed this, we could supposedly gaze over the edge of the Earth and glimpse the ice wall.

Half an hour later, after a bracing but not arduous climb, we hit the summit. We gazed out expectantly… at the sea, which stretched to the horizon. No sign of the edge.

John was more than disappointed. He decided we needed a boat to explore further. So we found one. With a storm brewing, the captain told us we had an hour before things became unsafe. These, after all, are the treacherous waters that sank the Titanic. We headed out and found nothing but endless sea.

John became angry. He accused both the captain and myself of being in league with Bill Gates and claimed that we were simply going around in circles to confuse him. My life flashed before me. I had visions of my epitaph should this go pear-shaped: ‘Comedian drowned by enraged flat-earther yards from the edge of the world’. What with me being something of a professional prankster, people probably wouldn’t even believe it.

It’s not easy being an intrepid explorer. But it does allow you to meet people of all persuasions, and make your own conclusions about the weird and wonderful world we all live in. A place that, for now at least, we can all still travel around… or across.

Absence of a Sign Walkthrough

This FF7 Rebirth Absence of a Sign Quest guide includes everything you need to help a planetologist get rid of strange creatures of ill omen and get a better look at the stars. Both Fire and Ice Materia are strongly recommended for this mission.

Speak to Caesar in the Seminar Room

Absence of a Sign 1.png

This quest is available after you complete the story portion of Chapter 10. Once you do so, you can hoof it or fast travel to the Planetology Assembly and make your way to the assembly room itself and speak to a man standing in the back.

This is Caesar, and he has a weird favor to ask. He wants you to take pictures of the stars following the defeat of these giant emperor scorpion…things…that have started to appear in the Canyon. The stars only show up after the “ill omens” are defeated and they’re in three locations.

You get handed notes that you can examine, but the three locations themselves are given locations on the map. The notes are so you can replicate the photos themselves, which need to be done with 80% accuracy to get the best result for each one.

How To Find and Fight Reapertails (Photographing Celestial Phenomena)

Absence of a Sign 4.png

While you’re made aware of the locations, getting to all of them can prove a bit tricky. The simplest one is the one nearest the airstrip you entered the region on. Just north of Salt Miners’ Shack there’s a branch to another path you can follow to take you up to the plateau that has the Reapertail.

The one located nearest the Phenom Intel, in the old ruins, has a ramp up the side that will lead you to the Reapertail up here. There are a couple of smaller fiends here as well.

The last Reapertail is near Remwave Tower 6 at the ancient capital. Go as far northeast as you can, then get on a chocobo and take the turbine up to an even higher pillar where you’ll find the beast waiting.

Absence of a Sign 6.png

The key to fighting these gigantic arachnids is using Ice magic and then getting the hell out of their way. Anything you can do to buff defenses, do it, because these things love shredding through your HP, especially with their move Pulverize . This will send them on a mad charge and land numerous strikes with their claws, tail, and legs and unless you’ve got defense buffs, it can trap and kill you without warning.

Hitting them with Ice magic attacks repeatedly will pressure them. Follow it up with Fire attribute attacks and it makes them crack and stagger, opening them up for the big damage you need. Stay buffed and behind them if you can, as they have difficulty hitting you back there and can’t Pulverize you at all if you aren’t in front of them.

Absence of a Sign 8.png

Once you defeat the ill omens, you have to take a picture of the phenomena happening in the skies. You’ll likely have to back up several steps, as your goal is to get at least 80% accuracy in the resemblance to the photos the planetologists gave you.

Thankfully, your camera will tell you the percentage of how close it is, whether you have a good look at their notes or not, similar to the scavenger hunt in Costa Del Sol.

Travel is so expensive post-pandemic. But I don’t want to give up the idea of an annual vacation. How can I keep costs down? —Tripping Out Over Expenses

Experts predict that this year will be the busiest ever for travel since before the pandemic. And for many, it’s already feeling like it might be the priciest. According to NerdWallet’s February 2024 travel inflation report , the cost of hotels, entertainment, and dining out are rising, with overall travel expenses for the past 12 months up 3.1 percent through January 2024 compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Hotels will be a big vacation investment. Lodging rates increased 5.2 percent between December 2023 and January 2024 alone. And traveler beware: the average daily hotel rate is projected to grow nearly 5 percent more in the next year, according to hotel-commerce platform SiteMinder . There’s been little respite from room rates hovering near all-time highs at properties across the U.S. this winter, and staff shortages will likely mean continued high prices but fewer services. You’re getting gauged even more for dining out: in January, prices for restaurant meals were 25.6 percent higher than the same month four years ago.

The coast of Baja Sur, Mexico, near Cabos San Lucas, is famous for its numerous resort properties, like this oceanfront one.

There is some good news: airfare—on domestic routes in particular—is predicted to drop 16 percent this year, according to Kayak. The travel-research engine estimates it will cost $461 on average to fly in the U.S. I recently booked a round-trip, direct flight from Denver to Newark, New Jersey, in April on United for a very reasonable $227. That’s about half of what I was paying for the same flight in April 2018.

That said, the overseas flights I’ve booked for spring and summer travel have given me serious sticker shock. International airfare departing from the U.S. is up 10 percent compared with 2023, according to Kayak . In the past, I’ve scored direct flights from Denver to Los Cabos, Mexico , for under $400; a flight for late March this year was $1,200. Similarly, a late-May flight from Denver to Majorca, Spain, was priced at over $3,000, when in the past I’ve seen it for as low as $600.

Some experts are optimistic that additional flights and routes , especially those from upstart low-cost carriers like Breeze Airways and Norse Atlantic Airways, will help lower international fares, but I’ll believe it when I see it. For now your best strategy is to book overseas fares early. According to Kayak, eight months is the sweet spot and can save you between 8 and 18 percent.

If you’re on a budget but still want to go big in some fashion, don’t despair; you can still have an affordable annual vacation if you’re willing to be flexible on timing, strategic about choosing a destination, and plan ahead. Here are some of my tricks, plus tips from industry experts on how to make that happen.

1. Travel in the Shoulder Season

A waterfall surrounded by lush green trees and plants is a hiker's dream in Costa Rica.

Shoulder seasons are periods when destinations see fewer tourists but aren’t closed for the off-season. The perks are fewer crowds and often great deals on hotels and flights, but on the flip side, shops and restaurants may be shuttered or have limited hours. Weather can also be a gamble. In Mexico , for example, September and October are the slowest months of the year for tourism; they’re also the wettest, and the time tropical storms are most likely to hit both coasts, says Zach Rabinor, founder of Journey Mexico.

Don’t dismiss destinations during a rainy season, though. In Costa Rica , you can save 30 to 40 percent between August and November and enjoy deserted beaches and lush rainforests, says Javier Echecopar, cofounder of Journey Costa Rica. “Those months are considered rainy, but usually with clear mornings followed by afternoon showers,” he says, adding that on the Caribbean side of the country, the coast tends to be very clear during those months, a result of microclimates.

If you’re seeking value above all else, you may need to skip bucket-list destinations this year, even during the slow seasons. I booked a trip to Rome in March, and while streets and major attractions were quieter, prices weren’t cheaper for my flight, hotels, or restaurant meals.

Jenna Swan, a travel agent with Embark Beyond, says you’ll find more value visiting less iconic cities during shoulder season. “A room in Paris could easily cost two or three times the amount of a room in Madrid,” she told me.

2. Pay Attention to the Extra Costs of Travel

I used to be quick to jump on a cheap airfare or hotel rate without considering the bigger picture. When choosing between a 6 A.M. flight priced at $450 versus a 10 A.M. priced at $500, I’d book the seemingly more affordable option. What I didn’t factor in was that getting to the airport would tack on extra fees: the $10 bus route I typically take doesn’t run that early, which meant I’d have to pay upward of $100 for an Uber, or drive and fork over as much as $50 a day for airport parking.

Additionally, major airlines are piling on more fees, for everything from checked bags to select seats, and airline websites often use design strategies known as dark patterns used to push consumers to buy extras (like a rental car or trip insurance) during their purchase.

3. Book an All-Inclusive Vacation

A family of four on a catamaran cruises away from the Caribbean shoreline of Mexico and into deeper turquoise waters.

Once associated with budget travelers and bottomless drinks, the all-inclusive-resort model has gone upscale, with properties that feature Michelin-star restaurants, fine wines, and privately guided activities. The initial price tag can seem spendy, but when you factor in everything, you get incredible value.

And all-inclusive stays aren’t just for beach holidays. Package-vacation pioneer Club Med now offers properties in Quebec and the Alps. A family of four booking Club Med’s five-night ski getaway in Charlevoix, Canada, can save upward of $7,000 compared to a plan-it-yourself ski vacation in Aspen, Colorado—even after factoring in airfare.

4. Use a Travel Agent

As a seasoned traveler, I used to think a travel agent would be of no use for me. I now view these professionals as travel wizards. They have industry connections that translate to free room upgrades and special perks, like resort credits, complimentary breakfast, and occasionally other amenities such as a bottle of wine waiting in the room, free airport transfers, and VIP access to museums and adventure sites. If anything goes wrong, they’re on call to help. And they know how to score great deals. When I reached out to a travel agent about the exorbitant Majorca flight, he was able to bring the cost down to $1,753—almost half of what I was looking at spending—by mixing airlines and connections.

5. Check the Exchange Rate—and Head to Where It’s Most Beneficial

Last summer I traveled to Croatia, not realizing the country had embraced the euro. When I visited in 2020, the dollar’s strength against the kuna made Croatia feel like an economic destination. But now it’s just as pricey as vacationing in France or Italy.

A good exchange rate gives you extra buying power to maximize your travel experience (think: more activities and spectacular meals). In Canada, given the strength of the U.S. dollar, everything is essentially 30 percent off for Americans; in Australia, around 35 percent. Asian countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, and South America nations like Colombia and Argentina, are also excellent places to stretch your dollar.

6. Let New Flight Routes Dictate Your Destination

An exterior shot of the new international airport in Tulum, Mexico, which opened in December 1, 2023.

Low-cost carriers offer some of their lowest prices when launching new routes. Frontier, for example, has promoted fares as low as $19 in the days following the announcement of new routes. And even after promotional fares disappear, having a new airline on a route adds competition that tends to nudge prices down. Many major airlines are also launching new routes this year. American, for example, will begin flying to the new airport in Tulum, Mexico, this month. Follow travel sites like Skift and the Points Guy, which keep up with this information.

7. Reconsider Hostels. Many Are New and Hip.

Yes, the grungy backpacker hotels of your post-college days still exist, but there’s also a crop of clean, budget-friendly hostel chains attracting crowds. Check out A&O , Freehand (which describes itself as “a collection of hotels that combine the social culture of a hostel”), and Generator . According to Oliver Winter, founder of A&O, the largest hostel brand in Europe, nearly 28 percent of guests are between the ages of 25 and 34. Boutique hostels often offer private rooms with an en suite bathroom, bunk rooms to accommodate families or groups of friends, and a place to make meals so you’re not forced to fritter away your budget dining out. I’ve stayed in a four-bed bungalow bunk room at the Freehand Miami with friends, and it felt as stylish and immaculate as a boutique hotel, plus, the bar, Broken Shaker, makes some of the best drinks in the city.

8. Save on Meals (but Still Eat Your Heart Out)

A hand holds up a panino filled with prosciutto and arugula. Behind it is Florence, Italy, and the Arno River.

I always try to book a hotel room that includes breakfast in the rate. My strategy: eat a hearty, late breakfast and then pocket a muffin and a banana for a snack later on that can tide me over until an early dinner.

Taking advantage of local street-food scenes can also save you heaps. A&O’s Winter says that Florence, Italy, is a little-known street-food city (though not full of food trucks, as Americans might imagine, but shops that sell various hot and cold sandwiches and beverages you can enjoy on the street). He likes Da’ Vinattieri , close to the National Museum of Bargello.

The author wearing ski gear and a helmet atop a stunning alpine-scape in Hinterglemm, Austria.

For the past 15 years, Outside travel-advice columnist  Jen Murphy has gone on a weeklong European ski vacation with friends that typically costs less than a long weekend of skiing in the U.S. She is a huge fan of off-season and shoulder-season travel and thinks the term “rainy season” should be changed to “green season.”
