The largest national park in Utah, with diversity that staggers the imagination.

Introduction

Canyonlands, Utah’s largest national park, offers an astonishing array of natural wonders. For an easy and rewarding experience, head to the Island in the Sky District, a mere 32 miles (51.5 km) from Moab. Along the paved scenic drive you’ll find numerous pullouts that grant magnificent views of the park and surrounding public lands. Adventurers can also venture into the backcountry using hiking trails and four-wheel-drive roads for day trips or overnight stays.

Perched atop a towering 1500-foot mesa, the Island in the Sky truly lives up to its name. With 20 miles (32.2 km) of paved roads, this district unlocks some of the most breathtaking vistas in Canyon Country. From these elevated viewpoints, visitors can often see over 100 miles (161 km) in any direction, revealing panoramic scenes that stretch across thousands of square miles of canyon country. Take a brief day-hike or unwind during a serene late afternoon while basking in the beauty of a sunset. Whether you have a few hours or a few days to spare, the Island in the Sky guarantees an unforgettable experience for the whole family, immersing you in the wonders of Canyon Country.

Canyonlands is famous for its mountain biking terrain, particularly for the 100-mile White Rim Road at the Island in the Sky. The Maze also offers some multi-day trip possibilities, though the logistics and roads are more difficult (for the support vehicles, not the bikes).

The Colorado and Green rivers wind through the heart of Canyonlands, cutting through layered sandstone to form two deep canyons. Both rivers are calm upstream of the Confluence, ideal for canoes, kayaks and other shallow water craft. Below the Confluence, the combined flow of both rivers spills down Cataract Canyon with remarkable speed and power, creating a world-class stretch of white water.

Biological Soil Crust

canyonlands tours moab ut

Your help is crucial in preserving our trails and protecting the fragile soil that sustains the desert ecosystem. The biological soil crust, also known as cryptobiotic soil, serves as the foundation for desert plant life. This unique black, knobby crust is composed of diverse living organisms and plays a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of the desert environment.

However, this soil crust is exceptionally delicate and can take several decades to regenerate. Even a single footstep can cause irreparable damage that can persist for years, impacting the entire ecosystem. We urge you to stay on designated roads, routes, and trails to ensure the preservation of this fragile life. In areas where hiking trails are not established, it is advisable to hike on sandy washes or bare rock surfaces to minimize the impact on the soil.

By remaining vigilant and adhering to these guidelines, you contribute to the long-term sustainability of the desert ecosystem and help safeguard its natural beauty for generations to come. Let’s work together to keep all of our trails open and protect the invaluable biological soil crust.

The Island in the Sky offers a wide variety of hiking trails ranging from short 30 minute walks on the mesa top, to overnight expeditions all the way down to the Colorado River.

Trails are marked with cairns (small rock piles). Please do not disturb existing cairns or build new ones. Signs are located at trailheads and intersections. All trails leading below the Mesa Top are primitive and rough; carry and know how to use a topographic map. No potable water is available along any of the hiking trails. During the warmest months always carry at least one gallon of water per person, per day.

With hundreds of miles of four-wheel-drive roads, Canyonlands offers ideal terrain for multi-night mountain bike trips. Most groups travel with vehicle support to haul water and gear since there are few reliable water sources along these roads. For the truly adventurous, self-supported trips with panniers and trailers are also possible. Bikes must remain on designated roads: there are no single-track trails in the park.

Things to Know

  • Overnight Trips: You must have a permit for all overnight trips.
  • Day Trips: You must have a permit for day trips on White Rim, Elephant Hill, Lavender Canyon, and Peekaboo/Horse Canyon roads. Groups must camp in designated sites.
  • Reservations for White Rim campsites are very competitive . You may have to make a reservation up to four months in advance.
  • There are no shoulders or bike lanes. Be aware of passing vehicles.

Where Can I Ride My Bike?

You can ride a bicycle on any public roadway in the park. Some roads are better for cycling than others. Check at visitor centers for recommendations and road conditions.

Paved Roads

You can ride on paved roads at the Island in the Sky. You must must ride single file. There are no road shoulders or bike lanes; please be aware of passing vehicles.

Backcountry Roads

Canyonlands is famous for its mountain biking terrain, particularly for the 100-mile White Rim Road at Island in the Sky. The 100-mile White Rim Road loops around and below the Island in the Sky mesa top and provides expansive views of the surrounding area. Bicycle trips usually take three to four days. Overnight and day-use permits are required.

Do I Need a Permit?

  • Day Use: If you’re taking a day trip on the White Rim, Elephant Hill, Lavender Canyon, or Peekaboo/Horse Canyon roads, you need a day-use permit.
  • Overnight: If you’re going on an overnight trip, you need an overnight permit.

During the spring and fall, demand for permits frequently exceeds the number available. If you plan to visit Canyonlands during peak season, especially to bike and camp along the White Rim Road, we recommend making reservations well in advance. You can reserve overnight permits up to four months in advance of the start of your trip. Day-use permits are available up to 24 hours in advance of your trip.

Mountain bike groups must travel single-file, remain on established roads, and camp in designated sites. There is no single-track riding in the park. We recommend a support vehicle for all multi-day bike trips: there are no water sources along most of the roads. Guided trips are available for many destinations within Canyonlands.

Electronic Bicycles (e-bikes)

On August 30, 2019 the National Park Service announced a new electric bicycle (e-bike) policy for national parks, expanding recreational opportunities and accessibility. The policy supports Secretary’s Order 3376, signed by U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt on August 29, 2019, that directs Department of the Interior (DOI) bureaus to create a clear and consistent e-bike policy on all federal lands managed by the Department.

Beginning October 1, 2019, visitors to Southeast Utah Group parks (Arches and Canyonlands national parks and Hovenweep and Natural Bridges national monuments) will be allowed to use e-bikes where traditional bicycles are allowed. Bicycles and e-bikes are allowed on paved and unpaved roads that are open to the public. Bicycles and e-bikes are not allowed on any trails in the parks.

There are no charging stations in the parks. Generators are not allowed in the backcountry. This change in e-bike policy applies to private and commercial use in the parks.

The National Park Service announcement and the agency’s new e-bike policy are available online at www.nps.gov/orgs/1207/ebikepolicy.htm .

Canyonlands is a paradise for photographers. Under conditions of constantly changing light, the varicolored landscape provides limitless photographic opportunities. Often, the difference between an average photograph and an exceptional photograph is good lighting. Low sun angles at sunrise and sunset can add brilliant color to the rock. Scattered clouds can also add depth to an image and a passing storm can provide extremely dramatic lighting.

Canyonlands Natural History Association

Canyonlands Natural History Association (CNHA) is a nonprofit organization assisting the National Park Service in its educational, interpretive and scientific programs throughout southeast Utah. Known as a "cooperating association," CNHA’s goals include enhancing visitors’ understanding and appreciation of public lands by providing a selection of quality, educational materials for sale in many vistor centers. Twenty percent of these sales is returned to the National Park Service and other federal land management agencies.

CNHA operates the bookstore at Arches Visitor Center.

Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks

The Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks : Bates Wilson Legacy Fund provides direct support to Arches and Canyonlands national parks and Natural Bridges and Hovenweep national monuments in order to enhance existing projects in these spectacular areas, and to conserve the land and its cultural treasures for present and future generations to enjoy.

This mission honors the legendary work of Superintendent Bates Wilson, who came to Arches in 1949, inspiring and leading the effort that resulted in the establishment of Canyonlands National Park in 1964. The Friends Group offices are in the Rock House behind Arches Visitor Center, where Bates once lived with his family.

Canyonlands Scenic Flight Airplane Tours

This spectacular Redtail Air Adventures flight will first carry you above the fantastic scenery of the northern district of Canyonlands National Park , Island in the Sky. Majestic 1000-foot high cliffs rise above the Colorado and Green Rivers, which border it on either side. Serpentine drainage systems are carved into the terrain below the cliffs. Upheaval Dome can be seen at its northern end; the Confluence of the the two rivers form the district’s southernmost point. Then on to the Needles District, the most fanciful and colorful portion of Canyonlands. Pink and white bands can be seen in its many spires and cliffs, and it is the home of some of the most remote and famous arches of canyon country. Difficult to reach by hiking and extremely beautiful, Angel Arch and Druid Arches are the best known. Elephant Arch, Kirk Arch, Wedding Ring Arch and Castle Arch, hidden away in the back country, are also included. Photographic opportunities abound!

Canyonlands National Park remains largely untouched by man-made access routes. What would require days on foot or even 4x4 vehicle to explore, you can visit all four districts in about an hour's time. Appreciating the splendor and grandeur of a place is as much about getting a good top level understanding of it by air as well as dwelling amidst their walls for a time.

The "Air Guide" pilots at Redtail will give you more than a round trip shuttle, they will make you laugh, inspire you with stories, and point out the very best views the landscape can offer - and that's a lot! You'll have made a new friend, and when you come back to Moab again someday, they will be waiting by their plane to show you something new.

Window seats are inevitable in these smaller planes, and that is not only good, it is spectacular! Can you imagine a landscape better suited to getting a bird's eye view? And what a view it is!

This Inn-based  Utah hiking tour  begins with a pickup in Moab and a drive through Arches National Park out to Devil’s Garden trailhead, giving us our first glimpses of the fantastical formations of Entrada sandstone that Arches is famous for. We embark on the Devil’s Garden loop observing giant fins of rock and several arches, including the largest arch on Earth. Short traverses up slickrock accentuate this scenic hike. After our hike, we will check in to our accommodations and settle in for the evening’s first dinner.

Our second stop is another viewpoint, the sweeping vistas at Island in the Sky. These vantage points provide the surreal experience of looking down on the remote and wild landscapes that characterize this part of the world. No doubt we will be a return clients

What a great week. We did the Utah inn based trip. Moab area is beautiful. We are usually plan it yourself travelers/hikers but decided to try something new for the sake of convenience. The accommodations, meals and fellow travelers on the trip were all great. Dakota our guide was full of information from a naturalist and historical perspective. Favorite day was the needles district in canyonlands. No doubt we will be a return clients - looking at backpacking or camping next trip.

Amazing & momentous trip

Amazing & momentous trip - diverse hiking trails of varying sceneries, helpful and insightful guide Dakota who cooks tasty hot meals, 1 particularly impressive 4.5 stars restaurant, luxurious accomodation (had the best morning jog with nature) and adore the safe town. Worth my 26 hours travelling time from Singapore!

Very Enjoyable

This was a great experience. Not only did the 5 days of hiking give us spectacular views, our guide, Dakota, provided a lot of good information about the geology, flora and fauna, Native American practices and other history. The lodging was first rate and so was the food. It was a very well organized and enjoyable inn-based experience.

The Complete Canyonlands Trip

5 Days   •   454 Miles

A distant corner of Utah worthy of an extended, careful exploration.

Exploring the Canyonlands Region The Canyonlands Region of Utah combines the best of the  Moab  area's easy proximity to  Arches National Park  and  Canyonlands National Park 's most accessible district with some of the United State's most remote and culturally significant landscapes.

While this itinerary will get you started on where to go, this is a region that blossoms with high-contrast desert beauty and powerful prehistory. Take your time to learn about this destination, hire local guides and pause whenever you can to appreciate the forces of nature that created this place.

Canyonlands is made up of three land districts (and the rivers that carved it), and this itinerary explores a couple of them as part of an expansive and awe-inspiring journey through the region.

Get up early and you can catch the first few rays of sunlight streaming through Mesa Arch and the dramatic view it frames of Canyonlands National Park from atop the mesa of the Island in the Sky district. Another short hike will take you to a 1,000-foot high vantage point above the Needles District and wide-open canyonlands. Or drive to  Dead Horse Point State Park , an even higher vantage point above the Colorado River, as it curves steeply around the canyon wall.   First-time visitors should plan extra days for Arches National Park and an expanded Moab adventure. Otherwise, start the drive south on U.S. 191 toward a rugged and adventure-rich region with diverse voices as distinctive as the landscape. Criss-cross the land along the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway with stops in the Indian Creek and Shash Jaa units of  Bears Ears National Monument , the Needles district of Canyonlands,  Hovenweep National Monument  and the gateway communities of  Monticello ,  Blanding  and  Bluff .

Wrap up the region with a guided exploration of  Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park  and a trip to  Natural Bridges National Monument . It's worth noting that the long, scenic roads back north tempt with detours to more of Utah's most beloved landscapes. In other words, it's worth taking the plus sign of this itinerary seriously.

Read these  resources  to learn how to travel thoughtfully and experience Utah most fully.

  • Start:  From Salt Lake City, drive roughly three and a half hours southeast to Moab
  • Finish:  From the Natural Bridges National Monument, head back to Salt Lake City
  • Hours of driving:  16+ hours, including travel between the region and Salt Lake City

Dead Horse Point to Canyonlands

  • Filmed in Utah: Dead Horse Point
  • Grand View Point

Utah is an outdoor adventure mecca known for pushing people's limits. Today, however, acclimate to the high desert country on short trails to breathtaking views. Many get a very early start to capture one of the most-photographed sunrises around: Mesa Arch. Campers may try to get a site at Dead Horse Point State Park or Canyonlands National Park for quickest access to the sunrise spectacle. Of course, the sunrise over Utah’s Canyon Country is spectacular no matter where you are, and it’s also an ideal hour for photographing this amazing landscape throughout the park. Pick up additional photos and memories at Grand View Point, one of Canyonlands’ best overlooks. If you have come to get the heart rate up, Dead Horse Point offers more than 16 miles of singletrack with access to views that rival the Grand Canyon.

Where to Stay In or near Moab,  especially if you've planned time for Arches National Park (Read: " The Best Time to Visit Moab ").

Indian Creek to the Needles

  • Needles Overlook
  • Indian Creek Corridor Scenic Byway
  • Cave Spring Hike

Traveling south from the Moab area, start with the side trip to the Needles Overlook for a bird's-eye view of the rugged and expansive southeastern district of Canyonlands National Park . The trip is about a 22-mile drive on C.R. 133 from U.S. 191, between Moab and Monticello. Give yourself time to walk the full length of the expansive overlook.

Continue the day with an exploratory drive through the Indian Creek unit of Bears Ears National Monument , on the Indian Creek Corridor Scenic Byway, including a stop at Newspaper Rock State Historic Site. Though ideally an overnight camping destination with extended hikes, the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park  at the end of the byway has a couple of easier hikes to introduce you to the rugged red rock terrain.

Where to Stay Camp in Needles Outpost or within Canyonlands or head to  Monticello , Blanding or Bluff for lodging.

Shash Jaa of Bears Ears and Pioneer History

  • Edge of the Cedars
  • Mule Canyon's House on Fire and Cave Tower
  • Bluff Fort Historic Site

Your best introduction to Bears Ears might just be a stop at Edge of the Cedars State Park Museum, whose collection highlights artifacts and lifestyle of Ancestral Puebloan culture. Introductory hikes to the Shash Jaa unit of Bears Ears include House on Fire and Cave Towers, but an even more accessible and well-interpreted trail is the Butler Wash Ruins Overlook.

The eclectic town of Bluff offers great local dining, lodging and the Bears Ears Education Center . The education center offers tips for visiting with respect and detailed information for safely visiting the monument, the United State's first monument created at the request of Native Americans. Visit Bluff Fort Historic Site to fill in the details of this area's pioneer past.

Where to Stay Maintain your overnight base camp in  Blanding or Bluff for lodging, or opt for the IDA-certified International Dark Sky Park Hovenweep National Monument for camping, stargazing and early start to tomorrow’s adventure.

Tips for Prepared Travel The area is open to visitors, but please review our  travel advisory page  for respect and protect practices.

Ancestral Lives and Contemporary Art

  • Hovenweep National Monument
  • River House
  • Valley of the Gods

If you camped overnight in Hovenweep National Monument and the skies were clear, you’ll proceed starstruck to the well-interpreted trails of the monument to peer into the lives of an ancient culture who built astonishing multistoried towers on the edge of a canyon more than 700 years ago. Meanwhile, Bluff is a small town with a big personality and serves great local food and coffee while the nearby Twin Rocks Trading Post honors local Navajo artists with fairly priced, museum-caliber baskets and art. (Read: The Navajo Basketmakers .) The tour continues near the south end of Shash Jaa, with an easy stop at Sand Island petroglyphs and a more challenging visit to the River House Ruin, which showcases a confluence of ancient culture with Mormon pioneer culture.

Given enough daylight, plan the 17-mile tour along the gravel road through the geographically fascinating Valley of the Gods. With high clearance, you can also self-guide a portion of  Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park , but the best tours are with a local guide. Half-day and full-day tours are available, as are nearby accommodations.

Where to Stay Rest your feet after a long day at Goulding's Lodge , located just outside the park's borders.

Tips for Prepared Travelers -  The Petroglyphs of Comb Ridge and Sand Island Petroglyph Site

Monument Valley and Natural Bridges

  • Monument Valley Jeep Tour
  • Goosenecks State Park
  • Natural Bridges National Monument

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park awaits. Book a Jeep tour in advance to get the best access to the park. There are tours of varying lengths depending on how much time you want to spend exploring the Navajo art, artifacts, Western memorabilia and Navajo tacos of Goulding’s Lodge. Unless you're pulling a trailer or driving an RV, take the winding, unpaved switchbacks of the Moki Dugway up S.R. 261 towards Natural Bridges National Monumen t . Along the way, make the side trip to Goosenecks State Park , an excellent overlook of the San Juan River (that can also be picked up the day before with Valley of the Gods).

While the monument can be enjoyed from a scenic drive with overlooks, adventurous visitors can hike down to one or all three natural bridges, with an option to connect them all via an extended backcountry hike, time, preparedness and stamina permitting. This close to Bears Ears National Monument , Lake Powell  and the Capitol Reef region, there's plenty more to see in this corner of Utah, otherwise enjoy the scenic Bicentennial Highway Scenic Byway (S.R. 95) back to I-70 and the road home.

Canyonlands By Night has adopted the Leave No Trace ethic to keep these areas wild and scenic for future visitors. Basically, it means to leave everything as it was when you found it. We offer the following link so you may do otherwise:  Leave No Trace .

No pets are allowed in the Park.

Please see below for details on all rental equipment we have available.

We do charge an additional boat fee to transport your own canoe, raft or kayak ; However, we do not charge if you rent canoes from us. We also rent other canoe related gear.

Helpful Hint:  A large car wash sponge helps keep your vessel clean during the trip.

Toilet Systems

Your toilet system should be designed to empty into a sewer system in the same way that recreational vehicles discard refuse. Pack your toilet so it is readily available for day use as well as campsite use. Soiled feminine hygiene products should be stored in a zip-lock bag and carried out in your garbage.

We have toilet systems available for rent if you do not have one. Our toilets are custom made for durability, ease of use and comfort. A real toilet seat attaches for camp use! The seat is removed and a separate lid seals the container for transportation. We clean the toilet after your trip. Toilet paper is not included in our rental (please note that when using our toilet we require toilet paper to be kept in a separate bag like a zip lock and not placed in the toilet.  Remember to bring zip locks!)

Helpful Hint: Throwing Wag Bags into regular trash disposal is against the law and bio-hazard. Grand County has five approved Wag Bag Disposal sites:

  • Canyonlands Solid Waste Authority Transfer Station, 2295 S. Highway 191
  • Southeast Utah Health Department, 575 Kane Creek Blvd.
  • Lions Park, north side of the intersection of Highways 191 and 128
  • Grand County Transit Hub, south side of the intersection of Highways 191 and 128
  • Wastewater Reclamation Facility, 1070 W. 400 North

For updated sites, hours and rules visit Discover Moab’s new Poop in Moab page at discovermoab.com/poop

A fire pan is required in Canyonlands National Park and the surrounding BLM lands regardless of whether or not you plan on having a fire while camping on the river. Fire pans must be at least 12″ in diameter with a 2″ lip. Bring your own wood or collect driftwood or down and dead tamarisk. The ash of a fire is deposed of with your trash. We have fire pans available for rent.

Helpful Hint:  Sprinkle a couple of cups of water in your fire pan to cool ashes in the evening and put everything in with your trash the morning before you depart your beach.

Chose to meet at our office at 8:00am MT or 2:00pm MT for orientation then to start loading your gear. Loading should be complete within one hour from the time of your arrival. The drive to any of the Green River boat ramps will take approximately an hour to an hour and a half. The drive to either of the Colorado River boat ramps takes about 30 minutes.

On the last day of your trip, you will be picked up by a Canyonlands By Night jet boat shuttle boat between the Confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers and Spanish Bottom at 11:00am MT. Your vessels and equipment will be loaded onto the jet boat and you can enjoy a leisure ride upstream in comfortable style. The jet boat, still with gear inside, is brought all the way back to the Canyonlands By Night office in Moab, Utah. Plan on arriving back to Moab around 1:00pm MT (Don’t make travel plans for the same day in case of any emergencies or problems with weather or boats).

Mileage Schedule

Use the mileage schedule below to plan your self-designed Green River or Colorado River canoe, kayak, or raft trip. 15 to 20 miles per day is the average distance made in a canoe in about 6 hours of leisure paddling. Water levels and weather can have an effect on the actual distance made each day. Add enough time for hiking and exploring.

Helpful Hint:  In warmer weather an upstream wind is common. This generally occurs in the afternoon so break camp early and get on your way.
