A tourist board is an important type of travel and tourism organisation that makes up a key part of the structure of the travel and tourism industry . But what is a tourist board, what does this organisation do and why are tourist boards so important? Read on to learn more…

What is a tourist board?

What type of organisation is a tourist board, what does a tourist board do, national tourist boards, regional tourist boards, local tourist boards, what is a tourist board: further reading.

What is a tourist board

A tourist board is a tourist organisation that is founded with a view to promoting and creating the identity, and to enhance the reputation of tourism in a particular location. They are official organisations that encourages tourists to visit a particular city, country, or region.

A tourist board is a not for profit organisation that is usually government owned. This means that the focus is on providing a service to the general public, as opposed to making a direct profit. However, indirectly, tourist boards do help to make money for the country because their aim is to promote the tourism industry, which in turn brings in revenue. Tourist boards are publicly funded, meaning that the money needed to operate comes from money that is raised through taxation. Tourist boards operate within the public sector.

A tourist board is generally a point of information for consumers or tourists. The primary aim is to promote tourism in a particular area. They may do this through a range of marketing initiatives including targeted campaigns and advertisements. Tourist boards may run adverts on TV and place advertisements on bus shelters or on the tube, for example. Tourist boards have also been known to partner with influencers such as bloggers and Instagram influencers who will promote the destination to their followers. Sometimes these can be sizeable campaigns.

Tourist boards will also provide information about a specific area, including transportation options, popular tourist attractions , and types of accommodation available in the area. Tourist boards also provide information about the history and the culture of a specific area.

Behind the scenes, tourist boards also do a lot of work to help manage and facilitate the tourism provision in a particular area. Some of their duties may include:

  • Conducting market research
  • Analysis and appraisal of tourism business in the area
  • Liaising with other Governmental organisations
  • Managing tourist representative and the provision of tourist information
  • Cooperation with tourist boards in other destinations
  • Developing the tourism provision in the area

Different levels of tourists boards

tourism board associations

There are different levels of tourist boards that focus on different levels of tourism, I will explain each of these below.

National tourist boards oversee tourism at a national level, in other words, they are responsible for tourism throughout the country, or the nation. National tourist boards typically set the agenda for tourism and support the sector to improve what is has to offer. National tourist boards provide funding and help to promote a positive image of the country. They will also work closely with other areas of Government at a national level.

Examples of national tourist boards include Visit Britain , Amazing Thailand and Incredible India .

Regional tourist boards are organisations that are in charge of promoting and managing tourism at a regional level. Regional tourist boards will often work closely with national tourist boards. Their main role is to lead the regional tourism strategies in the area. Regional tourist boards will collaborate with local authorities, tourism businesses and other organisations to undertake a range of marketing, product investment and business support activities within the travel and tourism industry.

A local tourist board is a tourist board that focusses on a specific local area. Many local tourist boards will support local tourism groups and associations that help to bring together the private and public sector. Local tourist boards will address issues at grass roots and will demonstrate a higher level of understanding of tourism in a particular area than a national or regional tourist board will. They will work closely will the local authority and local Government.

Local tourist boards will often have responsibility for tourist information centres. These are centres that provide a range of information to tourists on attractions, accommodation, hospitality options etc within the local area. There will often be trained staff who work at the tourist information centres who are able to advise and help tourists. There may also be a small gift shop onsite.

TESTIMONIALS

tourism board associations

It's our first time participating in this exhibition. Visit Malta is thrilled to have connected with quality buyers, travel agents, and media influencers. The event provided an excellent platform to showcase Malta's appeal, resulting in highly productive days that effectively promoted our destination in Qatar.

tourism board associations

In our second participation, we're delighted to return after our initial foray into this market. Having gained familiarity with the Qatari market, we're keen on continuing our promotion of the Dominican Republic Destination. Thanks to the organizers for their meticulous planning. The current days have been productive, marked by professionalism, and we look forward to a similarly successful third Edition as we work towards achieving our goals.

tourism board associations

This marks the second participation of Mowasalat, and we're proud to serve as the transport partner this year. It has been a resounding success with significant footfall and valuable interactions with numerous companies and potential customers. We eagerly anticipate our presence here next year and in the years to come.

tourism board associations

As our first time participating at QTM, we've been impressed by the spectacular organization. As we were seeking a Destination Management Company (DMC) to provide information about our destination in the Middle East, we found what we were looking for. Our focus is on Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. While our primary partners are based in Europe, participating in events in this region, including Qatar, has revealed significant demand for our country. This positive response encourages our commitment, and we look forward to participating in the event again next year.

tourism board associations

This is our first time at QTM. My primary objective was to engage with GCC travel agents, particularly in Doha, Qatar. Additionally, I aimed to reconnect with existing clients. Unlike larger travel shows, one-on-one meetings were challenging due to higher traffic, but I appreciated the quality of buyers at QTM this year. My ultimate goal is to achieve a positive return on investment (ROI), and if accomplished in a timely manner, I am committed to returning to QTM next year.

tourism board associations

QTM serves as an excellent platform for reconnecting and engaging with potential buyers. The organizing company has executed a commendable job in orchestrating this second edition. Looking ahead, I anticipate the third edition to be even better and more expansive in meeting its targets.

tourism board associations

The Development Support Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic is participating for the first time in QTM, and we are pleased with the well-organized event. Everything has been prepared meticulously, and we are content with our experience. Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to return for the next year, building on the success of our current participation. Regarding our targets, we have successfully achieved approximately 30 B2B business meetings. This has been a fruitful engagement for us

tourism board associations

It was our first time visiting Doha, Qatar. RM International, serving as the exclusive Greece and Cyprus agent for QTM exhibition. We extend our gratitude to NeXTfairs for the outstanding organization, which has brought great value to our customers. The experience has been so positive that we are committed to returning next year with a larger stand, representing the real estate sector of our countries. Thank you very much for this opportunity.

tourism board associations

Having participated in the first edition, I've observed significant improvements in the current QTM exhibition. The organizing committee has demonstrated increased efficiency and effectiveness. I am optimistic about achieving my targets. Despite the busy days, I managed to secure a handful of leads. The exhibition has proven to be quite fruitful, and as a Qatar-based company, I am committed to supporting travel events in Qatar. Therefore, I will certainly be participating again next year.

tourism board associations

Our participation in this event has exceeded expectations, thanks to Saudi Tourism's support in enabling numerous Saudi companies, including ours, to join. The strategic decision allowing Gulf residents direct entry into Saudi Arabia opens up a significant market. With direct flights from Doha to various Saudi cities, our focus on essential services aligns well. We anticipate even greater participation next year and express gratitude to Qatari authorities for their support.

tourism board associations

Katara Hospitality, the founding partner of the exhibition, has made this our second year participating. The exhibition has successfully helped us achieve our objectives – securing new contracts and forging new partnerships with companies we hadn't engaged with before. We have also witnessed the participation of many companies and countries from outside Doha, which is a testament to the success of the exhibition and based on this, we look forward to participating in future editions."

tourism board associations

"This year's participation was highly beneficial for us as the number of visitors increased, and there were more participants compared to the previous edition. It was a fruitful experience as it allowed us to showcase our facilities, and services, and connect with partners in the tourism and travel industry. We are strategizing to develop the tourism sector in Qatar in alignment with the country's vision for 2030. As for future participation, we plan to be involved because, ultimately, it is an exhibition that honours Qatar, and we, as participants, take pride in contributing to showcasing the latest updates in the hospitality, tourism, and travel sectors.

tourism board associations

We are honoured to be present in Qatar. The event organization is exceptionally well-organized. What impressed me the most was the professionalism of the hosted buyers, coming from diverse markets, and providing excellent networking opportunities beyond the Qatari market. The sessions alongside the conference were a standout feature. Honestly, we look forward to participating more. This year, we represent a hotel group from Egypt, and next year, we hope to have an even larger representation from Egypt.

tourism board associations

This is our second participation in the exhibition, and what stands out is the continuous improvement from year to year, especially in terms of the increasing number and quality of visitors. The presence of high-quality buyers has become more prominent, with a focus on specific sectors such as hotels and tourism companies. It's notable that private companies are participating, promoting the exhibition even outside Qatar, and conducting their promotional campaigns. We've also observed increased participation from other countries, indicating a growing interest in supporting tourism in Qatar.

SAVRALA Applauds New South African Tourism Leadership, Underscoring the Importance of Board Representation for Sustainable Sector Growth

  • SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER!
  • AAXO ROAR Awards Celebrates Excellence in the Exhibition Industry

Tourism News Africa

The Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (SAVRALA) congratulates the newly appointed South African Tourism Board, chaired by Makhosazana Khanyile, and welcomes the selection of Nombulelo Guliwe as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

“A dynamic and effective South African Tourism is essential for the success of the entire travel and tourism ecosystem,” says Sandile Ntseoane , General Manager of SAVRALA. The appointment of a permanent executive team at SAT will enhance stability in the relationships between SAT and the Tourism sector, which will lead to an acceleration of progress in growing tourism.

“The mobility of tourists is a cornerstone of the visitor experience, and the vehicle rental and leasing sector is an indispensable component. We look forward to partnering with the new SA Tourism leadership to support vital initiatives aimed at increasing tourist length of stay, broadening geographic reach, and boosting tourist spend,” Ntseoane adds.

SAVRALA sees particular alignment with SA Tourism’s mandates around extending visitor stays and promoting travel to lesser-visited regions, recognising that reliable transport links and well-maintained road networks are vital for enticing self-drive tourists and corporate travellers to move around the country with ease.

“For the vehicle rental and leasing industry, initiatives that would help to combat seasonality through targeted campaigns that promote off-peak travel, would also help to create consistent demand for rental vehicles and support stable employment within our sector,” says Ntseoane.

SAVRALA is committed to working closely with the new SA Tourism leadership to build a resilient and sustainable tourism sector, the organisation affirms. “Through active collaboration, we are confident that we can collectively unlock South Africa’s vast tourism potential, bringing benefits to businesses and communities across the country.” SAT’s challenges are South African tourism industry challenges and SAVRALA stands ready as a willing partner, to contribute to and assist with addressing these challenges head-on.

About SAVRALA

The Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (SAVRALA) represents a significant portion of the South African vehicle rental and leasing industry. SAVRALA is committed to upholding industry standards, promoting best practices, and championing the interests of rental and leasing operators in the tourism sector.
