Closed-cell EVA foam is known for its ability to hold a mold. That means after having your liners heat molded, they won’t start to return to a former shape and crowd your feet. The foam is also warmer than some other liner materials and is very dense which helps in high-performance skiing. All Intuition liners are made with specially formulated closed-cell EVA foam, which is why they are often the first choice for pro skiers. The Pro Tour is an Intuition foam liner with flex zones to improve articulation in touring boots.

  • Uniform cell structure traps gasses for the highest quality memory foam.
  • Patented foam without fillers is lighter than traditional sewn or injected liners.
  • Ankle flex zone increases comfort and range of motion when skiing uphill.
  • Integrated lacing system securely wraps your foot to help avoid blisters.
  • Liners can be reheated several times and will still retain their shape.
  • Available with three thickness ratings: low, medium, and high volume*.

* The Low Volume version is much thinner than the Medium Volume and weighs 22g less in size 26. The High Volume is much thicker than the Medium Volume liner and will take up more space making the fit tighter.

* Sizing: For whole-sized touring boots (e.g. 26.0), order the liner in the same size as your boot. For half sizes (e.g. 26.5), round down for most boot models except those using "SCARPA sizing" (where 26.5 is the same shell as 27.0). For SCARPA boots, round up. If you have questions, you can call or email us at [email protected] and we can help find your best liner.

Update 2023/24: The Pro Tour has been replaced by the Tour Tongue, which can be found here .

Gear Review: Intuition Liners

Both Frank and I are firm believers that boots are among the most important part of our backcountry skiing kit. We spend countless hours in our AT boots each season and need them to be both comfortable and lightweight for our ascents as well as stiff enough for dependable performance on steep descents.

My feet don’t typically fit the normal mold of a stock liner, especially for a boot that I wear more than any other footwear that I own and sweat in incessantly. I’ve relied on Intuition Liners for several years, over several models of boots to help improve both the comfort and performance of the AT boots I use in the backcountry.

Intuition liners for ski boots

Benefits of Using Intuition Liners

As I have mentioned, I have used Intuition Liners a lot – over 10 years, to be exact. And in 4 different models of AT boots. By now I have a pretty good idea of the benefits they have provided for me in the backcountry. Here’s a summary of what I’ve found: • Better comfort – While Intuition offers liners that do not require thermo-molding, I have always used ones that are custom-moldable. Using heat, the liner is molded to fit my foot exactly, and can be molded to help relieve pressure points that I typically have on the top of my foot and on the “sixth toe”. I also tend to have a narrow heal, which typically slides around in a stock liner. But the molding capabilities of the Intuition Liners help lock my heal in place. • Decreases weight- While this might not be true of every AT boot, I have always found that the Intuition Liner is lighter than the stock liner provided with the boot. • Improved performance – I typically use the Power Wrap model of the Intuition Liners which has added to the stiffness of every AT boot that I have owned. The height of the liner allows pressure to be distributed over a greater area, thereby improving stiffness and performance on the descent. • Warmer – I am not sure exactly what the chemical compound is in Intuition Liners, but it helps keep my feet incredibly warm. I have poor circulation in my feet, yet I rarely have cold feet while using Intuition Liners in the backcountry. For contrast, Zip Fits, another custom liner that I currently use in my alpine/resort boots, are the coldest liners I have ever owned. • Longer lasting – In the rare case that I am able to use a stock liner, these liners may last me a season if I am lucky before they become too packed out to be useable. On the other hand, Intuition Liners have always lasted at least the life of each of my boot models, if not more. There have been times when I have been able to transfer the liners into a new boot if that boot has been retired. • Re-moldable – If the first molding didn’t quite do the job or the current molding gets worn out – or even if your liner outlasted your boot and you wish to transfer them to your new model, Intuition Liners are re-moldable.

There is really only one downfall I have found with using Inuition Liners. As I mentioned above, they keep my feet extremely warm. This means my feet are prone to sweating in these liners, which in turn produces a horrible odor. Nearly every time I use my boots I take measures to ensure that the liners dry between uses – things like taking the liner out of the boot or using boot dryers. I’ve used powders and sprays to try to reduce the odor, but have not had much luck. On their site, Intuition does give some suggestions for how to wash their liners and even lists a couple of products that they recommend for cleaning. I have yet to use these products, but I think I will be trying them in the future!

How Intuition Liners Work

Intuition Liners are made from a proprietary substance that they call “ EVA Foam ” . There are different varieties of EVA Foam and the compounds are blended together to achieve the desired density to make sure they have the proper elasticity and resilience. In the end, Intuition used close cell foams that have excellent memory (keep their shape once molded), strong, and non-toxic.

Which Liner is Best for You

Intuition offers over 25 different models of liners. Not all of them are for ski boots, but most of them are. Choosing which liner is best for you can be difficult, especially if you have not used their liners before. The model you choose should be based on various things, like how much extra space you have in your shell, if you intend to use a custom foot bed or not, what kind of skiing you plan to do, how much flex you want, and whether or not you have a high arch or a wide foot. Thankfully, Intuition has a guide to help you decide.

For myself, I prefer the Power Wrap because I am usually need to “round up” in size and it usually improves the stiffness of my boot – it is the stiffest model they provide. Additionally, this liner is good for people who need a little better fit in the heel.

Frank prefers the Pro Tour , as he likes the flexibility of movement which he gets with a tongue in the liner. The Pro Tour is offered in three different thicknesses to obtain the right fit with the shell. There are also three different tongue options. While it comes with the Flex Tongue, you can also swap it out for the Power Tongue or Thick Tongue.

Fitting Intuition Liners

After choosing the right Intuition Liner model and the desired size, if the liner is thermo-moldable, then you’ll want to get it custom fit. Intuition does provide suggestions for how you can do this at home . But, the better way is to request the help of a boot fitter at your local boot shop – preferably an Intuition dealer. If you purchase your liner at a local shop, then usually custom-molding is also included. But, check with your retailer before you buy. Intuition does offer a list of retailers that offer their products. In our hometown of Crested Butte, we recommend that you get them from Crested Butte Sports (LINK).

The Wrap on Intuition Liners

While Intuition Liners have caused my boots to produce an extra-aromatic odor, I have found that the benefits they have provided greatly outweigh this one downfall. The improved comfort and performance, decreased weight, and increased durability have allowed me to better enjoy my time in backcountry skiing. Currently, Intuition Liners range in price from $85 to $200, but they are well worth the additional purchase!

Great review – I’ve been running Intuition liners since the late 90’s and they are such a vast improvement over stock liners. I just ordered a pair of Pro Wrap liners for my alpine boots… as I’ve worn out the Power Wraps I currently have in them.

' src=

Thanks Michael! Let us know how you think the Pro Wrap compares with the Power Wrap once you have a chance to use them for a while!

Just installed the Pro Tongue in my Technica Cochises yesterday. Gonna head out on a tour later this week, can’t wait. I had DFP’s (Intuitions) in my BD Factors that I retired two seasons ago. They were so warm I could completely retire the (heavy) battery powered boot heaters I was forced to use prior. I was losing a toenail a year prior to that, even with the boot heaters.

Intuition Pro Tour Liner Review

May 21, 2018 mike.

Many models of alpine touring boots now come with excellent liners, but some still fall short. Intuition liners have been one of the benchmark aftermarket ski boot liner providers for years. The latest iteration of the Pro Tour model continues that legacy. In this review we’ll tell you what makes it such a good liner (spoiler alert: it’s excellent).

Intuition: A Small Company with a Reputation for Quality

The new Intuition Pro Tour Model

For over 20 years, a small company named Intuition Sports, Inc. based in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada has been making high performance replacement ski boot liners. They realized that having cold, sore feet didn’t have to be part of going skiing and that the liners that came with ski boots packed out really quickly.

“Packed out” means that a liner takes up less space than it did when new. Over time, the foam used in ski boot liners permanently compresses. This makes your boots feel sloppy, reduces your control and can even make your feet hurt.

A Brief History Lesson

In the 1990s, Intuition set out to make the best ski boot liner the world had ever seen. Now, they have the world’s most extensive line of high performance replacement ski boot liners (those are their words).

Their liners use a propriety foam that is very heat moldable and resists compression so they last much longer than most stock liners. It is a closed cell foam that Intuition makes in a variety of densities and thicknesses for different types of liners. They’ve come up with a custom blend of materials that has resulted in a material that is perfect for ski boot liners.

The foam has improved elasticity, resilience, temper and toughness. What this means is that Intuition liners are durable, warm, comfortable, lightweight, and have excellent shape memory. These liners can be heat-molded multiple times and they do not absorb any water.

Intuition liners are now used as the  stock liners in many production ski boots. This is a testament to their quality and how far Intuition has come as a company.

Current Intuition Product Line-up

Intuition claims they have the widest selection of high-performance liners, and I can’t find anything to dispute this. They have over 25 different models, from a basic alpine liner to liners for inline skates (aka roller blades). They have Junior specific liners, Women’s specific liners, liners for racers and liners for those that just hate their ski boots and want more comfort. There is something available for pretty much anyone.

Intuition Pro Tour liners.

One notable model that helped put Intuition on the map is the Powerwrap. This liner is different from traditional liners in that it doesn’t have a tongue. Instead, two sections of foam wrap one over the other. The result is a form-fitting liner that can really help increase the stiffness of a ski boot. From personal experience, I can say that these liners ski extremely well but are not idea for touring. Their range of motion isn’t great, but that’s where the Pro Tour really shines.

The Intuition Pro Tour Liner Review

Pro tour liner stats.

Rear view of the Intuition Pro Tour.

Weight (sz 29, MV): 303 grams (10.7 oz) Sizes: Mondo 22-33 (US 4-15) Thicknesses (Volumes):   Low (thinnest), Medium, High (thickest) Tongues Available: Flex (included), Power, Thick Price:  $198 Additional Tongue Price: $40

The standard Intuition Pro Tour comes in the Medium Volume with the Flex Tongue, which is stiffer at the top and flexes at the bottom. If your shell fit is quite tight (1/2″ or less behind the heel) the Low Volume liner is recommended, and if your shell fit is loose, the Higher Volume will take up some additional space. That isn’t to say that an Intuition liner will fix a bad shell fit. It might help, but won’t cure it completely.

There are 2 other tongues available aside from the included Flex Tongue. The Power Tongue is stiff all the way down and the Thick Tongue is the highest volume tongue option that Intuition offers, and is thick and stiff all the way down. If you need to take up some space in front of your shin, the Thick Tongue will do so.

At a price tag of almost $200 USD, the Pro Tour Liner isn’t cheap, but in many cases the benefits make them well worth it. Personally, the improvements they make over my stock liners in terms of touring comfort and weight savings easily justifies the price.

Advantages of the Pro Tour Liner

Depending on how good the stock liner is in your touring boots, the Pro Tour can offer a number of advantages. For me personally, the biggest gain was in weight savings. Compared to the stock liner in my Tecnica Cochise 130 Pro , the Intuition Pro Tour is around 230 grams (8 oz) lighter… per liner . That’s a total weight savings of around 460 grams (over 1 full pound!) which is quite significant.

Heat-Moldable Foam

As mentioned above, the foam that Intuition uses in their liners is repeatedly heat moldable and will really conform to your foot if molded properly. The heat molding will take care of any minor pressure points you might have and if you have a decent shell fit, your feet will be in heaven. If you buy these in a shop, they’ll take care of the heat molding for you. If you buy them online, you can tackle it yourself, as heat molding these liners at home is a breeze. Intuition includes a ‘fit kit’ that includes all of the necessary tools and instructions to properly heat fit your new liners.

Intuition’s foam is also famously warm, and the Pro Tours follow this tradition. Although not as warm as the Power Wrap in my experience, these are still much warmer than most stock liners.

More Comfort for Your Feet

Another comfort related feature in the Intuition Pro Tour is a bit of extra padding at the end of the toe box. For those of us whose toes unfortunately bang against the end of your boots sometimes (this happens to me when skinning on flats…ugh), this is a game changer. This past winter on my first tour of the season with an older pair of liners I bruised my big toe-nail enough that it eventually fell off (yuck). Shortly after that I got a new pair of Pro Tour liners and will never look back. Even with a bruised toe-nail my feet were in heaven.

intuition pro tour speed laces

These liners come with a speed-lace system that is intended to help keep your feet locked into position even when your boots are loose while touring. In my experience, this system works quite well. I have had very minimal hot spots from touring after around 20 days in these liners. If you aren’t a fan of laces, they are easy to remove.

Depending on your boots, the speed lace ‘button’ might get trapped between your shell and the tongue, so prepare for a bit of fiddling to get it comfortable.

Intuition has strategically placed a flex-panel on the rear of the liner. This panel is a more flexible foam, and allows for more movement when touring and works quite well.

Intuition Pro Tour Review - Flex Panel

For many skiers, the holy grail of boot fitting is how much control you have over your skis. With a perfect fit, as in a plug, custom-molded race boot, every little motion of your foot is translated directly to the skis they are driving. Of course when backcountry skiing, comfort is equally or more important, as you spend a higher percentage of your time hiking/skinning. That said, having better control over your skis is still an advantage.

The great thing about the Pro Tour is that it gives you added control without sacrificing comfort. The heel pocket is ergonomically designed and provides amazing hold, even compared to the new Cochise Pro liner, which has been praised for its excellent heel pocket.

Final Thoughts

As mentioned above, the liner comes in 3 thickness/volumes and with 3 different tongue options that are easily removable. With all this customization, finding a configuration that will work for your boots should be a snap.

One thing to note is that many people, myself included, find that the easiest way to get these liners on is a bit different than what you might be used to. Instead of shoving the liner in your boot and then putting your foot in, you start with the liner out of the boot. Stick your foot in it, lace it up tight, and then put your liner-clad foot into the shell. It sounds really odd, but it works and becomes second nature.

I spent a full winter with these liners in my Tecnica Cochise 130 Pros, and will never look back. When touring, the weight savings and freedom of movement makes every day better. They’re stiff enough for a day at the resort, and kept my feet warmer than the stock liner too.

If you have any additional thoughts or questions, feel free to leave them below.

Might be revisiting something here but as someone who is fairly new to skinning, and is convinced that Intuition liners can be the answer to all my problems, wonder if I can tap in to some of your the on-hill-experiences? I have a pair of Salomon Quest Max BC 120 boots (this seasons, i.e 2013'-14) and they're really not as stiff as I'd was expecting. I also get big problems with sore shins (though it's much better in the Salomon boots as they're a way better fit than the Tecnicas I used to have) I'm looking at the Intuition Pro Tour, and the Power Wrap - basically I want to stiffen the boot up a bit, and have heard the wrap-style liner can be effective at reducing shin problems. But does the stiffness of the PW negate the point of having a boot with a hike-mode? I'm not planning long tours, probably an hour or two max at this stage, and from the sounds of things, plenty of people here tour in the Power Wraps with no problems. As an alternative, if the Pro Tour is better for touring, would that liner make any difference to the stiffness of the boot compared to the factory liner (which actually feels pretty good to me for an out-of-the-box liner...) Cheers all

snapt is online now

Sounds like the power wrap is the right choice. I've stiffened up some older, softer, AT boots with them. You'll loose some ROM but if you're tours are shorter it'll be worth it the way they ski.

Shorty_J is online now

The power wrap will stiffen the boot up, but it will restrict your rearward range of motion in walk mode. Front flex in walk mode should be unnafected.

I bought a pair of dal bello Sherpas last spring and tried to make them a bit stiffer with the power wrap liner. I ended up going back to the tour liner after one incredibly painful day because the shape of the power wrap was just all wrong for the boot. To be honest, the only times I notice that the boot is less stiff than my old kryptons with the medium tongues is when I'm either skiing with bad technique or in icy conditions that I'd rather not be skiing in in any boot.

I use to have the solly Quest 14 boots. I'm not sure how similar/dissimilar they are, but when I went to Intuition for liners to stiffen them up it was a no-go. The way the boot works, a good portion of it's existing stiffness comes from the plastic sewn in to the liner itself, not the shell. So the shell is quite soft and lacking, IMO. Even with a powerwrap (the stiffest), I could basically bend forward so much it was like a hiking boot. and it was softer than the stock liner, although better fit. I've moved on from solly AT boots. Not sure if the BC Max 120 are similar design though. The pro-tour will make it waaaaay softer; but does work very well with a different shell.

I have just done this in my Titans and Maestrales. Swapped the power wraps in my Titans for the Scarpa Intuition liner (basically a pro tour). The power wrap stiffened up the Maestrales significantly, but reduced the tourablity significantly. The Pro Tours in the Titans softened the boot and made it more comfortable. The Scarpas still tour okay, but not what I would want on a long tour. I did about four hours of easy touring/skiing in them and my feet while okay, but weren't nearly as happy in them as with the stock liner (pro tour). So yes, for what you want it would work with the power wraps, as long as you keep the tours short. Power wraps will definitely stiffen up the boot.
I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity... iscariot

Bumping this old thread. Toured in Powerwraps in my MTN Labs. I liked that they stiffened the boot up, but picked up bad heel blisters after just 3k vert. Never had heel blisters with the Mtn Lab stock liner. I'm guessing my feet probably being hotter in the Powerwrap + no laces to lock my heel down was the problem. My gut tells me I should ditch the Powerwraps and buy a pair of new Pro Tours, but maybe there's something to be done to save the Powerwraps? (those Powerwraps are from an different pair of boots of mine so not a huge deal if I just don't end up using them)

There's always the Tour Wrap to consider. Mine just arrived, but haven't been molded yet. One item of interest I just learned is that they have a lacing system. This might be helpful with your blister problem. ... Thom

been using TourWraps in the new Maestrale XTs. Significantly better fit than the stock Scarpa Intuitions and the ROM is fantastic. For my higher insteps I've had much better luck with the Wrap liners. My daily resort boots have PowerWraps in them (Lupo120AXs) Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk
Thanks guys - Tour Wrap seem like they could be perfect. I think that lacing system is exactly what my heel needs. Appreciate the offer on borrowing the Pro Tour's too. If you've got a 28 I'll def let you know if I want to take you up on that.
No luck. I’m a 29.

Power wrap foam is too dense for touring. The excellent heel hold will crush you when your heel inevitably moves when you tour.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

intuition pro tour wrap liner

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
