GM and Pilot Flying J fast charging

Pilot and Flying J travel centers, in partnership with GM, are getting ready to install more than 2,000 EV chargers across the country, including trailer-ready pull-through stations.

Get ready for a whole lot more electric vehicle charging while you’re on the road. GM and Pilot are planning to add 2,000 stalls at up to 500 truck stops across America. They’ll be open to all, but with special deals for customers driving GM vehicles.

Fast Charging, Plenty to Do

Adding 2,000 charging stalls at Pilot and Flying J travel centers might be the biggest deal to hit EV charging since Tesla began building out its network of Supercharger stations . Why? Because with more than 500 locations, Pilot Flying J is the biggest chain of truck stops in America.

Pilot knows how to help you find things to do when you’re on a road trip break . The company’s travel centers have restaurants, hot and cold deli services, coffee, and plenty of snacks — plus enough shopping to keep travelers busy for hours.

Tow-Friendly EV Stations

GM and Pilot Flying J fast charging

The network of EV chargers will be travel-friendly as well. They’ll offer amenities we don’t typically see at charge sites, like the ability to pull through to charge without unhitching if you’re towing a trailer with your electric truck as well as canopies to keep you out of the weather.

Pilot is already planning to add free Wi-Fi at most of its locations and add more seating and lounge areas. This is part of a $1 billion investment it calls New Horizons.

EVgo eXtend will provide the charge stations, which will offer Level 3 charging at up to 350 kW. That’s enough to boost the fastest-charging EVs from 10% to 80% in as little as 20 minutes.

GM is already working with EVgo to add 3,250 fast chargers to its network by the end of 2025, with those stations mostly located in cities and suburbs .

“We are committed to an all-electric, zero-emissions future, and ensuring that the right charging infrastructure is in place is a key piece of the puzzle,” said Mary Barra, GM chair and CEO.

“With travel centers across North America, Pilot Company is an ideal collaborator to reach a broad audience of EV drivers.”

Perks for GM Owners

The charging stations will be co-branded Pilot Flying J and Ultium Charge 360 — the latter being GM’s charge network brand. They will be open to charging for all brands of electric vehicles, but GM customers, like GMC Hummer EV owners, will get some perks.

Benefits like reservations not offered to other brands, as well as charging discounts, are part of the plan for GM owners. The stations will also integrate into the real-time charger availability in GM’s vehicle apps as well as offer Plug and Charge streamlined charging compatibility.

Pilot Company CEO Shameek Konar had this to say:

Our travel centers are well-equipped to accommodate EV charging with 24/7 amenities and convenient proximity to major roadways across the country. We look forward to collaborating with GM and the U.S. Department of Transportation to make convenient coast-to-coast EV travel a reality through our national network of travel centers.

GM and Pilot provided a map showing the charging stations it expects to have operational next year. The map shows hundreds of truck stop charging locations located along nearly all major U.S. interstate corridors.

It’s just a small part of the overall GM Ultium Charge 360 plan. The company is looking to have fast-charge sites every 50 miles across the U.S. It also intends to install up to 40,000 chargers in urban areas in collaboration with its dealers and enable access to more than 100,000 charge points in the U.S. and Canada.

Pilot Travel Centers, GM And EVgo Launch Full-Blown EV Charging Stations

17 sites are already online, with hundreds to follow in the next few years..

Pilot Travel Centers LLC, General Motors and EVgo charging station

Pilot Travel Centers, General Motors, and EVgo jointly announced the opening of the first batch of 17 locations of their new national EV fast charging network, hinted at in mid-2022.

The new fast charging stations are available in 13 states (AZ, FL, GA, ID, KY, MI, MO, OH, OK, TN, TX, VA, and WA), at existing Pilot and Flying J travel center locations (the list can be found in the EVgo app).

The most important thing about the new stations is that they are basically equivalent to fuel stations, which means not only outstanding locations, but also an elevated charging experience including convenient pull-through charging stalls (friendly for towing and large vehicles), multiple high-power chargers (up to 350-kW, currently with CCS1 connectors), canopies, 24/7 amenities (access to restrooms, food and beverage options, and free Wi-Fi) and monitoring around-the-clock by onsite staff.

The good news does not end here, as the electrification of Pilot and Flying J travel center locations is promised to progress very quickly with at least 25 locations to be ready by the end of this year (with a total of 100 fast-charging stalls), and approximately 200 locations by the end of 2024.

According to the plan, outlined in July 2022 and repeated recently, the coast-to-coast network of fast charging sites will consist of 500 locations and 2,000 charging stalls (about four per station on average).

GM and Pilot Company to Build Out Coast-to-Coast EV Fast Charging Network

The layout of the stations and amenities were already warmly welcomed by the EV community in the comments. Let's note that this is another approach to elevate the EV charging experience and a clear sign of where the industry is heading.

The joint press release says that the three partners "have worked to provide current and future EV drivers with a thoughtful, practical and accessible charging experience for long distance travel."

The network is now in an early stage (see details at pilotflyingj.com/ev-charging ) but soon it will be available through many channels, including GM’s vehicle brand apps, Pilot’s myRewards Plus app, the EVgo app, PlugShare "and other applications designed for EV drivers."

Next year, in spring 2024, GM and Pilot Travel Centers intend to introduce exclusive benefits for GM drivers, including the ability to reserve a charger and discounts on charging.

Adam Wright, Pilot Travel Centers LLC chief executive officer said: "EV drivers are eager for a better charging experience and to have more charging locations along America’s most traveled corridors. These new charging locations and the many more to come, will be critical for improving range confidence. As interest in EVs continues to grow, we believe our network can be a catalyst to getting more EV drivers on the road."

GM, partners to build 2,000 EV chargers at nearly 500 Pilot Flying J travel centers

Electric cars are parked at a charging station in Sacramento, Calif., on April 13, 2022. General Motors, Pilot Travel Centers and EVgo said Thursday, July 14, 2022, that they will build 2,000 charging stalls at “up to” 500 Pilot Flying J sites across the nation. GM says construction will start this summer with the first direct current fast chargers operating sometime in 2023.

A major automaker, large truck stop chain and an electric vehicle charging company are proposing a network that would put charging plugs at 50-mile intervals along U.S. highways.

General Motors, Pilot Travel Centers and EVgo said Thursday they will build 2,000 charging stalls at "up to" 500 Pilot Flying J sites across the nation.

The companies wouldn't answer questions about the cost or how much each will pay, but a statement says they're counting on government grant money and programs from utilities to help put the network in place.

Construction will start this summer with the first chargers operating sometime in 2023, GM spokesman Philip Lienert said. The network should be finished in a couple of years, he said.

GM said the network would be along highways to enable interstate travel.

When finished, the chargers will help the Biden administration move toward its goal of 500,000 stations nationwide by 2030 as it tries to get people to switch away from gasoline-powered vehicles to fight climate change.

Bipartisan infrastructure legislation approved by Congress ended up providing just half of the $15 billion that Biden had envisioned to fulfill a campaign promise of 500,000 charging stations by 2030.

Even so, the $7.5 billion for charging stations has been a catalyst for industry investments, said National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy. "It's exciting to see leading companies respond by setting their own ambitious goals, and investing in a convenient, reliable, and affordable nationwide charging network," she said.

Biden's Build Back Better proposal aimed to fill the gap but is stalled in Congress.

Administration officials now say the infrastructure law will help "pave" the way for up to 500,000 charging outlets by 2030. That's different than charging stations, which could have several outlets. They say private investments could help fill the gap. Currently there are nearly 124,000 public EV outlets in the U.S. at more than 49,000 stations.

The Department of Transportation said that $5 billion of the $7.5 billion for EV chargers will go to states, which can partner with other groups. The remaining $2.5 billion would go to competitive grants for charging projects. No grants have been awarded yet.

The new charging network is a step toward building out a charging network that will make the public more comfortable traveling in EVs, said S&P Global Mobility Principal Analyst Stephanie Brinley.

"The infrastructure of electric vehicles needs to be a sort of combination of locations like Pilot," she said. "It probably needs this level of support from many different voices to make it work."

Pilot says it has has more than 750 locations in 44 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces.

GM has set a goal of building only electric passenger vehicles by 2035. It has pledged to have 30 electric vehicle models for sale globally by 2025.

It has promised to invest nearly $750 million in chargers, but wouldn't say how much of that has been spent.

GM owners would get discounts and exclusive charging reservations on the network, the company said.

Pilot looks to the future of energy with 'coast-to-coast' EV charging network with GM

pilot travel centers ev charging

To get more consumers comfortable with driving electric vehicles, General Motors and Pilot Company have pledged to build a "coast-to-coast" EV charging network at Pilot Flying J travel centers across the U.S.

The network is intended to eliminate battery "range anxiety" for drivers taking their EVs on the road. Electric vehicles now account for 4.6% of all passenger vehicles being sold in the U.S., and registrations for new EVs soared earlier this year.

When finished, the network will include 2,000 direct current fast chargers across 500 Pilot and Pilot Flying J locations, company leaders said Wednesday.

"We are targeting 50-mile intervals to make convenient, reliable, and safe coast-to-coast EV travel a reality," Pilot CEO Shameek Konar said.

The rollout of charging stations, which will be scattered across the U.S., begins in early 2023, and the charging network could expand as demand increases.

EV charging stations: Biden to require EV stations every 50 miles on federal highways

Considering an electric vehicle?: Here's what to expect

Creating reliable charging infrastructure is key to convincing customers to buy EVs as primary vehicles . GM has committed to an electric future with its Ultium battery platform and models like the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, the Cadillac Lyriq and the Chevrolet Equinox EV.

"We think this is a bit of a natural evolution of where product is moving where customer behavior is going," Chief GM EV Officer Travis Hester said. "And we're ahead of it a little bit, quite frankly, and that's what we want to be."

The partnership builds on Pilot's  $1 billion initiative to transform its travel centers into a "destination" stop for travelers , with upgraded restrooms, more food offerings, and free Wi-Fi in some locations.

EVgo, already helping GM expand its network of more than 100,000 charging stations, will supply, install and maintain the charging stations at Pilot locations.

How will the Pilot EV chargers work?

The chargers will be co-branded as Pilot Flying J and Ultium Charge 360, but any vehicle compatible with the Combined Charging System network can use the system, not just GM EVs.

The units will charge vehicles at a rate of up to 350 kilowatts. Hester estimated it would take about 10 minutes to charge for 150 miles.

The cost to charge an EV at Pilot will depend on the location and the price of electricity. Hester said GM EV drivers would receive a discount, along with access to exclusive reservations and a "streamlined" charging experience through GM's app.

Many of the charging stalls will include features like canopies or pull-through capability for EVs pulling trailers.

GM is investing almost $750 million to expand charging across urban and rural communities. This is its first partnership with a retailer like Pilot, which gives it access to prime real estate along travel corridors nationwide.

“We are committed to an all-electric, zero-emissions future, and ensuring that the right charging infrastructure is in place is a key piece of the puzzle,” Mary Barra, GM Chair and Chief Executive Officer, said in a press release. “With travel centers across North America, Pilot Company is an ideal collaborator to reach a broad audience of EV drivers.”

Pilot travel centers serve an estimated 1.3 million guests per day. It is ranked No. 7 on Forbes' list of largest private companies in the U.S. and is headquartered in Knoxville.

EVgo has more than 850 charging locations across 30 states and serves more than 375,000 customers.

On December 5, General Motors , along with its partners EVgo and Pilot Flying J travel centers, announced the opening of 17 EV charging stations as part of its “coast-to-coast EV charging network.”

Currently, the charging stations are spread across 13 states and GM plans to bring the total number of stations to 25 before the end of the year.

Aside from several 350kw chargers that can be adjusted based on a car’s EV charging requirements, GM claims that “many” stations will also have pull-through charging stations, plug-and-charge compatibility, 24/7 personnel access, protective canopies, and round-the-clock access. Along with free Wi-Fi, they will also provide standard rest-stop facilities like food and bathrooms.

Over the next five years, GM, EVgo, and Pilot Flying J intend to build at least 2,000 EV charging stations, and by the end of 2024, the companies will add 200 more. The stations will be located at approximately 500 Pilot Flying J truck stops and managed by EV charging company EVgo.

The chargers will have dual branding, “Ultium Charge 360” and “Pilot Flying J,” representing the two businesses contributing to the project’s finances. Implying that, aside from Tesla’s Supercharger network, the new stations will be among few in the U.S. to have an automaker’s emblem.

Additionally, GM has stated that it plans to utilize Tesla’s open-source charging connector for its next EVs since establishing the partnership with EVgo and Pilot. Customers will be able to purchase Tesla adapters from the automaker “early next spring.” In 2025, GM will produce its first electric car compatible with a Tesla charging station.

Pilot Travel Centers , General Motors and EVgo today opened the first 17 locations of their  previously announced  national electric vehicle fast charging network. Now available in 13 states, the network features an elevated charging experience, providing EV travelers access to the same amenities offered at existing Pilot and Flying J travel center locations.

Pilot Travel Centers, GM, and EVgo, along with multiple public agencies and utilities, have worked together to grow the nation’s public fast charging infrastructure, creating a model for how public-private collaboration can make measurable progress in accelerating broader access to EV charging.

The three industry leaders have worked to provide current and future EV drivers with a thoughtful, practical and accessible charging experience for long distance travel.

Many locations throughout the network offer a variety of 24/7 amenities, products and services, including:

– Multiple fast charging stalls at each site, with chargers capable of delivering up to 350kW. – Canopies to help protect drivers from the elements during charging. – Pull-through charging stalls to accommodate EV towing. – Centrally located chargers in well-lit areas, monitored around-the-clock by onsite staff. – Access to restrooms, food and beverage options, and free Wi-Fi. – Plug and Charge compatibility for a streamlined charging experience.

A seamless digital user experience has also been built into this network — EV travelers will be able to easily find available charging locations via GM’s vehicle brand apps, Pilot’s  myRewards Plus  app, the  EVgo app , PlugShare and other applications designed for EV drivers.

Beginning in spring 2024, GM and Pilot Travel Centers LLC will introduce exclusive benefits for GM drivers, including the ability to reserve a charger, and discounts on charging. All EV travelers can also save at Pilot and Flying J locations with regular deals on food, beverages and merchandise available in the myRewards Plus app.

“As GM continues to advance its vision of an all-electric future, we’re collaborating broadly to accelerate access to convenient charging at home and on the go, offering additional confidence to prospective single vehicle customers considering an EV,” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. “This new network will provide EV drivers with a quality charging experience and greater peace of mind during road trips.”

By the end of 2023, it is expected that at least 25 Pilot and Flying J travel centers will feature EV fast charging, with approximately 200 locations targeted by the end of 2024. In total, the network will include up to 2,000 high-power fast charging stalls at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers across the U.S., connecting urban and rural communities. Expansion sites for this network have been strategically selected for continued electrification of highly traveled corridors in every corner of the nation.

EVgo, GM and Pilot open first of hundreds of fast charging stations

Last year, GM, EVgo and Pilot Travel Centers announced they would be setting up a DC fast chargers at hundreds of Pilot and Flying J centers across the country for an EV charging network. Tuesday, the companies opened the first of those locations, with more coming this year and next.

Just 17 locations have opened so far, and they're in 13 states. There are more coming by the end of the year for a total of 25. The rollout is set to accelerate through next year. By the end of 2024, the companies expect to have 200 locations open and operating. Eventually, there will be 500 Pilot and Flying J stations with chargers .

While each location can vary, the companies tout a number of appealing features for these stations. Many will actually be covered and brightly lit with staff on hand. Chargers with 350-kW charging speeds will be available, and many chargers will be arranged for pulling through with a trailer. And of course, as they will be at Pilot and Flying J centers, there will be food and drink options along with free Wi-Fi available. Furthermore, these locations are along major highways, so should be in good places for road trippers.

Here’s where Virginia is installing its first 18 NEVI EV chargers

Avatar for Michelle Lewis

Virginia is handing out $11.295 million in federal grants to install 18 NEVI-compliant EV chargers – here’s where they’re going.

This week, the Virginia Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the first round of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) federal grant winners. The EV charging stations will be sited along designated  Alternative Fuel Corridors  of interstates and major highways.

The federal NEVI program allocates $5 billion over five years to help US states create a network of EV charging stations. The funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The NEVI program requires EV charging stations to be available every 50 miles and within one travel mile of the Alternative Fuel Corridor. EV charging stations must include at least four ports with connectors capable of simultaneously charging four EVs at 150 kilowatts (kW) each, with a total station power capacity of 600 kW or more.

The charging stations must have 24-hour public accessibility and provide amenities like restrooms, food and beverage, and shelter.

Out of the 18 federal grant recipients, eight are in the Richmond area; four are in the Staunton area, three are in Bristol; and Salem, Hampton Roads, and Fredericksburg are each getting an NEVI-compliant EV charging station. VDOT does not state when the chargers are expected to be installed, but notices to proceed appear to be issued around three months after the grant announcements.

Retailers such as Circle K, BP, Love’s Travel Stops, Amoco, Pilot Travel Center, and Valero are on the list . Some motels that are near 24-hour amenities are also on the list.

Charge Ahead Partnership executive director Jay Smith said, “We applaud VDOT for awarding several of the grants in this first round to businesses that have been serving drivers for decades and will be serving drivers for years to come. These grants will eventually dry up, so every dollar that goes to a business positioned to grow this investment into a sustainable operation that is not dependent on federal funds is a win for the Commonwealth.”

Virginia will receive $106 million of NEVI grants from 2022 to 2027 to help businesses to build, own and operate DC fast charging stations.

Officials gathered last week to break ground on the 170,995-square-feet mega-store. This Walmart will include a 16-pump fuel station at 14100 Limonite Ave.

The store should be open by spring 2025, with an estimated 300 new employees.

“We are tremendously excited to have officially broken ground on our newest supercenter, which will be the first Walmart in the city,” said Frankie Ahumada, Walmart’s regional general manager.

The supercenter also will have an EV charging station, online grocery pickup and delivery services, an auto center, deli, meat and bakery departments, pharmacy with health services, a vision center and garden center.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Eastvale as we break ground on our new Walmart Supercenter. This venture promises new job opportunities and essential goods and services, but it also reflects the City Council’s commitment to economic growth. We look forward to the positive impact this partnership will have on our vibrant city,” said Eastvale Mayor Christian Dinco.

Flying J ground lease sets new records

The Irvine-based investment firm Greens Group is celebrating the recent sale of a single-tenant property in Jurupa Valley that scored several records.

The Pilot Flying J Travel Center in Jurupa Valley recently sold for $14 million, setting records for its sales price and price per square feet for a Pilot ground lease, according to RealSource Group in Newport Beach.

The buyer was another Irvine investor, which the brokerage declined to identify.

“This sale represents a notable milestone, setting nationwide benchmarks for a Pilot ground lease,” Austin Blodgett at RealSource. “The acquisition also marked the buyer’s first net-lease purchase. The buyer was particularly drawn to the property’s underlying real estate value and the unique security offered by the Pilot brand, now wholly owned by Berkshire Hathaway under the leadership of Warren Buffett, further bolstering the buyer’s confidence in the investment.”

Pilot Flying J’s absolute triple-net ground lease relieves the buyer of landlord responsibilities, Blodgett noted.

“Corporate-backed absolute ground leases are popular among investors, seeking simplicity in their holdings. Pilot Flying J has more than 14 years remaining on the initial lease term with four five-year options and 10% rental increases every five years,” he said.

The travel center includes including 12 fueling lanes, a drive-thru Wendy’s, Cinnabon, PJ Fresh Marketplace convenience store, a Western Union, 107 truck parking spots, 48 reserved parking spots, two ATMs, CAT-certified scales and nine on-site showers.

Military landlords starting to install home EV charging stations

pilot travel centers ev charging

Thousands of military families living in privatized housing on military installations now have access to in-home charging stations for their electric vehicles, as at least four privatized housing landlords have begun rolling out programs.

Residents don’t pay for the installation of the Level 2 charging stations, which can be installed in garages and carports, where the programs are available. They do pay for the amount of time they use to charge their vehicles with these new charging stations. But otherwise, military families don’t pay for utilities currently in privatized housing, where they may have been plugging in their cars to wall outlets.

“Residents have requested Level 2 EV charging because it’s safer and faster than other charging alternatives,” said Justin Kern, executive general manager of Lendlease Communities, in a response to Military Times. “Level 2 charging can take as little as five to six hours to reach a full vehicle charge. In contrast, Level 1 charging (plugging an EV directly into a regular home electrical outlet) is potentially unsafe and can take 24 hours or longer to complete.”

According to Kern, about 7,800 homes are eligible for the chargers at the bases Lendlease has rolled out so far. In late 2023, the pilot program was launched at Soaring Heights Communities at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona; and Cavalry Family Housing at Fort Cavazos near Killeen, Texas. This year, Lendlease rolled out the program at Atlantic Marine Corps Communities at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Havelock, North Carolina. Later this year, the charging stations will come to Hickam Communities in Honolulu serving Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam; and the Island Palm Communities serving seven installations on Oahu.

Depending on the results of these rollouts, Lendlease will consider expanding to more of its communities, Kern said.

The companies are using a national provider of EV charging services, TRO Energy Solutions to cover the cost of installation, setup and maintenance of the individual Level 2 charging stations. Residents don’t pay for those costs, which can be upwards of $1,000, depending on the area. Residents enroll in a monthly charging subscription for ongoing usage, using the ChargeTime app.

Other military landlords that have begun to provide electric charging stations at homes include:

  • The Michaels Organization recently delivered its first electric charging stations to residents at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland and MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The company plans to deliver these charging stations to all the privatized family housing it owns and manages at 11 military installations across the country, officials announced.
  • Balfour Beatty Communities began their pilot program last summer offering Level 2 in-home charging stations at Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut; and Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
  • Hunt Military Communities launched four pilot locations with in-home charging stations late last year, including Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Joint Base Pearl-Harbor Hickam, Hawaii; and Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Pricing for the charging options is based on regional utility costs, Kern said. Lendlease residents subscribe to one of three monthly packages for different tiers of energy usage, based on anticipated miles driven per month. Any unused kilowatt-hours or miles roll over to the next month.

The faster the charging, the higher the cost, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to Edmunds.com , it costs about $11 to charge an electric car with a 65 kilowatt-hour battery at home using a Level 2 charger, assuming electricity costs $0.17 per kilowatt-hour, which is the national average. The Level 2 charger can be run on a 240-volt household outlet, usually in the garage or driveway.

Department of Defense officials paused utilities billing across privatized housing a few years ago. The utilities and rent are included in the monthly allotment paid to their housing landlord, which generally equals their entire Basic Allowance for Housing. A number of residents are using their regular home electrical outlets, Level 1 charging, 120-volt wall plug-ins, for their cars. It’s not known when the services will resume billing residents for utilities.

But they are paying for the EV charging, which is Level 2 EV charging equipment.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that by 2030 there will be 33 million EVs on the road and 28 million EV charging ports will be needed to support them. The majority of charging will be at home and work, with the public network for opportunity charging and less common long trips.

Of the 28 million charging ports, 25.7 million (92%) are expected to be private Level 1 (L1) and Level 2 (L2) chargers at single-family homes. Additionally, there will be an estimated 2.1 million (7.6%) public and private L2 chargers at multifamily homes, workplaces, stores, restaurants, and hotels. Estimates show 182,000 (~1%) DC Fast charging ports would be needed at public charging stations, primarily to support those with no access to consistent off-street parking, as well as for long distance travel.

2030 National EV Charging Network Size

  • Level 1 (L1) refers to 120v AC charging from a typical US household outlet.
  • Level 2 (L2) refers to 240v AC charging like that used for a household electric dryer.
  • DC Fast charging in this study refers to charge rates of 150kW or higher.
  • Low power DC charging (e.g., 50 kW) is omitted from the study’s baseline scenario on the basis of assumed driver preferences for DC charging that is as fast as possible and 2030 vehicle technology scenarios where batteries are capable of accepting at least 150 kW of peak power.

The store is the first Buc-ee’s in Colorado and the company’s farthest west. The grand opening drew hundreds of people, many of whom waited outside for hours. The crowd included first-timers along with devotees of the on-steroids gas station and convenience store.

Gerry Almaraz drove in from Scottsbluff, Neb., for the opening, arriving at midnight Sunday. He’s been to several Buc-ee’s in Texas but had never gone to a grand opening.

“I wanted to experience that at least once in my life. I’m not sure when they’re going to open another one so I thought hey, let’s give it a go,” Almaraz said. “I love Buc-ee’s.”

And he explained why. “Nostalgia, the feeling that everybody knows Buc-ee’s. The food is good. So are the snacks, the people.”

Company officials were waiting to see if Buc-ee’s would generate the same kind of buzz that the entry of other regional favorites to the Colorado market have. Crowds turned out for the first Krispy Kremes and In-N-Out Burgers.

“Sometimes we have a hundred people, sometimes 200, sometimes 300 waiting outside for hours on end for 6 a.m.,” said Josh Smith, director of operations for Buc-ee’s.

Smith estimated 400 to 500 people were waiting Monday morning to be welcomed inside out of the 30-some-degree cold.

“Some of them have been here since 10 last night. There’s just a lot of energy, excitement,” said Smith, whose visit to northern Colorado marks his 28th grand opening of a Buc-ee’s.

The Johnstown store is tied with a Buc-ee’s in Tennessee for being the world’s largest convenience store, Smith said. But not for long. The original Buc-ee’s location in Luling, Texas, is being replaced with a center slightly more than 75,000 square feet.

“We’re rebuilding it to make it the world’s largest so Texas can have that title back,” Smith said.

Aidan Pearis of Longmont, was dressed in a Buc-ee’s Christmas sweater over a Buc-ee the beaver hoodie. His brother, Doug, was more low-key. His paraphernalia was limited to a Buc-ee’s ball cap.

The younger brother goes to school in Atlanta and stops at several Buc-ee’s traveling back and forth. “I’ve been to 15 different Buc-ee’s already,” he said.

What’s the attraction? “It has an aura. I don’t know,” Aidan said.

“There’s something unique about it,” said Doug, who makes some of the trips.

“And on a road trip it has like the best food, the best bathrooms,” Aidan said.

“To me personally it just reminds me of driving back and forth,” Doug said.

“Yeah, good memories, fun times,” Aidan added.

Asked how he would describe a Buc-ee’s to people who are new to the stores, Smith replied, “sensory overload.”

“From all the different things that you see when you walk through the doors, to all the different smells, from the savory brisket being chopped on the board right in front of you to the nuts being roasted,” Smith said. “It’s just sweet and savory and the sights are just overwhelming.”

There are outdoor barbecue pits. The stores sell camping supplies. Food and snacks run the gamut from brisket sandwiches, fudge, freshly made pastries and beaver nuggets, which are caramel-coated corn pops.

And there are what fans say and the company swears are “the cleanest restrooms in America.” The ones in the Johnstown store feature red and green lights above the long rows of doors to signal which stalls are occupied or open.

Outside, there are 116 fuel pumps and 12 charging stations for electric vehicles. The travel centers aren’t truck stops and 18-wheelers aren’t welcome at most of its 48 sites, a practice that has been criticized by truckers.

The company has said i ts travel centers are “optimized for passenger vehicles.”

Smith said Buc-ee’s decided to build a store in Colorado because Denver is a major hub with a lot of traffic flowing through it. The company located the store in Johnstown in northern Colorado because of its accessibility and the community’s receptiveness.

The store is at the southwest corner of Interstate 25 and Colorado 60. The address is 5201 Nugget Road, The region is one of the fastest-growing in the state.

Johnstown Mayor Troy Mellon said the town is “thrilled to welcome the first Colorado Buc-ee’s.”

“Buc-ee’s is recognized as a premier retail destination that will attract customers from far and wide, thereby enriching our regional economy,” Mellon said in a statement.

The store’s anticipated annual sales will be about $25 million, Mellon said. He joined other local officials for a grand opening ceremony later in the morning.

The new store has a staff of approximately 250 full-time employees. The pay is in the $18-$22 range and benefits include medical and dental coverage and a 6% matching 401(k) contribution after one year on the job.

It didn’t take long for the throng of shoppers to fill baskets and carts. There were plenty of stuffed Buc-ee beavers, T-shirts, hats and beaver nuggets piled up at the checkouts.

Chip and Liz Wasson of Fort Collins were still walking around, checking out the offerings. Chip has been to a couple of the stores in Texas.

“This is my first time in one but I’ve heard a lot about them,” Liz said. “It’s wild.”

Chip said the Johnstown store is pretty much the same as other locations he has visited. “Which I think is a good thing for Buc-ee’s,” he said. “It’s a good representation of Buc-ee’s-ness if you will. I think it will be a good in-between northern Colorado and Denver, a good place to stop.”
