Normally you need the following vaccinations ( but please always consult a doctor ):

  • Yellow Fever (you must have this can even be checked on arrival, especially when flying within East Africa)

For Malaria you need to take tablets,  Malarone or Lariam. Malarone is mostly used (please always consult a doctor).

Hygiene is not at the same standard as in your home country, so we advise you to bring a disinfectant cream with you. Always drink bottled water instead of tap water.

On arrival on the airport our guide will be there waiting for you. During safari we use custom made safari vehicles, custom made for an optimal view of the wildlife. Safari vehicles (and small aircrafts) provide limited space for luggage. It is therefore recommended to travel with light bags since bulky suitcases will overload and might be difficult to be taken on board.

Visa - for those who require one - can be purchased in advance through the Tanzanian embassy or consulate in your home country. Visa can also be obtained upon arrival at Kilimanjaro / Dar es Salaam International Airport or at any overland border. The price for a single entry visa is USD 50 per person.

It is your own responsibility to arrange your visa(s) correctly and in time, but if anything is unclear of course we will be glad to assist you.

Note: This information is subject to change! Always consult the Tanzanian embassy in your country if you are not sure.

In most of the cities it is possible to withdraw money from an ATM. Travelers Cheques are not widely accepted and it is very difficult or impossible to pay by credit card outside the cities. The US dollar is traditionally the hard currency of preference. We advise to bring some Dollars for daily expenses and tips.

Dollar bills should not be older than 10 years.

The unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling. Please check the latest exchange rates before you go to your destination. This will be a guideline. Please note you will get a better exchange rate in the bigger cities.

Tanzania is a tropical country, with high temperatures along the coast and at lower altitudes (especially in the Southern Part). The Northern part is at higher altitudes (except for Lake Natron and Tarangire).

Areas around the Ngorongoro Crater, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Meru and Arusha are generally cooler.

Daytime temperatures are generally warm to hot, so bring lots of light clothing. Evenings are cooler, especially at higher altitudes, so carry a couple of light sweaters too.

Those who intend to do mountain hiking will be exposed to alpine temperatures and should pack accordingly.

Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses and a waterproof jacket. During safaris we advise to avoid black and dark blue clothes (because they can attract tsetse flies). For hiking and walking safaris Solid walking shoes and sturdy clothing are ideal for forest walks.

If you are planning on doing a community walk or visit the local people, we advise you to wear appropriate clothing. For example women putting on long skirts and a top that covers the shoulders.

To make the most of your visit to the game reserves and national parks, we advise you to carry binoculars and field guides.

Photographers will need a zoom lens for wildlife (70-300 or more). Please make sure to carry enough memory cards with you. Toiletries and other essentials can be bought in the cities.

A torch (flashlight) can proof to be very useful

We advise you to take an international adapter with you for your electric equipment. The system used in Tanzania is the British system. In most lodges it is possible to charge your batteries.

Please mind that washrooms along the road are sometimes not to European standards, for example squatting toilets, no flushing toilets or no toilet paper available. Like the locals say: T.I.A. This Is Africa.

Kazinga Channel Hippos - boat cruise safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park - Uganda

Discover the Hidden Gems of Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park on the Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise Safari

Nestled in the heart of Africa lies the breathtaking Kazinga Channel, a gentle river that runs 36 kilometers and connects lakes Edward and George. This stunning waterway bisects Queen Elizabeth National Park and is home to the highest concentration of hippos in the world. But the Kazinga Channel is much more than just a hippo haven; it’s a prime tourist attraction and the highlight of any wildlife safari in Uganda.

During a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, you will be immersed in a breathtaking wildlife experience, with an array of big and small creatures ranging from feathered to ferocious. The channel teems with African birds, visiting elephants, buffalo, lions, and the notorious Nile crocodiles. But the real stars of the show are the hippos, with about 2,000 of these adorable yet dangerous creatures living in more than 600 bloats on the channel. The best way to marvel at these water giants is by taking one of the scheduled launch safaris or boat cruises that bring you up close and personal with these magnificent creatures.

Apart from observing hippos, the Kazinga Channel boat cruise safari offers a great opportunity to witness over 100 diverse waterbird species that gather at the channel’s banks, making it a perfect bird-watching haven for bird lovers. You may encounter African skimmers, African shoebills, Malachite kingfishers, Pink-backed pelicans, Long-tailed cormorants, Yellow-billed storks, Fish eagles, African spoonbills, Pied kingfishers, Black crakes, Papyrus gonoleks, Martial eagles, and Black bee-eaters on your boat trip.

Kazinga Channel Features

The Kazinga Channel splits Queen Elizabeth National Park into two unequal chunks of game-viewing attractions. The larger south of the channel features the Ishasha sector, a wildlife-rich park sector known for its tree-climbing lions, and Kyambura Gorge, a valley of apes perfect for chimpanzee trekking and nature walks. On the other hand, the north of the channel is much smaller, featuring some of the country’s best wildlife-viewing game tracks, Kasenyi, Katunguru, Katwe, Mweya, Kikorongo, and the Kichwamba Escarpment.

Bridging both sides of the channel is a 50 km stretch of surfaced Kasese-Ishaka Road crossing the Kazinga Channel at Katunguru Bridge. Almost all safari camps and lodges serving the park’s northern sector lie alongside the Mbarara-Kasese, with other camps leading off the highway for up to 20 km (12.4 mi) inside. Tourists staying inside can drive to Kazinga Channel from any camp within one hour and join the daily scheduled launch trips.

Tourists Taking Photos on a Kazinga Channel boat cruise safari.

The Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

The boat trips on Kazinga Channel launch from the jetty below Mweya Safari Lodge, northeast of Lake Edward, and cruise 35 kilometers to Lake Gorge. As you cruise along the channel, you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of wildlife in the comfort of the boat.

You may spot hippo bloats, gentle giant elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, waterbuck, and even predators like leopards and lions lounging in the afternoon heat. Keep an eye out for giant monitor lizards and ferocious crocodiles lurking in the riverine shrub. Waterbirds like the yellow-billed stork, pink-backed pelicans, plovers, white-bellied cormorants, and pink-backed pelicans frequent the channel’s sandbanks.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Mweya Safari Lodge operate the 2-hour scheduled daily launch trips on Kazinga Channel.

UWA launch trip costs $30 per person and leaves at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 5:00 pm.

Mweya Safari Lodge’s launch trip is cheaper than UWA, more comfortable, and well-serviced. Mweya’s boat leaves at 11:00 am, 2:00 pm, and 4:15 pm, with special request trips available at 7:00 am and 9:00 am.

Best Time For Kazinga Boat Cruise

The best time for a boat cruise safari on the Kazinga channel is during the Dry Seasons of June to August and December to February. During these dry, hot days, the animals are pushed toward the channel waters, making it easier to spot elephants and predators. The afternoon between 1:00 and 5:00 pm is the best time to watch wildlife along the Kazinga Channel.

If you’re planning a family safari holiday in Uganda, make sure to add a boat cruise on Kazinga Channel to your itinerary. Your kids will love getting up close and personal with the wild animals, and you’ll create memories that will last a lifetime. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable adventure!

Directions: The Best Ways to Reach the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park

The best route to Kazinga Channel depends on your Uganda safari itinerary and choice of safari camp. For example, if you’re coming from seeing mountain gorillas in the southwestern highlands, you can drive through the Ishasha Sector of the park and join Mbarara-Kasese Road at Katunguru. Alternatively, you can pass via the smooth Kabale-Ntugamo-Ishaka road and join the Mbarara-Kasese road at Ishaka town.

Akshay Bhatia in contention, chasing first Masters berth and more heading into Sunday at Texas Children's Houston Open

Change Text Size

HOUSTON – At a venue open to anyone, it’s fitting that Sunday will be anyone’s game at the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

The leaderboard took the vibe of a festival Saturday at Memorial Park Golf Course, with increasingly firm conditions presenting a stout challenge for the jumbled field. A dozen players will enter Sunday’s final round within two strokes of the lead, with five players tied for the lead at 9-under, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and four yet to win on TOUR – David Skinns, Stephan Jaeger, Alejandro Tosti and Thomas Detry. Far from a Texas two-step, it’s a Lone Star quintet.

A trio of players at 8-under, one shot back, includes two players under age 23 (Akshay Bhatia and Nick Dunlap) and last year’s Valspar Championship winner Taylor Moore.

Tony Finau, who led by two after 36 holes, battled to a third-round 72 and will begin Sunday at 7-under, two off the lead, alongside Max Greyserman, Aaron Rai and Chad Ramey.

Sunday’s forecast calls for steady winds of 14-18 mph, with gusts that could approach 30 mph. Scheffler is understandably the heavy favorite odds-wise (+140), with Jaeger next at +650.

But if Saturday told us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. Case in point: The par-3 15th hole ranked as the third round’s most difficult, playing just 121 yards but averaging 3.398. The hole yielded three birdies and 25 over-par scores.

Theatrics could abound Sunday as well. Here are five things to know for the final round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open

1. Scheffler’s three-peat potential

Scottie Scheffler’s chase for a third TOUR title in as many starts has been this week’s central storyline at Memorial Park Golf Course. He has done nothing through 54 holes to suggest otherwise.

Scheffler, 27, rallied from a missed 2-foot bogey putt on his final hole Friday – resulting in an even-par 70 that snapped a TOUR modern-era record streak of 28 consecutive rounds under par – to post 4-under 66 on a difficult Saturday, matching the day’s fourth lowest score. He did so despite a double bogey at the par-3 15th, where his tee shot rolled into the water and he couldn’t get up and down. He rallied with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 after iron shots of which he was quite proud, relishing the support of his home-state fans.

“It’s a treat to be able to play out here for a living, it really is,” Scheffler said afterward. “I can't emphasize that enough, and to have the support of the fans out here, especially my home state, is really fun.

“I don't look up very much when I'm playing, I like to do my best to stay kind of in my own little world out there. Sometimes they can be a bit emotional when they're cheering for you really loud … I do my best to stay kind of in the moment and stay present, so I try not to look up too much, but I really do appreciate what they do out there. I really do hear the screams and it's fun to be playing in front of a nice crowd.”

2. Can someone earn a first Masters berth?

This week’s winner will earn an invitation to the Masters Tournament in two weeks, and several players in the mix could earn their first tee time at Augusta National Golf Club.

Four of the five co-leaders (Skinns, Jaeger, Tosti and Detry) have yet to compete in the Masters and are not yet qualified for 2024. None of the four are positioned to qualify via the world top 50 (as of April 1) without a win at Memorial Park, so it’s title-or-bust when it comes to a Masters invite.

Two of the three players a shot back – Dunlap and Moore – have already qualified for this year’s Masters, but Bhatia is chasing his first Masters berth at age 22, also needing a win.

Of the four players two back into Sunday, just one (Finau) is qualified for this year’s Masters. Three of the four (Max Greyserman, Aaron Rai and Chad Ramey) are seeking their first Masters invite, needing a win as well.

3. Dunlap chases more history

Dunlap, who won The American Express in January as an amateur and turned pro later that week, carded a third-round 63 at Memorial Park to vault 22 spots on the leaderboard. He shares sixth place into Sunday at 8-under, one back of the leading quintet.

Since Tiger Woods in 1996, only one player (Tom Kim) has won twice on TOUR before age 21. Dunlap is still nine months from his 21st birthday, but he’s playing like a seasoned pro. (It doesn’t hurt that his practice-round partners include the likes of Scheffler, with whom he shared a Tuesday game earlier this week.)

“It's still new and I still get lost and don't know where to register and don't know where dining is,” Dunlap said of his adjustment to TOUR life. Inside the ropes though, he has acclimated just fine.

4. How will Tosti fare after injury?

PGA TOUR rookie Alejandro Tosti , part of a five-way tie for the 54-hole lead, grinded out a third-round, 2-under 68 despite a troublesome neck/shoulder injury that he suffered overnight, saying afterward that the stress of being in contention perhaps contributed to the aggravation.

Tosti limited his warmup Saturday, hitting an estimated 50% of his normal pre-round shots, but he overcame a double bogey at the par-3 second hole to make five birdies against one bogey the rest of the way. Two weeks after Scheffler won THE PLAYERS amidst a neck injury, it’s another reminder to beware the injured golfer.

“I was not able to hit a fade because if I pull my hand or my shoulder up, it was hurting so I couldn't do it,” Tosti said afterward. “I was kind of coming inside, keeping my shoulder under my head and hitting draws all day.

“I found a way to fight the round and be able to finish under par after that bad start on the second hole. But I'm happy to have this opportunity for tomorrow.”

5. Will the 17th hole play drivable?

Memorial Park’s par-4 17th hole was renovated prior to this year’s event, with the green complex pushed 30 yards back from the water’s edge to allow for a greater risk-reward proposition from the forward tee.

To this point in the tournament, the back tee has been used – the hole has played to 417, 391 and 398 yards respectively across the first three rounds (it measures 405 yards on the scorecard, compared to 382 yards previously). Players are now forced to either hit a longer club off the tee (bringing the water right of the fairway more into play) to have a wedge into the green, or to lay back off the tee and face a longer iron into the green.

No. 17 has played as the fifth most difficult hole this week (4.173), after ranking as the 13th most difficult for last season’s Texas Children’s Houston Open (played in fall 2022).

Tom Doak, who renovated Memorial Park in 2019, also renovated No. 17 before this year’s event, with the intent of forcing contenders to make a tough decision come Sunday. Playing from a forward tee, the hole could measure around 310 yards. This could be the case Sunday – keep an eye out.
