Fact sheet: 2022 national travel and tourism strategy, office of public affairs.

The 2022 National Travel and Tourism Strategy was released on June 6, 2022, by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo on behalf of the Tourism Policy Council (TPC). The new strategy focuses the full efforts of the federal government to promote the United States as a premier destination grounded in the breadth and diversity of our communities, and to foster a sector that drives economic growth, creates good jobs, and bolsters conservation and sustainability. Drawing on engagement and capabilities from across the federal government, the strategy aims to support broad-based economic growth in travel and tourism across the United States, its territories, and the District of Columbia.

Key points of the 2022 National Travel and Tourism Strategy

The federal government will work to implement the strategy under the leadership of the TPC and in partnership with the private sector, aiming toward an ambitious five-year goal of increasing American jobs by attracting and welcoming 90 million international visitors, who we estimate will spend $279 billion, annually by 2027.

The new National Travel and Tourism Strategy supports growth and competitiveness for an industry that, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, generated $1.9 trillion in economic output and supported 9.5 million American jobs. Also, in 2019, nearly 80 million international travelers visited the United States and contributed nearly $240 billion to the U.S. economy, making the United States the global leader in revenue from international travel and tourism. As the top services export for the United States that year, travel and tourism generated a $53.4 billion trade surplus and supported 1 million jobs in the United States.

The strategy follows a four-point approach:

  • Promoting the United States as a Travel Destination Goal : Leverage existing programs and assets to promote the United States to international visitors and broaden marketing efforts to encourage visitation to underserved communities.
  • Facilitating Travel to and Within the United States Goal : Reduce barriers to trade in travel services and make it safer and more efficient for visitors to enter and travel within the United States.
  • Ensuring Diverse, Inclusive, and Accessible Tourism Experiences Goal : Extend the benefits of travel and tourism by supporting the development of diverse tourism products, focusing on under-served communities and populations. Address the financial and workplace needs of travel and tourism businesses, supporting destination communities as they grow their tourism economies. Deliver world-class experiences and customer service at federal lands and waters that showcase the nation’s assets while protecting them for future generations.
  • Fostering Resilient and Sustainable Travel and Tourism Goal : Reduce travel and tourism’s contributions to climate change and build a travel and tourism sector that is resilient to natural disasters, public health threats, and the impacts of climate change. Build a sustainable sector that integrates protecting natural resources, supporting the tourism economy, and ensuring equitable development.

Travel and Tourism Fast Facts

  • The travel and tourism industry supported 9.5 million American jobs through $1.9 trillion of economic activity in 2019. In fact, 1 in every 20 jobs in the United States was either directly or indirectly supported by travel and tourism. These jobs can be found in industries like lodging, food services, arts, entertainment, recreation, transportation, and education.
  • Travel and tourism was the top services export for the United States in 2019, generating a $53.4 billion trade surplus.
  • The travel and tourism industry was one of the U.S. business sectors hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent health and travel restrictions, with travel exports decreasing nearly 65% from 2019 to 2020.
  • The decline in travel and tourism contributed heavily to unemployment; leisure and hospitality lost 8.2 million jobs between February and April 2020 alone, accounting for 37% of the decline in overall nonfarm employment during that time.
  • By 2021, the rollout of vaccines and lifting of international and domestic restrictions allowed travel and tourism to begin its recovery. International arrivals to the United States grew to 22.1 million in 2021, up from 19.2 million in 2020. Spending by international visitors also grew, reaching $81.0 billion, or 34 percent of 2019’s total.

More about the Tourism Policy Council and the 2022 National Travel and Tourism Strategy

Created by Congress and chaired by Secretary Raimondo, the Tourism Policy Council (TPC) is the interagency council charged with coordinating national policies and programs relating to travel and tourism. At the direction of Secretary Raimondo, the TPC created a new five-year strategy to focus U.S. government efforts in support of the travel and tourism sector which has been deeply and disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The future of tourism: Bridging the labor gap, enhancing customer experience

As travel resumes and builds momentum, it’s becoming clear that tourism is resilient—there is an enduring desire to travel. Against all odds, international tourism rebounded in 2022: visitor numbers to Europe and the Middle East climbed to around 80 percent of 2019 levels, and the Americas recovered about 65 percent of prepandemic visitors 1 “Tourism set to return to pre-pandemic levels in some regions in 2023,” United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), January 17, 2023. —a number made more significant because it was reached without travelers from China, which had the world’s largest outbound travel market before the pandemic. 2 “ Outlook for China tourism 2023: Light at the end of the tunnel ,” McKinsey, May 9, 2023.

Recovery and growth are likely to continue. According to estimates from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for 2023, international tourist arrivals could reach 80 to 95 percent of prepandemic levels depending on the extent of the economic slowdown, travel recovery in Asia–Pacific, and geopolitical tensions, among other factors. 3 “Tourism set to return to pre-pandemic levels in some regions in 2023,” United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), January 17, 2023. Similarly, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts that by the end of 2023, nearly half of the 185 countries in which the organization conducts research will have either recovered to prepandemic levels or be within 95 percent of full recovery. 4 “Global travel and tourism catapults into 2023 says WTTC,” World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), April 26, 2023.

Longer-term forecasts also point to optimism for the decade ahead. Travel and tourism GDP is predicted to grow, on average, at 5.8 percent a year between 2022 and 2032, outpacing the growth of the overall economy at an expected 2.7 percent a year. 5 Travel & Tourism economic impact 2022 , WTTC, August 2022.

So, is it all systems go for travel and tourism? Not really. The industry continues to face a prolonged and widespread labor shortage. After losing 62 million travel and tourism jobs in 2020, labor supply and demand remain out of balance. 6 “WTTC research reveals Travel & Tourism’s slow recovery is hitting jobs and growth worldwide,” World Travel & Tourism Council, October 6, 2021. Today, in the European Union, 11 percent of tourism jobs are likely to go unfilled; in the United States, that figure is 7 percent. 7 Travel & Tourism economic impact 2022 : Staff shortages, WTTC, August 2022.

There has been an exodus of tourism staff, particularly from customer-facing roles, to other sectors, and there is no sign that the industry will be able to bring all these people back. 8 Travel & Tourism economic impact 2022 : Staff shortages, WTTC, August 2022. Hotels, restaurants, cruises, airports, and airlines face staff shortages that can translate into operational, reputational, and financial difficulties. If unaddressed, these shortages may constrain the industry’s growth trajectory.

The current labor shortage may have its roots in factors related to the nature of work in the industry. Chronic workplace challenges, coupled with the effects of COVID-19, have culminated in an industry struggling to rebuild its workforce. Generally, tourism-related jobs are largely informal, partly due to high seasonality and weak regulation. And conditions such as excessively long working hours, low wages, a high turnover rate, and a lack of social protection tend to be most pronounced in an informal economy. Additionally, shift work, night work, and temporary or part-time employment are common in tourism.

The industry may need to revisit some fundamentals to build a far more sustainable future: either make the industry more attractive to talent (and put conditions in place to retain staff for longer periods) or improve products, services, and processes so that they complement existing staffing needs or solve existing pain points.

One solution could be to build a workforce with the mix of digital and interpersonal skills needed to keep up with travelers’ fast-changing requirements. The industry could make the most of available technology to provide customers with a digitally enhanced experience, resolve staff shortages, and improve working conditions.

The pace of technological change has redefined customer expectations. Technology-driven services are often at customers’ fingertips, with no queues or waiting times. By contrast, the airport and airline disruption widely reported in the press over the summer of 2022 points to customers not receiving this same level of digital innovation when traveling.

Imagine the following travel experience: it’s 2035 and you start your long-awaited honeymoon to a tropical island. A virtual tour operator and a destination travel specialist booked your trip for you; you connected via videoconference to make your plans. Your itinerary was chosen with the support of generative AI , which analyzed your preferences, recommended personalized travel packages, and made real-time adjustments based on your feedback.

Before leaving home, you check in online and QR code your luggage. You travel to the airport by self-driving cab. After dropping off your luggage at the self-service counter, you pass through security and the biometric check. You access the premier lounge with the QR code on the airline’s loyalty card and help yourself to a glass of wine and a sandwich. After your flight, a prebooked, self-driving cab takes you to the resort. No need to check in—that was completed online ahead of time (including picking your room and making sure that the hotel’s virtual concierge arranged for red roses and a bottle of champagne to be delivered).

While your luggage is brought to the room by a baggage robot, your personal digital concierge presents the honeymoon itinerary with all the requested bookings. For the romantic dinner on the first night, you order your food via the restaurant app on the table and settle the bill likewise. So far, you’ve had very little human interaction. But at dinner, the sommelier chats with you in person about the wine. The next day, your sightseeing is made easier by the hotel app and digital guide—and you don’t get lost! With the aid of holographic technology, the virtual tour guide brings historical figures to life and takes your sightseeing experience to a whole new level. Then, as arranged, a local citizen meets you and takes you to their home to enjoy a local family dinner. The trip is seamless, there are no holdups or snags.

This scenario features less human interaction than a traditional trip—but it flows smoothly due to the underlying technology. The human interactions that do take place are authentic, meaningful, and add a special touch to the experience. This may be a far-fetched example, but the essence of the scenario is clear: use technology to ease typical travel pain points such as queues, misunderstandings, or misinformation, and elevate the quality of human interaction.

Travel with less human interaction may be considered a disruptive idea, as many travelers rely on and enjoy the human connection, the “service with a smile.” This will always be the case, but perhaps the time is right to think about bringing a digital experience into the mix. The industry may not need to depend exclusively on human beings to serve its customers. Perhaps the future of travel is physical, but digitally enhanced (and with a smile!).

Digital solutions are on the rise and can help bridge the labor gap

Digital innovation is improving customer experience across multiple industries. Car-sharing apps have overcome service-counter waiting times and endless paperwork that travelers traditionally had to cope with when renting a car. The same applies to time-consuming hotel check-in, check-out, and payment processes that can annoy weary customers. These pain points can be removed. For instance, in China, the Huazhu Hotels Group installed self-check-in kiosks that enable guests to check in or out in under 30 seconds. 9 “Huazhu Group targets lifestyle market opportunities,” ChinaTravelNews, May 27, 2021.

Technology meets hospitality

In 2019, Alibaba opened its FlyZoo Hotel in Huangzhou, described as a “290-room ultra-modern boutique, where technology meets hospitality.” 1 “Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has a hotel run almost entirely by robots that can serve food and fetch toiletries—take a look inside,” Business Insider, October 21, 2019; “FlyZoo Hotel: The hotel of the future or just more technology hype?,” Hotel Technology News, March 2019. The hotel was the first of its kind that instead of relying on traditional check-in and key card processes, allowed guests to manage reservations and make payments entirely from a mobile app, to check-in using self-service kiosks, and enter their rooms using facial-recognition technology.

The hotel is run almost entirely by robots that serve food and fetch toiletries and other sundries as needed. Each guest room has a voice-activated smart assistant to help guests with a variety of tasks, from adjusting the temperature, lights, curtains, and the TV to playing music and answering simple questions about the hotel and surroundings.

The hotel was developed by the company’s online travel platform, Fliggy, in tandem with Alibaba’s AI Labs and Alibaba Cloud technology with the goal of “leveraging cutting-edge tech to help transform the hospitality industry, one that keeps the sector current with the digital era we’re living in,” according to the company.

Adoption of some digitally enhanced services was accelerated during the pandemic in the quest for safer, contactless solutions. During the Winter Olympics in Beijing, a restaurant designed to keep physical contact to a minimum used a track system on the ceiling to deliver meals directly from the kitchen to the table. 10 “This Beijing Winter Games restaurant uses ceiling-based tracks,” Trendhunter, January 26, 2022. Customers around the world have become familiar with restaurants using apps to display menus, take orders, and accept payment, as well as hotels using robots to deliver luggage and room service (see sidebar “Technology meets hospitality”). Similarly, theme parks, cinemas, stadiums, and concert halls are deploying digital solutions such as facial recognition to optimize entrance control. Shanghai Disneyland, for example, offers annual pass holders the option to choose facial recognition to facilitate park entry. 11 “Facial recognition park entry,” Shanghai Disney Resort website.

Automation and digitization can also free up staff from attending to repetitive functions that could be handled more efficiently via an app and instead reserve the human touch for roles where staff can add the most value. For instance, technology can help customer-facing staff to provide a more personalized service. By accessing data analytics, frontline staff can have guests’ details and preferences at their fingertips. A trainee can become an experienced concierge in a short time, with the help of technology.

Apps and in-room tech: Unused market potential

According to Skift Research calculations, total revenue generated by guest apps and in-room technology in 2019 was approximately $293 million, including proprietary apps by hotel brands as well as third-party vendors. 1 “Hotel tech benchmark: Guest-facing technology 2022,” Skift Research, November 2022. The relatively low market penetration rate of this kind of tech points to around $2.4 billion in untapped revenue potential (exhibit).

Even though guest-facing technology is available—the kind that can facilitate contactless interactions and offer travelers convenience and personalized service—the industry is only beginning to explore its potential. A report by Skift Research shows that the hotel industry, in particular, has not tapped into tech’s potential. Only 11 percent of hotels and 25 percent of hotel rooms worldwide are supported by a hotel app or use in-room technology, and only 3 percent of hotels offer keyless entry. 12 “Hotel tech benchmark: Guest-facing technology 2022,” Skift Research, November 2022. Of the five types of technology examined (guest apps and in-room tech; virtual concierge; guest messaging and chatbots; digital check-in and kiosks; and keyless entry), all have relatively low market-penetration rates (see sidebar “Apps and in-room tech: Unused market potential”).

While apps, digitization, and new technology may be the answer to offering better customer experience, there is also the possibility that tourism may face competition from technological advances, particularly virtual experiences. Museums, attractions, and historical sites can be made interactive and, in some cases, more lifelike, through AR/VR technology that can enhance the physical travel experience by reconstructing historical places or events.

Up until now, tourism, arguably, was one of a few sectors that could not easily be replaced by tech. It was not possible to replicate the physical experience of traveling to another place. With the emerging metaverse , this might change. Travelers could potentially enjoy an event or experience from their sofa without any logistical snags, and without the commitment to traveling to another country for any length of time. For example, Google offers virtual tours of the Pyramids of Meroë in Sudan via an immersive online experience available in a range of languages. 13 Mariam Khaled Dabboussi, “Step into the Meroë pyramids with Google,” Google, May 17, 2022. And a crypto banking group, The BCB Group, has created a metaverse city that includes representations of some of the most visited destinations in the world, such as the Great Wall of China and the Statue of Liberty. According to BCB, the total cost of flights, transfers, and entry for all these landmarks would come to $7,600—while a virtual trip would cost just over $2. 14 “What impact can the Metaverse have on the travel industry?,” Middle East Economy, July 29, 2022.

The metaverse holds potential for business travel, too—the meeting, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector in particular. Participants could take part in activities in the same immersive space while connecting from anywhere, dramatically reducing travel, venue, catering, and other costs. 15 “ Tourism in the metaverse: Can travel go virtual? ,” McKinsey, May 4, 2023.

The allure and convenience of such digital experiences make offering seamless, customer-centric travel and tourism in the real world all the more pressing.

Three innovations to solve hotel staffing shortages

Is the future contactless.

Given the advances in technology, and the many digital innovations and applications that already exist, there is potential for businesses across the travel and tourism spectrum to cope with labor shortages while improving customer experience. Process automation and digitization can also add to process efficiency. Taken together, a combination of outsourcing, remote work, and digital solutions can help to retain existing staff and reduce dependency on roles that employers are struggling to fill (exhibit).

Depending on the customer service approach and direct contact need, we estimate that the travel and tourism industry would be able to cope with a structural labor shortage of around 10 to 15 percent in the long run by operating more flexibly and increasing digital and automated efficiency—while offering the remaining staff an improved total work package.

Outsourcing and remote work could also help resolve the labor shortage

While COVID-19 pushed organizations in a wide variety of sectors to embrace remote work, there are many hospitality roles that rely on direct physical services that cannot be performed remotely, such as laundry, cleaning, maintenance, and facility management. If faced with staff shortages, these roles could be outsourced to third-party professional service providers, and existing staff could be reskilled to take up new positions.

In McKinsey’s experience, the total service cost of this type of work in a typical hotel can make up 10 percent of total operating costs. Most often, these roles are not guest facing. A professional and digital-based solution might become an integrated part of a third-party service for hotels looking to outsource this type of work.

One of the lessons learned in the aftermath of COVID-19 is that many tourism employees moved to similar positions in other sectors because they were disillusioned by working conditions in the industry . Specialist multisector companies have been able to shuffle their staff away from tourism to other sectors that offer steady employment or more regular working hours compared with the long hours and seasonal nature of work in tourism.

The remaining travel and tourism staff may be looking for more flexibility or the option to work from home. This can be an effective solution for retaining employees. For example, a travel agent with specific destination expertise could work from home or be consulted on an needs basis.

In instances where remote work or outsourcing is not viable, there are other solutions that the hospitality industry can explore to improve operational effectiveness as well as employee satisfaction. A more agile staffing model  can better match available labor with peaks and troughs in daily, or even hourly, demand. This could involve combining similar roles or cross-training staff so that they can switch roles. Redesigned roles could potentially improve employee satisfaction by empowering staff to explore new career paths within the hotel’s operations. Combined roles build skills across disciplines—for example, supporting a housekeeper to train and become proficient in other maintenance areas, or a front-desk associate to build managerial skills.

Where management or ownership is shared across properties, roles could be staffed to cover a network of sites, rather than individual hotels. By applying a combination of these approaches, hotels could reduce the number of staff hours needed to keep operations running at the same standard. 16 “ Three innovations to solve hotel staffing shortages ,” McKinsey, April 3, 2023.

Taken together, operational adjustments combined with greater use of technology could provide the tourism industry with a way of overcoming staffing challenges and giving customers the seamless digitally enhanced experiences they expect in other aspects of daily life.

In an industry facing a labor shortage, there are opportunities for tech innovations that can help travel and tourism businesses do more with less, while ensuring that remaining staff are engaged and motivated to stay in the industry. For travelers, this could mean fewer friendly faces, but more meaningful experiences and interactions.

Doubling of ‘Tourism for All’ 2022 program

Doubling of ‘Tourism for All’ 2022 program

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the doubling of both the funding and of the beneficiaries for the “Tourism for All” 2022 state subsidize holiday program.

Speaking in the northwestern city of Preveza on Friday, Mtsotakis said that “every time I talk about tourism, I fully empathize with our fellow citizens who have difficulty being able to spend even a few days on vacation.”

The premier went on to announce the addition of another 30 million euros to the program’s budget, equivalent to another 200,000 Greek beneficiaries.

This program provides a €150 coupon which is used at hotels and other accommodation facilities nationwide.

The coupon’s value is €200 for people with a disability rate of more than 67% and whose mobility is thus affected. The coupon is valid through July 2023.

The opposition SYRIZA part dismissed the prime minister’s announcement of the doubling of beneficiaries in the ‘Tourism for All’ 2022 program as “a double deception of citizens.”

Greece Doubles ‘Tourism for All’ Subsidized Vacation Vouchers

tourism for all 2022

Twice as many Greeks are eligible this year for subsidized holidays under the government’s “ Tourism for All” program , said the tourism ministry, announcing that an additional 200,000 people will be able to get the benefit.

The annual program, which covers a portion of the cost of vacation for lower-income Greeks, has been updated and after the decision of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, an extra 30 million euros will be allocated to the plan in addition to the initial budget of 31 million euros. Now, with a new budget of 61 million euros the plan will subsidize the holidays of some 400,000 Greeks in total in 2022.

The “Tourism for All” program covers the cost of accommodation, transport and food through digital vouchers issued by vouchers.gov.gr.

Those entitled under the program will be able to redeem their vouchers from mid-September onward through to June 2023. The deadline for applications was July 21. The first round of vouchers will be issued by lottery drawing next week , the ministry said.

The new upgraded support scheme offers a total subsidy of 150 euros for accommodation costs and payments are made digitally. At the same time, business owners are compensated immediately.

Under the same program, people with disabilities are entitled to 200 euros .

“Beneficiaries of the 2022 program have now increased to 400,000 as part of ongoing efforts  to support the average Greek family, professionals and workers in the tourism industry. In this way, at the same time, we are strengthening our effort to extend the tourist season, stimulate winter and city break tourism and ensure activity all year round,” said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias .

The minister underlined that it is a ministry and government priority to distribute the returns to Greek society.

“For the first time, we have such a broad network of support to strengthen domestic tourism so that even our most vulnerable citizens can enjoy the beauties of our country and take the breath they all deserve,” he said.

Meanwhile, in relevant news, the second phase of the so-called “North Evia – Samos Pass” , which covers, through the use of a debit card, accommodation, food and transport costs for some 32,000 beneficiaries goes into effect from today through to August 31.

The 6-million-euro program, in its second phase, is aimed at stimulating tourist activity by serving as an incentive to visit Northern Evia, which suffered devastating damage and loss due to forest fires last year , and Samos, which has been dealing with the refugee influx over the last few years.

Tourism for All 2022: Making Travel Accessible to Everyone

World tourism day 2022: why is this year’s theme ‘rethinking tourism’.

Rethinking Tourism

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the tourism industry, causing disruptions and setbacks worldwide. The theme of ‘rethinking tourism’ serves as a reminder that the sector must adapt, evolve, and reimagine itself to overcome the challenges and build a more resilient future.

Making Tourism Stronger and Ready for the Future

Making Tourism Stronger and Ready for the Future

One of the key aspects of rethinking tourism is embracing digital technologies and promoting digitalization across various aspects of the industry. From online booking platforms to virtual tours, technology has played a crucial role in transforming the way we travel and experience destinations. Digitalization not only enhances convenience but also provides opportunities for better monitoring, management, and promotion of tourist destinations.

Rethinking tourism also involves adopting sustainable practices to minimize the negative impacts of tourism on the environment. As more people travel and explore the world, it becomes imperative to ensure that these activities are carried out in a responsible and sustainable manner. This includes promoting eco-friendly accommodations, supporting local businesses, and reducing carbon emissions through measures such as sustainable transportation and waste management.

TheSocialTalks – World Tourism Day 2021: ‘Travel, to Explore, to Know’

Travel, to Explore, to Know

Travel has always been an integral part of human history. It has played a vital role in shaping societies, promoting cross-cultural interactions, and boosting economies. However, the COVID-19 pandemic severely restricted travel and brought the tourism industry to a standstill. It has highlighted the importance of travel not only for leisure and recreation but also for economic growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation.

As the world gradually recovers from the pandemic, it is crucial to embrace the lessons learned and create a more resilient and sustainable tourism industry. This includes promoting responsible travel practices, supporting local communities, and safeguarding natural and cultural heritage. It also involves recognizing the diverse needs of travelers and ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities.

Accessible Tourism: Making Travel Available to All

Accessible Tourism

Traditionally, many popular tourist destinations have been inaccessible to individuals with disabilities due to a lack of infrastructure and inclusive policies. However, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of accessible tourism and efforts to make travel more inclusive and welcoming for people with disabilities. This involves ensuring accessible transportation, accommodations, attractions, and information, as well as training staff to provide appropriate assistance and support.

Accessible tourism not only benefits individuals with disabilities but also contributes to the overall sustainability and resilience of the tourism industry. By removing barriers and promoting inclusivity, destinations can attract a broader range of tourists and tap into a previously untapped market segment. This not only benefits the economy but also fosters a more inclusive and diverse society.

Travel Trends in 2022 and Beyond

Travel Trends in 2022

1. Sustainable and eco-friendly travel: There is an increasing focus on sustainable travel practices and eco-friendly destinations. Travelers are seeking out destinations that prioritize environmental conservation, promote responsible tourism, and offer unique experiences that connect them with nature.

2. Off-the-beaten-path destinations: Travelers are becoming more adventurous and seeking out lesser-known destinations that offer authentic cultural experiences and unique attractions. They are interested in exploring hidden gems and stepping away from overcrowded tourist hotspots.

3. Health and wellness tourism: The pandemic has highlighted the importance of maintaining good health and well-being. As a result, there is a rising trend of health and wellness tourism, with travelers looking for destinations that offer rejuvenating experiences, spa retreats, and holistic wellness activities.

4. Digital nomadism: The pandemic has accelerated remote work trends, leading to the rise of digital nomadism. Many individuals are opting to work remotely while traveling, creating a new segment of travelers who seek destinations with reliable internet connectivity and co-working spaces.

5. Cultural immersion: Travelers are increasingly interested in immersing themselves in the local culture, traditions, and lifestyles of the destinations they visit. They seek authentic experiences that allow them to connect with the local community, learn about their history and traditions, and participate in cultural activities.

6. Responsible and ethical wildlife tourism: There is a growing awareness and concern for the welfare of animals in tourism. Travelers are seeking ethical wildlife experiences that prioritize animal welfare, conservation, and education. They are avoiding attractions that exploit animals for entertainment purposes.

7. Slow travel: Travelers are embracing the concept of slow travel, which encourages them to take their time and fully immerse themselves in the destinations they visit. Slow travel focuses on quality over quantity, emphasizing meaningful experiences, connections with locals, and sustainable travel practices.

As World Tourism Day approaches, it serves as a reminder of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the tourism industry. The theme of ‘rethinking tourism’ underscores the need for innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. By embracing digitalization, promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring accessibility for all, the tourism industry can rebuild and create a more resilient and responsible future.

Travel trends in 2022 and beyond reflect changing consumer preferences and a greater emphasis on sustainability, off-the-beaten-path destinations, health and wellness, cultural immersion, ethical wildlife tourism, digital nomadism, and slow travel. These trends reflect a shift towards more meaningful and authentic travel experiences that contribute to the well-being of individuals, communities, and the environment.

As we celebrate World Tourism Day, let us pause and reflect on the importance of tourism in our lives. It has the power to inspire, educate, and connect people from different cultures and backgrounds. By rethinking tourism and adopting sustainable and inclusive practices, we can ensure that future generations can enjoy the wonders of travel while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of our shared planet.

These are the 10 best travel destinations for a 'digital detox'—none of them are in the U.S.

thumbnail

More and more people are looking for a reprieve from the endless scroll of social media, breaking news alerts and e-mail notifications. On this quest to be a little less online, a detox might be necessary .

There's a recent rise in Gen Zers in the U.S. buying "dumb phones" to help limit the time they spend on apps like Twitter and TikTok. And as people set stricter boundaries around how much they interact with tech, they're turning their attention to travel.

InsureMyTrip , a travel insurance comparison website, ranked the best cities to visit for a "digital detox" based on an overall rating across four categories: relaxation, activities, safety, and access to the internet.

The ranking used data from several sources, including Google Maps, TomTom, Viator, and more, to score the cities on a scale from 1 to 10.

The cities were scored based on the following criteria:

  • Average travel time
  • Population density
  • Spa ratings
  • Overall relaxation
  • Park ratings
  • Percentage of residents near car-free zones (walkability)
  • Number of evening tours/activities
  • Safety score
  • Lack of Internet access

Ranking the cities based on these categories can help travelers prioritize unplugging from their phones and focusing on their trip. For example, "one of the most common times to go on any device is when winding down in the evening," the report states.

To stick to your digital detox, look to one of the featured destinations that received high marks for availability of evening tours and activities.

No. 1 best destination for a digital detox: Prague, Czech Republic

Prague, Czech Republic, ranked as the best city for a digital detox with an overall score of 7.96. In Prague 82%, of residents live near car-free zones, which speaks to the walkability and ease of travel in the city.

Prague is the Czech Republic's capital and the country's largest city. In 1992, the city's historic center was added to the UNESCO list of  World Heritage Sites .

Prague is known as the "city of a hundred spires" thanks to the many church towers throughout, according to Britannica . The city is also home to Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe.

10 best travel destinations for a digital detox

  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Rome, Italy
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Marrakech, Morocco
  • Madrid, Spain
  • Stockholm, Sweden

Rome came in second on the list. It had an overall score of 7.65 and scored highest amongst the categories for parks, the number of tours. Fully 52% of residents live near a car-free zone.

Italy's capital is home to several iconic destinations like the Spanish Steps, Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

Located within Rome's city boundaries is the smallest country in the world, Vatican City, which is the center of the Catholic Church and home to the Pope.

Rome was one of the most visited destinations last year, according to a 2022 ranking of the top 100 city destinations .

In a close third is Amsterdam. The city had an overall score of 7.6 and ranked highly in the spa ratings and overall relaxation categories.

More than two-thirds of residents in Amsterdam live near a car-free zone, making it the eighth best in that category. Amsterdam is also one of the most bike-friendly cities.

Amsterdam, known as "the Venice of the North," is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its iconic canal district.

In 2022, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Amsterdam as one of the most livable cities in the world.

Who Is Joey King's Husband? All About Steven Piet

Joey King and Steven Piet met while filming The Act and wed in 2023

Contributor, PEOPLE

Viewers have watched Joey King 's character Elle Evans fall in love in Netflix's The Kissing Booth , but in real life, the actress' romantic life is much more private.

King met her now-husband, Steven Piet , on the set of Hulu's 2019 drama series The Act . The director, producer and writer directed two episodes of the show and told Vanity Fair of the experience. "As a director, you feel like you're the emotional litmus test for the show. And when it works so well, it's just so exciting to be there at that moment," Piet said. King's performance as Gypsy Rose Blanchard garnered her nominations at the Emmy , SAG and Golden Globe Awards .

The pair made their red carpet debut as a couple at an Emmy party in September 2019, and in 2022, Piet proposed to the actress. They eventually wed on Sept. 2, 2023 , in Spain after their legal ceremony in Los Angeles, a source confirmed to PEOPLE.

Here's everything to know about Joey King's husband, Steven Piet.

He's a director and producer

Piet has directed episodes of Channel Zero , Briarpatch and The Act , which starred King as Gypsy Rose Blanchard . He also co-wrote and directed the 2015 indie movie Uncle John and was a co-executive producer of both The Act and Briarpatch .

In a 2019 interview with Vanity Fair , Piet said of The Act 's final episode, "I felt like my job was to step back as much as I could and just have the camera in the right place and let these amazing actors do what they do best … At times, I was so lost in their performances that I was forgetting to say, 'Cut.' "

Piet also directed episodes of Peacock's A Friend of the Family . In October 2022, he posted about the show on Instagram , sharing stills from the miniseries. In the caption, he thanked the cast, crew and Jan Broberg, whose true story inspired the series . "The moment I read the script for the first episode written by @nickantosca, I knew I wanted to contribute to this special project - I'm so grateful that I was invited to be a part of it," he wrote.

He's from Chicago

He was born in Chicago and studied film at the Savannah College of Art and Design . After college, Piet went back to his home city to work in the production industry before heading to Hollywood.

He and King were first spotted together at a Harry Potter screening

King's romance with Piet was first reported by E! News in September 2019 after the pair were photographed at Cinespia's screening of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery . The couple attended the event with King's sisters, Hunter and Kelli , and their dates.

He's close with King's family

As well as attending a Harry Potter screening with King's sisters, Piet has spent time with other members of the star's family. To celebrate Christmas 2020, King shared several photos on Instagram, which included her mom, her sister Hunter and Piet.

The director also took part in a Zoom call for Kelli's birthday with other King family members, as shared by Hunter . Plus, he's appeared in several photos shared by King's grandmother on Instagram.

He proposed to King in February 2022

King announced her engagement to Piet in an Instagram post. "I never knew happiness could be so powerful that it can take the air from your lungs, overwhelming every part of you that you can't help but feel your eyes well from the undeniable joy," she wrote. "The date was 2/2/22 when you asked me to marry you and made me the luckiest lady alive. I love you more than an Instagram caption could ever do justice. Hanging out with you forever sounds like a real dream, so let's do it."

In his own post, Piet wrote , "The weather was less than perfect. Cold. Windy. Perfectly imperfect to ask my best friend to spend a lifetime together. A lifetime of incredibly safe and vulnerable conversations. Holding hands on silent cab rides home, exhausted from great food and red wine. And oh, the laughter. The uncontrollable laughter. You've unlocked a dimension of love in me that I never knew existed."

Joey King/Instagram

In July 2023, King shared a video on social media from her bachelorette party , during which she and her friends dressed up as different ‘Famous Steves.’

“Bachelorette theme. Show us your best Steven,” King wrote over the video, which featured the actresses' friends dressed as Apple inventor Steve Jobs , Steven Tyler , Steve from  Blues Clues, Steve Irwin and others. Meanwhile, King dressed as her fiancé in glasses and suspenders.

He and King got married in Spain

The couple tied the knot in Mallorca, Spain, on Sept. 2, 2023, in front of roughly 100 guests. King wore an Oscar de la Renta gown, while Piet donned a suit by Italian designer Brunello Cucinelli.

For their first dance, the bride and groom performed a choreographed number to Cat Power’s rendition of “Sea of Love.”

"I have never danced harder in my life than at my wedding," King told Elite Daily in December 2023. "My husband and I got so hot, so sweaty. You know that heat where you can start to feel your heartbeat in your face? I was that hot.”

So, they decided to jump in the pool — clothes and all.

“It was the most fun because so many people joined us in their fancy dresses," the actress shared. "It was the most romantic moment to me. It was so spontaneous, and it felt like such a movie, honestly. I loved the camaraderie of it all.”

Talking to PEOPLE in March 2024, King called her wedding " the best weekend of my whole life ." It was raining on their big day, and just when she and Piet decided to "lean into it," something unexpected happened.

“Guests arrive for the ceremony, the sun starts shining. I was like, ‘This is insane. Do I believe in God?’ I'm just kidding, but it was better than we ever could have dreamed," she said.

Prior to their destination wedding, King and Piet got legally married in the United States on Aug. 19, 2023. They " hit up a place called Same Day Marriage " in Los Angeles and went bowling with friends and family after.

He is regularly featured on King's Instagram

Since going public with their relationship, King has posted photos of Piet on her Instagram on a regular basis.

In August 2022, King posted a playful video of her and Piet painting with friends. "Highly recommend going spatter painting with your favorite people," King wrote over a video of their group dressed in ponchos painting on canvases.

Just before Christmas 2022, King, who is often off filming for extended periods of time, surprised Piet after a month apart. The Bullet Train actress then shared his reaction photos on Instagram .

"I surprised Steven after a month apart, and idk man, these photos make my eyes wet," King captioned the images. She later shared a few snaps from their Hanukkah/Christmas festivities.

King and Piet celebrated their third anniversary in February 2023. The actress posted a video montage of her and Piet on TikTok and Instagram featuring various photos and videos of the pair spending time together.

A few months later, King paid tribute to her future husband on Instagram in honor of his 32nd birthday.

"To the man who, when I lay my eyes on him, makes my breath catch from how lucky I feel that he’s mine. How does one describe a person like you? I don’t fully know. What I do know is that the world became a better place the day you were born," she wrote. "Happy birthday Stevie P. Your love is my happy place."

Joey King Instagram

Piet was also featured on King's July 2023 Instagram tribute to her longtime friend Taylor Swift . The post featured footage of King joining Swift onstage during the singer's Eras Tour stop in Kansas City as well as a cute video of King and Piet sharing a kiss in the stadium.

He and King often travel together

Piet and King have taken more than one road trip together. In March 2021, King shared photos taken on a road trip and wrote, "We went on a road trip and GOLLY WE HAD FUN!"

A few months later, King shared some photo booth snaps taken with Piet and wrote, "Professional road trippers/professional smoochers." The next year, Piet shared a photo of the Slender Man star in Paris.

He and King enjoy working together

In a cover interview for Allure 's July 2022 issue , King opened up about working with her now-fiancé on The Act . "We work really well together," she shared. "We also just really love spending time together. So getting to do something where we're both doing what we love and we get to hang out with each other, [that's] the best. I think he's so talented. He thinks the same about me. We really love just being able to put our minds together."

DOT seeks seat in protected areas board for tourism dev’t

Following the recent controversy over the development of a resort at the foot of Chocolate Hills in Sagbayan town in Bohol, the Department of Tourism (DOT) on Friday said it would push for the agency’s inclusion in the national government’s Protected Area Management Board (PAMB).

”On the national level, since PAMB is a creation of law and DOT is not a part of PAMB, we are lobbying for legislation to amend its composition to include the DOT so it may give its insights and guidance on sustainable tourism development for protected areas,” Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said on Thursday during a meeting with Bohol provincial officials.

According to Republic Act No. 11038, or the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System Act, PAMB is composed of nongovernmental organizations, local governments, and officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Agriculture, National Economic Development Authority, Department of Science and Technology, Philippine National Police and Department of National Defense.

If included in the board, Frasco said the DOT could provide inputs on the protection and preservation of the country’s protected areas, particularly in tourism destinations like Bohol, which is the country’s first-ever Global Geopark recognized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

“As we leave the investigations and regulatory movements to both the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the DENR, we felt that it was incumbent upon us in the Department of Tourism to reach out to you to let you know that our partnership for tourism shall continue,” Frasco told Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado.

Aumentado, for his part, said that the Bohol government would establish a new committee tasked to oversee and review guidelines on matters related to investments and initiatives that would not compromise the environment and protected areas.

In its statement, the DOT said that the controversial Captain’s Peak Resort was not accredited by the department and did not have a pending application for the same.

Following the closure of the establishment, Frasco said the DOT would offer alternative livelihood training programs and tour guiding kits for the affected workers.

Carnival Freedom's next two sailings canceled after funnel fire, second within 2 years

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the Florida-based ship's next two sailings are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

Thousands of passengers with scheduled cruises will be affected by the canceled cruises during a busy spring break period for Carnival and other cruise lines.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cay due to adverse weather.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

How safe are cruise stops? Travel advisories are only one marker for destinations

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The Carnival Freedom next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled.

In May 2022 , a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.

Yale got a little help from Idaho’s band during March Madness upset

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

There already is a famous band known as Madness, but these musicians from the University of Idaho have gone one step beyond.

With Yale’s pep band unable to make the trip from Connecticut to Spokane, Washington, the Idaho marching band showed up as a replacement to support the Bulldogs in their upset win over No. 13 Auburn .

“I saw them out there and they had their sheets, so they knew the music in terms of what to play,” Yale coach James Jones said after the game. “It was great. Having that atmosphere and the people coming out and supporting us, there’s nothing better than that, and we can’t appreciate them more than to be Bulldog fans.

“A lot of times when you’re on the road and you’re the underdog, a lot of times the crowd goes in your favor and that helped a little bit tonight, too.”

Yale players react on the bench during the second half of Yale's upset of Auburn in a first-round college basketball game in the men's NCAA Tournament in Spokane, Wash.

UI band director Spencer Martin and the 29-member ensemble dressed in Yale gear and colors after accepting the request earlier in the week.

“It’s fun for the university, certainly for our students,” Martin told the Lewiston (Idaho) Tribune before the tournament started. “The Vandals are going Ivy League.”

Idaho, which plays in the Big Sky Conference and finished this season 11-21 overall, last made the NCAA Tournament in 1990.
