Our Eversure European Breakdown Cover policies have been designed to help protect you against the costs incurred in the event of a breakdown of your vehicle whilst driving in Europe.

European Breakdown Cover offers full roadside assistance and recovery from your front door all the way across Europe, and back again. Cover for Single trip is available for trips lasting 1 day upwards, and annual policies cover multiple trips up to 90 days each time. We offer cover for onward travel, including a replacement vehicle and accommodation where appropriate. We will reimburse you fees if you breakdown on a European motorway, and if required we will repatriate your vehicle up to its market value.

What is European Breakdown Cover?

Simply put, European Breakdown cover is insurance that provides you with cover in Europe, including the UK.

Having cover in place for your next European road trip can help prevent big problems should you run into difficulties whilst driving abroad.

Breakdowns in the UK can be stressful enough, but if your break down whilst in a different country it can become incredibly difficult to resolve without breakdown cover in place.

Which European Breakdown Cover is Right for Me?

Our European breakdown cover can be split into two different kinds of policies, single trip and annual.

To find out which is right for you, we’ve put together a guide to help you decide:

Single Trip

For people who are travelling to Europe as a one off and aren’t likely to be going again any time soon, single trip European breakdown cover may be right for you.

This is one-off cover designed for people who don’t usually travel abroad much and need breakdown cover for a few weeks or so whilst they’re in Europe.

For more info, head to our single trip European page for all the answers

If you plan on travelling to Europe every year, or even multiple times a year, then annual European cover sounds like the best option for you.

This is cover that renews each year and provides you with total European cover through the entire calendar year.

With annual cover, you only need to pay a one-off payment each year and be happy in the knowledge that you’re sorted for the year and won’t need to think about it again.

Which Countries Will I Be Covered In?

Our European breakdown cover will provide protection for your vehicle in the following European countries and principalities:

Albania, Andorra, Austria, Balearics, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canary Isles, Corsica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Madeira, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, San Marino, Sardinia, Serbia, Sicily, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Vatican City.

What is Included in European Breakdown Cover?

European Breakdown Cover provide some unique benefits that simply aren’t available with UK breakdown cover, most noticeably, motorway fees cover. We’ve outlined some of the major benefits of European breakdown cover below:

  • Roadside Assistance

Just like with UK breakdown cover, our European cover provides roadside assistance as standard. So whether your cruising down the autobahn in Germany, or weaving your way through the vineyards of Bordeaux, help will be at hand should you break down.

Onward Travel

To help get you where you need to be, onward travel can be a huge help if you’ve broken down in Europe. If repairs to your vehicle are taking a while and you would like to complete your journey, having onward travel can be really useful whilst abroad, especially if your holiday has only just begun.

Alternative Accommodation

Our European policies can even provide you with overnight accommodation if repairs aren’t progressing quickly, so you and your family can stay in a local hotel while you wait and be reimbursed (up to a certain amount) for the rooms you used.

Repatriation

In very rare circumstances, if the repairs to your vehicle are complicated and all other options have been exhausted, then you or your vehicle may be repatriated home to complete repairs there.

This is usually the last throw of the dice when it comes to European breakdown cover – it hardly ever happens, but you’ll be glad it’s there if you’re ever unlucky enough to be in this situation!

Motorway Fees

Motorway fees cover is unique to European breakdown policies. In some countries, if you break down on the motorway you’ll be charged to call out a special recovery vehicle as normal vehicles won’t be able to reach you. It can be a confusing concept for UK drivers, which is why we’ve put together a handy guide all about it below.

Hire Car Cover

Sometimes you may want to hire a replacement vehicle whilst your car is being repaired to help you get around while you wait. Our European breakdown cover policies offer this benefit as standard so you’ll be safe in the knowledge that you’ll have this option should you need it.

What Do I Do If I Break Down?

As stressful and as scary as breaking down in a foreign country may be, the first thing to do is to not panic!

Make sure your vehicle is in as safe a place as possible and when you’re happy it is you’ll need to contact your assistance provider to let them know what’s happened.

The phone number for your assistance provider will be at the top of your policy certificate, so it’s a good idea to save this number in your phone so it’s easy to get a hold of when you need it.

Let your assistance provider know what’s happened in as much detail as possible so they can provide the most appropriate service for you – a local recovery agent will then be dispatched to hopefully get you going as quickly as possible.

Our FAQs are intended as a guide and are not exhaustive, you should not rely on these in their entirety and should read the Policy Wording for all policy Terms, Conditions and Exclusions. If you have any additional queries regarding our insurance please use our Contact Us section to get in touch. We will endeavour to respond to any queries within 24 business hours.

Our Eversure Reviews

Feedback for eversure has been compiled from 699 customer reviews:.

We traveled in Europe by car for a few days and I needed insurance which helps if something happens, luckily nothing happened so I can't say more about the service

I've done this once on Trustpilot already. I said easy to find on comparison sites and a good to have single trip 4 day as an option but as I was pained to have my trip cancelled as was to visit Le Mans this coming weekend...but the French got a jolt of Covid and that put the kaibosh on my visit. If it had been a few weeks I would have cancelled but it was suddenly last weekend the isolation came in, they didn't want us!!!!

They were fine. Didn't have to make any claims so this review is largely irrelevant but I was happy with the price for peace of mind.

Competitive quote and it was all I needed.

very good service

Good service all round

Good response but a long time waiting to talk to someone on the phone and a lon time processing the claim

Easy to setup policy

Excellent service definitely use you again.

There is past 6 weeks and i didn't receive my money back,

excellent deal peace of mind easy to do price fantastic

Very quick and easy and price competitive

Great value, easy to buy and great response when my car broke down aboard. Quick response and good communication throughout

Bought the policy through a comparison website, and as we had the same policy last year, it was easy to find, and buy

Quick, polite, good value for money

Incredible service for what I paid. I’ll never use anyone else again.

Call operator friendly and polite. Acceptable price quoted. All fine

This type of insurance is not worth purchasing. I can see that all the positive reviews are from people who have found "buying" insurance easy. They certainly make sure that it's easy to take your money. But as soon as you try to get help - they [now PEX Insure - a 3rd party provider] immediately say that you're not covered - even before they've asked you for your insurance policy number. I broke down yesterday in Southern France (well technically the car still runs - but the rear spring coil snapped - and technically in the UK, that would be an MOT failure (mechanical breakdown) - and would certainly invalidate any insurance if you continued to drive - knowing of the fault. On hearing of the initial clunk we thought it would be sensible to pull in at a garage (first mistake - invalidates cover). The garage we found isn't Audi, so they had to order parts - 2 days wait. Eversure weren't remotely interested in helping us get to the nearest audi garage - 40km (too far for the insurance cover), no hire car support, not even when we said we could cover our accommodation costs. So basically, I don't know what is covered with this type of insurance. So don't be lured by the "price". Go for something like the AA which understands and is at least helpful when you are actually in a crisis. Perhaps Eversure will only process a claim if you are totally stranded and they have to come and collect you (not sure if normal cars do give up the ghost like that). But I suspect that this insurance is only useful if you are having trouble changing a tyre. Caveat emptor still applies. Reviewers - please don't give it 5 stars for just taking your money.

We added a comment on 28th November 2018 , by Eversure Insurance: I'm really sorry that you suffered an issue when driving in France and that you felt the PEX Breakdown cover you had from us didn't provide the assistance you were expecting. Whilst I appreciate the situation must have been most stressful, it's true that the circumstances you describe would not have been met by this policy as it is designed to recover you to a garage local to where you've broken down. It isn't designed to relay a policy holder to another garage, and it will only respond to a vehicle that is completely immobilized. You're right, we do sell on a non-advised basis but we're always happy to take calls asking about the cover levels before a customer purchases. As with all insurance, it's really important to read the policy wording to make sure it meets your requirements. Thanks, Jeremy

You are hitting the road in Europe and you'd like to get properly covered in case your vehicle breaks down whilst you are travelling on the continent?

You are wondering what is European Breakdown Cover, and which insurer to go for?

We will tell you everything you need to know in the below guide.

What is European Breakdown Cover?

European breakdown cover is basically the exact same cover than standard breakdown cover, except that the policy will cover if your vehicle breaks down wherever on the continent.

Taking out European Breakdown Cover will ensure you that you will get assistance if your vehicle breaks down on the road side as long as you are travelling across a country covered by your policy. Depending on the level of policy you will choose, your vehicle can be brought to a garage or you can get a courtesy car whilst your vehicle is brought back home by your insurance company.

European cover is, in most of the cases, an optional extra for which you need to pay an extra charge. You do not need it if you are only planning to drive in the UK.

Get your best European Breakdown Cover

with our partner AA Insurance

What is the best European Breakdown Cover ?

With the COVID-19 pandemic, insurers might struggle to provide you assistance in some countries. Check before leaving the UK.

AA European breakdown cover

AA offers you European Breakdown Cover starting from as cheap as £7 per day. The company has over 40,000 garages partners in 44 countries in mainland Europe.

Key benefits with AA European Breakdown Cover is that you will get:

  • 24/7 english speaking helpline
  • a Defaqto 5 stars rated breakdown cover plan
  • covers any vehicle: cars, motorhomes, vans, motorcycles, caravans etc.
  • up to £50,000 onward and accomodation travel expenses in case your vehicle breaks down.

RAC European breakdown cover

At RAC, you can choose between two levels of European breakdown cover, both rated 5 stars by Defaqto. Both plans offers a dedicated 24/7 English speaking helpline.

Why do I need European Breakdown Cover plan?

Having your vehicle breaking down on the side of the road always is always very annoying. But it can become a real nightmare when it happens far from your home, on family holidays for instance. Additionally, getting your car brought to a garage or getting your towed vehicle recovered to the UK if it can't be fixed can lead to thousand of pounds unexpected expenses.

For instance, if you are driving in France and your vehicle breaks down, calling a tow truck will cost you:

So image your vehicle breaks down 100 kilometers away from any tow truck agency and you need your car to be brought to a local garage.....

If you are driving outside the UK, you must absolutely consider taking out European Breakdown Assistance to travel with complete peace of mind. Your UK breakdown cover policy will, in most of the cases, not cover you if your vehicle breaks down on the continent.

Should I take out personal or vehicle European breakdown cover?

When taking out a breakdown cover either for nationwide assistance or European one, you will have the choice to take vehicle or personal European breakdown cover plan.

  • Vehicle European Breakdown Cover means that you car is covered if it breaks down in Europe during your trip;
  • Personal European Breakdown Cover means that you, as an individual, will be covered in case your vehicle breaks down, whatever the vehicle is providing it respects the age and registration criteria.

Good to know

Always check Personal breakdown cover exclusions. If you are driving an old car whilst travelling, you might not be covered in case it breaks down.

What types of European Breakdown Cover are there?

You can pick between two types of European Breakdown Cover:

  • single trip European breakdown cover : this plan will cover you for a single trip from the UK to mainland Europe and for a limited trip duration (it can be from one day and up to 90, 180 days or even more depending on the insurer)
  • annual multi-trip European breakdown cover : this plan will cover you for all your road trips on the continent. It is recommended if you often drive in Europe. A duration limit will apply on any of your trip.

What does European Breakdown Cover includes?

Usually European Breakdown Cover include the following features:

What are the optional extras you can get on top of your basic European breakdown cover policy?

On top of your basic insurance including a number of call outs, roadside assistance, a certain limit for onward travel and accomodation and home start rescue, you will be able to get:

  • lost car keys cover: if you loose your car keys and you need replacement.
  • wrong fuel cover: if you need drainage and your engine is damaged.
  • repatriation of passengers to the UK: this will cover the cost of being repatriated to the UK by any alternative mode of transportation as you can't go home with your own vehicle. This cover can be either included as standard or available as optional extras.

What vehicles do European Breakdown plans cover?

Usually, European Breakdown Cover plans assist any type of vehicle including:

  • motorcycles
  • minibuses etc.

However, some exclusions often apply. For instance, if your vehicle is above 10 years old or if your vehicle is more than 3.5 tonnes or up to 6.4 meters long. You must check upfront what are the insurer's main exclusions.

What should I pay attention to before taking out a European breakdown cover?

Before purchasing a breakdown cover you must pay attention to:

  • the list of countries included in your policy schedule
  • the duration of trip allowed for which you will be covered whilst driving in Europe
  • if you can call your insurer 24/7 for roadside assistance
  • if you can get a courtesy car to continue your trip
  • if your cover includes towing services, onward travel cover and vehicle recovery to original destination, as those unexpected expenses may quickly become a nightmare if you are not properly covered.

How much is European Breakdown Cover?

The average price of European Breakdown Cover is around £66.

However you can get cover from as cheap as £7 per day, for a single trip cover. An annual multi-trip cover will often cost around £80 per year.

What affects my European Breakdown Cover premium?

The European Breakdown Cover premium you will have to pay mainly depends on:

  • destination and trip duration
  • single or annual multi-trip breakdown cover
  • vehicle or personal breakdown cover
  • your car, make, model and age.

Compare cheapest European Breakdown Cover

To compare cheapest European breakdown cover deals, nothing simpler. You can just refer to our comparison tool above which lists best and award winning breakdown cover in the UK including European cover options.

The more comprehensive cover you choose, the cheaper will be the european cover.

What should I do if my vehicle breaks down in Europe?

If your vehicle breaks down whilst you are driving in mainland Europe, there are some basic gestures to adopt in order to stay safe:

  • pull over on the roadside, far away from the traffic
  • get out of your car and stay behind any motorways' barriers
  • once you (and the other passengers) are safe, call your insurer and ask for immediate support
  • if you are not covered with European Breakdown Cover, then you can call 112 which is the emergency number for all EU countries.
