The ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) are popular destinations with cruise vacationers during the fall, especially during the later part of hurricane season, since they’re outside of the Caribbean hurricane zone.

If you don’t mind a little bit of unpredictability and tropical rain, the early fall season is also one of the best times to visit the rest of the Caribbean because of the cooler but still warm weather, small crowds, and low fares.

MIAMI BEACH — The COVID pandemic drove the cruise industry to a standstill, but numbers released Tuesday signal the years of comeback are officially over with more expansion on tap.

More than 31.7 million passengers took cruises worldwide in 2023, said Kelly Craighead, Cruise Line International Association president and CEO, speaking at the annual Seatrade Cruise Global conference at Miami Beach Convention Center.

CLIA is the lobbying group for member cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC and most other major brands.

The pandemic shut down sailing from March 2020 with only a small number of ships coming back online 18 months later in summer 2021. Cruise lines didn’t return to full strength until partially through 2022, so it wasn’t until a full year of sailing in 2023 that the industry could get a real handle on just what the demand had grown to as people returned to vacation travel.

“We are an industry that’s resilient and thriving all around the world, breaking records in ways we might never have imagined,” she said.

The 2023 total is 2 million more than the industry had in 2019. CLIA projects 34.1 million in 2024 growing to 34.6 million in 2025. It’s still a miniscule chunk of the overall travel pie of more than 1.3 billion, but cruise’s share is growing.

She noted that surveys of travelers who would consider a cruise for a vacation are at an all-time high, noting that 82% who had previously cruised said they would cruise again, but more importantly, among those who had never sailed, 71% would consider it.

The youngest generations — Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z — are the biggest drivers.

The fleet for the growing demand continues as well, including the introduction this year of the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.

She said CLIA member lines had more than 300 ships sailing globally for the first time in 2023, with 14 new ships that began sailing in 2023 and another eight expected before the end of the year. They have 88 new ships on order through 2028.

Already this year, both Royal Caribbean Group and Carnival Corp. announced major new ship construction deals, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings added to that this week with its order of eight more vessels across its three brands.

The heads of those groups were on stage to discuss where the industry is headed and enjoy their recent success.

Carnival Corp.’s president and CEO Josh Weinstein put it in a way that gained plaudits from fellow panelists and others at the conference.

“The concept of pent-up demand for cruising is gone,” he said. “We have been cruising for three years, right? It’s over. This is natural demand because we all provide amazing experiences. We delivered happiness to literally 31 million guests last year. And people see it, they feel it.”

A big part of what cruising missed during the pandemic he said was that word-of-mouth promotion that is needed to convince people to try their product.

“We now have 31 million people getting off our ships and going home and telling their friends and family who have never cruised before, ‘You don’t know what you’re missing.’ ‘This is amazing.'”

All of the leaders echoed the industry line that they offer a much better value than land-based vacations, but that the experience gap between the two has now shifted in their favor coming out of the pandemic.

“The appreciation for building memories with your friends and family coming out of COVID is at extraordinarily high levels,” said Jason Liberty, president & CEO at Royal Caribbean Group. “Also wealth transfer, right? Grandparents wanting to see that wealth transfer live, watching their kids and their grandkids experience that is also at an all-time high. … We have the secular trends of people buying less stuff, they want experiences. We’re in the experience business.”

Another bright aspect to the industry has been the spillover effect of all of the new ships since the pandemic, said Harry Sommer, president & CEO at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“Their new products are so extraordinary, and so much better than what was delivered back in ’15, ’16 and ’17, that it’s driving additional excitement for the entire industry,” Somer said. “When any new ship is delivered, no matter whether it’s part of our portfolio or the other portfolios, demand improves for all of us because it adds excitement to the industry.”

How Royal Caribbean is leading the charge in the cruise industry comeback

Americans are cruising again — and at record-breaking levels.

Carnival , Norwegian and Royal Caribbean all reported entering the year with record highs for individual bookings and cruise pricing.

It's an impressive turnaround after the industry was largely halted for 15 months after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a no-sail order in March 2020 at the onset of the Covid pandemic in the U.S.

And Royal Caribbean has been leading the way. It's seen the highest ticket revenue increase relative to 2019 out of the big three cruise giants. And last month, its share price surpassed its pre-pandemic high. Carnival and Norwegian both trade more than 50% lower than their 2019 levels.

"The No. 1 reason why Royal Caribbean has outperformed its peers and recovered the fastest is because they issued the least amount of equity during the pandemic. All of the companies had to issue equity. … All the companies had to issue convertible debt, and Royal Caribbean was able to manage its cash position in a way that utilized the least amount of equity," said Brandt Montour, Barclays senior equity research analyst.

Eastern Caribbean cruise weather matters a great deal to anyone planning a cruise in that region of the world.

Eastern Caribbean cruise weather ranges from the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter to high 80s in the summer. The dry season goes from January through April, while the main rainy season is June through November.

Cruises generally are available for the eastern, western and southern areas of the Caribbean. Rainfall is moderate during most of the year, but it hits a high point during a brief rainy season in June and again during a longer rainy season in September and October, which are the peak months of the annual Caribbean hurricane season.

Turks and Caicos Islands lie southeast of the Bahamas and as a result have slightly warmer temperatures. Winter months still have highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Annual Hurricane Season

Time of year is a much bigger factor in dealing with eastern Caribbean cruise weather. The annual hurricane season officially runs from June 1 until Nov. 30. On average, about 12 to 15 storms move through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico each year.

But individual destinations may avoid most of them because they lie outside of the storms’ paths.

June and November see the fewest storms and hurricanes. On average, there are three storms with two becoming hurricanes in July and August, four storms with two becoming hurricanes in September, and four storms with very few becoming hurricanes in October.

The most rain falls in the eastern Caribbean in September and October.

Best Times to Go

Anyone planning to take an eastern Caribbean cruise that includes the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos would best go from early spring to late summer and avoid the winter months because of cooler nighttime temperatures and chilly seawater.

Vacations who plan to stay on an island will find that November through July are good months for the southernmost islands in the eastern region. Any vacation in the Caribbean during the fall months has a high risk of rain from storms or hurricanes.

Prices for cruises, resorts and hotels are lower during those months as a result. If lower prices are appealing, consider buying travel insurance.

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Moscow is April and May, when the temperature creeps into the 50s and 60s, the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day, and hotel rates have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges. Of course, the golden period is summer, when the city is warm and bustling. But if you want to (slightly) spare yourself from the perpetually expensive rates, try the shoulder seasons in the spring and early fall. Preferably spring, since fall experiences more rainfall and less sunlight. Winters are brutally cold, but this is when you'll get a true glimpse into the Moscow experience (A frost-bitten walk through Red Square seems to intensify the historical significance of this great capital city).

What You Need to Know

A little Russian English is spoken only in major hotels and restaurants, and you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the less tourist-heavy areas. American visitors also struggle with the Cyrillic spellings and pronunciations. Practice some key Russian phrases on the long flight over.

A little tipping Unlike most other European cities, tipping (five to 10 percent) in restaurants is the custom.

A lot of vodka This Russian drink of choice (yes, they usually consume it straight) is found at any bar. But if you wish to taste it and learn about its origins, the Moscow Distillery Cristall is your best bet.

How to Save Money in Moscow

If it seems too good to be true It probably is. Take that proverb to heart in Moscow, and don't expect the Czarist medal you purchased off a street vendor to be worth anything more than a good memory.

If you're oblivious on the subway You'll probably leave several rubles lighter. Pickpockets prey on unsuspecting foreigners in crowded places, particularly metro cars. Beware!

If you're not scared of the dark You may be able to handle Moscow's long nights in fall, winter and spring, when hotels offer the lowest rates. December sees an average of 18 hours of sunlight … in total.

Culture & Customs

Some helpful Russian greetings include the informal hello (pronounced, pri-VET ); the formal hello ( Zdravst-vwee-tye ); the informal goodbye ( pah-KAH ); and the formal goodbye ( Dah svih-DA-nee-ye ). To thank someone, say " Spas-EE-ba ."

What to Eat

Traditional Russian fare focuses on hearty meat dishes and cold soup, a particularly Russian specialty. But don't arrive in Moscow thinking you'll experience only the old cuisine. Russia's new personality has been accompanied by a lavish taste for international cuisine, especially Asian food. Sushi and Asian fusion restaurants are among the most popular in the city, and other dining options include American and Italian cuisine. Eating out, like everything in Moscow, can be very expensive, but you can find cheaper restaurants in shopping centers and areas outside the city center. 

Stay alert for pickpockets when using public transport and when visiting the main tourist sites. Many an unsuspecting traveler has been relieved of some rubles on the Moscow Metro and near Red Square. Also, make sure to exercise extra caution when leaving bars and clubs at night.

There have been cases of corrupt police asking for random fines -- if this occurs, get the officer's number and name and ask to go to the police station with him or her.

Getting Around Moscow

The best way to get around Moscow is the metro. Faster and more efficient than the trolley buses and trams, this extensive system has stations that contain beautiful ornamentation, sculptures and mosaics. You could rent a car, but it's best to use public transportation to avoid the city's perpetually congested roads. Plus, street signs are all in Russian. In fact, English signs are nonexistent in the public transit system as well, so it's best to quickly get familiar with a map. Most travelers arrive through Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), but there are several other airports that serve the metro area. Several buses and a metro line shuttle airport travelers to and from downtown.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Acquiring a visa to travel in Russia is a bit more complicated and expensive than visiting other countries. Every foreign traveler entering Russia must have a Russian-based sponsor (like a hotel, tour company, university or relative). In addition to a valid U.S. passport, you must also obtain a travel visa from a Russian embassy or consulate prior to arriving in Russia. If you plan to stay in Russia for more than seven days, you have to register your visa and migration card (the white paper document given by the border police on first entry to Russia) with the Federal Migration Service. Thinking of visiting Moscow in September? While you will miss the more mild summer weather, Moscow weather in September is still fairly warm...by Russian standards. Temperatures will begin to drop as autumn arrives and the famously cold Russian winters are still many weeks away.

Moscow Weather in September

With an average temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius), the weather can change very quickly in Russia, but you can expect the temperature to remain in this range during at least the beginning of the month. It won't get much warmer with the city boasting an average high temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius), but it won't be too cold either with an average low temperature of 46 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius). However, Moscow can be a bit dreary, receiving approximately 15 days of rain every September and experiencing only five hours of daylight. There is even a chance you might catch the first snow of the year in September, but it will likely only be a light flurry.

What to Pack

Though warm air lingers in September, autumn temperatures call for jackets or sweaters, especially in the mornings and evenings. If you plan to be out and about all day, be sure to take a cover-up in the case of wind or rain, and you may want to pack a hat, scarf, and gloves , particularly if you're used to a warmer climate. If it's raining, you'll want to make sure you have enough layers to keep you warm and dry.

September Events in Moscow

You won't find as many events happening in Moscow as in the summer, there are still plenty of fairs and festivals to experience in September, for athletes art enthusiasts, and fans of high fashion.

In 2020, many of these events may be canceled so check the organizer's websites for the latest details.

• Cosmoscow : Russia's only international contemporary art fair, takes place within Moscow's Gostiny Dvor. This event prides itself on featuring galleries less than five years old, as well as emerging artists. The festival selects one creator as the artist of the year, who has the chance to present a large-scale installation for the fair to exhibit. The 2020 festival is scheduled for September 10–13.
• Promsvyazbank Moscow Marathon :  This yearly event offers runners a one of a kind tour of the capital city. Throughout the race, runners can view more than 30 world-famous attractions, including the Kremlin , the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow City , and four of the Seven Sisters skyscrapers. If you are up for the challenge, run this event on September 20, 2020, for a one-of-a-kind tour of Moscow.

• September is a lovely month to travel to Eastern Europe . Crowds for important and usually tourist-heavy sights thin and the autumn temperatures make exploring historic landmarks on foot pleasant. 
• Enjoy the autumnal air and changing leaves in one of Moscow's parks, while taking in the view on Sparrow Hills, or exploring one of the city's outdoor sights, such as Novodevichy Convent or Old Arbat Street.
• If you get an unexpectedly cold or wet day, take advantage of the wide variety of indoor Moscow attractions on offer. From shopping at the storied GUM department store to ballet performances at the legendary Bolshoi Theater, Moscow is much more than walks through Red Square .
