How to Clear Cache in the iPad Safari Browser

Clearing the cache on your iPad’s Safari browser is simple: just go to your iPad Settings, scroll down to Safari, and tap “Clear History and Website Data.” By doing this, your browser gets a fresh start, free from the clutter of old data.

What happens next? Well, clearing your cache removes temporary files saved by websites, which can free up storage space and potentially solve performance or loading issues with websites you visit. However, it also means you’ll lose some browsing convenience, like saved login details or preferences on frequently visited sites.

Introduction

Have you ever experienced sluggishness while browsing on your iPad, or maybe a website just isn’t loading correctly? It’s like when your room gets cluttered, and you can’t find what you need. The same can happen with your Safari browser. The culprit is often the cache—a spot where your browser stores website data to make revisiting pages faster. However, over time, this digital clutter needs clearing out, just like tidying up a messy room.

This article is a must-read for any iPad user. Whether you’re a student researching for a project, a professional who relies on quick information access, or just someone enjoying the wonders of the internet, learning how to clear your cache on Safari can enhance your browsing experience. Think of it as a quick detox for your device, ensuring that it runs efficiently and effectively.

A Step by Step Tutorial

Before diving into the steps, understand that clearing your cache will help your iPad’s Safari run smoother and more securely, much like giving your device a mini-refresh.

Step 1: Open your iPad Settings

Navigate to the ‘Settings’ app on your iPad to begin the process.

The Settings app is where the heart of your iPad’s configuration lives. It’s your control panel for everything from adjusting your wallpaper to protecting your privacy.

Step 2: Scroll to ‘Safari’

In the Settings menu, swipe up until you find ‘Safari’ and select it.

Safari settings contain all the adjustments specific to your web browsing experience, including privacy features and website data.

Step 3: Tap ‘Clear History and Website Data’

Locate and select the ‘Clear History and Website Data’ option to clear your cache.

This action will remove your browsing history, cookies, and other browsing data. It’s a simple click, but it’s a powerful tool for maintaining your digital hygiene.

Benefit 1: Speeds Up Safari

Clearing the cache can speed up your Safari browser.

When you clear out old, unneeded files, Safari can run faster, since it doesn’t have to sort through a pile of outdated data.

Benefit 2: Frees Up Space on Your iPad

It can free up valuable storage space on your iPad.

Just like cleaning out a closet, clearing the cache can give you more space for new downloads and apps.

Benefit 3: Resolves Loading and Formatting Issues

It can fix websites that aren’t loading or displaying properly.

Sometimes websites update their code, and your cached version conflicts with the live site. Clearing your cache ensures you’re seeing the most recent version of a website.

Drawback 1: Logged Out of Websites

You will be logged out of most websites.

Like losing your keys in a tidy room, clearing your cache means you’ll need to log back into websites since your saved login data gets wiped.

Drawback 2: Website Load Times May Initially Increase

The first load time on websites may be slower.

When you revisit a website after clearing your cache, it has to download all that data again, which might take a little extra time on the first visit.

Drawback 3: Loss of Personalized Website Settings

You may lose some personalized settings on websites.

If a website saved your preferences in your cache, like a chosen language or layout, you’d need to set these up again.

Additional Information

When you clear your cache, think of it as not just dusting off the cobwebs but also taking a proactive step to protect your personal information. It’s a good practice to do this regularly, much like changing the oil in a car to keep it running smoothly. You might also consider using Private Browsing, which doesn’t save your browsing history or cache in the first place. It’s like using a library computer—it doesn’t remember who you are after you leave. Also, don’t forget that clearing the cache is not the same as deleting cookies or browsing history, though some steps may overlap. For a more thorough digital clean-up, you may need to look into those areas separately. Lastly, if you’re troubleshooting a specific website, sometimes just clearing the cache for that particular site is enough, which can be done in the Safari settings under “Advanced” and “Website Data.”

  • Open your iPad Settings.
  • Scroll to ‘Safari.’
  • Tap ‘Clear History and Website Data.’

Frequently Asked Questions

It might, especially if those passwords are not saved in a password manager or iCloud Keychain.

Just as a chef keeps their kitchen clean or a mechanic organizes their tools, keeping your iPad’s Safari browser free from digital clutter is essential for optimal performance. Clearing the cache is like regular maintenance for your device, ensuring that you’re getting the best possible experience while you surf the web. Not only does this process protect your personal information, but it can also resolve annoying website issues and speed up your browsing. Think of it as a small investment of your time that pays off in the form of a more efficient, faster, and safer iPad. So go ahead, give your Safari browser a clean slate, and enjoy the seamless browsing that follows. And remember, stay curious and keep learning—you never know when a simple tip like this can make your digital life a whole lot easier.

How to clear the cache on your iPad to make it run more efficiently

  • To clear the Safari cache on your iPad , go to the Settings app's Safari section. After you clear this cache, you'll be logged out of every website you've previously visited, and will have to log in again.
  • To clear the cache on your iPad of app data, you'll have to delete apps. By going to your iPad's Storage screen, you can see how much space each individual app takes up.
  • Clearing your iPad's cache is a good tool if your iPad is acting strangely, or you're running out of storage space.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories .

Like any computer, your iPad keeps some memory space reserved to store information you've recently used, like internet cookies and images. This space is called a cache. Ideally, the cache speeds up your iPad by giving the device fast access to certain data if you need it again.

But if you notice that your iPad has been sluggish recently, or is misbehaving in some way, one remedy may be to clear the cache. If that doesn't work, you might try some other troubleshooting tips found in our article " Can iPads get viruses? "

There are two caches you can try to clear: the one used by your web browser, Safari, and the cache for your apps. To delete an app's cache, though, you need to delete the app. However, you can then reinstall the app immediately after.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Ipad (from $329.99 at best buy), how to clear your safari cache on an ipad.

1. Open the Settings app and then tap "Safari."

2. Tap "Clear History and Website Data."

3. Confirm that you want to do this by tapping Clear in the Clear History and Data dialog box.

After a moment, your browser cache will clear. This will reclaim space used by the cache and delete web information that your iPad is temporarily storing. Note that it'll also sign you out of any web pages you are logged into, so it'll be like you are browsing on a new device.

How to clear your app cache on an iPad

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap "General," and then tap "iPad Storage." The iPad Storage page will show you how much space is used on your iPad by different kinds of apps. (It might take a minute or two for this to appear, since the iPad has to calculate the free and used space.)

3. Your iPad might make recommendations to save space, such as deleting apps you rarely use or deleting videos or email attachments. If you want to save space, you can try one or more of these options.

4. Review the apps installed on your iPad – they are arranged from the largest at the top to the smallest at the bottom.

5. Tap an app that you want to clear. Note that the app's details page shows you how much space the app takes, as well as how much space its data is consuming.

At this point, you have several options:

  • Tap "Delete App" to uninstall the app (and discard any data the app was caching). Then go to the App Store and re-install the app. You'll get a fresh version of the app with no stored data. You can do this even for a paid app without paying a second time. This is a good option if the app itself is relatively small but the data is taking up a lot of space.
  • Tap "Offload App" to uninstall the app but keep the app's data on the iPad . This might be a good idea if the app itself is very large and you need to reclaim the space, but you might want to reinstall it at another time and keep using the existing data.
  • One exception is the Photos app. iOS won't let you uninstall it, but you can tap "Enable" to let the app save smaller photos, potentially saving you a lot of space.

Clear cache on iPhone for third-party apps

  • Clearing the cache of third-party apps varies from developer to developer. Some like Slack offer an option in the app preferences in iOS Settings, while others like Facebook don’t. Check out the settings of your apps to see your options (Settings app > app name).
  • For apps that don’t provide a clear cache button, deleting the app and reinstalling it is another option.

You can always take a look at Settings   > General > iPhone Storage to prioritize which third-party apps you may want to tackle first.

How to clear the cache in Safari on Mac and iPhone - and what it does

William Gallagher's Avatar

Like every web browser, Safari stores data on your Mac , iPhone , and iPad , with the express purpose of speeding up your online life. You may have the kind of internet speed that Apple Park takes for granted, but even so, it's better to spend that speed where it's needed.

So when you revisit a website, Safari makes it so that as far as possible, you only need to download what has changed. Even with a news site that is being updated all day, the basic layout, the furniture of the page, doesn't change all that often, so Safari might as well download it once.

Behind the scenes, then, whenever you ask Safari to go to a site, it goes there with half an eye on what elements of the site it has already stored on your device. Then it will load up anything it can from your device, because retrieving locally stored data is always faster than downloading it.

No question, a Safari cache is a good thing. Except when it isn't.

When you should clear Safari's cache

It's possible for things to go wrong. If Safari doesn't appear to be loading a site, it could be that there's some data corruption in the cache.

Or it could be simply that you are tight on space and all of this invisibly stored cache data is taking up a lot of room. When you're particularly low on space, you know it, too, because your device runs noticeably slower.

So if you are having problems any time you're browsing the web on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, clearing the cache is at the very least a good first troubleshooting step.

You don't want to inadvertently introduce new problems or inconveniences, though. And clearing caches could also remove passwords that you thought Safari was saving for you.

So before you empty the cache, make sure that Safari is saving those passwords. On the Mac, go to System Preferences, click on Apple ID , then iCloud .

Or on iOS, open Settings , tap on your name at the top, then iCloud .

In either case, then check that Safari is turned on. With the Mac, that means a tick box is on, and with iOS, it means the slider button is turned on and showing green.

On the Mac, you'll need Safari to show you the normally hidden Develop menu

How to clear the cache in Safari on Mac

  • Launch Safari
  • Click on the Safari menu at top left
  • Choose Preferences
  • Click on Advanced
  • Tick the Show Develop menu in menu bar to set it to on
  • Close the Preferences window, and open the Develop menu
  • Choose Empty Caches

There is no OK button, and then no visible confirmation that the caches have been cleared. But they have been.

Choose Empty Caches from the Develop menu

How to clear the cache in Safari on iPhone and iPad

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down to Safari and tap
  • Choose Clear History and Website Data
  • Confirm by tapping the new Clear History and Data button that pops up

Unlike with the Mac, there is a visible indication that the cache has been cleared. The option for Clear History and Website Data is greyed out and unavailable.

Note that it won't stay unavailable. It is immediately available the moment you do anything more in Safari.

On iPhone and iPad, you have to clear both Safari's cache and history

What happens next

Once you have cleared the cache, you will typically find that some site loading problems are resolved. You'll also find that your device runs faster.

Except, of course, the next time you browse to a website, it will load a little slower than you're used to. But that will speed up again - once Safari has once more cached the site.

Boost your device's speed and optimize your storage space.

How to clear browser cache on iphone, clear cache for third-party apps on iphone, delete and reinstall apps, optimize storage for photos and music, last resort: factory reset your iphone or ipad.

Clearing the cache can optimize your iPhone and iPad. Older temporary files take up space and potentially affect the speed and efficiency of your browser and other apps. Here's how you can clear the cache on your iPhone and iPad.

The iPhone stores the cache for websites your visit to load them quickly whenever you open them again. A similar thing applies to apps that fetch fresh updates. But if the cache becomes too old, it stops matching the new website data, and the load times for web pages and apps slow. So clearing that cache frees up storage and delivers a smoother overall performance.

Removing old temporary files from your browser is good for resetting the page load speeds back to normal and making room for newer cache files. We'll cover how to do this in Safari, Chrome, and Edge.

Clear Cache in Safari

To get started, open the "Settings" on your iPhone or iPad.

Select the

Select "Safari."

Select

Scroll down and select "Clear History and Website Data." Note that this will also delete all browsing history and cookies .

Select

Select

Select the "Time Range" and choose "All Time." Then, select the items you want to erase. Keep in mind that removing passwords, browsing data, and autofill will also wipe it from Chrome on PC or Mac if you have enabled the Chrome sync.

Tap on red "Clear Browsing Data" at the bottom and confirm the pop-up.

Several third-party apps come with a cache-clearing option to ensure a smooth experience on your iPhone. The difference is that the option resides either in the Settings app or within the app itself. For instance, you can make the official Twitter app faster on your iPhone by clearing its cache.

First, open the official Twitter app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on your profile picture in the top-left corner.

Tap on the profile photo in the top-left corner.

Select "Settings and Privacy."

Select

Tap "Accessibility, Display, and Languages."

Select

Tap "Data Usage."

Select

Under the "Storage" section, select "Media Storage."

Select

Select "Clear Media Storage" and tap on the prompt for confirmation.

Select

Repeat the same process for the "Web Page Storage" and choose whether you want to remove all data from the Twitter app or only of the sites you had visited inside it.

Apart from clearing the browser and app caches, you can still make space and speed up your iPhone.

Not many apps offer an option to remove cache inside the app's settings. That leaves you with one option:  deleting and reinstalling apps. That process removes the cache and other files with the app. Unfortunately, you'll need to log in to some apps again. Using the built-in password manager  or a third-party password manager app, however, makes that easy.

Alternatively, to free up space on your iPhone or iPad, you can offload unused apps instead of deleting and reinstalling them. This removes the app from your device while retaining data files in case you want to use the app again later.

You may store thousands of photos and videos on your iPhone and eventually might run out of space. Thankfully, the Photos app lets you back up those photos to iCloud  while leaving compressed , more storage-efficient versions of the photos on your device.

Before you begin, make sure you've enabled the option to back up your photos to iCloud.

To get started, open the "Settings" app on your iPhone or iPad.

Head to the "Photos" section.

Select

Select the "Optimize iPhone Storage" option and close the "Settings" app.

Select

Your iPhone will take a backup of the photos and videos in full resolution to iCloud, provided you have enough storage space there.

Similarly, you can also optimize storage by letting iOS decide to remove the downloaded songs you haven't listened in a long time.

For that, fire up the "Settings" app and select "Music."

Select

Select "Optimize Storage."

Select

Turn on the toggle for "Optimize Storage," and then iOS will eventually remove the tracks you no longer listen to in the Music app. Also, you can choose what amount of storage you want to restain for music downloads.

Screen Rant

Why you should clear cache on ipad & how to do it.

Have an iPad that isn't loading websites correctly? It could be an issue with the cache! Here's how to clear it and (hopefully) all your problems.

Apple's iPad is a tablet, but in many ways, it works like a computer. This means that some of the same steps that help a computer keep running smoothly may also help an iPad. Many computers often experience issues loading websites, and this can also happen to the iPad. In these situations, clearing the cache could solve all of your problems.

Apple advanced the usefulness of the iPad significantly when it made its Safari web browser behave like a desktop Mac browser. This means that almost every website will behave the same on an iPad as it does on an iMac, MacBook, or Mac Pro. Of course, part of the normal computer experience is using a mouse and physical keyboard. That can be done on an iPad also, but Apple took care to offer most of the functionality of a mouse while using the touchscreen . Websites may have a different layout on an iPad, but this is a matter of the screen dimensions, not the browser. Apple does allow the user to change the zoom level, which can help if a particular website isn't presented well.

Deleting the Safari cache is a good idea in instances that a website appears to be out of date. It may also help when a website isn't performing correctly. A cache is made up of images, videos, and other data that websites use to display the contents of a page. Clearing these stored files will free up extra space. It should be noted though that a frequently visited website will load more slowly if its cache is cleared. That is why it's important to think about whether to clear the cache entirely or only for certain websites.

Tips For Clearing The Safari Cache On iPad

Apple iPad Safari clear cache

The good news? Clearing the Safari cache is easy to do using the Settings app. Open the Settings app on your iPad , scroll down the page, and tap 'Safari' once you find it. To clear the cache (and browsing history) for all websites, tap 'Clear History and Website Data,' and then tap 'Clear History and Data' on the pop-up to confirm the action.

Alternatively, iPad users can also choose to clear caches for only specific websites. From the same Safari page in the Settings app, scroll to the bottom of the Safari page and tap 'Advanced.' Tap 'Website Data,' tap the 'Edit' button in the top-right corner, and tap the '-' icon next to any website you want to remove. Doing so clears the data/cache for only that website — useful if only one or two sites are acting up. Websites are listed in order of how much data they're using, with the biggest data hogs listed first.

As for which method you should use, that all depends on what you're having trouble with. If Safari is having difficulty loading all (or most websites), it may be helpful to clear all history and website data. It's the fastest way to do so and instantly frees up extra storage space on your iPad. The problem, however, is that it also removes  all  browsing history from Safari. If only specific websites aren't working, it makes much more sense to go to the Advanced page and just remove the faulty ones. It keeps the other website data intact, the rest of your browsing history is untouched, and it allows other websites to keep loading as fast as possible.

How to Manage Browsing History on Safari for iPad

Protect your privacy on your mobile device

browser cache leeren safari ipad

What to Know

  • Open Safari . Select the Bookmarks icon.
  • Choose the Clock icon to open the History pane displaying the list of sites visited during the past month.
  • Select Clear and indicate which entries to delete using one of the four options: The last hour, Today, Today and yesterday, and All Time.

This article explains how to manage browsing history on Safari for iPad, including how to view and delete the iPad Safari history, cookies, and stored website data. This article applies to all iPad devices with iOS 10 or iPadOS 13 or later. The process for managing browser history in Safari on an iPhone is slightly different.

How to View and Delete Your iPad Browser History in Safari

Reviewing your iPad browser history is a straightforward process. Safari stores a log of websites you visit along with other related components, such as the cache and cookies. These elements enhance your browsing experience, but you may want to delete your browsing history for privacy reasons.

You can manage your web browsing history on the iPad in two ways. The easiest option is to do it directly in Safari:

Open the Safari web browser.

Select the Bookmarks icon (it looks like an open book) at the top of the screen.

Select the clock icon to open the History pane. A list of sites visited over the past month appears.

To delete a single website from the browser history, swipe left on its name.

Select  Clear at the bottom of the panel to reveal four options: The last hour, Today, Today and yesterday, and All time.

Select your preferred option to remove the browsing history from your iPad and all connected iCloud devices.

How to Delete History and Cookies From the iPad Settings App

Deleting the browser history through Safari doesn't remove all the data it stores. For a thorough cleaning, go to the iPad Settings app. You can also delete the browsing history and cookies from the Settings app. Clearing the history this way deletes everything Safari saved.

Select the gear icon on the Home screen to open the iPad Settings .

Scroll down and select Safari .

Scroll through the list of settings and select  Clear History and Website Data to delete the browsing history, cookies, and other cached website data.

Select  Clear to confirm, or select Cancel to return to the Safari settings without removing any data.

How to Delete Stored Website Data on iPad

Safari sometimes stores additional website data on top of a list of web pages you visited. For example, it can save passwords and preferences for frequently visited sites. If you want to delete this data but don't want to clear the browsing history or cookies, selectively delete specific data saved by Safari using the iPad Settings app.

Open the iPad Settings app.

Scroll to the bottom of the Safari settings screen and select Advanced .

Select  Website Data to display a breakdown of the data each website currently stores on the iPad.

Select Show All Sites to display the expanded list if necessary.

Select  Remove All Website Data  at the bottom of the screen to delete the site data at once, or swipe left on individual items to clear items one at a time.

More Information

As indicated when you tap the Clear History and Website Data button, this deletes your history, cache, and browsing data.

If you want to keep your history, then you can go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > and then tap the Website Data option and delete content from that menu instead.

This can be preferable since it not only allows you to keep your history, it also lets you choose the websites for which you wish to clear the data.

That can be beneficial if you are troubleshooting an issue or if there is particular browsing data that you want to keep.

If you have other Web browsers on your iPad, then this won’t affect the cache or history in those. You would need to open those browsers and follow the steps for deleting cache from there as well if you want to remove that data.

If you find that you are frequently deleting the cache on your iPad, then you might benefit from using Private Browsing instead. That way you can complete a Web browsing session and close the tabs , which will automatically delete the cache and history.

Familiarizing yourself with the process of deleting your iPad cache will allow you to perform this action whenever you think it’s necessary.

While the inconvenience of being signed out of accounts and emptying shopping carts can be a bit of a hassle, that is often outweighed by the benefit of a browsing experience that works more reliably, and isn’t using cookies and other stored data to affect the way you browse the Web.

How to Clear Cache and Cookies in Safari for Mac, iPhone, and iPad

Apple’s Safari browser brought several features and interface refresh in the past few years. You can now use tab groups on Safari for macOS and even Safari extensions on iPad . This makes the browser a good option compared to competitors like Microsoft Edge . When Safari is your go-to browser on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, you’d want to keep it spiffy and fast. You’ll need to purge all the website data and cookies it has accumulated over time.

When Safari takes a little more while to open web pages or shows up a mangled web page, it’s time to dump the old cache and cookies. Clearing this data is different for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. This guide will show you how to clear cache and cookies in Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Why Should You Clear Cache and Cookies From Safari

Every browser stores website cache and cookies to make the experience of that particular site faster and more convenient – be it your favorite social media site or work portal. For instance, if you visit Facebook or Twitter often,  those sites would open quickly on Safari compared to a new site you’d visit for the first time.

Cache and cookies on Safari

That faster loading experience happens because Safari stores the cookies to log you in quickly and cache the website elements to load faster. That seems very helpful. Over time, Safari’s data of websites become old, and you might experience a delay or the site asking you to log in again. It may not even load properly till you clear the cache. While you may find it odd, cached data can also take up considerable storage on your phone and computer over time.

Cookies help websites keep a tab on your browsing patterns, store your preferences, and even help you to log into sites quickly. At times, you might see ads very specific to your browsing activity. Some may consider this to be a breach of their privacy. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep purging cookies regularly.

Remember that removing cache and cookies might make you feel that Safari has slowed down. When Safari collects enough fresh cache and data, it’ll deliver the usual browsing experience.

How to Clear Cache and Cookies in Safari on Mac

By default, many Mac users prefer Safari and often don’t want to clean up the cache and cookies. However, Apple makes it very easy to do that and also customize Safari on Mac to suit your usage. Here’s how to clear cache and cookies in Safari on Mac.

Step 1:  Open Safari on your Mac.

Step 7:  Select the Empty Caches option.

That will immediately clear Safari’s cache from your Mac. Continue to clear up the cookies too.

Step 8: Click on the Safari tab at the top of the menu bar.

Step 9: Select the Preferences option.

Step 10: Navigate to the Privacy tab.

The macOS will remove all the cookies in Safari on your Mac. However, that will make browsing inconvenient, and you’ll need to log in to your favorite sites manually.

If you also use another browser on your Mac, you can check our guides on how to clear the cache on Google Chrome and clear cache and cookies on Microsoft Edge .

How to Clear Cache and Cookies in Safari on iPhone and iPad

The steps to clear Safari cache and cookies on both an iPhone and an iPad are the same. While they both might offer different operating systems, Safari still follows the same routine for saving browser cache and cookies.

Troubleshooting, how to clear cache on iphone & ipad safari.

How to clear cache in Safari on iPhone & iPad

Caches can take up storage space on iPhone and iPad, and if you spend a lot of time using Safari on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you may discover that caches have accrued considerably over time and wish to clear them out.

Additionally, systems administrators, web developers, web designers, and other web workers and IT staff may need to manually clear caches from Safari on iPhone and iPad for various testing purposes.

The following article details how you can clear cache, cookies, browsing data, and history from Safari on iPhone and iPad.

How to Clear Cache in Safari on iPhone & iPad

It’s important to point out that when you clear cache from an iPhone or iPad, other devices using the same iCloud account will also clear their Safari browsing history. For example, if you clear history on your iPhone, the history will also be cleared from your iPad. There is no way around that limitation regarding cache clearing and web data removal.

  • Open the “Settings” app on iPhone or iPad

iOS Settings Icon

  • Scroll down to “Safari” and choose that

  • Navigate down in Safari settings to tap on “Clear History and Website Data”

How to clear cache from Safari on iPhone or iPad

All caches, Safari browsing data, cookies, and browsing history will have been removed from the iPhone or iPad, as well as any other synced device with iCloud.

Earlier versions of iOS allowed more specific controls for specifically deleting caches, clearing only cookies, and clearing only browser history, but modern iOS and iPadOS versions have simplified this procedure into a single option.

This obviously covers the Safari browser, but if you use other mobile browsers in iOS and iPadOS you can typically clear caches from them too, albeit with different processes. For example, clearing cache from Chrome on iOS and iPadOS . Or if you use a browser like Firefox Focus, the caches and web data will clear automatically every time you quit the app, a bit like a permanent Incognito Mode.

You also might be wondering about clearing caches from other specific applications beyond Safari and web browsers, which is a valid curiosity. It turns out that many apps have built-in cache clearing mechanisms for manually removing that type of data, but many others don’t. One of the most effective ways to clear out an applications cache from iPhone or iPad is to delete the apps “Documents and Data” from iPhone or iPad by essentially removing the application and then downloading it again – doing so will remove all app data as well however, including login information, so keep that in mind if you go that route.

nice article. would also be nice to have a similar one about how to clear the preview app cache on mac.

According to our friends at Apple, clearing ones cache on a iPad or phone means exchanging that for a more costly device.

I read that to clear the cache on an iPad, you press the power button down until ‘Slide to power off’ appears. Then release the power button, and press the Home button until the Home screen appears. It takes a few seconds. I forget exactly where I read it, but I’m pretty sure it was a well known/mainstream site. Cnet maybe? I forget.

That likely dumps anything cached in RAM if anything, but it would not clear cache from Safari or other apps. Things are held in RAM temporarily as they’re being accessed or used by the OS, so perhaps that’s what it would clear though I don’t know of strong evidence to support that.

That same sequence used to be the method to force quit an app, long ago anyway.

I can’t really speak for Luiz; but I suspect that he/she might have preferred “How to Remove Safari History and all Website Data from an iPhone or iPad”. I didn’t find the title misleading & you did explain very clearly that this would affect all devices signed into the same iCloud account (including any Macs, I presume).

Why does the category ‘other’ always take up more space than anything else? How does one delete ‘other’?

I followed these instructions on my iPad and the cache was indeed cleared as was the safari history. However, even though my iPhone shares the same iCloud account & Apple ID neither the cache nor the history were cleared from this device.

I would say your previously published article had the right title: https://osxdaily.com/2011/05/16/clear-history-cache-and-cookies-from-safari-browser-on-your-iphone-ipad/

Also, if I do not sync Safari in iCloud I don’t believe clearing data from one device will clear data from all devices.

I have a large accumulation of time invested in cookies that would need recreating for each site. Apple needs to fix this to be able to preserve cookies. They’re also tiny.

How to find out where and when this was all set up and who done this and there location ..this has really upset me and my family we have no iphone or iPad and don’t do business with AT&T .

Tapp the book icon in Safari, select History and than delete. It does the same.

That is what I do every time I close out of Safari. I don’t like what feels like privacy invasion by keeping the history, cache, & cookies in Safari. Also prevents all that info from taking up a lot of storage space.

Please give this article THE RIGHT TITLE, since it is IMPOSSIBLE to clear only the cache separately without deleting everything else all together.

This is how you can clear cache on iPhone and iPad, what is the issue or the right title in your opinion?

The deletions are not limited to caches (which serve only to save time).

The title should be “How to Clear History and Data” since more that caches are deleted.

Introduction

Safari, the default web browser on Apple devices, is a gateway to the vast expanse of the internet. As you browse the web on your iPad, Safari accumulates a cache of temporary files, cookies, and other data to enhance your browsing experience. While this cache can improve loading times and streamline your online activities, it can also lead to issues such as slow performance, unresponsive web pages, or even privacy concerns. Therefore, it's essential to understand how to clear the Safari cache on your iPad to ensure a smooth and secure browsing experience.

In this article, we will delve into the reasons why clearing the Safari cache on your iPad is crucial, and we will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish this task. Additionally, we will explore an alternative method for clearing the Safari cache through the iPad's settings. By the end of this guide, you will have the knowledge and tools to effectively manage your Safari cache, optimizing your browsing experience and safeguarding your privacy and security.

Why Clear Safari Cache on iPad

Clearing the Safari cache on your iPad is essential for several reasons, each contributing to a smoother and more secure browsing experience. Here's why you should consider clearing the Safari cache on your iPad:

Free Up Storage Space : Over time, the Safari cache accumulates a significant amount of temporary files, cookies, and browsing history. This can consume a considerable portion of your iPad's storage capacity. By clearing the cache, you can free up valuable space, allowing your device to operate more efficiently and store essential data without unnecessary clutter.

Enhance Performance : A bloated cache can impact the performance of Safari and your iPad as a whole. Clearing the cache can help improve the browser's speed and responsiveness, resulting in faster page loading times and smoother navigation. This is particularly beneficial if you've noticed a decline in Safari's performance or if web pages are taking longer to load than usual.

Resolve Website Issues : In some instances, an outdated or corrupted cache can lead to issues when accessing certain websites. Clearing the cache can resolve these problems by ensuring that Safari fetches the latest versions of web pages and eliminates any conflicts caused by outdated data stored in the cache.

Protect Privacy : The Safari cache stores a wealth of browsing data, including cookies, site data, and browsing history. While this data can enhance your browsing experience by remembering preferences and login information, it also poses privacy risks. Clearing the cache helps safeguard your privacy by removing potentially sensitive information that could be accessed by unauthorized parties.

Troubleshoot Browser Problems : If you encounter persistent issues with Safari, such as frequent crashes, unresponsive pages, or erratic behavior, clearing the cache can serve as a troubleshooting step. By eliminating cached data that may be contributing to these problems, you can potentially resolve technical issues and restore the browser to optimal functionality.

By understanding the importance of clearing the Safari cache on your iPad, you can proactively manage your browsing environment, optimize performance, and protect your privacy. In the following sections, we will explore the step-by-step process of clearing the Safari cache on your iPad, empowering you to take control of your browsing experience.

Steps to Clear Safari Cache on iPad

Clearing the Safari cache on your iPad is a straightforward process that can be accomplished directly within the Safari app settings. Follow these simple steps to clear the cache and optimize your browsing experience:

Open Safari : Begin by unlocking your iPad and locating the Safari icon on your home screen. Tap the Safari icon to launch the browser.

Access Settings : Once Safari is open, navigate to the settings menu by tapping the "Settings" icon on your iPad's home screen. This will allow you to access the settings specific to the Safari browser.

Clear History and Website Data : Within the Settings menu, scroll down and locate "Safari" in the list of apps. Tap on "Safari" to access its settings. Next, scroll down again and tap on "Clear History and Website Data." A confirmation prompt will appear, asking if you want to clear your browsing history and cookies. Tap "Clear History and Data" to proceed.

Confirmation : After tapping "Clear History and Data," Safari will promptly clear the cache, cookies, and browsing history associated with the browser. This process may take a few moments, depending on the amount of data being cleared.

Return to Safari : Once the cache has been cleared, you can return to the Safari app by pressing the home button on your iPad or using the multitasking gesture to switch back to the browser.

By following these steps, you have successfully cleared the Safari cache on your iPad, freeing up storage space, enhancing performance, and protecting your privacy. It's important to note that clearing the cache will log you out of any websites for which you were previously logged in, and it will also remove any stored website data, such as preferences or settings. However, this action can significantly improve the overall functionality of Safari and contribute to a more seamless browsing experience.

In addition to the steps outlined above, it's beneficial to periodically clear the Safari cache to maintain optimal performance and privacy. By incorporating this practice into your routine, you can ensure that your browsing environment remains efficient, secure, and free from unnecessary clutter.

With the Safari cache now cleared on your iPad, you can enjoy a refreshed browsing experience, free from the accumulated data that may have been hindering performance and compromising privacy.

Alternative Method: Clearing Safari Cache through Settings

In addition to clearing the Safari cache directly within the Safari app, there is an alternative method to accomplish this task through the settings of your iPad. This method provides an alternative pathway to efficiently manage the cache and browsing data associated with the Safari browser. Here's how you can clear the Safari cache through the settings on your iPad:

Access iPad Settings : Begin by unlocking your iPad and locating the "Settings" app on the home screen. The Settings app is represented by a gear icon and serves as the central hub for configuring various aspects of your device.

Navigate to Safari Settings : Within the Settings app, scroll down and locate "Safari" in the list of options. Tap on "Safari" to access its specific settings and preferences.

Clear Safari Cache : Within the Safari settings, scroll down to find the "Clear History and Website Data" option. This option provides a convenient way to clear the cache, browsing history, and website data associated with the Safari browser.

Confirmation Prompt : Upon tapping "Clear History and Website Data," a confirmation prompt will appear, asking if you want to proceed with clearing the browsing history and data. Confirm the action by tapping "Clear History and Data."

Cache Clearance : The iPad will promptly clear the Safari cache, cookies, and browsing history associated with the browser. Depending on the amount of data being cleared, this process may take a few moments to complete.

By utilizing this alternative method to clear the Safari cache through the settings of your iPad, you can efficiently manage the browsing data stored within the Safari browser. This approach offers a streamlined pathway to maintain optimal performance, free up storage space, and protect your privacy while navigating the digital landscape.

It's important to note that clearing the Safari cache through the settings will have the same impact as clearing it directly within the Safari app. This action will log you out of any websites for which you were previously logged in and remove any stored website data. However, it will contribute to a more efficient and secure browsing experience, ensuring that your Safari browser operates at its best.

With the alternative method for clearing the Safari cache through the settings of your iPad, you have gained an additional tool to proactively manage your browsing environment, further enhancing the performance and privacy of your Safari browsing experience.

In conclusion, the Safari cache plays a pivotal role in shaping your browsing experience on the iPad. While it serves the purpose of enhancing performance and streamlining web activities, the accumulation of temporary files, cookies, and browsing history can lead to storage constraints, sluggish performance, and potential privacy risks. By understanding the importance of clearing the Safari cache and following the step-by-step methods outlined in this guide, you have the power to proactively manage your browsing environment, optimize performance, and safeguard your privacy.

Clearing the Safari cache on your iPad offers a multitude of benefits, including the liberation of valuable storage space, the enhancement of browsing performance, the resolution of website issues, the protection of privacy, and the troubleshooting of browser problems. By periodically clearing the cache, you can ensure that your Safari browser operates at its best, delivering a seamless and secure browsing experience.

Whether you choose to clear the Safari cache directly within the Safari app or through the settings of your iPad, the process is straightforward and yields significant improvements in the functionality of the browser. By incorporating cache clearance into your routine maintenance practices, you can maintain an efficient and secure browsing environment, free from the clutter of outdated data and potential privacy vulnerabilities.

As you navigate the digital landscape on your iPad, the proactive management of the Safari cache empowers you to take control of your browsing experience, ensuring that performance remains optimal and privacy remains protected. With the knowledge and tools acquired from this guide, you are well-equipped to clear the Safari cache on your iPad, paving the way for a refreshed and revitalized browsing experience.

In essence, by clearing the Safari cache on your iPad, you are not only reclaiming valuable storage space and enhancing performance but also actively contributing to the preservation of your privacy and the seamless functionality of the Safari browser. Embrace the practice of clearing the Safari cache as a proactive step in maintaining a secure and efficient browsing environment, allowing you to explore the boundless realms of the internet with confidence and peace of mind.

How to Clear Cache on iPad: Three Most Popular Browsers

Nick deCourville

There eventually comes a time when a user will need to clear the cache on their iPad. If you find that websites are loading a bit slower than you’re used to, or you simply need a quick way of troubleshooting a small issue, clearing the cache may just be what you need. Oftentimes, clearing the cache can be the solution to some rather minor problems that a user may be experiencing.

With that in mind, I’m going to show you how to clear the cache on your iPad via three of the most popular internet browsers.

Why Should I Clear the Cache on My iPad?

No matter what device you are using, clearing out your cache can be a great idea. Not only does clearing your cache remove browser history and recent searches, but it all takes care of cookies and permissions that you’ve given to individual websites. Whenever you visit a website, it may store some temporary data to provide a faster experience. Though, this data can eventually build up on your device over time.

One thing users may want to remember, however, is that deleting your browsing history on your iPad will not delete browsing history that is stored independently on websites that a user may visit. It also does not delete the browsing history in other apps.

Users should also know that they may need to sign in to certain websites again. Furthermore, some websites may take longer to load, as it will require redownloading certain images. With that in mind, I’m going to take a look at some of the more popular browsers available for the iPad and show you how to clear your cache.

Cache files are data created by various websites and apps to store information and reuse them for different purposes. We advise using a comprehensive cleaning tool to help you delete your traces.

Intego Washing Machine is our go-to solution because it will empty your cache files, build-ups, and all sorts of unnecessary files, increasing its health within a few moments.

Clear cache using safari.

Starting with Safari can often be a popular choice for users, as it is the browser that arrives natively with iPadOS.

To clear your browsing history, simply follow these steps:

  • Go to the Safari app, and click the button that looks like a table. If you are using an older version of Safari, it may look like a book.
  • Select History (should look like a clock), and then select Clear.

browser cache leeren safari ipad

While under History, you can also delete cache for individual websites by sliding left on the website and selecting Delete.

We think you might also be interested in how to clear browser cache on Mac for Chrome, Firefox and Safari .

Through Google Chrome

Of course, there’s also Google’s popular browser Chrome. This can be a popular alternative for some iPad users, especially if you like to use Gmail. However, users should note that deleting cache from Chrome may sign you out of your Google account. Users should keep their password handy before clearing the cache from this browser.

To clear your cache in Chrome on your iPad, simply follow these steps:

  • Open the Chrome app from your iPad.

browser cache leeren safari ipad

  • Go to History > Clear Browsing Data.

Using Mozilla Firefox

The last browser that I want to take a look at is Firefox. A popular alternative for both Apple and Windows users, the browser has been incredibly popular for a while now. Additionally, Firefox also provides a few more options when it comes to clearing your cache.

Time needed:  1 minute

Follow these steps to clear the cache in Mozilla Firefox on your iPad.

Firefox also allows you to delete the history of specific websites. While looking at your most recently visited websites, simply swipe left on a website, and the Delete option will appear. Click this icon to delete the history of a specific website.

Making the Clean Sweep

Clearing your cache at least once a month can be a good idea, especially if you visit a large number of websites. If you use a browser outside of these three, it’s also a good idea to remember that you can likely find the option to clear the cache somewhere within the History section of the browser.

When you use your iPad to traverse the web, it’s usually smart thinking to clear your cache every so often. Once a cache grows too large, it can really bog down your experience. Of course, when it comes to the iPad, there are a lot of other little things users might not know they can do. This includes keeping an iPad from sleeping , as well as using it as a second monitor either on Mac or Windows .

If you store cache files, your iPad runs faster and you can access some of the app’s files offline. Better still, it saves cellular data because your iPad doesn’t always have to fetch data from the server. However, the cache files use up your internal storage space, causing you to run out of space regularly.

How to Clear the Cache for Apps on an iPad

This article explains how to clear cache on iPad apps.

How to Clear the Cache on iPad Apps

Unless you manually clear your apps’ cache, it remains on your device. If you have overzealous apps, they might populate your internal storage space with cache files and, in turn, make your device slow and sluggish.

Sometimes, the stored cache gets corrupted, affecting an app’s normal functioning to the point of crashing. Other times, the cached data becomes outdated, causing the app to display old information.

As a result, clearing your iPad apps cache app regularly is crucial. After all, if you open the app after clearing its temporary files, your iPad will cache its data again.

Clearing Cache on iPad Browsing Apps

Your iPad web browsers might be among the apps that store a lot of the cache on your iPad. For every website you visit, your iPad stores its cookies and cache.

Here’s how you clear cache on your Safari browser:

browser cache leeren safari ipad

  • To delete an individual cache file, hover over it and “Swipe to the left.” Tap the red “Delete button” to the right.
  • To delete all the browser cache files in one go, tap “Remove all website data.” Clearing cache on your Safari iPad app removes data for other synced devices.

For Google Chrome browser, use these steps:

browser cache leeren safari ipad

Clearing Cache for Individual iPad App

Clearing cache using this method gives you two options: to offload the app or to delete it. Offloading removes an app from your iPad but retains your stored data and documents. When you reinstall the app, you get a clean slate with your data without cache files.

Conversely, the delete option deletes the app and all the associated information. If you reinstall the app, you won’t recover your data.

To clear cache using this method, do the following:

browser cache leeren safari ipad

The downside of using this method is that some apps, like the Photos app, don’t have the option to offload or delete to clear cache. You must go to the app and manually delete the files you no longer use.

Clearing iPad Apps Cache Using the Home Button

You might find using the home button appropriate if you don’t want to go through the tedious process of uninstalling and reinstalling your apps to clear cache.

browser cache leeren safari ipad

  • Let go of the power button and press the “Home button” to the left of your iPad until the app restarts. This clears the app’s cache.

If you’re using a device without a home button, use these steps to clear cache:

browser cache leeren safari ipad

  • Long press the “AssistiveTouch” icon (the home button) until your iPad screen blackens and flashes white.

browser cache leeren safari ipad

Clearing Cache for Third-Party Apps on iPad

Unlike iPad’s preinstalled apps, most third-party apps have cache option on their storage settings. To clear cache for these apps, do the following:

browser cache leeren safari ipad

  • Select “Manage storage” and select “Clear cache.”

Clearing Cache on iPad Using Third-Party Tools

You might have noticed there’s no way to clear cache on iPad all at once. This might be inconvenient if your device is out of space and you don’t have the time to go through each app to clear cache. Luckily, you can use third-party tools on your Mac or Windows to clear your iPad app cache at once.

Examples of third-party cache cleaning tools include iFreeUp and PanFone iOS Eraser . iFreeUp is appropriate for iPad users who run Windows PC. PanFone iOS eraser, on the other hand, supports Mac and Windows. These third-party tools work similarly.

Here’s how you clear cache on your iPad using the PanFone iOS Eraser app:

browser cache leeren safari ipad

  • Use a USB cable to connect your iPad to your PC.
  • Select the “Free up space” icon in the top left corner of the sidebar. Select “Quick scan” on the main screen.
  • The scan takes a few minutes, after which it displays the space used by junk files.
  • Navigate to the bottom right of the screen and select “Clean.” Give the app some time to clear the cache files. Repeat the process to ensure you’ve removed all the junk files.

Free-Up Your iPad

If you use your iPad every day, it’s inevitable that you’ll accumulate cache files which, if they remain uncleared, will cause your device to lag and run out of space. Though cache files are useful to your device, deleting them with any of the above methods will benefit your device’s performance.

How often do you clear cache on your iPad? Do you wish iPad had a way of clearing cache without uninstalling apps? Let us know in the comments section below.
