The first mention of the family is from 1675 and includes the felucca Giovannina, which for many years sailed around the Sorrento Peninsula.

In 1970, Gianluigi Aponte borrowed money and founded MSC with the acquisition of Patricia, his first ship, followed by Rafaela. He began a route between Somalia and the Mediterranean.

The rumour was that MSC would carry anything that the rest of the maritime transport industry found difficult to carry.

According to Forbes Gianluigi Aponte, as of 14 June 2021, is worth USD 11.4 Billion.

MSC Cruises history in more detail

Founded in Naples, Italy with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, MSC Cruises is part of the MSC Group, incorporating the cargo side, which is the second-largest container shipping enterprise worldwide.

1988 - Start of the passenger cruise business

MSC bought the liner Monterey.

A year later, MSC took over the Lauro Cruise Line, which was only a one-ship cruise line with the Achille Lauro.

The newly formed company took the name of StarLauro in honour of Mr Lauro, Aponte's mentor and founder of Lauro Cruise Line.

The cruise fleet of StarLauro remained at two until December 1994 when the Achille Lauro caught fire and sank off the coast of Somalia on her way to South Africa.

1995 - StarLauro Cruises was renamed MSC Cruises

In 1995 StarLauro acquired the Cunard Princess and renamed it the MSC Rhapsody. The same year saw the purchase of MSC Symphony.

At the same time, MSC Cruises was formally founded as a subsidiary of MSC Cargo.

In 1997 the Melody joined the fleet to bring the capacity of MSC Cruises to 4 ships.

2003 - Beginning of modern MSC Cruises

In 2003, with the arrival of Pierfrancesco Vago at the helm of MSC Cruises, the liner started a € 5.5 billion investment program to build the world's most modern cruise fleet.

MSC Cruises commissioned Les Chantiers de L'Atlantique for their first new build. The MSC Lirica , a 1,445 passenger ship / 721 crew members was launched in April 2003, followed by her sister ship MSC Opera in 2004.

The MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia both Lirica class ships and sisters to MSC Lirica, were purchased from Festival Cruises in early 2004 when the cruise line went bankrupt.

MSC was now operating 8 cruise ships with a focus on the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, South America and South Africa.

Part of its €5.5 billion investment plan was the build of new MSC class liners - Musica Class and Fantasia Class.

The Musica class ships have a higher number of balcony and suites compared to the Lirica class. With an average of 2,550 passengers, this class brought about the launch of the MSC Musica (2007), MSC Orchestra (2007), MSC Poesia (2008) and MSC Magnifica (2010).

The Fantasia class ships have an even higher number of passengers than the Musica class vessels. With 3,300 guests, there are 4 ships in this class - MSC Fantasia (2008), MSC Splendida (2009), MSC Divina (2012) and MSC Preziosa (2013).

In 2013, MSC Cruises' CEO, Vago, stepped aside to become Chairman to let Gianni Onorato take over as CEO.

2013 was also the first time that the global cruise line brand would target the North American market by deploying the MSC Divina out of Miami.

The North American market was much trickier to conquer than MSC thought. They came in with the same value proposition as they had in Europe and the beginning of the season was hard.

They made a lot of adjustments for the US market, especially with the entertainment and the food. This finally ended up resulting in a success.

MSC Cruises History: A Timeline

So how did MSC Cruises get to where they are today? Discover the fascinating journey of MSC Cruises throughout the years in the timeline below.

The Aponte family have been in the shipping business for many years, and after experiencing the industry while growing up, Gianluigi Aponte decided to establish the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in Brussels at the age of 30. The company was set up to introduce new shipping routes and would have much bigger cargo ships than most other shipping companies at the time.

Aponte acquired his first cargo ship, Patricia, that same year and set out to carve his own space in the overseas shipping industry. Shortly after, a second ship – named Rafaela after his wife – was added to the fleet. He began sending the ships on a new route between Somalia and the Mediterranean.

Aponte officially moved his shipping company to Geneva, Switzerland where it has stayed ever since.

MSC stormed into the cruise market in 1988 when it purchased two liners from Lauro Lines. Aponte named one MSC-Starlauro and retained the name of the other which was the Achille Lauro. This marked the beginning of a new era for the cruise industry, with MSC dominating the field. A year later, MSC bought Lauro Lines.

MSC Cruises was established in 2002 when it became a subsidiary of the MSC Group.

Since then, MSC Cruises has become the third-biggest cruise line worldwide, with a fleet of over 19 ships including those acquired from Lauro Lines.

Pierfrancesco Vago was appointed CEO of MSC Cruises, and the company launched an ambitious €5.5 billion investment program to build the world’s most modern cruise fleet. The plan to reach a 12-ship fleet within 10 years was unrivalled by any other cruise line competitor. Les Chantiers de L’Atlantique, one of the world’s biggest shipyards located in Saint Nazaire, France, was commissioned for its first new build.

Part of its €5.5 billion investment plan was the build of new MSC class liners – Musica Class and Fantasia Class. MSC Lirica , a 1,445-passenger-capacity ship with 721 crew members was also launched in April 2003.

MSC Lirica’s sister ship – MSC Opera – followed closely by in production, being built the following year. The liner carries 2,679 passengers with a crew of around 728 members.

MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia , both Lirica Class ships and sister ships to the MSC Lirica were purchased from Festival Cruises in early 2004 when the cruise line went bankrupt. So by the end of 2004, MSC Cruises was operating 8 cruise ships sailing around the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, South America and South Africa.

Who owns MSC Cruises? The History behind the foundation

MSC Cruises:  MSC Cruises was first established in 1989 in Naples, Italy, and is currently based in Geneva, Switzerland. With 19 cruise ships in its fleet, it has over 30,000 employees. Based on these figures, this company is among the fastest-growing cruise brands in the world. We go into great detail about the history and ownership of MSC Cruises.

MSC Cruises offers opulent cabins that complement an elegant and tranquil onboard experience. It is mostly renowned for its warm European welcome. With an average age of 45, it draws a significantly younger clientele than other cruise lines, where the average age is 46.

Up until recently, the majority of MSC Cruises’ clientele came from Europe, specifically from Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

MSC Yacht Club is the pinnacle of MSC Cruises’ series of luxurious cruise ships, which are meant to entice affluent travelers. There is a café, sun lounges, a VIP lounge, and a pool at the MSC Yacht Club. They also have a butler on duty around the clock and a personal concierge.

To open a presence in North America, they increased their fleet size in 2017. They used to have just one ship in North America. Currently, nevertheless, they operate three MSC cruise ships out of ports in the United States.

Large, resort-style MSC cruise ships are currently being built to accommodate the needs of the North American market. They offer a variety of entertainment options, such as massive waterparks and race car simulators.

What’s MSC all about?

In MSC Cruises, the letters “MSC” stand for “Mediterranean Shipping Company.” They are a part of the MSC Group, which runs one of the biggest shipping firms globally.

Who owns MSC Cruises?

MSC Cruises to Begin Sailing from Texas in 2025

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) owns MSC Cruises. In the container transportation industry, they have the second-largest business position. They are the owners of 570 cargo ships. The divisions of Mediterranean Shipping Company are as follows:

The Founder

Gianluigi Aponte, Founder of MSC cruises

Along with his family—son Diego, daughter Alexa, and wife Rafaela— Gianluigi Aponte is the owner of MSC Cruises. Aponte, the owner, creator, and chairman of MSC, is an Italian millionaire. His family plays an important part in the operation of the company.

With a combined net worth of $13.2 billion, Gianluigi and Rafaela Aponte rank among the richest couples in the shipping business. They rank 126th among the world’s wealthiest people, according to other sources.

Born on June 27, 1940, Gianluigi was the owner of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, the organization that founded MSC Cruises. MSC is in charge of operating 510 cargo ships.

In 1970, Gianluigi joined his wife in the maritime sector, having previously served as a ship captain. Since then, MSC has expanded to rank second in the world’s shipping industry behind AP Moller Maersk in terms of vessel capacity.

After Carnival Corporation, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and Royal Caribbean Group, they are the fourth-largest cruise line. In 2014, Gianluigi stepped down as MSC’s CEO and was appointed chairman. His son Diego succeeded his father in the post.

Is MSC Cruises a publicly or privately owned company?

Other cruise lines are owned by shareholders and are listed on public markets. The Aponte family, on the other hand, is the private owner of MSC Cruises, one of the biggest cruise lines in the world.

The corporation does not have stock because it is privately held. In contrast to Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line, investors cannot purchase shares in this corporation.

Gianni Onorato is the company’s current CEO. Having previously served as president of Costa Cruises since 2013, Gianni Onorato has thirty years of expertise in the cruise ship sector.

MSC Cruises History

MSC Cruises

The Aponte family was active in the maritime business long before MSC Cruises was established in 1989.

Their connection in shipping into and out of Naples, Italy, is first documented in 1675. Among the vessels involved in this activity was the felucca Giovannina, which spent many years circling the Sorrento Peninsula.

1970 saw the birth of the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s cargo section as Gianluigi took out a loan to purchase his first ship, the Patricia, followed by the Rafaela. Gianluigi established the first route that connected Somalia with the Mediterranean.

The Best Spring Break Cruises for College Students

After acquiring Lauro Lines in 1989, MSC rebranded the two ships, Achille Lauro and Monterey, as StarLauro Cruises. Achille Lauro founded Lauro Lines in the 1960s. The MS Achille Lauro and MS Angelina Lauro were put into service. Aponte received mentoring from Mr. Lauro. This was the inaugural cruise line for MSC.

In 1979, the U.S. Virgin Islands’ St. Thomas pier saw the sinking of the Angelina Lauro. This incident put the business, which was then called Lauro Lines, in financial jeopardy. Up to December 1994, when Achille Lauro caught fire, the fleet consisted of just two ships. On its way to South Africa, it sank off the coast of Somalia. Due to its financial difficulties, the business was open to MSC’s acquisition.

The cruise line once again changed its name to MSC Cruises in 1995. They purchased the Cunard Princess and renamed it MSC Rhapsody in the same year. They bought MSC Symphony as well. In 1997, Melody became a part of MSC Cruises, expanding the company’s fleet to four cruise ships.

To create the most up-to-date fleet, the business spent 5.5 billion euros building 12 new cruise ships fifteen years later. They once again invested 5.1 billion euros in 2014 to expand four already-existing ships and buy seven new ones.

They paid 2.6 billion euros for three more world-class ships the following year, after investing 3.9 billion euros for four ships two years earlier. MSC Cruises declared last year that it would build a second cruise terminal in Miami just for these ships. It will be an extension of their North American program, which is now anticipated to be finished in December 2023 after initially being scheduled for completion in 2022.

Subsequently, MSC revealed that they had procured four opulent vessels, each weighing 64,000 gross tons. These cruise lines were to operate ultra-luxury ships that were modeled around MSC Yacht Club’s luxurious offerings. In the spring of 2023, the first of these ships is scheduled to launch.

MSC Seashore

A hundred-year lease on the island known as Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve began in 2019. That year, they announced the launch of ZOE, the first virtual cruise assistant, and launched for business. Harman International is the company that created this artificial intelligence device, which is present on the MSC Grandiosa and MSC Bellissima. Once delivered, it will also be included in further builds.

Because of their industry-leading health and safety measures, MSC Cruises was the first major cruise company to resume operations following the pandemic in 2020.

MSC declared in January 2021 that MSC Magnifica would resume ten-night voyages in February and that MSC Grandiosa would start seven-night trips in January. Only Schengen nations were permitted to take one of the two Mediterranean cruises.

Early in June, MSC announced that it was launching four ships under the luxury brand Explora Journeys. Additionally, they presented Rob, the first robotic bartender discovered at sea. It was shown aboard the MSC Virtuosa.

With its main office located in Geneva, MSC Cruises is a company registered in Switzerland. Its operations offices are located in Naples, Genoa, and Venice. The company offers cruises to a variety of countries on a global basis. As a result, while visitors are on board, many different languages are spoken. There are often announcements in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian.

They just inked an agreement to become an official cruise partner of Formula 1 that will last for several years. They are now constructing four mega-ships with a combined weight of 200,000 tons as part of a massive expansion. 6,761 passengers will travel on each of these ships.

Later this decade, MSC Cruises plans to launch a new class of large ships and several smaller luxury cruise lines run by independent subsidiaries. Entertainment on board is primarily focused on visuals, such as dancers, acrobats, or music.

What Are the Destinations of MSC Cruises?

MSC Cruises

The MSC group, the largest cruise operator in Europe, is primarily focused in Europe even though it operates throughout the world. The majority of their ships are deployed in the Mediterranean or Northern Europe in the summer. They have recently operated two ships from Florida to the Bahamas and the Caribbean during the summer.

More ships are added to the Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries throughout the winter. There are also intentions to send a fifth ship, but only four will be deployed to South America. Ships are also sent to South Africa and the Middle East.

Facts about MSC

When MSC Lirica was first launched in 2003, Sophia Loren was asked if she would be interested in serving as its godmother. She went on to name every navy ship until the MSC Virtuosa since then.

Unfortunately, Zoe Vago, Aponte’s granddaughter, was christened MSC World Europa and MSC Virtuosa instead of her due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Cargo Business

After Maersk, MSC Group is the world’s second-largest shipping firm. They have about 150,000 employees worldwide and operate over 730 cargo ships.

The organization runs a global network of logistics and transportation that reaches 155 countries via more than 260 routes.

Twenty-foot equivalent units, or 23 million TEU, are estimated to be delivered yearly by the corporation.

The cargo division also includes MEDLOG, an independent logistics operator that specializes in multimodal transportation (road, rail, barge, and ocean services), and Terminal Investments Limited, which invests in, builds, and maintains container terminals.

MSC Cruises’ owner is who? The Aponte family still proudly owns the cruise line, and members of their family hold various positions within the company. With a fascinating track record of expansion and achievement, it is currently the fourth-largest cruise fleet worldwide.

MSC Cruises - Cruise Line Profile

msc cruise line history

The Aponte family of Italy privately owns MSC Cruises. The cruise line primarily attracts Europeans but also markets extensively to mainstream North American cruise travelers. The MSC Divina sails to the Caribbean year-round from Miami and most of the passengers are from North America. In December 2017, the new MSC Seaside arrived in Miami from the shipyard and joins the Divina in sailing from Miami year-round.

MSC features large resort-style ships that sail over 1,000 routes around the world -- the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, South Africa, and South America.

The days and nights on the ships are filled with excitement and non-stop action. Due to the many nationalities (and many languages) represented onboard, the ships usually do not have enrichment lecturers and focus more on family and adult entertainment and activities.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is one of the world's youngest cruise lines. MSC Cruises currently has 13 ships, most added in the past decade. The company is adding three new ships over the next two years--MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview, and MSC Bellissima. The cruise line aims to have the world's youngest fleet and to have over one million berths available for bookings each year.

This young MSC fleet is modern and sophisticated, with a reputation for having some of the cleanest ships at sea.

Innovations on the newest MSC ships include the MSC Yacht Club, a marvelous "ship within a ship" area for those passengers in the Yacht Club cabins.

History and Background of MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is the largest privately-owned cruise line in Europe. Its main office is in Geneva, Switzerland and the cruise line has many more offices worldwide, including its North American marketing office in Fort Lauderdale.

The parent company of MSC Cruises is Mediterranean Shipping Company, the world's second-largest container shipping company. I'm sure anyone who sails often has seen those ubiquitous contains with MSC on them. Mediterranean Shipping Company got into the cruise line business in 1987 and adopted the name Mediterranean Shipping Cruises in 2001. In 2004, the line officially became MSC Cruises and has grown rapidly since then, spending over 5.5 billion Euros to expand the fleet.

Passenger Profile

MSC cruise ships have a decidedly European, cosmopolitan feel, and are best suited for couples and families with children. Kids under 17 sharing a cabin with two adults sail free on all MSC sailings, so expect to see a lot of children during school holidays.

MSC markets to numerous nationalities and many cultures and languages are represented onboard. This diverse group of passengers can be exciting and interesting for some, but turn others off who are more accustomed to North American ships. For example, more items (such as room service) are a la carte on MSC ships, and more passengers smoke.

Cruises Cabins

The MSC ships have most of their cabins on the outside, and many of those have balconies. MSC introduced a new concept on the MSC Fantasia class ships -- MSC Yacht Club Suites. These suites are concentrated in a private area on two decks and feature full butler service, a pool, an observation lounge, and other amenities. The two private deck areas in the MSC Yacht Club are connected with a crystal glass Swarovski staircase. Don't they sound like an excellent place for a memorable getaway cruise?

Cuisine and Dining

The MSC ships have either one or two main dining rooms with two seatings for dinner. Passengers can also have open seating breakfast and lunch in the dining rooms, which could be interesting (or awkward), depending on which languages your table mates speak. All the ships also have a nice Italian-theme specialty restaurant, and some of the newer ships have other specialty restaurants for an extra fee. Like most ships, MSC guests can also dine in a buffet-style restaurant for casual fare.

Onboard Activities and Entertainment

Like other large ship cruise lines, MSC Cruises features large production shows, with lots of colorful music and dancers. The ships also have small combos that provide live music in some of the lounges. The main theater on each vessel is large and has modern facilities and equipment equal to almost any theater venue found ashore.

Common Areas

Since MSC Cruises' ships are relatively new, they are modern in decor, with a European look -- understated elegance and quality furnishings. As would be expected, the ships have Italian influences in their interior design. All in all, the ships' decor works well and should be pleasing to most cruisers.

Spa, Gym, and Fitness

The MSC spas offer all of the exciting treatments found on other large cruise ships, ranging from massages to well-being body treatments to aromatherapy and thalassotherapy. The fitness centers are well equipped with all the latest equipment and classes such as Pilates, Tae-boo, aerobics, and Latin dancing.

The parent company (MSC Group) was founded and owned by its current Chairman Gianluigi Aponte (1940-born). Since 2014, the company's President and CEO is his son - Diego Aponte, while his daughter (Alexa Aponte Vago) is the CFO. MSC entered the ship cruising market in 1988. MSC also owns Going2Italy (1982-founded Italian tour operator).

Company History

Founded by Achille Lauro as "Lauro Lines" (aka Flotta Lauro), MSC entered the cruise shipping business in the 1960s. Initially, MSC operated two ships - Achille Lauro (IMO 5390008, launched as "Willem Ruys") and Angelina Lauro (IMO 5264077, launched as "Oranje"). Angelina Lauro (1939-1979) burnt in St Thomas USVI in 1979. Achille Lauro (1947-1994) sank off Somalia'scoast due to onboard fire.

In 1985, Achille Lauro was hijacked by Palestinian Liberation Front members, and the accident resulted in decreased passenger numbers. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) purchased Flotta Lauro in 1989, and renamed it "StarLauro Cruises". Achille Lauro caught fire and sank in 1994. In 1995, the company changed its name to "MSC Cruises". Fleet's oldest liner - the 1982-built MSC Melody - was sold in November 2013 and scrapped in September 2018 (as MS Qing).

In 2014, MSC announced that its four Lirica-class boats are scheduled for refits and extensive drydock refurbishments under the company's "Renaissance Program" (budgeted USD 273 million). By this project, all four vessels (Armonia, Lirica, Opera, Sinfonia) were stretched/elongated by 25 m (80 ft).

Ship-reconstruction works were done at Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo Sicily , between 2014 (August 31) and 2015 (November 17).

MSC cruise ship stretching (Armonia, Lirica, Opera, Sinfonia)

Since 2021, all MSC cruise ship refurbishment projects are conducted at Palumbo Malta Shipyard (co-owned by MSC / 50% stake). Palumbo Group's other shipyards are in France (Marseille) and Italy (Ancona, Naples, Savona).

Most of MSC's fleet operates in Europe (Mediterranean and Baltic). The company's other strong markets are the USA (Caribbean), Canada New England, East Asia, South America, South Africa. Because of the international passenger base, all shipboard announcements are generally read in Italian, Spanish, French, German and English. Onboard mealtimes are fixed, with assigned seatmates. Optional dining includes Lido buffet restaurant, sushi, and Italian eateries.

MSC liners offer standout evening show entertainment - from classical concerts and jazz to contemporary dance music and circus-type acrobatics. Voyages are typically priced at value-oriented levels, but the liners offer an unprecedented range of modern vacation travel amenities and services that cost extra, such as fees for port shuttle buses, a la carte restaurant menus, etc.

Company changes 2024

In January was announced that in November 2025 start year-round homeporting operations from Galveston TX (ship Seascape, 7-night roundtrips departing on Sundays). Also in January, MSC started homeporting in NYC New York (ship Meraviglia).

In mid-January, MSC Group moved its operational headquarters to Downtown Miami (Block 55 at Sawyer's Walk/Overtown). The new facility (130,000-ft2/12080-m2 sized office space) now houses the company's three divisions - MSC Cargo (container ships/logistics), MSC Cruises (passenger liners) and Explora Journeys (expedition ships).

In February as fleet's COO/Chief Operating Officer was appointed Elia Congiu (with MSC since 2013, previously Chief HR Officer/Human Resources).

In late-February was introduced the "Open Booking" program, allowing passengers on a current cruise to reserve a future cruise without committing to a specific vessel/itinerary/date. The initiative complements MSC's existing "Future Cruise" (onboard booking) program introduced in 2023. The new "Open Booking" option requires a reduced deposit payment (USD100/EUR100/GBP100 per person) while on board. The customer receives a certificate that allows up to 12 months period to choose the next MSC voyage. If the ship and departure date are selected within 60 days (of making the onboard open booking), the customer receives up to USD200/EUR200/GBP200 in OBC (onboard credit per stateroom). With a booking made within a year is received up to $100 in OBC. MSC's open booking is also transferable (can be gifted to a family/friend) before choosing the ship/departure date.

In February, on two ships (Virtuosa and Euribia) MSC banned smoking and vaping in the Casino (turning the gaming lounge into a smoke-free venue) while on two other ships (Seascape and Seashore) were added a separate smoking-allowed Casino Lounge.

Company changes 2023

In May MSC Foundation signed a partnership with NatureMetrics (provider of biodiversity monitoring data) for collecting data for marine species during voyages. By MSC's "eBioAtlas" project, the collected samples (from the seawater) are sent to NatureMetrics where they are analyzed using eDNA.

In June MSC signed a long-term agreement with Gasum Oy (1994-founded Finnish state-owned energy company) for the fleet's LNG bunkering operations in the Baltic. The deal was signed by Linden Coppell (MSC's VP of Sustainability & ESG/Environmental, Social and Governance) and Mika Wiljanen (Gasum's CEO).

MSC Explora Journeys (a total investment of ~EUR 3,5 billion) officially starts commercial operations in July 2023, with Explora I 's Maiden Voyage (July 17th).

In October was signed an agreement with Shell Western LNG BV (part of Shell plc/world's second-largest oil and gas company/after ExxonMobil) to provide LNG for the ship Euribia. The deal was signed by Pierfrancesco Vago and Tahir Faruqui (Shell LNG's General Manager). Euribia's first LNG bunkering was in Port Rotterdam.

Since November 15th, the shipboard children's and teen's clubs (fleetwide/facilities for kids ages 12 to 17) operate with extended opening hours and longer live entertainment (8 hours daily). The company's expanded youth programming also includes more and new organized/supervised activities (sports, aquapark entertainment, kids-themed dinners, a different game show for teens every night/followed by a disco).

Company changes 2022

In mid-March, MSC Group announced a partnership with Travelife Ltd for EXPLORA JOURNEYS' shore excursion program. "Travelife for Tour Operators" allows tour companies and travel agents access to the company's online management system (16x sustainability modules) with excursion checklists, planning tools, travel- and tourism industries' best sustainability practices examples.

In late-March, MSC became the Official Cruise Partner of "Formula 1".

In August, the entire MSC fleet received "ISO 21070:2017" certification (issued by the International Organization for Standardization) for marine environment protection. The certification specifies the onboard procedures regarding waste management practices (collection, separation, treatment, storage).

For winter 2022-2023 season (December thru April) MSC introduced fly-cruise packages from Brazil to the Caribbean. Via partnerships with Brazilian airlines, MSC provided Brazilian tourists with the opportunity to enjoy affordable 6-hour chartered flights from Sao Paulo (Guarulhos Airport) to Fort-de-France Martinique (Aime Cesaire Airport). In Martinique, they board the ship ( MSC Seaside ) for 7-day roundtrip Caribbean voyages and then fly back to Brazil. MSC's Brazil-to-Caribbean fly cruises are also inclusive of bus transfers (airport-cruise port-airport). The offer was available again for winter season 2023-2024 and again on MSC Seaside.

Company changes 2021

In June 2021 MSC officially launched its luxury brand " Explora Journeys ".

For summer 2021 season (July-October) MSC chartered flights (26000+ seats) to offer fly-cruise packages via partnerships with Europe's largest airlines including Iberia (Spain), Alitalia (Italy), Air France, Eurowings (Germany) and Neos (Italy). This way MSC guaranteed accessible airports and convenient flight times for accessing the homeports (embarkation ports) of 6x ships deployed in the Western Mediterranean (Grandiosa, Seaside), Eastern Mediterranean (Splendida, Orchestra, Magnifica), and the Baltic (Seaview). The package deals were also inclusive of airport-ship bus transfers and COVID health insurance (EUR 25 pp, by Europ Assistance).

On October 6, 2021, MSC opened bookings for Magnifica's Northern European winter 2021-2022 season - the company's first-ever winter season with deployment in the Baltic Sea. Starting on November 14th, the program offered 7-night roundtrips from all call ports in the itinerary (Hamburg, Ijmuiden-Amsterdam, Zeebrugge-Bruges, Le Havre-Paris, Southampton-London) and up to 12-hour port stays.

Company changes 2020

On July 30, 2020, MSC Cruises Ltd and Palumbo Group formed a 50-50 joint venture company to operate Palumbo Malta Shipyard (in Citta Cospicua). The Palumbo shipyard has 4x drydocks and will be used for refurbishments and general maintenance works on MSC ships (passenger and cargo) as well as on other cruise and ferry companies' vessels. The facilities will be updated, including with technologies to handle LNG-powered ships. The deal was signed by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Cruises' Executive Chairman) and Antonio Palumbo (Palumbo Group's founder and Chairman).

In late-November 2020, MSC signed a long-term agreement with ABP Southampton for preferential docking rights. The deal starts in summer 2021 with the homeporting of MSC Magnifica at Southampton's newest/5th passenger terminal. By this agreement, every year MSC has to homeport at least one ship in Southampton.

Company changes 2019

In May 2019, MSC became the industry's first mainstream cruise shipping company with a permanent office in Canada (Mississauga, Ontario). MSC Cruises Canada's new office is served by 15 employees (full-time staff) led by Ian Patterson (Country Manager). With the Canadian office, MSC also launched two new websites - MSCCruises.ca (for consumers) and MSCbook.com/ca (for travel agents). In late-November 2018, MSC signed an exclusive partnership with Chelsea Football Club to become its official global cruise partner (January 2019 thru June 2024). The deal includes LED advertising at Stamford Bridge (football stadium in Fulham/west London). By the agreement, Chelsea FC representatives attended MSC Bellissima 's naming ceremony (March 2019) and on the new ship was also displayed Chelsea FC memorabilia.

In 2015, MSC ordered 4 newbuilds from STX France and Fincantieri Italy , with an option for 3 more units. The first two vessels were delivered in 2017 - Meraviglia (May) and Seaside (November).

MSC Seaside-class cruise ship

On February 1, 2016, MSC announced it would build two "Meraviglia Plus"-class units, with max capacity 6300 passengers. The newbuilds ( Grandiosa /2019, Virtuosa /2021, Euribia /2023) have 200 additional cabins and are 16 m (50 ft) longer compared to Meraviglia-class (2444 staterooms). The last unit's/Euribia's construction started on June 28, 2021.

The first Meraviglia-Plus vessel was delivered in November 2019 (Grandiosa), the second - in February 2021 (Virtuosa). Meraviglia-Plus features include the first-at-sea Fine Art Museum with original artworks, an additional space allowing bigger indoor Promenade (length 111 m / 36 ft), two additional restaurants, and a larger outdoor LED screen (95x6 m / 280x20 ft). MSC signed an exclusive partnership with both Samsung (providing the technology) and Cirque du Soleil (live show programming).

In November 2017, MSC ordered 2 more (Seaside-EVO class) units from Fincantieri (contract value EUR 1,8 billion). They are are bigger (16 m longer, 17330 GT-tons larger, capacity 467 more passengers) in comparison to Seaview-Seaside. Their deliveries were scheduled for 2021 May ( Seashore ) and 2022 November ( Seascape ).

MSC Cruises Seaside-EVO class ship

In early-August 2018, MSC signed an agreement for EUR 1,5 billion (USD 1,74B) for financing both Seaside-EVO liners. The financing was via a partnership with a syndicate of lender banks (Unicredit, BNP Paribas, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti). Fully backing the credit line was the Italian export credit agency SACE SIMEST. With the addition of Seaside EVO, MSC had an unprecedented total investment of EUR 10,5 billion into 12 new vessels with scheduled deliveries by 2026.

On November 30, 2017 (during Seaside's launch) the company Marlink (world's largest independent satellite Internet provider) provided over 0,5 gigabit per second throughput on its Sealink VSAT network. Seaside's record-breaking Internet speed was enabled on Intelsat's new EpicNG satellites. Marlink is MSC fleet's provider of satellite Internet via optimized "cloud of bandwidth". As of 2017, Marlink had as part of its Sealink network 25 satellites and 32 overlapping beams.

On June 14, 2018, MSC signed with STX France shipbuilding order for the 5th Meraviglia-Class unit (delivery in 2023, dual-fuel LNG -powered engines ). With this order, MSC had 13 newbuilds under construction or on order (2017-2026), of which 5x LNG-powered. The announcement was made at St-Nazaire yard. The ceremony was attended by Bruno Le Maire French Minister of Economy and Finance) and Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC's Executive Chairman). The event celebrated 3 major milestones - Virtuosa's steel-cutting, Grandiosa's keel-laying and Bellissima's float-out. For the first time in the shipyard's history, 3 vessels of a single shipowner were simultaneously under construction.

On October 18, 2018, MSC signed with Fincantieri an MoA agreement for 4x EXPLORA class ultra-luxury expedition ships. The contract's total value was EUR 2+ billion. Compared to the company's "liner fleet", the EXPLORA units are smaller (GT 64,000 tons, 500 staterooms). The first boat enters service in 2023, and the remaining 3 will be launched one per year (2024-2025-2026). The signing ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri's CEO).

A curious fact is that Sophia Loren (1934-born Italian film actress) is MSC's traditional Godmother, naming each newbuild since 2003 ( MSC Lirica ).

(NEW) MSC Silenseas ships by STX France

On January 20, 2020, MSC and Chantiers de l'Atlantique (STX France) signed an MoU for the development of a sail-based (wind-powered) prototype of a cruise liner. The new class will be based on the Silenseas concept (introduced by STX France in 2018) that represents hybrid propulsion combining sails with dual-fuel marine engines.

new sailing cruise ship design (STX France Silenseas)

MSC's new cruise vessel will be able to sail with min wind speed 15 knots (28 kph) and wind angle 50+ degrees. The currently considered design features GT tonnage 23,000, LOA length 210 m (689 ft), passenger capacity 300 (150 staterooms).

The sailing ship can reach speeds of 12 knots (14 mph / 22 kph) under sail in 15 knots (17 mph / 28 kph) winds. In winds over 15 knots, the vessel's propellers will be used, acting as a turbine that draws power from the sails. On Caribbean Sea routes, the new technology could reduce propulsion energy by 60%.

STX France's sail-ship design was developed for 3 vessel sizes, the biggest being 15,000 GT tons vessel with LOA length 190 m (620 ft) and 150 passenger staterooms. The French shipbuilding company started research in sail propulsion in 2009, Silenseas has technology patents (2009 and 2017) for the new sail. The unit is made from fiberglass, carbon and epoxy-resin panels. Similar is the concept of Peace Boat's new vessel Ecoship (built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland ).

STX France's new wind-power technology was trialed on the Ponant -owned superyacht Le Ponant , on which one of the existing sails was replaced and the new technology tested.

Shipboard safety

In October 2017, MSC Cruises installed on Meraviglia a modern "Man Overboard Detection System". The company also announced its plans to install such systems fleetwide.

This is an intelligent video capturing, image processing and analysis system that was tested and tuned on the cruise ship for over 25,000 hours, resulting in confirmed accuracy level of 97%. The real-time video data (provided by the ship's HD CCTVs) is monitored and analyzed in a central security center by 2 independent image processing systems, which significantly lowers false alerts.

When the alarm activates (in a man overboard case), light and acoustic signals notify the ship's security officer who can immediately review the recorded video and notify the Navigation Bridge crew to start a rescue operation.

MSC WORLD-Class liners

On April 6, 2017, during the Meraviglia ship's delivery ceremony at STX France shipyard (Saint-Nazaire) , MSC signed a new ship construction MoU ("memorandum of understanding") with STX France for a new series of 4 vessels (WORLD Class) at a total cost EUR 4.5 billion. The ship's order was signed on May 31, 2017.

MSC Cruises World-Class ship

WORLD Class MSC vessels are with a max capacity of 6761 passengers. The number of staterooms is 2632 ( passenger capacity 5264 lower berths). The building cost (per unit) is EUR 1,125 billion, the shipbuilder is STX France.

Each unit has Gross Tonnage/volume 215,863 (GT tons), LOA length 333 m (1093 ft), waterline beam/width 41 m/135 ft (max width 54 m/177 ft), height 75 m (245 ft), draft 9,2 m (31 ft).

Among these liners' key features are latest generation LNG-powered marine engines , new wastewater treatment plants, ultra-modern marine architecture with a Y-shaped superstructure (better panoramic views, significantly increased number of balcony staterooms), G-bow hull (vertically positioned / at a 90-degree angle, improving the vessel's stability and hydrodynamics/fuel efficiency), family-themed "villages", panoramic aft pool, glass-covered pool deck.

MSC Cruises World-Class ship

The first ships from the WORLD series were inaugurated in 2022 Dec ( MSC World Europa ) and 2025 April ( MSC World America ). The two optional vessels were ordered in November 2023 and scheduled for deliveries in 2026 May ( MSC World Asia ) and 2027 February (MSC World tbn). There is also an option for a 5th unit from this class.

In January 2016, MSC signed a partnership with Samsung for the latest technology equipment upgrade fleetwide. Among the provided by Samsung equipment are top-line flat HDTVs (for passenger cabins), LED screens and digital signage boards (in public areas), specialized medical equipment (for onboard hospitals), augmented reality mirrors, printing solutions.

In April 2018, the company introduced its new "Family Explorer Club" excursions program with expected over 250,000 children on cruises in 2018. The new tour program is designed to involve kids and their parents on custom-made shore excursions. The first boat offering this program was Divina. The new interactive land tour experiences are themed on the destination's history and each tour features a local historical character symbolic to that destination/city. Teams are equipped with digital explorer maps, detailed instructions for the mission, and kids receive stickers for every accomplished task. On these family-only tours, kids are booked half-price. Excursions usually start later in the morning and have a max duration of 4 hours.

MSC private islands (Sir Bani Yas, Ocean Cay)

In December 2015, MSC unveiled plans to develop an "unprecedented exclusive marine reserve island experience in the Bahamas". The USD 200-million project was launched in Nassau , where The Bahamas' Prime Minister and MSC's Executive Chairman signed a 100-year lease agreement, enabling MSC Cruises to occupy and develop the island - officially named Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve .

MSC Cruises Ocean Cay Island port

Ocean Cay was a 2-year long, USD 200 million project. The island is sized 95 acres / 38 hectares (0,38 km2 / 0,15 mi2) and is the world's only private marine reserve. It has a 3470 m (11400 ft) long beachfront across 6 beaches, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is the biggest Caribbean private island development done by a cruise company. An interesting fact is that when the MSC ship is berthed in Ocean Cay, all its onboard facilities and services (including the casino) stay open and operational. Ocean Cay Island is surrounded by 64 mi2 (166 km2) of protected waters with coral reefs and ~90 different fish species.

In June 2016, MSC officially announced the exclusive "beach oasis" for MSC cruiseship tourists on roundtrips from UAE ( Abu Dhabi and Dubai ) starting winter 2016-2017. The 2,5 km (1,5 mi) stretch of land on Sir Bani Yas Island features shaded cabanas, hundreds of palm trees and 2000+ sunbeds across 36,000 m2 (387,500 ft2) of sand beaches. Other facilities and amenities available on the island include food and drink bars, MSC Aurea Spa (wellness complex, massages), sports facilities (beach volleyball, tennis), family-kids playground area (with pergola / outdoor garden for parrents), Bedouin tent (selling hand-made local arts and crafts), lounge space (live music, full-service bar), exclusive beaches (with VIP areas and cabanas).

Sir Bani Yas island

The MSC island development is on a smaller isle connected to the main island by wooden boardwalk allowing exclusive access to MSC passengers. MSC worked closely with ecologists and the Abu Dhabi Port Authorities for over 2 years to develop the island and support the ongoing preservation work. The isle is one of the region's largest wildlife reserves due to decades of conservation works and ecological investments to maintain its biodiversity. The "Arabian Wildlife Park" on the main island is home to over 13,000 endangered and indigenous animals, as well as millions of plants and trees.

The first cruise to Sir Bani Yas Island departed on December 3, 2016 (visiting the island on December 5). Prices started from USD 720 per person (7-night itinerary on MSC Fantasia ). In July 2016, Costa Cruises announced that Sir Bani Yas Island will be added as a 1-day stopover (port of call) during season 2016-2017 on Costa neoRiviera . In 2017-2018, neoRiviera was replaced in Dubai by Costa Mediterranea . Costa passengers have access to a private (Costa exclusive) beach with VIP areas with cabanas.

Among the island's shore excursion options are jeep safaris in the wildlife park, sea kayaking, diving and snorkeling tours.

MSC Cruises Asia

In mid-January 2018, MSC announced a new partnership with China's largest online payment platform "Alipay". The deal offers mobile payments fleetwide - on all MSC vessels deployed in Asia. It allows customers to pay for onboard purchases. In November 2017, the Alipay option was introduced on MSC Lirica. Next ship with Alipay technology was MSC Splendida - homeported in Shanghai China since May 2018.

Since May 2017, all Costa Asia -managed cruise vessels (of all Carnival Corporation brands) allow use Alipay payment services onboard. The partnership between Carnival Corporation and Ant Financial Services Group (a subsidiary of Alibaba, China's biggest online trading company) enables Chinese cruise passengers on all Carnival Corp ships in Asia to pay for onboard services and products using their Alipay (mobile payment platform) accounts. Among these onboard services and products are shopping, tours/excursions, food, and drinks. These expenditures are added to the passenger's cabin folio, then cleared via his/her Alipay account on a nightly basis.

MSC Cuba cruises from Havana

In January 2016 MSC became the first major cruise line to homeport in Havana, with MSC Opera (sailing to Jamaica, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands) while MSC Armonia operated on 8-day/7-night itineraries, visiting ports in Central America and the Caribbean:

  • 8-day roundtrip from Havana visited Roatan (Honduras), Belize City (Belize), Costa Maya (Mexico), Isla de la Juventud (Cuba)
  • 8-day roundtrip from Havana visited Montego Bay (Jamaica), George Town (Grand Cayman) and Cozumel (Mexico).
  • Both itineraries were combinable into a 14-night roundtrip Havana back-to-back cruise .

Cuban itineraries on MSC Opera were roundtrips from Havana .

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuba-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government to allow ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-minute JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

IMPORTANT: On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately. The ban relates to "private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels". The US travel restrictions impacted hundreds of pre-scheduled cruise itineraries, which were adjusted to no longer stop in Cuban seaports.

(NEW) PortMiami MSC Terminal AAA

In July 2018, Miami-Dade County and MSC signed an agreement for extended preferential berthing rights and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the building of a new Cruise Terminal AAA at Port Miami .

Port Miami is MSC's exclusive homeport in the USA. The new agreement extended the existing Saturday preferential MSC berthing rights also to Sundays. Additionally, the new cruise terminal (completed in October 2022) was projected to be able to accommodate MSC's largest World Class ships (carrying up to 7000 pax).

As of November 2019, MSC Cruises' largest ship, MSC Meraviglia joins the other 3 ships at PortMiami.

MSC Cruises history

Msc cruises company history timeline.

The cruise line was launched around the premise of offering Europeans an affordable cruise vacation -- a concept that was fairly revolutionary in 1990.

The cruise fleet of StarLauro remained at two until December 1994 when the Achille Lauro caught fire and sank off the coast of Somalia on her way to South Africa.

In 1995, StarLauro's name was changed to MSC Cruises.

In 1997 the Melody joined the fleet to bring the capacity of MSC Cruises to 4 ships.

MSC Cruises was then established in 2002 when it became a subsidiary of the MSC Group.

In 2003 Pierfrancesco Vago joined the cruise line as CEO and there started a massive 5.5 billion euro investment program that set MSC Cruises on its current growth path.

Sophia Loren and Mr Aponte (right) at the Christening of MSC Preziosa in 2003

The 84-year-old Italian actress was first asked to be MSC Lirica's godmother for the ship's launch in 2003.

By 2004, MSC was operating an eight-ship fleet, which it then bolstered through the acquisition of several vessels from the now defunct First European/Festival.

The MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia both Lirica class ships and sisters to MSC Lirica, were purchased from Festival Cruises in early 2004 when the cruise line went bankrupt.

The kicker? The Jade was built in 2006.

2008 MSC Cruises is the first cruise company in the world to be awarded the coveted ‘6 Golden Pearls’ for its outstanding standards in environmental protection, health and safety.

In 2013, MSC Cruises' CEO, Vago, stepped aside to become Chairman to let Gianni Onorato take over as CEO.

2013 was also the first time that the global cruise line brand would target the North American market by deploying the MSC Divina out of Miami.

Both went through a significant refurbishment in 2014/15 including the addition of an 80-foot midsection as part of a $200 million refurbishment program.

After the 2014 initial €5.1 billion investment, MSC announced a further €3.9 billion to further its fleet expansion plan.

In December 2015, MSC Cruises announced the signature of a 100-year lease to develop a private island in the Bahamas.

In addition, the Lirica class ships were enlarged and renewed by Fincantieri under the €200m ”Renaissance Programme”, which was completed by late 2015.

Today MSC Cruises is the world’s largest privately-held cruise line with $2 billion in 2016 revenues.

The line managed to squeeze in another mega-ship in 2017 -- the 4,475-passenger MSC Meraviglia -- which debuted in Europe in June of that year.

An owner of Swiss-based MSC Cruises, Aponte led the interior design efforts on the Seaside, as she does for all her family’s ships; in the weeks before any MSC ship’s maiden voyage, Aponte lingers near the port and sometimes stays on the nearly-ready ship to examine and perfect the design. It’s November 2017 and Rafaela Aponte double-checks that the carpets, curtains, and chairs are just right on the MSC Seaside, MSC Cruises’ newest ship.

To that end, in 2017, the MSC Cruises served nearly 2 million passengers worldwide and is the top cruise line in both Europe and South America.

Meanwhile a sister to MSC Meraviglia debuted in 2018, MSC Bellissima; and a sister to Seaside -- Seaview -- debuted in June 2018.

The MSC Foundation was founded in 2018 to lead and coordinate these conservation and humanitarian commitments worldwide, developing the longstanding philanthropic partnerships of all the MSC Group companies and launching many new initiatives.

Her sister ship MSC Grandiosa (from the Meraviglia Plus Class), came into service in November 2019.

Also in 2019, and after three years of intensive work, MSC Cruises’ private island destination in the Bahamas Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve welcomes its first guests in December.

In 2019, MSC Cruises served nearly 2.7 million passengers and 185 nationalities worldwide.

MSC Virtuosa, is one of the most environmentally-advanced of our fleet, delivered in February 2021.

According to Forbes Gianluigi Aponte, as of 14 June 2021, is worth USD 11.4 Billion.

Explora Journeys, the name of the new brand was announced in June 2021.

The first one, MSC Seashore, was delivered in 2021.

Her sister ship, MSC Seascape will join in December 2022.

Where do you find your sailing history on MSC?

I can't find any history of my cruising with MSC on the website. MSC lost a history that is important for insurance reimbursement. They claim it never existed and I have a hard copy of it and the emailed copy of confirmation.

Does anyone have advice on how to find one's cruise history?

When you are logged in, go on MSC Voyager Club and you will see all your cruises (at least on the italian site).

You'll see them under the Voyager Club tab when you log into your account--unless they've never given you credit for some like we're dealing with. I'm missing three YC cruises from my account and my wife is missing two. I can talk to someone at customer service and they can give me the booking number for all 7 cruises we've taken on MSC. I shared this info via email with Voyager's Club (since you cannot speak to anyone in that dpt) over two weeks ago, and they've yet to fix the problem. I'm trying to get it resolved before we cruise again next month. We should have been "diamond" on our last two cruises, but had no idea because VC can't get things right. Even our current booking doesn't appear to be linked to our accounts, and when I try to add it, a box always pops up to tell me something went wrong and to "try again."

Cruises before 2006 are not available in the history. There is no way to get access to these except your own documents.

Paphillyguy

I am going through the same thing as well.  Our cruise in the Yacht Club from Dec is not listed and we received no points.  I have emailed and called several times and the only response I receive is they are working on it.  Like the other poster, We I call they see the booking but there response is you need to email.  It is very frustration

I can only find how to enroll in the MSC Voyagers' Club. Hey, Italy, how about sending some of your competent IT guys to work on the USA site?

You're not crazy--it took me forever to find how to see my points. You have to login (or create) an account with MSC as if you were going to manage one of your bookings. First, click on the icon next to the phone number:

Same. I got them to add 1 of 2 missing cruises after 4 daily emails. Now trying to get the other added. No explanations given.

5 hours ago, EMc&DrS said: You're not crazy--it took me forever to find how to see my points. You have to login (or create) an account with MSC as if you were going to manage one of your bookings. First, click on the icon next to the phone number:   Then use the section on the right side of the screen to login or create an account:   That should take you to a screen with your account info. Click on the "Voyager's Club" tab at the account to see your cruise history/points:

Yet, it doesn't lead me there. Frustrating.

I've tried both of these and it still doesn't lead me to my history.

What to Know Before Your First Cruise With MSC

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

With Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Cruises bursting into the American market over the last few years, more and more Americans are hearing about the company for the first time. The grand ships make a statement and are breathtaking docked in port but there are some things you’ll want to know before you board an MSC ship for the first time.

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links at no additional cost to you. For more information see my privacy policy here .

1. They’re Italian owned

The now massive cruise line company didn’t even start in the vacation business. Cargo is the main revenue source for MSC even to this day. Owned by only one family, MSC is the largest, privately owned cruise line in the world. The Aponte family built up from one small container vessel to eventual domination of the seas. The small family aspect is still prevalent everywhere around the ship.

Along with this, the Italian influence is everywhere. This sends off a completely different experience than what you may be used to living in an American market. Things sometimes are processed a bit slower. Communication is different, espresso breaks in the middle of the workday are not just a stereotype and humor may be more blunt and dry than what is common across the States.

2. You will be surrounded by different cultures

Sometimes we get so adjusted to our own habits it can be quite jarring when someone doesn’t abide by them. Some countries queue quite nicely while others don’t abide by the line-not because they think they’re more important, but they just don’t even consider why a line would be formed. Some nationalities are louder; some have smaller space bubbles and some drink more.

There will be things that others do that annoy you, but that is just life. Try to go in with an open mind and brush off things that might at first bother you. Then at the end of the day, you’ll realize you’re all there to dance, drink, enjoy the music, explore the ports, and relax. You might even make new friends and actually learn something cool and new about another culture.

First Time Cruising? Check out the 7 Things You don't want to forget to pack on your first cruise and download my FREE cruise packing checklist to make sure you don't leave anything at home!

3. Not everyone will speak your language

With all these cultures on board, you will run into quite a handful of people, guests, and crewmembers that don’t speak English as a first language. Let’s start, before you get scared, by clarifying that by speaking English, you will never be left in the dark. All crewmembers have to speak English in order to obtain the job; of course, this is not a requirement for people looking to vacation.

Cruise Ship Sunset

Maybe you’ll get into an elevator and be surprised to hear Italian, German and French and then by the time you get to the lounge the table next to you is singing along to the Spanish music.

Chances are that a lot of these people actually can speak English as a second language and they’re not trying to be rude by not speaking YOUR mother tongue.

Take a deep breath, realize how cool it actually is to be surrounded by so many different languages. Maybe even practice some basic Spanish or Italian before you get on board to really make a fellow guest or crewmember smile. you may be surprised how easily you can make friends over a smile and a couple laughs despite language barriers.

(Check out How To Learn Any Language you Want for some basic advice on getting started with a new language!)

4. The safety drill and announcements will take longer

MSC ships, whether in the Mediterranean or not, will be filled with guests from all different parts of the world. This again means guests speaking all different languages. Though English is still the major language on board, there will be social hosts and announcements to help cater to the other official languages on board.

Before you moan and complain that it takes longer to get through the safety drill, think about how you’d feel if you couldn’t speak a certain language.

Every one ignores that you have no idea what is going on. No one addresses your questions even though this drill is the most important safety thing you’ll do all week. Solely because you come from 80 percent of the world who doesn’t speak English as a first language? That in no way makes you less important, does it?

MSC is an Italian company after all if it weren’t for English coming on board, we would have never been able to have this wonderful European cruise experience in the first place.

msc cruise line history

5. You won’t get your drinks instantly

European service is much different than American service. Note how I didn’t say worse, but different. Sometimes you’ll wait longer than what you may be used to to get service. Then all of a sudden your server or bartender appears and you have a wonderful conversation with them about their home life, their family, how they like working on the ship. You’re not the only person with those questions.

Before you butt in and say maybe they shouldn’t be talking about their personal life while they’re working…their work life is their personal life. While you’re vacationing for just a week, they live on board to make sure you have that amazing vacation you’ve been dreaming of. The next day, they come back and know your name and your drink preference-DESPITE building relationships with thousands of other new passengers that same week.

The service isn’t created instant in order to turn tables. You’re not at McDonald's; you’re on a high-end cruise line that typically leans towards quality before rushed and sloppy work. I promise the more kind you are with the servers and bartenders, the more likely it’ll be for them to throw you a free drink or try to make that complicated American cocktail you just love that they’ve never even heard of in their country somewhere on the other side of the world.

6. Your food may be lukewarm

MSC prides itself at staying true to their Italian heritage especially when it comes to food. (I mean what is the first thing you think of when you think of Italy?) Although they still try to cater to some American styles of eating-especially in the buffet-what you will find in the restaurants is Italian and Mediterranean authentic food all the way through.

Cruise Ship Dinner

Pasta is al dente. Soup is never made boiling hot. Desserts consist of coffee and pastries instead of triple, chocolate, stuffed explosion brownies. Remember that in every culture food is cooked, served and consumed differently. With MSC you will never have to doubt if your food is authentically Italian or not. It will be.

Check Out My Tik Tok for more Cruise Ship Dining Hacks :)

The pizza is absolutely incredible, but you may not find pepperoni. You’ll find margarita, herb or many other more popular Italian styles. Don’t expect your food to taste “American” because you’re not on an American cruise line anymore. How cool is it that you have the chance to discover so many cultural foods off AND ON the ship.

7. Theatre shows have their own style

How funny is a joke once it needs to be repeated again? Not as funny as the first time for sure. Now, how funny is a joke once it needs to be told five more times? Absolutely tiresome and frankly, probably a bit annoying.

Let’s acknowledge once more how many languages you will be surrounded by. Imagine constantly translating everything you say into five other languages. Although an impressive feat you will see throughout some activities, for example, bingo since money is on the line, you will not see this on the main stage.

You may get lucky and have some types of stand-up shows for your specific language, but the main theaters and shows for the evening will accommodate something every language speaker can appreciate-music, acrobatics, and dance.

With this being said, the main shows in the theatre are absolutely incredible. The theatre dancers, singers, and special talent specialize in all different kinds of styles and shows. You will not leave an MSC ship without hearing an Italian or French love song…without seeing a beautiful Caribbean salsa…without the feeling of togetherness after the final goodbyes from the cast in the theatre.

8. The ships are jaw-droppingly gorgeous

The allure of the ships themselves is magnificent. From their sleek outside figures to the very purposefully, decorated lounges inside, MSC ships carry their own style and modern presence. The breathtaking Swarovski staircases in the atrium onboard the bigger ships act as a perfect backdrop during formal nights. Each lounge has its own personality and every ship go-er will find one that suits them best.

MSC Armonia

9. There will be a lot of dancing

You will rarely find a quiet lounge as music and dancing is such a big part of the culture onboard MSC. You will find quickly that there are parties suited to every type of musical preference all hosted by an energetic and lively entertainment team! If you cruise in the Caribbean, expect a lot of island vibes and sexy bachata lessons. If you cruise in the Mediterranean you might be happy to join in on the flamenco classes.

MSC Armonia

No matter what season you decide to cruise through, you’ll find the perfect nights and themes just for you. Gatsby, ’70s and '80s, Country, Mediterranean…the ability for the musicians onboard to cater to so many different styles of music is impressive, to say the least.

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming an Entertainer Onboard a Cruise Ship

10. They are a big family

If you invest even just a slight bit with the crew or interact with them in any way at all, you will make genuine relationships. Your server, entertainers, musicians, chefs…well they all left their blood families at home for far longer than you can imagine. Compliment them and love on them when they deserve it. Pay attention to them and watch how well they take care of you. Watch how quickly and giddily they accept you into THEIR ship family. Yes, you are on vacation, but this is their home.

MSC Cruises makes bold moves to take on Carnival, Royal Caribbean

R oyal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line have bet big on bigger, better, and newer ships to drive their business. Both cruise lines have been pushing boundaries on their ships adding features like aerial ropes courses, skydiving, bumper cars, roller coasters, and ever-bigger waterslides and parks.

In many cases, both cruise lines have pursued a "the ship is the destination" strategy because their largest ships cannot stop in many ports. That strategy has led Royal Caribbean to invest heavily in its Perfect Day at Coco Cay as well as its upcoming Nassau and Cozumel beach clubs.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line shuts down illegal on-board activity

Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) has followed that strategy with its upcoming port destination Celebration Key in Grand Bahama.

In addition, both cruise lines have bet heavily on short 3-4 day cruises to get new customers hooked on the product. Royal Caribbean has been sailing those short itineraries with the Oasis-class Allure of the Seas out of Port Canaveral.

That's a first for the cruise line which will pave the way for an even more historic move. Royal Caribbean's next ship, the Oasis-class Utopia of the Seas will take over those short sailings from Allure of the Seas when the new ship begins sailing in July.

Traditionally, Royal Caribbean has used its newest ships to offer 7-day sailings as they generally sell at a premium price, Icon of the Seas, for example, has been selling at a huge premium compared even to Wonder of the Seas, the ship that preceded it.

Now, MSC Cruise, which has been expanding its presence in the United States plans two moves to compete with Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

MSC Cruises has a new flagship

MSC has been slowly stepping up its presence in the United States. The cruise line sails out of New York, Miami, and Port Canaveral. The cruise line will bring its new flagship, MSC World America to Miami in Summer 2025.

"MSC Cruises will have two ships sailing from its next-generation terminal at PortMiami — set to be the world’s largest—for the summer 2025 season. Miami’s newest mega-ship, the highly anticipated flagship MSC World America will be embarking on her inaugural season in April 2025," the cruise line shared.

The new ship is designed to compete with Royal Caribbean and Carnival's top-tier ships.

"As the second in MSC Cruises’ trailblazing World Class, the ship will be MSC Cruises’ largest U.S.-based vessel and redefine the cruise experience for her guests. The LNG-powered MSC World America will offer 7-night sailings departing on Saturdays to both eastern and western Caribbean ports, including San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; Isla de Roatan, Honduras; and Ocean Cay," the company added.

Ocean Cay is MSC's private island, a huge beach with food and bar options as well as a lighthouse that's sometimes used for nighttime laser shows.

MSC adds 3-4 days sailings

Royal Caribbean to an even bigger extent than Carnival has bet big on shorter sailings. Offering 3-4 day itineraries can be enticing to passengers who might be wary of taking a cruise.

In theory, offering a short sailing on a top-tier, brand-new ship like Utopia of the Seas, or even the older, but still impressive Allure of the Seas will get customers hooked on cruises. MSC plans to make a similar move by shifting two of its higher-end ships, MSC Seaside and MSC Seashore to shorter itineraries at least some of the time.

"MSC Seascape will also call the new PortMiami terminal home, offering a mix of 7-night itineraries in the eastern and western Caribbean along with new 3- and 4-night sailings to The Bahamas and Ocean Cay to meet the growing demand for mini-cruises," the cruise line shared.

The company has never used its EVO Class ships to offer short cruises from Miami. Seascape's sailings will include an overnight stay at Ocean Cay, "giving guests more time to enjoy the cruise line’s private island with activities including a sunset champagne cruise, beachside stargazing, and a lighthouse LED show."

In addition, MSC Seashore will sail similar itineraries from Port Canaveral.

"From Port Canaveral, MSC Seashore will sail a range of itinerary options, including short 3- and 4-night escapes to The Bahamas. Some of the ship’s 7-night itineraries start out with two days at Ocean Cay followed by stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya," the cruise line added.
