I am a big fan of bringing hats with me when I travel. As I've gotten older and wiser about skin care , I've realized hats are crucial for keeping the sun off of my face at the beach or while cruising around sightseeing all day. But what I'm decidedly not a fan of is the constant dilemma of how to pack a hat and what to do with it when you're indoors or just don't want to wear it.

Nowadays, with shrinking luggage allowances , hat boxes are completely impractical (you better believe my personal item is going towards a fully-stuffed duffel instead of a bulky box meant for one item). Thus I've resorted to stashing hats inside a big tote bag — but even then it would often get crushed and lose its shape — or, even worse, I would just awkwardly carry the hat in my hands.

But I'm here to tell you that those days are gone. I've found the perfect travel accessory: the Toptote hat clip . This little gadget is so simple yet so ingenious – I wonder how something like this didn't really exist before.

Clip the metal carabiner ring around a bag strap, snap the magnet around the brim of your hat, and viola ! Your hat stays securely attached to your bag and you'll have two hands free, plus the invaluable option to wear or not wear your hat. Take all the pictures you want, go shopping, roam around museums, go seamlessly from boat rides to restaurants and back to the beach — all without having the annoyance of carrying your hat in your hands. And, if you're like me and have the tendency to set things down and then forget about them, you now won't be at risk of leaving your hat behind.

The magnet is surprisingly strong, making it unlikely for your hat to fall from someone brushing past or a strong wind, and the metal ring is extremely sturdy — I can see this lasting me for years and years to come. Plus, its clever design looks like a keychain, and at just a few inches long, you can leave the Toptote on your bag even when you're not using a hat. I leave mine secured to the handle of my carry-on weekender so I won't forget it or lose it. Best of all, I love that the design of the clip allows your hat to rest completely flat, keeping the brim nice and intact.

Toptote comes in a few different designs, my favorite being a woven leather drop shape , which comes in a variety of colors, including black, white, and yellow. There's also a luggage tag version with a window for your contact information that you can snap around a luggage handle. Traveling with two hats? Stack them and snap both brims into the magnet and you're ready to jet.

Created by Los Angeles-based fashion stylist Lindsay Albanese , this little gadget fulfills a need she saw for a way to carry hats. "There has to be a better solution than that antiquated hat box," she says. Having mulled the idea over in her head for years before making the first prototypes, she wanted to make sure that whatever she introduced would encompass her vision for "serviceable style" and "bring ease and order into your life." Frankly we think she's accomplished the goal in spades, and apparently a lot of other people did, too: Her hat clip sold out at Nordstrom stores and online in just two weeks after its launch.

But don't worry, it's currently back and fully stocked. To get your own Toptote , head to the link below. For anyone who likes to travel with a hat, I promise this will change your life.

I have been in the field of entry studies for almost two decades now and I held off on trying out the travelers hook for a long time. I've been fortunate enough to always manage to get a latch to slip "somehow" on field entries but once I did finally purchase and field test the Travelers Hook I realized what a unique and powerful tool they are. Definitely worth adding to your field bag. 100%.

'We don't hook up': How to handle a vacation with your ex

Jennifer Ruiz never anticipated that her birthday trip to the Mediterranean with her partner would end in a breakup .

The Florida-based travel writer and her partner had planned the January 2023 cruise around destinations like Greece and Turkey for six months.

That wasn’t their first trip. The pair had previously traveled together and sometimes argued, but that didn’t deter her excitement. As a seasoned traveler, Ruiz was used to navigating airports, but her partner struggled with flying. “We saw air travel as a tense thing because of his preferences and my preferences,” she said. Suffering from tinnitus, he didn’t like flying and would want to “isolate” while she was more relaxed. “They didn’t necessarily mesh with the way we traveled, especially because you’re stuck in a tube for however long.”

Ruiz felt like the disunity between her and her partner’s travel styles escalated other issues they had in the relationship. “They’re aggravated by the setting,” she said, despite no one really being right or wrong. He had a strict diet and felt uncomfortable asking for specific requests, while she just wanted to enjoy all the food on board.

On board the cruise ship together, Ruiz said the lack of space – “that element of being stuck (in a cabin) and being on the water – continued to add to the tension throughout the trip. It was her partner’s first time on a cruise, and as someone who liked to stick to his routine, he ended up being “edgy,” which, in turn, made her “defensive.”

Breakups are hard enough at home. Add hundreds or thousands of miles and a time difference, and they get even more complicated. For some couples, it may have been a long time coming, while for others, traveling itself can play a role.

The small things began to add up and finally, in Santorini, the couple had a big argument and she said her partner took off and “disappeared in the middle of Santorini.” Ruiz remembered feeling “resentful” because this was how the two were spending their one day in “the most romantic place on Earth.”

Back on the ship, Ruiz learned her Facebook profile – vital for her job as a content creator – was hacked. Instead of consoling her during the crisis, her partner took space outside on the balcony with the door closed. “It was a really horrible birthday,” she said.

They broke up shortly after that and had to spend the last two days of the cruise together. “It was really tough,” she said. He went home and she went to Egypt, as planned.

From the experience, Ruiz realizes that she should have let the relationship go sooner and she was “forcing things” through this trip. “It’s like trying to fit a square into a peg hole.”

“Travel is definitely a test of your compatibility,” she said. “It’s important to know the other person and really not think you can just bypass certain things. They’re not going to get better just because you’re in a vacation setting.”

Tips for navigating travel during and after breakups

Kiaundra Jackson, a licensed marriage and family therapist, said breakups are often caused by a build-up or combination of factors. However, travel can add new variables and stressors.

Even before the trip begins, some travelers are planners while others “need a little bit more assistance with that,” Jackson said.

“I think that that can be frustrating for some couples where there is a mismatch in … getting tasks done,” Jackson added. “And that could cause friction.”

Travelers may also have more time on their hands and fewer responsibilities when they’re away from daily life. “And sometimes that can get you in trouble,” she said. “You might be drinking or you might be hanging out with people that you've met there, and there may be some attraction or some cheating or a breach of trust.”

She recommended that couples thinking about traveling together do a lower-stakes test run, like a staycation or road trip somewhere close to home. Consider talking about your vacation styles, as well.

“‘Do you want to be lazy and just lie in the bed all day and be by the pool, or do you want to do something more adventurous?’” she recommended asking. “And just have those conversations so you can at least get an idea of what they would be like on an actual vacation versus you being completely surprised when you're in the thick of it.”

If couples decide to go, Jackson recommends making sure they have access to their own money in case something happens and they need to get separate accommodations or book new transportation home. It’s also a good idea to have a “support person” who is familiar with their relationship.

“You just want to at least have one person who knows where you are, knows that you're safe, and not just physically safe, but emotionally safe,” she said.

When it comes to traveling with an ex, Jackson said it’s important to prioritize your mental and emotional health. “If going on this trip is going to send you in a downward spiral and make things worse, and now you're completely away from all of your loved ones, it's probably not the best idea to go on that trip,” she added. Though some couples may be able to depending on the circumstances of their split.

Alyssa Meza’s ex-boyfriend Nick asked her to go to Thailand with him on their first date. It started as a joke, but less than a month later, she flew to Bangkok where Nick was working to visit.

The Nashville, Tennessee-based pair bonded over their love of travel. So even after they broke up their nearly five-year relationship last June, they decided not to cancel a planned trip to Europe for her birthday.

They were still living together while Nick looked for his own place by the time the August vacation rolled around, and the breakup was amicable, with Meza feeling like the relationship had simply run its course. They also still co-parent their Mini Bernedoodle, Pavlov. “And then I was like, ‘Let's just go on (the trip),’” the 33-year-old said. “‘We travel really well together. It wouldn’t be weird.’” (Plus, their plane tickets were nonrefundable.)

It wasn’t weird.

If anything, Meza said, it was freeing. “We can be very different types of people on vacation,” she said. While Meza said Nick enjoys sightseeing and snapping lots of photos, she likes to move slower – perhaps ducking into a coffee shop where she can “feel like a local.”

Now that they’re broken up, Meza, who works in brand marketing, said there’s less pressure to do everything together or do what the other person wants.

“Now it's like, ‘OK, can we compromise? Like, is there a way that we could do both?’” she said, even if that means splitting up for stretches of time. “It's just a different dynamic, but it still works.”

They also meet at the airport rather than going together and have scrubbed romantic dinners from the itinerary. “And you know, we don't hook up, so there’s also that,” she said.

Meza said she feels “lucky” that there is no bad blood, and they have since taken another trip to Canada.

Meza echoed that. “I have exes I definitely would never go on vacation with,” she said.

She encouraged travelers to adjust any expectations they might have had when traveling as a couple and respect their companion’s boundaries. “It wasn't like when we showed up (in Croatia) there was gonna be rose petals and Champagne waiting for us,” she said.

They are both single at the moment, but Meza said they understand they’d have to be respectful of future partners, too.

“It truly is just like going on vacation with my best friend,” she said.

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

hat travel hook

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Hi Melissa, it certainly was an adventure that’s for sure! Though sometimes, there is something to be said for letting other people take care of things for you and getting to relax and not be too stressed.

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. Nice step by step instruction on getting to Suzdal from Moscow. This is indeed an invaluable resource for first-time travelers to Russia.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I hope some people find it useful!

' src=

Thanks for recommending the Suzdal Hotel, since I prefer to stay in small cozy places with good breakfast. And the service of taking the guests from and to the bus station in Suzdal is a great plus!

Yeah I agree. I would rather stay in a family type place than a bigger place too!

' src=

I have never heard of this town and it sounds like a great place to visit if you are already in Moscow. Your instructions are very helpful and I like how you put a photo of the ticket.

You’re welcome Candy. If you don’t speak the language, Russia can be difficult to get around.

Fantastic detail and extremely useful post for anyone wanting to explore outside of Moscow. Suzdal does sound fascinating.

Thanks Michael!

This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

' src=

This is a great post with quite a few good details. Pics looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

' src=

Wow, you are adventurous! I spent years upon years in Russia and never made it to Suzdal. Never realized Vladimir was less than 2 hrs away from Moscow.

Thanks Jenia. Russia is a huge place. You could live there your entire life and not see it all!

' src=

Thanks for the instructions. If I ever want to visit Suzdal I now know how to get there from Moscow via Vladimir.

You’re welcome!

Suzdal sounds really lovely! I need to travel to more places where there will be snow rather than just constantly chasing the sun 😉

I know what you mean! After 4 months of winter in Russia though, I was craving the sun so much!

' src=

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

Russia Through The Lens

Russia Through The Lens

In Moscow there’s a market that looks like a circus tent – Travel tip!

Danilovsky market in Moscow

Just a couple of hundred meters from the Tulskaya station of the Moscow Metro , basically where the Third Ring Road crosses the Moskva river , you can find a pretty unique place where to eat and do a little food shopping : Danilovsky market .

In the past, this used to be one of Moscow’s largest and most renowned farmer’s markets and it was meant to both offer an outlet in the city for real farmers and provide access to fresh produce to Muscovites (in the Soviet times, that was definitely not always easy). It was built like a huge concrete circus tent (or a flower, it actually really looks like a flower from the air, as you can clearly see in Google maps ).

Now the whole neighbourhood is undergoing strong gentrification , with new luxury residential complexes being built and former factories being turned into lofts and space for tertiary . One noticeable effect of this process has been the transformation of the Danilovsky market from real farmer market into an upscale market with a variety of offerings, including handcrafted products, flowers, delicacies and a delightful series of small restaurants offering cuisines from around the world.

Moscow Market Vietnamese

This has turned the market from an affordable food and produce shopping place for the area residents to a very hip meeting point where to explore different flavours in a very informal setting . The market is also very popular among the “office crowd” as it offers a very wide variety of foods to consume during a short lunch break, with the added benefit of being able to shop for dinner in the same place.

Moscow Market Chowder

One of my favorite places where to eat is the “Chowder and Pie”, where (as you might have guessed from the name) you can find excellent chowder . Their offer includes a fantastically authentic New England Clam Chowder and a more “localized version” of crab chowder, made with real (and rather abundant) Kamchakta crab meat.

In general the prices are on the low-side for Moscow standards and really quite cheap compared to “the West” . You can easily eat a full lunch for under 5 Euros/USD and a dish with lots of crab meat will set you back less than twice as much.

Moscow Market Beijin Duck

Most, if not all, of the restaurants actually have other locations in the city, but they usually created special menus and special offers for this informal settings . So, instead of having to go to a restaurant and likely reserve in advance to enjoy a properly prepared Beijing duck , you can just walk in the market and order a portion.

Another great thing about this setting is that you and your friends (or colleagues) can easily eat together, while having completely different foods . That is because each kiosk/restaurant does not have a “reserve” sitting area. There are tables and chairs (or benches) all around the perimeter of the market (including a very nice “inside terrace” from where I took the feature picture of this post) and you can get your food and sit wherever you want.

Moscow Market Pomogranates

You can still find fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, cold cuts and cheeses in Danilovsky market, but… there’s a but. As I mentioned, this is no longer a market aimed at low-income families where the main selling point is the low price (during Soviet times it was mostly the actual availability to be almost extraordinary…). Everything is high quality and very… how can I say… “polished”. Of course if you can afford to spend a little more you find fantastic fresh fruit and vegetable, especially for seasonal foods. In the warmer months of the year there are a couple of pomegranate stands that offer both the fruits and their freshly squeezed at the moment for you. The central part of the market is occupied by a 360 degrees circular fish stand, which sells fantastic fish and seafood (some of which is still alive), including marvellous sturgeons (the fish from where black caviar comes from).

Moscow Market Dried Fruits

The real forte of the market today, though, is speciality foods , which are harder to find elsewhere, even in huge supermarkets. Many kiosk have a decidedly “regional” soul , like the ones with all kind of frozen fruit and sweets from the middle-east or the states South of the Russian border ( Turkmenistan , Kazakhstan , Tajikistan Armenia , Georgia and so on). Apart from that you can find Italian gelato (ice cream – but that is actually not very much like the real Italian one), Belgian waffles, French patisseries (sweet shops) and boulangeries (bakeries) and so on.

Moscow Market Bread

Finally, some other stands specialize in a specific product (meat, fish, cheese and so on) and there you can find a pretty good choice of varieties coming from all around the world and in general of good to high, to very high, to excellent quality (with prices to match).

Ah, I was almost forgetting, but if you aren’t yet convinced by all you’ve read so far, my Travel Tip is pretty simple: trust me and go visit Danilovsky market in Moscow, especially if you have an hour or a little more free for lunch or dinner and you want to experience something different, fun, exotic and overall decidedly affordable for your meal!

Would you like to  discover the Russia that foreigners rarely, if ever, get to see , with an English (and Italian, Spanish and French) speaking guide (me and my wife) showing you the sights and telling you a bit about Russian history and traditions? If so, do  get in touch  and we’ll be happy to create an unforgettable, tailor-made experience for you!
