The 7 Best Stroller Wagons for Travel

Kid in wagon stroller

Sep 2, 2021

Sometimes you can’t convince toddlers to get in their strollers, but there’s something about riding in a wagon that’s just more fun. Stroller wagons aim to be the best of both worlds, with handles that flip around so you can either pull or push multiple kids and all their assorted gear. Here are eight stroller wagons to take on your next trip (whether it’s a vacation or just to the park). These wagons are equipped with cool accessories from cupholders to car seat adapters. Be aware, however, if you’re planning a Walt Disney trip, stroller wagons are no longer permitted in the theme parks.

Best Stroller Wagon for the Beach: Radio Flyer Beach & Boardwalk Wagon

Radio Flyer Beach & Boardwalk Wagon

The trusty red Radio Flyer wagon of your childhood got an upgrade specifically for seaside  vacations. The wheels on the Radio Flyer Beach & Boardwalk Wagon are extra wide in order to handle sand, and there’s even a convenient bar to hang up to three beach chairs in addition to transporting two belted-in toddlers.

Best Double Stroller Wagon: Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon

Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon

Sometimes siblings are happy to share, and other times, not so much. The Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon is perfect for toting two tots: each child has their own UPF 50 + sun canopy, and kids can either face each other (with a snack table between them) or sit back to back.

Best Collapsible Stroller Wagon: Jeep Wrangler Stroller Wagon

Jeep Wrangler Stroller Wagon

The Jeep Wrangler Stroller Wagon by Delta Children folds in half easily so you can stash it in a car trunk or in the corner of a shed. The stroller wagon seats two children and features chunky wheels worthy of the Jeep name. It comes with a canopy and lots of pockets (even a diaper organizer too).

Best Stroller Wagon for up to Four Kids: Wonderfold W4F

If you’ve got a crew of kids to tote around, consider the Wonderfold W4 , which seats up to four toddlers and has a weight capacity of 300 pounds. That’s a workout. Naturally, there’s room for all the kid stuff, and the whole thing is easily foldable too. Little ones will love to get in and out through a front zippered door.

Best All-Terrain Stroller Wagon: Veer Cruiser

Veer Cruiser stroller wagon

The Veer Cruiser looks very sporty as far as strollers go, with all-terrain wheels and camo print canopies. Kids can stash treasures in storage nooks inside the cruiser, with a footwell so they can stretch out. The Veer folds down, and you can clean the entire thing with a hose.

Best Stroller Wagon for a Comfy Ride: Larktale Caravan

Larktale Caravan stroller wagon

Another stroller with a footwell is the Larktale Caravan , which also boasts two seats that recline for nap times. The wagon folds down quickly and includes tons of pockets for storage. Purchase dual canopies to keep the sun off little ones.

Keenz 7S Stroller Wagon Review

keenz 7s stroller wagon, two kids inside, toddler crawling out

We purchased and tested the Keenz 7S and eleven other top stroller wagons on the market. The Keenz 7S has positive customer reviews and many helpful features but it did not come out on top in our testing.

We found steering and maneuverability, seat comfort and folding and stowing to be below average compared to other wagons. Storage and part and material quality are excellent.

keenz 7s stroller wagon, two kids inside, toddler crawling out

The top-performing wagons in our tests were the Veer Cruiser and Evenflo Pivot Xplore.

keenz wagon travel bag

Functional, decent maneuverability, not overly comfortable for kids

How it Compares

Here is a spec comparison between the top 2-seat stroller wagons.

Where it Fits Among Other Choices

The Keenz has a classic box shape typical of many kid wagons. It is a stroller wagon because it can be pushed or pulled and includes 3-point harnesses to buckle in your kiddos.

It is priced at the higher end for 2-seat stroller wagons, comparable to the Wonderfold W2, much less than the Veer Cruiser, and above Evenflo Xplore, Baby Trend Expedition, Jeep Wrangler and Radio Flyer.

Keenz Product Versions

Most common complaints.

While the Keenz 7S has positive reviews overall, we wanted to find out what could be improved. We read every negative review and collected all the common criticisms. Some we agree with and others did not match our experience.

Kid Travel Video Review

Testing and Research

We compared eleven stroller wagons side by side over several months in 65 different real-world tests and measurements.

Moms, dads and kids all got involved to help us rank the wagons in a number of different categories.

Parent Comfort and Usability

In this category we evaluated ease of cleaning, storage, breaks, assembly, customer service, user manuals, and parent-related accessories.

The Keenz 7S performed well in parent comfort and usability:

The handles are comfy and have a good height range from 28″ to 42.5″. There is an adjustable handle in the front and back.

keenz 7s adjustable, fake leather handle

One parent cupholder is better than none.

keenz 7s cup holder

The packaging was thorough. It took us extra time to get all the plastic off, but we had it unpackaged and assembled in 21 minutes. The manual is full color and very helpful.

Storage Volume Ranking

The Keenz 7S does not disappoint when it comes to storage options.

The main storage bag is attached to the front. An insulated cooler bag is also included that fits nicely in the main storage bag, or can be hung separately on one of the handles. The shape and size of the wagon make it low risk to hang the bag on a handle.

Keenz 7s storage bag and separate insulated cooler

While the big storage bag is in the front and less accessible, there is a multi-compartment bag in the back. Notice there is a fabric cupholder.

Keenz storage compartments on the back

The fabric on the Keenz is removable although you wouldn’t want to do it very often. It is also spot-cleanable.

The inside of the wagon is smooth and easy to empty of crumbs. Here are rankings for crumb removal:

There is no footwell so any mud that gets tracked in will end up on the seats.

Brake Operation

The Keenz 7S has a single rear brake pedal that activates the brake on both rear wheels. It also has individual brake locks on each of the front wheels.

The brake activation and release worked very well. It wasn’t uncomfortable to use the brake in bare feet.

Although the brakes are easy to activate, they were average in our effectiveness test where we stopped a runaway weighted wagon.

Red brake pedal at the rear of the Keenz 7S which operates both back wheels

Steering and Maneuverability

The Keenz was neither great nor poor to push and maneuver. In our steering and terrain tests, we loaded the Keenz up with 40 lbs in the front and 40 lbs in the back for a consistent comparison against other wagons.

Terrain Performance

The Keenz 7S handled grassy fields and parks well. It was more of a challenge going up grassy hills and staying straight on side-hills.

The smaller 7″ wheels on the front didn’t do well over bumps or tree roots. Pulling instead of pushing made it easier to get by on rough terrain. Alternatively you can pull it backwards, leading with the large 12″ wheels, to make it easier get over obstacles.

The wheels are not all-terrain. They are 1.75″ wide, both front and back wheels, and would need to be two or three times that width to handle soft sand or mud.

Many stroller wagons are advertised as all-terrain, but the standard wheels don’t live up to that claim.

the keenz 7S back to back with the evenflo pivot xplore showing rear wheels next together for comparison purposes. The Keenz wheels are 12" and the Evenflo's are 10.5"

Bumpy terrain test:

Staying Straight

The Keenz did well in our test to see how well the wagons stayed on a straight line. It is no fun to constantly be compensating for a stroller pulling to one side. Results of our veer test:

Even though the Veer Cruiser technically scored the highest in this test, it was overly sensitive and required frequent adjustments while being pushed by real people on the sidewalk.

Pushing and Turning Force

The Keenz required a comparatively low amount of force to perform a sharp turn from a dead stop compared to other wagons:

But it took a little more force to get it started rolling:

The Evenflo Pivot Xplore handles more like a stroller than the Keenz. And the Veer Cruiser ranked highest in maneuverability but has a bit of a learning curve due to the smaller swivel wheels located in the back.

Maneuverability Ratings :

Folding and Transport

The Keenz 7S isn’t the easiest to fold and load into a vehicle. Folding and Transport ratings:

Folding requires quite a few steps and even more if the canopy is in use. After some practice, we could do the fold in 54 seconds including taking down the canopy. Unfolding and setup took 70 seconds. Fold times:

Folded Size in Cubic Feet

Stroller wagons folded size in cubic feet :

We probably gave up too early, but we couldn’t get the Keenz 7S to fit in the trunk of our Honda Civic.

The Keenz 7s sticking out of the trunk of a honda civic because it doesn't fit

But it fits fine in the back of a minivan even with the seats up.

Keenz 7S shown in the back of a minivan. It fits nicely

The Keenz is lightweight although not the lightest.

Kid Comfort and Usability

The Keenz is well equipped for parents but is lacking in a few key areas that make a difference in kid comfort and usability:

The seats do not recline and there is no footwell. Their backs sit straight up with their legs stretching out in front of them. There is no seat ventilation or ventilation in the sides of the wagon.

keenz wagon travel bag

The seat harnesses are padded and 5-point. The harness mechanism is adequate.

There is a bar behind the lower back of the seats that is part of the frame and may be uncomfortable.

Snack Tray and Storage

There are no snack holders or snack trays, and no kid cup holders.

The Keenz 7S measures 31″ x 18″ x 14″ on the inside. This is slightly longer and wider than the Evenflo Pivot Xplore, Baby Trend Expedition, and Veer Cruiser, but shorter than the Radio Flyer Discovery and Jeep Wrangler.

The flat surface on the bottom of the wagon can be used for napping or playing, which is an advantage over the Xplore and Cruiser.

The sides of the Keenz are 14″ preventing toddlers from seeing out when seated.

Getting In and Out

Taller and more agile kids can climb up over the sides to get in.

A 5 year old is sitting in the Keenz 7S and a 2 year old is climbing out with his leg over the side

The canopy gets in the way when lifting smaller children into the wagon. The Wonderfold W4 solves this problem by letting kids crawl in the back.

The Wonderfold W4 has a back zippered entrance that lets kids crawl into the wagon on their own

The canopy has a few useful features. The top unzips leaving mesh fabric that allows for ventilation and more sun. The ventilation of the wagon, in general, is limited since the sides and floor are completely solid.

Keenz shown with canopy open revealing mesh fabric for ventilation of the top, and sun shade down blocking sun from the side

Sunshades on each side unroll down from the canopy and can be left hanging or attach with velcro onto the sides. The sunshades are held up with elastic that is easy to operate.

Keenz with a sunshade lowered down from the canopy

Putting the canopy on involves sliding a button for each of the four canopy posts, raising the posts from where they are stored in the frame, and sliding the posts into the four holes in the canopy frame. It isn’t difficult but is time-consuming. It takes about 30 seconds after you get the hang of it.

Keenz 7S slide button used to raise and lower posts that hold up the canopy

Part and Material Quality

The Keenz is well made and scored well in part and material quality:

The packaging was thorough and protective. There were no missing parts and everything worked well after we put it together.

The axel assembly doesn’t feel as robust as in some other wagons but we didn’t test it systematically. A wheel fell off a couple of times taking the wagon in and out of a van. This seems to be a design issue where the wheel release button can be accidentally pushed, rather than a quality problem.

The Keenz makes use of strap buckles, buttons, zippers, and velcro in many places. We didn’t find any problems or weaknesses with the operation of those connectors.

The wheels are made of plastic and rubber similar to the Pivot Xplore.

Keenz 7S vs Jeep Wrangler

Keenz 7S sitting side by side with the Jeep Wrangler stroller wagon

The Keenz 7S performed better than the Jeep Wrangler stroller wagon in our testing, primarily because it is much easier to push and maneuver than the Wrangler.

The Wrangler has a wide front wheelbase which looks cool, as Jeeps do, but requires more force in turns.

Both wagons have ample extra storage, include cooler bags, have nice canopy coverage and quality parts.

The seats are also similar and not too comfortable. There are no footwells and the seats do not recline.

Our full review of the Jeep Wrangler stroller wagon

Advantages of the Keenz 7s over the Jeep Wrangler:

  • Easier to push over grass and bumpy terrain
  • Easier to steer and maneuver
  • Goes through a narrow 28″ door
  • Has a more compact size folded
  • Is 14 lbs lighter

Advantages of the Jeep over the Keenz:

  • Lower price
  • Folds more easily and quickly
  • Includes a car seat adapter

Keenz 7S vs Veer Cruiser

Keenz 7s stroller wagon sitting side by side with the veer cruiser

The Veer Cruiser had the highest scores in our testing and received our Editor’s Choice award. It is quite a bit more expensive than the Keenz 7S and does not include a canopy or any additional storage.

The Veer is much easier to fold and stow than the Keenz. It folds faster and easier and takes up 7.9 cubic ft vs Keenz 8.9 cubic ft when folded.

Although the Keenz isn’t too bad on grass and non-flat terrain, the Veer is much better.

Because the Veer has a footwell, the seats are more comfortable than Keenz 7S seats.

Our full review of the Veer stroller wagon

Our full comparison of the Veer and Keenz 7S

Advantages of the Keenz over the Veer:

  • Lots of additional storage
  • Included canopy and cooler bag

Advantages of the Veer over the Keenz:

  • Ease of folding and stowage
  • Better maneuverability over all types of terrain
  • Rugged build quality
  • Included snack tray and cupholders for kids

Keenz vs Wonderfold

keenz wagon travel bag

This is a summary but here is our full comparison of the Keenz vs Wonderfold .

We tested the Wonderfold W4 Elite and the Keenz 7S. The Keenz is a 2-seater and the Wonderfold is a 4-seater. You may be interested in the Wonderfold W2 which is a 2-seater, or may simply want a wider wagon with more space than the Keenz offers.

In our testing, the Keenz outperformed the Wonderfold in every area except Kid Comfort and Usability. Wonderfold has higher scores in the kid department because the seats recline and are adjustable, there is a large footwell, seats are more comfortable, kids can see out over the sides and can crawl in by themselves through a zippered door.

In other areas, the Keenz does better. It is easier to steer, performs better on grass, and has a smaller folded size. Neither wagon is particularly easy to fold or put in a van.

Both wagons have quite a bit of storage space.

Our full review of the Wonderfold W4 Elite

Advantages of the Keenz over the Wonderfold:

  • It is much smaller folded
  • It is 21 lbs lighter (it is 7 lbs lighter than the Wonderfold W2)
  • It maneuvers more easily
  • Includes a cooler bag

Advantages of the Wonderfold over the Keenz:

  • Reclining, adjustable seats
  • Kids can climb in by themselves
  • Kids can see out the sides while seated

Keenz 7s Stroller Wagon

The Keenz Stroller Wagon is a popular stroller wagon used by a lot of families in their daily hustle and bustle. It is a versatile wagon that can be used on most terrains including the park, beach, sporting events, and more. These wagons are designed keeping in mind the needs of the on-the-go family. While they do come with lots of features, the wagon may not necessarily come with many accessories (unless there is some deal going on). But you can always buy them separately for your wagon. Here are some cool accessories and hacks for the Keenz in order to get more from your stroller wagon.

Keenz 7S Stroller Wagon Liner Set

The Keenz 7S Stroller Wagon Liner Set inlcudes a reversible Wagon Stroller Liner, Matching Blanket and Harness Covers. This is what you need to keep your kids comnfortable in the wagon, and these are also easily washable.

KEENZ 7S Wagon Stroller FRP Folding Snack Tray

The Keenz Stroller Wagon may not necessarily come with snack tray / cup holder (unless there is some deal going on). But you can always buy a snack tray with cup holder separately for your wagon stroller.

KEENZ Wagon Stroller Snack Tray

4mm tray border / lip that prevents food and other things from flowing down. Fixes firmly to the frame. Made of reinforced plastic.

Its wide enough so that the kids don’t have to fight for space on the tray.

Easy folding function makes it easy to store when not in use (lot of parents store the tray in their cooler bag with water). Though parents really like the concept, a few parents found it challenging to fold and open the tray.

Can you bring hair products in checked luggage?

Yes, you can bring hair products in your checked luggage without any restrictions. This means you don’t have to worry about the size and quantity of your shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, and other hair products as long as they’re not flammable or explosive.

However, if you’re traveling internationally, be aware that other countries may have different rules and regulations regarding the types of hair products you can bring.

Can you bring hair products in carry-on luggage?

Yes, you can bring hair products in your carry-on luggage, but there are some guidelines you should follow. The TSA has established the 3-1-1 rule for carry-on bag liquids, aerosols, and gels.

This means that all liquids, aerosols, and gels must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less per item and placed in a clear quart-sized bag. Each passenger is only allowed one clear bag per person.

Can I bring hairspray on a plane?

Can i bring hair spray on a plane? TSA rulles.

Yes, you can bring hairspray on a plane, provided it meets the restrictions outlined by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). According to the TSA guidelines, hairspray in a container of 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less is permitted in carry-on luggage.

If you have a larger container, you can pack it in your checked luggage.

It’s also important to note that most hairspray is considered a flammable item, so it should be packed in a well-sealed plastic bag to prevent any leakage or damage to other items in your luggage.

More importantly, hairspray should be covered with a cap to prevent accidental release. See here for more safety information when flying with hair products.

  • Place all your hair products in a clear, quart-sized bag.
  • Label the bag with your name, address, and phone number if it gets lost.
  • Pack the bag in an easily accessible place in your carry-on, so you can take it out at security screening.

Other tips for packing hair products when traveling.

Aside from following the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, here are some other tips for packing your hair products when traveling:

  • Buy travel-sized hair products to save space and comply with the TSA’s rules.
  • Use refillable travel-sized containers and fill them with your favorite hair products from home.
  • Pack your hair products in a plastic bag or a leak-proof container to prevent spillage.
  • If you’re checking in your luggage, wrap your hair products in a plastic bag or bubble wrap to prevent damage.

Packing your hair products when traveling doesn’t have to be stressful. You can bring them both in your checked carry-on luggage if you follow the rules and regulations.

When packing them in your carry-on, please comply with the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule and pack them in a clear quart-sized bag. Follow our tips, and you’ll have a hassle-free travel experience.

**What is the purpose of shampooing the hair prior to giving a perm service? **

Shampooing the client's hair will remove all surface debris that could affect perm solution penetrating into the hair shaft.

** Why is it important to towel blot excess water from the hair prior to wrapping the hair on permanent wave rods?**

A wet sponge absorbs less than a damp one. Apply the same theory to hair. The less water in the hair, will result in thorough and even penetration of the waving lotion.

Why is it important to watch the amount of tension used while wrapping the hair on permanent wave rods?

Wrap the hair with minimal tension (a tight belt around your waist can leave you feeling uncomfortable and unable to expand). Wrapping with tension leaves no room for the hair to expand, making it harder for the hair to accept the solution.

If the permanent wave solution is being used with an activator, why is it important that it be mixed thoroughly?

Mix and shake all products well. Opaque, colored bottles and tubes make it impossible to tell if the products are mixed or if the activator tubes are empty. Don’t hesitate to shake everything, even neutralizers!

Why is it important that the permanent wave solution be applied slowly and what happens if this procedure is rushed?

Apply solutions slowly, you took the time to wrap the hair properly, so give your chemicals time to be completely absorbed.

What is the purpose of a processing cap and why does it need to be sealed tight?

Air can slow down the process and strength of your perm product if the processing cap is not sealed tightly.

When the directions state, “DO NOT TAKE A TEST CURL”, why is it important not to take a test curl and what happens if a test curl is taken?

Today’s perms are made with different moisturizers and conditioners to give the finest results. However, these ingredients tend to add weight to the hair and give you a false reading if a test curl is taken. Also, taking a look means breaking the air-tight seal of your processing cap and weakening the strength of the perm.

What happens when the permanent wave solution is not sufficiently rinsed from the hair prior to neutralizing?

Rinse, rinse, and rinse some more. This will remove perm odor, eliminate dryness, and control the possibility of lightening the hair.

What would occur if towel blotting was not done thoroughly, and the hair was neutralized?

Blot, blot and blot some more. Remember, it is easier to take apart a puzzle than it is to construct one. With hair, it is easier to disconnect bonds than it is to reunite them. The more water you remove from the hair between chemicals will ensure that enough neutralizer will penetrate.

What is the purpose of neutralizer and why should all of it be used?

Use all of the neutralizer. If the hair accepted two bottles of waving solution, then it will also accept two bottles of neutralizer.

12 Types of Perms, Explained

Discover which perm is best for your hair type.

keenz wagon travel bag

@imaanhammam / Instagram

When thinking about perms, the images that come to mind span from ’80s Jheri curl mullets to Carrie Bradshaw's infamous curls in the early ’90s. But these permed styles are not just a thing of the past. Permanent solutions are back on the scene, making waves of all shapes and sizes and catering to every hair type. Whether you have limp, fine strands that crave body and volume, or are simply looking to avoid a plethora of product buildup to keep your hair's movement intact, there is a perm out there to solve your hair woes.

"Most perms work best on virgin or healthy hair, however, you can perm pretty much any hair type as long as the hair is not compromised from bleaching, previous perms, or the use of other harsh chemicals such as relaxers and so on," says hairstylist Mateo Lara.

We tapped Lara and hairstylist Briana Dunning to explain every type of perm there is.

Meet the Expert

  • Briana Dunning is a hairstylist specializing in body wave perms at STRIIIKE Salon in Beverly Hills, CA.
  • Mateo Lara is a hairstylist specializing in multi-textured perms at Benjamin , a salon in West Hollywood, CA.

Keep reading to learn what the experts have to say about the various perms available and which one may be best for you.

Body Wave Perm

For individuals who want to achieve body and texture to the hair, a body wave is the perm for you, according to Lara. "Body waves offer a softer, more natural-looking wave," adds Dunning. "It can also provide added texture and longer-lasting blowouts."

To create these effortless, natural-looking waves, "normally larger rods are used to create the look, giving it less of a curl," Lara explains. Larger rods and a more mild solution are the keys to this perm giving you that loose, desirable movement. The ideal hair type for this treatment? "Anyone with straight hair or inconsistent waves who wants to have more texture or wants to get a soft, natural wave," says Dunning.

Spiral Perm

"Depending on the density of the hair, spiral perms with their spiral-shaped curls are going to give medium-maximum volume," Dunning explains. The rods used for spiral perms are usually on the smaller side and applied vertically rather than horizontally. "The curls are normally tighter and last longer due to the thinner perm rods used," says Lara. "This will give a fuller, longer look to the hair."

If you're considering an all-over, voluminous curl pattern à la Sarah Jessica Parker circa 1990, the spiral is the perm for you.

Multi-Textured Perm

Dunning tells us that if you're someone with straight or wavy hair and you're looking for movement that's less uniform, with more of a natural-looking curl, you're likely striving to get the look of a multi-textured perm. Inconsistency in the curl size is what makes it look so effortless and natural.

"Multi-textured perms are my absolute favorite," says Lara, who specializes in the look. "These perms use a combination of different-size rods to create that more believable, natural-looking curl." The results are a very perfectly imperfect, natural type of movement.

Straight Perm

Not all perms are curly. The catch that differs a straight perm from other straightening treatments? Well, it's permanent. (Hence its name).

"This isn’t something people normally ask for anymore," says Lara. "They tend to do a keratin treatment or Brazilian blowout instead." While a keratin treatment or a Brazilian blowout is a semi-permanent option with a shorter lifespan that smoothes over the cuticle, a straight perm is actually entering the hair shaft and altering the bonds of the hair for a longer-lasting effect. "A straight perm is great for someone with curly or frizzy hair who wants it to be straight and smooth," says Dunning.

"There are two main types of straight perms," she says, noting that their differences lie in the type of chemical formula that's used. One formula that's "thio"-based, "is ideal for those with type 2a (wavy/curly) to 3c (curly/coily) hair," Dunning explains. "Then there's a sodium hydroxide formula, which is the better option for types 3b (curly/coily) to 4c (kinky/coily)."

Once you've tried either one of these solutions to get the straightened hair you've always longed for, Dunning warns you should never try the other formula. "Even if it’s just on the ends or you feel that it’s been a 'long time,' those chemicals are still in there and can have devastating effects, basically making the hair melt—think Nair hair removal," says Dunning. No thank you. Even the decision to do a straight perm is solidified in permanence, so be sure you're ready to commit to this look for the long haul.

Stack perms typically bring to mind a very '70s look. "This is a technique in which you use different perm rod sizes and focus on the middle and lower area of the head," says Lara. Straighter and smoother at the root, a stack perm lets the party live at the ends, like Lara explains, where along with the right haircut, it provides an effortless shape to the hair.

"This used to be a popular style method for graduated bobs," says Dunning, "giving them that stacked look." This is also how the rods are applied, stacked one on top of the other, and graduating away from the scalp as they move their way up. If you have a straight bob and are looking to add a lot of volume to your ends, Dunning suggests the stack perm as your best bet. Lara, in full support, notes a stack perm will "create fullness and a layered appearance to your hair."

Root perms are on the rise, and as you can imagine, this treatment gets applied to only the roots of the hair, matching the texture of your mid-shaft and ends. The main goal of a root perm is to create volume at the roots, and it can do this on curled or straightened hair. It's particularly great for anyone who usually blow-dries their hair, Dunning notes, saying that the bump from the rod application may be more visible if you typically air-dry.

While a root perm can also be done as a touch-up to the pre-existing perm that's grown out (similar to the touch-ups you'd get with your hair color), a pre-existing perm is not required. "The root perm is for someone who has limp hair and needs volume near the base," Lara explains. "It’s also great for frizz control, and can give the hair a bouncy appearance."

Partial Perm

Partial perms, as you'd likely guess by their name, are not applied to the entire head of hair but only to designated areas. According to Lara, partial perms work best with shorter haircuts. "It’s one of my favorites perms for shorter hair, especially on men," he explains, because of its ability to add movement and texture to the top while the sides of the hair, around the ears, and the hairline remain short and tapered.

When looking for products to maintain your perm, reach for a sulfate-free, high moisture shampoo and conditioner. "I also recommend hair oil and a deep conditioning mask from time to time, as perms sometimes create dryness," says Lara.

According to Dunning, a spot perm is commonly used to create uniformity for curly-haired strands. "Often people with curls have multiple textures to their hair, including entire sections that can be entirely straight." A partial perm provides the ability to balance out those stubborn areas and better blend in with the rest of the hair's natural movement.

When it comes to rod size and placement, "you'll end up using whatever your stylist sees to be fit for the hair type," says Lara. The spot perm is all about meeting specific, individual needs.

Digital Perm

According to Lara, a digital perm is created with a "salon styling stand device machine, which uses a solution that isn’t as harsh as a classic perm and also infrared heat." The machine has detachable rods that come in different sizes and achieves a natural wave or soft curls.

Dunning adds that a digital perm is "great for more coarse/resistant textures of hair to create a soft, springy wave or curl." This updated version is also more gentle on the hair but the heat element helps to give a defined wave on more resistant hair.

Volumizing Perm

"A volumizing perm is great for individuals who don’t want curly hair necessarily but want a wave, body, and bounce to their hair," says Lara. To achieve this look, do the same steps as a classic perm minus the neutralizing, which will be done after removing the rods.

Pin Curl Perm

Usually seen on bobs and shorter hairstyles, a pin curl perm is when hair is wrapped in paper, creating the desired curl pattern, and holding it in place with a flat clip. Lara says that this technique creates soft waves and gives light volume to the hair.

Beach Wave Perm

"I love doing these types of perms," says Lara of the beach wave-style perm. "I achieve this look by using longer, medium-sized foam rollers and wrapping the hair loose and in a parallel placement." For an extra beachy vibe, leave the ends out when curling.

Dunning adds that flexi-rods are used to create an effortless, natural looking wave in hair. "This is not a springy curl, it's more of a relaxed wave. The rod size determines if there is more or less movement," she says.

A Definitive Guide to All Types of Perms

How perms work, different types of perms, the pros and cons of a perm, how to choose the right perm for your hair type, the perming process, explained, maintaining your curls.

Getty Images

During the ‘80s, tight, springy curls achieved via perms were everywhere. In the ’90s, they took a backseat to straighter styles and treatments, but they’re back and better than ever. With more curl-creating variations available today than in years past, there’s a type of perm for nearly every imaginable wave or curl and hair type and texture.

Tatiana Dudley , Moroccanoil hair stylist ambassador, says that the modern-day perm, which still relies on chemicals to alter the texture and shape, is milder, less damaging, and comes with less processing time compared to perms from the ’70s and ’80s. “Today’s perms are all about conditioning with new products to help protect the hair’s health.” Even celebrities like Katie Holmes and Emma Stone have been known to sport a perm for bodacious curls and waves that look natural. Below, find everything you need to know about all types of perms.

Meet the expert

  • Tatiana Dudley is a hairstylist and Moroccanoil ambassador.
  • Ursula Stephen is a celebrity hairstylist who works with the brand Living Proof.
  • Lisa Estridge is a color and perm specialist at Eliut Salon in New York City.

The perm is one of the longest-standing hair treatments that continues to evolve. "A perm is short for permanent," says celebrity stylist for Living Proof Ursula Stephen . "The process permanently waves or curls the hair using chemicals and rods to add life, body, and texture to fine hair. If someone's hair is too straight, flat, limp, or doesn't hold a curl, I may recommend a perm as a styling option."

Lisa Estridge, color and perm specialist at Eliut Salon , adds that for a perm to work its curl-creating magic, the solution must utilize specific chemicals to change the hair's texture and curl pattern from the straightest of straight to curly or wavy by following the shape of the rods or rollers used.

While you may think all types of perms are the same from one to the next, they're not. The curl or wave you want, along with your natural hair type , dictates the perm that will work best. Dudley says spiral perms, body waves, and beach wave perms are trending for straight hair. "They look more like a natural wave or curl, which is why they're popular."

Perms can also be classified as cold or hot, which equates to how the perm solution sets. Dudley explains that cold or alkaline perms don't use heat during processing but rather an alkaline solution that coats the hair after being wrapped around a rod. "Cold perms result in tighter, more defined curls, much like the curly perms of the '70s, '80s, and '90s. They are also better suited for unprocessed medium or coarse hair, adding volume, or creating tighter, more defined curls." On the other hand, Estridge says that hot perms, also called acid perms, rely on heat to activate the perm and can often be used on a softer curl.

1. Spiral Perm

Best for shoulder-length hair or longer. Dudley says spiral perms create various-sized tight curls at different lengths by wrapping the hair vertically around rods. "Anyone with curly or fine low-density hair can get a spiral perm because it immediately adds volume with tight ringlet curls."

2. Digital Perm

Unlike other perms, the digital perm utilizes infrared heat through space-age temperature-controlled rods for a mix of natural-looking waves and tighter curls with a hint of added volume. It is suitable for all hairstyles. Dudley adds that the curls are most defined when dry and loose when wet.

3. Body Wave

For the loosest curl that boasts a natural wave, choose a body wave, which employs larger rods and a milder perm solution. They also add texture and volume to straighter hair that typically can’t hold a curl. Estridge says body wave perms are good for creating a soft wave or bend in any hair type.

4. Beach Waves Perm

If loose, messy, beachy waves are your favorite curls, opt for a beach perm. “It uses foam rollers rather than traditional perm rods to wrap the hair loosely for a soft wave,” Dudley explains. “Typically, beach perms also use a milder perm solution.”

5. Root Perm

A root perm adds volume a few inches off the root on straighter hair. Whether done on natural hair or as an add-on to already permed hair, a root perm can also help control frizz along the hairline.

6. Pin-Curl Perm

Ideal for all hair types, especially shorter hair, a pin curl perm creates a soft, loose wave by wrapping the hair around pins instead of rods for bouncy, springy curls. Longer, larger rods lend less of a tight curl pattern, while shorter, smaller rods make for a tighter curl.

7. Partial/ Spot Perm

Estridge says partial or spot perms can treat a particular area or section of the hair, usually the top. They're beneficial for making natural curls appear more symmetrical from one side of the head to the other so everything seamlessly blends in better.

To reverse a frizzy or very curly pattern, a relaxer, or straight perm, uses a chemical-based solution without rods, pins, or rollers to smooth out curled and textured hair. The application process differs from curl-inducing perms, making for much lengthier hair treatment with the downside of creating a lot of damage (that's why more people opt for keratin treatments ).

9. Stack Perm

A stack perm creates more of a shaggy wave with most of the texture running from the middle of the hair down to the ends. "It uses wooden sticks that are used on the hair starting at the bottom to treat the ends," Estridge explains. Your stylist can also apply it closer to the root for more volume, or the roots can be left alone for a straighter look.

10. Multi-Textured Perm

For the most natural-looking curls that aren't uniform or obvious, a multi-textured perm creates curls of varying textures by combining different-sized rollers and rods. The result is a mix of tight curls and loose waves for a natural-looking curl pattern that resembles naturally wavy hair.

11. Volumizing Perm

Good for all hair types and lengths, the volumizing perm does what its name says: it adds volume. An array of rod sizes is used throughout the hair to boost volume through a very relaxed wave.

Transforming pin-straight hair into cascades of natural-looking curls and waves with added volume and fullness has never been easier—and safer—than with a modern perm. But even though perms have gotten better and are safer, they still rely on strong chemicals, like ammonium thioglycolate, to break the hair's bonds and alter its natural shape, which can lead to dryness, some damage, and potentially breakage. "There's also the potential for over-processing the hair at touch-up appointments as well as dry hair that's more prone to breakage," Dudley explains.

Still, a perm will add volume and shave time off your regular haircare routine due to its wash-and-go capabilities, says Dudley. Although all types of perms don't last forever despite their name, on average, you can expect their effects to stick around for three to six months, depending on your hair type, length, perm type, and how you care for your hair.

Unlike hair color, which washes or fades away, a perm doesn't. The effects of a perm grows out as new hair grows in. For the most part, the regrowth transitions into a nice wave.

Before you go down a rabbit hole trying to figure out which perm is suitable for your hair type, Estridge says to consult a perm specialist to see which one is right for your hair. It's important to consider the hair's texture, length, health, and porosity, as well as the type of curl or wave you are looking to achieve, to find the right perm. Perms are rather tricky to do at home yourself, so this is one hair treatment that's best left to the experts.

On the days leading up to a perm, it's best to prep the hair as much as possible so it takes well to the service. Estridge has her clients condition their hair for one to two weeks before a perm to get it in optimal health, while Dudley recommends washing with Moroccanoil Clarifying Shampoo ($26) the day before a perm to thoroughly clean the hair. "If there is build-up on the hair, it can prevent the perm solution from taking and result in a less desirable outcome. Just be mindful not to over rub or scratch the scalp, which could result in irritation, burning, and pain during the perm."

Different types of perms use different-sized rods, rollers, and specific chemical-based solutions to achieve the desired effect. No matter the perm type, the steps are relatively the same. Estridge says all perms start with shampooing the hair with a clarifying shampoo. "Then, the perm has to be wrapped with the solution before it is applied to the hair," she says. "If I'm using a hot perm, the head goes under a heat dryer, but not if it's a cold perm." Then, after the perm is set, it is rinsed out and towel-dried. Finally, she says, a neutralizer is applied for five minutes, the rods are removed, and the hair is rinsed again. From start to finish, the entire perming process can last upwards of two hours, if not longer.

To maintain the curl's shape, do not wash or wet the hair, apply heat, or brush it for at least 72 hours after it is permed to allow the hair to set. While it's perfectly safe to color and highlight permed hair, Dudley says not to color it for a bit after a perm. It's best to give the hair at least four to six weeks to heal between perming and coloring it.

To keep the hair feeling soft and shiny, wash it with gentle, sulfate-free moisturizing shampoos like Ouidad Moisture Restoring Shampoo ($30) and conditioners such as CurlSmith Essential Moisture Conditioner ($26), along with weekly deep conditioning or oil treatments to help mitigate dry ends. Stephen suggests avoiding heat styling with a perm and using a wearable treatment like Triple Bond Complex by Living Proof ($45). "It helps strengthen the hair, making it resistant to future damage, and leaves the hair feeling soft and smooth," she adds. She also recommends always using a wide tooth comb on the hair instead of a brush. Finally, Dudley says regular trims for length retention are necessary since curly hair can often hide damage and breakage in the hair.
