6 Tips to Insuring Travel by Train

6 Tips to Insuring Travel by Train

Train travel is far more common in other countries than it is in the U.S. and there are many reasons that travelers like to travel by train. Not the least of which is the old-fashioned charm of traveling at near ground level where you can enjoy the scenery as it goes by. See some of the world’s most scenic train rides .

Of course, travel by train is still travel after all and travel is unpredictable. it comes with its own share of risks and rewards. The need to protect yourself from cancellations, delays, and baggage loss remain important whether you’re traveling by train or by airplane for example.

We’ll explain how to protect yourself when you travel by train in a minute, but first, let’s go over the benefits of traveling by train that have so many people enthusiastic about train travel.

Benefits of Traveling by Train

Train travel has long been less appreciated in the U.S. for a few reasons – not the least of which is that the infrastructure simply doesn’t exist at the same level it does in other countries. Train travel fans will tell you there are many benefits of traveling by train, including:

  • It’s a cost-effective alternative to airline fares particularly considering the ever-increasing airline fees and the distance you’re traveling. Plus, many rail operators give discounts to children, students, seniors, military personnel and others.
  • The ticket prices for train travel are far more stable. Anyone who’s suffered through trying to find the cheapest airline ticket knows that it’s a crazy game, but train fares tend to remain stable (with some adjustments for holidays or peak times) day after day on any particular route and buying ahead doesn’t win you a cheaper ticket.
  • It’s a more flexible way to travel. Except on long-haul or infrequently traveled routes, a train ticket lets a traveler catch the train that works into their schedule instead of the other way around. Most short trips don’t require prior reservations and you don’t have to pay change fees to go at a different time. Plus, there is no need to arrive hours early, wait in long security lines, ration your shampoo, etc.
  • Train travel comes with a much larger baggage allowance – often two carry-ons and up to four checked bags each (the first two of which are free). While there are weight limits, you won’t get your bags on an airplane that cheaply.
  • Train travel is also more energy-efficient per passenger mile than cars or planes, making them one of the most eco-friendly modes of transportation after walking and cycling.

Here’s how to protect your travel investment when you’re taking a train trip.

1. Choose the right type of travel insurance plan

While travel insurance is typically divided into two types of plans: package plans and travel medical plans, there’s another type of plan that’s often useful for train travelers – an annual plan. Here’s how to decide:

  • If you have defined start and end dates to your trip, and want coverage for trip cancellations, you’ll want a package plan to cover your trip.
  • If you have defined start and end dates, but don’t want or need coverage for trip cancellation, you can go the much cheaper route and choose a travel medical plan .
  • If you’re starting your trip but don’t have a defined return date and need travel medical coverage, you can go with a long-term travel medical plan and renew as you go.
  • If you’ll be gone at least a year and need travel medical coverage, take a look at the annual travel insurance plans . Note, these can be renewed at the end of the term to extend the coverage longer, if you need it.

Now that you know which type of plan you need, you can choose the coverage options.

2. Cover your pre-paid and non-refundable expenses

Protecting your wallet from the loss associated with potential trip cancellations means covering your pre-paid non-refundable trip expenses from potential losses. If you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason , then you’ll be able to get that money back.

Depending on your trip plans, you may not have a lot of pre-paid expenses when you’re traveling by train. Plus, you may purchase your return or continuing travel tickets while enroute, so you won’t cover those from trip cancellation.

When you want protection for potential trip cancellations, add up your known pre-paid trip costs. This may be a round -trip train ticket plus transportation to the station plus your non-refundable lodging when you arrive – anything you will pay for in advance and know you won’t be able to get your money back if you have to cancel.

Use our compare quotes tool and type in your travel dates, those pre-paid trip costs, your age and other details and get quotes from many travel insurance companies.

3. If traveling outside your health care network, get medical coverage

Whether you’re traveling by train, car, airplane or ship the concern that you might have to pay for emergency medical treatment if you are injured or become ill remains the same.

If your health insurance plan doesn’t extend coverage to where you’re going – and most health insurance plans limit their liability to within a geographic range – then you’ll be paying for your medical care with your credit card. Medical care if expensive everywhere and even out-of-network costs can be very high if say the entire family gets sick or in a car accident.

Check with your health insurance plan to determine if you’ll have coverage and to what level. If you’re traveling to an area where you’ll be paying out-of-network costs, the small investment in coverage for emergency medical and dental expenses is often worth it. If you’re buying a travel plan with trip cancellation coverage, then some travel medical is nearly always included so you’ll just need to pay attention to the plan limits and make sure you have enough. See How Much Travel Medical and Evacuation is Enough for clues.

4. Travel delays occur with train trips too – can you afford a long delay?

If the train is delayed from leaving for some reason – weather, natural disaster, etc. – then you’ll likely get your money back. The actual amount you get and how you go about getting it varies from company to company, but of course the costs relative to your travel delay aren’t isolated to your transportation expenses any more than they are if you’d traveled by airline instead.

If you’re delayed in arriving at the train’s departure due to:

  • a traffic accident
  • a stolen passport
  • a natural disaster

… and other reasons, then you’ll be able to make a claim for unexpected expenses like lodging and alternative transportation on your travel insurance plan.

If you’re buying a package plan to cover potential trip cancellations, you’ll have some travel delay coverage with your plan. If you’re buying a travel medical plan, or an annual plan, you may have less or no coverage for travel delays, so be sure to think about the potential for delays, examine your wallet, and review the coverage.

5. Lose a passport and you’re left at the border

Border crossings are controlled with train travel just like they are with airline travel. The form of identification you carry must be valid if you are to cross the border and, in many cases, it can’t be too close to expiring. Original, valid identification is required and passengers are responsible for verifying that their identification is accurate and correct.

Lost passports are a concern not only prior to a trip, but during the trip as well. If your passport is lost or stolen on your trip, you could be in a bad situation and the train could very well leave without you. In that case, a travel insurance plan can help out with travel assistance services to help you replace your passport and find lodgings.

6. It’s still necessary to protect your baggage on train trips

When you travel by train, your bags are still at some risk of loss and/or delay. If you check your bags they could be routed onto the wrong train although the risk is far less than it is with the airlines. The risk of baggage loss, however, is the same and it’s important to remember that train operators limit their liability when it comes to carry-on and checked bags just like the airlines do.

Baggage coverage with your travel insurance plan extends beyond the transportation portion of your trip too and goes with you wherever you travel. If your bags are stolen anywhere along your trip, then you can make a claim on your travel insurance plan and receive reimbursement up to the plan limits.

On top of the standard trip delay, cancellation and interruption coverage, you can purchase CFAR coverage, coverage for adventure and sports activities and a pet care add-on, which can cover illness or injury for your pet when traveling with you, or extra kenneling costs if your trip is delayed if you leave your pet at home.

Does travel insurance cover family members?

Generally, you can insure your whole family on one travel insurance plan, so you won't have to buy separate plans for every traveler. Your travel insurance plan will cover every person listed on the policy.

Does travel insurance cover cancellation due to a death in the family?

In many cases, travel insurance can help you recoup the cost of your vacation if you have to cancel due to a death in your family. However, you'll want to carefully read your policy's definition of a family member, as not everyone in your life could be included.

Bottom line

A family vacation can be a big investment, so it's important to protect yourself in case anything goes awry. Having a travel insurance plan that's easy to access, provides 24/7 support and fits your specific travel concerns and budget can help ensure your trip will go smoothly.

American Express premium credit cards offer some of the best perks in the credit card space. What is covered by trip cancellation and interruption insurance?

train ticket travel insurance

You can find the full terms and conditions of what is generally covered on your respective card in your Guide to Benefits, which can be found through your online account. I'll use the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve as an example.

Here is a rundown of the "covered losses" provided by Amex's trip cancellation and interruption insurance:

  • Accidental bodily injury or loss of life or sickness of either the eligible traveler, traveling companion or a family member of the eligible traveler or traveling companion
  • Inclement weather, which prevents a reasonable and prudent person from traveling or continuing on a covered trip
  • The eligible traveler or his or her spouse's change in military orders
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Call to jury duty or subpoena by the courts, either of which cannot be postponed or waived
  • The eligible traveler or traveling companion's dwelling made uninhabitable
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons

Related: Book carefully if you have multiple Amex cards that offer travel protections

Amex also provides an extensive list of things that are not covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • The eligible traveler's suicide, attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury
  • A declared or undeclared war
  • Mental or emotional disorders, unless hospitalized
  • The eligible traveler's participation in a sporting activity for which he or she receives a salary or prize money
  • The eligible traveler's being intoxicated at the time of an accident. Intoxication is defined by the laws of the jurisdiction where such accident occurs
  • The eligible traveler being under the influence of any narcotic or other controlled substance at the time of an accident, unless the narcotic or other controlled substance is taken and used as prescribed by a Physician
  • The eligible traveler's commission or attempted commission of any illegal or criminal act, including but not limited to any felony
  • The eligible traveler parachuting from an aircraft
  • The eligible traveler engaging or participating in a motorized vehicular race or speed contest
  • Dental treatment except as a result of accidental bodily injury to sound, natural teeth
  • Any non-emergency treatment or surgery, routine physical examinations
  • Hearing aids, eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • One-way travel that does not have a return destination
  • A counterfeit scheduled airline or train ticket; or a scheduled airline or train ticket which is charged to a fraudulently issued or fraudulently used eligible card.
  • Any occurrence while the eligible traveler is incarcerated
  • Loss due to intentional acts by the eligible traveler
  • Financial insolvency of a travel agency, tour operator or travel supplier
  • Any expenses that are not authorized and reimbursable by the eligible traveler's employer if the eligible traveler makes the purchases with a commercial card

If you do find yourself canceling or cutting a covered trip short, here are the basic guidelines provided by Amex on what types of expenses are covered for trip cancellation/interruption:

"If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler's Trip Interruption, we will reimburse you for the nonrefundable amount paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card for the following: 1. The forfeited, non-refundable, pre-paid land, air and sea transportation arrangements that were missed; and 2. Additional transportation expenses that the Eligible Traveler incurs less any available refunds, not to exceed the cost of an economy-class air ticket by the most direct route for the Eligible Traveler to rejoin his or her places of origin.
If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler to temporarily postpone transportation by Common Carrier for a Covered Trip and a new departure date is set, we will reimburse you for the following: 1. The additional expenses incurred to purchase tickets for the new departure (not to exceed the difference between the original fare and the economy fare for the rescheduled Covered Trip by the most direct route); and 2. The unused, non-refundable land, air, and sea arrangements paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card."

What is covered by trip delay insurance?

train ticket travel insurance

Trip delay coverage provides reimbursement for reasonable additional expenses incurred when your trip is delayed due to a covered hazard for more than six hours.

Coverage is limited to $500 per trip and cardmembers are only eligible for two claims each 12 consecutive month period.

Amex outlines what is not covered, which includes the following:

  • Covered losses that are made public or known to the eligible traveler prior to the departure for the covered trip
  • An eligible traveler's expenses paid prior to the covered trip

Filing a claim

When you have a delay or trip cancellation/interruption that you think qualifies for coverage, you can file a claim by calling Amex at 1-844-933-0648 within 60 days of the covered loss.

Trip delay reimbursement requires the following documentation:

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss
  • Receipts - Acceptable documentation includes the following:
  • A statement from the common carrier that the covered trip was delayed
  • Charge receipt
  • Copies of common carrier ticket(s)
  • Receipts for travel expenses

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance requires slightly different documentation.

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss. Acceptable documentation includes:
  • Court subpoenas, orders to report for active duty, physician orders, etc.
  • Copies of your common carrier tickets and travel supplier receipt
  • Your eligible card billing statement showing the charges for the covered trip
  • Copy of travel supplier's cancelation policy

After Amex receives notice of your claim, instructions will be sent on how to send the proof. Typically, you have up to 180 days to file a claim after a delay or cancellation.

Proof of flight delay or cancellation

One of the documents required to file for trip delay reimbursement is a verification form that outlines the reason for the delay or cancellation by the carrier. You can typically get this at the airport when the delay or cancellation is announced, but keep in mind that it may require a supervisor. Each U.S. major airline also has a process for requesting this information after the fact.

Here is an overview of the process that major U.S. airlines require for you to receive a delay or cancellation verification form:

Amex cards that offer car rental insurance

Unfortunately, no American Express credit cards offer primary car rental coverage, although most offer secondary coverage. You can see the entire list of cards that offer secondary car rental protection on the American Express website . However, all American Express credit cards offer an optional "Premium Car Rental Protection policy" that can be added to rentals made using the card for a small fee.

Read our guide on when to use American Express' Premium Car Rental Protection for more details on this coverage option.

You can add Premium Car Rental Protection to any American Express card . TPG has a guide of the best American Express cards , but here are some of the best cards in terms of the return you could receive when renting a car. • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: $450 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4.2% return on car rentals booked directly from car rental companies; no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees)
  • The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express: $0 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4% return on general spending on the first $50,000 in purchases per calendar year and 1x thereafter; 2.7% foreign transaction fee (see rates and fees)

The information for the Amex EveryDay Preferred card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Amex cards that offer baggage insurance

train ticket travel insurance

If you're a frequent traveler, you've likely run into this situation at some point (it's the worst). Over the years, airlines have been working on improving the baggage system by introducing live bag tracking. Regardless, it's still a smart idea to have some protections in place, like baggage insurance.

This is why you need to pay attention to the benefits each of your travel rewards cards offers. Nearly all of Amex's premium rewards cards offer baggage insurance. You can check out the full list of cards and details on American Express's website.

The types of losses it covers: You're covered for losses resulting from damaged, stolen or lost baggage, including both carry-on and checked bags.

When you're covered: To be eligible for coverage, you have to travel on a common carrier, which Amex defines as any air, land or water vehicle (other than a personal or rental vehicle) that is licensed to carry passengers for hire and available to the public. Your rental car, as well as taxis and ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft, would be excluded from this protection.

To receive coverage, you also need to pay for the entire fare with an eligible American Express card or by using Membership Rewards points to book tickets through Amex Travel . Trips booked with miles from other sources — even the cobranded Delta SkyMiles cards from Amex — are excluded. Your trip also isn't covered if you used a combination of miles and dollars unless the miles came from a Membership Rewards transfer. This is a welcome change. A few years ago, a TPG staffer found out the hard way that Amex's policy didn't cover frequent flyer mile awards.

Who's covered: This policy covers both primary and additional cardholders, as well as cardmembers' spouses or domestic partners and any dependent children under 23 years old. In addition, travelers must be permanent residents of one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How much it covers: Most American Express credit cards will cover replacement costs for checked bags and their contents up to $500 per person, although so-called "high-risk items" are only covered for a maximum of $250. These items include jewelry, sporting equipment, photographic or electronic equipment, computers and audio/visual equipment. Carry-on bags are covered for up to $1,250, which is good to know since your belongings could be stolen from the overhead bins.

You'll enjoy additional coverage if you use The Platinum Card from American Express, The Business Platinum Card from American Express, the Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Mercedes-Benz and Morgan Stanley-branded Platinum Card (but not the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card).

The information for the Amex Platinum Mercedes-Benz and Morgan Stanley Platinum card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Amex cards that offer medical assistance

train ticket travel insurance

One of the lesser known benefits of some of Amex's most premium cards is its Premium Global Assistance. This benefit can quite literally be a lifesaver if you or an immediate family member run into any unexpected issues or accident on your trip. For example, this service can help you arrange emergency medical referrals.

All Amex cards have access to Amex's Global Assist Hotline, but the Premium Global Assist Hotline and higher level of coverage are reserved exclusively for the Amex's premium cards:

  • The Platinum Card from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card from American Express
  • American Express Corporate Platinum Card
  • Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card
  • American Express Centurion Card
  • American Express Business Centurion Card

The information for the Amex Centurion and Amex Business Centurion cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

Having a card with trip insurance can save you hundreds of dollars when unexpected hiccups happen in your travel plans. Still, it can be confusing to know what is covered and the right documentation you need to file a claim.

Nothing is worse than getting through an entire claims process only to be denied or have to start over because you don't have the required documentation for the insurance provider. Before you start filing a claim, make sure you have the documents listed above. Keep in mind that a provider may ask for additional documentation related to the incident, so you may have to collect receipts and other forms to help your case.

If you're starting to travel again, it's also a good idea to consider booking refundable travel . Some airlines and hotels even waive cancelation fees and/or change fees for certain fares, which can make last-minute adjustments in the case of emergencies.

Cover and Limitations

The Raileasy insurance policy is insured by UK Underwriting Ltd on behalf of Fortis Insurance Ltd. Passengers may wish to insure their journey, particularly if it is of great distance, involves many connections or is over two hours long. We also recommend taking out insurance in times of extreme weather (such as snow) as this may affect the rail service. The policy covers you from up to £50.00 to up to £5000.00. The amount will vary depending on the type, reasons for claim and the evidence provided. Generally you are covered for the following:

  • Train Cancellation and delays*
  • Abandonment*
  • Missed departure or connection*
  • Personal accident or death*
  • Loss or damage to possessions*
  • Convalescence*

*There are limitations and restrictions to the amount of cover you are entitled to which will affect any claim so we strongly suggest you read the insurance terms & conditions before opting to insure your journey.

Please note if you cancel your journey and the tickets that you have purchased are advance, non refundable tickets you will not be covered for a refund under the policy. If it is likely that you may cancel your journey and are unlikely to make the same journey again we suggest you purchase a flexible ticket, as this is refundable. Alternatively you may wish to re-book for a new date and time as all tickets are amendable. You have within 28 days of the original travel date for a single ticket or original return date for a return ticket to re-book, and tickets are available up to 12 weeks in advance, giving you a large time frame in which to undertake a new journey.

IRCTC changes train travel insurance rules. Here’s how to insure your train journey at 68 paise

Whatsapp

While booking an e-ticket for train journeys through IRCTC, you now have the option to also buy a travel insurance coverage of upto ₹10 lakh at a dirt-cheap premium of 68 paise.

Train travel insurance booked through IRCTC provides a coverage of Rs 10 lakh for death and permanent total disability arising out of any train accident or other untoward incident. Photo: HT

New Delhi: Who cares about buying travel insurance for train journeys? You should, especially when you can get insurance coverage of up to ₹ 10 lakh for financial protection against train accidents and other untoward incidents, including robbery, at a near-zero premium of 68 paise.

You may have overlooked it, but the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp (IRCTC) was so far providing you free and mandatory travel insurance each time you booked a ticket through its website or mobile app. Not anymore.

With effect from September 1, IRCTC’s rules on travel insurance have changed. It is no more mandatory nor free.

While booking tickets on the IRCTC site for your train journeys , you will find an option on “Travel Insurance" where you can choose whether you want travel insurance or not. Since the cost is merely 68 paise, it is advisable to opt for it.

You can insure your train journeys for a premium of just 68 paise if you book e-ticket through IRCTC.

What is covered by train travel insurance

The travel insurance provides a coverage of ₹ 10 lakh for death and permanent total disability arising out of any train accident or other untoward incident. For permanent partial disability you get ₹ 7.5 lakh. The ₹ 2 lakh coverage for hospitalization expenses for injury is over and above the death or disability coverage.

Acts like accident, robbery, dacoity and other violent acts during the train journey are covered by the policy.

Who is eligible for IRCTC travel insurance

Any train passenger who has booked an e-ticket using the IRCTC website or app can buy this travel insurance. Flight ticket booking websites also offer travel insurance, although at a much higher cost, similarly at the time of buying tickets.

However, there is no insurance for children below the age of five.

The travel insurance scheme is applicable only for Indian citizens. Citizens of foreign countries are not eligible for this scheme.

How to file a claim

IRCTC has tied up with 3 insurance companies — Royal Sundaram General Insurance Co. Limited, Shriram General Insurance Company and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited — for the scheme.

Remember, that you are buying an insurance policy from one of these three companies and not from IRCTC . All claims should, therefore, be directed towards the insurance company.

After you book the ticket and buy the insurance, the policy document is sent by the insurer to your email id.

It is important to note that you need to fill in the nomination details at the respective insurance company website. If you don’t do that then the settlement shall be made with legal heirs in case of a claim.

Traveling Amtrak For The First Time? Here Are 14 Things To Know About Amtrak Trains

F eel the need to go outside New York City? Confused about which ride to select? Forget going to out-of-the-way airports or using crowded taxi services. The Amtrak train offers the ultimate solution to meet everyone's travel needs. Meet the luxurious train that makes passengers feel like they're at home. The endless amenities and friendly, respectful staff also make one's trip memorable.

Many Amtrak trains successfully run across hundreds of tracks in the United States (most Amtrak trains offer incredibly beautiful routes , too), and there's also a rich history behind the company. Multiple packages are available for every type of passenger, depending on budget, accommodation choice, and other factors. For a pleasant change, the Amtrak company charges no extra fees, i.e., passengers get what they see, unlike some airliners who keep adding extra surcharges to a customer's expense list till the last moment.

Related: Empire Builder: What Makes This Amtrak Route One Of The Most Scenic In The U.S.

Furthermore, passengers get extra legroom for a long journey compared to a car or air travel. The Amtrak also saves on fuel and protects one's personal vehicle from wear and tear if one uses it to travel. So, with that in mind, let's skim through some important things travelers should know about the trains, such as Amtrak train routes and prices, etc.

UPDATE: 2023/06/06 21:47 EST BY REENA JAIN

More Things To Know About Amtrak Trains For First Time Travelers

Everyone should be aware of a few things before embarking on their first Amtrak journey, regardless of the destination or length of the journey. This list has been updated with additional important information, including train routes, prices, schedules, destinations, and more to help travelers have a stress-free, relaxing, and enjoyable Amtrak journey.

The Amtrak App

The Amtrak app makes it simple for travelers to plan and reserve their trips, check Amtrak schedules and destinations, and receive real-time alerts for delays or changes. Users can access their e-tickets through the app, which provides information on Amtrak train routes and prices. Additionally, the app includes interactive maps that help passengers track the whereabouts of the train and get knowledge of the schedule. The Amtrak app has a user-friendly interface and convenient features, making train travel more simple, reliable, and enjoyable.

Expect Train Delays

Amtrak trains need to stop at some places to let large freight trains pass because they share the same tracks. It can result in unforeseen delays in travel times, especially on longer, cross-country routes. For instance, the California Zephyr from Chicago to Denver may need to stop before the Moffat Tunnel to allow a freight train to pass, delaying Amtrak schedules. Therefore, researching Amtrak schedules and destinations is beneficial before making travel plans.

Making A Pre-Departure Checklist Is Helpful

Passengers will require a number of items, including those necessary and desirable for a stress-free and memorable Amtrak trip. Some of these—like an ID—are necessary, while others are worthwhile for an enjoyable Amtrak journey.

Identification

Passengers must have a photo ID or passport with them.

Train Tickets

Passengers should have hard copies of their tickets or electronic copies of their tickets on hand.

Travel insurance

It's essential to protect oneself from unanticipated travel mishaps.

Passengers who will need to take any medication while traveling must bring it with them.

Other Essentials

Personal care items, snacks, beverages, books, and some forms of entertainment are desirable (but not necessary) for a comfortable trip, particularly on long Amtrak routes.

Stations Have Different Stopover Times

The train makes scheduled stops at various stations during a trip, and the stopover time varies depending on the type of station. If a station is a rest stop, the stopover time is comparatively longer than that of a passenger drop-off and pick-up location. Knowing if a specific stop is a designated rest stop where passengers are permitted to disembark is preferable for those who want to smoke because smoking is not permitted on the train or simply want to move around the station.

Reasonable Ticket Prices

Amtrak tickets are reasonably priced! The average price of a ticket from New York to Atlantic City is about $94 (although Amtrak's famous roomettes typically cost much more ). It is pretty budget-friendly compared to any airline fare on the same route, and it is not even the lowest price out there. The cheapest tickets on this Amtrak route can even be found for only $82.

The best thing is to avoid rush hour and book your Amtrak tickets well in advance. Plus, a cool tip: Amtrak offers saver fares on each route, where passengers can save up to 20% compared to the standard Coach fare when booked at least 7 days in advance. Furthermore, Amtrak fares for seniors (aged 65 and up) are 10% less than the standard fare on most trains in the United States, and seniors (aged 60 and up) pay 10% less for cross-border services operated by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

Plenty Dining Choices

Amtrak offers many dining choices to its customers. There is something tasty and appetizing for every passenger, from adults to kids. Some of these main options include:

Passengers can access the café, which is open to passengers from all classes of the train from the early morning until late at night. Whether business or economy class, there are snacks, drinks, and food items for everyone.

  • Traditional Dining

Traditional dining service for passengers in private rooms is provided in the dining car as a complimentary exclusive offering.

  • Flexible Dining

Exclusive offer to First Class passengers to eat at flexible timings. Special diet menus are also available at Amtrak for customers with specific dietary requirements. The food menu comes with a detailed calorie breakdown as well.

A Variety Of Accommodations

The Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City offers various services and accommodations. Among the expert tips for first-time Amtrak passengers is to check the various room options available in order to best fit the needs and budget of a passenger.

  • Seating Options

Even the Coach class has the best comfy seats. Imagine reclining sofa-like seats with spacious areas. The addition of multiple amenities combines to make the trip a relaxing one! For passengers with mobility impairments, Amtrak provides accessible seating arrangements.

  • Private Rooms

Amtrak provides a unique luxurious experience to its passengers by offering private rooms to First Class. If one wants privacy and their own space on a short trip with added comfort, then a private room booking is the perfect step.

Related: California Zephyr Vs. Southwest Chief: Which Amtrak Train Route Is More Scenic?

Wi-Fi On Board

The Amtrak train comes with complimentary Wi-Fi during traveling. The speed of Amtrak Wi-Fi is less than a passenger’s home or work Wi-Fi network. Furthermore, the same Wi-Fi gets shared by all the passengers on the Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City. So, each passenger should try to surf the internet in such a limited way as not to overburden the network for the other onboard users.

The key is not downloading large files or streaming heavy videos online and keeping fellow passengers in mind while using the shared Wi-Fi. That is why limited access is provided by Amtrak so that more onboard bandwidth is available to all passengers. Access to websites with objectionable content is also restricted in this shared onboard Wi-Fi.

Onboard Upgrades

The trains are divided into classes: Coach, Business, and First Class. All these classes differ from each other, with a different set of rates and amenities for each of them. So, if space is available as unoccupied in a class, one can upgrade from one's original class to that higher class seating. It can be from Coach to Business or Business to First Class.

This smart feature can change the outlook of one's whole journey. Passengers only need to speak to the conductor onboard. They might inform about the availability of such an upgrade and let passengers purchase a new class seat.

Passengers Can Bring A Bicycle Along

Amtrak offers its customers the opportunity to bring their bicycles along. One can explore the stops along the way during a train journey - and what better way to do that than by bike? Ride the rails on board the train with a bike - sounds awesome! Amtrak offers several different services to transport a customer’s bike onboard.

Remember, though, that each train has different equipment and loading procedures that decide what service will be offered. The starting and ending destination stations also determine how or what is allowed by Amtrak regarding one's bicycle. For carry-on/train side, bicycles up to 50 lbs are allowed. Here, standard bicycle sizes apply with a maximum tire width of 2 inches.

Enjoy Guest Rewards

Amtrak offers a guest rewards system to its customers . The points earned can be used to travel on trains, stay at hotels, and shop.

  • Earning Points

Customers can earn guest rewards by earning points through various means, both on and off the train. Passengers can earn 2 points for every $1 spent.

  • Redeeming the Points

Customer of Amtrak can easily redeem their earned points. The reward travel begins at just 800 points, with train travel allowed to over 500 destinations.

  • Member Benefits

Becoming an Amtrak member rewards customers for every ride on and off the train.

  • Bonus Points

One can earn 20,000 bonus points with the new Amtrak Guest Rewards® Preferred Mastercard®. Customers can even choose from over 350,000 hotels worldwide to stay at using their collected points.

Passengers Can Bring Pets

Pets are allowed to travel on Amtrak. However, like with air travel, there are restrictions. Dogs and cats can come on trips that can take up to seven hours on most Amtrak routes in a pet carrier - of course, for a small fee. The pet carrier must also be spacious and highly ventilated, allowing for free movement of the animal, and the weight of the pet and carrier combined must be under 20 lbs.

Things to Note About Pets on Amtrak Trains

  • Service animals are readily welcomed on all Amtrak services as they are not included in the pet category.
  • Pets are not allowed to travel as baggage. A pet must travel with its human counterpart on a train.
  • Only dogs and cats are allowed to travel as pets on Amtrak, and pets must be at least eight weeks old and up to date on all vaccinations.
  • Amtrak highly recommends making pet reservations in advance of one's trip.

Baggage Limits

With Amtrak, customers can shed their baggage worries as the company handles everything meticulously. As baggage, a customer may bring 2 carry-on items. Here, limitations apply regarding weight and size. So, browse them beforehand. Checking this guide on what to pack for an Amtrak train ride may also be handy in terms of prioritizing what to bring (and what not to bring to save baggage weight and space).

Similarly, for checked luggage, each traveler can bring 4 bags, 2 are registered as free, and the other 2 are at $20 per bag. Again, size/weight limitations apply. For special items of baggage that require special handling or are outside the normal baggage category, Amtrak may ask for additional packing requirements and service fees. Amtrak also prohibits certain items onboard trains for security purposes.

Going with unreserved seating on a packed train? No worries. Travelers can find a Red Cap (baggage porter) to escort them to the train. They can access the track before the masses and carry their bags. Red Cap services are free, but a generous tip is recommended.

No Security Line No Waiting

Amtrak lets passengers simply go to the track and get on the train. There is no security line blockage as there is at the airport. With a reduction in airport TSA staff and more passengers flying, travelers need to get to the airport about two hours before their flight just to have enough time to check in or check a bag and clear security.

With Amtrak travel, one's ticket might be scanned before entering the platform or scanned onboard, but there is no waiting line. On the other hand, Amtrak recommends arriving 30 minutes before one's train departs.

Booking Train Tickets? Here’s How IRCTC’s Travel Insurance Option Works

Share

Indian Railways allows a passenger to get an insurance cover of up to Rs. 10 lakh on online train bookings via its e-ticketing arm IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation). The premium for such an insurance cover is 49 paise per passenger inclusive of all taxes, according to IRCTC’s website – irctc.co.in. The IRCTC travel insurance scheme is offered to potential passengers on an optional basis, however, if the option is exercised, it is compulsory for all passengers booked under one PNR (Passenger Name Record), according to the IRCTC website. While booking train tickets on IRCTC, through its website or mobile app, users can find the option under the “Travel Insurance” section.

Here are 10 things to know about IRCTC travel insurance scheme:

1. The optional insurance scheme is applicable only for Indian citizens who book their e-tickets through either the IRCTC website or its mobile app.

2. In case a passenger opts for insurance , the claim/liability is applicable between the insured and the insurance company.

3. The coverage for the IRCTC travel insurance scheme is applicable for each passenger under the PNR in case of death, permanent total disability, permanent partial disability and hospitalization expenses for injury and transportation of mortal remains following rail accident or untoward incident, according to the IRCTC website.

4. The travel insurance scheme is kept uniform for all classes.

5. On opting for the insurance policy, the customer receives the policy information through SMS and on the registered email IDs, directly from insurance companies along with the link for filling nomination details. The policy number can also be viewed from ticket booked history from the IRCTC page.

6. After the booking of ticket, the nomination details are supposed to be filled at respective insurance company’s website. In case nomination details are not filled, then the settlement is made with legal heirs, if the claim arises, according to IRCTC .

7. In case of short termination of trains due to any reason, if the passenger opts for the alternate mode of transportation arranged by railway up to the destination station, then this part of the journey of the passenger is also covered under the policy taken by the passenger.

8. In case of diversion of train due to any reason, the coverage is applicable for the diverted route.

9. Once the premium is paid by the passengers no cancellations is allowed. Accordingly, no refund of are made in all cases including wait-listed ticket.

10. The optional travel insurance is, however, not provided for the children below five years of age, according to the IRCTC portal.

Step 1: Visit the IRCTC website

The first step to getting IRCTC travel insurance is to visit the official website of IRCTC . Once you’re on the homepage, click on the ‘IRCTC insurance’ tab, which is located on the top right corner of the page.

Step 2: Enter your PNR number

After clicking on the ‘IRCTC insurance’ tab, you’ll be redirected to a new page where you’ll be asked to enter your PNR number. PNR, or Passenger Name Record, is a unique reference number that is assigned to each passenger and is printed on the train ticket.

Step 3: Select the insurance option

Once you’ve entered your PNR number, you’ll be presented with two options for insurance – ‘Optional Travel Insurance’ and ‘Mandatory Travel Insurance’. The ‘Optional Travel Insurance’ option is available for passengers who want to purchase insurance voluntarily, while the ‘Mandatory Travel Insurance’ option is applicable to all passengers except for those who have already purchased insurance from any other source.

Step 4: Make the payment

After selecting the insurance option, you’ll be directed to a payment gateway where you’ll need to make the payment for the insurance. The insurance premium is calculated based on the fare of the ticket, and the minimum amount is Rs. 0.49.

Step 5: Receive the insurance policy

Once you’ve made the payment, you’ll receive the insurance policy in your email inbox. The policy will contain the details of the coverage, including the sum assured, the duration of the coverage, and the terms and conditions.

Getting IRCTC travel insurance is a simple and hassle-free process that can be completed in just a few minutes. By purchasing travel insurance, you can protect yourself from the financial losses that may arise due to unforeseen events during the train journey. So, the next time you book a train ticket on IRCTC, make sure to opt for travel insurance for a safer and more secure journey.
