tourism development of india

World Tourism Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the foundation of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a specialised agency of the United Nations which promotes responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism. This year’s theme of World Tourism Day is Tourism and Green Investment, which highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for People, for the Planet and for Prosperity, to enable tourism to deliver on its massive potential to provide opportunities for people, to build resilient, to accelerate climate action and greater sustainability for the planet and deliver inclusive prosperity around the pillars of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Tourism forms a critical part of India’s economy as it is a key driver of economic growth and job creation. The Ministry of Tourism’s India Tourism Statistics 2022 states that the Travel and Tourism sector created 79.86 Mn jobs, including direct and indirect ones. Moreover, 15.34% of the jobs created in 2019-2020 were in this sector. In terms of GDP, during 2019-2020, the tourism sector’s direct and indirect contribution was 5.19%. India’s ranking in the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) is 54th in 2021.

In 2021, over 6.19 Mn foreign tourists travelled to India, fetching us foreign exchange earnings of $8.79 Bn, the 14th highest in the world. It is important to mention that during this period, tourism was among the worst-hit sectors due to the pandemic. It is estimated that India's Tourism Sector will achieve the pre-pandemic level of foreign exchange earnings of $30 Bn and 15 Mn foreign arrivals by mid-2024, totalling a $50 Bn GDP contribution from Tourism.

Further, it is estimated that India’s tourism sector will grow at 7-9% CAGR in the coming decade. By 2030, it will contribute $250 Bn — $56 Bn $ in foreign exchange earnings and 25 Mn foreign arrivals — to GDP, creating 137 million jobs.

The government is committed to realising the potential of the tourism sector sustainably to ensure that the tourist spots and wildlife-sensitive places are preserved for a long so that future generations also visit them. Toward this end, the government has taken various steps.

National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism was formulated by the Ministry of Tourism in 2022 to mainstream sustainability in the Indian tourism sector and ensure more resilient, inclusive, carbon-neutral and resource-efficient tourism while safeguarding natural and cultural resources.  The comprehensive strategy document identified seven strategic pillars to make India a global destination for sustainable and responsible tourism: Promoting Environmental Sustainability; Protecting Biodiversity; Promoting Economic Sustainability; Promoting Socio-Cultural Sustainability; Scheme for Certification of Sustainable Tourism; IEC and Capacity Building; and Governance, and emphasised on the synergy between 16 ministries of the union government, state governments, local government institutions, industry, NGOs, local communities.

National Strategy for Ecotourism was drafted by the Ministry of Tourism in 2022 after considering the Ecotourism guidelines of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the National Strategy for Rural Tourism, and the National Strategy Sustainable Tourism. It was designed to develop an enabling ecosystem for the growth of ecotourism in the country.   The strategy emphasised creating synergies amongst the 8 ministries of the Central government, State Governments, Panchayati Raj Institutions, conservation NGOs and the private sector to develop ecotourism in the country. For the holistic development of the industry, the following pillars were identified: State Assessment and Ranking; State Strategy for Ecotourism; IEC, Capacity Building and Certification; Marketing and Promotion; Destination and Product Development; Public-Private and Community Partnerships; Governance and Institutional Framework.  Among other steps, the strategy also envisaged ranking the States based on the globally recognised parameters of ecotourism. It will foster competitiveness and encourage mutual learning among all states.

Draft National Tourism Policy 2022 recognises tourism as a global opportunity for India and advocates sustainable and responsible growth of the tourism sector in the country. The main objective of the Policy is to make India a leading destination for sustainable and responsible tourism by minimising the negative impact of tourism on social, environmental, and economic aspects and maximising the positive impact. The Policy will act as a roadmap to achieve a $1 Trillion contribution of the tourism sector to GDP by the year 2047.

Travel for LiFE campaign was launched by the Ministry of Tourism in association with CNA-ST in 2021. The campaign aims to encourage the 300 Mn domestic tourists in India to shift towards responsible behaviour and mindful resource consumption while travelling.

Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0 was rolled out with the aim of developing sustainable and responsible tourism destinations in the country. The revamped scheme envisages enhancing the contribution of tourism to the local economies; Creating jobs, including self-employment for local communities; Enhancing the skills of local youth in tourism and hospitality; Increasing private sector investment in tourism and hospitality; and preserving and enhancing the local cultural and natural resources.

Sustainable Tourism for India Criteria and Indicators (STCI) aims to benchmark sustainable tourism practices for various tourism business enterprises, mainly accommodation units and tour operators, for STCI certification. The guidelines make it mandatory to ensure effective sustainable management, heritage protection, sharing social and economic benefits with the local community, conserving the environment, carrying capacity, and minimising negative impacts.

Policies of States: Various tourism-dependent states like Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh have made policies to promote sustainable tourism while protecting rich biodiversity and natural wealth.

As illustrated above, the tourism sector in India has enormous potential as it is a multi-sectoral activity. The government is ambitiously promoting the industry to enable it to achieve $1 Trillion while ensuring that the pressure of tourists is within the country’s carrying capacity.

Development of Tourism in India

Tourism in India holds immense potential as a significant contributor to the country’s economy, despite facing various challenges. With its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and historical monuments, India has always been a magnet for travellers from around the globe. However, the development of this sector has been met with both successes and hurdles.

Current Landscape and Economic Impact of Tourism in India

Tourism in India contributes approximately 4.6% to the nation’s GDP, as per the Ministry of Tourism. Despite not being prioritized by the government, the sector plays a vital role in job creation, supporting over 32 million jobs in 2021. The World Travel and Tourism Council reported that in 2021, tourism generated ₹13.2 lakh crore (US$170 billion), accounting for 5.8% of India’s GDP.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted tourism, leading to a decline in foreign tourist arrivals by 44% in 2022 compared to 2019 figures. Nonetheless, India’s domestic tourism market remains robust, with over 1 billion domestic tourist visits recorded in 2012.

Strengths and Challenges in India’s Tourism Sector

India possesses numerous strengths that bolster its tourism sector. The country’s cultural and natural resources, including historical monuments, scenic landscapes, and diverse wildlife, attract travellers worldwide. Additionally, India’s air transport infrastructure and natural resources are highly regarded globally.

However, the sector also faces several challenges. Infrastructure deficiencies, such as inadequate road networks and outdated facilities, hinder the tourist experience. Moreover, safety concerns, including issues related to women’s safety and petty crime, can deter potential visitors. Additionally, bureaucratic red tape and complex visa procedures have been cited as barriers to tourism growth.

Opportunities for Growth and Development of Tourism in India

Despite the challenges, India’s tourism sector offers ample opportunities for growth and development:

  • Diverse Attractions: From historical monuments and cultural festivals to scenic landscapes and adventure sports, India offers a wide range of tourist attractions. Leveraging these diverse offerings can attract travellers with varied interests and preferences.
  • Cultural Experiences: India’s rich cultural heritage and traditions provide unique experiences for tourists. Promoting cultural tourism, including heritage walks, culinary tours, and traditional art forms, can attract visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences.
  • Medical Tourism: India has emerged as a leading destination for medical tourism, offering high-quality healthcare services at competitive prices. With state-of-the-art hospitals and skilled medical professionals, India attracts patients from around the world for treatments ranging from surgeries to wellness retreats.
  • Rural and Eco-Tourism: There is growing interest in experiential and sustainable tourism experiences, such as rural homestays, wildlife safaris, and initiatives. Encouraging community-based tourism initiatives can benefit rural economies while conserving natural resources.
  • Digital Transformation: Technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the tourism experience, from online booking platforms and virtual tours to digital marketing strategies. Embracing digital innovations can improve accessibility, convenience, and connectivity for travellers.

Government Initiatives to Promote India’s Tourism Sector

The Government of India has taken several initiatives to promote tourism development:

  • Policy Support: The Ministry of Tourism formulates national policies and collaborates with stakeholders to develop and promote tourism. Efforts are underway to simplify regulations, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall tourism experience.
  • Incredible India Campaign: The Incredible India campaign showcases India’s tourism potential through multimedia campaigns, roadshows, and promotional events. It highlights the country’s cultural diversity, natural beauty, and hospitality to attract international travellers.
  • Niche Tourism Promotion: The government is focusing on promoting niche tourism products such as rural, cruise, medical, and eco-tourism. Specialized marketing campaigns and infrastructure development initiatives are aimed at tapping into niche markets and diversifying the tourism portfolio.
  • Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborations between the government, private sector, and local communities are essential for tourism development. Public-private partnerships facilitate investment, infrastructure development, and skill enhancement in the tourism sector.

Future Outlook For Tourism Development in India

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and other systemic issues, the outlook for tourism in India remains optimistic. With concerted efforts from the government, private sector, and other stakeholders, the sector is poised for growth. Forecasts suggest that tourism could contribute 7.2% of India’s GDP by 2031, underscoring its potential as a key driver of economic development.

In conclusion, tourism development in India presents challenges and opportunities. By addressing infrastructure deficiencies, promoting niche tourism products, and prioritizing safety and security, India can unlock the full potential of its tourism sector and emerge as a premier global destination for travellers.

History of tourism in India: Growth and Development

  • November 22, 2023

Table of Contents

India, one of the world’s oldest civilizations, is a mixture of numerous cultural stories. The country is one of the most sought-after journey destinations within the world, with a wealth of attractions and a rich historical legacy. Stretching from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south, it encompasses an area of 32,87,263 sq. km. India, the 7th-largest state internationally, is distinguished from the rest of Asia by means of its precise topography, that is shaped via mountains and the sea.

History of Tourism Development

In 1945, the authorities of India established a committee headed by Sir John Sargent, who served as the government’s educational adviser at the time. This marked the beginning of deliberate attempts to broaden tourism in India (Krishna, A.G., 1993). Following that, a deliberate technique to tourism improvement was followed in 1956 alongside the second  five year Plan. From the isolated making plans of single unit facilities within the 2nd and 3rd five year Plans, the technique has evolved. With the implementation of the 6th Plan, tourism turned into a key tool for each financial boom and social integration, ushering in a new generation.

But, the tourism industry failed to  take off until the 1980s. The authorities made some essential decisions. In 1982, the National Policy on Tourism was declared. A comprehensive plan for reaching sustainable tourism growth was advanced later in 1988 by using the National Committee on Tourism. A National action Plan was created in 1992, and the National Strategy for Tourism Promotion was written in 1996. The central and state governments, public sector initiatives, and the private sector were acknowledged for their contributions to the increase of tourism in 1997 by the brand new Tourism coverage. It has also been acknowledged that the improvement of tourism facilities calls for the participation of Panchayati Raj establishments, neighborhood authorities, non-governmental agencies, and the youth of the area.

Present Condition of Tourism Sector in India

With 6.23% of India’s GDP and 8.78% of all jobs generated with the aid of the sector, tourism is currently India’s biggest service sector. Over five million foreign tourists and 562 million domestic travelers visit India every year. At a 9.4% annual growth rate, the tourism region in India is anticipated to generate about US$275.5 billion through 2018 from about US$ a hundred billion in 2008.  In addition “Incredible India” marketing campaign, the Ministry of Tourism is the primary organization for the growth and promotion of travel to India.

India’s Tourist Attractions:

India is famous for treating all of its visitors, irrespective of their origins, with richness. Its welcoming customs, diverse population, wealthy cultural legacy, and colorful fairs and fairs furnished tourists with long-lasting draws. Some of the other sightseeing locations are: technological parks and technology museums for science tourism; centers of pilgrimage for non spiritual tourism; beautiful beaches, forests, and natural world and landscapes for eco-tourism; snow, rivers, and mountain peaks for journey tourism; historical past, trains, and accommodations for historical past tourism. vacationers are drawn to yoga, ayurvedic, and herbal fitness .

Overseas tourists primarily purchase Indian handicrafts, particularly rings, carpets, leather goods, ivory, and brass work.

The market research report “Booming Medical Tourism in India” claims that despite the economic downturn, medical tourism is the tourism industry segment in India that is expanding the fastest. The report goes on to say that there is a lot of potential in the medical tourism sector in India. Its allure as a medical tourism destination is increased by elements like the low cost, scope, and variety of treatments offered in the nation.

The market research studies report “Booming medical Tourism in India” claims that notwithstanding the financial downturn, medical tourism is the tourism industry segment in India that is increasing the fastest. The file goes on to say that there is a lot of capacity in the medical tourism sector in India. Its attraction as a scientific tourism destination is extended by means of factors just like the low cost, scope, and variety of remedies supplied in the country.

Advantages of Tourism Industry

Growth in  employment and profits: In India, tourism has grown to be a tool for lowering poverty, creating jobs, and creating sustainable human development. It makes up 8.78% of all jobs in India and 6.23% of the India’s GDP. There are presently about 20 million employed in India’s tourism sector.

Increase in forex profits: In India, tourism contributes significantly to foreign exchange income. This is useful to the state’s stability of payments. At a 9.4% annual growth rate, the tourism sector in India is anticipated to generate approximately US$275.five billion through 2018 from approximately US$100 billion in 2008.

Preservation of the Environment and National Heritage: by designating positive locations as heritage sites, tourism contributes to the preservation of some of historically great places.  For Example, if the Tourism branch had not worked on preserving the Taj Mahal, the Qutub Minar, the Ajanta and Ellora temples, and many others., they would have been destroyed . Similarly, tourism contributes to the upkeep of many endangered species’ natural habitats.

India’s tourism area is expanding and has a enormous ability to reinforce the nations overall financial and social improvement in addition to creating jobs and bringing in considerable amounts of forex. However a lot of extra work desires to be achieved. For tourism in India to make a contribution to the protection and sustainability of the diversity of the country’s natural and cultural environments, ecotourism must to be endorsed. The development of tourism in India has to prioritize the sustainable development of indigenous cultures inside the areas it operates in, while also imparting accommodations and entertainment for tourists in a way that minimizes any negative effect on the surroundings.

India's Tourism Sector on the Rise

Significance of Indian Tourism Sector: India, one of the oldest civilisations in the world, is a multicultural melting pot. The nation is one of the most well-liked tourist destinations globally, owing to its extensive attractions and rich heritage. From the snow-capped Himalayas in the north to the tropical rain forests in the south, India spans an area of 3,287,263 sq. km. The country’s tourism industry has grown significantly due to its rich culture and diversified ecology. India's tourism sector ranks eighth in Gross Domestic Production (GDP) contribution. The revenue of India’s tourism industry stood at US$ 247.3 billion in 2018, representing a 6.7% increase as compared to the previous year and contributing 9.2% of the entire economy. The sector was also one of the largest foreign exchange earners (FEEs).

Rise of Indian Tourism Sector: After the COVID-19 pandemic, many reforms were implemented in India to promote tourism; these policies have significantly boosted the sector. Total FTAs in India surged by 406.6% to 2,764,975 from January-July 2022 compared to the previous year. During this period, the US was the top contributor to FTAs in India, at 25.88%, followed by Bangladesh (18.61%), the UK (10.99%) and Australia (5.16%); the US was among the top 15 source nations. In terms of foreign exchange, India's tourism sector earned US$ 6.96 billion in 2020. This is expected to increase further after the pandemic.

From January-July 2022, the Delhi Airport (among the top 15 major airports in India) accounted for the highest share in FTAs at 31.66%, followed by the Mumbai Airport (13.92%), Chennai Airport (10.41%), Haridaspur Land Check Post (8.82%) and Bengaluru Airport (6.70%). In 2021, India's domestic tourism rose by 11.05%, from 610.21 million to 677.63 million. Growth Drivers for Tourism in India: India has seen a sharp rise in FTAs in recent months. This increase in FTAs could be ascribed to various government policies and India-based factors. A few of the major growth factors are described below.

  • Vaccination Drive: On 16 January 2021, India began its vaccination campaign to immunise the population against COVID-19. The programme's major goal was to deliver free vaccines to every citizen. This campaign was highly successful – almost 200 crore vaccines were distributed in the first 18 months. This aided India's economic opening and made the country a safe tourism destination.
  • Medical and Wellness Tourism: India boasts one of the world's cheapest healthcare systems, with world-class doctors and facilities. The country’s wellness industry is well known around the world. The combination of Eastern healthcare wisdom and Western medical expertise has considerably boosted medical tourism in India. The Indian Government announced the ‘Heal in India’ and ‘Heal by India’ campaigns in May 2022. These programmes’ main aim is to further strengthen the traditional medicine industry and make India a global medical value hub. In 2020, India had 1.83 lakh FTAs for medical purposes.
  • Rise in Domestic Tourism: India’s domestic tourism has grown considerably after the pandemic. This growth could be majorly attributed to increasing dispensable income and a rise in India's working class. The country has registered higher spending on leisure tourism compared to business spending tourism.

Government Initiatives In recent years, the Indian Government has recognised tourism's importance in creating jobs and earning foreign exchange. Accordingly, it has taken various measures to boost domestic and international tourism, which has significantly helped the tourism sector. Some of these measures are described below.

  • Swadesh Darshan Scheme The Swadesh Darshan scheme, a flagship programme, was launched by the Ministry of Tourism in 2014–15. The scheme aims to encourage theme-based tourism to promote, develop, and capitalise on India's tourist potential. As of March 2022, under this scheme, the Ministry of Tourism had invested Rs. 5,500 crore (US$ 687.84 million) and sanctioned over 76 projects in 31 states/union territories. Furthermore, the ministry developed tourism-related infrastructure at more than 500 tourist destinations. In April 2022, the ministry sanctioned 10 new projects under the heritage circuit theme.
  • National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry (NIDHI) NIDHI is an initiative towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat to use technology to empower businesses. This programme aims to understand the hospitality sector’s geographical spread, size, structure and capacity. As of 27 August 2022, a total of 45,152 accommodations were registered under this portal.
  • E-tourist Visa The Indian Government launched this initiative in October 2014. This programme aims to simplify the process of obtaining a tourist visa for foreign nationals. This initiative has helped promote tourism in the country. In 2019, the government granted 2.36 million e-tourist visas.
  • Advertising Campaigns The Indian Government has promoted tourism and showcased the country's rich cultural heritage to the world through its ‘Incredible India’ campaign. The campaign aims to promote tourism in India on an international scale. In recent months, the government has taken various initiatives to promote tourism. For instance, it launched the Italy edition of Incredible India Reconnect 2022, a virtual roadshow, to encourage international tourists to visit India. In May 2022, the Ministry of Tourism showcased India’s different tourism products in the Arabian travel market.

Outlook The Government of India has taken several infrastructural measures to promote tourism in the country; this trend is likely to continue. According to the FICCI, India's travel market is projected to expand to US$ 125 billion by 2027. The tourism and hospitality industry is among the country's largest job providers. In FY20, the tourism sector provided 79.86 million direct and indirect jobs. This trend is expected to continue and help India generate foreign exchange earnings. Moreover, India is likely to focus heavily on the North Eastern states, tapping into the huge potential of the region’s rich culture and heritage and incredible landscape. In February 2022, the Ministry of Tourism sanctioned 16 new projects in the region worth more than Rs. 1,300 crore (US$ 162.58 million); projects like these are expected to promote tourism and help generate jobs and opportunities in the future.

Indian outbound tourists

Why The World’s Top Travel Brands Are Betting Big On Indian Tourists

India’s surging middle class is projected to spend as much as $144 billion a year on international travel by 2030. and hotels, airlines and cities are spending millions to land them., by suzanne rowan kelleher , forbes staff.

L ast week, hundreds of global travel professionals gathered in Delhi for the inaugural Skift India Summit and the opportunity to glean valuable insights from the CEOs of major travel brands, including The Oberoi Group, OYO, Agoda and the country’s flag carrier, Air India. “India is having a moment,” explains Brian Quinn, head of event programming at Skift, “with the India outbound traveler poised to become the biggest global force in coming years.”

A decade ago, you could have said the same about Chinese tourists. Back in 2014, some 117 million Chinese tourists traveled internationally, which was a 20% increase from the previous year. But 10 years and one pandemic later, Chinese outbound travel still hasn’t rebounded to its pre-Covid heights, while the energy and focus of the global tourism machine has shifted southeast—to India.

With more than 1.4 billion people, India now has the world’s largest population and the fifth-largest economy . Outbound travel from India is growing much faster than from any other country, which has led to a flurry of predictions that have travel brands salivating.

“There’s such huge potential,” says Caroline Bremner, head of travel and tourism research at Euromonitor International , which projects 47 million Indian outbound travelers by 2030. “That’s more than doubling from 2019. And then on the spending side, it’s even better, going from $35 billion in 2019 to $84 billion in 2030,” she says. “Essentially, India is jumping up the ranks and will be the sixth-largest outbound source market globally by 2030, after China, the U.S., the U.K., Germany and France.”

A 2023 report by Nangia Andersen , the Indian arm of Andersen Global, forecasts that Indian outbound travel will grow at an 11.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between now and 2032—which roughly aligns with Euromonitor’s prediction for tourist volume. If these projections bear out, then another, wilder prediction may not be so implausible after all: organizers of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), an industry conference to be held in Dubai in May, have touted that India’s outbound market will be worth $144 billion a year by the end of this decade.

And a recent report from McKinsey is similarly bullish on the longer-term prospects for Indian tourism. “India’s outbound travel has the potential to grow from 13 million trips in 2022 to over 80 million in 2040,” the authors write. “If India follows China’s outbound travel trajectory (which it could, due to similarity in population size and per capita income trajectory), then Indian tourists could make 80 million to 90 million trips a year by 2040.”

Given all the hype, travel brands have, naturally, begun heavily courting Indian tourists, often by tapping celebrities as influencers. Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan promotes Dubai and Katrina Kaif, a British actress who makes Hindi-language films, professes her loyalty to Accor. Actor Ranveer Singh appears in ads for Abu Dhabi , while his wife, Deepika Padukone, is the global brand ambassador of Qatar Airways . Meanwhile, Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic gold medalist and world champion in javelin, has been enlisted to promote Switzerland’s spectacular alpine landscapes.

Yet before India’s outbound travel can reach its full potential, industry experts say, the volume of flights in and out of the country—a number mutually decided by the two respective governments—must increase dramatically. There were roughly 14% more flight routes by city pairs to and from India last year compared to 2019, according to data from FlightAware . Right now, airlines are operating just 18 scheduled passenger flights each week from India to the United States—up from 14 in 2019.

Some destinations have made policy tweaks to boost capacity. In late 2022, Canada lifted the cap on the number of flights from India from 35 per week to “unlimited” and gave Indian airlines access to six hubs, including Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, and Vancouver. South Africa Tourism, meanwhile, has teamed up with Ethiopian Airlines to provide faster links between India and Africa. Even Bhutan’s prime minister has emphasized the need to strengthen air connectivity between India and the tiny Buddhist kingdom.

Airlines are taking note of India’s growing importance as well. Most notably, Singapore Airlines inked a deal in late 2022 with Tata Group, paying a reported $250 million for a 25% stake in Air India. Last November, Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong told Forbes Asia of his plans to make India a new hub. “You can just tell how much potential there is,” Goh said. “India is growing but it’s significantly underserved.”

Hotel CEOs are also being seduced by the dizzying economic forecasts. “We just are blessed by the increase of demography in the world and blessed by the increase of households that want to travel,” Sébastien Bazin, CEO of the French hospitality giant Accor, told investors on the company’s most recent earnings call in February. He offered a short lesson on global economics, noting that the world’s emerging middle-class population exploded by one billion over the last 10 years. “Half of those are from India,” he emphasized. “We probably can wisely say that for the next 10 years, demand will no longer grow 3% to 5%, but probably 4% to 6%. You very well could be looking at a 3x demand over supply. And a lot of it, again, has to do with India alone, which is [expected to add] 500 million [to its] emerging middle class.”

“India is definitely an economic bright light,” echoes Bremner, noting that the country’s current 8% economic growth rate is stronger than China’s. Moreover, it shows no signs of slowing down.

Last year, 1.7 million Indian tourists visited the United States, making India the country’s fourth-largest travel source after Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The average Indian tourist also spends money when traveling internationally—roughly $5,252 per trip, according to the last six months of data collected by the National Travel & Tourism Office (NTTO), the agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce that tracks tourism statistics. Comparatively, the typical visitor from the United Kingdom and Brazil spends $2,656 and $3,344, respectively, while the average Japanese tourist spends $3,672. In other words, it takes two British tourists to spend as much as one Indian traveler.

If the United States wants to attract more Indian tourists in the future, experts say it needs to make entering the country much easier. “I am a firm believer that less friction will lead to more travel,” says Omri Morgenshtern, CEO of Agoda, the largest online travel agency in Asia. “Friction can be removed by adding direct flights, as well as by the introduction of visa waivers or by being able to book accommodation, flights and activities on one app.”

Currently, 62 countries permit Indian travelers to visit without first obtaining a visa—that’s 10 more than in 2016, the year that the Henley & Partners Passport Index launched. But the United States neither grants visa-free entry to Indian tourists nor does it make procuring a visa fast and easy.

While the U.S. is approving more visas for Indians today than in pre-pandemic years, the average visa wait time is still about 10 months, according to the U.S. State Department website . Before a leisure trip to America, an Indian citizen must wait for a visa interview, which can take anywhere from 197 days at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi to 423 days at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai. In comparison, Indian tourists can get a visa for Canada in just 23 days or the United Kingdom in roughly three weeks.

U.S. officials readily acknowledge that visa wait times are a big problem. Speaking at the Skift India Summit on Tuesday, Eric Garcetti, the U.S. Ambassador to India, told conference-goers that President Joe Biden specifically asked him to tackle the backlog. “I bet it’s the only time the United States president has told the ambassador, ‘Please work on visa issues,’” Garcetti said.

Visa waivers have a proven track record and give nations a competitive edge, insists Agoda CEO Morgenstern. After Azerbaijan introduced the ASAN system, which processes electronic visas within three working days of submitting an application, interest from Indian tourists skyrocketed and arrivals increased fivefold in two years. “Thailand and Malaysia both introduced visa waivers for tourists from India late last year, and that led to an immediate increase in searches from India to both markets,” Morgenshtern says, noting that searches for Thailand grow by 46% even though Thailand was already the top searched destination by Indians. “In the two months after the visa waiver came into effect, Bangkok overtook Dubai as the most-booked city destinations for Indians.” Yet the emirate was not to be outmaneuvered. In February, Dubai introduced a five-year multiple-entry visa for inbound Indian travelers.

Another reason why India is such an attractive source market is its youthful population. Only 7% of India’s population is 65 years and older, compared with 14% in China and 18% in the U.S., according to data from a recent report from the Pew Research Center. People under the age of 25 account for more than 40% of India’s population . “ In fact, there are so many Indians in this age group that roughly one-in-five people globally who are under the age of 25 live in India,” notes the Pew report. “Looking at India’s age distribution another way, the country’s median age is 28. By comparison, the median age is 38 in the United States and 39 in China.”

“It’s an extremely well-educated populace, very digitally savvy,” says Bremner, adding that more than 75% of Indian millennials and Gen Xers traveled in 2023, according to Euromonitor data.

“Indian travelers are more engaged with ecotourism and sustainability than their global counterparts. They are open to all kinds of experiences, from luxury to eco-adventure,” Bremner continues. “And, of course, they are high spending. I’m not at all surprised that destinations from Asia to the Middle East and Europe and U.S. are chasing them.”

Uttarakhand launches first-ever helicopter yatra for Adi Kailash, Om Parvat in big boost to religious tourism

Earlier, reaching these holy sites involved a challenging journey - either a long trek or a combination of car travel and walking, confined to a limited window between may and june or september and october..

Anurag Roushan

Pilgrims embarked on inaugural helicopter flight

Traditionally, reaching these sacred sites has been a challenging endeavour, involving either a lengthy trek or a combination of car travel and walking, restricted to specific time frames between May and June or September and October. Today, marking a milestone, 18 pilgrims embarked on the inaugural helicopter flight, signalling a new era of accessibility championed by Trip to Temples.

Adi Kailash, situated in the magnificent Vyas Valley, holds great significance as the second abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Om Parvat, bordering India, Nepal, and Tibet, stands as a natural wonder, sculpted into a perfect "Om" symbol. Previously, the closest vantage point to view Om Parvat was Nabhidang, located 11 km from the Old Lipu Lekh Pass, necessitating a challenging trek.

How will it help devotees?

Trip to Temples, in collaboration with UTDB, has revolutionized the pilgrimage experience. Devotees can now embark on a one-day aerial darshan of both sites, returning the same day which is launched today. From April 15th, a five-day helicopter yatra will commence, with helicopters landing near the holy sites, minimizing walking distances and departing conveniently from Pithoragarh.

Vikas Mishra, CEO of Trip to Temples, expressed unwavering dedication to enhancing accessibility: "We are committed to partnering with the Uttarakhand government to make Hindu pilgrimage destinations more accessible in the region. We continuously explore ways to extend this accessibility for more time period, allowing more devotees to fulfil their spiritual aspirations."

29-year-old Byasdev Rana, a participant from Odisha on the inaugural yatra, described the experience as awe-inspiring. Time and physical limitations had previously hindered his ability to connect with this vital aspect of his faith. Thanks to Trip to Temples and the Uttarakhand government's initiative, he, like countless others, can finally have the darshan of Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.

The upcoming yatra to start on April 15

This upcoming winter yatra will be India's first, offering a mesmerizing view of the snow-covered Vyas Valley, Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) will replace the strenuous trek from Jyolingkong and Nabhidang, ensuring a comfortable journey through the snowy landscape. The yatra will be open from April 15th to May 1st, 2024, and will resume in November, extending its reach until March.

This revolutionary helicopter yatra, spearheaded by Trip to Temples, promises to transform the pilgrimage experience for Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. With breathtaking aerial views, comfortable travel options, and a focus on community development, UTDB and Trip to Temples are ushering in a new era for Hindu pilgrimage tourism in India.

Nepal’s economy to grow by 3.3% in FY24, driven by revived tourism and pickup in hydropower exports

Nepal’s economy to grow by 3.3% in FY24, driven by revived tourism and pickup in hydropower exports

Nepal’s economy is expected to grow by 3.3% in FY24, driven by revived tourism and a pickup in hydropower exports. On the demand side, private consumption will drive growth, supported by a substantial increase in remittance inflows, according to the World Bank’s twice-a-year country development update.

The latest Nepal Development Update, Nepal’s Economy on a Recovery Path, but Private Investment Remains Low, projects a further rebound in growth of 4.6% in FY25. However, the forecast is subject to multiple risks, including a growth slowdown in partner countries, notably India, Gulf countries, and Malaysia which could lead to a drop in remittances and tourism. Further business environment reforms aimed at attracting more private investment will be needed to support medium-term growth.

“Strengthening the implementation of capital expenditure, boosting business confidence, and strengthening Nepal's international competitiveness are key to stimulating economic growth and reducing poverty,” said Faris Hadad-Zervos, World Bank Country Director for Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

The Nepal Development Update is prepared in parallel with the South Asia Development Update, a twice-a-year World Bank report that examines economic developments and prospects in the South Asia region and analyzes policy challenges countries face. The April 2024 edition titled Jobs for Resilience shows growth in South Asia is again higher than any other emerging markets and developing country region in the world, projected at 6% in 2024 and 6.1% in 2025. But this strong outlook is deceptive, says the report. For most countries, growth is still below pre-pandemic levels and is reliant on public spending. At the same time, private investment growth has slowed sharply in all South Asian countries, and the region is not creating enough jobs to keep pace with its rapidly increasing working-age population.

“South Asia is failing right now to fully capitalize on its demographic dividend. This is a missed opportunity,” said Franziska Ohnsorge, World Bank Chief Economist for South Asia. “If the region employed as large a share of the working-age population as other emerging markets and developing economies, its output could be 16% higher.”

The South Asia Development Update recommends a range of policies to spur firm growth and boost employment, including increasing trade openness, improving business climates and institutions, removing financial sector restrictions, improving education, and strengthening legal protection of women’s rights. And these measures would also help lift employment growth and boost productivity, and free up space for public investments in climate adaptation.
