The Grand Tour Ep. 3 Teaser Mentions “Fastest Car In The World”

Strangely, the koenigsegg agera rs is nowhere to be seen..

The Grand Tour Episode 3 Teaser

The Grand Tour is already moving towards its third episode of the new season, though the latest trailer does make a curious claim. We’re given glimpses of the fantastic Bugatti Chiron , with Clarkson’s familiar voice over saying “It’s the fastest car in the world.” Technically speaking, the Chiron is never mentioned by name in the teaser so perhaps he's really referring to the Koenigsegg Agera RS , which is in fact the fastest car in the world. Or – and we suspect this is the case – the segment was filmed during the brief time in which Bugatti held the 0-249-0 mph (0-400-0 km/h) record.

More On The Grand Tour:

Of course, we know that Koenigsegg quietly slipped into the record-setting realm nary a month after Bugatti’s achievement in dramatic fashion, not just stealing the record but obliterating it by over five seconds. Then, Koenigsegg went on to claim the absolute top-speed record for a production car with an average speed of 277.9 mph (447 km/h).

But therein lies another curious question. The Bugatti Chiron technically never had the official title of fastest production car. Prior to Koenigsegg’s record run, bragging rights still belonged to the Chiron’s predecessor, the Veyron Super Sport. But now we’re just splitting hairs – Clarkson and company are known exaggerate every now and again, and it's not like the Chiron is slow. In fact, there’s certainly a chance the 1,500-horsepower hypercar could steal the top speed crown from Koenigsegg, should Bugatti ever decide to give it a try.

The Grand Tour Episode 3 Teaser

In the meantime, it seems Clarkson will be zipping around in a Chiron for the next episode, while James May races skateboarders in a car we’ve come to love, the Kia Stinger . Hammond, presumably still on the mend from his Rimac experience, is shown talking on a microphone.

 • 2018 Kia Stinger First Drive: A Seriously Satisfying Performance Bargain

One thing that will be interesting is whether the trio actually mention the show’s new lap-time wheelman wheelwoman, British GT driver and racing instructor Abbie Eaton. Her non-existent introduction last week was a very awkward moment in what many people felt was one of the best episodes since the three presenters were on Top Gear.

We’ll find out when episode three goes live this Friday on Amazon Prime.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May’s Grand Tour Tenure Is Coming to an End

The Grand Tour’s end comes just weeks after the BBC indefinitely shut down Top Gear.

Getty

NicoDeMattia

The old Top Gear trio of Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May will be hitting your screen as the hosts of The Grand Tour for the final time in 2024. The two final episodes have now been filmed, taking place in Mauritania and Zimbabwe, where the trio we've grown to love will close a chapter that's been three decades in the making.

“We’re done. I have reviewed cars on TV since 1989. That’s 34 years. And after next year, I won’t be doing that any more," Clarkson told The Times .

Since The Grand Tour launched in 2016, after Clarkson was fired from Top Gear for punching a producer, it's gone through several changes. First, it was essentially a Top Gear recreation, with celebrity interviews and an in-studio live show. Then they tightened it up by ditching the celebrity stuff. Eventually, they ditched the live show altogether and just made feature-length specials. And while none of The Grand Tour's iterations managed to capture the magic of Top Gear at its best , it was still one of the most watched shows on Amazon Prime . Millions of people tuned in to watch the automotive equivalent of the Three Stooges (and I mean that as a grand compliment).

Getty

All three hosts have their own projects to pursue outside of The Grand Tour anyway. Clarkson has his farm show and May has a travel show, both of which are also on Amazon Prime , while Hammond still does a lot of work for DriveTribe , while also presenting other TV programs. So they'll still be around, even though The Grand Tour won't be.

This news also comes just a couple of weeks after the BBC decided to indefinitely shut down Top Gear . After host Freddie Flintoff's accident during filming and the subsequent settlement, the BBC decided against renewing the show. Clarkson doesn't blame the most recent trio of Top Gear hosts for not wanting to return, either, specifically Flintoff.

"Richard Hammond was always keen to get back to work [following a crash], whereas Freddie isn’t," Clarkson told The Sun . "I don’t blame him. I know what happened on that awful day and it was horrific."

Getty

Clarkson even said that anyone who wants to take over in Flintoff's spot would come across as "heartless."

In a matter of weeks, the world learned that the two most entertaining car shows on TV are shutting down. We all knew this day was coming soon, as the original Top Gear gang are all either in their sixties or getting quite close, but it's still a little sad to see them go. Sure, their most recent work pales in comparison to the shows from their prime but, like most millennial car nerds, Clarkson, Hammond, and May made an indelible impression on me and the way I look at cars, and I'm sure I'm not alone on that one. Thanks for the memories, chaps.

In this episode of The Grand Tour , each presenter chooses the ultimate classic weapon to drive on the road. Except for James May who doesn’t agree that classics are better and drives the new Honda Civic Type R.

The Trio Compare Classics and A Honda Civic Type R

the grand tour koenigsegg episode

The episode’s primary film is a comparison between a brand-new 1950’s Jaguar, a brand-new 1950’s Aston Martin, and a brand-new 2010’s Honda hatchback. Hammond champions one of only nine new XKSS models painstakingly recreated by Jaguar themselves, which costs $1 million, while Clarkson counters with the Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight, which costs $2 million. They are quite expensive, then. But they make for one hell of a film.

I cannot imagine how much fun this segment would have been to make, and that really shines through in the finished product. It’s truly exceptional, full of beautiful, warmly-color-corrected shots of the two cars racing through Pau, set to a rollicking drum-heavy soundtrack. James then arrives in a Honda Civic Type R, which proceeds to be mercilessly mocked and then sadly not pulled over by the french police after Clarkson and Hammond urge him to speed.

Hammond is later forced to stand outside the hotel all night to make sure his roofless, lockless Jaguar wouldn’t get stolen. May decides to take them from Pau down to Barcelona to prove on track that his Honda is better than the Jaguar and Aston.

After a series of increasingly painful shots of Clarkson slowly mangling the Aston’s synchro-less racing gearbox, Hammond’s car finally succumbs to the fact that it’s a 50’s Jaguar and breaks down, leading to Jeremy having an incredibly awkward encounter with two… good friends (dogging )in a Toyota when he pulls over to help then loses his car in the fog.

On an ancient, disused banked circuit in Spain, the Aston and Jaguar prove to be horrifying on their prehistoric cross-ply tires, while the Honda’s no treat either, even on modern rubber. The Honda nevertheless manages to outpace the Aston on the speed test, turning a 93mph compared to the Aston’s 89.

The Ford GT On The Eboladrome

the grand tour koenigsegg episode

The Ford GT finally gets a turn on the Eboladrome, where it probably should have been in the first place. We get the requisite shots of the GT’s incredible suspension lowering, and some surprisingly brief powerslides indicative of both how much power it has and how much grip it has. Generally standard Grand Tour fare.

Celebrity Face-Off

the grand tour koenigsegg episode

In Celebrity Face-Off, two drummers from bands beginning with P, Stewart Copeland and Nick Mason, take to the track in the F-Type. If not for anything else, you might remember Nick Mason as the guy who lended Top Gear his Ferrari Enzo many moons ago, in return for some very subtle plugs for his new book. You also might remember Jeremy Clarkson as the drummer for the Top Gear band, which was famous for doing nothing famous at all, ever. Mason turns a 1:21.3, smashing Copeland’s more dramatic 1:24.2.

I didn’t really expect to say this, but I think this was definitely one of the strongest episodes of the season. As is very rare, they get through the entire show without a single contrived joke or over-the-top accidents, and it really is petrolhead pornography for the entire hour. It’s 100% worth a watch, even if you’re someone (like me, I admit) who still wasn’t convinced the show was quite living up to its potential.

"The Grand Tour" to return for farewell episode in 2024

C larkson, Hammond, and May are set to officially bid farewell to their program, "The Grand Tour," broadcast on Amazon, as reported by the BBC.

There's good news and bad news for fans. Good news: "The Grand Tour" will return in 2024. Bad news: this will be its final episode. The trio, who rose to fame through the BBC's "Top Gear," have continued their antics on "The Grand Tour," which has been available on Amazon since 2016.

While the initial seasons of "The Grand Tour" boasted a similar number of episodes to its predecessor “Top Gear," the series has recently been limited to sporadically published special productions. It appears that this was the beginning of the end for "The Grand Tour".

According to the BBC, which cited internal sources, a special episode documenting a trip to Zimbabwe will be released in 2024 , marking the official end of "The Grand Tour".

Despite saying goodbye to "The Grand Tour," it doesn't mean that this popular trio will completely vanish from our screen. Each presenter has their own shows on Amazon's platform. As of now, these productions are set to continue.

It's worth noting that "Top Gear," the precursor to "The Grand Tour," is also seeing its end. Following Clarkson, May, and Hammond's departure, the BBC carried on with the series, introducing new presenters. However, this came to a halt in 2022, when one presenter, Freddie Flintoff, sustained serious injuries in an on-set incident. Nearly a year following the accident, the broadcaster announced its decision to discontinue the program.

Episode Guide

This episode of Top Gear begins with Jeremy apologising for the Stig driving a Jaguar C-Type in Series 2 Episode 4 . Various newspapers got hold of the story and claimed Top Gear ruined the valuable car, with headlines such as “Top Gear ‘yobs’ wreck £ 1m car” and “Top Gear hooligans”.

Jeremy then kicks off this “hooligan” episode by looking at the new Swedish Koenigsegg CC8S. On paper, the CC8S sounds like the most boring supercar in the world. But Jeremy thinks this is not true, “It’s lighter, more aerodynamic and amazingly more powerful than a McLaren F1. It’s supercharged V8 pumps out a simply colossal 655bhp. Koenigsegg say it will go from 0-60mph in 3 seconds dead and on to a top speed of 245mph – now if those figures turn out to be accurate this will be quite simply the fastest road car… in the world.”

Sadly, the runway on the Top Gear test track isn’t long enough to test the top speed, but the fastest Jeremy has ever been down it is 170mph in a Pagani Zonda. So, the challenge was set. After the Top Gear team positioned large “BRAKE” signs before the end of the runway, Jeremy sets off and eventually hits 280kph, or 174mph – the fastest car Top Gear has ever tested. Jeremy praises the car further, by saying “This goes like nothing I’ve ever driven – and it feels like nothing I’ve ever driven! The clutch is heavy, the steering is heavy, the gearbox is heavy… it’s just a tonne and a half of testosterone! You could drive this thing to the gym, turn around and go straight home again and you’ll have had more exercise than if you’d done a workout. It is absolutely brutal!”

Back in the studio, James and Richard do their usual Insider Dealing segment, with deals on the Volvo S60 diesel and C70 Convertible. He also mentions Citroen are paying for VAT on selected models.

Jeremy returns to the Koenigsegg CC8S and the Stig takes it for a lap – with a time of 1:23.9, which is just one-tenth of a second slower than the Zonda. Jeremy also mentions how he felt nervous before the speed run because engineers from Koenigsegg had asked him if they could put gaffer tape around the windscreen.

Jeremy introduces the Star In A Reasonably Priced Car, Neil Morrissey. Jeremy has little to talk to Neil Morrissey about, as they were on the same Parkinson episode just a few weeks previous. Neil goes for a lap in the Liana and gets a 1:49.00.

Next up, Richard attempts to rescue this “Safety” themed episode by driving the new Renault Megane in London. The new Megane is the only small family hatchback to score a 5-star Euro N-Cap safety rating. Richard thinks the Megane is “cutting edge cool” and makes the Ford Focus look a bit “last week”. Richard also thinks the interior is clever and that the car is priced well. But since safety is one of the most important aspects, he drives the Megane to the Top Gear Test Track… for a crash test. With “Top Gear brave person” Lee behind the wheel, the Megane is crashed at 30mph into the side of another car. The car survives the impact very well – with the front door still able to be opened. Lee mentions significant heat being generated by the air bags deflating, and that he was glad he went to the toilet before the test, as the seat belt had pulled him hard against the seat. In a sign of how old this episode is, Richard pulls out an old style Nokia phone “to call Renault”.

Back in the studio, Richard and Jeremy look at how other cars have performed in crash tests. Surprisingly, a Ford Fiesta performs better than the Land Rover Freelander. They then proceed to look up crash test ratings for the cars of audience members.

Jeremy then introduces the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage, “This is, I think, the most beautiful car I have ever seen. It doesn’t look wrong from any angle. It’s got a 4.3L V8 engine in the front, rear wheel drive with a gearbox at the back for perfect weight distribution. It’s light, it’s going to be very, very fast and it’ll cost a very reasonable £ 70,000. So, have you just ordered a Porsche 911 recently?” *bursts out laughing*

In the news, Richard introduces the Haynes Baby manual, James mentions a new high-tech car alarm which sends you an email, text-message or fax if you car has been stolen. Jeremy introduces the new BMW M3 CSL and a device you clip behind your ear, which emits a loud warning tone when your head looks down, in case you have fallen asleep while driving.

Next up, Jeremy looks at the history of the Hummer, before going for a drive in the Hummer H1 through a few English villages. Jeremy mentions a few drawbacks to it, “The four seats – and there are only four – are so far apart they’re in different time zones. Then you’ve got the enormous, rattly 6.5L turbo-diesel engine sort of here in the middle of the room, and then you’ve got the torque converters in the wheels which sound like giant nuclear-powered pepper grinders. Small wonder that Arnold Schwarzenegger was so good at shouting in his films.”

Jeremy then introduces the new Hummer H2 and says its “immensely good”. Though based on a Chevrolet Tahoe platform, it has a manly, chunky interior and tons of space, exciting Jeremy in a way similar to the Range Rover. He describes it as “a Roman orgy, a Hawaiian BBQ, a Viennese Waltz and a helicopter gunship attack on Las Vegas all rolled into one. It’s fabulous! What you have to understand is the H2 makes you feel like a seven year old boy – and for that alone, you have to love it.” Back in the studio, neither Richard or James are impressed with the H2. James calls it “revolting” and Richard recalls a time he saw one reverse over the top of a BMW Z4.

Richard then drives something which is bigger and tougher than the H2, the £500,000 Talon riot control vehicle. Featuring an armour plated body that can be electrified with 20,000 volts, room for 14 gunners each with their own shooting hatch, a fridge, a toilet and an on-board oxygen system. The cockpit also contains a control panel with lots of interesting buttons, such as one marked “Grenade Launcher”. Richard uses the roof mounted water cannon to put out a fire and then drives through a Portakabin at high speed.

The boys are back with a brand new episode of The Grand Tour. This time, they are headed to Mauritania for their penultimate adventure – and viewers can watch it now!

In the latest episode, titled Sand Job, the trio will follow in the footsteps of the legendary Paris-Dakar rally, but they'll have to take on their adventure in modified sports cars.

It'll no doubt be an exciting episode, with Richard Hammond previously teasing a "surprise" for the episode.

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com ahead of the launch, Hammond revealed: "There was there was a surprise arrival in [the] minefield, because it's [Mauritania] still on the red list in terms of travel, and the last thing you want in or near a minefield is a surprise.

'There was a scary encounter with some Ebola carrying bats. My car, the Aston Martin, was the troublesome one of the bunch because it comes from an era when cars were just becoming intelligent... and that gave me no end prompt. Plus, the guys just destroyed me as well. There was quite a bit of pranking."

When will the next episode of The Grand Tour be released?

James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond all stood in the desert with their hands on their hips

The next instalment of The Grand Tour became available to watch on Friday 16th February on Prime Video . It's out now!

The Grand Tour locations

The trio have previously filmed in far-flung locations such as Colombia, Vietnam and Switzerland - and next time will be no different.

The newest instalment will see the trio head back to Africa, as they have this time filmed the show in Mauritiana, a country in the Northwest of the continent.

Speaking of the location, Clarkson said: "I love deserts, so I've always wanted to do the Sahara, but it's difficult to go there; you can't go to Mali or Libya or Algeria or Chad. You can't go to the top of Nigeria.

"And then it was really a question of finding the most inappropriate cars for trans-Sahara travel, and I think we did a pretty good job on that."
