Itinerary idea in detail

Private customized tour. Ask us about booking your international flights at our preferred rates.

Arrive in Santiago after your international flight. From the airport, you will have a private transfer into the city and take a half-day tour of Santiago to get acquainted with the city.

Santiago, Chile

This morning you will have a private transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Punta Arenas. Once in Punta Arenas you will be met by a representative from your all-inclusive lodge and transferred with other guests into Torres del Paine National Park.

Torres del Paine, Chile

Today you will be out exploring the highlights of Torres del Paine. Excursions can range from gentle walks to full-day treks. Horseback riding and more cultural outings can also be arranged.

Sunrise in Torres del Paine National Park

Trekking is a highlight of any visit to Torres del Paine. You can opt for something on the easy side like taking the Paine Mountain Path or full-day treks that will take you to the base of the famous towers.

Rio Paine, Torres del Paine National Park

The lodge will arrange a shared transfer across the border into Argentina. You will be dropped off at your hotel in El Calafate and have the afternoon and evening at your leisure.

El Calafate in Autumn (April), Argentina

Leave the town and spend the day on a working estancia on the Patagonian steppe, where you will learn about the people who call Patagonia home. Of course, no visit would be complete without a traditional asado.

The Perito Moreno Glacier, El Calafate

This morning you will have a private transfer to the airport for your flight to Ushuaia. Upon arrival, you will have another private transfer to your hotel. The afternoon has been left at your leisure in anticipation of the journey ahead, but Tierra del Fuego offers plenty in the way of exploration, and excursions can be arranged.

Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia

In the morning, enjoy some free time to explore the city before you board the ship and set sail along the Beagle Channel. Settle into your cabin.

Beagle Channel, Ushuaia

You will enter the Drake Passage at around 2am, and the day will be spent making your way across this notorious stretch of water. Surprisingly, an amazing amount of wildlife can be seen on the way, with wandering albatross, Wilson’s petrel and even blue whales present.

You'll come to the end of the Drake Passage and start to spot the first icebergs as you approach the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.

This day will be made up of shore landings and excursions on the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands such as Petermann, Livingston, and Deception. There will generally be two excursions per day.

Today you'll hopefully have your first encounter with a penguin colony. Depending on the season you may see them building their nests, guarding their eggs, or raising their newborn chicks.

You may also have the chance to camp on the ice, go kayaking or even snorkeling or diving. More and more adventure options are being added to Antarctic expeditions so please do ask if you are interested.

Zodiac cruises are a staple of any Antarctic expedition and will get you up close with icebergs, shipwrecks, and wildlife.

Start crossing back over the Drake Passage. Take the opportunity to stand on deck to take in your last glimpses of Antarctica, and try and check off any more wildlife that remains to be seen.

At sea crossing the Drake Passage. The ship's crew will be holding numerous lectures and screenings throughout the day.

You’ll arrive in Ushuaia in the early morning and transfer to the airport for a flight to Buenos Aires, where you’ll spend the night.

La Boca, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Antarctica & Patagonia Expedition

  • Join our austral spring expedition cruise from Valparaíso, through Patagonia, and down to Antarctica.
  • See penguins in the midst of their courting and nesting rituals!

From Valparaíso, tour the Chilean fjords and waterways of Patagonia, stopping at rustic Castro, isolated Puerto Edén, and Puerto Natales, where you may have the chance to hike in Torres del Paine National Park. Weather permitting, we’ll attempt to land at legendary Cape Horn before crossing the Drake Passage.

Guided by your Expedition Team, you’ll spend four incredible days exploring Antarctica’s immense, pristine icescapes. Springtime is courting season, meaning you will be able to observe penguins’ mating rituals. There is no set schedule. We adapt our itinerary and seize every opportunity to get closer to nature and enjoy unique experiences while ice-cruising and on landings.

Standard Activities

About the antarctica & patagonia expedition, itinerary day to day, valparaíso, a unesco gem.

Discover Valparaíso, the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’

Your Antarctica and Patagonia expedition cruise begins in colorful Valparaíso. Known as the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’, this friendly UNESCO-listed city is built on steep hillsides overlooking the ocean.

Filled with enticing scents and sounds, it’s an exhilarating maze of alleyways and barrios, colorful houses, and ‘mercados’ packed with local produce. Take it all in on a funicular ride up to Cerro Alegre and Concepción.

You can explore more of the region on one of our optional Pre-Programs.

Preparing for adventure

Over the next two days at sea, you’ll learn more about the wonders we’ll encounter on our trip.

Expedition Team members are experts in everything from oceanography and geology to ornithology and history. Drop in on their fascinating lectures and hands-on presentations in the Science Center.

Grab a pair of binoculars and look for rare wandering albatrosses and petrels. Make the most of the onboard facilities and spoil yourself with a spa treatment in the wellness area. You can also enjoy the infinity pool, hot tubs, running track, sauna, and gym.

Castro's Chilotan charm

See stilt houses and historic churches and s et among the lush vegetation of Chiloé Island, Castro is Chile’s third-oldest city. It’s home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, those being the Iglesia San Francisco and Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Gracia de Nercón.

From various vantage points, enjoy great views of the city’s colorful ‘palafitos,’ which are stilt houses situated along the waterfront. For a bit of culture, head to the Regional Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

Bring your binoculars, as Chiloé is an important habitat for bird species such as green-backed fire crowns and Chilean flamingos, along with penguins, black-necked swans, ringed kingfishers, and silvery grebes.

Sailing south

We continue our adventure by setting course for Puerto Edén. As we pass quietly through the beautiful islands of Aysén, you can enjoy a rare opportunity to reconnect with nature. Enjoy the fresh sea air as we glide past untouched isles and green mountains, looking out for rare wildlife.

Take it all in from the deck, the outdoor hot tub, or the panoramic Explorer Lounge & Bar. Your Expedition Team will continue its lecture program in the Science Center, offering fascinating insights into the places and animals you’ll see on your journey.

Remote Puerto Edén

Set at the end of a deep fjord, our next stop is the enchanting village of Puerto Edén, set in Bernardo O’Higgins National Park.

The tiny settlement is only accessible by sea, and the ferry that connects it to the mainland only visits once a month. There are no roads here – just wooden boardwalks connecting houses and shops. Its 250 inhabitants include some of the last remaining members of the Indigenous Kawésqar people. You will have the chance to talk to them and gain insight into their unique culture.

Bohemian Puerto Natales

Our expedition cruise continues to Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. You can choose to see this beautiful national park on either a bus or hiking tour – both experiences are worth doing.

The rugged landscape features steppe, forest, and desert, punctuated by glaciers and lakes. Guanacos and rheas roam freely. Look out for Chilean flamingos and you may even spot the mighty Andean condor.

Puerto Natales is a popular hub for hikers and travelers, with many eateries, bars, and outdoor shops. Set out on your own to visit the artisan village at Etherh Aike, enjoy a gin tour at the Last Hope Distillery, or stroll along the photogenic waterfront.

Exploring Chile’s fjords

Your journey south along the Chilean coast takes you through the ruggedly beautiful island chains that make up the fjords of Magallanes Province. Isolated islands and hidden bays create a rich haven for wildlife.

Whether cruising aboard our small boats (RIBs) or on deck, look out for colonies of Magellanic penguins, elephant seals, and various whale species. You may also see majestic waterfalls along this dramatic and beautiful section of coastline.

Rounding Cape Horn

After sailing through the Beagle Channel, we’ll pass the southernmost tip of South America, Cape Horn. This formidable icon often presents challenging conditions, but weather permitting, we’ll attempt to land there.

From here, we’ll navigate the legendary Drake Passage toward Antarctica. En route, we will prepare you for what lies ahead and show you how to make your visit as safe and sustainable as possible.

In the Science Center, the Expedition Team will give lectures about Antarctica’s fauna, history, and geology, as well as the impact of climate change and plastic pollution. You can also get involved in our Citizen Science projects.

Antarctica: another world

Nothing prepares you for your first sight of Antarctica’s immense, frozen beauty. Icebergs, sculpted by nature, float in the straits. Gentoo and chinstrap penguins court while Adélie penguins nest. Countless seabirds wheel overhead. Nature is in charge.

During the next four days, you’ll be busy exploring several landing sites. There are more than 20 possible sites on and around the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we do, every day will be thrilling and unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

We might sail into a flooded volcanic caldera or land in icy bays where remnants of whaling paraphernalia lie abandoned. You may also have the chance to kayak among icebergs and seals or snowshoe to a thrilling viewpoint.

Bird enthusiasts should look skyward for Antarctic seabirds such as skuas, petrels, and terns. Through onboard lectures and onshore talks, you’ll learn more about this precious habitat and how we can all protect it for the future.

patagonia and antarctica tours

Sailing toward Ushuaia

After four incredible days in Antarctica, we sail back across the Drake Passage toward warmer weather in Argentina, giving you two days to enjoy life on board. There are plenty of things to do.

During your last few days at sea, you can take part in art workshops or enjoy a treatment in the spa. Get moving at the gym or admire views from the panoramic sauna. Relax in the outdoor pool or soak in the on-deck hot tubs.

Visit the Science Center and find out more about the things you’ve seen, or use the time to sort through your photos and get editing tips from our onboard photographer.

Ushuaia and Buenos Aires

Your expedition cruise ends in Ushuaia, the main city in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina’s southernmost province. From here, you’ll take a flight back to Buenos Aires, but it doesn’t have to be the end of your adventure.

We recommend signing up for one of our optional Post-Programs before heading home.

Itinerary at a Glance

In the Chilean Patagonia, one of the southernmost regions of the world, sail between massive blue-hued glaciers and the sharp peaks of the Andes mountains. This untamed terrain is home to fjords, channels, and islets with beaches teeming with marine wildlife, birds, and stunning natural landscapes best accessed by ship or Zodiac.

On this wilderness expedition, visit Puerto Cisnes, the San Rafael Bay and Glacier, the Gulf of Penas, the isolated village of Puerto Eden, the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego, and the Beagle Channel.

  • Day 1: Ushuaia, Embarkation Your journey begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, with boarding between 3 and 4 PM (15:00 – 16:00 hr.) We will make a brief technical stop in Port Williams to comply with Chilean customs and immigration requirements before proceeding along the Beagle Channel.
  • Day 2: Beagle Channel Today we sail along the Beagle Channel, a striking narrow passage in the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, a region named after the fires that burned in local native settlements when the first European explorers arrived. It partly belongs to Chile and partly to Argentina. We will sail along Glacier Alley, home to a family of five glaciers: the Holanda, Italia, Francia, Alemania, and Romanche glaciers. We hope to explore the Garibaldi Fjord where we will be surrounded by hanging and tidewater glaciers; nearby waterfalls are so close they can almost be touched. Spectacular ice formations are sprawled along the sea, forming part of the Southern Patagonian Ice field and the snow-dusted Darwin Range. It is a perfect time to enjoy the graceful view and, if possible, get a glimpse of sea lions and steamer ducks. The Beagle Channel, with the Strait of Magellan to the north and the Drake Passage to the south, is one of the three navigable passages in South America connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
  • Days 3: Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego While cruising along the Strait of Magellan, we explore the waters of the fiords that branch out from Tierra del Fuego. We follow the remote coast around the Francisco Coloane Marine Park, a protected area in the southern hemisphere where whales feed. If you are lucky, you may be able to witness Humpback or Sei whales breaching in the distance. You may also see dolphins, sea lions, seals, penguins, albatrosses, and petrels.
  • Day 4: Madre de Dios Island We continue sailing north towards Madre de Dios Island, part of an uninhabited archipelago west of the Trinidad Channel and Concepción Channel. The island is composed partly of limestone, with several natural caves that create a unique landscape evocatively named Marble Glaciers. In one of those caves, skeletons of whales 2600 to 3500 years old have been discovered. Many caves near the coast were used in the past as burial sites by the Kawéskar people. The whole region is an ideal place for exploration.
  • Day 5: Puerto Eden On our way north, we call at the famous fishing village of Puerto Eden, one of Chile's most isolated settlements. The village sits on the eastern side of Wellington Island and is only accessible by sea. Puerto Eden has no roads. Instead, a network of wooden boardwalks connects the houses and establishments. Rich evergreens cover the landscape steeped in indigenous traditions and culture, being home to the Kawéskar people. Shortly after leaving Puerto Eden, we sail through the dramatic, 18 mt-wide English Narrows.
  • Day 6: Gulf of Penas We cross the Gulf of Penas, enjoying beautiful views of the surrounding mountain ranges. As we continue to sail northward, the expedition team tells you about the indigenous inhabitants of these southern lands, the early Spanish colonizers, and famous explorers such as Charles Darwin, Fitz Roy, and Alberto de Agostini. You also learn about the region's biodiversity with presentations on the local marine life and flora.
  • Day 7: San Rafael The expedition continues with a full day of activities planned at San Rafael Bay. Declared a Biosphere Reserve, the park is the main entry point to Chile's Northern Icefields. San Rafael Glacier is the main attraction, but we will also enjoy exploring the surrounding fjords, channels, islands, and coves.
  • Day 8: Puerto Cisnes We continue to head north to the village of Puerto Cisnes, in the remote region of Aysén, for an afternoon visit. We visit the seaport and explore the area, with its many fjords, islands, and channels. We hope to visit Magdalena Island, where we have a good chance of seeing penguins, cormorants, sea lions, and river otters.
  • Day 9: Puerto Montt, Disembarkation Morning arrival in Puerto Montt and disembarkation.
  • Note: the itinerary presented above is for reference. As for any expedition cruise, our route will be subject to weather conditions and the requirements of the Chilean authorities.

Cruise Overview

Explore the frozen continent of Antarctica, Patagonia’s amazing national parks and the stunning Chilean fjords on an unforgettable expedition cruise.

Explore the frozen continent of Antarctica, Patagonia’s amazing national parks and the stunning Chilean fjords on an unforgettable expedition cruise.

The frozen continent

Start in the romance-infused city of Buenos Aires before heading to Ushuaia to board your hybrid-powered expedition ship. We sail the Drake Passage to the white wilderness of Antarctica where you’ll spend five beautiful days.

Visiting Antarctica in March is an excellent opportunity to see wildlife. Penguin chicks are fledging, and the nutrient-rich waters attract whales. Our Expedition Team will also give fascinating lectures and lead the way in landings and ice cruises. Exactly where we go and when is down to the sea ice and weather conditions on the day, but we’ll always bring you to the best spots available at the time.

South America adventure

We’ll go straight back into adventure mode and attempt a landing at Cape Horn. Waves from the Pacific and Atlantic converge here, creating challenging conditions. This fact makes it all the more exciting if we do succeed. You’ll then continue to the small town of Puerto Williams, and we’ll try cruising into Garibaldi Fjord, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to a glacier of the same name.

Patagonia’s National Parks

Arriving in Puerto Natales, you might join an optional excursion to the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park. Next is Pio XI, the longest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica. The isolated but inviting communities of Puerto Edén and Caleta Tortel follow. Castro is a charming rustic city with access to Chiloé National Park, while Niebla and its old Spanish fortress is your last stop before the vibrant hilltop city of Valparaíso.

Tango is only the beginning

Welcome to Buenos Aires, the ‘Paris of South America’

Kickstart your adventure with an overnight stay in Buenos Aires, famously called the ‘Paris of South America’. A sensuous fusion of faded European splendor and Latin American panache, Buenos Aires is home to numerous fine and modern art museums, landscaped parks and one of the world’s greatest opera houses.

Spend the evening at your leisure, sampling an authentic steak dinner at one of the city’s many parrillas or sightseeing some of the city’s best-known landmarks at Plaza de Mayo. You’ll also want to join the locals in an informal tango lesson, or at the very least, watch a dance show.

Pre-Program

Fancy getting even more out of your adventure? If that’s the case then why not extend your stay with an optional Pre-Program that explores wild Patagonia.

Start at the ‘End of the World’

Launch your expedition in Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city

We fly first thing in the morning to Ushuaia, a place nicknamed the ‘End of the World’. It’s here in the self-proclaimed southernmost city in the world where your expedition truly begins. Your basecamp at sea is the world’s first hybrid-powered expedition ship, MS Roald Amundsen. Once on board, you’ll meet the Expedition Team and attend a mandatory safety meeting.

After a welcome dinner, you can familiarize yourself with our state-of-the-art vessel, specially designed for sustainable voyages in polar waters. On our way through the scenic Beagle Channel, you can watch out for the rare endemic Peale’s dolphin and other wildlife as we set sail.

Crossing to another continent

Enjoy two relaxing days at sea crossing the Drake Passage

Over the next two days, you’ll cross the fabled Drake Passage, gateway to the Antarctic. Prepare yourself for what lies ahead through lectures from our Expedition Team in the dedicated Science Center. You’ll learn about Antarctica’s explorer history, wildlife, and how you can get involved in Citizen Science programs.

Sea days are also an opportunity to unwind. Whether you’re soaking in a hot tub, the infinity pool or relaxing in the spectacular panoramic sauna, you won’t miss out on any of the breathtaking views around you. When you’re hungry, you can sate your appetite in one of our three stylish restaurants.

Where nature reigns supreme

Witness nature’s unbridled power and the marvelous wildlife of the frozen continent

Welcome to Antarctica, an endless wilderness of ice, icebergs, and glaciers. It’s a place where nature is king and the rest of us, mere observers. Over the next five days, you’ll go on walks ashore, cruising by icebergs and glaciers, and spotting seabirds, seals, whales and penguin colonies.

Sticking to the motto ‘take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints,’ our Expedition Team will help you adhere closely to strict safety and sustainability procedures. Exactly where we go and when is down to conditions on the day, but we’ll always bring you to the best spots available at the time.

A return to open waters

Prepare for the next chapter of your adventure with two absorbing days at sea

After five days capturing as much of Antarctica as you can on your camera, you will need some time to reflect on this life-affirming experience. The two days back across the Drake Passage will certainly give you that—and a whole lot more. If you want, you can get more involved with the Citizen Science program and analyze samples at the microscopic level.

You can also attend more environmentally-themed lectures on topics such as the changing climate or oceanic plastic pollution, and we will reflect on our experiences in the frozen continent. When you’re ready to kick back and relax, you can do that too.

Explore Ushuaia

Stunning views and beautiful nature await at the ‘End of the World’

Today you’ll spend the day exploring Ushuaia. Head to the Galería Temática—Historia Fueguina if you want to learn more about the city’s fascinating history. Filled with photos and exhibits on Ushuaia’s first settlers, its discovery by Europeans and Charles Darwin’s later visit, it’s a definite must-visit.

You can get your passport stamped at the Tourist Information Center, marking your visit to the world’s southernmost city. Sample some of the delicious local cuisine, or spend the day hiking one of the many trails found just outside the city. With spectacular mountain views and tranquil lakes, you won’t be disappointed you made the effort.

Where two oceans collide

Be one of the few to reach the fabled Cape Horn

Once we exit the scenic Beagle Channel, we journey to the legendary Cape Horn. The area around the island is where the open waters of the Atlantic and Pacific collide, creating powerful waves that are made even stronger by swirling westerly winds.

Rounding Cape Horn is a feat not many people have experienced. Given the notoriety of these turbulent waters, we can’t guarantee a landing, but if fortune favors us with weather stable enough to set foot on the island and go up to the cape, you’ll be among a select few people in the world able to boast about it.!

Small town atmosphere in beautiful surroundings

Wild, remote and made for walking, Puerto Williams is a natural paradise

One of three contenders for the world’s southernmost city, Puerto Williams has a quiet atmosphere more akin to a small town. Visit the Martin Gusinde Anthropological museum for the history of the people and the city. You’ll see Yahgan artifacts, maps, photographs, and a traditional canoe.

You can also go for walks and immerse yourself in the gorgeous scenery, whether on your own or as part of a guided optional excursion. If the weather is nice, there might be also opportunities for kayaking. Have your binoculars at the ready to spot seabirds, including the mighty albatross.

patagonia and antarctica tours

The sights and sounds of a glacier

See one of the most impressive glaciers in Chile

The goal for the day is to go for a scenic cruise in Garibaldi Fjord in Alberto de Agostini National Park, all the way up to Garibaldi Glacier. This is a stunning region where the Andes tumble into the Pacific and great glaciers feed ice, and sometimes icebergs, into the beautiful Chilean fjords.

If weather and waters are kind, you’ll get to arrive at Garibaldi Glacier at the head of the fjord, one of the most impressive glaciers in all of Chile. The fjord is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to seals, sea lions and sea birds, including the Andean Condor.

patagonia and antarctica tours

Cruising through paradise

Islands, glaciers and steep mountains—drink in the views of the Chilean fjords

This wild and remote region was once the domain of canoe-faring indigenous people who lived, sailed and hunted here for centuries. Go out on deck and admire the serenity of this maze of waterways, surrounded by islands, glaciers and towering mountains while looking for wildlife such as elephant seals, dolphins and whales.

Not all the lectures from the Expedition Team will be indoors. If the ship attracts seabirds who come to fly alongside us, they might help you spot and identify them out on deck. An onboard photographer will also be available to help you with your expedition photography.

patagonia and antarctica tours

Torres del Paine National Park

Discover the charms of Puerto Natales, gateway to Torres del Paine National Park

Puerto Natales is the closest city to the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park.

Join our optional excursion to the park to discover a landscape of stunning variety, from vast open steppes to rugged mountain terrain topped by looming peaks that host a variety of wildlife. You’ll be watching for llamas, pumas and foxes, in addition to more than 100 species of birds, including the mighty Andean Condor.

Suppose you decide to spend time in Puerto Natales itself. In that case, the city has trendy eateries, Bohemian-type bars, a terrific gin distillery and an artisan village selling various crafts and gifts.

The giant that’s still growing

Pio XI’s staggering dimensions will astonish you

Growing as much as 150 ft a day, the sprawling Pio XI Glacier in Bernado O’Higgins National Park is the longest in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica. To reach it, we’ll sail east through the beautiful Eyre Fjord, which is lined by temperate forest. Dolphins are known to swim the waters here, accompanied by seabirds including terns.

If the weather and wave conditions are right, we’ll launch our expedition boats to explore the fjord and glacier, taking care not to get too close. Ice occasionally calves off the Pio XI’s wall into the waters below, creating a thrilling sight and sound to behold.

patagonia and antarctica tours

A tiny piece of paradise

Remote Puerto Edén, a beautiful village with a unique community

A paradise off the beaten path, Puerto Edén is only accessible by sea and is one of Chile’s hardest-to-reach inhabited places. There are no roads to, from or even within the village, just boardwalks and footpaths that connect the homes of its fewer-than 200 inhabitants.

The village is home to the last known community of Kawéskar people, designated a Living Human Treasure by UNESCO. You can meet freely and chat with the locals. You’ll admire their synergy with local plants and marine animals and no doubt respect their desire to protect their precious history and customs.

patagonia and antarctica tours

Aysén charm, Chilotan architecture

Explore Caleta Tortel, the timber town built on stilts

Thanks to the melting ice of the surrounding glaciers, the waters around Caleta Tortel are an eye-catching mixture of turquoise and milky-blue colors. If the weather cooperates, you’ll be able to get up close to the water on a kayaking excursion.

There are no streets within the village per se, but instead there’s a labyrinthine walkway system that you can wander around. Typical of Chilotan architecture, many of the houses are constructed on stilts. You’ll enjoy a signature warm welcome from the locals and maybe even a performance by folk dancers.  A village tour with a local guide is available as an optional extra.

patagonia and antarctica tours

The blue waters of Patagonia

Enjoy the blue waters of Patagonia as we travel in the wake of some famous explorers

Your expedition cruise continues north through the waters of Patagonia. When Magellan sailed here in 1520, he named the allegedly gigantic locals ‘Patagons’ after a related literary character in a Spanish novel. The name stuck. Fortunately, the only giants that inhabit Patagonia are the whales you’ll be scanning the seas for as we sail.

There will be more interesting lectures to attend, perhaps about seabirds, geography or indigenous culture.  Join an Art Workshop where you can paint something from your experiences so far, or dive into one of the Citizen Science projects in the Science Center.

Chilean charm

Colorful houses on stilts, craft markets and history—welcome to Castro

Set amidst windswept hills and lush green flora, Castro is the capital of Chiloé Island. Most visitors make a beeline for Gamboa wharf district to see the famous palafitos—brightly painted wooden houses built atop stilts along Fiordo de Castro. But this little city has so much more to offer.

Head to the main town square to visit the UNESCO-listed church, Iglesia San Francisco. The contemporary Museum of Modern Art of Chiloé is equally worth a visit. Hungry? Sample the local cuisine in one of the many great restaurants. An optional excursion to Chiloé National Park nearby is also available.

patagonia and antarctica tours

The fortress in the fog

Niebla, the small seaside town with a wonderfully preserved fort

Niebla, Spanish for ‘fog’, is set on a picturesque peninsula with views of Corral Bay on one side and the mouth of Valdivia River on the other. Take a stroll on the wide beach and, if the market Feria Costumbrista is open, you can sample traditional empanadas, antichuchos, churros and more.

You’ll likely spend most of your time here exploring the ruins of the old Spanish fort. Learn more about the region’s strategic history in the museum, walk around the lighthouse, pose next to the row of rusted canons, and take in the beautiful views across the river and bay.

Sailing north

More relaxing time at sea to indulge yourself aboard the ship

Make the most of your time on MS Roald Amundsen, whether you prefer scanning the seas for birds and marine life, sitting in a hot tub on deck, or enjoying your favorite drink in the Explorer Lounge & Bar. The Expedition Team will recap the highlights of your cruise and keep you engaged. Our onboard photographer may even present a slideshow of photos taken on your adventurous expedition cruise.

patagonia and antarctica tours

UNESCO’s ‘Jewel of the Pacific’

End your expedition cruise in Valparaíso, Chile’s cultural hub

Your 26-day expedition cruise ends when we reach the seaport of Valparaíso—a city built on steep hillsides overlooking the ocean. This UNESCO-listed city is a maze of monuments, churches, historical funicular lifts, cobblestone alleys, colorful houses and charming plazas.

As you bid farewell to MS Roald Amundsen, as well as the crew and the Expedition Team, we feel sure that you’ll be basking in the glow of experiencing some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. Perhaps you’ll already be planning your next trip … if so, we look forward to welcoming you on board again soon!

Post-Program

You’ll likely be fascinated by this colorful and unusual city, so why not arrange to stick around for an extra day or two and join an optional city tour followed by an overnight in Santiago de Chile. From here, you can also join a Post-Program to Easter Island, famous for its mysterious statues of giant heads.

Patagonia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 48-64°F in summer and 32-43°F in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 72°F, but it's a chilly 39°F at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

What to pack for Patagonia

Please check your Essential Trip Information for a complete list of packing suggestions for your itinerary.

Situated in the heart of the National Park, the Torres del Paine Mountains are one of the main attractions of the region and an icon of Chilean Patagonia. The immensity of the ice floes, the majesty of the mountains and the expanse of the lakes are a constant source of wonderment.

10-day Antarctic Peninsula Cruise

Spend your time exploring the magnificent Antarctic Peninsula on your choice of Jacada's selected luxury expedition cruises. Part of the continent of Antarctica, the Antarctic Peninsula consists of a 500 mile long mountain chain and numerous off-lying islands, offering the most dramatic scenery and the biggest variety of wildlife in Antarctica. Penguins, seals, whales and glittering icebergs inhabit these waters and on land, you'll get to explore one of the world’s most pristine natural environments. There's an abundance of exhilarating activities to enjoy during your cruise.

The Drake Passage

Your journey to the "White Continent" begins by crossing the famous Drake Passage, considered by many as a rite of passage on a voyage to Antarctica. Named after the celebrated explorer Sir Frances Drake who first sailed these waters in 1578, the Drake Passage extends between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands and takes about 2 days to cross in favorable conditions. You'll pass the Polar Front, a fascinating area of the sea where waters from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans meet. Keep your eyes open for seabirds and gulls such as albatrosses and petrels. It's near the South Shetland Islands that you'll spot your first icebergs.

Neko Bay

At the bottom of Andvord Bay, lies a little corner of paradise at the foot of a huge glacier. Neko Bay is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sites in the Antarctic Peninsula. Wildlife is also abundant here, with seabirds such as gulls, Cape petrels, cormorants, and marine mammals such as seals, orcas and whales. Your guides will take you aboard the Zodiacs to get closer to the icebergs or land nearby to the penguin colonies, to observe a sea leopard, lounging on the beach or watch swoop of the Antarctic terns.

Port Lockroy

On reaching the small island of Goudier, we will head for Port Lockroy which was discovered by the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot in 1903. Originally a base for whaling boats, Port Lockroy became a British base in 1944. Here you'll find a small museum detailing life on the base in the 1950s and research on Papua penguins. The port is the most visited place of the White Continent and is also the only port with a post office where you can send letters to loved ones. Close to Port Lockroy is Jougla Point where Gentoo penguins and Blue-eyed shags can be found and leopard seals, crabeater seals and whales inhabit the waters.

Deception Island

Nestled in the heart of the Shetland Islands, north of the Antarctic Peninsula, Deception Island is easily recognisable by its horseshoe shape. On the black volcanic sand beaches, the ruins of the abandoned cabins now give way to a rich wildlife. The largest colony of chinstrap penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula has taken up residence on these beaches. Trips aboard the Zodiacs allow you to land here to observe the 100,000 pairs of penguins, elephant seals and fur seals up close.

Accommodation in The Pampas

patagonia and antarctica tours

One of Argentina ’s best boutique Estancias for experience and elegance, you can’t really get more authentic, intimate and refined than La Bamba de Areco.

Positioned at the heart of the Pampas plains, 120 kilometres from Buenos Aires and but a few minutes drive from one of the oldest towns in Argentina, San Antonio de Areco, this estancia is not only perfectly placed but captures the rugged romance of the gaucho whilst still being impeccably stylish and well-run.

Avenues of plane trees lead you through the ranch’s lush parklands and paddocks to the typically 19th-century corralled casco (main house) painted in proud Vermillion red and white – permitting in parts a couple of vines to steal up its walls. This was once an important private home along the Camino Real (Royal Road).

Its eleven rooms are all done up in a smart, farmhouse style that is classically rural but with a contemporary lift. These open up onto the ranch’s shaded wraparound patios, perfect for relaxing, watching the ponies and where you can dine in summer. La Pulperia is the estancia’s own authentic gaucho inn converted to a separate lounge bar and boutique, and of course then there’s the array of different equestrian activities and excursions to choose from.

patagonia and antarctica tours

La Bandada is set in 200 acres of land and with just six rooms, a stay here is an intimate and authentic experience. The rooms are decorated in a very traditional style with 19th century antiques and period style linens and fittings.

Unlike many of the larger more touristy Estancias close to Buenos Aires, La Bandada has excellent personalised activities including: horse riding, taking part in the traditional gaucho lifestyle, wine tasting or simply relaxing by the pool. The food is excellent traditional fare with most ingredients grown and reared on the Estate.

Aurora Expeditions™

Patagonia & Antarctica Tour: Reasons To Combine The Two

Home > Blog > Antarctica > Patagonia & Antarctica Tour: Reasons To Combine The Two

Last updated on November 27 th , 2019

Always dreamed of visiting the final frontier of Antarctica , or exploring the heart of Patagonia in South America? Why not do both in one holiday, while saving money in the process? At Aurora Expeditions, we’re offering you the chance to combine these two incredible destinations on our Trek & Cruise packages in 2017/18.

Here are five reasons to start packing your bags today.

1. See two incredible destinations in one holiday

Patagonia and Antarctica are commonly recognised as being two of the world’s greatest wilderness frontiers. Whether you’re a fan of outdoor adventures, or you’ve been searching for something to break up the monotony of urban living, this is one opportunity that you won’t regret dropping everything for.

The contrasts on these two voyages are striking – you’ll go from cruising the ice strewn waters of the Antarctic, spotting penguins and camping out on the peninsula to walking in the shadow of the Andes, visiting local towns and encountering anything from llamas to glaciers.

Read more: 5 reasons why small cruise ships are best!

2. Save your money, double your adventure

When you book an Antarctica and Patagonia Trek & Cruise package in 2017/18, you can save up to 20% on the cost of your combined tours, including the price of all your transfers and connections. This means you get to see both of these two incredible regions for less, without compromising on the quality of the experience.

Read more: Top tips for staying healthy on an expedition cruise

3. You choose the structure of your ultimate journey

One of the best parts of our Trek & Cruise packages is that you have the freedom to choose how you want to structure your trip. Want to start with immersing yourself into the icy world of Antarctica before defrosting on a guided trek in heart of the Andean mountains? Can do.

Fancy pushing yourself on your trek first and then exploring the waters of Antarctica afterwards? Not a problem. You decide on the order of your trip, and we’ll sort out the details. Easy!

4. Smaller groups, bigger benefits

Both our Antarctic cruise and our Patagonia trek are specifically designed with small passenger numbers in mind, meaning you can look forward to a more personalised experience. In Antarctica, you’ll be travelling on the Polar Pioneer , our 54-passenger polar exploration vessel, where you can get to know your fellow passengers and expedition leaders throughout your voyage. Our smaller ship size also enables us to get closer to landing sites unaccessible by larger cruise ships, meaning you get even more opportunities to experience Antarctica up close.

In Patagonia, the small-group tour spirit is just as important – with fewer people, we can tailor the pace to suit the group so you can enjoy your surroundings every step of the way.

5. Make the most out of your leave

Getting away from our responsibilities for a holiday is never easy, but always worth it. If you’ve decided to make the most of your time off, there’s no better way than to combine two of our favourite destinations. Which other holiday gives you the chance to see the sun rise over the Torres del Paine the one day, and then bustling penguin rookeries the next?

To start planning your Patagonia and Antarctica adventure, get in touch with our team to make the most of this incredible deal!

I Went Skiing in Antarctica — and How You Can, Too

A skier’s journey to the end of the world for one of life’s best adventures.

Nicola McPherson

A visit to Antarctica signals the accomplishment of one of life’s most elusive goals: setting foot on every continent. But once I learned it was possible to ski there, visiting was not enough; skiing in Antarctica became my moonshot.

Even among seasoned skiers, few realize you can do it in Antarctica. And it’s not entirely endless frozen tundra; the numerous mountain ranges here give it an average elevation of 6,500 feet. It’s the coldest, windiest, and driest place on Earth.

Skiing in Antarctica can be difficult and expensive, but with the right preparation, you can do it. There are no ski resorts, chairlifts, or even primitive potties. It’s fraught with danger, including avalanches, crevasses, and unpredictable extreme weather. If things go awry, there’s no access to emergency services.

Ski touring, also known as backcountry skiing, is the only way to accomplish this. You attach climbing skins to the bottom of your skis and trudge uphill before transitioning your gear to downhill skiing mode. You'll also need the help of a professional mountaineering guide to navigate the aforementioned pitfalls and, of course, a way to reach the world’s southernmost landmass.

Melissa McGibbon

Ski season on the White Continent lasts from mid- to late October through the beginning of November, when enough snow remains on top of the ice sheets and the crevasse hazard on glaciers is lower.

When I discovered Aurora Expeditions offers 12- to 15-day expeditions to Antarctica with the option to go ski touring (packages start at $10,500), I decided I had to go.

Those who embark on such an adventure must be physically fit and have years of consistent experience skiing in bounds and out of bounds in backcountry terrain.

You don’t have to be an expert skier to do this, but you’ll enjoy it more if you’re confident in your abilities. Besides the determination you’ll need to realize this dream, your trip will require a dizzying amount of equipment, including ski crampons, ice axes, and avalanche transceivers — and you'll need to know how to use it all.

After booking the voyage, Aurora Expedition’s ski guide prepared us for what to expect. Tarn Pilkington, our IFMGA-certified (International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations) guide who has been skiing in Antarctica since the '90s, helped us plan what gear to bring and recommended we be ready to climb 3,000 feet for each day of touring.

My biggest fear was potentially squandering the opportunity of a lifetime by not being strong enough to enjoy the experience, so I committed to skiing every day I could before the trip. By early October, I had logged more than 80 ski days and 35 high-altitude hikes. I was nervous, but ready.

In late October, after several days of traveling, we boarded the Sylvia Earle in Ushuaia, Argentina, and sailed 625 miles across 30-foot swells in the Drake Passage until we reached the Antarctic Peninsula. By the time we reached the South Shetland Islands, we were more than 9,000 miles away from home.

On the first possible ski day, we got lucky and landed at Deception Island. Our group of eight made our way from the ship to shore in a zodiac where a single gentoo penguin greeted us. As the penguin rejoined its friends farther down the shore, we readied our gear. Clicking into my bindings, preparing to ski a volcano in Antarctica with an audience of curious penguins, felt otherworldly. The ascent was an easy 1,157 feet, granting us sweeping views of the island and Whalers Bay. Although no one comes to Antarctica for the quality of the snow, I was thankful for the surprisingly creamy turns.

The next day, high winds caused us abandon our plans to ski on Nansen Island, instead opting for Enterprise Island. Before we could reach our objective, though, we had to transition into downhill mode as the weather changed from partly cloudy to whiteout conditions in a matter of minutes. Still, it counted. We tried a second tour in Selvik Cove, but that, too, was a no-go. The opening in our schedule gave us time to observe a massive gentoo penguin colony on nearby Cuverville Island, which provided a magical experience of its own.

Our third day of skiing brought us to the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. The previous days of heavy snow and wind gave way to one brilliant day of powder and abundant sunshine on Hovgaard Island. Flanked by the Penola Strait and Southern Ocean, the island presents resplendent views from its snowy slopes. While skinning the 1,500 feet to the transition point at the top, we couldn’t help but stop to take photos and mentally catalog the grandeur. On one side, we watched icebergs large and small make their quiet journeys along the vast, open seas. On the other, we stared at the massive, icy black peaks that dominate the edge of the continent.

Skiing down brought me pure joy. I reflected on how rare this perspective was. The only way to see this particular panorama is by hiking or ski touring. In all of human existence, how many people could have possibly seen this view? How many have skied its lines? The day we had was a rare privilege, and we knew it. We decided to do a second lap to get as many turns as possible. My photos and videos don't do it justice, but at least reminded me it was real.

Day four of skiing brought us to the pyramidal peaks of Doumer Island, with a backdrop of the dark, dramatic Mount Luigi and the Seven Sisters peaks on Wiencke Island across the Gerlache Strait. We traversed seven miles, saw a hanging snow cornice the size of Chicago's Bean, and skied down to the luminous blue ice shelves that frame the island and plunge deep into the ocean’s abyss.

Even though our last ski day was thwarted due to wind and an incoming storm, I felt fortunate. Out of six potential days to ski in Antarctica, our plans were disrupted only twice. When you consider how much has to go right to make each day happen, we were downright lucky.

Aurora Expeditions is offering two voyages with ski touring options this fall. Antarctic Peninsula in Depth , departs from Ushuaia, Argentina, on Nov. 6, 2024, and Spirit of Antarctica departs Ushuaia, Argentina, on Oct. 27, 2024.

Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
