2024 houston open one and done picks, field, sleepers, 2024 houston open fantasy golf picks, rankings, wallace uses late birdie run to capture 1st pga tour title.
PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic (AP) Matt Wallace of England was hugging his caddie again Sunday, not to make good from an argument but to celebrate his first PGA Tour title at the Corales Punta Cana Championship.
Wallace ran off four straight birdies down the stretch on the Corales course at Punta Cana and closed with two solid pars for a 6-under 66.
He was on the putting green when Nicolai Hojgaard, the 22-year-old from Denmark playing on a sponsor exemption, had a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff. The putt just missed on the low side, giving the Dane a 68.
Wallace, already a four-time winner on the European tour, finished at 19-under 269 in winning in his 80th career start on the PGA Tour.
His iron play and putting was pivotal, such as the downhill 8-foot birdie putt breaking to the left on the 15th hole that gave him his first lead. Equally important was his attitude. Wallace can run on the hot side and often berates himself.
“Self-talk was very good today,” he said. “I realized at The Players Championship that out of the 145 shots I hit to miss the cut by one, two of those I spoke to myself nicely. That's not going to get the job done.”
He was coming off a tie for seventh last week at the Valspar Championship, memorable only for his play on the 18th off a cart path and then an animated argument with his caddie, Samuel Bernard of France, for asking if Wallace was sure about the shot.
That isn't unusual for Wallace, though it made for good television. They later were seen hugging it out. There was nothing but positive vibes, especially the birdie stretch that began at the 13th hole.
“It's cool. This is cool,” said Wallace as he started to get choked up.
The victory doesn't get the Englishman into the Masters because it was held opposite the WGC-Match Play in Texas. But he is set for the PGA Championship and the Sentry Tournament of Champions next year at Kapalua.
Hojgaard had a long two-putt birdie on the par-5 14th, and a clutch 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole to get within one and have a chance to catch Wallace. His putt narrowly missed, and he had to settle for being the runner-up.
Tyler Duncan (68) and PGA Tour rookie Sam Stevens (69) tied for third.

Payday at Puntacana
Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 Corales Puntacana Championship
Stacy Revere
The payday is modest when you compare it to the amounts on the line at the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship. But winning the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Championship on Sunday in the Dominican Republic comes with some handsome rewards— as Matt Wallace is about to learn .
The 32-year-old Englishman, No. 172 in the World Ranking entering the week, rallied on Sunday with a six-under 66 at Puntacana Resort & Club in the Dominican Republic to claim his first PGA Tour win in his 80th career start. A 19-under 269 total gave Wallace, playing his third full year on tour, a one-shot victory over Nicolai Hojgaard.
With the victory, Wallace, a four-time winner on the DP World Tour, locks up a PGA Tour card through the 2025 season. Additionally, he is now guaranteed a spot in the upcoming RBC Heritage and the Memorial, both designated events this season, and the PGA Championship at Oak Hill. It also ensures that he is in the field for the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the Players Championship in 2024, both designated events in the new PGA Tour system .
And there’s also the first-place prize money payout of $684,000 from an overall purse of $3.8 million. That’s no small thing considering Wallace’s biggest prior payday on the PGA Tour was the $575,000 he won for a third-place showing at the 2019 PGA Championship.

How much has Joel Dahmen won this year? 2024 earnings explored
J oel Dahmen is on the verge of what would be by far his best performance on the PGA Tour so far. Dahmen is vying for a top-10 finish at The Players Championship, and if achieved, it would mark his first since 2023.
The Players Championship is Dahmen's seventh event of 2024. In the previous six, he made three cuts, earning a total of $57,257.
Joel Dahmen opened the season at the Sony Open in Hawaii, where he finished T72 and earned $16,600. He then suffered back-to-back cuts at The American Express and the Farmer's Insurance Open. At the WM Phoenix Open, he finished T41, taking home a check for $30,404. He was cut again at the Cognizant Classic and finished T49 at the Puerto Rico Open, earning $10,253.33.
Joel Dahmen's fortunes appear to have taken a turn at The Players Championship , where he arrived as a member of the Top 125 in the 2023 FedEx Cup standings. At TPC Sawgrass, Dahmen played his first round with a score of 74 but rebounded and fired two consecutive 67s that catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard.
During the back nine of the fourth and decisive round, Joel Dahmen had three birdies and one bogey. Through the 11th, he has a score of 10 under and is outside the top 10 by just two strokes.
The Players Championship has paychecks ranging from $681,250 to $331,250 for players finishing between 10th and 20th place, where Joel Dahmen is currently ranked (amounts may vary depending on ties).
If Dahmen can bag this paycheck, it would be the highest for him in over a year. The last time Dahmen won more than $300,000 in a tournament was at the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship, where he finished T3.
Likewise, Dahmen hasn't won more than $400,000 in a tournament since the 2022 US Open , where he finished T10. He also hasn't received a paycheck of more than $500,000 since winning the 2021 Corales Punta Cana Resort & Club Championship.
Joel Dahmen's career earnings at a glance
Before the start of the 2024 season, Dahmen had played 13 years of professional golf. He has played on the PGA Tour , Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamerica so far.
His top earnings in professional golf have come on the PGA Tour, with $11.1 million, followed far behind by the Korn Ferry Tour, with $289,000. Between the PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamerica, he earned $8,658, to complete his career earnings at $11.5 million.
Dahmen has played 288 tournaments on the PGA Tour and its feeder circuits. His best results include three victories (one on the PGA Tour and two on the PGA Tour Canada) with 189 cuts passed and 38 Top 10s.
