The Best Atacama Desert Tours: 15 Stunning Adventures Await
15 brilliant Atacama Desert tours for unforgettable adventures. Explore Chile’s stunning destination.
Let me cut to the chase. Chile ’s Atacama Desert is incomparably beautiful.
Imagine walking along the tranquil salt lakes as the jagged landscape of purple-hued mountains creates an ethereal atmosphere. Add the 300 nights a year of perfect stargazing conditions and you’re in for a real treat.
How does wandering through the geothermal hot pockets at El Tatio’s Geysers sound? Or maybe a jaw-dropping sunset over Valle de la Luna ? Whatever the case, these Atacama tours will make your eclectic getaway a touch more memorable.
Ready or not, Atacama awaits!

Uyuni Salt Flats & San Pedro de Atacama 3-Day Tour
How does a Salar de Uyuni and the Atacama Desert tour all in one go sound? This is a 3-day tour that ticks all the boxes, from exploring Salar de Uyuni to the emerald green Laguna Verde .
The first half of the journey is a Bolivian whirlwind as you explore Colchani and Salar de Uyuni, ending off at Ajenchi Town. Soak up Bolivia’s industrial past at the Train Cemetery and admire a sunset producing a myriad of colours reflecting off the pure-white salt flats of Uyuni.
How about popping over to the flamingo-filled waters of Cañapa Laguna? Perhaps you want to see the unique tree-like rock formations in the Siloli Desert? Whatever the case, you’ll discover over 20 of Bolivia and the Atacama Desert’s top attractions in three days.
You should note that the tour excludes Isla Incahuasi and the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve entry fees.
Piedra Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons & Solar Full-Day Tour
This Atacama Desert day tour is brimming with flora, fauna, and picturesque lakes. Start your journey with a delectable breakfast as you overlook the sulphur-lined Miscanti lagoon. Volcanoes surround Laguna Miscanti y Miñiques, creating a colossal atmosphere.
Next up, the lake of Piedro Rojas Salars offers an unimaginable cacophony of colours due to the variety of minerals within the water. It can freeze over in winter, which makes a cool contrast.
Visit Piedro Rojas in winter, as the lake’s lower water levels make the colours even more vivid.
And if that’s not enough, you’ll also pop past Chile’s largest salt lake, Salar de Atacama. If flamingo spotting is on your bucket list, you can definitely tick it off here, as Laguna Chaxa is home to three unique species.
San Pedro de Atacama Etno-Astronomical Tour
No Atacama experience is complete without a night gazing into the starry sky above . So, get the most out of the Atacanemo sky on this astronomical tour .
Start off by getting a deeper scientific understanding of the universe. Get ready to understand the cosmos and how to differentiate a planet from a star. And don’t worry, you’re not just blindly looking up. There are telescopes to help guide you.
Visit between April and September for the best stargazing conditions.
Science isn’t the only perspective you’ll learn more about, and your tour guide will also explain the ancient inhabitants’ ways of seeing the stars.
Valle de la Luna Sunset Tour
There’s only one thing that beats seeing Valle de la Luna, and that’s seeing this magical landscape at sunset.
This Moon Valley tour allows you to explore a land where the wind carves the Martian-like landscape into ethereal formations.
Watch the Grand Dunes ripple in the wind and gaze at Las Tres Maria’s as the sun casts them in a golden glow. I’d usually recommend visiting Valle de la Luna at sunrise (to avoid the sunset crowds). But this is a private tour and your guide will take you to a secret spot that not many people know.
Atacama Desert Tour: 3-Day Special Activity Combo
Pack four of Atacama’s top tourist attractions into a 3-day experience like no other. Each tour departs from San Pedro de Atacama daily, so accommodation isn’t included, but transportation is.
From a geyser that erupts every six minutes to the biggest fumaroles in the Northern Geyser field, El Tatio is a bubbling world of sulphur awaiting discovery.
Then there’s the expansive fields of white salt flats in the High Altiplano. Some top ones you’ll visit include Salar de Pujsa, with its wildlife-filled wetland and the peaceful lakeside of Salar de Quisquiro.
And the opportunities don’t end there, as you’ll visit the salt mountain range of Vallecito and the hidden lagoons of Baltinache . What more could you ask for?
The Perfect Three-Day Atacama Itinerary
Hidden Lagoons of Baltinache Tour
You’ve probably seen those epic videos of someone walking into the turquoise waters of a small lagoon as the sky offers a tapestry of colour. Do you wonder where on earth you can find these picturesque lagoons?
Wander no more because this Baltinache tour will take you to seven remote lagoons every Instagram model tries to photograph. Although the tour excludes entry to the lagoons ($11.85 cash), it does include transportation and a guide who’ll make the experience truly unique.
Besides, who doesn’t want the chance to float in like a cork in a crystal-clear lagoon with white sand surrounding you?
Guided Buggy Tour Through the Atacama Desert
If you’re an adrenaline seeker looking to take on the Atacama’s rugged terrain, then this buggy tour is the one. Be it sand, mountains, or rivers. Nothing will stop your 4×4 vehicle in this seemingly never-ending landscape.
Want to pair a little adventure with some cultural significance? Your buggy tour will stop at two archaeological sites — you can try, but your GPS won’t find these hidden destinations.
All-in-all, you’ll traverse 31 miles of towering sand dunes, steep mountain roads (if you can call them roads), and trickling riverbeds.
San Pedro de Atacama Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride
Start your day early with unprecedented views of the Atacama Desert from above on this sunrise hot air balloon ride .
Watching the reddish glow of the sun begin to peak from behind the Licancabur Volcano is a sight few get to enjoy. And it’s a hundred times better when you’re 1,000 feet in the sky.
Your chariot of the sky (humour me) rises between the Andean Mountains and Domeyco Cordillera. As the sun kisses the ground below with rays of light, you’ll see it all, from Death Valley and Salt Mountain Range to the Atacama Lagoon and Moon Valley.
And just before you think the start of the day couldn’t get any better, it does. After landing, you’ll feast on a fresh medley of local cuisine. It’s sure to be the best breakfast you’ll have in Chile.
Geysers del Tatio Half-Day Tour From San Pedro de Atacama
Get ready to see the natural fireworks that Rodolfo poignantly calls the El Tatio Geysers at sunrise. This half-day tour offers you a short but sweet opportunity to admire the glistening minerals in the bubbling and steaming waters of El Tatio’s fumaroles.
The tour starts with a sunrise hike around the northern geyser fields. The bouts of steam and twinkling minerals throughout the walk are sure to knock you out of your early-morning drowsiness. After a generous breakfast, the second hike of the day takes you to the traditional village of Machuca.
This old Andean village still builds its homes (of which there are only 20) using traditional techniques. In other words, you’ll also learn about the communities that still live within this harsh landscape of El Tatio.
Chile’s Atacama Desert Tour With Canyoning & Trekking
Are you looking to build up a sweat and test your limits? Then, one of the best Atacama tours for you has to be this canyoning experience .
Get ready to descend a towering cliff face with a raging waterfall alongside you. I know it sounds pretty dangerous, but trust me, it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping. You’ll get to do four rappels throughout the day. And don’t worry. A qualified guide will help you every step of the way.
You’ll take turns climbing up to the top of the canyon and rappelling back down. So, in your off time, you can rest on the sandy banks or dip in the refreshing — albeit cold — river.
Atacama Red Rocks & Altiplano Lagoons Day Trip
Book this Altiplano day trip to visit the Tropic of Capricorn and venture into the red-laden landscape of the Aguas Calientes Salt Flat. You’ll enjoy an hour-and-a-half walk past the iconic Piedras Roja.
During the trip, you might spot the rainbow of colourful minerals cascading down Volcano Capur. But a guarantee is a visit to the most iconic lakes in the area, including Chaxa, Miscanti, and Miñiques.
On the way back from the Piedra Rojas, you’ll stop by Socaire village. Here, you can snap some photos of the 700-year-old and the sun setting over the Incan terrace fields of the village.
Atacama Desert Astrophotography Tour
Atacama Desert stargazing is always on the agenda, especially when you consider it’s a region at the forefront of astronomical research. With locations like ALMA and Paranal, taking an Atacama Desert observatory tour only makes sense.
This astrophotography tour is relatively new on the block, but it’s the perfect way to admire the night sky and snap some memorabilia simultaneously. From visiting the ACT Observatory to sipping refreshing aperitivo, it’s a memory that will last a lifetime.
And you’ll take two professional photos home. Could you ask for much more?
Atacama Fat Biking Tour
While everyone is heading to the usual tourist attractions, how about a guided bike ride through the Atacaman landscape? You won’t see the bubbling geysers at El Tatio or the calming lakes of the higher Atacama Basin, but at least you’ll be able to experience the land at your own speed.
The tour departs by car from Iquique in the afternoon and arrives in the middle of the desert just before sunset. This provides the perfect weather for the meandering journey through the region’s dunes.
The tour doesn’t include food, which isn’t ideal, but as far as ways to explore the Atacama go, it’s one of the best.
Multi-Day Tour in San Pedro de Atacama
If you want to enjoy all the best things in the Atacama Desert without a worry in the world, then this multi-day tour is for you. The adventure spreads across four days for your convenience.
You can entice your inner explorer with guided tours to Valle de la Luna, Rainbow Valley, Atacama Salt Flat, Piedras Rojas, the Altiplanic lagoons, and El Tatio Geysers. And to put the cherry on top, you’ll also embark on an astronomic tour at Ayllu de Cucuter.
You’ll also enjoy all your meals from the tour agency, including all the park entrance fees.
Salar de Uyuni & Altiplano Cordillera Traveller Tour
If you cross the border to Bolivia and want a truly exceptional experience, I highly recommend booking this Cordillera Traveller tour . My first day on the tour was a bit of a mix-up, as the booking office made a mistake, but my guide, Walter, was excellent.
The tour focuses on the Altiplano region, which happens to be the widest point of the Andean Mountains. One of the highlights of the tour has to be the visits to the pre-Columbian cities like Chirp.
These cities encapsulate just how powerful and significant the Incan Empire was. There are even Incan ruins at Licancabur Volcano, which you might visit if you choose it as a part of your tour package.
Practical Tips for Exploring the Atacama Desert Tours
- Valle de la Luna gets extremely busy. If you’re looking for a free-to-enter, quieter destination, consider Ckamur Valley.
- If you want an all-inclusive resort that includes tours of the Atacama Desert, consider booking a stay at Nayara Alto Atacama .
- Not all the tours depart from San Pedro de Atacama or include hotel pick-up. Make sure you read the tour description fully before booking.

Lima to Buenos Aires: Deserts & Dancing
A really good mix of hiking, culture, and exploration. I really enjoyed this tour, as it covers so many places that aren't otherwise accessible on your own. Arguable, Inca Trail was the highlight, but there was so much more. Ballesta Islands, Lake Titicaca, the Yungas Road in Bolivia, steak in Salta, etc etc. I enjoyed Bolivia much more than I expected (the museums in Potosi were world class). You have free time to explore the big cities such as La Paz on your own if you choose. Only downside were some inflexibility in restaurant choice. Overall a good trip I'll remember for a long time.

Enrique was highly knowledgeable and professional, yet also demonstrated a fun loving nature and great affinity for the area and people alike. The drivers were professional and I loved the concept of enjoying breakfast or sun downers or lunch during excursions. The choice of food was excellent. For a solo traveler, I couldn't have asked for a better trip!

San Pedro De Atacama Wonders (4Days/3Nights)
This is the second time booking through Tour Radar where an agent took a series of day trips to "create" a multi-day tour. Luckily all tours were through Turis Tours as they were great and the Turis staff was very helpful even beyond the tours booked (including weather threatening cancellations of tours). The guide was great but the archaeological tour was not good - one of the 2 sites we visited was closed so we climbed a nearby mountain to "look out" on the ruins. The geysers and the lagoons were awesome!

The Great South American Journey: Quito to Rio Adventure
This is the best G adventures tour I have done in terms of itinerary and people I was traveling with. I had a fantastic time with a great group of people. The only feedback I will give G is I feel the CEO guides are pressured to get 9s or 10s in their reviews and hence transmit that to us which made me not leave a review on the G website as I felt I could not be completely honest without harming the tour guides' rating. This culture should change if you want constructive feedback. I loved all 4 of my CEOs on my tour but 2 of them were outstanding (10/10s) and I felt as a result of above, I could not give them the credit they were due without causing harm to the other 2 who were also good but more 7/10s.

I booked the 4 Day Atacama tour. Marilda answered all my questions before the trip within minutes and was prompt in addressing all my additional requests. Unfortunately, due to altitude sickness I was unable to do the tour, but Marilda and the local tour company in San Pedro de Atacama kept checking on me and tried to facilitate last minute changes. I HIGHLY recommend this tour operator.

Luxury Travel to the Atacama Desert
The Atacama Desert ranks among the driest regions on earth, fifty times more arid than California’s Death Valley, with some regions having never had any recorded rainfall.
Located in the far north of Chile , it is a place of truly other-worldly landscape of towering volcanoes, flamingo frequented lagoons, salt-flats, geysers and shifting sand dunes. Indeed, the Atacama has been used to test Mars-bound NASA rovers and, thanks to its utter lack of weather, high altitude and low-to-zero light pollution, it is a stargazing haven home to the world’s most advanced observatories.
What’s more, despite its remote location and arid climate, the Atacama is home to a handful of luxury hotels. Based around the remote oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama, you can venture out and explore this incredible wilderness on foot, 4WD vehicle, horseback or mountain bike. The borders of both Bolivia and Argentina are relatively close by too, making it a great stop while exploring the great Salar de Uyuni and Argentina’s northwestern provinces of Jujuy and Salta .
October to December or March to May are great times to visit as you can enjoy the region in its more relaxed, tranquil and remote period. Due to potential heavy rains in February, we generally recommend not to visit the Atacama then.
- Visit the Tatio geysers
- Take a tour of the Moon and Death valley
- Explore the salt lakes in the region
- Star gazing
- Walk around the sleepy desert town of San Pedro de Atacama

What cultural experiences can I expect during the explorations?
The Andean culture is rooted deeply in the Atacama Desert. The local residents value their connection to the Earth. With Explora, you can immerse yourself in the nature of the Atacama Desert. These experiences can give you greater insight into the organic beauty of the territory and perhaps a better understanding of the people who live in this remote part of the world.
What languages are spoken by the guides and locals in the area?
The most commonly spoken language in the region is Spanish, and our guides speak both Spanish and English.
What safety measures are in place for visitor well-being in the desert?
We have established safety measures in place to protect our visitors from unstable weather conditions during our Atacama Desert excursions. Depending on the conditions, some explorations may be subject to changes or even cancelled. This is most common during the period between mid-December and the beginning of March due to the rain and snow experienced in the higher areas. This is known as the Altiplano Winter.
What unique geographic features can be found in Atacama, and how does it feel to explore them?
There are numerous interesting geographic features in the area, including active geysers, salt flats, multi-colored lagoons, thermal baths, dunes, and even volcanoes. Many visitors say the experience is like visiting an alien planet, giving you a one-of-a-kind adventure that takes you off the beaten path. These are just a few of the many reasons to discover the wonders of Atacama .

This National Park is well known in the world for its incredible columns of steam and water of 7 and 8 meters high and the temperature can reach about 86 degrees Celsius in which visitors will have the best option for photos in the Andean sunrise, this geyser field is the third in size on the planet.
In the afternoon we will go to the Thermal Pool located inside the park, where you can enjoy an entertaining bath with water from the same geysers and which are at a temperature of approximately 30°C. On the way back we pass through Machuca a small town decorated with adobe houses where we can enjoy the local cuisine, such as a rich anticucho of llama meat and / or goat cheese empanadas with pisco sour. Duration: 7.30 hours.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Chile's Atacama Desert
It's like nowhere else on the planet.
Best Things to Do
Where to stay, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.
Tatsiana Volskaya/Getty Images
Traveling to the Atacama Desert feels like stepping onto a different planet. There’s a reason for that — the soil here is similar to that on Mars. It’s the driest desert in the world and almost always voted as one of the best places in the world to go stargazing . If you want to experience breathtaking nature, this is the place for you. The town of San Pedro de Atacama sits at almost 8,000 feet above sea level, which is partially why it’s so dry. Other visitable parts of the desert go up to 17,000 feet — the same altitude as the Mount Everest base camp.
This area of Chile is significant for several reasons. It’s millions of years old and has ruins from around 10,000 years ago. Since there’s no light pollution, it’s one of the best places in the world to see the night sky. The most powerful telescope on Earth operates here and is crucial to research. Visitors to the desert have unparalleled access to the stars and planets of our solar system. From the local culture and Incan history to the salt flats and volcanoes, there’s no shortage of opportunities to engage with nature.
We spoke with Alain Maury, an astronomer at San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations (SPACE); Jéssica Senna, B2B manager at Pukarumi Travel Agency; and Jonathan Rojas, marketing manager at Nayara Resorts to compile a complete guide to visiting the Atacama Desert.
Top 5 Can’t Miss
- You can tackle four separate hikes while visiting the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), which appears as if you’re actually walking on the moon.
- El Tatio is the third largest geyser field in the world, with more than 80 geysers and 100-plus fumaroles (spaces where volcanic gas is emitted).
- The ALMA telescope is the largest and most powerful in the world and beyond — even more than the Hubble Space Telescope.
- Pukará de Quitor is an archaeological site north of San Pedro de Atacama with incredible views and one of the most popular attractions in the city.
- Cerro Toco, a dormant volcano near San Pedro de Atacama, is accessible for beginner hikers.

Join an astronomical tour.
Astronomical tours are one of the most popular things to do in the Atacama Desert. Although you can simply look up and see the sky at any given moment, it’s best to learn more from an astronomer or tour guide.
Explore Piedras Rojas and Altiplanic Lagoons.
This full-day tour picks you up from your hotel at 6:30 a.m. and has you home by 5 p.m. “You'll visit Piedras Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons, and Laguna Chaxa,” says Senna. “There's a flamingo reserve in the heart of the Salar de Atacama. This is a classic and must-[do] tour because you visit many special places.”
Explore the salt flats.
You can take a tour of “three salt flats (Ruta de los Salares) and a caldera where volcanoes exploded millions of years ago,” says Senna. The salt flats in this region are like nowhere else on Earth .
Visit the seven hidden lagoons of Baltinache.
These lagoons contain so much salt that it makes floating easy. This tour brings visitors to seven different lagoons, but for conservation reasons, you can only swim in the first and last ones. However, the half-day tour has fantastic reviews.
Go sandboarding in the Death Valley.
For adventure lovers, sandboarding is a great option. Companies like Sandboard San Pedro de Atacama arrange group tours and can accommodate a variety of skill levels.
Courtesy of Tierra Atacama Hotel
The Atacama Desert is more than 40,000 square miles, so travelers have plenty of options when it comes to accommodations. “There are about 400 places, from camping [sites] to Airbnbs to high-end hotels,” says Maury.
Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa
Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa , the first solar-powered property in South America, has a spa, dining area, and curated excursions. It's also one of the most popular resorts in the desert, due to its elevated atmosphere and ease of visiting the region.
Explora Atacama
This hotel is one of the best in the world for stargazing as it has its own private observatory for guests. Explora Atacama is an all-inclusive adventure hotel, which means all your food and excursions are included in the nightly rate.
Awasi Atacama
Awasi is home to 12 private suites inspired by pre-Inca ruins, with thatched roofs and private solariums. Guests also have a personal guide to help them explore the wonders of the Atacama Desert.
Milodge Elqui Domos
If you’re looking for a unique experience, Elqui Domos has seven geodesic domes with retractable ceilings to see the sky from your bed. It’s in the Elqui Valley, which is located on the southern end of the desert and an important area for producing carmenère and syrah wines.
Our Habitas Atacama
This boutique property houses 51 rooms plus a pool, a wellness area, and a communal gathering space. It has six pillars — art and culture, wellness, adventure, learning, food and beverage, and music — and daily programming is centered around these, in addition to the activities you can discover in the desert.
The best time to visit the Atacama Desert is September through December as there are fewer tourists, warmer temperatures, and plenty of stargazing opportunities. “[It's] a year-round destination,” says Rojas. “During winter, you have clearer skies; during summer, more flora and fauna and much more colorful sunsets.”
“Remember, when it comes to deserts, the thermal range is quite large,” says Senna. “In the summer period, which runs from September to March, it's quite hot during the day — 86 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit — and 50 degrees at night. In winter, from April to August, the temperatures are lower, varying between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 32 or 23 degrees at night.”
Watch out for the rainy season in January, February, and March. “When it rains in San Pedro de Atacama, all the parks close,” says Senna.
“January [and] February, which is the austral summer, is also known as altiplanic winter and may be cloudier than the rest of the year,” notes Maury. If the primary reason you’re visiting is stargazing, you’ll be disappointed to see nothing but clouds on your visit.

It’s surprisingly simple to reach the Atacama Desert. Most people choose to fly into Santiago, the capital of Chile. You can fly from New York (JFK) to Santiago (SCL) nonstop in under 11 hours on LATAM. Then, take a roughly two-hour flight from Santiago to Calama (CJC). It’s about an hour and 15 minutes by car from the airport to San Pedro de Atacama. You can take a bus, taxi, or arrange a pickup with your hotel. Renting a car and road tripping from Calama is also an option. Senna recommends Transvip for arranging an airport transfer. San Pedro de Atacama is on the border of Chile and Bolivia, which makes it easy to drive from the desert to Bolivia’s salt flats , the largest in the world.
There are three main options for getting around the Atacama Desert, each with pros and cons. You can rent a car, take a taxi, or go on an organized tour. “There is no public transport in San Pedro de Atacama and no service or app like Uber,” says Senna. “Getting around the city is done on foot or by bicycle.”
The airport in Calama has Avis, Rent a Car, and Europcar, to name a few. This option is helpful if you want to see multiple parts of the desert. However, as Maury explains, “Many touristic places, controlled by the local communities, tend to only admit people coming with a tour agency.” Senna adds, “Take into account that some roads are very bad, and it's common to see broken-down cars where there's no signal, so the recommendation is not to go by car on your own to the hidden lagoons of Baltinache and El Tatio.”
If you rent a car, you need to be sure it has good tires and can go off-road. With a regular city car, you must stay on the paved roads, making it difficult to visit many of the most popular places. Senna adds that even if you rent a car, you should hire a tour guide so they can give you all the information about the desert. After all, you'll want to learn about your surroundings.
“There are taxis, but there is no organized system for them,” says Senna. “So, if you want a taxi, you should get the phone numbers of local drivers.” Then, when you need to go somewhere, you can message the driver to pick you up. This is common in other parts of South America — I did the same thing when I went to San Carlos de Bariloche in Patagonia.
Organized Tours
The most common option is booking an organized tour where the company arranges your transportation. This area has several operators like Pukarumi Travel Agency . You can book tours through your hotel or separately via the agency. Not only is it easier to do this, but you get to learn all about the sites you’re visiting rather than researching them on your own.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
