Thank you deeply for an amazing 3 Day Dingle Tour with Peter this week! He is incredibly knowledgeable, fun, and attentive to my 17 year old son, the other 2 people on the tour, and myself. I highly recommend the tour and him, especially. Your country and people are amazing in every way! With gratitude, Thira *the tour was pricey, yet worth it. It would have been fantastic to have the meals, all of the extra entrance fees, etc, and that final night of accommodation. I did feel a bit awkward thinking it was a group tour and when it was just the four of us felt like I should give Peter a bigger tip. He definitely deserved 20% but I cannot afford that so I gave him all the cash I had which was 50 and that was a lot for me. Thanks much again!

What people love about 3 day ireland tours.

I had a blast on this tour! It had a sweet mix of Irish towns, culture, and some seriously breathtaking nature. Stephanie, our guide, was awesome - she had all the inside knowledge at every spot, making the trip super fun. This was my first time on a tour like this, but I'm definitely down for more in different places!
We really enjoyed our tour. Our tour guide, Marty, was terrific! He shared the history of each area we visited, the meaning of Irish words, fantastic pub/restaurant and museum recommendations and even had alternate plans for us when the Jameson Whiskey tour was canceled because of record rainfall and flooding (we got a refund too!). Our accommodations were always close to City Centre, clean, comfortable and had a delicious breakfast. It was a great experience!

3 Days In Ireland: 56 Different Itineraries To Choose From

Yes, we have  56  different 3-day Ireland itinerary guides for you to choose from…

Why 56 you ask?!

The reason for this is that we’ve covered  every  (we hope…) possible want or need you could have.

Each of our 3-day guides:

  • Has been meticulously planned
  • Follows logical routes we’re confident you’ll love
  • Has a detailed hour-by-hour itinerary
  • Makes planning a trip to Ireland easy

In the guide below, you can pick a 3-day Ireland itinerary based on:

3 days in Ireland itinerary

Please take 15 seconds to read the graphic above as it’ll help you pick the most suitable Ireland itinerary down below!

As you can see, we have 3 days Ireland itinerary guides that cover every angle we could think of.

All you need to do to find your perfect itinerary is read the section below  carefully .

How to browse our Ireland in 3 days itineraries

The handiest way to browse our itineraries is to select, from the list below, where you’re starting your road trip from/near.

We’ve used the main entry points to Ireland for those of you flying in or arriving by ferry.

Simply click one of the start points below and you’ll be taken to 3 days in Ireland itineraries that start at that location:

3 days in Ireland from Dublin

map holder image

If you’re looking to explore Ireland in 3 days and you’re starting from County Dublin, this section is for you.

There are two sections below, split depending on how you plan on getting around Ireland .

As we explained in this graphic , ‘Fast Trips’ are for those of you looking to see/do as much as possible and who don’t  mind moving hotel regularly and ‘Slow Trips’ are ones where you’ll move accommodation as little as possible.

For those of you with a car

  • A 3-day slow trip for those with good fitness
  • A 3-day slow trip for those with low fitness
  • A 3-day fast trip for those with good fitness
  • A 3-day fast trip for those with low fitness

For those of you using public transport

If you’re starting your 3-day Ireland itinerary in Dublin, the route above is hard to beat.

Although it varies slightly depending on how you’re getting around Ireland, both the car rental and the public transport itineraries take in many of Ireland’s top sights.

Over the course of your 3 days in Ireland you’ll:

  • Explore the many things to do in Dublin
  • Explore the Clare Coast, including Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher
  • Take a day trip to Wicklow, Meath and Louth
  • See Galway City, Connemara and Cong
  • Tackle the Ring of Kerry Drive , explore the Dingle Peninsula and see a chunk of West Cork

3 days in Ireland from Shannon

If you’re looking for a 3-day Ireland itinerary that kicks-off in Shannon, this section should tickle your fancy.

We’ve split up the different itineraries to ones for those of you using a car and ones for those of you that aren’t.

As we mentioned in this graphic , our fast 3 days in Ireland itineraries are for those of you looking to explore as much as possible and who don’t  mind moving about a lot.

Our slow itineraries are ones where you’ll move accommodation as little as is physically possible.

An overview of the route from Shannon

Limerick City walks

A lot of people start their 3-day Ireland itinerary from Shannon due to the convenience of flying into Shannon Airport.

One of the benefits of starting from here is that you’re kicking off your 3 days in Ireland a stone’s throw from some of the country’s most popular attractions.

If you follow our route from Shannon, you’ll:

  • Explore Connemara National Park
  • See the mighty Inis Mor Island
  • Visit Bunratty Castle before heading into the ancient Limerick City
  • See Killarney National Park and it’s many attractions
  • Visit Blarney Castle and tackle the many things to do in Cobh

Ireland itinerary 3 days from Belfast

Another great way to tackle Ireland in 3 days is to fly/get the ferry into Belfast and take it from there.

Belfast is a great starting point for a road trip as you can explore the Antrim Coast before continuing on to Derry and Donegal.

Like we explain in this graphic , we split up our itineraries below into two sections – 1 section is for those using a car and the other is for those that aren’t.

An overview of the route from Belfast

Dunluce Castle

This 3-day Ireland itinerary is one of my favourites in this guide as it takes in some of the most scenic parts of the country.

You’ll kick things off by spinning along the Antrim Coast, with a whole host of stops to choose from along the way.

If you follow our route from Belfast, you’ll:

  • Explore the Causeway Coastal Route
  • Tackle some of the best things to do in Belfast
  • See the best of the Boyne Valley
  • Spin around a good chunk of the Wild Atlantic Way

3 days in Ireland from Rosslare

If you’re spending 3 days in Ireland and you’re arriving into the ferry terminal at Rosslare, we’ve plenty of itineraries ready for you.

Now, as was the case with the ones above, we’ve split them into 2; 1 section is for those of you with a car and another for those of you using public transport.

If you’re wondering what ‘Fast Trips’ and ‘Slow Trips’ are, refer to this graphic at the top of the guide.

An overview of the route from Wexford

Charles Fort

Now, this 3-day Ireland itinerary varies a lot  depending on whether or not you’re getting around in a car.

The public transport around some of the more remote parts of Wexford, in particular, are what causes there to be such a contrast in the different itineraries.

If you follow our route from Wexford, you’ll:

  • See the glorious Hook Peninsula
  • Ramble around the town of Kinsale
  • Tackle some of the best things to do in Killarney
  • Explore the mighty Dingle Peninsula

3 days in Ireland from Cork

Our 3-day Ireland itinerary guides that kick off in Cork take in some of the best that Ireland has to offer.

You can choose (or opt out of) some magnificent walking trails, soak up spectacular scenery and step back in time at heritage sites.

These are some of our more popular 3 days in Ireland itineraries. As usual, we’ve split them up for those of you with a car and for those of you without one.

An overview of the route from Cork

Cork Gaol

Cork is a great starting point for a road trip. At the start of the trip, you can spend a bit of time in the city before moving into the wilds of West Cork.

Our itineraries from Cork then take you around the coast, into Kerry and up towards Limerick before heading to Dublin and back to Cork.

If you follow our route from Cork, you’ll see:

  • The beautiful Beara Peninsula
  • Wild West Cork
  • The Ring of Kerry
  • A chunk of Limerick, Tipperary and Clare

Ireland in 3 days from Knock

Although there likely won’t be a huge number of people looking for a 3-day Ireland itinerary that starts in Knock, we felt it important to include it as a start-point.

I can safely say that the public transport road trips from Knock were  very  tricky to research and map out. However, it was worth it.

Below, you can pick 3 days in Ireland itinerary kicking off in Mayo based on trip speed, your fitness and how you’ll get around (we explain how to browse the itineraries in this graphic ).

An overview of the route from Knock

Strandhill

If your 3-day Ireland itinerary kicks-off in Knock, you’re in luck – Mayo is home to an endless number of adventure opportunities.

Now, the public transport itineraries vs the car itineraries vary a fair bit due to the lack of buses and trains in places, but both versions pack a punch.

If you follow our route from Knock, you’ll:

  • Explore Achill Island
  • Tackle some of the best things to do in Galway
  • See some of the finest beaches in Ireland
  • Spend time in Sligo and plenty more

3 days in Ireland from Donegal

The last of our 3-day Ireland itinerary guides kicks off in Donegal.

This was by far the hardest one to map out for public transport and as a result the itineraries vary a lot.

As always, we’ve split the different itineraries up into sections for those of you with a car and for those without.

An overview of the route from Donegal

Horn Head

The route from Donegal for those of you driving is a peach. You’ll see parts of the county that rarely make it into tourist guidebooks and you’ll see many of Donegal’s historic sites.

You’ll then move into Sligo before heading to Mayo, Galway and beyond. For those of you using public transport, the route is  very  different due to Donegal’s poor public transport.

If you follow our route from Donegal, you’ll:

  • Explore some of the best things to do in Donegal
  • Soak up some of Sligo’s finest views
  • See the Connemara coast

FAQs about exploring Ireland in 3 days

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from ‘Is 3 days in Ireland enough?’ to ‘What route should I follow?’.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

Is 3 days in Ireland too long?

No. If anything, it’s no where near enough. Although Ireland is small in comparison to the likes of the US, there’s endless things to see and do scattered right the way across the island. 3 days will only scratch the surface.

What to do in Ireland for 3 days?

This will depend on whether you want a a busy or an easy 3 day Ireland itinerary. You could see a lot of Ireland in 3 days, but you’d be driving constantly. You’re best off following one of our itineraries in this guide.

Where to spend 3 days in Ireland?

Again, this depends on you and what you want to see and do. If you follow our route from Dublin, Belfast or Shannon in this guide, you won’t go wrong.

Day 1: Dublin - Transfer to Galway

The Doors of Dublin, Ireland

No trip to Ireland would be complete without visiting our capital city of Dublin – a city that combines centuries of fascinating history, a huge cast of influential and significant figures, and modern cafe culture, architecture, and fine dining options. Naturally, you’ll never find yourself short for a traditional bar to enjoy a Guinness or some fine Irish Whiskey either!

Your chauffeur will provide you with oral history and guide to as many of the famous sights of Dublin as you desire. We would recommend that you should visit:

O’Connell Street and the General Post Office (GPO)

Where the Proclamation was read on Easter Sunday 1916, for the very first time.

The oldest university in Ireland and where the hallowed ‘Book of Kells’ which dates back to 384AD is stored.

The Doors of Dublin

You’ll never see two identical doors as you wander through Dublin city, and their unique and colorful charm gives the city an unmistakable character.

The Guinness Storehouse

Pour your own pint of the black stuff in the Guinness Storehouse.

In the mid-afternoon and after a busy morning of touring Dublin’s delights, your driver-guide will take you across Ireland and to your accommodation in Galway City.

3 day tours in ireland

Day 2: Galway - Cliffs of Moher - Killarney

Cliffs-of-Moher-Ireland-1

In the morning your driver-guide will collect you from your accommodation and begin the journey westwards to perhaps the most iconic site in all of Ireland – the majestic Cliffs of Moher.

Our first stop along the way will see us visit the fishing village of Kinvara and visit the remains of Dunguire Castle.

Take a moment to enjoy the magnificent scenic setting on the coast of the Atlantic, climb the tower house, and depending on what time you arrive there is the option to attend a medieval-style banquet in the castle complete with traditional entertainment!

After our medieval experience, it’s time to get out into nature by making a stop in The Burren – A limestone wonderland formed millions of years ago and home to 75% of Ireland’s native flora. The Burren is also a site with great historical significance and your guide will deliver you to Poulnabrone, the famous large Irish celtic crosses in Kilfenora, and other structures and relics dating from the Mesolithic era right through the Iron Age.

Take a break and enjoy a spot of lunch in the picturesque coastal village of Doolin. Tradition is the name of the game here, so be advised that you will not find any chain restaurants or modern coffee shops in the tiny little village, but your guide will direct you to the best places to enjoy a traditional Irish meal.

Onto the main event of the day, the world-renowned Cliffs of Moher. Neither words nor pictures can fully capture the power and grace of the Cliffs.

Rising over 200 meters high and spanning 8 kilometers along the wild Atlantic coast, the Cliffs provide stunning views of the Aran Islands with the ocean crashing below. Your chauffeur will be able to inform you of all the folklore and myths that surround this incredible testament to the beauty of nature.

It is not just the setting of the cliffs of Moher that will blow you away, fans of wildlife and bird watching will want to spend hours here appreciating the Puffins, razorbills, Kittiwakes and occasional peregrine Falcons that call the area home.

After visiting these magnificent natural sights it is time to head to Killarney for and to your accommodation for the evening.

Day 3: Dingle Peninsula - Ring of Kerry

the-ring-of-kerry

Ireland’s most westerly point, the Dingle Peninsula offers rugged scenery and astonishing views. Dingle is a Gaeltacht region and the first language is Irish, so you may need your driver guide’s assistance if you want to buy a souvenir from any of the local stores!

We will take the steep climb of Conor Pass to bask in the magnificent peak views and take our time to luxuriate the glory of the Slea Head drive – recently voted one of the top 100 most beautiful places in the world.

The Ring of Kerry is a circular driving route renowned for the breathtaking scenery and landscapes to be found. Among the many stunning locations your driver will introduce you to, you will surely wish to take the mountain pass up through Molls Gap, where you will see the staggering views of Skellig Island – a key location for the recent Star Wars films.

Optional Transfer to Dublin or Shannon Airport

You may choose to include a transfer that evening or the following day.

cliffs of moher in ireland - bucket lists travel itinerary

3-Day Ireland Itinerary: Roundtrip from Dublin

When I first started planning my 3-day Ireland itinerary, I had two primary bucket list goals: see the Cliffs of Moher and visit the Guinness Factory. Now that I’ve completed my trip, I am confident that everything on my itinerary is worth its own bucket list checkbox! From exploring the historic streets of Dublin to winding through the picturesque landscapes of Cork to experiencing the majestic views of Killarney, this 3 day Ireland itinerary is the perfect introduction to an amazing country that deserves even more time to visit.

hannah staring out at fields in the countryside of ireland - bucket list travel

Are you planning a trip to Ireland? Here is my 3-day Ireland itinerary that I highly recommend as a guide to planning your trip, especially if it is your first time visiting!

3-Day Ireland Itinerary: FLIGHT

Since I booked a roundtrip direct flight from Boston to Dublin, it only makes sense that this 3-day Ireland itinerary starts in Dublin and ends in Dublin. I got really lucky with my flight and got a great deal by monitoring on Google Flights . Although I didn’t get an alert for this particular flight at the time I booked, I have since become a member of Going , which is another excellent way to get notified of time-sensitive flight deals from your preferred airport.

3-DAY IRELAND ITINERARY: CAR RENTAL IN DUBLIN

It might be possible to book a trip to Ireland and not rent a car, but it seems incredibly difficult. I initially tried to look up public transportation options given the Irish drive on the opposite side of the road from how we drive in the United States. I quickly learned, however, that with public transportation it is nearly impossible to get the timing right or make stops in all the recommended places. That said, I decided to rent a car.

car in traffic while on road in Ireland countryside. there is a cow walking alongside the road - bucket list travel

I had success booking an Avis car through Priceline (usually great deals!).

3-Day Ireland Itinerary: Day 1

For Day 1 of your 3-day Ireland itinerary, the first stop will depend on your flight arrival time. For me, I went straight to the Rock of Cashel (see below). If you arrive in Dublin very early, or the day before, consider starting your journey in the heart of Dublin. If you do land a day before, stay at The Merrion Hotel , an exceptional 5-star hotel that couldn’t be more perfectly located.

The Best Place to Stay in Dublin, Ireland: The Merrion Hotel As a Fora Travel Advisor , I can get you extra perks included with your hotel booking at no extra cost. Email me to book your stay.

EXPLORE DUBLIN

Take the morning to explore Dublin’s rich heritage. Visit the storied halls of Trinity College and marvel at the ancient Book of Kells, or take a peaceful stroll through the lush grounds of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. For a tour that combines multiple stops, consider this memorable experience.

Rock of Cashel

After a busy morning, it’s time to leave the city to begin your 3-day Ireland road trip. First, drive to the Rock of Cashel , a historic archaeological site.

rock of cashel in ireland - bucket list travel

Blarney Castle

From the Rock of Cashel, head to the famous Blarney Castle . Blarney Castle is a little over an hour from the Rock of Cashel. This will be the last long stretch of driving on Day 1.

Blarney Castle is famously known as the home of the Blarney Stone. Thousands of visitors travel to the medieval fortress to kiss the Blarney Stone. Supposedly, if you kiss the stone while upside down then you obtain the “gift of eloquence.” Even if you don’t want to kiss the stone, Blarney Castle is well worth the visit.

blarney castle in ireland - bucket list travel

After visiting Blarney Castle, drive a short 15 minutes to the city of Cork. Located in the southwest of Ireland, Cork is the country’s second-largest city behind Dublin. After checking into Hayfield Manor , an exquisite example of luxury nestled within a private, walled garden, spend the late afternoon and evening exploring Cork. If you are looking to grab a pint, check out The Oliver Plunkett .

The Best Place to Stay in Cork, Ireland: Hayfield Manor As a Fora Travel Advisor , I can get you extra perks included with your hotel booking at no extra cost. Email me to book your stay.

3-Day Ireland Itinerary: Day 2

Day two in this Ireland itinerary takes you to the famous town of Killarney. Before my trip, I was hesitant to put Killarney on my list of stops as I had heard it is extremely touristy and I was more interested in an authentic Irish experience. Nevertheless, I decided to check it out and can now verify that yes, Killarney is worth visiting!

After a morning walk touring Cork’s highlights, such as the English Market and Cork City Gaol, drive about 1.5 hours from Cork to the town of Killarney. Parking was not as bad as anticipated and there is street parking, which is super convenient. Spend time exploring the shops and cafés. There are also a lot of restaurants if you are interested in grabbing a more substantial bite to eat. While the town is certainly touristy, it was not overwhelming.

Killarney National Park

Located down the street from the town of Killarney is the gorgeous Killarney National Park. A few of the worthy sites include Ross Castle , Muckross House , and Torc Waterfall . Adjust your visit to Killarney National Park according to your interests and leftover time available after visiting the town of Killarney. If simply looking for a quick stop before driving to the next stop in the itinerary, Ross Castle is an easy destination. You are free to wander the grounds of the ancient tower fortress while admiring the beauty of the lake adjacent to the castle.

Check into the dromoland castle hotel

The next stop is a true highlight of this 3-day Ireland itinerary. Dromoland Castle , a 5-star hotel in Ireland, offers a luxurious retreat set against a historic backdrop dating back to the 5th century. This former ancestral home of Gaelic royalty is nestled amidst expansive lawns and overlooks a championship golf course, combining old-world elegance with modern comforts and exceptional service. Whether it’s fine dining, unwinding in the spa, or cozying up by the fire, guests are treated to an unparalleled experience of luxury and tranquility. Settle in for the evening at this destination hotel worthy of joining any bucket list.

The Best Place to Stay Between Killarney & Cliffs of Moher: Dromoland Castle As a Fora Travel Advisor , I can get you extra perks included with your hotel booking at no extra cost. Email me to book your stay.

3-Day Ireland Itinerary: Day 3

If following this itinerary exactly, getting an early start is key to a successful third day in Ireland. Today is the day to check off two of the more famous bucket list things to do in Ireland!

Cliffs of Moher

Drive to the Cliffs of Moher , a stunning array of sea cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. When I visited the Cliffs of Moher, there was a dense fog passing through. Some people might be disappointed if there is fog, but I can assure you that it was still just as spectacular of a viewing experience even with fog. I personally really enjoyed watching the wind carry the fog over the Cliffs. Spend some time walking along the cliffs and checking out the visitor’s center (where there is coffee!).

hannah standing with the cliffs of moher in the background as fog rolls in towards the atlantic ocean in ireland - bucket list travel

From the Cliffs of Moher, head eastbound towards Dublin. This drive is about 3 hours. After dropping the car off, take a taxi into the center of Dublin to check in at your hotel. As I noted previously, I highly recommend The Merrion Hotel . A couple of other stellar options include The Shelbourne, Autograph Collection (since I’m a partner of Marriott LUMINOUS, contact me to get all the perks!), and The W ilder (I can get you SO many perks here, too. Email me to book your stay at no extra cost compared to booking on your own!).

The Guinness Factory (Storehouse)

While I always referred to it as The Guinness Factory, the correct name is The Guinness Storehouse . Make sure to book your timed tickets in advance! If following this 3-Day Ireland Itinerary, I recommend booking a 16:00 time.

Exterior of the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Ireland with tourists walking along the sidewalk towards the entrance - bucket list travel

The Guinness Storehouse truly exceeded all my expectations. I have done many brewery tours in my travels, but I was so impressed that, even with my high expectations, the Guinness Storehouse lives up to all the hype. Be sure to check out the Gravity Bar to enjoy a pint along with breathtaking views of Dublin.

Explore Dublin

Once you have had your fill of Guinness, spend the rest of the evening walking around, checking out the restaurant and bar scene. Don’t forget to at least walk by the famous Temple Bar . Some bars play live music so be on the lookout for those!

After bar-hopping, settle in to get a good night’s sleep before departing from Dublin the next morning.

3-DAY IRELAND ITINERARY: FINAL THOUGHTS

I loved my trip to Ireland and wouldn’t change a thing about my itinerary – other than add more days and keep my trip going, of course! Ireland is one of those places I will absolutely be heading back to. It is so accessible from the eastern United States, plus there is quite a bit more I hope to explore. While Northern Ireland is technically not part of Ireland and is part of the United Kingdom, I look forward to making my way up there as well.

Have you been to Ireland? Any places I should make sure not to miss on my next trip across the pond? Comment below or send me a message – I would love to hear from you!

Your journey at a glance

Day 1: cong - connemara - galway.

Your expert guide and luxury vehicle will meet you at your preferred Dublin pickup point – it is the time to set off on your magical adventure of Southern Ireland. Your 2.5 hour drive towards the west coast will be broken by a refreshment stop in the heart of the Irish midlands. Your first stop on Ireland's west coast will be in the charming and traditional village of Cong. The village was made famous as the location of the Hollywood hit film 'The Quiet Man'. The charming Ashford castle and Cong Abbey are well worth a visit during your time here in Cong. Departing Cong, you'll set out for a stunning drive through the beautiful and barren landscapes of Connemara. Beautiful mountains, lakes and valleys are situated throughout Connemara – a region which retains a truly old fashioned Irish way of life. Indeed- you'll often be greeted by locals in the native Gaelic tongue – as Connemara is one of the very few regions to retain the language in daily life. Our drive takes us along Galway bay, where you'll enjoy captivating views out over the Atlantic Ocean, before arriving into the bohemian and historic city of Galway. Enjoy plenty of leisure time to enjoy the city's highlights, including the narrow streets filled with traditional Irish music 'buskers', the Spanish Arch and Eyre Square. Your overnight stay will be in this lively city – be sure to enjoy some of the city's famous seafood, a pint of the 'black stuff' and a good sing-a-long to Irish classics such as 'Galway Girl' and 'The Irish Rover'.

Accommodation Options

We can offer packages incuding 5 star hotel, 4 star hotel, 3 star hotel, castle or bed & breakfast accommodations. Please simply ask for pricing and details according to your style and budget preference.

Day 2: Burren - Cliffs of Moher - Kerry

Enjoy a traditional Irish breakfast in Galway before setting out on your second day of this fantastic tour. Cruising down the west coast – enjoy the views of lush Atlantic beaches – where visitors often spot dolphins and whales out beyond the surf. We'll make a stop at the unique geological 'Burren region' – a lunar landscape, which is millions of years old and home to flora of Mediterranean, Arctic and Alpine origins (the only such region in the world). This area plays a key role in the history of the Irish Potato Famine – listen in as your guide elaborates on this devastating period of Irish history – which sent millions of emigrants to North America and further afield. We make our next stop at Ireland's most fascinating natural attraction – the Cliffs of Moher. Often considered the most scenic cliffs on the continent – the Cliffs of Moher tower more than 700feet over the wild Atlantic Ocean and boast fantastic views of the Aran Islands and twelve pins mountain range. Enjoy an amble along the Cliff's edge, taking in the views. Pay a visit to the Cliffs of Moher visitor experience – which houses interesting exhibits, a gift outlet and a café. You'll depart the Cliffs of Moher, heading across the river Shannon towards Limerick city. Our final stop today is at the beautiful Adare Heritage Town – home to traditional thatched cottages and frequent winner of the title of ‘Ireland's tidiest town'. Your overnight stop is in Co Kerry – where you'll enjoy super traditional food, music and nightlife.

Day 3: Blarney Castle - Golden Vale - Rock of Cashel

Your third day of touring Ireland's beautiful south will begin by driving across the mountains of Cork and Kerry, en route to Ireland's most famous castle – Blarney! You'll have ample time to visit this historic castle and the extensive gardens which surround it. Be sure to allow time to kiss the Blarney Stone – which is rumoured to bestow upon you the 'gift of the gab' (that Irish characteristic of expressive speech and storytelling!). During your time in Blarney – there's a chance to visit the 'Blarney Woollen Mills' – an extensive, tax-free shopping haven, where you can stock up on traditional Irish knitware and unique gifts. A relaxing lunch stop can be enjoyed here in the area, before you continue on, enjoying a drive through the fabulous 'Golden Vale' area. The 'Golden Vale' is a rural, agricultural region, full of characteristic green fields and a lovely place for a relaxing and scenic drive. You'll make a short stop at the historic ‘Rock of Cashel Dunamese' – a site steeped in ancient Celtic history. Enjoy the opportunity to take some photos and stretch your legs here – this is the final stop of your journey and is followed by a luxury return drive to Dublin City.

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary: Dublin, Galway, and the Cliffs of Moher

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

I made a whirlwind of a trip to Ireland in the summer of 2018 when the World Cup was happening across Europe. My three days in Ireland itinerary ensured I could be back in London just in time for an England World Cup match!

During my three days in Ireland itinerary, I managed to visit Dublin, Galway, and the Cliffs of Moher . It’s entirely possible to see all three of these Ireland highlights in just a weekend! Whether you’re visiting Ireland for a long weekend or a short vacation, here’s your perfect three days in Ireland itinerary.

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

I booked a trip to Galway and the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin with GetYourGuide for €50 (check updated prices here ). This tour included the bus from Dublin to Galway, bus from Galway to the Cliffs of Moher, the bus from Cliffs of Moher back to Galway, and then Galway to Dublin. Lunch and snack stops were also included.

Although I normally don’t join tours, I found it was much cheaper (and quicker) to book through GetYourGuide than trying to book separate bus tickets and Cliffs of Moher entry tickets. With only three days in Ireland, I recommend traveling the hassle-free way.

The tour had an option to stay overnight in Galway instead of just round-tripping from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher in the same day. I chose this option so I could see one extra city during my three days in Ireland itinerary. You can pick this option too by emailing the tour provider after  booking your dates .

Prefer to DIY your Three Days in Ireland Itinerary?

City Link  has several busses running between cities and towns in Ireland, if you prefer to DIY the trip on public transport. Busses from Dublin to Galway cost  €13  each way.

After doing extensive research on how to get to both Galway and the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin via public transportation, I found for only a few euros extra, I would save a lot of time and hassle by just traveling with an  organized tour .

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary: Dublin - Day 1 (and 3)

Getting from dublin airport to dublin city center.

I flew from London Gatwick to Dublin Airport on a red-eye flight so I would have all day to explore Dublin after landing.

A few  airport busses  run from Dublin Airport to Dublin City Center for €6-€7. A local  Dublin Bus 41  will take you there too, a little slower for €3.30. Don’t forget to bring the exact fare because the buses don’t give you any change!

Things To Do In Dublin

Assuming you have 1-2 days in Dublin during your three days in Ireland itinerary these are some city highlights you shouldn’t miss:

  • Guinness Storehouse – visit the home of the Guinness Stout, the most popular attraction in Ireland. Get a free pint of Guinness too.
  • Dublin Castle – explore the beautiful grounds and gardens of this 12th century castle. An essential stop to learn about Irish history.
  • Jameson Distillery Tour – visit the home of Jameson Irish Whiskey and enjoy a flight of whiskeys to taste!
  • Go on a walking tour of Dublin to get your bearings and learn about the long history of Dublin and Ireland.
  • Temple Bar – grab a drink at this iconic Dublin pub (or any other Irish bar in Dublin. Needless to say the city has many. Join a  backpacker pub crawl  if you’re here for the booze!
  • Teeling Distillery Tour – Visit a lesser known whiskey distillery in Dublin making quite a name for themselves.

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary Day 2 - Off to Galway!

On Day 2 of my three days in Ireland itinerary , I was whisked from Dublin through the Irish countryside on a tour bus to Galway. The bus departed from Dublin early in the morning, around 7am.

Around lunchtime we arrived in Galway, where the wind and rain were relentless and no one wanted to get off of the bus. Galway was freezing, dark, and dreary, even in June, but everything I expected Ireland to be.

Tip : Bring lots of layers and rain gear during your three days in Ireland!

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

Included in the tour is a short guided walk around Galway and a little time to explore on your own. Our tour driver took us to the Spanish Arch next to the river, then down Quay Street which runs right through the heart of Galway.  The driver also pointed out a jewelry shop for Claddagh Celtic rings . He let us know that with our tour tickets, we could get a discount when purchasing this classic Celtic ring (not sure if this is offered as part of every tour).

We stopped next at St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church and the Lynch Memorial Window where we learned about a centuries-old hanging that took place. Afterwards we were allowed to wander Galway on our own to get a feel for this beautiful Irish town.

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

Exploring Galway, Ireland - Thing to do in Galway

  • Head to the park across from the Long Walk strip of colorful houses for a great view!
  • Stroll down the River Corrib and spot some locals fishing
  • Shop (or grab a pint) on Quay Street , the busiest section of Galway. Catch some street performers dancing and singing the traditional Irish way!
  • Visit  St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church  and the impressive  Galway Cathedral
  • Chill in Eyre Square , home to many street performers

Where To Eat in Galway :

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

Off to the Cliffs of Moher!

The next stop on my three days in Ireland itinerary was a destination I didn’t want to miss: The Cliffs of Moher . These dramatic sea cliffs are on the west coast of Ireland and are an impressive 14 kilometers long. The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most visited and well-known natural wonders.

On the tour, our driver played some traditional Irish tunes over the speakers, while the bus rumbled down narrow and windy Irish countryside roads.

The driver did a great job informing us about some of the famous landmarks that we were driving by. We also learned about the history and traditions of the area. We stopped once on the way to the Cliffs of Moher at this viewpoint overlooking a valley in the Ireland countryside.

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher Experience

A long, mostly-paved trail stretches along the Cliffs of Moher that visitors can follow for kilometers. Each section of the trail gives different views of the cliffs, with rolling green hills, and sometimes cows, on the opposite side of the cliff. A museum, Cliffs of Moher visitor’s center, and gift shop are also on site to learn more about the cliff, its geology, and how it’s formed a part of Ireland’s history.

When the tour bus stopped at the Cliffs of Moher, the bus driver made some politically incorrect jokes about how he doesn’t want any of us passengers to commit suicide here while doing a headcount. The Cliffs of Moher is an infamous suicide spot, and there are signs warning against jumping. We were given about two hours to explore the area.

Being in Ireland, I should have expected for it to be windy, raining and freezing at the Cliffs of Moher. They drop straight off into the ocean after all. Learn from my mistakes for your three days in Ireland: be prepared for the rain!

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

Although I was soaked to the bone, freezing cold, and muddy up to my thighs from wandering around the trails, I loved the Cliffs of Moher! The scenery was incredible and comparable in my opinion to the Grand Canyon in its epic display of land vs water . I can only imagine how incredible the Cliffs of Moher would be on sunny days.

After about two hours, we all boarded the bus again. On the way back to Galway we stopped at a small Irish pub/diner for a quick bite, before returning to Galway.

While most of the tour passengers stayed on the bus to head back to Dublin, I was glad to be one of the few that was dropped off in Galway. I had about 20 extra hours to spend exploring this lovely city.

Three Days in Ireland Itinerary. Things to do in Dublin, Galway, and tour to the Cliffs of Moher

Day 3 - Back to Dublin, to finish three days in Ireland!

My last day during my three-day Ireland itinerary was spent back in Dublin. From Galway, in the morning I went to the Galway coach station and was picked up by a departing tour bus from the same company.

I had one last day to spend in Dublin before my flight back to London, to complete my three-day Ireland itinerary!

Check out some of these free things to do in Dublin to round-out your itinerary.

  • Visit the Ha’Penny Bridge which connects both halves of Dublin. When it was first built in 1815, people were charged a ha’penny to cross it.

Day 1: Dublin – Connemara – Galway

We’ll depart Dublin this morning and make our way to the West of Ireland and beautiful Connemara. We’ll stop for refreshments in the midlands before arriving in the enchanting village of Cong. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara filmed the Quiet Man here and the village is also home to Ashford Castle, a stunning resort which is frequently host to celebrity weddings and royal families on vacation. We have time to visit Cong Abbey before continuing our journey through the wilderness of Connemara. We enjoy the unique landscape, beautiful lakes, valleys and mountain scenery. This area is Gaelic speaking and still maintains many of Ireland’s traditional ways, despite suffering massive depopulation during the Great Famine of 1845 – 1851. Arrive in Galway mid afternoon for time at leisure in this atmospheric city. We have time to explore the Spanish Arch and ramble down colourful Shop Street with its many street performers, seafood eateries and quaint Irish bars. Overnight in Galway.

Day 2: Galway – Cliffs of Moher – Dingle Peninsula

Today you will have the Atlantic Ocean by your side as we cruise down a portion of the Wild Atlantic Way. The coastal route is characterised by beautiful golden beaches and maybe even dolphins and whales breaching off the shore. Meanwhile, the limestone Burren region is a lunar landscape with unique features such as underground rivers and waterfalls dating back 300 million years. Today’s highlight is the Cliffs of Moher, the most popular natural tourist destination in Ireland and easily most spectacular cliffs in Europe. Rising over 700 ft in height, the ciffs mark the edge of Europe are home to some of nature’s most majestic birds including puffins, gannets and many more. We’ll cross the mighty River Shannon in County Limerick where Viking longboats once ruled the waves. Look forward to spending the night on the breathtaking Dingle Peninsula, in the heart of rural Ireland.

Day 3: Highlights of the Ring of Kerry – Killarney – Dublin

This morning we’ll take in some highlights of the Ring of Kerry (which typically include Moll’s Gap, Leprechaun Crossing, Killarney National Park, Lakes of Killarney, Torc Waterfall) before enjoying time at leisure in Killarney. Many guests enjoy an (optional) horse and carriage or horse ride. The journey back to Dublin takes us on a leisurely drive through the heritage town of Adare with its fabulous thatched cottages and the Golden Vale, Ireland’s finest agricultural land with its rolling fields and pastures. We return to Dublin by 19:00 approx.

Do's and Don'ts for Three Days in Ireland

Lucky you guide to a great, brief stay in ireland.

Do's and Don'ts for Three Days in Ireland

So, you have to cram Ireland into three days? Obviously, you won't be able to see it all. But with a little planning, you can have a well-rounded experience that introduces you to the country's modern urban life, renowned castles, ancient history, beautiful rural landscapes and breathtaking seaside. Not bad for a three-day adventure.

Tour with a twist (and a few pints!) on the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl

Start in Dublin . Tailor the day to your interests, but wrap things up with the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl. Even if your nose is never in a book, this tour is a fun way to explore the city's literary history and a few of its renowned bars – and to immerse yourself in the Irish joie de vivre bubbling over in the capital city.

  • Everything You Need to Know Before Your Dublin Trip

The tour lasts a little over two hours and requires walking about half a mile. It starts with a song at The Duke pub, a famous Dublin establishment founded in 1822. Then, off to Trinity College and other pubs while listening to the guide reciting lines from Wilde, Joyce, Yeats, Beckett and other legendary Irish writers. Each pub visit lasts about 20 minutes, so there's not much time to get sloshed. Just get some food in your belly before the tour kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Consider pre-tour dining at The Duke. At the other pubs, there's only a slight chance of grabbing a quick bite on the run.

The Dublin Literary Pub Crawl ends at David Byrne's, not far from the starting point. There's plenty of public transportation within a few blocks – including taxis, buses, a DART station and tram stops – ensuring little need for a designated driver.

This tour shows an authentic side of Dublin culture and nightlife. Try to avoid the often recommended Temple Bar section of the city. It's a tourist trap and not worth the limited time. Just about everything in the area is overpriced, and visiting involves dealing with throngs of drunken tourists.

See castles galore in County Cork

County Cork lies a scenic three-hour drive from Dublin. The city of Cork is well worth stopping in, but the countryside and villages throughout the area are covered in castles and castle ruins, mostly from the 15th through 17th centuries. Anyone should see these sites while touring Ireland to get a stronger sense of the country's character and history.

Blarney Castle is the most famous in the County. But, while the castle itself is a must-see, consider not bothering to kiss the Blarney Stone. It's on every tourist's to-do list, so the wait to get to the top of the castle for the big smooch can be quite long. You can lose lots of time for what many learn is an underwhelming payoff.

Barryscourt, Carrigadrohid, Desmond, Drishane, Kanturk and Tyntes Castles are some of the others you can see in County Cork. Go with comfortable, stable walking shoes to better navigate the terrain around the castles. Also, there's a decent chance the weather will be cold, windy and maybe rainy. Layers are key to staying warm – or maybe cooling off – while exploring the grounds. A raincoat and umbrella are also good to have.

The interiors of some castles and forts in the area aren't accessible to the public, and those that are usually allow only limited access. They all also have varying hours that may change seasonally, so check their schedules in advance.

Journey to the end of the world on Dingle Peninsula

On Ireland's southwest coast, about a two-hour drive from Cork, the Dingle Peninsula stretches 30 miles into the Atlantic. Its tip is the westernmost point in Europe, and prior to the 16th century, Europeans believed it to be the end of the world. Some still may. You might not want one as a tour guide.

Dingle Peninsula displays nearly 6,000 years of history through ancient abodes and religious sites, monuments, a 6th-century monastic settlement and other archaeological marvels. Guided tours are available, but it's fun to explore the peninsula on your own. This means about a 25-mile drive. If you're going it on your own, stop at visitor centers and museums to get the most out of the experience.

Don't miss visiting the town of Dingle to enjoy art galleries, seafood restaurants, boat tours, aquariums and seal sanctuaries. Offering a glimpse into today's small city living in Ireland, it contrasts with the ancient history, helping to create a well-rounded three-day visit.

Finally, remember, you're probably in for some cold, windy and possibly wet weather as you wander Dingle Peninsula. That brisk North Atlantic sea breeze – and Ireland's climate in general – can be a little unpleasant. So, don't leave the layers, raincoat and umbrella behind in County Cork; you may need them here, too.

Helpful Dublin, Ireland Travel Tips

Dublin, Ireland

The Best Time to Visit Dublin: The best time to visit Dublin is from late Spring to early Autumn when sunny days occur. The Dublin climate is mild, and you can expect rain at any time of the year. Pack an umbrella or a raincoat. In Autumn and Winter, the days are shorter and can be blustery and grey, although you’ll find great prices and much less crowds.

How to Get to Dublin: Getting to Dublin is a breeze with well-connected flight options from major international gateways in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. When you touch down at Dublin Airport, you can take a taxi or AirCoach bus to the city center.

How to Get Around Dublin: Navigating the city is relatively easy. Most of Dublin is walkable. However, you’ll also find the DublinBikes scheme, taxis, trams and buses. FreeNow is the local taxi app. Only licensed taxis are allowed to pick up passengers.

Where to Stay in Dublin: The River Liffey divides the city into two areas – the Northside and the Southside. The Northside has traditionally been considered less desirable, but it is a fascinating and authentic part of the city with some of the best bars and neighborhoods.

The Southside, on the other hand, is often seen as more affluent. As you explore Dublin, you’ll cross the Liffey and discover all this diverse city offers. Look out for postal codes that start with D1, D2, D4, D8 & D7 to be close to the city center.

Dublin has an array of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to boutique boltholes. If you can stay around the Dublin 2 area, you’ll be in the city’s center with plenty of sites.

The Southside has some of the most lavish hotels in Ireland , like The Shelbourne , The Merrion , and The Westbury Hotel .

If you’re on a tighter budget, opt for authentic neighborhoods like Smithfield or the Liberties, just a few minutes walk to the city’s center. You’ll find cool spots like The Hendrick or the Hyatt Centric The Liberties Dublin .

Day One in Dublin, Ireland: Discover the City

Take a bus tour.

Dublin, Ireland - Viking Splash Tour

Dublin is super compact, so you can pack a lot in one fun morning on your Dublin itinerary. While you can take conventional hop-on-hop-off buses , opt for the fun and frivolous Viking Splash tour instead. Put on Viking helmets and find yourself amid the boisterous revelry aboard a WWII amphibious DUKW. The adventure sets sail – quite literally – from the heart of Dublin’s St. Stephen’s Green Park. High above the bustling streets, perched in the lofty seats of this transformed vessel, the guides are a mix of entertainers and historians who will bring you on a unique trek across the city!

Have Lunch & Hit the Shops

Dublin Ireland - St. Stephens Green

In the afternoon, opt for a leisurely lunch and some retail therapy. If you’re lucky enough that the sun graces the sky, grab a sandwich from Green Bench Cafe and head for the serene surroundings of St. Stephen’s Green or the lesser-known haven, Iveagh Park.

While historic St. Stephen’s Green attracts a crowd of tourists, a hidden oasis awaits a couple of minutes just south of the square. Iveagh Gardens is a sanctuary tucked behind the National Concert Hall and one of the most peaceful corners of Dublin. Enjoy this Georgian park of rustic grottos, fountains, woodlands, and its pretty rosarium.

Let’s be honest, though – Dublin’s weather is unpredictable, and having an indoor backup on your Dublin itinerary is always good. Whether your vibe is an elegant afternoon tea at The Shelbourne hotel or a more down-to-earth experience, like delving into the local specialty, Coddle (originally a pauper’s food), at the Hairy Lemon, there are many places to explore.

Dublin Ireland - Grafton Street

Dublin’s city center is tiny, which is an excellent advantage for shopping. Whether you seek elite fashion labels like Chanel and Hermes or more unique treasures, Dublin has plenty of shops. Head straight for Kilkenny Design on Nassau Street or the Irish Design Shop on Drury Street, a haven for indigenous designers. Explore pottery at Arran Street East, fashion at Om Diva, literary delights from Gutter Bookshop and Book Upstairs, and Chupi’s jewelry in the elegant Powerscourt Shopping Centre. A print from Jam Art Factory is a great souvenir to bring home.

Traditional Irish Music

Dublin, Ireland - L. Mulligan Grocer

As the night falls, an evening of authentic traditional Irish music awaits. Stop for dinner at L Mulligan Grocers in the historic Stoneybatter neighborhood and then head around the corner to The Cobblestone.

In the heart of history, Smithfield, this iconic pub is an absolute addition to your Dublin itinerary. Step inside and discover Irish hospitality, live music with well-worn wooden floors and seats. Experience the sounds of Irish tunes, fiddles, and bodhráns. Locals and visitors gather for one of the best places in Dublin for a pint and to experience the heart of traditional Irish culture.

Day Two in Dublin, Ireland: Explore the Top Attractions

Guinness storehouse.

Dublin Ireland - Guinness Storehouse

Kickstart your morning with a visit to Ireland’s top attraction and usually the top of any Dublin itinerary, a visit to the Guinness Storehouse , home to Ireland’s famous export.

The Guinness brewery is woven into the fabric of the nation’s history, and the immersive exhibit will teach you all about Dublin and its famous drink.

The experience ends with a ‘pint of plain’ at the Gravity Bar, with panoramic windows and some of the best views of Dublin’s low-rise skyline.

Kilmainham Gaol

Dublin, Ireland - Kilmainham Gaol

Next stop, visit Kilmainham Gaol, a 20-minute walk away, and learn how this former prison played a pivotal role in Ireland’s struggle for freedom.

Built in 1796, Kilmainham Gaol witnessed a chronicle of events that shaped the nation’s destiny. Its cold corridors once confined political dissidents, rebels, and visionaries.

A guided tour will give you a fascinating insight into the 1916 Rising, an important period in Irish history. Step into the cells that once housed revolutionary figures and learn about an era marked by hardship, heroism, and the legacy of the fascinating figures who fought for a better future for Ireland—book tickets early, as Kilmainham Gaol tours sell out quickly.

The Phoenix Park

Travel Agent Approved: 3-Day Dublin, Ireland Itinerary

A further 20-minute walk away lies Phoenix Park, a verdant expanse that ranks among Europe’s largest urban parks.

Its roots trace back to 1662, and it’s home to Dublin Zoo, the home of the president, Áras an Uachtaráin, and the stately residence of the US ambassador.

Take a stroll or rent a bicycle and explore the park’s hidden gems. Near the park’s north end, Farmleigh House is an elegant Edwardian manor house built in the 18th century. Once the Guinness family residence, you can explore the picturesque gardens, clock tower, boathouse, and 78 acres home to donkeys, horses, and Kerry Black cows.

Not quite as far from the city center, the Victorian Walled Gardens is worth a stop for cake and tea in the Tea Rooms beckons. Watch for the graceful fallow deer that gracefully roam the park. In summer, Dubliners congregate around the Pope’s Cross and the Wellington monument.

Dublin, Ireland - Dublin Castle

In the likely event that inclement weather intervenes, stay around the city center instead. The Chester Beatty Library within Dublin Castle houses a trove of rare books, manuscripts, and relics and is the perfect place to while away an afternoon on your Dublin itinerary.

Or, opt for a guided tour at the Little Museum of Dublin and discover the city. The Little Museum is home to plenty of U2 memorabilia for fans of Dublin’s most famous band. The EPIC Irish Emigration Museum is another journey through Ireland’s history to learn about the colossal diaspora. EPIC is an immersive experience and a great addition to your Dublin itinerary if you have Irish ancestry.

Dublin, Ireland - Temple Bar

No Dublin itinerary is complete without time spent in the tourist hotspot, Temple Bar. While many come for the pubs and bars, you’ll also find music venues, independent shops, and plenty of dining spots between Westmoreland Street, Fishamble Street, the River Liffey, and Dame Street.

Explore murals of music icons like Sinead O’Connor and U2, the tiny Photo Museum Ireland, the Irish Film Institute, the Gutter bookshop, and a lovely food market on a Saturday.

Have a pint at The Temple Bar. It might be overpriced, but it’s worth stopping for one so you can say you’ve done it. Or, for something more sophisticated, try Vintage Cocktail Club. Book a table at a restaurant like FX Buckleys, Piglet Wine Bar, or Rosa Madre for dinner.

The atmosphere of Temple Bar is fun, but beware that it can be messy later into the night at weekends. Spending the night, or at least a few hours in Temple Bar, is a must on your Dublin itinerary.

Day Three in Dublin, Ireland: Live Like a Local

Visit the coast or mountains.

Going beyond Dublin’s city center is a must on your Dublin itinerary. The most challenging part is deciding which area to pick. There are three highlights to consider.

Hop on the DART train, a coastal passage along Dublin Bay, and choose whether to venture north or south.

Option #1: Killiney

Dublin, Ireland - Killiney

If the compass points you south, set your sights on Killiney, home to famous figures like Bono’s picturesque Killiney Hill and the charming village of Dalkey. While Ireland might be far from tropical paradises like Seychelles or Maldives , you can still bask in the Irish Sea’s embrace at the Vico Baths. Even in winter, if the sea is safe, you’ll find locals popping in year-round for a dip. Have a bite to eat in DeVille’s in Dalkey afterward.

  • From Dublin: Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough & Kilkenny Tour
  • From Dublin: Kilkenny and Wicklow Mountain Full-Day Tour

Option #2: Howth

Dublin, Ireland - Howth

For those leaning northward, the picturesque harbor village of Howth awaits. Embark on a hike across Howth Hill with sweeping views of Lambay Island and the Irish Sea.

Howth’s hidden treasures lie in its secluded beaches. While Burrow Beach attracts locals and visitors alike, the lesser-known Red Rock Beach remains a tranquil haven accessible via a narrow path along the Howth Cliff Walk. Whether for a serene hike or a refreshing dip, Howth is one of the best destinations to add to your Dublin itinerary.

The rewarding loop returns you to the harbor, where some of the world’s finest fish and chips await.  Meander along the waterfront and stop at Crabby Jo’s for lunch. The warm and cozy Mamo is a top neighborhood spot, too.

  • Howth Coastal Half-Day Bus Tour from Dublin with Live Guide
  • Dublin Panoramic E-Bike Tour with Howth Adventures

Option #3: Dublin Mountains

Dublin, Ireland - Wicklow - Ruins of Glendalough

A third option for Day 3 of your Dublin itinerary is to head to the Dublin Mountains and neighboring Co. Wicklow.

High atop Montpelier Hill, the Hellfire Club is an 18th-century ruin that is said to be haunted.  Constructed as a lavish hunting lodge for an affluent Irish peer, its reputation turned dark as it gained notoriety for hosting wild parties and occult rituals – whispers of devil worship added to the mystery. The Hellfire Club has the best view across Dublin.

Johnny Foxes, one of Dublin’s most legendary pubs, is just a 15-minute drive away.

Venture into the next county, Wicklow, known as the Garden of Ireland, for stunning scenery and beautiful hikes. Enchanting Glendalough should be at the top of your Dublin itinerary if you choose this option.

Glendalough means “Valley of Two Lakes,” which will hint at the picturesque landscape that awaits. A network of hiking trails weaves through the valley and surrounding woodlands and hills.

St. Kevin founded the Glendalough Monastic Site in the 6th century. The well-preserved ruins of churches, a round tower, and other structures offer glimpses into Ireland’s ancient past.

Nearby, ‘Fancy Mountain’ is one of the best hikes to add to your Dublin itinerary. It will take you past breathtaking Lough Tay, with views of Luggala. Luggala was owned by the Guinness Heiress and her son, Garech Browne. Luggala’s storied walls have embraced famous artists and musicians, nurturing the talents of household names and offering a haven for creativity.

Garech’s brother, Tara Browne, passed away in London in the 1960s, inspiring The Beatles’ iconic song “A Day in the Life.”

Have an Authentic Night in Dublin

Dublin, Ireland - J. Grogan

Venture back to the city center and end your 3-day Dublin itinerary with an authentic Dublin night with culinary delights and libations that will make you want to book a second trip.

While the tourist-laden pubs and restaurants in Temple Bar may be fun, dive deeper into the local scene.

Dublin may not traditionally have been known as a foodie hot spot , but the culinary scene is thriving. For contemporary Mexican food, try 777. For Chinese delights, Hang Dai, and for Indian fans, Pickle is a must. L’Gueleton serves up delectable French classics, and the covered outside area is perfect for people-watching.

If Michelin Guide-approved havens are more up your street, try to nab a table at Patrick Guilbauds, Chapter One, Bastible, or Uno Mas.

Have one more pint at the favorite haunts of Dubliners like Grogans, Mulligans of Poolbeg Street, O’Donoghues, Frank Ryans, and Walshes of Stoneybatter.

Want somewhere unique? The Hacienda in the north inner city is not open to anyone. You must ring the bell and hope you’ll be granted access by the carefully curating owner.

Maybe you’ve had enough Guinness? There are plenty of modern cocktail bars and speakeasy-inspired sanctuaries. Peruke & Periwig, Fidelity, The Blind Pig, The Big Romance, and Sitting Room Delahunt are worth adding to your list.

End your 3-day Dublin, Ireland itinerary on a high with an authentic night out.

However, we’re confident that this 3-day Dublin itinerary showcases the best the city offers. Enjoy your trip to the Emerald Isle!

Top 10 things to know before traveling to Ireland

3 day tours in ireland

From pub etiquette to catching public transport – here's what you need to know before you to Ireland © Atlantide Phototravel / Getty Images

A lifetime of living in Ireland has given me some insight into the vagaries of my home country, beginning with the number one rule: never assume anything. This is a country that delights in confounding even your most comfortable expectations about pretty much everything, from the weather to the quality of the wifi.

Here are 10 tips that I’m pretty comfortable giving anyone who plans a visit, whether for the first time or the fifth. I’ve got some practical tips around VAT refunds and the most efficient ways to get around, but then there’s a bunch of suggestions on how to crack the mightiest nut of all – the Irish themselves. Because be in no doubt, while Ireland has gorgeous landscapes, a rich history and the best pubs in the world, your visit will only be truly memorable if you get to know the people – friendly and welcoming but often contradictory and inscrutable.

1. Plan on at least seven days to start making sense of the country

Ireland is small, but there’s an awful lot to it. Luckily, distances in Ireland aren’t huge so you can get most anywhere in a few hours, but the list of where to go can get very long, very quickly.

It’ll take you a couple of days to even begin to make a dent in Dublin , but once you go beyond the capital you’ll need at least five days to make a lightening stop tour of the major highlights of the west: Galway and Connemara, Clare (where you’ll find the Cliffs of Moher and the most authentic traditional music in the country), Kerry (you’ll need a whole day just for the Ring of Kerry and another for the Dingle Peninsula ) and Cork , only it’s time to go home so you can only make enough time for Cork City .

Clearly the only solution is to plan for a month; at the end of it, you’ll be wanting to stay a year.

2. Keep it to casual wear

The Irish aren’t big on formal wear and only pull it out for very specific occasions (a wedding, a ball, the opening of a parliamentary session). Which means you can wear pretty much whatever you want: smart casual is the most you'll need for fancy dinners, the theatre or the concert hall.

Irish summers are warm but rarely hot, so you'll want something extra when the temperatures cool, especially in the evening. Ultimately the ever-changeable weather will determine your outfits, but a light waterproof jacket should never be beyond reach for the almost-inevitable rain. If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking – in cities or on hills – a good pair of walking shoes, preferably waterproof, will do the trick.

Add these top beaches around Ireland to your travel itinerary.

3. The land of a 100,000 welcomes

Céad míle fáilte – literally, 100,000 welcomes. The famous Irish greeting suggests a country that is big on displays of affection, but nothing could be further from the truth. A firm handshake – with eye contact – is the appropriate greeting when meeting men, women and older children for the first time. Once a friendship is made, then all bets are off and anything goes, from a hug and a kiss on the cheek (primarily amongst female friends) to an air nod and a casual "hey".

Younger Irish are less formal than their older counterparts, but even they generally eschew effusive greetings: more often than not, a quick handshake and a casual nod is the best way to say hello for the first time.

4. The Irish love to talk, until they don’t

The Irish are renowned for their chat, but with people they don’t know particularly well they generally like to keep it to topics that are light and not likely to embarrass. Despite their gregarious nature, the Irish tend to be reserved when it comes to life’s more serious issues and are very mistrustful of "oversharers".

The old adage that the Irish will talk about anything except sex, religion and politics is something of an over-simplification, but if you do find yourself steering into deeper waters around sensitive topics it’s always better to listen: locals aren’t shy about getting into heated discussion amongst themselves about all kinds of topics but take a dim view of outsiders who express (even legitimate) criticisms of Ireland or the Irish.

5. You’d better learn about the rounds system

It’s a firm rule of drinking with locals. If someone buys you a drink, you’re obliged to buy them one back – this is the bedrock of Irish pub culture. Nothing will hasten your fall from social grace here like the failure to uphold this pub law.

The time to repay the drink you’re drinking? It’s when the person you’re drinking with is just about to finish theirs. It doesn’t matter if you’re halfway through your own drink at that moment: you can’t let your drinking buddy sit in front of an empty glass. Your greatest challenge will probably be trying to keep up with your fellow drinkers, who may keep buying you drinks in every round even when you've still got a collection of unfinished pints in front of you and you're sliding face first down the bar.

6. The best way to visit cities is on foot or by public transport

Driving and parking in Irish cities is a nightmare. There’s no free parking anywhere; the unrelenting traffic will test even the most patient of drivers; and the one-way systems in major urban centres will confound you to the point of madness (although map apps are pretty good at pointing you in the right direction).

The good news is you don’t need a car to visit any Irish city. Dublin, the biggest by far, has a pretty decent system of public transport, but even then most of the major sights are within walking distance of each other. Same goes for Cork, Belfast, Limerick and Galway, which are more easily explored without a car.

Save this guide to the best road trips in Ireland.

7. The easiest way to explore Ireland is by car

If cities are best experienced without a car, the most effective way to explore the rest of the country is with one. The bus network, made up of a mix of public and private operators, is extensive and generally quite competitive, though journey times can be slow and lots of the points of interest outside towns are not served. The rail network is quicker but more limited, serving only some major towns and cities. Both buses and trains get busy during peak times; you'll need to book in advance to be guaranteed a seat.

Cars can be hired in every major town and city. The Irish drive on the left hand side; distances and speed limits in the Republic are measured in kilometres, but once you cross the invisible border into Northern Ireland everything switches to miles.

8. Ireland is good cycling country

Ireland's compact size and scenic landscapes make it a good cycling destination, albeit one you need to prepare for. The weather is unreliable, roads can be very narrow and Irish drivers tend to drive quickly, even on those narrow roads. A growing network of greenways, such as the 42km Great Western Greenway in County Mayo and the Royal Canal Greenway that runs through the midlands, are a great and hassle-free way to see the country from two wheels. A good tip for cyclists in the west is that the prevailing winds make it easier to cycle from south to north.

Buses will carry bikes, but only if there’s room. Intercity trains will also carry bikes, but you’ll need to book a space in advance as there’s limited capacity. Suburban rail services in Dublin won’t take bikes during rush hour (7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm). A number of Irish companies arrange cycle tours, including Go Visit Ireland  and Cycling Safaris .

A scene from the annual Christmas Day swim, with hundreds of swimmers turning up for a leap into the water at the Forty Foot this morning, in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.

9. Pick the right season to travel in Ireland

June to mid-September is high season: the weather is at its best and the most popular parts of the country – Dublin , Kerry and the southern and western coasts – are at their busiest. The downside is big crowds and the highest rates for accommodation and car hire.

Rates drop off from mid-September as the crowds start to thin, but most tourist spots are still open to take advantage of the last weeks of the season. Although weather can never be predicted with any degree of accuracy, the weather can be surprisingly lovely right up to mid-October.

Low season runs from November to the middle of March; Irish winter days are short, damp and cold, but the upside is fewer visitors and some terrific accommodation deals. A lot of the west coast goes into winter hibernation, though, with a lot of attractions and hotels closing down; if you’re planning to visit during this time you should check what’s open before you travel.

Ready to head to Ireland? These are the best times to visit.

10. Claim your VAT back if you’re visiting from outside the EU

Most goods come with value-added tax (VAT) of 23%, which non-EU residents can claim back as part of the Retail Export Scheme, so long as the purchase was made with a credit card. Visitors from the UK can also benefit from this, but not visitors from Northern Ireland.

Before making a purchase, check with the retailer that they operate the scheme. If they do, you will be issued an export voucher for the purchase, which you need to get certified by customs when you leave Ireland. The voucher is sent back to the retailer who then refunds you the VAT (minus any processing fee).

Rather than operate the scheme themselves, many retailers use VAT-refunding agencies, whereby you go through the same process of presenting the agency’s own certificate at customs. Some agencies, though, operate a scheme where you don’t pay any VAT upfront, but if you don’t file the paperwork correctly (either sending it back to the agency or presenting it to customs) your card will be charged later. Some goods such as books, children's clothing and educational items are excluded from VAT.

County Donegal & the Wild Atlantic Way 3 day tour

Belvedere House and Gardens

Whether you love history, literature, nature, or a good cosy pub, you’ll find something for you on this three-day tour from Dublin.

Tour Highlights

County Donegal - This part of Ireland will spellbind you with striking coastal views, rugged mountain tops, and rich Irish heritage.

Slieve League Cliffs - Gaze upon the second-highest sea cliffs in Ireland, three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher.

Leo’s Tavern - The home of music. Famous artists like Enya and Clannad have performed here.

Belvedere House and Gardens - This 18th-century hunting lodge boasts dramatic architecture and a Victorian walled garden.

Wild Atlantic Way - Get ready to be blown away by the wild beauty and unique experiences waiting for you on this epic coastal route.

Your journey

Don’t you want to be one of those people? The ones who have the best stories, the most amazing photos, the most incredible memories?

Recount the dramatic history of Ireland over a meal with friends. Incite envy when they find out you dined where Enya once sang. That you gazed upon the tumultuous waves of the North Atlantic Ocean crashing against some of the tallest sea cliffs in Europe. That you explored the largest Norman castle in Ireland.

After this tour, you’ll have all that and much more.

Tour Details

Students, seniors over 60, and children between 5 and 15 (unfortunately, we don't carry children under 5 years old)

  • Pack your waterproof clothing and walking shoes
  • This tour crosses the border, so you'll need euro and the British pound sterling
  • Attraction tickets may need to be purchased in advance. More information is provided in your booking confirmation e-mail
  • Transport in a 16 seat Mercedes mini-coach
  • Air conditioning as standard
  • The stories and services of an English-speaking driver-guide
  • Entry fees to visitor attractions
  • Tour accommodation
  • Step back in time in the largest Norman castle in Ireland, Trim Castle
  • Explore the island town of Enniskillen, full of charming streets and pubs

You depart Dublin and journey back in time to the 11th century to Ireland’s second Cistercian Abbey. Now in ruins, Bective Abbey is a maze of dead-end passageways and staircases that lead to nowhere. Let your imagination take you back to when this abbey was built and imagine what daily life might have been like.

Next, it’s off to Trim. Sitting snuggly along River Boyne, the town is home to Trim Castle, the largest Norman castle in Ireland. Feel free to explore the castle as well as the town at this stop.

You then head to Cavan for lunch before continuing across the border into Northern Ireland. Your next destination is the island town of Enniskillen, where you can spend some time exploring the cosy pubs, the castle, or simply stroll the charming streets.

Finally, cross the border again and enjoy the beautiful scenery of County Donegal as you head to Donegal Town, your base for the next two nights.

  • Gaze upon the Slieve League Cliffs, some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe
  • Dine in Leo’s Tavern, where famous artists like Enya and Clannad have performed
  • Explore the beauty and varied landscapes of County Donegal

You won’t believe your eyes this morning, as the first stop is at Slieve League Cliffs along the Wild Atlantic Way. These dramatic sea cliffs are the second highest in Ireland and three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher.

Keep your cameras out because the drive coming up is worth its own Instagram post. You journey through the stunning and windy Glengesh Pass, passing by mountains and steep valleys that really make you feel small (in the best way possible).

After a quick photo stop here, who can say where the road goes next? Only Enya. Just kidding. It’s time to head to Leo’s Tavern for lunch.

This pub is a popular local watering hole and many now-famous artists performed here, including Clannad, Moya Brennan, and Enya.

The final stop of the day is a visit to the Glenveagh National Park Visitor Centre. This national park lies in the heart of County Donegal and is home to protected wildlife in an array of pristine habitats. It’s the ideal escape for lovers of nature and wildlife; you'll just love cruising through this beautiful area and stopping for photos. The award-winning visitor centre is your destination, and you have some time to explore the area.

You head back to Donegal for the night. Drink at the pub, anyone?

  • Visit paradise at Mullaghmore Beach
  • Delve into the abundance of history in the coastal town of Sligo

The adventure continues on your third and final day, but don’t worry that it’s almost over. Great memories last a lifetime. Your first stop is Mullaghmore Beach, a paradise for those who love a good beach walk, which is exactly what you’re here to do, so grab your cameras.

You carry on to the coastal seaport of Sligo for lunch and a little exploration. This town is full of history, from its literary heritage that can be seen at the Sligo County Museum, to the medieval ruin of Sligo Abbey.

After lunch, enjoy a relaxing drive through the heart of Ireland as you make your way to Belvedere House and Gardens. Built in 1740, this hunting lodge was built by Richard Cassels, one of Ireland’s foremost Palladian architects, for Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere. You have time to explore here and soak up the dramatic architecture, the Victorian walled garden, and the surrounding forest.

A perfect way to end the trip and from here you head back to Dublin, arriving in the early evening.

Accommodation

Where does this tour stay overnight.

You stay two nights in Donegal.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page  HERE .

Alternatively, please email us your questions at  [email protected]  or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the  FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

I have more questions, who can help me?

If you have any more questions, call us on +44(0)131 226 3133, email [email protected] , or check out our full FAQs .
