  • Poems Celebrating the Journey of Becoming a Mother

1. "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes

2. "morning song" by sylvia plath, 3. "for my daughter" by weldon kees, 4. "the mother" by gwendolyn brooks, 5. "motherhood" by nikki giovanni, exploring the boundless love and joy of motherhood through poetry.

Becoming a mother is a transformative and awe-inspiring experience. The journey of motherhood is filled with countless emotions, from the sheer excitement of impending arrival to the overwhelming love and joy that fills a mother's heart. Poets have long sought to capture these profound feelings in their verses, crafting beautiful and heartfelt poems that celebrate the miracle of life and the bond between a mother and her child. In this article, we will explore a selection of poems that beautifully depict the journey of becoming a mother.

"Well, son, I'll tell you: Life for me ain't been no crystal stair."

Langston Hughes, a renowned poet of the Harlem Renaissance, eloquently portrays the struggles and sacrifices a mother endures for her child in "Mother to Son." Through vivid imagery, Hughes compares the hardships of life to a rickety staircase. This poem serves as a reminder that despite the challenges, a mother's strength and resilience remain unwavering.

"Love set you going like a fat gold watch." "And now you try Your handful of notes;"

Sylvia Plath's "Morning Song" captures the tender moments of early motherhood. Plath explores the awakening love and attachment a mother feels for her newborn child. The poem encapsulates the overwhelming responsibility and the bittersweet realization that the child will soon embark on their own journey.

"Looking into my daughter's eyes I read Beneath the innocence of morning flesh Concealed, hintings of death she does not heed."

Weldon Kees' "For My Daughter" delves into the complex emotions a mother experiences as her child grows older. The poem serves as a reflection on the passing of time and the fear of the unknown that a mother carries deep within her heart, even as she watches her daughter's innocence bloom.

"Abortions will not let you forget. You remember the children you got that you did not get,"

Gwendolyn Brooks' powerful and poignant poem, "The Mother," explores the painful topic of abortion. Through the voice of an anonymous mother, Brooks tackles the overwhelming guilt and grief associated with such a decision. This poem serves as a reminder that the journey of becoming a mother is not always straightforward, and it portrays the unbreakable bond between a mother and her unborn child.

"I'm so glad you're mine The look on your face as you sleep Holds the promise of life's tomorrows"

Nikki Giovanni's "Motherhood" beautifully expresses the deep sense of fulfillment and happiness experienced by a mother. The poem celebrates the small moments of motherhood, highlighting the joy found in simply watching a child sleep. Giovanni's words encapsulate the unconditional love and devotion that define the mother-child relationship.

Poetry has the incredible ability to capture the essence of the human experience, and the journey of becoming a mother is no exception. These poems provide a glimpse into the myriad of emotions that accompany the miracle of motherhood. Whether it's the joy, the sacrifices, the fears, or the unconditional love, these verses remind us of the profound impact that becoming a mother has on a woman's life. So, let these poems serve as a tribute to all the mothers out there, as they navigate this unique and incredible journey.

Poems That Showcase the Strength and Nurturing Power of Motherhood

As Mother’s Day approaches, I started to reflect on the magnitude of what it means to be a mother. I thought about all of the women who take on the role with such strength, selflessness, and grace. I thought about how incredible it is—this unconditional love that a mother feels for her child. She gives of herself in so many ways and never stops giving her love, energy, and support to her children.

I wanted to share some poems that have touched my heart that truly celebrate what it means to experience motherhood, to be inspired by our mothers, and to appreciate motherhood in all of its forms.

“Mother,” Nikita Gill

The water of her womb, your first home.

The body she pulled apart to welcome you to the world.

The spirit in you she helped grow with all she knew.

The heart that she gave you when yours fell apart.

You are her soft miracle.

So she gave you her eyes to see the best in the worst.

You carry your mother in your eyes.

Make her proud of all she watches you do.

This poem illustrates so beautifully the loving and giving nature of a woman. Our mothers provide us with our first home, they give us their hearts and their love, and we carry them with us forever. I especially love the last two lines of this piece. A mother’s love can be an eternal gift to us. No matter what happens, they are with us always in the things we do and the decisions we make. They are there in spirit and their love transcends the physical to guide us always.

“Gina Minks Toddings,” fullcirclepoetry

She touched her scars

Reminding herself how beautiful they are

Gracing her body like the stars

Across an endless sky

Aligning perfectly in time

Eternally sacred lines

Following the map they provide

The stories of her children

Our greatest blessings

Brought to life

I love this poem because it’s such a poignant reminder of what the body is capable of and how it should be viewed as nothing short of beautiful. To provide a home for another human being within your own is an act of immense love. There is no shame in carrying the scars or stretch marks from this time. They are, as the writer puts it, “like stars” that are mapping out the beginning of a journey into motherhood and a love that changes you forever.

Love has found me many

times during this lifetime.

Hopelessly besotted and

rocked to the core…

But the love I have for

my children is the only

love that split my soul

with each birth, and still

miraculously multiplies

with each year I am

their mother

I love the imagery in this poem. Mothers come in all forms, and I love that this poem also touches on the soul level of being a mother. Much like childbirth, motherhood can split your soul and forever change you in ways you could never imagine. In this process of breaking open, you can create space for love that will overflow and continue to grow for years to come.

Poem by Rupi Kaur

i struggle so deeply

to understand

how someone can

pour their entire soul

blood and energy

into someone

without wanting

anything in

i will have to wait till I’m a mother

Mothers often sacrifice themselves without ever expecting anything in return. They seek to fill their children with love. They seek to nurture and to protect and to provide, no matter how much it takes from them physically or mentally. Love like this is in its purest form and should always be celebrated.

Christy Anne Martine

A mother wraps

her love around

the heart of her

daughter, keeping

each beat steady

through the rhythm of life, until

wings take shape

and it’s time

for the soul

to take flight.

I love this poem because it describes the relationship mothers have with their children as they grow older. Mothers prepare their children for the world. They ensure that no matter what happens, their children remember that they are loved and capable beyond measure; they can keep this love with them always as they walk through life, knowing that their mother will always be there, whether physically or in spirit, to watch them soar.

A. Shea Writer

A mother’s heart

is never her own.

Bits of it are sown

into the souls

of her daughters

and her sons

I love the unconditional and infinite love described in this poem. It is eternal. A mother’s heart will take up a permanent residence in the hearts of her children. Our mothers always find a way to give us a home, and as we grow, we give their legacy a home within ourselves. It is the kind of love that persists and remains, even when everything else has changed.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the amazing women out there who have stepped into the role of motherhood with grace and resilience.

Poems on Motherhood: A Collection

Main image for the post titled Poems On Motherhood.

Table of Contents

In this collection of poems on motherhood, we’ll explore the experiences in detail, celebrating the love, joy, and sacrifices that come with being a mom.

Motherhood is the journey of a lifetime that (literally) brings the most profound, never-before-felt feelings to a woman’s life.

It’s a place where the heart finds its home (and also gets bashed about a bit in the process), yet a bond is formed that transcends all known boundaries.

Poems on Motherhood

In the realm of emotions, there’s no greater force than a mother’s unconditional love.

It’s the first type of love we experience like this – after all, I don’t know anyone whose love for their partner or parents is unconditional (correct me if I’m wrong about that).

The good news is, through verses of poetry, we can delve deep into how mothers express this infinite affection when it sometimes doesn’t come from their voices (after all, the daily chores do become tiresome!)

Poem by Sophie Slosarczyk titled Transfixed

Short Mother Poems

Sometimes, the simplest words carry the deepest meaning. This is certainly the case in my profession  as a copywriter.

And so it is with short mother poems, particularly in early motherhood, that encapsulates the beauty, the pure joy of hearing your baby’s laughter, the (seemingly) heavy weight of their bodies as you hold them in your arms, and, of course, the challenges faced too.

We all know that being a parent is not easy, and there are certainly difficult times.

Yet, in our fast-paced world, these brief verses convey the profound emotions of being a mother. And let me say that it’s seemingly impossible to sum it all up, but I do try my best!

The First Poem: Experience of Motherhood

The first time we attempt to express our emotions in words often leads to creating the first poem- at least, it did for me!

The poems in this post, all my own motherhood poems, reflect my gratitude for my kids and also the gratitude I feel for myself and, in fact, all the wonderful mothers who guide us through life, past and present.

Each line is carefully crafted, a poetic journey into the heart where a mother’s love resides.

Best Mother’s Day Poems: From Funny to Heartwarming

While a serious endeavor, motherhood is more so filled with moments of humor and pure, effortless joy.

With the coming of Spring, a ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ poem adds a delightful note to the day’s celebration, reminding us that laughter is essential to the journey!

Famous Poets: Voices of Wisdom in Motherhood

The world of poetry is truly enriched by the contributions of famous poets who’ve explored the theme of parenthood with depth and wisdom.

Some examples of the top of my head are Rudyard Kipling, Sylvia Plath, and Adrienne Rich, who’s verses resonate with the experiences of adult children reflecting on the impact of their mothers.

These poets have become voices in some fields, such as second-wave feminism, shaping the narrative of motherhood in literature.

A bundle of cute baby items in one image.

In reality, a book of poetry sits on a shelf and often gathers dust. But if read regularly, it becomes a vessel, carrying the collective experiences of mothers and children through the decades of time.

The verses within such a collection are a testament to the endurance of a mother’s love and its profound impact on the lives of those she touches.

As moms know, the mother figure is one of true strength, resilience, and humility.

Poem by Sophie Slosarczyk titled Incredible

You’re a good mother. Believe it!

In this collection of poems on motherhood, you may have any number of feelings crop up.

That’s normal! I say, invite all your feelings in. Mindfulness is one of my passions, and I advocate feeling all your feelings, regardless of whether they’re good or not.

I do hope these verses capture the essence of the amazing woman YOU are, who navigates the challenges of motherhood with grace and resilience.

I often explore how motherhood can shape a woman, from guilt and inadequacy to a luminous spirit whose blessed glow touches the childhood days of her babies. It’s a simple word that is often the best. Remember that 🙂

10 of the Best Poems about Mothers

By Dr Oliver Tearle (Loughborough University)

Looking for a classic poem for Mother’s Day? Look no further. Whilst sentimental rhymes and rather sappy doggerel fills many a Mothering Sunday greetings card, these ten poems represent some of the best statements about mothers and motherhood ever written.

If you enjoy these poems, you might also like our selection of some of the best and most beautiful mother-daughter poems .

Ann Taylor, ‘ My Mother ’.

Ann’s sister Jane Taylor (1783-1824) is best-remembered for having written the words to the children’s rhyme ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ , but this poem, written by Ann, is also well-known and has been much imitated and parodied.  It begins:

Who sat and watched my infant head When sleeping on my cradle bed, And tears of sweet affection shed? My Mother.

When pain and sickness made me cry, Who gazed upon my heavy eye, And wept for fear that I should die? My Mother …

The poem takes the form of a question-and-answer back-and-forth where the answer is always ‘my mother’. ‘My Mother’ is easy to parody and ridicule as a sentimental encomium to all mothers, but the poem, especially its second stanza, is a reminder that infant mortality was a very real danger in Taylor’s time, with many children not surviving past their first couple of years of life.

Being a mother is never an easy business, but mothers in Ann’s time lived with the very real threat that the child they had so lovingly borne and nurtured would never live to see adulthood.

John Greenleaf Whittier, ‘ Tribute to Mother ’.

A picture memory brings to me; I look across the years and see Myself beside my mother’s knee …

So begins this short poem, in which the American Romantic poet John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-92) recalls the time when he was a small child and sat beside his mother’s knee. The poet’s mother restrained his ‘selfish moods’ and taught him a ‘chastening love’. His mother was gentle but firm, inspiring in him a sense of right and wrong, and knowing what’s best for her son (‘My childhood’s needs’).

The love a mother has for her child is ‘chastening’ not just because it is designed to chasten or subdue the child’s wilder or more unacceptable impulses, instilling a strong moral sense into the child, but also because Whittier, now older and wilder, feels chastened by the love and patience his mother had for her son.

Edgar Allan Poe, ‘ To My Mother ’.

Because I feel that, in the Heavens above, The angels, whispering to one another, Can find, among their burning terms of love, None so devotional as that of ‘Mother’ …

Although not Poe’s most famous or best poem (that prize would surely go to ‘The Raven’ ), ‘To My Mother’ – an example of the Shakespearean sonnet form – is a touching tribute to mothers. But whose mother? Not, in fact, either Poe’s birth mother, nor his foster mother, but instead the mother of Poe’s wife, Virginia Clemm, who was also his cousin and just thirteen years old when Poe married her in 1836; she died in 1847.

Despite this rather intricate family history underscoring the poem, its sentiment – love of one’s mother-in-law – is not one that’s often expressed in poetry, so deserves inclusion here.

‘To My Mother’ is an intriguing poem negotiating a complex nexus of family relationships in Poe’s life: a poem called ‘To My Mother’ which is not about his own mother, and in fact mentions his biological mother only to highlight how much closer he is to someone else; and a poem which praises his mother-in-law, and becomes as much a poem about the love for a wife as it is a poem about a mother.

Christina Rossetti, ‘ Sonnets Are Full of Love ’.

In this sonnet, Rossetti (1830-94) praises her mother, ‘my first Love’, ‘on whose knee / I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome’. It’s a nice tribute to the poet’s mother and the role she played in making her daughter the poet – and woman – she had become :

Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome Has many sonnets: so here now shall be One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me To her whose heart is my heart’s quiet home, To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome …

Elizabeth Akers Allen, ‘ Rock Me to Sleep ’.

Elizabeth Chase Akers Allen (1832-1911) was an American author and poet whose 1859 poem, ‘Rock Me to Sleep, Mother’ (the ‘mother’ word is sometimes omitted) is still relatively well-known, thanks to the opening lines: ‘Backward, turn backward, O time, in thy flight; / Make me a child again, just for to-night’.

The request to be rocked to sleep, bordering on a desperate command, comes at us again and again, mimicking the soothing repetition that it yearns for in the desired movement back and forth, the rocking to sleep. Elizabeth Akers Allen wrote ‘Rock Me to Sleep’ while in Europe in the 1850s, but her home was in the United States, in New England. Here is the final stanza of the longer poem:

Mother, dear mother, the years have been long Since I last listened your lullaby song: Sing, then, and unto my soul it shall seem Womanhood’s years have been only a dream. Clasped to your heart in a loving embrace, With your light lashes just sweeping my face, Never hereafter to wake or to weep;— Rock me to sleep, mother, – rock me to sleep!

Rudyard Kipling, ‘ Mother o’ Mine ’.

If I were hanged on the highest hill, Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine! I know whose love would follow me still, Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

So begins this poem which was published as a dedication to Kipling’s 1892 book The Light That Failed . Because of the less-than-happy ending of that book, Kipling probably added ‘Mother o’ Mine’ to the beginning of the book as a way of saying sorry to his mother for having displeased her; she’d have preferred the happy ending.

A mother provides unconditional love for her children, and Kipling’s ‘Mother o’ Mine’ pays tribute to this fact. If Kipling were charged with some crime or misdemeanour, his mother would still love him; if he suffered some tragic misfortune such as being drowned, his mother would mourn him; and if he committed a sin so terrible that he was damned in body and soul, he knows that his mother would pray for his salvation.

Lola Ridge, ‘ Mother ’.

Lola Ridge (1873-1941) was born in Ireland but lived much of her adult life in the United States. She’s not read much now, but she was a pioneer of what some call ‘Anarchist poetry’, though her style might be co-opted more broadly under the banner of modernism.

The moon, the mirror, the shining stream: Ridge homes in on images of reflection in her poem, seeing a mother as someone who gives an ethereal beauty to the children’s image of themselves, not simply returning but magnifying it.

The image of the ‘shining stream’ returns later in the poem as ‘broken water’, suggesting that Ridge’s memory of her mother from her childhood is impressionistic and unclear. This short poem’s description of a mother’s love being like moonlight ‘turning harsh things to beauty’ makes it well worth reading:

Your love was like moonlight turning harsh things to beauty, so that little wry souls reflecting each other obliquely as in cracked mirrors . . . beheld in your luminous spirit their own reflection, transfigured as in a shining stream, and loved you for what they are not …

Carl Sandburg, ‘ Poems Done on a Late Night Car ’.

The third poem in this short sequence is only three lines long, and is titled simply ‘Home’. It features ‘a mother singing softly to a child restless and angry in the darkness’, and the way this sound suggests the idea of home to the poet.

Philip Larkin, ‘ Mother, Summer, I ’.

In this poem, Larkin reflects how his mother is suspicious of a nice summer’s day in case it is secretly harbouring thunderstorms; Larkin concludes that he has inherited his mother’s suspicious attitude towards perfect weather (and, by extension, perfection in general), and prefers the arrival of autumn as a time when expectations are lowered.

Despite his reputation as misanthropic and curmudgeonly, Larkin was a devoted son and, after his father’s death, he would frequently visit, and stay with, his mother at her house in Loughborough during the Christmas and Easter holidays (he had a day job as a librarian at the University of Hull).

Sylvia Plath, ‘ Morning Song ’.

This poem is about a mother waking in the night to tend to her crying baby, and so doesn’t celebrate the beauty of the sunrise or an aesthetically pleasing landscape as seen at dawn, as we might expect from the title of the poem.

Instead, we have Plath’s speaker (based on Plath, herself a mother to a small child when she penned this poem) stumbling out of bed ‘cow-heavy and floral’ in her Victorian nightgown. For our money, this is one of Plath’s finest poems .

Poems about motherhood cover topics as wide-ranging as anxiety about parenting to child-rearing advice. Verses can also be a metaphor for nature and remember mothers who've passed away. Far from only celebrating motherhood in a positive light, these poems cover complex issues such as bad parenting practices and how mothers can care for greater humanity.

May Sarton: "For My Mother"

In this poem, May Sarton decides not to focus on her aging mother's health challenges. Instead, she will remember how strong her mother was, as this excerpt reveals:

I summon you now Not to think of The ceaseless battle With pain and ill health, The frailty and the anguish. No, today I remember The creator, The lion-hearted.

John Greenleaf Whittier: "Tribute to Mother"

Here, 19th-century poet John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker also known for his abolitionism, reflects on how his mother disciplined him when he was a child.

But wiser now, a man gray grown, My childhood's needs are better known. My mother's chastening love I own.

Robert Louis Stevenson: "To My Mother"

Another well-known poet,  Robert Louis Stevenson , reflects on his relationship with his mother.

You too, my mother, read my rhymes For love of unforgotten times, And you may chance to hear once more The little feet along the floor.

Joanne Bailey Baxter: "Mother On Mother's Day"

In this poem, Joanne Bailey Baxter remembers her late mother who left behind a resilient family. This tribute may bring comfort to those mourning the loss of a loved one.

For she had fulfilled his prophesy Spreading love, honor, and hope She instilled in those she left behind The ability to understand and cope.

Rudyard Kipling: "Mother o’ Mine"

Rudyard Kipling 's rather sentimental poem honors the unconditional love a mother gives to a child, even if the child has committed a crime. Elsewhere in the poem, he describes how a mother's love can even touch a child in hell.

If I were hanged on the highest hill, Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine! I know whose love would follow me still, Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

Walt Whitman: "There was a Child Went Forth"

Walt Whitman describes motherhood very traditionally in this poem about childhood.

The mother at home, quietly placing the dishes on the supper-table; The mother with mild words—clean her cap and gown, a wholesome odor falling off her person and clothes as she walks by...

Lucy Maud Montgomery: "The Mother"

In the 19th century, men and women poets wrote about motherhood in sentimental ways. Men tended to write from the perspective of a grown son, and women typically wrote from the daughter's perspective. Sometimes, though, they wrote from the mother's viewpoint. Here, Lucy Maud Montgomery, known for her " Anne of Green Gables" book series, writes about a mother contemplating what her infant son's future might be.

No one so near to you now as your mother! Others may hear your words of beauty, But your precious silence is mine alone; Here in my arms I have enrolled you, Away from the grasping world I fold you, Flesh of my flesh and bone of my bone.

Sylvia Plath: "Morning Song"

Sylvia Plath , a poet remembered for "The Bell Jar," married Ted Hughes and had two children: Frieda, in 1960, and Nicholas, in 1962. She and Hughes separated in 1963, but this poem is among those she composed shortly after her children's births. In it, she describes her own experience of being a new mother, contemplating the infant for whom she is now responsible. It is far different than the sentimental poetry of generations earlier.

Love set you going like a fat gold watch. The midwife slapped your footsoles, and your bald cry Took its place among the elements.

Sylvia Plath: "Medusa"

Sylvia Plath's relationship with her own mother was a troubled one. In this poem, Plath describes both the closeness with her mother and her frustrations. The title expresses some of Plath's feelings about her mother, as does this excerpt:

In any case, you are always there, Tremulous breath at the end of my line, Curve of water upleaping To my water rod, dazzling and grateful, Touching and sucking.

Edgar Allen Poe: "To My Mother"

Edgar Allen Poe 's poem is dedicated not to his own late mother, but to the mother of his late wife. As a 19th century work, it belongs to the more sentimental tradition of motherhood poems.

My mother—my own mother, who died early, Was but the mother of myself; but you Are mother to the one I loved so dearly.

Anne Bradstreet: "Before the Birth of One of Her Children"

Anne Bradstreet , the first published poet of colonial British America, wrote of life in Puritan New England. This 28-line poem reminds us of the fragility of life and the risks of childbirth, and Bradstreet muses on what might happen to her husband and children should she succumb to those risks. She acknowledges that her husband might remarry but fears that a stepmother could be harmful to her children.

Yet love thy dead, who long lay in thine arms, And when thy loss shall be repaid with gains Look to my little babes, my dear remains. And if thou love thyself, or loved’st me, These O protect from stepdame’s injury.

Robert William Service: "The Mother"

The poet Robert William Service acknowledges that motherhood changes, and children grow more distant with the years. He describes the memories that mothers carry as "a little ghost / Who ran to cling to you!"

Your children distant will become, And wide the gulf will grow; The lips of loving will be dumb, The trust you used to know Will in another's heart repose, Another's voice will cheer... And you will fondle baby clothes And brush away a tear.

Judith Viorst: "Some Advice From a Mother to Her Married Son"

One job of motherhood is to raise a child to be a successful adult. In this poem,  Judith Viorst gives some advice to mothers who are, in turn, offering tips to their sons about marriage.

The answer to do you love me isn't, I married you, didn't I? Or, Can't we discuss this after the ballgame is through? It isn't, Well that all depends on what you mean by 'love'.

Langston Hughes: "Mother to Son"

Underwood Archives/Getty Images

Langston Hughes, one of the key figures of the Harlem Renaissance , describes the advice a Black mother might share with her son. Racism and poverty alike color her words.

Well, son, I'll tell you: Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. It's had tacks in it, And splinters, ...

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper: "The Slave Mother"

The Black experience in the U.S. includes centuries of enslavement. In this 19th century poem, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, writing from the perspective of a free Black woman, imagines the feelings an enslaved mother with no control over her children's fate might have.

He is not hers, although she bore For him a mother's pains; He is not hers, although her blood Is coursing through his veins! He is not hers, for cruel hands May rudely tear apart The only wreath of household love That binds her breaking heart.

Emily Dickinson: "Nature The Gentlest Mother Is"

In this poem, Emily Dickinson applies her view of mothers as kind and gentle nurturers to nature itself.

Nature the gentlest mother is, Impatient of no child, The feeblest of the waywardest. Her admonition mild

Henry Van Dyke: "Mother Earth"

Many poets and writers have used motherhood as a metaphor for the world itself. In this poem, Henry Van Dyke does the same, viewing the earth through the lens of a loving mother.

Mother of all the high-strung poets and singers departed, Mother of all the grass that weaves over their graves the glory of the field, Mother of all the manifold forms of life, deep-bosomed, patient, impassive, Silent brooder and nurse of lyrical joys and sorrows!

Dorothy Parker: "Prayer for a New Mother"

Many poets have written of the Virgin Mary as a model mother. In this poem, Dorothy Parker, known more for her biting wit, ponders what life must have been like for Mary as a mother of a tiny infant. She wishes Mary could have a typical mother-son relationship with her baby rather than viewing the child as the Messiah.

Let her have laughter with her little one; Teach her the endless, tuneless songs to sing, Grant her her right to whisper to her son The foolish names one dare not call a king.

Julia Ward Howe: "Mother's Day Proclamation"

Julia Ward Howe wrote the words to what is known as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" during the Civil War. After the war, she became more skeptical and critical of the consequences of war, and she began to hope for the end to all wars. In 1870, she wrote a Mother's Day proclamation promoting the idea of a Mother's Day for peace.

Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.

Philip Larkin: "This Be the Verse"

Sometimes, poets unload their frustrations with their parents by writing very frank verse. Philip Larkin, for one, does not hesitate to describe his parents as imperfect.

They f*** you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you.

In the soft glow of the moon’s embrace, I sing to you, heart’s tender grace. A lullaby of love, softly spun, In this song, our hearts won.   Gentle words, a soothing tide, In my arms, safely abide. In my words, a promise to keep, In your dreams, through nights deep.   In each step, a path I pave, For you, my love, strong and brave. A New Chapter

A new chapter begins, oh new mother dear With your precious baby, oh so near You will learn what love is in a whole new way And cherish every moment, every single day

The sleepless nights and endless feedings too May test your strength, but they’ll also renew Your appreciation for the simplest things A newborn’s coo or the way their tiny hand clings

Their first smile, giggle, and gasp of surprise Will light up your world and bring tears to your eyes You’ll watch them grow and learn so much And feel your heart overflow with love’s gentle touch

In time, they’ll crawl, walk, and run And you’ll chase after them, full of fun Their milestones will be your joy And their achievements, your pride and truest employ

Through it all, you’ll hold them close and tight And give them all the love and care in sight For being a mother is a privilege and honor too And nothing in this world is more precious than you

So cherish this new chapter in your life For it’s filled with moments that are truly rife With love, laughter, and endless hope And you and your new baby are truly a phenomenal, blessed scope.

The Beauty of Matrescence: A Poem on the Journey to Motherhood

  • May 9, 2023

Matrescence, a journey new

From woman to mother, a metamorphosis true

A time of change, of growth and discovery

As we embrace our roles as mothers, and our newfound identity

We shed the past, and step into the present

A time of uncertainty, but also of great potential

As we navigate the challenges of motherhood, and find our footing

We are stronger than we know, and capable of so much more

Matrescence, a time to be celebrated

A time to embrace our inner strength, and to nurture our growing families

As we journey through this transformation, let us support one another

And celebrate the beauty of becoming a mother.

Night Shift in the Home for Convalescents

A poem for Sunday

a broken down bed frame in a patch of tall grass by the water

There is much in this drawer that is no longer in use: a notebook with ribbon to mark passages once of some importance, a tortoiseshell comb sadly made of tortoise shell, a prayer book bound in mother-of-pearl. Mother-of-pearl. And sounds: a blurring of bees in the air no longer heard in the wild. Everything at once, she had said. All that you remember must be written down. Bed linens sailing the wind, curtains flaring beyond the windscreens, lilacs soon to lie on the ground. There was a quickening in the heart whenever I saw him standing in a field of bloom and hum then suddenly not there. The field gone. The house. The road now under a newer road. Trees along it long cut down. No canopy of hope. And the swamp? Who knows what became of it. Skunk cabbage and buttercups, cattails, polliwogs and crayfish with their pulse-train song. We caught them in jars of pond water. Not for eating, no. To watch them live. Wash your mother’s clothes one last time and put them away— like wrapping a scoop of snow in tissue paper.

This poem has been excerpted from the collection You Are Here , edited by Ada Limón.
