Tour description

Check all of rome's most unmissable attractions off your list in just one day..

As the famous saying goes, a lifetime isn't enough for Rome. But if you're eager to experience the most iconic sites in the city in a shorter amount of time, this Rome in a Day tour is calling your name. From the Colosseum to the Vatican—not to mention the countless must-sees in the historic center—we've crafted the perfect itinerary to ensure you see and do it all in one unforgettable day. The best way to see Rome is on foot, so get ready to do a lot of walking!

Discover history and art in the historic center on a walking tour.

Your Rome in a Day tour begins in one of Rome's most beautiful squares, Piazza Navona, home to Bernini's Fountain of Four Rivers. Your guided stroll through the historical center of the city continues past the Pantheon: a 1,900-year-old temple that has inspired countless buildings around the world throughout the centuries, including the U.S. Capitol.

You’ll also explore the most idyllic side of the Eternal City, the Rome of Audrey Hepburn and Federico Fellini, bursting with piazzas and fountains, gelato and photo ops. That includes the world-famous Trevi Fountain, where Fellini’s lovers cavorted in La Dolce Vita. The morning finishes at Piazza Venezia where you'll admire an impressive monument affectionately nicknamed "the wedding cake" by locals. You'll break for lunch, and even though it isn't included in the tour price, your guide will share recommendations for every taste and budget.

Explore the Colosseum with an expert guide.

After lunch, you'll reconvene with your guide and small group and walk to an overlook of the Roman Forum. Your knowledgeable guide will set the scene, introducing you to the ancient city and pointing out various attractions that you'll visit later on.

From there, you'll take advantage of express access Colosseum tickets to step into the iconic amphitheater for an insightful Colosseum tour of all the general access areas on the first and second tiers. Since there are never more than 18 people in the group, this is a unique opportunity to interact with your guide and learn about this spectacular structure in a way that's just not possible on your own.

See the best of the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, with private transportation from central Rome.

Following your Colosseum tour, our Rome in a Day tour continues aboard a comfortable private minibus for a seamless transfer across the river to the Vatican.

Pre-reserved skip-the-line tickets allow you to avoid the extremely long wait to enter the Vatican Museums so you can get right into the highlights of the collection with your guide. Our specially designed itinerary showcases the very best of the nine miles of art and antiquities to make sure you're engaged and entertained throughout, while not missing any of the gems of the collection such as the Apollo Belvedere, Laocoon and His Sons, and Raphael Rooms.

You’ll end your full day tour of Rome in the Sistine Chapel. After we part ways, you can choose to spend more time in the Vatican Museums, soaking up the history and art surrounding you.

If you only have a short period of time to see the absolute best that Rome has to offer, our Rome in a Day tour is the perfect way to maximize your time and experience the wonders of the city in the company of an expert local guide and small group of fellow travelers.

Excellent tour if you only have a day in Rome

Jan 03, 2024

Great one day comprehensive tour of the major sites of Rome. Lots of walking, but that is expected. Tickets to the various sites are included in the price of the tour, and our guide Hector, ensure smooth entry into all of them with minimal waiting time. I know we just scratched the surface of all that Rome has to offer, but if you have limited time, or want to hit the highlights before going back to see them in depth, this is the tour to take. Highly recommended.

What travelers say about our trips to Rome

Travel tips for visiting rome.

When is the best time of year to visit Rome? There are a lot of good things to be said about taking trips to Rome in the off-season. From October to May, you’ll have fewer crowds to contend with at the most popular sites, and you’ll enjoy more temperate weather when you’re out exploring. Just make sure you avoid Easter week in the spring, when you may find many attractions and restaurants closed for the holiday.

Summer is the busiest time of year, and when most travelers will be taking trips to Rome, Italy. The upside is that you’ll enjoy plenty of long, sunny days to explore the city—and hot weather is the perfect excuse for taking an extra gelato break (or two).

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, you can’t beat our Rome vacation packages that visit the city for New Year’s Eve . It’s an excellent time to soak in the sights and celebrate among locals.

If you’re planning a trip to Rome, it’s probably because you’ve already got the Colosseum and Roman Forum on your “must-see” list. On our Rome tours, you’ll be able to skip the lines at these top attractions—which means you’ll have more time for sightseeing and learning about your surroundings.

All our Rome guided tours are led by a local expert who’ll help bring ancient history to life. You’ll also enjoy free time to explore the city on your own, or you can add excursions to uncover more of your destination. On our Rome tours, you’ll find excursions to the Vatican and St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Catacombs, and even a cooking class. All of our Rome guided tours make it easy to see the best of the city, with local experts leading the way.

Roman food includes well-known Italian classics (we mean pizza), but while you’re there you may want to keep your eye out for meals that are distinctly Romana . Pastas like cacio e pepe , spaghetti tossed with pepper and pecorino cheese, and amatriciana , a spicy tomato sauce with guanciale, are two famous dishes that hail right from Rome.

On Rome tours in the off-season, you might find fried artichokes—a classic dish made by popular by Rome’s Jewish residents. Speaking of fried food, there’s also supplí , a rice ball that’s similar to Sicilian arancini .

No matter what, you’re sure to find something delicious to eat in Rome. With our Rome vacation packages, you’ll enjoy included meals that highlight the cuisine of the region. Plus, you can rely on your Tour Director—a local expert!—to point you toward the city’s best restaurants in your free time.

Even in the winter, the weather in Rome is fairly temperate. So, no matter when you travel, it’s a safe bet to say you can leave the heavy coat at home. You will want to pack light layers so that you’re comfortable for cooler mornings or evenings, and a comfortable pair of walking shoes is a must. All our guided tours to Rome involve some walking on cobblestone streets and unpaved ground, so you’ll want something you can wear for light activity. In the summer, you may want extra sun protection as days can get especially hot and humid.

Once you’ve booked one of our Rome vacation packages, you’ll receive a more detailed packing list that’s tailored to your trip! You can also download our Tour Companion App to take all the info you need to know on the go.

Tour Description

Discover the essence of the eternal city in a single day.

With nearly 3,000 years of history behind it and boasting 900 churches, over 100 museums, countless artistic masterpieces and archaeological sites, the Eternal City is full of never-ending surprises - and a source of inspiration to last a lifetime.

But even if you are here just for one day, with the right planning it's possible to visit the most important highlights of this amazing city - and that's exactly what our Rome in A Day Group Tour is about. Drawing on our years of experience, w e've carefully designed this itinerary to allow you to get the very best out of this extraordinary city in a single day. Traveling comfortably between the sites by minivan will mean you can save your time and energy for the monuments themselves!

The Roman Forum: Walk in the footsteps of emperors

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live at the time of the Ancient Romans? The Roman Forum is probably the best place to imagine the life of our ancestors: as you walk down its ancient roads, your guide will bring these majestic ruins back to life. On our tour, you will see the ruins of the amazing buildings that where our modern concepts of government and politics were born , such as the Senate  (or the Rostra ) , where Cicero and other orators gave their passionate speeches - sometimes paying for their political views with their lives. We'll also admire the majestic triumphal arches that dot the area, built by the ancient emperors to celebrate their victories.

Each one of these magnificent arches has a fascinating story to tell: in front of the Arch of Titus , you will listen to the sad story of the sack of Jerusalem; gazing on the impressive Arch of Septimius Severus  you'll learn about the emperor's military campaigns and the terrible story of his eldest son Caracalla, who killed his younger brother out of jealousy and a thirst for power. Discover the religious beliefs of the Romans and their rituals while exploring the House of the Vestal Virgins and  the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina , still perfectly preserved even today. Exploring the Temple of Julius Caesar , meanwhile, we'll discover the close connection between power and religion - Caesar, dictator in life, was elevated to the ranks of the divine after his death.

The Colosseum: Blood and sand in Rome’s iconic arena

Built by the Flavian dynasty at the end of the 1st century AD, the Colosseum is by far the most iconic building in Rome. Anxious to win back the love and support of the Roman populace after Nero’s disgraceful reign, the  emperor Vespasian started the construction of the monument that was going to be the symbol of Rome for the next 2,000 years. Financed with the treasures taken during the sack of Jerusalem, the Colosseum was built in an incredibly short amount of time - just  9 years , thanks to the famous ingenuity of the Romans and the hard work of thousands of slaves in equal mesaure.

When he inaugurated the Colosseum in 80 AD, Vespasian’s eldest son Titus was determined to get off to a great start: he offered 100 days of shows during which thousands of animals and people were killed, all for the entertainment of the  65,000 bloodthirsty spectators sitting on the bleachers.

Experience the unique atmosphere of Rome's historic centre

In Rome, spectacular art isn't just confined to the walls of dusty museums: here, art and history are literally around every corner  - and there’s nowhere better to truly appreciate how they are still an intrinsic part of city life than the metropolis' pulsating historic center. W ith the help of our expert guide guide, on this tour you'll learn the fascinating stories behind the city's most beautiful squares, fountains and monuments:  admire the Baroque splendor of the Trevi Fountain (don’t forget to throw a coin in its magical waters to ensure your return to Rome), and enter the majestic ancient Roman   Pantheon (from the exterior).  Learn  how the ancients built a dome that even today remains the largest of its kind ever constructed!  Finall, take a stroll in the beautiful Piazza Navona, and marvel at the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers - the  work of Baroque master  Gianlorenzo Bernini.

Lunch at a modern, yet authentic Roman restaurant.

During the tour, you will get to enjoy a sit-down lunch in an amazing restaurant just a stone's throw away from the Vatican Museums. Here you will get to experience a real Roman lunch, including a charcuterie board with bruschetta, cured meats, and cheese with honey and jam. Then you get to chose between a pasta Amatriciana or Carbonara. Last but not least, a home-made dessert is also included as well as water, a glass of wine and coffee during your lunch.

* If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know immediately upon booking so we can inform the restaurant accordingly.

The Vatican: 2,000 years of art and spirituality

At 109 acres and with a popualation of 1,000 citizens, the Vatican City is the smallest country in the whole world.  But don’t let these numbers fool you: in its tiny territory the Vatican houses the 5th largest museum in the world as well as the world’s largest Catholic Basilica.

With the help of your expert guide, you will discover the most renowned treasures of this unique country. In the prestigious  Vatican Museums , you will come face to face with the most celebrated statues of emperors, gods, muses and philosophers from the past. As you walk through galleries and courtyards, you will meet the  Apollo Belvedere  and marvel at his divine beauty; admire the Laocoon  and listen to the tragic destiny of the priest who sought to warn the Trojans not to trust the Trojan Horse .

Walk through the celebrated Gallery of the Tapestries and the Hall  of Maps;  discover why Raphael's art was considered to have been inspired by God himself. Finally enter the   Sistine Chapel,  the spectacular highlight of the Vatican musuems itinerary, and  breathe in the magic of  Michaelangelo’s timeless art.

The last part of your journey will take you to enormous  Saint Peter’s Basilica , where you will be touched by the beautiful Pietà  -   sculpted by Michelangelo when he was just 23 years old out of a single block of Carrara marble. Gaze up at the the main altar crowned by Gianlorenzo Bernini’s  extraordinary bronze canopy.  According to tradition, the Apostle Peter is buried right here, directly beneath the altar where the Pope celebrates mass.

Join us on this unforgettable journey to discover the fascinating stories and figures that have shaped the Eternal City.

Our guide, Erturk, was exceptionally well versed in the history of Rome. He made his talk informative and descriptive. Having his visual aids helped us see how the Forum and the Colesseum probably looked originally. He gave us a timeline of events that led to the present, giving and showing us information unearthed by the archeological digs that are uncovering the history of Rome. In other words Erturk was a fountain of information. He was also highly aware of the extreme heat of the day and was consistently making sure we were as comfortable as possible; keeping us in shade while he spoke, making sure we refilled water bottles, and having us sit when possible. A very kind and considerate guide. The whole tour was a great taste of the historical sites of Rome. His time was well managed so as to give us the most from our day. Thank you Erturk for a great tour.

5 days in Rome: All the highlights and a day trip

People walking in Rome

From its grand monuments to the incredible food scene, an entire lifetime wouldn't be enough to explore every part of Italy ’s capital. But if you only have 5 days in Rome , it’s quite possible to fit in all the main attractions and even squeeze in a day trip to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast . During your 5 days in Rome, remember to take the time to visit some good restaurants to experience some amazing local food .

Day 1: The Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Monti, Piazza Venezia, Campidoglio

People visiting The Colosseum in Rome during the day

Start your trip with a visit to the most iconic symbol of Rome—the Colosseum . This massive amphitheater has been around for more than 2,000 years and it once held up to 80,000 spectators gathered there to cheer on their favorite gladiator. Tip: Buy a skip-the-line ticket to avoid standing in line in the scorching heat; you’ll also benefit from the commentary from your guide. The ticket to the Colosseum covers entry to the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill .

After exploring the arena and admiring the Arch of Constantine , head to the Roman Forum as it complements the Colosseum beautifully. If you choose to explore the Colosseum on your own, we recommend a guided tour of the Roman Forum to learn more about the fascinating history. Complete your morning by climbing to the top of Palatine Hill to enjoy breathtaking views of the ruins from above.

People visiting the Piazza Venezia in Rome during the day

After walking up an appetite, head to the delightful Monti district for lunch. It’s one of the oldest neighborhoods in Rome with a cool and charming vibe that attracts many locals. Here, you can find many boutique stalls and artisan works, alongside some of the best bars and restaurants. Don’t miss the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Basilica di Santa Prassede .

In the late afternoon, head to Piazza Venezia and marvel at the Altar of the Fatherland, an imposing monument that’s hard to miss. The Vittoriano offers breathtaking views of Rome (the first two terraces are free but the third and highest has an admission fee), and we recommend taking the glass elevator to the top for one of Rome’s best views . Next to Vittoriano is Capitoline Hill that also offers stunning views of the city. Check out the Piazza del Campidoglio , a unique square designed by Michelangelo. Alternatively, go with a guided tour that will take you to the famous attractions in the area.

Day 2: Centro Storico

People visiting the Spanish Steps in Rome during the day

Start your second day in Rome with a leisurely stroll around Centro Storico . Wear comfortable shoes and lose yourself in the heart of Rome, where surprises await you around every corner. Wander through the picturesque cobblestone alleyways and spot some of the city’s iconic attractions: the Spanish Steps , Trevi Fountain , Pantheon , Piazza Navona (known for its art market) and Campo de’Fiori (known for its outdoor food market). This walking tour will take you to the main attractions in the area.

Day 3: Vatican City, Castel Sant’Angelo, Trastevere

People visiting the Vatican City in Rome in the evening

On the third day, take a day trip to the smallest country in the world—the Vatican City .

People at the Vatican museum in Rome

Start early at the Vatican Museums , which consist of 26 museums with an enormous collection of artifacts; it’ll take days and weeks to appreciate all the pieces on display. With only one day, we recommend a guided Vatican Museum Tour to see the main highlights. Explore the Sistine Chapel , which boasts two of the world’s greatest masterpieces: Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes and his Giudizio Universale (Last Judgment).

Next, visit St. Peter’s Basilica , one of the world’s largest churches and a great work of art. Take the chance to explore the lofty dome; the view from there is spectacular.

People visiting the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome

After leaving St Peter’s Square, walk down Via della Concilliazione which will lead you to the Castel Sant’Angelo . Sitting on the banks of River Tiber and one of the oldest buildings in Rome, Castel Sant’Angelo has a fascinating history: it was used as a fortress and a castle, and is now a museum. The rooftop terrace offers one of the best views of Rome.

End the day with dinner at Trastevere . It is bursting with restaurants and has a bustling nightlife. Join a food tour to experience the local food scene or check out this list for some of the best trattorias in Rome – there’ll be at least one in Trastevere.

Day 4: Day trip to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast

Boats at the Amalfi Coast

While you’re in Rome, don’t miss two of southern Italy’s UNESCO-listed destinations. Take a day trip to the ancient city of Pompeii and then embark on a scenic drive along Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Few places in the world will wow you like the lost city of Pompeii; it’s frozen in time and is one of the most popular archeological sites in the world. After visiting the ancient ruins, drive along the Amalfi Coast for some of the most picturesque views in Italy. Stop by the terraced city of Positano before calling it a day and heading back to Rome.

Day 5: Villa Borghese, shopping or cooking

People in face masks walking in Villa Borghese, a public park in Rome

On your last day, take a relaxing walk through one of Rome's largest parks, the Villa Borghese . Whether you’re into sculptures, museums, beautiful gardens or even animals, you can find it all here. The Borghese Gallery is a must-visit as it holds one of the most impressive collections of Roman, Renaissance and Baroque artwork.

Spend less time queuing and more time admiring the artwork with a skip-the-line ticket . You can also explore Villa Borghese on a bike and spend some time amongst the beautiful flowerbeds, fountains and temples.

via veneto rome

For a spot of shopping, head to Via Veneto , one of the most elegant and famous shopping streets in Rome which boasts some of the best shops and restaurants. Continue shopping on Via del Corso , which is the longest street in Rome with dozens of high-end shops.

You’re bound to pass Piazza Venezia and Piazza del Popolo on your shopping excursion. If you have a bit more time on your hands,, take a cooking class. Try your hand at making pizza and gelato or pasta and tiramisù —it could be a fun family activity.

1 Day in Rome Itinerary: Walking Tour of the City’s 16 Top Sites

R. C. Staab

No one traveling to the Eternal City wants to be limited to one day for a tour of Rome . But life happens – a flight cancellation at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, limited free time before or after a business trip, or as a stopover on an Italian cruise before heading to Florence or Venice. If visiting Rome as a first-time visitor or returning for the 10th time, here’s the plan for a day-long walk to see 16 spectacular, iconic sites.

15,000 Steps, One Full Day, All the Must-See Sites

This walking tour is roughly split into two parts. Start with the highlights of Ancient Rome from Circus Maximus to Piazza Navona. Then see the splendors of Post-Imperial Rome from Piazza Navona to St. Peter’s Cathedral. Start by taking Metro B (blue) public transport to the Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo) stop or a taxi to the Piazza di Porta Capena.

To make good use of time, the one-day Rome itinerary only includes two extended stops, the Colosseum/Roman Forums and St. Peter’s. Start in the early morning around 8 or 9 am with an eye to finishing before St. Peter’s Basilica closes at 7 pm.

Before embarking, best to buy a Colosseum/Forum ticket well in advance at Coop Culture , the only official (and cheapest) site to buy tickets. At a minimum, you should buy a single-day admission ticket to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hills.

Rome is a city perpetually under repair. Prepare yourself mentally for blocked entrances, closed buildings, and scaffolding at well-known sites.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  There is no delicate way to say this, but one of my least favorite travel tips is to encourage people to carry toilet paper or wipes while on a long walk in Rome. Public restrooms are scarce and don’t always have amenities.

Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo)

On this sightseeing tour, Circus Maximus is the largest and one of the least impressive sights unless an Italian celebration or concert is underway. Measuring a third-of-a-mile long almost to the Tiber River, this was the largest stadium in the Roman Empire. At full capacity, more than 250,000 people could witness chariot races, gladiatorial contests, and other public events. Today the stands are gone, replaced by a grassy park in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills. The ruins of the palatial homes from the Palatine Hills particularly frame the north side. A new twist on guided tours is to rent a Virtual Reality tour  for your next visit.

Was Ben-Hur  filmed here? No, the film crew created the famous chariot race at Cinecittà in Rome, the largest film studio in Europe.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  The Rome Metro is easy to use but the smallest system in Europe and isn’t close to many hotels. Best to save energy for the day and splurge on a taxi to start this Roma tour.

Baths of Caracella (Terme di Caracalla)

Just a five-minute walk from Circus Maximus past the Stadio delle Terme di Caracalla (a stadium used for track and field) along the appropriately named Viale delle Terme di Caracalla is the Baths of Caracalla. Arriving here, the outer walls stand tall, enclosing a vast area that was once filled with pools, gardens, and other bathing facilities. Built between the years 212 and 216 under the direction of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus, more commonly known as Emperor Caracalla, the Baths were one of the greatest and most spectacular thermal complexes in ancient times.

Inside the Baths , there are no statues or frescoes so best to enjoy the exterior. Skip the tour inside.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  The Baths are open each day at 9 am daily and the cost is 13 Euro for admission for adults. Tickets are available here  at Coopculture.it.  The baths are cavernous so a   guided tour  is helpful in envisioning how thousands of Romans would have congregated here daily.

Arch of Constantine (Arco di Costantino)

Take a short walk north along Via di S. Gregorio, staying on the west side in the shadow of the Palatine Hills. For a moment, imagine yourself in the 4th century, returning with the troops from a victory far afield in Roman Europe.  Ahead is an impressive arch as crowds wait to cheer your army’s entrance to the city center.  Today, the crowds are still there but it’s the march of tourists who admire the Arch of Constantine , a triumphal arch dedicated to the emperor Constantine the Great to commemorate his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312. This masterpiece of Roman architecture with friezes and sculptures has served as an inspiration for architects of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Marble Arch in England (both in cities that were once part of the Roman Empire).

The Colosseum (Colosseo)

Looming over the Arch of Constantine is the most iconic landmark of the Roman Empire – the Colosseum. Built between 72 and 80, it’s the largest amphitheater in the world with a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators. Although it was used for a variety of religious ceremonies and festivals, it’s arguably best known as an arena for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and public executions.

Even after almost 2000 years, the Colosseum is the most intact landmark from Ancient Rome and well worth the visit by either buying an admission ticket  (usually gobbled up by all the tour companies) or joining a guided tour.  Because there is a limit of 3,000 people on any given day, planning months in advance is crucial. Give yourself enough time to climb up to the stands for the view.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  While there are many tour operators and ticket sellers offering Colosseum tickets, it’s best to stick with reliable companies such as Viator  or Getyourguide.   Se riously, buy your tickets six or seven months ahead.  Worst-case scenario is to stand in line for day-of tickets or bargain with the ticket scalpers on site.

The Roman Forum (Foro Romano)

From the Colosseum , follow the crowds to a short distance to another triumphal arch – the Arch of Titus – but first pay to enter the Roman Forum . Because this was once Central Rome, the invaders who helped destroy the Empire also destroyed most of the temples, government buildings, and businesses that served about a million people in and around Rome. First is the Temple of Saturn, the financial center of ancient Rome, and the House of the Vestal Virgins. Entering the Forum proper, walk past the Temple of Jupiter, the Senate House, and the Basilica Julia.

Continue north toward the tall building with a bell tower on top. As of October 2023, there is only one exit to the Capitoline hills at the far end – saving considerable time from back-tracking and going all around the Forum on the outside. Stay to the left and follow the signs to the toilet. From there, take the ramp up the incline to the exit, and then once outside the gate, take the curve up the hill staying to the right as much as possible. Make sure to look back for an excellent view of the Roman Forum.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  If you’ve skipped buying a ticket to the Colosseum, go to Coopculture.it   to buy a single ticket to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hills. If you’ve waited until the last minute, across from the main entrance near the Colosseum, the guards can point to a QR code: a relatively quick way to buy a Forum ticket for immediate use. Any guidebook or audio guide is helpful here. Either download an app from your phone or buy a guide online at GetYourGuide.

Piazza del Campidoglio

Coming from the Roman Forum , what a surprise to see the 16th-century Piazza di Campidoglio majestically appear on top of Capitoline Hill, the most important of Rome’s seven hills. Designed by Michelangelo, this exquisite Piazza is surrounded by the Palazzo Senatorio, the seat of the Rome City Council, and the Capitoline Museums in the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo. At the center of the Piazza is the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, a Roman emperor from the 2nd century.

Tickets with a multimedia experience are here  if you want to return another day.

Capitoline Wolf

Back in the direction of the Roman Forum on the other side of the Piazza is a bronze sculpture that sits on top of a column. This is Capitoline Wolf , a she-wolf nursing two twins, Romulus and Remus. The twin brothers are the main figures in the story of the founding of Rome by Romulus, following his fratricide of Remus. The image of a she-wolf suckling the twins in their infancy has been a symbol of the city of Rome and the ancient Romans since at least the 3rd century BC.

Descend the gently sloping staircase, the Cordonata, and note how the steps differ from the norm.  Michelangelo designed the stairs, as well as the series of reliefs depicting various scenes from Roman history.

At the bottom of the stairs, turn right to follow the white marble wall until a much larger, less subtle staircase appears on the right.

Vittorio Emanuele II Monument (Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II)

The Vittorio Emanuele II memorial was built to commemorate the unification of Italy and to honor Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. This grand monument, built between 1885 and 1935, is decorated with a variety of statues, reliefs, and inscriptions, with the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II taking center stage. The monument has also been criticized for its scale and location on the revered Capitoline Hill. Italians derisively call it “macchina da scrivere” or “torta nuziale.” The English translations are “typewriter” and “wedding cake.”

Piazza Venezia

The Piazza across the street from the “wedding cake” is the next stop. Because it sits at the crossroads of the Via del Corso, the Via dei Fori Imperiali, and the Via Nazionale, Piazza Venezia is a mad scene of honking cars, trucks, and buses almost 24 hours a day. Be very, very cautious crossing the traffic here.

Stop at this important square for a moment and gaze at Palazzo Venezia with its simple second-floor balcony holding an Italian flag.  Imagine people gathering to hear Vittoria Emmaneul II announcing the unification of Italy or people gathering to hear the news of Italy declaring war on the Ottoman Empire or watching Mussolini from the balcony of Palazzo Venezia announce Italy’s entry into World War II. During that war, Mussolini would often address the crowds from this balcony or hold parades and ceremonies in the square.

Around the corner to the left and to the left again is an interior plaza inside the Palazzo.  It’s well worth a stop and rest in its shaded courtyard.

Tickets are available here.

Piazza Navona

Leaving Piazza Venezia at the far end away from the “wedding cake,” make a left and follow Via del Plebiscito for about a half mile, staying slightly to the right.  You will see signs pointing toward Piazza Navona, but if not, make a right near the Museum of Rome on a pedestrian thruway, Via della Cuccagna in front of San Pantaleo church. A short walk north is Piazza Navona, considered the heart of Rome for its people-watching, cafes, and lively street entertainment.  It’s the Italian version of Times Square or Piccadilly Circus but much more tasteful and relaxed.

Piazza Navona is a feast for the eyes with its Baroque buildings and fountains. Sculpture by the renowned Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Fontana dei Fiumi (the Fountain of the Four Rivers) is particularly impressive with its towering obelisk and statues representing the four major rivers of the world: the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges, and the Río de la Plata.

This is the perfect time for lunch at one of the many outdoor cafes, sip an aperitivo, or grab a gelato to soak up the atmosphere of this lively and vibrant square.

An underground  tour  of the ruins of the Stadium of Domitian, the former site of the ancient Olympic Games is available at the Piazza.

Having walked 2.5 miles from Circus Maximus to Piazza Navona, you’ve reached the halfway point of this walking tour.

With a bite to eat digested, time to move farther into the city center. Exit to the right of Bernini’s fountain via Corsia Anola, make a left, and then a quick right on Via del Salvatore, and follow the crowds to the Piazza della Rotonda. Here is the Pantheon, one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings. It was originally built as a temple to all the Roman gods in the 1st century, and it has been in continuous use ever since.

When it was destroyed by fire, Emperor Hadrian reconstructed the Pantheon in 126-128. With its columns, pediment, and massive concrete dome, it has inspired architects for almost 2000 years including the Pantheon in Paris, the U.S. Capitol, and numerous capitol buildings in America.

The interior of the Pantheon is even more impressive with the dome of the rotunda pierced by a central oculus, the only source of natural light.

Up until the summer of 2023, entry was free. Now, a ticket is now required (5 euros) which can be purchased here . A more in-depth tour is offered here .

SheBuysTravel Tip:  The new ticketing system has caused much confusion and consternation especially because the site was free to visit for almost 2000 years!  If this is a must-see site, then before you arrive, splurge on a skip-the-line ticket from Viator   or GetYourGuide .

Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain)

Turning your back on the Pantheon , exit the Piazza della Rotonda at the far northern end, and on the right by the Hotel Pantheon, you will find a narrow street, Via del Pastini. Walk six long blocks following other tourists on a pilgrimage to the site most memorialized in cinema – the Fontana di Trevi.

American films Three Coins in a Fountain and Roman Holiday  introduced many Americans for the first time to an old Roman tradition. It is said that if you toss a coin into the fountain, you will return to Rome one day. For a more dramatic and even more iconic moment in all of cinema, marvel at the scene from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita when two lovers, Anita Ekberg, and Marcello Mastroianni, walk through the empty streets late at night and meet in the middle of the fountain for a romantic moment with a surprising end.

Despite what you’ve seen in photos, the Trevi Fountain is in a relatively small piazza overwhelmed by the size and grandeur of the fountain. The fountain is over 80 feet tall and 160 feet wide with Oceanus, the god of the sea, overseeing the tritons, horses, and shells that Pietro Bracci and Nicola Salvi sculpted.

For the curious, take an underground group tour  to see the remains of the aqueduct under the fountain.

Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps)

Exit the Piazza di Trevi on the far right along Via del Lavatore and walk four long blocks to a plaza where you’ll turn left on Via del Traforo. Continue straight on this road which turns into Via dei Due Macelli and arrive with thousands of tourists at the Piazza di Spagna looking up 135 steps to the Trinita dei Monti church.

The name relates to its origin when a French diplomat funded the stair to connect the church, then under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, to the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See in the Palazzo Monaldeschi at the bottom of the steps.  The steps are made of white travertine marble and are decorated with a variety of sculptures and fountains interspersed with a vibrant flowering garden. The central fountain at the bottom of the steps is known as the Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Longboat).

As there are still two miles ahead on the tour, no time to climb the steps.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  While certainly people will be sitting on the steps, be aware that a new city ordinance gives police the authority to fine people 250 euros for sitting on the steps and 400 euros for damaging them or dirtying them which includes eating food.

Castel Sant’ Angelo

Take the main road, Via Dei Condotti, away from the steps for about half a mile toward the Tiber River, making sure to continue to the splendid Ponte Umberto I that crosses the river. The travertine bridge was dedicated to Umberto I, King of Italy, who inaugurated the bridge together with his consort Margherita of Savoy.

Looming on the other side of the river is Castel Sant’Angelo , a former papal fortress built in the 2nd century, which was also used as a prison and papal residence over the centuries. As one might hope to see, the castle is surrounded by a moat and is accessible by a bridge.

Although today the Castel is not part of the Vatican City, there is still an underground passage that was built in the 13th century connecting it to St. Peter’s. The passageway was used by several popes over the centuries, including Pope Clement VII in 1527 during the Sack of Rome. Clement VII was able to escape to Castel Sant’Angelo while the city was being looted and pillaged. Click here for tour information.

Piazza San Pietro (St. Peter’s Square)

Crossing the bridge and staying to the left, in the distance one can see St. Peter’s Basilica. Follow the wide Via della Conciliazione to enter the Vatican City–the smallest country in the world with just over 100 acres and a population of about 800 people. Vatican City has its own constitution, government, currency, postal service, police force, and military (the colorful Swiss Guard).

For Catholics, this is the most sacred site in their religion and arguably the most beautiful public space in all of Europe, maybe the world.

The square is designed in the Baroque style, characterized by its grand scale, use of geometrical shapes, and lavish ornamentation. With nearly 300 columns and statues, the colonnade is designed with the idea that the Mother Church is embracing its followers in her arms. For a more practical purpose, Pope Alexander VII directed Bernini to design it so the greatest number of people could see the Pope give his blessing, either from the middle of the façade of the church or from a window in the Vatican Palace (to the right when facing the basilica).  At the center of the square is an Egyptian obelisk, brought here from Egypt in the 1st century – one of the oldest obelisks in the world.

Be prepared to go through two security lines to enter the Piazza.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  Papal Masses are typically held on Sundays and holidays, while Papal Audiences are held on Wednesdays. Both events are free and open to the public, but tickets are required for Papal Audiences.

Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano (St. Peter’s Basilica)

The final stop on the one-day tour is the domed building that dominates the city’s skyline – St. Peter Basilica.  Designed by four architects, including Bernini and Michelangelo, the Basilica is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world. Walk inside and gaze up. It’s more like a city than a church. One can imagine Romans meeting here for religious and social purposes throughout the centuries since it opened in 1626.

Highlights of St. Peter’s

There are three must-stops on a tour of St. Peter’s.  First, after walking in on the right, there will be a crowd lined up to see Michelangelo’s Pieta, a marble sculpture that depicts the moment Jesus is taken down from the cross and lays in the arms of Mary. This is one of the most famous works of art in the world and requires no admission fee, only patience to stand in front of it.

Towards the center of the church is the bronze statue of St. Peter, dating back to the 5th century. There will be another line here for people to pray to the Apostle and kiss or touch the right foot of the statue.

Dominating the center of the church is St. Peter’s Baldachin , a large Baroque sculpted bronze canopy over the high altar designed by Bernini. Catholic tradition holds that the basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter, chief among Jesus’s apostles and essentially the first pope. Saint Peter’s tomb is supposedly directly below the altar as well as the burial crypt of 91 popes including Pope Benedict XVI who died in January of this year. There is a fee of 13 euros to enter the crypt at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The basilica is free to enter and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer. Times vary in the winter. The church may be closed if an outdoor event or mass is being held.  The Dome is accessible and offers a fantastic view of Rome. The cost is 8 euros if you take the elevator part-way or 6 euros if you are willing to climb the 551 steps to the top. Basic information from the Vatican about visiting St. Peter’s is here . You can combine a trip to the dome with a guided tour of the church .

SheBuysTravel Tip:  The Vatican Museums with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and Raphael’s fresco are separate from St. Peter’s and require admission. Typically, the wait in line to enter lasts several hours.

Are tours in Rome worth it?

Sean Finelli Last Updated: June 19, 2023

Rome has been one of the world’s most desirable destinations for over 2,000 years and counting. Much of its allure is due to its many layers, which can be peeled back like a beautiful rose. With so much to explore, you might ask: Is it worth it to take tours in Rome or should I try to explore it on my own? Read on to find out.

Pro Tip:  Bookmarks are the key to organizing a great trip. Bookmark this post in a “Rome” folder in your browser. This way you can circle back to it when you’re traveling. Also, check out our dedicated guide to planning your visit to Rome , which has everything you’ll need, and our top-rated Rome tours .

Are Rome Tours Worth It?

Short answer: Yes! Going on tours in Rome is definitely worth it. It’s also totally possible to explore on your own. Let’s explore why…

We looked at our customer travel trends and were blown away by the results. We found that 27.3% of trans-Atlantic travelers going to Rome for the first time come back to Rome within 5 years! And 43.9% of our European customers going to Rome for the first time also return within 5 years. Why?

Rome has food, culture, history, charm, and lots to do! People want to go back and experience all that the Eternal City has to offer. Then again, maybe it’s just that they fell in love with Rome’s iconic sites.

How do we know this? Our return travelers often re-book the same tours on their second trip since they loved the guided experience the first time and want to re-live it or share it with others.

So, should you book tours or explore on your own?

Definitely do both. The advantage of small group tours is that you get access to these sites earlier in the morning when it’s cooler. Then, you have free time to eat a delicious Roman pizza or trapizzino and explore the streets of this ancient city as the evening rolls into night.

Exploring on your own and getting lost is great but should be done by design as not all areas of Rome are equal. Consider reading through our online guidebook for Rome to ensure you find great restaurants, free things to do, and attractions to visit.

What Are the Most Popular Tours in Rome?

rome tour 3000

So what do people want to do in Rome the most? We ran a poll on our Instagram @thetourguy and asked that question to over 200 people and here’s what they picked.

The results are in and—no surprise—people go to Rome to eat pasta above all else! That said, seeing history is a close second and it makes a lot of sense since the city has been inhabited for 3,000 years. Think: cobblestones, catacombs, and Colosseum.

Today’s city is filled with many of the very same monuments that you would have seen in Rome when Jesus Christ was alive. This incredible step back in time is very much the reason why people come to Rome over and over—and food is an amazing bonus.

The Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica

rome tour 3000

The Vatican is the most visited monument in Rome and the fourth-most visited museum on Earth according to Statista.com. It usually has more than 6 million visitors each year. That means lots of crowds to plan around, and the best way is to skip the line with a tour guide. Plus they’ll help you navigate the best areas of the 9 miles of exhibits to save your feet!

The museum is full of electrifying masterpieces by the likes of da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, and even ancient works that are 2,000 years old! Vatican tours are our most popular tour in Europe and widely recommended by travelers as you’ll see from the reviews.

On my first visit to the Vatican, I did not take a tour and I remember speeding through rooms on a mad dash to see the Sistine Chapel . A few years later, on my second visit, I took a tour and realized I was walking by works from Italian masters like Raphael!

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our  best Vatican tours to take and why.

The Colosseum

rome tour 3000

The Colosseum comes in at a close second after the Vatican. This ancient amphitheater normally receives over six million visitors per year. It is an incredible monument and the symbol of Rome. Visitors also gain access to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum when visiting the Colosseum but you can read more about that in our how to visit articles .

There is a lot of misinformation surrounding this incredible monument so taking a tour is mission critical. Guides make it a lot better and we run small groups which average between 14 and 15 people. Definitely check out our Colosseum tours for more.

Food tours hit the scene in Rome as far back as 2010 and we’ve been running them since 2013. In fact, if a Rome food tour is on your list, then we have the perfect option: A walking food tour with a sit-down dinner in trendy Trastevere . Need we say more?

Ok, we will. Why not also look at a pasta-making class so you can channel your inner Italian chef and wow your friends and family when you go home? Food in Italy is second-to-none and you can learn why on that and any of our other food tours.

Day Trips To Pompeii

SGT DT Pompeii from Rome

Ok, we know that Pompeii is not in Rome, but this famous city is a huge draw for anyone visiting the Eternal City. We have a Pompeii from Rome day trip with a stop in Sorrento that gives you the perfect chance to explore Pompeii (with a guide) and Sorrento (on your own).

It is definitely a long day, but you likely won’t have a car in Rome, and there isn’t much in the way of trains in southern Italy. So make it easy on yourself and let us take care of the details while you sit back and enjoy your day trip.

If you want a more private experience, we also created small group and private tours to Pompeii from Rome. For more inspiration, read more on Pompeii to plan your trip.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a Pompeii day trip from Rome is worth it .

Rome Catacombs

Rome Catacombs

A trip to Rome really ought to include a visit to the early burial sites of the Eternal City. They’re intentionally placed outside the city along the famous Appian Way that still has original carriage wheel ruts in the street.

There are lots of catacombs and crypts that hold the bones of tens of thousands of Christians, popes, and others. Our tour visits the St. Callixtus catacombs and the Capuchin Crypts. The crypts are where you’ll see ornamental displays of bones and skeletons.

So is it worth booking a tour? Well, the catacombs aren’t in the center of Rome, which means they’re tricky to get to. Leaving the logistics to a tour guide makes for an easy and informative experience in these eerie sites of ancient Rome. You can book a day or night tour of the catacombs, whichever is best for your schedule.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out how to visit the Rome Catacombs .

Borghese Gallery

rome tour 3000

If you’ve been to Rome before, or you have an extra afternoon here, why not head to a super amazing museum that almost never has crowds? The Borghese Gallery or Galleria Borghese is one of Rome’s premier museums and a personal favorite. The gallery is small but also only lets in a few hundred visitors for 2-hour time slots which makes it a fan favorite.

Beyond that, the gallery is—pound for pound—one of the greatest collections on Earth. It is highlighted by some of Bernini’s most incredible sculptures including Apollo and Daphne . Sound familiar? Bernini also made the one-of-a-kind Baldacchino at St. Peter’s Basilica! Oh, and he designed St. Peter’s Square.

While the gallery may or may not be a must-visit for your first trip to Rome, it is definitely a museum you’ll want to visit with a guide. We have a great private Borghese Gallery tour that is time tested and beloved by customers.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out how to visit the Borghese Gallery .

Tuk Tuk Sightseeing Tour

rome tour 3000

Rome is a walkable city, but you’re going to need lots of water and stamina, plus some great walking shoes. Why not make it easier by letting our friendly, local tuk tuk driver zoom you through the city? It’s the fastest (and most comfortable) way to see Rome’s megamonuments—and everything in between—in a couple hours.

The tuk tuk is an electric vehicle so you can also have peace of mind if you’re conscientious about green tourism. But we think you’ll just love riding with your private group and your friendly driver who loves to talk about Rome and all her hidden treasures.

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our  Rome Guide for more info.

Barberini Gallery

rome tour 3000

If the Borghese Gallery is crowned by sculptures, the Barberini is its sister museum for paintings. Inside you’ll find one of Raphael’s most famous works of art which is La Fornarina . La Fornarina depicts a baker’s daughter who posed for Raphael on a few occasions.

Raphael was well known for never sleeping alone and rarely with the same woman. Nevertheless, Margarita Luti is often recognized as the woman who stole his heart. Be sure to check out our private Barberini Gallery tour if you are visiting Rome on your second trip.

Palazzo Altemps and Navona

rome tour 3000

Palazzo Altemps is one of my favorite and most personal galleries in Rome. It is a quiet escape from Rome and a beautiful collection of antiquities. Like most Roman galleries, this museum is the former home of a noble Roman family.

The Ludovico family were the final owners of this palace, which they eventually gifted it to the city of Rome. It was later converted into the museum you see today. The main event of the gallery is the cloister (featured right), the Ludovico Battle Sarcophagus, and the Suicidal Gaul.

This is a great gallery to explore on your own if you read up on it. You can also visit with a guide and see a few other nearby monuments. Our tour of Palazzo Altemps includes a deep exploration underneath Piazza Navona to the former Stadium of Domitian.

Yes, there is an ancient stadium under Piazza Navona. Don’t miss it!

The Essential Itinerary for a Perfect 5 Days in Rome

No city in the world merges the ancient with the modern quite like rome does. .

With thousands of years of history under its belt, a whole lifetime wouldn’t be enough to explore every cobblestone, church, bridge, garden and ancient palazzo of Italy’s capital. But by spending five days in Rome, you can get a pretty good feel for our sensational city.

Get ready to be struck by the beauty and elegance—and at times, chaos—of Rome, and discover what it really means to live la dolce vita .

Here's a perfect itinerary for 5 days in Rome!

Day 1: Discover Ancient Rome

On the first of your five days in Rome, get ready to dive deep into its roots.

There’s no better way to get a feeling of the Eternal City’s evolution than by starting with Ancient Rome. This means visiting the historic center—and yes, the Colosseum should definitely be on your list. Avoid long lines at the entrance by purchasing your tickets online or taking a guided tour , but keep in mind that even with skip-the-line tickets you’ll have to go through security checks.

Start your journey at Piazza Venezia , walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali and gaze at the stunning Roman Forum, Colosseum and Palatine Hill. Tickets to the Colosseum include access to all three sights.

Part of responsible tourism in Rome is planning your visit to famous monuments during off-peak hours to avoid crowding.

After you’ve seen this part of Rome, it’s time for a little break. Head to the stunning Monti neighborhood nestled in between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. Here, you can stop for a quick sandwich at Zia Rosetta if you’re tight on time, or have a proper sit-down lunch at either La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali or Barzilai Bistrot .

After lunch, spend time exploring the beautiful streets of Monti, from Piazza della Madonna dei Monti to Via dei Serpenti and Via Panisperna, enjoying panoramic views of the Colosseum along the way.

Once you’ve taken in the views, head on over to Complesso del Vittoriano to check out whichever fascinating exhibition is currently installed. End your first day in Rome with a fantastic aperitivo and a well-deserved hearty dinner.

Vitti is one of our top picks for where to eat in Rome in August for the Aperol spritzes alone.

Day 2: Explore the Famous Piazzas

Spend your second day in Rome discovering the iconic piazzas that dot every corner of the Eternal City.

Start your itinerary at Piazza del Popolo. This is the starting point of the “ Trident ,” the three elegant shopping streets that reach toward Piazza Venezia.

To the left, you’ll find the haute couture heaven that is Via del Babuino, lined with high fashion boutiques and leading straight to Piazza di Spagna and the famous Spanish Steps. In the center of the Trident is the mainstream shopping street Via del Corso, and on the right is Via di Ripetta.

This is clearly a great area to shop till you drop, but instead of walking along the Trident, head left and walk up to the Villa Borghese Gardens, right onto the Pincio Terrace . Stop here for a moment (or several) and enjoy the amazing view of Rome at your feet.

Keep walking straight along the tree-dotted avenue and stop by Villa Medici , home to the French Academy of Rome. Exhibitions, stunning gardens and art await you here.

Don't forget to visit the gardens of the Villa Medici during your five days in Rome.

After this local gem, keep walking till you reach the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti , a beautiful Renaissance-style church that dominates Piazza di Spagna from above. This is where you can walk down the famous Spanish Steps and reach the piazza itself. Once you’ve taken a few pictures, walk along Via dei Condotti, the famous high fashion street with the flagship stores of Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton (just to name a few).

Hungry for lunch? Ginger Sapori e Salute is a great option (especially if you want some healthy food). Once you’ve taken care of the check, head to Piazza di Pietra, a stunning square that’s home to the ruins of the Hadrianeum, a temple built in honor of the Emperor Hadrian.

From here, walk towards Piazza della Rotonda, dominated by the jaw-dropping Pantheon. Step inside this “temple of all Gods” and take a moment to admire everything from the majestic ceiling to the tombs of Italy’s kings.

Head back to Via del Corso and explore the incredible Galleria Doria Pamphilj to end your sightseeing for the day before heading to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Rome .

Da Cesare is one of our favorite picks for where to eat in Rome in August. They serve up some of the best pasta all'amatriciana in town!

Day 3: Dive Into the Roman Food Scene

Fellow foodies, this is your moment!

Today you’ll get to visit some more of the most beautiful piazzas in Rome and discover the wonderful world of Roman cuisine along the way.

Start your day at the famous Piazza Navona, stopping to admire the three famous fountains by Bernini. The church of Sant’Agnese in Agone , designed by Bernini’s arch rival Borromini, is well worth a visit as well.

After you’ve strolled away, head to Piazza Campo de’ Fiori, where the famous open-air food market awaits you. Stroll through its stands, buy some fresh produce and then walk past Piazza Farnese onto Via Giulia until you cross the Ponte Sisto bridge. This pedestrian-only bridge will lead you straight into the charming Trastevere neighborhood.

5 days in Rome would be incomplete without a wander through Trastevere.

Trastevere is where you should stop for a Roman lunch. Populated by yummy trattorias (no-frills family-run restaurants), Trastevere is where you can get a taste of some of the best carbonaras and amatricianas of Rome.

After lunch, walk some more through the beautiful neighborhood, making your way to the Fontana di Acquapaola and the Gianicolo for some stunning views of Rome. From here, it’s just a quick and easy walk back across the river to Testaccio , a charming local neighborhood that’s perfect for dinner.

Day 4: Discover Vatican City & the Historic Center

Spend the fourth of your five days in Rome discovering the country within a country: Vatican City!

No trip to Rome is complete without a visit to the amazing Vatican Museums. It’s here where you’ll find the Sistine Chapel , Michelangelo’s masterpiece that attracts millions of visitors each year, and perhaps the world’s symbol of Catholicism: St. Peter’s Basilica .

Don’t forget to purchase your tickets online ahead of time, or else prepare for hour-long lines (and who likes those?). After taking in the artistic and architectural masterpieces of Vatican City, stop for lunch in the charming Borgo Pio neighborhood nearby.

Insider Tip : Our friends at Walks offer a fantastic early-morning experience at the Vatican, including access to the Sistine Chapel an hour before it opens to the public!

Some of the best breakfast in Rome comes from Gran Caffe, just around the corner from the Vatican.

After lunch, walk past Castel Sant’Angelo, cross the bridge and explore the historic center. Here, be sure to stop inside the hidden gem of a museum that is Palazzo Altemps . With its stunning frescoes, gorgeous courtyard and fascinating artwork and sculptures, it’s crazy to believe that you’ll practically have the whole place to yourself!

Just a stone’s throw away, you’ll find Via del Governo Vecchio, the perfect place for some vintage shopping . When you’re ready for a little pick-me-up, head down the street, cross the bridge again and find a spot in the Prati neighborhood for an aperitivo!

Day 5: Admire Bernini’s Artwork

Yup, we’re already on your fifth day in Rome! Spend your last day in the Eternal City visiting the surreal Borghese Gallery , an art gallery that houses Renaissance sculptures and paintings, including Bernini’s world-famous works “The Rape of Proserpina” and “Apollo and Daphne.”

Buy tickets in advance—reservations are necessary to enter! After your visit of the Borghese Gallery, explore the beautiful Villa Borghese Gardens, once owned by the powerful family of the same name.

Stroll through the gardens and head to Via Veneto , once the heart of the famous Dolce Vita movement. Stop by one of the restaurants here for a lunch break, and afterwards walk to Piazza Barberini, with Bernini’s Fountain of the Tritone at its center.

Walk along Via del Tritone and head to the Trevi Fountain. Finally, with your back facing the fountain, toss in a coin and make a wish. They say that anyone who throws a coin into the fountain is destined to come back to Rome!

How to Spend 3 Days in Rome – the Best Travel Itinerary 2023

You are about to spend 3 days in Rome in one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the entire world? Congratulations, there’s no way you won’t enjoy it!

And let me tell you something, I envy you a lot! Rome is my favorite city! It’s a risky statement to call a place favorite when there are so many stunning sites around the world, but…yeah… Rome is my favorite city!

The City of the Seven Hills , The Eternal City, or The City of Love , no matter what you call it you already know the road will take you there someday ( you know where all roads lead to, right? ). If this day is the first out of at least three, you may have enough time to taste the ancient ingredients and the renaissance flavor of Rome.

Enough with the cliches, let’s get down to business. To take full advantage of my 3 days in Rome itinerary guide, I recommend arriving there as early as possible ( or the night before ) and have three full days before you leave. The city is stuffed with things to see and do and it’s impossible to check them all in such a small timeframe, but with good time management and some comfortable shoes, you can see enough to fell in love .

Three Days in Rome Itinerary – Day One –   City Stroll

3 days in rome - city of rome

In the first out of our 3 days in Rome, the aim will be to get comfortable with this pastel-colored city and feel what Rome is all about. After breakfast and cappuccino in any of the local cafes we start our day with:

Piazza Navona

3 days in rome - piaza navona

A public place since the 15th century, the plaza is most famous for its three fountains – Fontana del Moro, Fountain of Neptun, and the biggest one – The Fountain of Four Rivers by Bernini . It’s also home to various street performers and vendors.

Don’t get breakfast there though. As tempting as it is, to have your coffee with some pastry in front of the naked roman gods, the price would be at least double the normal .

The Roman Pantheon

3 days in rome pantheon

A short walk from the piazza you will find the most preserved ancient building in Rome – the Pantheon. Built between A.D 118 and 125 as a temple to the gods, the Pantheon was converted into a catholic church in 609 and still serves as one today. It’s also a mausoleum of famous Italian people such as the first Italian King – Vittorio Emanuele II, and Raphael. There is a catholic mass every Sunday and even weddings from time to time.

The inscription: “M. AGRIPPA.L.F.COSTERTIUM.FECIT” is basically an ancient copyright statement meaning: “Marcus Agrippa son of Lucius, having been consul three times made it”.

Working Hours: Monday – Saturday: 8:30 AM – 7:30 PM Sunday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM Prices: Regular – 5 EUR

Trevi Fountain

3 days in Rome itinerary day 1 - The Trevi Fountain

Close to the Pantheon, you will find Trevi Fountain – a serious rival of the Colosseum as a main symbol of Rome. Finished in 1762, Trevi is not only the largest baroque fountain in the city but also the most beautiful fountain in the world! Originally it was said you have to drink a glass of its waters in order to come back to Rome.

Thankfully the legend evolved and now says: you should stand with your back to Trevi and toss a coin over your left shoulder ( i threw two just in case ) to ensure your return to the Eternal City. Turned out throwing two coins means you’ll fall in love with a Roman girl. Haven’t happened yet, but who knows…

It’s closed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM for coin removal. Do you want to know how much they get out of it? It’s close to 3000 euro (!) per day and it’s all donated to the needy.

Spanish Steps

spanish steps

These 18th century steps are a great place to stop, relax a little bit and eat a slice of pizza or gelato. Why are they called The Spanish Steps, tnough?

The stairway was built in 1725 to connect the Spanish embassy with the Trinità dei Monti church. At the base of the steps is Piazza de Spagna and Fontana della Barcaccia (“Fountain of the Ugly Boat”), built by Pietro Bernini (the father of the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini)

Villa Borghese gardens and Galleria Borghese

villa-borghese

Behind the Spanish Steps is the third largest and most picturesque park in Rome. Villa Borghese is a landscape garden that contains a number of buildings, museums, and even a zoo. The most famous museum there is Galleria Borghese. It’s an art museum featuring masterpieces of many Italian artists, most notable being Raphael and Bernini. Since it’s not a big place, they only allow a fixed amount of people inside, and pre-booking is mandatory. You can buy tickets here , or schedule a guided tour here.

If you plan to use a Roma Pass / Omnia Card, you have to book your entry hour by the phone ( +39 06 32810 ).

Sunset at Pincio

pincio hill silhouettes at sunset

Finish your first out of 3 days in Rome with a stunning sunset on top of Pinicio Hill. It’s on the west side of the Borghese gardens and it’s one of the most romantic places in the world to enjoy a sunset. The whole experience is complemented by local musicians playing catchy Italian jingles and all-time classic ballads.

“Rome is the city of echoes, the city of illusions, and the city of yearning.”

Three Days in Rome Itinerary -Day Two – Ancient Marvels

In the middle of our 3 days in Rome adventure, we will continue touring the biggest highlights of the city. First thing in the morning, we start with the one thing in Italy that’s probably more famous than the Colosseum itself:

pizza sliced at 8 pieces

Begin the day with a tour of Rome’s best foodie neighborhoods and taste 18 different roman specialties. Led by a local guide you’ll start with a cappuccino and handmade Cannolo .

After breakfast, your guide will take you to the oldest market of Rome where you’ll get to know the ancient food heritage of the city, talk to some Italian chefs and taste various samples of traditional Italian foods ( the baccalà fritto is out of this world ).

The end of the tour would be in the best pizzeria in the world ( as per Anthony Bourdain ). Oh, and there is a wine tasting too! You can book this incredible food tour here. If you prefer a more premium food experience, this tour gives you the chance to explore the tastiest hidden gem area in Rome – Testaccio. And if you just want to taste the local street food, this small-group experience will take you around the famous jewish quarter to let you taste some Supplì (fried mozzarella rice balls), carciofi alla giudìa (deep-fried artichokes) and other typical Roman seasonal dishes

Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

3 days in Rome itinerary day 2 - The Roman Forum

Time to get to the big guys now – the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. They are both situated next to each other and you can visit them both with the same ticket ( as long as you visit on the same day ).

Why do we start with the forum and not the Colosseum? Because of the entry lines. Everybody starts from the Colosseum so the line for the tickets is quite long. The line for the forum, on the other hand, is not even close to that and if you use one of the side entries ( go down the street behind the Arc of Constantine – “Via di San Gregorio and it’s after the bus stop, to your right ) you may get tickets without waiting in a line at all!

The Forum itself is a vast area with ancient ruins of a marketplace, few temples, and political buildings. It is the place ancient Romans used for triumphal processions, public speeches, and even gladiatorial matches. The Forum is a must-see and the fact it shares the same ticket with the Colosseum makes it inexcusable to miss it even if your time is limited.

The Colosseum

3 days in Rome itinerary day 2 - The Colosseum sunrise

Here it is – the eternal landmark, the symbol of ancient and modern Rome. The Colosseum!

The ancient amphitheater was used mainly for gladiator battles but also for animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and even sea-fight mock-ups! The spectacles often gather more than 80,000 people ( the capacity of the biggest stadium in Rome nowadays, Olimpico, is 72,698 ) and they were divided ( of course ) by class.

The first tier, called the Podium, was reserved for the Imperator and senators ( the VIP area ), the second tier was for the noble class – equites and knights. And the worst seats were for the common folk. It’s good to see how much humankind has progressed since those barbaric years and how equal we are now ( yeah, sure ).

Working Hours : Last Sunday in October until 15 February 8:30 AM -4:30 PM 16 February to 15 March 8:30 AM – 5 PM March 16 to the last Saturday of March 8:30 AM -5:30 PM Last Sunday in March to August 8:30 AM -7:15 PM 1st to 30th September 9:30 AM -7 PM October 1 to last Saturday in October 8:30 AM-6:30 PM

Prices: Regular: 16.00 EUR (+ 2 EUR if you book it online) Priority (fast track entrance): 22.00 EUR Reduced: 2.00 EUR (EU citizens between 18 and 25 years old) Free: EU and non-EU citizens under 18

Important! Since 01.01.2019, the Colosseum has a limit of 3,000 people at the same time making the timeslot online ticket mandatory.

Premium experiences: The normal Colosseum visit does not include stepping down on the arena or going to the top of the stands. If you really want to see where gladiators and beasts waited for their doom, see the restricted top seats or walk around the arena, you need this premium tour . If you’re after a serene experience or you’re chasing the perfect photo, the best option would be the early access tour . You skip all lines, there are hardly any other people and as a bonus, you miss the infamous Roman midday heat. Another serene VIP experience is the night tour .

The Orange Gardens and the most beautiful view in Rome

orange gardens

End the long day in Giardino Degli Aranci. A walking distance from the Colosseum it’s considered to be one of the most romantic places in The City of Love . The gardens are located on the idyllic Aventine Hill but before we enter, there is another place to check.

Once on Via di Santa Sabina go past the gardens to the end of the street. There you’ll notice a queue in front of a green door. People are not waiting for the door to open though, they are waiting for a look through the famous Aventine keyhole – an Italian bucket list experience that is known to offer the most beautiful view in Rome.

aventine-keyhole-in-rome

After that, go back to the orange gardens and enjoy the sunset while tasting a freshly picked orange.

Working Hours: October to February 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM March and September: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM From April to August: 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM

“Rome was a poem pressed into service as a city.”

Three Days in Rome Itinerary – Day Three – The Holly City

It’s the last of our 3 days in Rome, and it’s time to get out of the country and check the home of the Catholic religion – Vatican City.

St. Peter’s Basilica

3 days in Rome itinerary day 3 - The Basilica of St.Peter

Get early and be on St. Peter’s Square at 7:00 AM. There shouldn’t be many people there yet, so you can marvel at the white city at peace. Get in line ( if there is even a line that early ) and go into the largest and most famous church of all churches – St.Peter’s Basilica.

st peter basilica

Designed by Bramante, Michelangelo, and Bernini, the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture is one of the holiest Catholic shrines. All popes are buried here including the first one – St. Peter himself!

If you want to go to the top of the dome you better do it before you enter the church. It’s a different entrance to the right and there’s a line with an entrance fee. The whole climb is 551 steps of various forms and sizes but if you pay a little extra, you can take an elevator for the first 320. The view from the top is heart-stopping and I strongly recommend to push yourself and check it out.

st.Peter's square from the top of the basilica

Important! When you plan your Vatican visit, make sure it’s not on Wednesday or Sunday. The Pope has open masses on those days and you will have to wait for him to finish (at least 4 hours) before you are allowed to enter the basilica They have a strongly enforced dress code in Vatican city. Avoid tank tops or shorts or bring a scarf/shawl to cover yourself.

Working Hours: October – March: 7:00 AM – 6:30 PM April – September: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Prices:   St.Peter Basilica – free. Climbing to the dome: 8 EUR on foot (551 steps) ; 10 EUR with the elevator (stil has a 320 steps climb).

Premium experience: If you want to experience the most significant basilica in the Christian world in the best way possible, this premium guided tour is the thing you need. You’d see everything from top to bottom, including the famous panoramic view from the dome, the the historic grottoes, St. Peter’s tomb and of course, you’ll skip all the lines and learn tons of new things.

Vatican Museums

vatican museums

Here’s a little info about me – I love museums! Everywhere I go I try to visit at least one. The Vatican Museums are the 5th largest museum in the world with more than a 43.000m2 gallery space and it’s my favorite museum in the world ( again with this favorite thing… ).

3 days in rome itinerary-vatican stairs

Make sure you got your ticket online thus skipping the enormous line and prepare yourself for 7km (4.3mi) travel through time. It starts with all the things Romans stole from Egypt ( there is a real mummy ) goes through various Roman epochs, shows you formal papal residences – designed and painted by Raphael ( the painter, not the ninja turtle ), and ends up in the magical Sistine Chapel.

The Sistine Chapel is one of those places impossible to describe. From the moment you set foot inside, the whole place starts bombarding you with energy. I spent an hour and a half listening to every word my audioguide had to say ( twice ) and when I got out it felt like walking out of a dream. Absolutely out-of-this-world experience!

sistine-chapel-ceiling-frescoes

Working Hours: Monday to Saturday 9.00 AM – 6.00 PM (final entry 4.00 PM)

Every last Sunday of the month – Free entry (provided this does not coincide with Easter Sunday, 29 June Sts. Peter and Paul, 25 December Christmas Day, and 26 December Feast of St. Stephen) Check out all opening hours on the official website

Prices: Adults – 17 EUR – get one here . Adolescents (6-18 years) – 8 EUR Students (under 25) – 8 EUR Children (under 6) – Free A guided tour can be booked here , but what I’d strongly recommend the night tour . Vatican museums are amazing but there are waaay too many people during the day (yes even in the pandemic times). Premium Experience: This is my favorite experience in Rome. Really, I’m in love with the Sistine Chapel, from the very first time I’ve set my foot inside and got blasted with its energy, this is one of my favorite man-made places anywhere in the world. There’s a big problem there though – it’s always full of people. So many people, it’s hard to concentrate on the amazing surroundings. And here comes the premium experience – an early visit before the Sistine Chapel is overcrowded with people ! If getting up early is not your thing, you can do it at night too ! Yes, it’s possible and it’s my favorite thing in Rome ( tied with the pizza )!

Important! Usually you can get tickets at the door of the museum. Currently the only option, however, is online booking.

Castel Sant’Angelo

3 days in Rome itinerary day 3 - Castel Sant Angelo

Once out of the Vatican, grab a quick lunch and go alongside the Tiber river until you see the bridges and an old castle. Built in 135 AD by emperor Hadrian it was actively used as a defense structure, but it also used to be home to one of the Popes when there was a deadly epidemy in 590 AD.

It’s a lovely museum today where you can see ancient catapults, secret corridors, and the preserved papal residence. The top floor is a balcony displaying a spectacular panoramic view of the city. Perfect for sunset watching or photo hunting ( or both ).

rome city view from the top of castel St.Angelo

Working Hours : Daily from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM.

Prices: Regular: 17.50 EUR Skip the line: Check here

Premium experience: If you’re a Dan Brown fan, this Angels & Demons tour is just the one for you. It will mess up the itinerary, but it’ll take you around a lot of curious places, Castel Sant’Angelo included

More than 3 days in Rome?

You’ve got more than 3 days in Rome? You lucky, you! Ok, here are some extra attractions to check out:

The Capitoline Hill and Museums

capitolini hill sattue of a horseman

One of the seven hills of Rome, The Capitoline Hill (also known as Campidoglio) is situated right between the Forum and the Campus Martius. Been a temple of Jupiter in ancient times, most of the ruins are covered by Renaissance palaces (that house the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza made by non-other but Michelangelo himself!

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? Too many museums and piazzas can easily lead to burnout.

See Also:   What to do in Rome in december

Largo di Torre Argentina

3 days in rome-cat sanctuary

Largo Argentina is a square that houses the ruins of a few temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s most famous about been the place where Julius Caesar was assassinated. The ruins are not that impressive, but it’s curious to know that today they also serve as a cat shelter. Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary is run by a group of volunteers who sterilize stray cats. It even has a small nursing room in one of the temples where the kitties can recover after sterilization!

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? Ruins are not that impressive and not everybody likes cats.

Piazza del Popolo

3 days in rome piazza di popolo

A neoclassical piazza near the Spanish steps, what Popolo is most famous about is the giant Egyptian obelisk in the middle. Brought to Rome more than 2000 years ago, the obelisk of Ramesses II from Heliopolis is the second biggest in the city ( number one is on Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano).

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? It kind of is. You enjoy the panoramic view of the piazza from the top of Pinicio Hill on day one.

Campo de’ Fiori

3 day rome itinerary - camo de fiori

Campo de’ Fiori translated from Italian means field of flowers . While the name comes from Middle Ages when the area was a meadow full of flowers, today the piazza is more of a field of vegetables. Unlike other piazzas in Rome, full of statues and obelisks, this one is home to a daily street market, and it’s the best place to get fresh ingredients for your Italian dish. There is one statue though – of the philosopher Giordano Bruno who was burned alive on the square for his beliefs the earth was round (yeah, the piazza was also used for executions back in the day).

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? If you have only 3 days in Rome, you probably won’t have the time and desire to cook your own meal.

The Complesso Vittoriano

3 days in rome itinerary-vittoriano

The Complesso Vittoriano located on Piazza Venezia is a giant white building that houses an art museum, a military museum, serves as an Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland), and has an excellent (but expensive – 10 EUR) panoramic viewpoint of Rome. The colossal monument was inaugurated in 1911 as a tribute to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of Italy after the country’s unification. Due to its color and design, it’s known as The Wedding Cak e.

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? The viewpoint is expensive, and there was no timeslot open to include an art museum.

3 days in rome itinerary-trastevere

Take a trip across the river Tiber and explore the charming medieval neighborhood of Trastevere. Famous for its restaurants, Trastevere is a bit away from the main Roman attractions making it way less touristy and crowded that the historical center.

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? You need to make a detour from the other attractions to include Trastevere to the itinerary.

Pyramid of Cestius

red-car-in-front-of-a-pyramid

Yes, it’s a real pyramid, and no, it’s not stolen from Egypt (unlike the obelisks). The pyramid was built around 18–12 BC as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a magistrate and high member of the society. While not as impressive as it’s counterparts in Giza, the Pyramid of Cestius still stands 37 meters high, and it certainly is one of the most curious attractions in Rome.

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? It’s too far away from the other attractions.

Santa Maria della Concezione crypt

the-creepy-roman-crypt

This is a creepy one, but if you enjoy such things, it’s easy to add to the first of your 3 days in Rome itinerary. The church of Santa Maria is not like all the others. In 1631, the Capuchin friars made Santa Maria della Concezione their new home and were ordered by the Pope’s brother to bring the remains of the deceased friars along with them, so that all the Capuchin friars might be in one place. Instead of burying the remains of their dead brethren, the Capuchin friars decided to decorate the walls of the crypt with their bones as a reminder that death is always waiting behind the corner.

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? It’s not for everybody.

The Mouth of Truth

rome itinerary-mouth of truth

Bocca della Verità or the Mouth of Truth is a 1300 kg marble mask that stands on the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church. People believed that the mouth of the marble face would close if anyone put his hand in it and tell a lie.

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? It’s a popular photo opportunity in Rome but requires a little detour from the main itinerary.

Baths of Caracalla

rome tour 3000

The Baths of Caracalla used to be one of the greatest and most spectacular thermal complexes in ancient times. Built between 212 and 216 the baths are pretty well preserved nowadays. Another big plus is they are not that popular so you may enjoy the glorified ruins in peace.

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? It’s too far away from the main attractions.

Ostia Antica

Ostia theatre near Rome

Not exactly in Rome but since it’s very close to the biggest Roman airport – Fiumicino, I decided to put it in here. The Ostia Antica s a large archaeological site that is considered to be Rome’s first colony. You can walk over the main street of the ancient town – Decumanus Maximus and enjoy the many well-preserved houses, shops, or even the reconstructed amphitheater.

Why is it not included in the 3 days itinerary? It’s in a galaxy far far away.

Rome Day Tours

The Historical Villa’s One – Enjoy a day exploring two of the finest Renaissance residences in Italy. See the home of the Italian emperor Hadrian that is considered to be the largest and most luxurious residence ever built in Italy. After a (delicious) lunch, continue the tour with a visit to Villa D’Este and its spectacular gardens. The Wine One – Yes, I know. One of the many reasons to select Rome for your vacation is the wine. Same thing here. And while the wine you can find in the Eternal City is more than impressive, why not do the extra step and go to a Tuscany wine cellar where a traditional 3-course gourmet lunch with local wine pairings are waiting for you? The Volcano One – There’s no need to be in Naples to visit the UNESCO recognized site of Pompeii and the infamous Mount Vesuvius . This tour will take you from your hotel, drive you there (in a fully air-conditioned private coach), provide skip-the-line tickets for Pompeii. And to top the experience, you get a lunch in a winery on Mount Vesuvius slopes! How awesome is that?

Some extra information about your 3 days in Rome

When to visit rome.

You can visit Rome at any time of the year but for the best experience, I recommend Spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November). Winters (December -February) are mild but still cold enough to discourage you from exploring the city on foot. Summer (June – August) on the other hand, is extremely hot and also the most active tourist season so it’s better to be avoided.

Where to stay in Rome?

Those are my favorite hotels in Rome. They are not the most glamorous and luxurious but they have the X factor that’s a vital component of the perfect vacation experience:

Colosseum Palace Star

where to stay in rome- the colosseum hotel

This hotel will give you the once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the Colosseum from your window. Some rooms even offer a Colosseum view from the bathroom. Imagine taking a shower while watching the old beauty. Did I mentioned I love Rome? Check the prices

Maison Degli Artisti

where to stay in rome-maison-degli-artisti

This boutique hotel offers a great location (right next to the Spanish Steps) with a modern art interior. You also have a balcony where you observe the Roman lifestyle buzzing underneath you. If you decide to get this one, I recommend getting the piano room. Check the latest prices

Rhea Silvia Luxury Navona

where to stay in rome- navona91 hotel

This small hotel is located on another Roman classic – Piazza Navona. If you want to see some classical fountains from your window and to be minutes away from the Parthenon and Castel Sant’Angelo, this is the place for you. Check the latest prices

Transportation in Rome?

Transportation from the airport can be done by shuttle (from/to Ciampino airport and from/to Fiumicino airport ) or a taxi (48 EUR fixed). You can also talk with your hotel/BnB host and check if he can meet you at the airport. The ride to the city center (near Termini station) is around an hour from both roman airports. For transportation around the city, I suggest to put on your most comfortable shoes and walk around the winding cobblestoned alleys, absorbing the smell of basil and wine. If walking is not your thing, however, you can use public transportation. The ticket (known as B.I.T) costs 1.50 EUR and it’s good for 100 minutes of travel since activating ( putting it in a machine on the bus or using the entry barrier of the metro). Bear in mind you can’t use it twice for the metro but you can use it for a metro + bus combo. You can find the tickets at all metro stations, convenience stores, and newsagents.

If that seems like too much hassle, The easiest way to travel around Madrid would be to rent a car. I recommend checking out  Discover Cars  and their tool that will compare all the best rent-a-car providers in the area. The prices they manage to find are sometimes ridiculously low.

Is Rome safe?

All the major attractions are guarded by heavily armed carabiners so you’ll feel safe all the time. While Rome is one of the safer cities in the world, you are always just a moment of bad luck away from a disaster. From a twisted ankle to slimy pickpockets, various things may go wrong and ruin your vacation. What I do for all my trips is getting travel insurance from HeyMondo . Once you have a few journeys under your belt, you can easily appreciate its tremendous value and the freedom it gives you. While I sincerely wish you never have to use it, life happens ( even more when you are traveling ) and it’s always good to be prepared.

What about the water?

Tap water is supposed to be safe but I advise against drinking it. It’s just not worth the risk. There are various drinking fountains in the city as well but my advice is to use bottled water and save yourself from unexpected stomach problems.

How is the internet?

Good Wi-Fi can be found everywhere. If you are from the EU you should be able to use your own data plan too.

What Is the Rome Omnia card and is it worth it?

The Omnia Card is a sightseeing pass and discount tourist card valid for 72 hrs. It includes: – Free entry to Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel – plus a free Wi-Fi downloadable audio guide for St Peter’s Basilica. | Sistine Chapel is included in the regular ticket anyway. Value – 29 EUR . – Free entry to your choice of 2 out of 6 top Rome attractions including The Coliseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill, Capitolini Museums, Borghese Gallery, and National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo. |  Let’s be honest here, you’re going to use those for the Colosseum and the Roman Forum which requires just one ticket anyways. Value – 18.00 EUR (Colosseum and forum ticket price). – Fast Track Entry to St Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel & The Colosseum   |  Be there early and you won’t wait in line for the Basilica. The online tickets for the museums include “skip the line” and if you buy the ticket for the forum, you won’t wait for the Colosseum. Value – 0 .

– Free hop-on-hop-off bus tour ticket of Rome for 3 days. | it’s really hard to spot the stops of these things and even if it wasn’t –  Rome is all about walking. If you do enjoy this type of activity though, its value is 27 EUR .

– Free travel card for unlimited access to Rome’s public transport system . | it’s a 1.50 euro ticket and you will use it 4 times at max. Value – 6.00 EUR. – Free detailed Guidebook to help plan the perfect trip | You’ve just read a better one here . Value – 0. – Discounted Entry to another 30 plus sights, attractions, and museums in Rome. You don’t have the time and the discounts are around 10% anyway. Let’s say random value – 5 EUR . And they give you a paper map of the city…yeah… you get a paper map in the 21st century. Sooo the total value of the card is..drum roll.. 85 EUR . And this is if you use the hop-on-hop-off bus. Without it, it’s 58 EUR . The actual price of the card is..drum rolls again… 113 EUR ! Why is it recommended by so many bloggers then? Simple answer – commission fees (bloggers have to eat too, right ?).

To be fair the card is not all that bad. It’s quite convenient to have all your tickets in one place and It also saves you the hassle of buying them separately. If your accommodation is far from the city center you’ll end up using public transport quite often so the Omnia card would be useful. Since I spent all my time walking, and I had no problem to go out early and avoid the lines, for me the card wasn’t worth it. If you, however, prefer the hassle-free way, you can order the Omnia card from their site .

3 day Rome itinerary pin

Saturday 9th of October 2021

Thinking of 3 days beginning December. Is it a bit risky weather wise? Don't really mind the cold but the rain may not be so nice to travel around mainly by foot. Hope to continue to Florence and Venice after.

Tuesday 19th of October 2021

Hi Steve, Rome and Florence should be ok. They both have around 8 das of rain in December. Venice, however, experience a lot of floods so you better pack a pair of galoshes :)

Friday 21st of February 2020

I usually never post comments but I just wanted to say that this post was perfect! I'm planning to spend 3 full days in Rome soon, and this post was so helpful and I love that you included the google map.

Wishing you more safe and amazing travels!

Thank you for the kind words, Saniya! Have fun in Rome and eat some pizza for me :)

Sunday 26th of January 2020

Hi there! Came across your post while researching Rome and I wanna say THANK YOU!! The post was very informative and helpful, and I love all the extra touches with the details and tips. I am also very impressed by your other recommendations that is not on the main guide. Your blog is amazing!!

Monday 27th of January 2020

Thank you! Glad I can help. Have a great trip to Rome and have a pizza slice for me too, please :)

Friday 10th of January 2020

Thank you for the incredibly helpful guide! I am planning a trip to Rome for the first time in April and am considering getting an Airbnb in Trastevere. Would you recommend it? On a map, it looks like it wouldn't be that far to walk across the river to the main city, but you do mention in your guide that it is a bit of a detour.

Saturday 11th of January 2020

HI there Olivia, Staying in Trastevere is not a bad idea, especially if you're a foodie and you want to taste the best of Rome. The neighborhood is quite big so in order to be close to the other attractions I suggest to search for Airbnb close to the river, close to the Vatican City or somewhere alongside Viale di Trastevere (the main street there with many bus and tram stops).

It does look close on the map but have in mind you'll (most likely) walk a lot around Rome and when the day ends it would really suck to have another 2-3kms to get back to your room. On the plus side, you can easily catch a sunset on the Janiculum Terrace, wich I strongy recommend:)

I hope this helps :)

Monday 14th of October 2019

Amazing blog. Detailed, easy to read, honest and doable. Not pretentious as well. The map is an added bonus. Anxiety lessened. Thank you for this. Will definitely be using this as a guide to Rome next month.

Thank you, Mike!

Have a great time in Rome :)

When in Rome Tours

HEART OF ROME WALKING TOUR

Quick Details

  • Hour Glass Duration: 2 Hours
  • Tag Tour category: Rome Tours

A stroll through the heart of the Roman Dolce Vita. Catch the best of Baroque Rome, including the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Venezia while taking in the bustling Roman atmosphere (and of course an authentic Italian gelato) en route!

Meet your guide in Piazza Venezia, also referred to as the “Heart of Rome” where five major roads connect and historic landmarks abound. Italy’s tomb of the unknown soldier, Mussolini’s famous balcony, and Napoleon’s Pied-a-terre in Rome are just a few of the landmarks you’ll find here before we move on.

No visit to Rome is complete without a trip to the Trevi Fountain, immortalized in Fellini’s film “La Dolce Vita” by none other than Anita Ekberg when she decided to take an impromptu dip on screen. Be sure to toss three coins into the blue water before moving on, as this is one tour you’ll want to repeat!

The next stop is the Pantheon, a second-to-none architectural marvel built nearly 2,000 years ago as a Pagan temple to honor all the Gods. The sky was the limit when it came to building temples to the Gods of Ancient Rome, and hear the details of how 16 Corinthian columns weighing 60 tons each were quarried in Egypt, dragged for more than 100km to the River Nile, and then shipped across the Mediterranean.

Fast forwarding just 1500 years, feast your eyes on Piazza Navona, a picturesque promenade that lies above what was once emperor Domitian’s stadium. Enjoy the scene of buskers and street artists while Bernini’s remarkable Baroque fountains take center stage. While you take in the stunning Fountain of Four Rivers, your guide will tell the tale of a 17th century feud between rival artists Bernini and Borromini that would be immortalized in their masterpieces.

As we conclude the tour in Piazza Navona, enjoy a gelato at one of Rome’s top gelaterie and make the most of your time with a true local. Feel free to ask your guide for tips on getting around, where to eat, shop or visit during your stay in Rome!

  • Rome’s historic center is easily walkable and full of heart-stopping masterpieces around every corner, with a local guide you won’t miss a thing!
  • Toss your coins in the Trevi Fountain to be sure you’ll return to Rome
  • Enjoy a gelato as the Romans do at a historic gelateria

You can gain access to Rome's top sites and get a workout in.

In a world where walking and biking tours have long been the norm for city explorations, a fresh and exhilarating alternative has burst onto the scene, particularly in Rome, a city steeped in millennia of history. This novel approach isn't just another variant of the theme of urban discovery; it's a transformative experience that marries the vibrancy of physical activity with the depth of cultural immersion. ArcheoRunning , the pioneering company behind this concept, has redefined the traditional sightseeing tour by introducing running as the vehicle for an intimate encounter with Rome's architectural splendors.

Founded by Isabella Calidonna, a multifaceted professional with deep roots in art history, tour guiding, and athletics coaching, ArcheoRunning encapsulates her passion for educating and inspiring others. Calidonna's unique vision for ArcheoRunning arose from a desire to offer a more dynamic and engaging way to experience the Eternal City's countless wonders. By combining her expertise in history and athletics, she crafted tours that challenge the body and enrich the mind, allowing participants to absorb Rome's ancient stories in an entirely new light.

The essence of ArcheoRunning's tours is to make history palpable, turning each run through Rome into a journey through time. Unlike static or slow-moving tours, running injects a sense of adventure and excitement into exploring historical sites. This kinetic form of learning facilitates a deeper connection between the participant and the surroundings, making each discovery feel personal and alive.

ArcheoRunning offers a variety of tours designed to cater to different interests and fitness levels. The Early Bird Running/Walking Tour captures the serene beauty of Rome at dawn, a time when the city's iconic landmarks, usually teeming with tourists, take on a tranquil and almost otherworldly charm. Starting at the poignant site of Julius Caesar's assassination, runners wind their way through the heart of ancient Rome, from the majestic Capitoline Hill to the imposing Colosseum, all while basking in the golden hue of the morning light.

For those intrigued by the lesser-seen aspects of the city, the Hidden Rome Tour is a revelation. It leads participants through the labyrinthine alleys and byways of Rome, each uncovering layers of history and tales of yore that are often overshadowed by the city's more famous attractions. This tour is akin to a treasure hunt, where the prizes are the stories and secrets that have shaped Rome's character over the centuries.

Perhaps the most exclusive of ArcheoRunning's offerings is The Unveiled Colosseum Tour, which grants participants rare access to parts of the Colosseum not typically open to the public. This partnership with the Parco archeologico del Colosseo allows runners to explore the ancient amphitheater's hidden corridors and chambers, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who once walked its grounds. It's an immersive experience that bridges past and present, allowing for a moment of reflection on the grandeur and brutality of ancient Roman society.

ArcheoRunning's tours are more than just physical activities; they are educational experiences that engage all senses. The sound of footsteps on ancient cobblestones, the sight of the sun rising over historic edifices, the touch of worn marble, and the stories that fill the air all contribute to a rich tapestry of memories that participants will carry with them long after their run is over.

In an age where travelers seek more authentic and meaningful connections with the places they visit, ArcheoRunning stands out as a beacon of innovation. It challenges the notion of passive sightseeing and invites visitors to engage with Rome's history in an invigorating and enlightening manner. Whether you're a seasoned runner or simply someone who loves history and is open to exploring it in a novel way, ArcheoRunning offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of one of the world's most fascinating cities. It's an invitation to experience Rome as a spectator and an active participant (literally) in its storied past.

I've been a tour guide in Rome for 16 years. Here are 9 of the biggest mistakes tourists make.

  • Tourists visiting Rome often make mistakes that detract from their experience in the city.
  • I've worked as a tour guide here for 16 years, and many people forget to plan their trip in advance.
  • Disregarding dress codes, ignoring local customs, and booking short trips can also be mistakes.

Insider Today

My husband and I have 25 and 16 years, respectively, of guiding experience in Rome. He's a licensed guide who leads cultural, archeological, and art tours, and I am a certified sommelier who leads food and wine tours.

When visiting Rome , tourists often make several common mistakes that can detract from their experience in the Eternal City — ranging from simple cultural misunderstandings to more serious breaches of etiquette.

My husband and I often discuss some of the more frustrating things we wish guests knew before they visited. Here are the top mistakes we've seen.

Disregarding dress codes

Tourists often fail to adhere to dress codes when visiting religious sites, such as St. Peter's Basilica or the Sistine Chapel.

Wearing revealing clothing can be seen as disrespectful in these sacred spaces, so make sure to look up guidelines beforehand.

Typically, at least the knees and shoulders must be covered.

Ignoring local customs

Many visitors overlook the importance of local customs , such as greeting people with a polite "Buongiorno" in the morning and "Buonasera" in the evening.

Small gestures like this can go a long way in showing respect for Roman culture.

Not tipping their servers

Tipping is less customary in Italy than in some other countries, and it's not expected or mandatory. But leaving a few euros per person on top of the bill is considered polite in Rome.

I don't know why so many guidebooks and articles state that the "coperto" is a service charge that goes to the server. This is untrue — it covers things like the bread, olive oil, and vinegar for the restaurant.

Related stories

But if you see the word "servizio" on the receipt, that money goes to the server.

Booking too short of a trip

Rome is more than just the Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, and Trevi Fountain — it deserves time. It's the Eternal City with over 2 millennia of history to get through, after all.

Confining yourself to the most heavily touristed areas usually means missing out on some authentic local experiences off the beaten path.

Many tourists are only in Rome for two or three days, which doesn't give them much time to visit lesser-known sites like Ostia Antia or contemporary museums like Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna.

As we say in Rome, "Roma, non basta una vita" ("In Rome, a lifetime is not enough"). I know people's holidays are limited, but instead of trying to visit four Italian cities in a week , maybe slow down and give Rome at least five days.

Relying solely on English

English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but learning some basic Italian phrases or using a translation app can significantly enhance your interactions with locals.

It's also a way to demonstrate respect for the host culture.

Not planning ahead

Visitors often need to pay more attention to the time and effort required to visit Rome's most popular attractions if they want to avoid long lines and frustration.

Tours of the Colosseum or Vatican often sell out months in advance.

One of my favorite websites for up-to-date advice for travelers planning trips to Rome is Rome Wise . You can find information on anything from the best cocktail bars and hotels to art exhibits and even general helpful information.

Visiting at the wrong time

If you're deciding when to come, most guidebooks and travel sites advise people to skip Rome in August.

But I think July is more unbearably hot and crowded — August is much cooler. Since more Italian people tend to be on holiday in August, it can also be less crowded.

Disrespecting art and architecture

Tourists occasionally disregard the rules against touching artwork, leaning on ancient structures, or sitting on historic fountains, which can damage these important cultural treasures.

You don't want to end up on the local news as a tourist who took a piece of marble from the Roman Forum or left graffiti on the Colosseum.

Missing out on the local cuisine

Tourists often stick to familiar dishes or opt for restaurants in high-traffic areas — missing out on the incredible diversity of Roman cuisine and the charm of neighborhood trattorias (small restaurants).

Italian food is seasonal. Rome might be famous for artichokes, but if you're eating them in June, they probably aren't local (the vegetable is only in season from February until April).

I recommend following advice from the local food experts at Casa Mia . They have excellent information on seasonal cuisine, and they offer food and wine tours.

Sublime With Rome — which currently has no members of the original ska band — is embarking on a farewell tour. This comes after the founding members of Sublime announced their rebrand with singer Jakob Nowell, the son of original Sublime singer Bradley Nowell.

The tour kicks off April 11 in Catoosa, Okla., and runs until Sept. 14 in Kansas City, Mo. Sublime With Rome, which formed in 2010 to carry on Sublime’s legacy after Bradley Nowell’s death in 1996, will also release a final single titled “Love Is Dangerous.”

The dates for Sublime With Rome’s farewell tour overlap with Sublime’s dates with Nowell. Sublime — that is Nowell, Gaugh and Wilson — will perform at Coachella on April 13 and 20. Sublime With Rome will be in Texas, Connecticut and New Jersey during those dates.

Ramirez said in a statement, “I’m beyond excited to announce our upcoming farewell tour! As we gear up to hit your city, the excitement is brewing. Get ready for an epic night filled with not only the Sublime hits but a special focus on never-before-heard SWR originals. This tour is a unique opportunity to celebrate the incredible journey we’ve had together with our fans. Join us for an unforgettable evening as we reminisce and create lifelong memories. The players championship betting promos | best pga tour sites: pocket $3000+ in bonuses, share this article.

There are a few golf tournaments with more prestige than The Players Championship, but none that are as lucrative. When defending champion Scottie Scheffler and the rest of the 144-player field tee it up Thursday at TPC Sawgrass, they’ll be competing for their share of the $25 million purse — including $4.5 million to the winner. But why should the golfers be the only ones who benefit? The nation’s best online sportsbooks have created some monstrous Players Championship betting promos that can make life swell for new customers.

We’ll deliver the details on these welcome offers in a moment, but first: How good does Scheffler look right now? He has been the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer for the last 10 months — ever since he shared second place at the 2023 PGA Championship — but he has never looked more dominant during this run than he did at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.

These Players Championship betting promos available on the leading golf betting sites provide first-time customers with the opportunity to grab thousands of dollars in bonus bets and first-bet insurance. And not only is The Players Championship something special, but Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament is just a few days away, so you will have plenty of betting opportunities to pad your bankroll.

Best Players Championship Betting Promos & Bonuses – Welcome Offers of Bonus Bets & More for PGA Tour Odds

Note: You can now access special North Carolina sportsbook promos as North Carolina sports betting launched on March 11.

BetMGM Players Championship Betting Promos Bonus Code SBWIRE

When you create a BetMGM account with the BetMGM bonus code SBWIRE , you’re guaranteed $150 in bonus bets as soon as you play a $5 first bet.

Why, yes, it’s actually this simple. The moment you place a $5 first bet on The Players Championship or any other sport you’ll find on the BetMGM app — one of the industry’s most comprehensive sports betting apps — you’ll see six $25 bonus bets land in your account. You’ll have seven days to play these bonus bets.

To turn a bonus bet in cash, keep in mind the BetMGM bonus code SBWIRE and the rest of the sportsbook promo codes featured in this story abide by a 1X playthrough requirement. This means any bonus bet needs to win just one time for you to win the profit in cash.

For golf bettors in North Carolina looking to legally wager on a tournament for the first time, you can sign up with the BetMGM North Carolina bonus code right now and take advantage of a special welcome offer.

Caesars Sportsbook Players Championship Betting Promo Code SBWIRE1000

Caesars Sportsbook is an institution that likes to provide high limits and full protection of first bets. This means when you register for an account with the Caesars Sportsbook promo code SBWIRE1000 , you receive a first bet up to $1,000 on Caesars.

The words “on Caesars” have some serious cachet. Caesars Sportsbook has your back on your first bet when it’s anywhere from $10 to $1,000. If your first bet wins, you’re richer and happier. But if your first bet goes in the water, Caesars Sportsbook jumps in and rescues it. They’ll return the amount of your first bet to your account in the form of one bet credit. You’ll have 14 days to play this credit.

With North Carolina betting apps now live, bettors in the Tar Heel state can use the Caesars Sportsbook North Carolina promo code to unlock an exciting welcome bonus.

Fanatics Sportsbook Players Championship Betting Promos Promo Code

Are you someone who prides themselves on consistency and wants to be rewarded for it? Then you’re probably a Fanatics Sportsbook person. When you start an account with the Fanatics Sportsbook promo , you can earn up to $1,000 in bonus bets over a 10-day period.

Here’s the deal: On Day 1, make a first bet up to $100 on The Players Championship or any other event. Whatever you choose to wager, that’s the amount of the bonus bet Fanatics Sportsbook will give you. On the next nine calendar days, you have the same opportunity. So, if you place a $100 first bet each of those 10 days, then you’ll have $1,000 in bonus bets.

DraftKings Players Championship Betting Promo Code

DraftKings has carved out a bunch of its significant market share on the strength of its No Sweat First Bet. Right now, if you sign up for a DraftKings account with the DraftKings promo code and make a minimum wager of $5, you’ll secure $150 in bonus bet instantly.

Your opening bet doesn’t even need to return as a winner for you to grab this bonus, which comes in the form of six $25 bonus bets that expire in seven days.

Bettors in the Tar Heel State can now use the DraftKings North Carolina promo code to wager on The Players Championship or on this week’s ACC Tournament.

FanDuel Players Championship Betting Promo Code

As we mentioned before, you can sign up for as many of these welcome offers as you want. Here’s the last Players Championship betting promo offer in this article: When you launch a FanDuel account with the FanDuel promo code and place a $5 first bet that wins, then you’ll be rewarded with $200 in bonus bets.

Obviously, you want to win that $5 first bet. To do so, we think it’s easiest to find a college basketball game and place a moneyline bet on a massive favorite. In our estimation, the biggest favorite on Wednesday’s schedule is Villanova to defeat DePaul in a Big East tournament first-round game. The Blue Demons have lost 19 straight games and Villanova beat them by 25 and 36 points during the regular season.

Once your $5 first bet wins, your $200 in bonus bets go into your account within 72 hours. You get seven days to play your bonus bets and FanDuel allows you to chop up that 200 into as many (or as few) bonus bets as you want. Each time a bonus bet wins, the profit is all yours in cash.
