Insider Today

Avenues: The World School is a private school in New York City for nursery through 12th grade that costs $56,400 per year.

Avenues operates campuses in New York City, Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Shenzhen, China. The New York campus was the first to open in 2012, but Avenues plans to build campuses in at least 20 cities in the next decade, including Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Miami, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Singapore. Avenues wants to be thought of as " one school with many interconnected and interdependent campuses  located in the world's leading cities," according to the website.

Parents of Avenues children reportedly range from hedge-fund managers and entrepreneurs to tech millionaires and celebrities. Suri Cruise, the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, reportedly attended the school .

Students at Avenues are given MacBooks and iPads, take yoga and dance classes, and graduate fluent in either Mandarin or Spanish.

Tuition includes all books and materials, field trips, transportation to and from school activities, lunch, snacks, athletic uniforms, and educational technology such as the Apple products.

I took a tour of the New York City campus in Chelsea with Alissa Dufour, the school's communication director. Here's what it looked like.

Avenues: The World School is a private school in New York City for nursery through 12th grade that costs $56,400 per year.

The 1,650 students come from all over Manhattan, parts of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Hoboken and Jersey City, and even from as far as Long Island and Western Connecticut — often because their parents already commute into the city, according to David Buckwald, the director of admissions.

Parents of Avenues children range from hedge-fund managers and entrepreneurs to tech millionaires and celebrities. Suri Cruise, the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, reportedly attended the school .

Avenues also attracts international families who are living in New York and who perhaps have multiple citizenships, Buckwald said.

The school is in Chelsea, an affluent Manhattan neighborhood just south of Hudson Yards, the city's new $25 billion development.

Students can also take online courses.

"One [of our students] is a pre-Olympic athlete, one is starring on Broadway, and they're able to take a semester leave of absence but stay enrolled in Avenues through our online campus," Buckwald said.

Chelsea, an area known for its art galleries, is one of the city's wealthier and more expensive neighborhoods.

suri cruise nyc school

The median household income in Chelsea is $111,665, as compared to $60,762 citywide.

And the median sale price in Chelsea in 2019 was $1.2 million, according to Property Shark.

Approximately 16% of students at Avenues receive financial aid , Buckwald told me, and the school provided more than $9 million in financial aid for the 2018-19 school year.

Avenues, I noticed, is right across the street from public housing, the Chelsea-Elliot Houses.

I visited Avenues last spring for a tour of its campus and to speak to the admissions director.

suri cruise nyc school

Avenues is a highly selective school and uses a holistic admissions process, which means they "look at many components of an application or a candidacy in context with each other and not necessarily relying on one piece more than another or looking at some kind of a formula to predict admissions decisions," David Buckwald, the director of admissions, told me.

The school does not release its admissions rate.

This is the main entrance where students enter the school.

suri cruise nyc school

To apply to Avenues, prospective students and parents submit an online application and a $100 fee. The rest of the process varies by grade level.

For students in nursery, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade, Avenues conducts small playgroups to assess potential students, where they watch how students play when they're unsupervised and how they take directions.

After telling security I had an appointment, I checked in at the front desk and waited to be picked up the school's communications director, Alissa Dufour.

suri cruise nyc school

If a student is entering Avenues in high school — grades nine through 12 — admissions conducts a conversation with the student.

For the middle grades, Avenues implements what it calls "design challenges," where a potential student is paired up with another applicant at the same level and asked to create an object from random materials provided. During this challenge, the admissions team is looking for signs of empathy, creativity, resourcefulness, collaboration, and a willingness to ask questions.

"We learn a lot about the student and if they may be a good fit here," Buckwald said.

Near the front entrance of the school is Restore, a café where students can grab breakfast, lunch, snacks, pastries and sweets, and hot and cold beverages throughout the school day.

suri cruise nyc school

The café is open to parents, faculty, staff, and visitors from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parents and students pay by swiping their ID badges.

The school also has its own gift shop selling Avenues swag, which was closed at the time of my visit.

A collection of TV screens displayed school announcements, events, and the weather in Sao Paulo, the school's Brazil campus.

suri cruise nyc school

Avenues puts a heavy focus on technology .

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are issued an iPad Air, grades 6-9 are given a MacBook Air, and grades 10-12 receive both a MacBook Air and an iPad.

Starting in sixth grade, students can take the devices home with them.

The cafeteria was huge and filled with light from the windows overlooking the High Line park.

suri cruise nyc school

On the day of my visit, the menu included beef, California turkey, and samosa sliders with a bean mango salsa dip.

I spotted two Bevi machines in the cafeteria, which dispense still and sparkling flavored water.

suri cruise nyc school

The healthy food options at the cafeteria included a salad bar, a fruit salad bar, and various fresh fruit up for grabs.

I looked at a sample Avenues lunch menu, and dishes included maple sweet potato soup, whole wheat pasta with "revved up" marinara, a miso chicken rice bowl, all-natural beef burgers with whole wheat buns, spiced sweet potato enchiladas, steamed edamame, roasted zucchini, tabbouleh salad, and organic kale salad.

We went upstairs to check out some of the classrooms, and I was surprised by the lack of individual desks in some of the rooms.

suri cruise nyc school

Classes for the upper grades at Avenues are conducted in a seminar style, as they often are in colleges.

Avenues offers Spanish and Mandarin as foreign languages, and from nursery through fifth grade, half of students' classes are taught in one of those languages.

suri cruise nyc school

Students will spend one day taught completely in English and the next day immersed in Chinese or Spanish.

Avenues' goal is to have students fluent in a second language by the time they graduate.

Looking out an upper-floor window, I spotted the High Line park below.

suri cruise nyc school

"We try to push students out into the community for science experiments on the High Line," Buckwald told me. "And the first artwork they see beside what's in the school or on their own is right nearby in the [Chelsea] galleries. Pre-K[indergarten]ers doing gallery tours!"

At a student lounge area with a living plant wall, students were chatting, working, and playing chess.

suri cruise nyc school

Avenues students don't wear a uniform, but they do have a dress code: Students should only wear black, gray, and white.

The sports facilities at Avenues include this spacious fitness and weight room.

suri cruise nyc school

It comes with weight machines, exercise balls, free weights, treadmills, and rowing machines.

There's also a dance and yoga studio.

suri cruise nyc school

Grades nine through 11 at Avenues can sign up for elective fitness classes that include spinning, boxing, yoga, dance, pilates, and martial arts.

Some fitness classes are also taught at the nearby Chelsea Park.

suri cruise nyc school

I'd always imagined the main drawback of going to school in Manhattan to be the lack of outdoor space, but Avenues seems to take full advantage of nearby public spaces.

The 20,000-square-foot, full-size gymnasium is on the top floor of Avenues.

suri cruise nyc school

Avenues students also have access to sports facilities at nearby Chelsea Piers.

Sports offered at Avenues include soccer, girls' volleyball, cross-country, tennis, basketball, fencing, squash, track and field, baseball, lacrosse, golf, and crew.

There's also a playground on the rooftop.

After touring the main building, I was led a block away on 26th Street to Avenues' newest facility, the Early Learning Center (ELC) & Co.Lab.

suri cruise nyc school

The ELC & Co.Lab is home to nursery through kindergarten students on the lower floors, while the top floor is dedicated to grade 9-12 students in science, art, World Course , and English.

This space was home to even more greenery and living plant walls.

suri cruise nyc school

All the materials in the four-floor facility were sourced from producers who prioritize sustainability and environmental accountability.

In the ELC, students eat lunch in their classrooms. The fixtures and furniture, including classroom sinks and cubbies, were chosen with the ergonomics of three to six-year-olds in mind.

suri cruise nyc school

The natural carpets from renewable sources perform as air filters, reducing airborne dust and allergens, according to the website.

Outside was a spacious play area with tricycles, balls, and even mini-picnic tables.

suri cruise nyc school

And just inside is a multi-purpose room for other physical activities.

There is, however, a fully equipped teaching kitchen, where teachers can conduct hands-on culinary projects with students.

suri cruise nyc school

Past culinary projects have included making dumplings for the Chinese New Year, for example.

The upper floor is the Co.Lab, where upper grades have dedicated areas for STEAM subjects: science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

suri cruise nyc school

"It's a space for students to work on interdisciplinary projects collaboratively or independently," Dufour told me.

Students can drop in and work on projects both during and after class.

The classrooms in the Early Learning Center feature floor-to-ceiling windows.

suri cruise nyc school

The "uniquely designed ceiling treatment addresses room acoustics, height, and act as a system to hang student work as well as provide optimal lighting levels," according to the website.

At the end of the school day, I noticed a line of shiny black cars parked outside the entrance to Avenues. Signs displayed on the windshield displayed a student's first name and grade level.

suri cruise nyc school

Dufour later told me that some students get picked up by car in the afternoon by their parents, and others by caregivers.

They sign up at the beginning of the year and are given a placard, so at the end of the school day, the teacher can read the placard and alert staff inside which child can be dismissed.

"It's just a way to simplify the dismissal process and ensure that students get home safely," Dufour told me.

Many students also take public transportation or ride private buses or buses through the NYC Office of Pupil Transportation, she said.

To round out my tour, I went up to the High Line to get an alternate view of Avenues. Walking past, I could peek into the cafeteria where I'd been an hour before.

suri cruise nyc school

Avenues is too new of a school to have produced any notable alumni at this point. But I could immediately see why its curriculum, student experience, focus on foreign languages, international footprint — and of course, exclusivity — appeal to well-off, global-minded parents and students.

Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise

When it comes to famous celebrity kids, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s daughter Suri has made her mark in more ways than one. Currently living in NYC with mom Holmes, Suri has been a subject of fascination since the moment she was born — but then again, that’s what happens when you’re the kid of Tom Cruise. When Cruise and Holmes had a dramatic split in 2012, Suri’s life was changed forever as she and Holmes moved across the country and severed ties with Cruise. Facing more paparazzi attention than ever, Suri’s formative years were undeniably tough — but all the while, she’s grown up beautifully from a fashionista toddler to a mature, accomplished teen.

Cruise and Holmes’ relationship (and subsequently, Suri) got as much attention as it did largely because of Cruise’s association with the Church of Scientology, whose influence Holmes was reportedly trying to escape when she filed for divorce. But Holmes fleeing to the East Coast only intensified the paparazzi attention around them, and Suri’s mom knows it can’t have been easy for her daughter .

“We were followed a lot when she was little,” Holmes previously told Instyle . “I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at, like, 6 in the morning when nobody would see us.”

While all that attention might have made some kids want to run and hide, Suri embraced it, waving at the paparazzi cheekily and marching to the beat of her own drum. “She came out very strong —  she’s always been a strong personality,” Holmes added.

Now, Suri is soon about to enter the world of college and looking more like mom Holmes every day. Here are a few things you should know about this remarkable young lady.

A version of this was originally published in April 2020.

Her Name Has a Special Meaning

suri cruise nyc school

Suri means “Princess” in Hebrew — a fitting name for this rising star.

She’s Studied Ballet & Guitar

suri cruise nyc school

Suri Cruise has been taking ballet her whole life, and dad Tom used to drop her off at dance lessons. She also briefly studied guitar, but dropped the classes over conflict with the teacher.

She Went to Private School Avenues in Manhattan

Avenues is an elite private school in Manhattan where Holmes enrolled her daughter. Tuition costs $56,000 per year.

Her Shoe Collection As a Kid Was Worth $150,000

Suri’s wardrobe in her early years was a thing of legend, with all the wealth of Cruise and Holmes behind her. She was once named “Hollywood’s Hottest Tot” because of how frequently her style was mentioned in the news, and reportedly had a wardrobe worth $3.2 million — $150,000 just in shoes.

She Loves Broadway Shows

suri cruise nyc school

One perk of having moved to the East Coast? Suri has all the access she wants to her favorite broadway shows, and thanks to mom Holmes, can usually get backstage too. So far, she’s seen Finding Neverland, Cats, School of Rock, Kinky Boots, Dear Evan Hansen, and more.

Suri lived with her mom and dad until she was six years old, arriving six months before their Nov. 2006 wedding. When Holmes filed for divorce in 2012, she was awarded primary custody of Suri with visitation rights granted to Cruise, and she’s lived with her mom ever since.

While we may still picture Suri like this at times, there’s no denying the teen is growing up! On a recent shopping trip in NYC, Suri and mom Holmes were spotted side by side (see Daily Mail photos here ), and Suri looks just a few inches away from her mom’s 5’9″ frame .

She’s A Big Animal Lover

In early 2022, Suri adopted an adorable puppy. She’s been seen walking the little pup around, looking as happy as can be.

She Adores Fashion

Per DailyMail , Suri has a wardrobe reportedly worth $5 million, further showing her love for fashion.

She Has Musical Talents

For the past few years, Suri has hinted at her affinity for music. In fact, for the film Katie directed called  Alone Together,  Suri sang “Blue Moon” on the soundtrack, and she’s considering majoring in music in college, per DailyMail .

Katie Holmes enrolls Suri Cruise in Catholic girls' school

Come September, Suri Cruise will attend an all-girls school in New York City, according to The Los Angeles Times.

PHOTOS: Who's the cuter tot - Suri Cruise or Shiloh Jolie-Pitt?

Katie Holmes, 33, has reportedly enrolled her daughter, 6, in Manhattan's prestigious Convent of the Sacred Heart. The school's notable alumnae list includes Lady Gaga, 26, Jordana Brewster, 32, Paris Hilton, 31, Caroline Kennedy, 54, and the late Gloria MorganVanderbilt.

When classes begin, the previously homeschooled Suri will be required to attend Catholic mass every Thursday. Tuition at Convent of the Sacred Heart costs $38,000 a year.

Holmes and her daughter are currently living in a $12,500-a-month apartment in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood. In a previously released statement, Holmes and Tom Cruise, 50, vowed that they "are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri's best interests." The "Romantics" actress received primary custody of Suri, though Cruise has been granted visitation rights.

Suri cruise enrolled in exclusive private school in chelsea: report.

Stephanie Marcus

Senior Entertainment Editor, HuffPost

Come September, the students of Avenues are going to have a very famous classmate.

Though earlier reports claimed Katie Holmes had enrolled Suri Cruise in the prestigious all-girls Catholic school Convent of the Sacred Heart, Life & Style magazine reports that Suri will actually be a student at Avenues, an exclusive new private school, which is set to open this fall in Chelsea.

Suri had previously been home-schooled, but the 6-year-old is "really excited" about starting her new school, especially after her mother told her all about the school's lunchrooms, basketball courts and various activities, a source told the magazine.

It's easy to understand why the school would appeal to Holmes, as it's just a 10-minute walk from their Chelsea apartment , overlooks the High Line , boasts a rooftop playground and has a gym with full-size basketball and volleyball courts.

Tuition to the ultra-fancy school costs nearly $40,000 a year -- which is average for most New York City private schools , according to the New York Times .

Manhattan's newest private school will teach students from preschool through 12th grade, and stresses a bilingual education, so Suri may learn Spanish or Mandarin along with the basics: reading, writing, math, science and music, reports Life & Style.

The school encourages parents to think of Avenues as one international school with 20 or more campuses around the globe. According to the school's website , "It will not be a collection of 20 different schools all pursuing different educational strategies, but rather one highly-integrated 'learning community,' connected and supported by a common vision, a shared curriculum, collective professional development of its faculty, the wonders of modern technology and a highly-talented headquarters team located here in New York City."

The idea is that by middle school or high school, students will spend a number of six-to-eight-week periods studying at campuses in Buenos Aires, Paris, Delhi and Cairo.

Like the majority of private schools, Avenues requires students to wear uniforms , which will be a big change for Hollywood's best-dressed child. Suri will be required to wear a white polo shirt, blouse or turtleneck, along with gray or black pants, skirts, jumpers or shorts. While students may not wear any logos other than the school's own, they are permitted to wear any color accessories, including socks, tights, belts, ties and hairbands.

At Avenues, students are expected to study in either Spanish, Mandarin or English, and Suri's daily classes will include anything from humanities and literacy to maths, science and physical education.

Interestingly, Avenues is also one of the schools in NYC to enforce school uniforms - something our little fashionista might struggle with.

The school, which has an average of 2,600 applications each new year, also expects their students to be bi-lingual or tri-lingual in its effort to be known as one of the best language schools in the city.

It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that if Suri stays through to grade nine, she'll spend the year studying abroad.

When asked about the youngest Cruise's enrolment, an Avenues' World spokesperson told E! News that "It is our policy not to comment on any prospective or current student, parent and family members."

E! also reported that, although the final number is not official, the fee for the 2013-2014 school year will be in the $40,000 range.

Her first day attending the for-profit school in the hip New York suburb will be next month.

Suri Cruise Is Growing Up Fast

Suri Cruise holding hands

In April 2006, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed their daughter  Suri Cruise . The fascination with Suri has always been high, with some people referring to her as the most famous celebrity child in the world. From her gorgeous looks to her uncommon name, just about everyone has been fascinated with Suri at one point or another. "We had the name before we found out because we both thought the baby would be a girl," Tom told Vanity Fair after Suri's birth. "Some friends of ours sent us two [baby-naming] books. When we came to the name Suri, we both loved it. And we both said, 'Suri Cruise.' We later found out that it meant 'red rose,' and that was just a bonus. Suri — it was perfect," he added.

When Suri was six, her mother made the decision to leave her marriage, walking away from Tom — and from the Church of Scientology. Although Holmes has never really discussed her divorce in depth, the going theory was that she wanted to "protect Suri from Scientology," which Tom later confirmed was indeed his ex's thought process behind the split, according to ABC News . As Suri has gotten older, Holmes has done her best to allow her to live life as normal as possible. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Suri hasn't had a relationship with her father in more than a decade. Nevertheless, time hasn't stopped, and Suri has grown into a beautiful young woman.

The obsession with Suri Cruise started before she was born

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' relationship took the world by storm in the early 2000s and their love story became fodder for tabloids all over the globe. And, during an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in May 2005, Tom Cruise completely let loose, jumping up on Winfrey's couch and proclaiming his love for the "Dawson's Creek" actor. That moment was so crazy that people still talk about it today — it's a moment frozen in time that most people will never forget. Five months later, People magazine reported that TomKat was expecting their first child together. "Tom and Katie are very excited, and the entire family is very excited," a spokesperson for Tom told the outlet.

It was at this point in time that the stakes for paparazzi seemed to hit a peak. Not only did people want to see photos of Holmes pregnant, but the world couldn't wait to get their first glimpse of America's version of a royal baby. Six months later, Suri Cruise made her grand entrance into the world, but Tom and Holmes decided to keep the first few months of their daughter's life private. Just about everyone was keeping their eyes peeled for a glimpse of Hollywood's first daughter, some even wondering if something was wrong due to the lack of photos. However, Suri made her official debut in October 2006 — and it was clear that there was nothing wrong at all.

Suri Cruise's first photos were magical

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes shared the first photos of their daughter in an impressive spread published by Vanity Fair . "Yes, Suri, She's Our Baby!" read the cover. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, Suri Cruise appeared content as the camera snapped away. The cover shot featured the bouncing baby girl in her father's arms, with her mom looking on. She had a full head of hair and appeared to be the perfect mix of her parents. "She has Kate's lips and eyes. I think she looks like Kate," the "Top Gun" actor told the publication. "I think she has Tom's eyes. I think she looks like Tom," countered Holmes.

On the inside pages of the magazine, Suri became a star. She appeared in an impressive 22-page spread along with her parents, smiling and peering into the camera as if she was made for exactly this moment. And no one was disappointed. Millions of people viewed the first photos of Suri, and the outlet is said to have broken a one-day record with some four million people clicking in for a look. Perhaps even more shocking, when Suri was only three months old, TMZ reported that magazines were willing to pay upwards of $5 million for the first photos of Suri, which is quite a pretty penny for a tiny human who had only been earthside for a handful of months.

From there, paparazzi knew that photos of Suri were a high priority, and that has been the case ever since.

The camera loved Suri Cruise

After the first photos of Suri Cruise emerged, it seemed as though her parents didn't do much to keep her hidden from the world. In fact, they would often take Suri out to various events, and she would be consistently photographed. Not only did the camera love Suri, but she loved the camera, too. There are tons of photos of her looking right into the lens, flashing a smile, and even striking a pose at times. Heck, even Katie Holmes couldn't deny it.

"We were followed a lot when she was little," Holmes recalled during an interview with InStyle in April 2020. "I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at, like, 6 in the morning when nobody would see us. But there's one video where I'm holding her — she was 2 at the time — and she starts waving at the cameras."

As Suri has gotten older, Holmes has done her best to shield her from the ever-present paparazzi. "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her," Holmes told Glamour in an April 2023 interview. One thing that Holmes can't do, however, is stop time. And Suri has grown up so quickly, right in front of all of our eyes.

Suri Cruise has been a fashionista since she was quite young

As Suri Cruise got a bit older, she became very interested in fashion and loved getting dressed up. In June 2011, the Daily Mail reported that Suri had quite an impressive shoe collection worth $150,000. Moreover, she had some really unique pieces in her wardrobe, including "custom-made designs from Marc Jacobs and Christian Louboutin." Not too shabby for a 5-year-old, eh? Outside of Suri's closet, she seemed quite interested in fashion as a whole and started weighing in on her mom's outfit choices, too.

"She'll really tell me [what she thinks]," Katie Holmes told Elle magazine in February 2011, when Suri was nearly five years old. "Like today I'm wearing brown suede pants, and she said, 'I don't like your pants.' But then she'll say, 'You've got to wear these shoes.' Or 'That's so pretty, Mom. Wear that.' She's got a great eye," Holmes admitted.

The next year, Suri found herself back in Vanity Fair , this time involving details of some of her most stylish outfits. Yes, a 6-year-old got her very own article in Vanity Fair thanks to her taste in fashion. From her dresses to her stylish coats, accessories, and, of course, shoes, Suri was a walking fashionista — and no one could deny it.

Suri Cruise became a New Yorker with ease

After spending the early years of her life in California, Suri Cruise moved to New York City with her mom. Around middle-school age, Suri was less into cutesy dresses with frills and bows and more into comfy clothes that had her fitting in effortlessly. Suri seemed to transform into a young lady overnight. She was often photographed with Katie Holmes living her best life in New York, going to museums, sporting stores, and pet shops.

When considering a move to the Big Apple, Holmes had a lot to think about. But first and foremost, she wanted to ensure that Suri was getting the best opportunities to be a kid. In her interview with InStyle, Holmes expressed the excitement she had for moving to Manhattan with Suri and what a great experience it has been for both of them.

"Yes, it's a little too exposed at times, and we work hard to maneuver and navigate. But what I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe. When there are 25 things to do every night, it takes you out of your own thing," she said. Navigating life as a single mom hasn't always been easy for Holmes, but she has always taken the job seriously. Not only has Holmes really enjoyed motherhood, but she has specifically raved about being  Suri's mom, which is super sweet.

Suri Cruise attended Avenues The World School in New York

After moving to New York City with her mom, Suri Cruise enrolled in a private school — Avenues The World School. The private school, located in the Chelsea district, requires its students to wear uniforms. Students can enroll at preschool age and can attend straight through high school, with courses designed to prepare them for college as they reach the higher grade levels. Perhaps unsurprisingly, tuition for the institution isn't cheap. Back in 2013, for example, tuition was estimated to be upwards of $40,000 per academic year. While the campus only first opened in 2012, it boasts quite a track record for its graduating students.

"Students from Avenues' first seven graduating classes are studying at a distinctive array of colleges and universities around the world, including the University of Chicago, Harvard, New York University, the University of Southern California and Stanford," the school's website reads. It's at Avenues that Suri started coming into her own and experiencing a different kind of learning in a safe environment — even impressively learning Mandarin Chinese in Elementary School, as reported by the Daily Mail .

Of course, the paparazzi haven't been too far behind, and photos of Suri as she's gotten older still seem to be a hot commodity. Interestingly, photos of Suri in her school uniform before and after classes are extremely rare, although US Weekly  obtained an adorable pic in October 2012.

Suri Cruise became a total yogi (just like her famous mom)

As Suri Cruise has gotten older, she's developed a love for working out and has been spotted heading to and from various classes, including yoga. In 2019, Katie Holmes told Shape that Suri's been a pretty good workout partner for her. "Sometimes I work out with my daughter. It just depends on the day. We have our routines and occasionally they overlap. But I don't force her to work out with me because I know that's lame," Holmes admitted. Over the years, Suri has been photographed alongside her mom in New York City, heading to a yoga studio to get some exercise.

As Suri has gotten older, she's often been spotted as she heads to the gym to get a workout in. Suri has totally nailed the athleisure look and seems to have embraced her mom's laid-back, casual style, really becoming one with the people of New York. There have been a number of times that an all-grown-up Suri has been photographed wearing yoga pants and a cut-off tank as she's walking the streets of one of the most bustling cities in the world. One thing that can't be denied is that she's her mom's near-clone — from her brown hair to her long, lean legs.

Katie Holmes has wanted to work with Suri Cruise

As Suri Cruise has become a young adult, the relationship that she has with her mom has certainly changed, but the two seem to be closer than ever — even if things look a bit different. "She's an incredible person," Katie Holmes told Glamour. But the buck doesn't stop there. Holmes is such a big fan of her daughter that she has shown some serious interest in working with her professionally.

The actor actually got her daughter to lend her singing voice to a project she'd been working on. The then-16-year-old sang a cover of "Blue Moon" in the film "Alone Together," which was released in July 2022. "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her! She's very, very talented," Holmes told Yahoo! Entertainment . In April 2023, Suri's vocals in the film "Rare Objects" hit streaming platforms.

"I hope she always does something on my films," Holmes told Glamour. "I always ask her. But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people," she added. "So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly."

Suri Cruise has prepared for college

Suri Cruise may be a teenager, but she hasn't lost some of the passions that she discovered when she was young. As she prepares for her college years ahead, sources say that she hopes to study fashion. "Suri is applying to schools all over the place," a close source told the Daily Mail in March 2023. As the world has watched this super famous kid grow and change, it seems that most people want the very best for Suri as she embarks on new opportunities and forges her own path in the world. Of course, she will always have her mother's love and support, which has only helped shape the woman she is becoming.

"Every day, kids get a little further away from you. That's a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it's heartbreaking," Katie Holmes told Town & Country  in February 2017. "You want them to stay with you forever, but they're these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they're going to go. And that's going to be very, very sad for me," she added. Indeed, it does feel like just yesterday Suri was peering into the paparazzi camera while holding her elephant stuffy, and so many moms can relate to what Holmes is feeling as her little girl is little no more.

Suri cruise enrolled in new school: $40,000 a year 'avenues' in chelsea, nyc.

Suri Cruise has been enrolled in a new school, new reports have claimed.

Katie Holmes will have been concerned about where to put her daughter for first grade following her divorce from Suri's father, Tom Cruise, and it seems she has chosen Avenues, a private school in the Chelsea district of New York City.

It had been previously thought that Suri had been enrolled in a prestigious Catholic School in Manhattan. Sources had claimed that Katie Holmes had signed her daughter up to join the Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic School. But it now appears she has opted for Avenues in Chelsea, NYC.

An Avenues' World spokesperson has refused to talk about potential new students, explaining to E! News, "It is our policy not to comment on any prospective or current student, parent and family members."

Avenues is located on 10th Avenue in the Landmark District of Chelsea. The school can be found in a historic building alongside New York's High Line. The campus is extravagant and these six year olds in first grade will certainly not go wanting.

The school prides itself on being an international institution, and is building up its New York campus as its flagship campus. The school has plans to build dozens more campuses in more than 20 cities across the world in key locations, so that traveling families can take their kids along with them as they globe trot and find a nearby school to make sure their kids keep up. Potential campuses are touted for Europe, India, Africa, the Middle East, the Pacific Rim and Central America.

The tuition at the school will be in excess of $40,000, but will include the cost of books and materials, as well as all field trips and transportation. However, those extraordinarily expensive books mean that the initial tuition fee does not cover snacks and uniform. Parents will be asked to pay an extra $2,000 as a mandatory payment for lunch, snacks, athletic uniforms and educational technology investments.

Avenues is a uniform school and so Suri will not be able to don clothes from her multi-million dollar wardrobe.

Suri Cruise's Potential New School: Everything You Need to Know

Rumors swirl that katie holmes enrolled 6-year-old suri in the posh private institution, find out more.

E! Placeholder Image

The summer's coming to a close for the hottest 6-year-old in NYC!

And while we're a bit sad this probably means Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise 's endless daytime outings are about to dwindle (you know, at the museum , the gymnastics store and even the pet shop ), all eyes have shifted to exactly where Suri will tote her stylish backpack for the first day of first grade.

Although we initially had a strong source tell us Suri would be attending Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic School, the latest report suggests Katie has enrolled her daughter in Avenues , a posh private institution located in the Chelsea district of NYC.

Katie and Suri get sporty in NYC!

When asked for comment, the Avenues' World spokesperson told E! News, "It is our policy not to comment on any prospective or current student, parent and family members."

So perhaps Holmes is trying to steer away the relentless paparazzi or maybe she's had a change of heart. But either way, Suri has to learn how to walk on her own two feet , so here's everything you need to know about the young star's transition to the big-girl world:

Killer Locay: And you thought Columbia University was the place to be! Avenues' New York flagship campus is located on Tenth Avenue, in a historic building in the Landmark District of Chelsea, adjacent to NYC's High Line. It's culturally rich location ensures that the 6-year-old will have loads of field-trip opportunities and chances to explore NYC (lucky girl!). Just take a virtual tour of the stunning campus, and you might feel a twinge of jealousy that you're not heading back to elementary school.

Going Global: Avenues is committed to becoming an international institution. Once its flagship campus in NYC is completed, Avenues plans to build campuses in 20 or more cities all over the world including India, Africa, Central America, the Middle East, the Pacific Rim and the United States. Sounds like a perfect solution for the world traveling six-year-old, right? Avenues' international program gives Suri the chance to travel with her dad and stay in school.

See Suri's puppy dog eyes!

$$$: Get ready to shell out some serious cash if you want an Avenues' education! Although the final number is not official, the tuition for the 2013-2014 school year will be in the $40,000 dollar ballpark. Tuition includes the full cost of books and materials, all field trips and transportation to and from activities during the school day that are part of the academic program. Another $2,000 in mandatory fees covers lunch, snacks, athletic uniforms and annual investments in educational technology.

No Special Treatment: Despite Suri's famous fam, her last name won't earn her a free ticket to enrollment. In the opening year, each student is given an equal opportunity for acceptance. But in the subsequent years, there will be special consideration for siblings of previously enrolled students. As for the type of students the school is seeking? Avenues' website states that they expect students to have diverse interests and talents, as well as a unique background. Sounds like a fabulous fit for the savvy six-year-old!

How Much Does It Cost to Be Suri Cruise?

Advanced Coursework: Suri will enroll in the Lower Curriculum school, where a formal modern language immersion program in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish will be introduced. She'll also take classes in humanities, literacy, math, science, the arts and physical education. Talk about a well-rounded education!

Not So Fashionista Friendly: Despite Suri's affinity for dresses and high heels, she'll have to don a uniform during her days at Avenues. Students are required to wear a loose fitting blouse or turtleneck bearing the Avenues' logo along with gray or black pants, skirts, jumpers or shorts. A bonus? Any color accessories can be worn, so Mama Holmes, break out those Avenues-inspired hair bows! We know a uniform won't stop Suri from flashing her A-list style.

Suri Cruise's first day of school in New York

September 12, 2012 / 2:11 PM EDT / ET Online

(ETonline) It's a milestone for any child, and Suri Cruise is no different - on Tuesday the 6-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes arrived at a New York City private school for her first day of school.

Like many other little girls on their first day of school, photos showed Suri wearing a pink bow in her hair and clutching a pink backpack.

Following her parents split in June, Suri has been spotted frequently this summer enjoying activities in New York City with her mom Katie, like going to musuems, the zoo, riding bikes and playing in parks. She also visited Disney World with dad Tom.

Suri Cruise starts her first great adventure, school!

The daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes started her first day at New York’s newest private school today.

Suri Cruise starts her first great adventure, school!

Suri Cruise may be the world’s most famous 6-year old, but she was feeling much like any other first-grader on Tuesday morning, as she embarked on her most nerve-wracking adventure - her first day of school.

Accompanied by her mother Katie Holmes, the youngster arrived holding onto her pink school bag tightly, and wearing a coordinating pink bow, reported Enterntainmentwise . The little fashionista was sporting a grey cardigan and white shirt, as the Avenues uniform policy has asked its pupils to stick to white, grey and black.

Suri was seen biting her nails through the tinted window of her SUV as she and her actress mom arrived at the posh Avenues School in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood. [See the picture here >

It is the first time Suri, who has so far been educated at home, will attend school and according to sources she is “really excited” to start.

Katie and Suri were driven to school in a large gray SUV, but there was no sign of Tom Cruise.  RadarOnline had previously reported that the recently divorced couple were planning on setting aside their differences so they could both be there for Suri’s big day. But that did not seem to happen.

Enrolling her at Avenues, and not a Scientology school or home education, is part of Katie Holmes’ attempt to give Suri a ’normal life’ following the star’s divorce from Tom Cruise.

Katie Holmes and her doppelgänger daughter, Suri Cruise, popped out for a cheerful stroll in New York City on Monday.

The “Dawson’s Creek” alum, 45, and the 17-year-old looked strikingly alike as they walked side by side in the buzzy Soho neighborhood with smiles on their faces.

Holmes looked laid-back in an oversize denim jacket layered over a red sweater and black trousers. She accessorized with white sneakers, sunglasses, a chunky statement necklace and a soft leather black tote by Mansur Gavriel , which retails for $795.

The teenager, who is nearly as tall as her 5-foot-9 mom, went with light-wash bootcut jeans, beat-up brown cowboy boots and a stunning Maje Western-style shearling coa t ( $2,695 $1347).

She also carried a worn-out brown leather crossbody decorated with two lions.

The look-alike mother-daughter duo appeared to enjoy their day out together, as they were seen laughing and gabbing while making their way down the pavement.

Passersby did not seem to recognize the actress or her child, whom she shares with her ex-husband Tom Cruise.

Holmes and Suri rarely step out together, though they got all gussied up to celebrate the “First Daughter” star’s 45th birthday in December.

The high school student clearly loves celebrating her mom, as she was also seen buying Holmes a bouquet of flowers for Mother’s Day last May.

And the feeling is mutual for Holmes, who gushed about how much she loves spending time with Suri in 2019.

“I feel very blessed to have such a special daughter. Being her mom is absolutely the greatest gift and privilege,” she told Shape magazine at the time. “Sometimes I work out with my daughter. It just depends on the day.”

Suri seems to want to follow in her parents’ footsteps and chase a career in acting. Page Six exclusively reported in December that the teen landed a lead role in her school’s play .

We’re told she played Morticia Addams in “The Addams Family: A New Musical,” with one audience member calling Suri’s performance “amazing.”

The Hollywood scion is believed to be estranged from her father , who was married to Holmes from 2006 to 2012.

Katie Holmes

A source told Page Six last year that the “Top Gun: Maverick” star, 61, has not seen Suri in a very long time and is not a part of her life.

Tom — who was previously married to Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001 and Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990 — is reportedly now in a serious relationship with Russian socialite Elsina Khayrova .

How two girls tell two different stories about growing up in NYC

In West Chelsea, on 26th Street and 10th Avenue, two worlds intersect.

On one side of the street is Avenues, a 6-year-old, über-elite, $50,000-a-year private school attended by the likes of Suri Cruise and the offspring of tech millionaires.

On the other side is the Chelsea-Elliot public housing projects, home to thousands of residents, many of whom live below the poverty line. A new documentary, “Class Divide,” premiering Monday on HBO , delves into the disparate worlds just across the street from one another — and the children who inhabit each of them.

“The kids in the projects don’t want to just be hemmed in . . . And the Avenues kids feel that they don’t want to just be living in a gilded cage . . . even if the bars are gold,” the doc’s director, Marc Levin, tells The Post. “They don’t want to live in segregated worlds.”

Two young women who appear in the film — Isabella Simonetti, a senior at Avenues, and 10-year-old Rosa DeSantiago, who is growing up in the projects — talked to The Post about their daily lives.

Rosa, age 10: Sixth-grader at Guardian Angel parochial school in Chelsea

I live in the Chelsea-Elliot projects, which has six apartment buildings and runs from 25th to 27th Street and from Ninth to Tenth Avenue. The best part of growing up in the projects is that you learn how to live as a poor child. The bad thing is, you suffer a lot and you see a lot of things you’re not supposed to see at this age. Like shootouts and all that stuff. We lost a good friend of ours a long time ago, Dante. It was really sad. Thank God I’m on the 20th floor, so I don’t see it, only hear it. But I feel safe. My mom has been living there for 25 years with my three brothers. Our family doesn’t do trouble. Ain’t nobody going to touch me.

Six months ago, I moved to the Bronx part-time with my dad, who is on disability since he got shot in the leg many years ago. He hasn’t worked in a while. He has so much pain, but he can also tell when it’s going to rain! I split my time between his one-bedroom apartment and my mom’s two-bedroom apartment in the projects. At my dad’s, there’s a curtain in the bedroom and there’s my side of the room — which is bigger, obviously — and his side of the room. At my mom’s, I sleep in bed with her. When I’m in the Bronx, I wake up at 5:30 or 6 a.m. to my cell’s alarm clock, and have a granola bar or a croissant with an Ensure.

suri cruise nyc school

I’m in sixth grade at the Guardian Angel School, a Catholic school in Chelsea that goes until the eighth grade. [Editor’s note: Tuition is $4,385 a year and Rosa receives partial scholarships.] I’ve been in Catholic school since I was in kindergarten. I like it. Not to be mean, but the majority of kids in public school, they’re not on the same level as me. My three older brothers went to public school, and my mom says it was a bad experience. It was really important to her that I get a better education. I wanted to go to Avenues for a while, but not anymore. I don’t feel like the kids are going to be like me.

‘My three older brothers went to public school, and my mom says it was a bad experience … I wanted to go to Avenues for a while, but not anymore. I don’t feel like the kids are going to be like me.’  - Rosa

To get to school from my dad’s, I usually take the 6 train express from Parkchester to 125th, then transfer to the 4 or 5, then back to the 6, and get the E train at 51st Street and take it to 23rd Street and walk to school. It takes me about an hour. My dad comes with me. When I stay at my mom’s, I can sleep in until 7:15 a.m., which is nice.

All my classes are hard, but I really like math; we’re learning about ratios now. In social studies, I’m learning about Greek mythology, and in science, I’m learning about the cells of the body.

My mom works as a nursing assistant in an addiction center. She doesn’t make that much, so I qualify for free lunch. Today I had chicken and fries with water.

My uniform is a plaid skirt, a white blouse and sweater. You can wear acrylic nails, but you can’t wear them long. After school, my parents give me money to grab a slice of pizza and a soda. Then I go to the city library on 23rd and Seventh and do my homework. At 5 p.m., my dad comes to take me home on the train. Sometimes I play basketball with kids in the Bronx — my school doesn’t have sports — after doing my homework.

suri cruise nyc school

We usually get takeout dinner from a Spanish place or cook soup or rice and beans and steak. We don’t go to restaurants, because they’re too expensive. After dinner, I watch Netflix on my cellphone in my room. My dad pays for my phone — everyone has one these days! I’ve had one since I was like 7 years old. I love “Vampire Diaries,” “Orange Is the New Black” and “Pretty Little Liars.” I fast-forward through the parts I’m not supposed to watch. I’ll read Percy Jackson books or comics, too. I’m not a kid who likes to be on my phone 24/7 because it’s unhealthy for the brain. I usually go to bed around 10. If I have a lot of homework, around 11.

I want to be a neurosurgeon when I grow up. I’m going to graduate from Columbia University. Oh my God, let me tell you girl, the first thing I’m going to do when I graduate from Columbia is party with my friends. It’s going to be a celebration! It’s going to be hyped. The second thing I’m going to do is thank my mom and dad for all they’ve done for me — especially my mom, who works so hard to help pay for my school.

Isabella, age 17: Senior at Avenues private school in Chelsea

I’ve been at Avenues since the eighth grade. Before that, I went to the Clinton School for Writers and Artists, a public school you have to test into. It’s near Union Square, but it used to be in Hell’s Kitchen when I went there.

I’m an only child and live with my dad, a lawyer who works for Reuters as a legal writer and editor. We have a two-bedroom apartment in the West Village. My mom passed away eight years ago; she was a law professor.

I decided to go to Avenues because there was no public school I really wanted to go to or was that passionate about. Public schools are different — they’re a much larger environment. Here, I get a much more personal education, which is good for me, and I’m lucky that my family can afford it.

‘Everyone at Avenues is pretty well-off, but there are some people who wear that on their sleeve and brag about wearing designer clothes.’  - Isabella

I usually wake up at 6:40 a.m. by alarm and grab a bagel on my way to school. I take the E train to Avenues by myself. It’s about 30 minutes. I’ve heard other people say their parents tell them to walk on the other side of the street from the projects when heading to school, but I’ve never been told that.

I’m taking a journalism class this year as an elective, and I really like that. I’m also taking a modern Middle Eastern history class that’s interesting.

Starting in the 11th grade, you’re allowed to go out for lunch — we have a badge system at school where you badge in and out — but I usually just eat in the cafeteria. Lunch is part of our tuition. We eat a lot of potatoes. I don’t know why, maybe they’re cheap! Sometimes it’s hamburgers and french fries. There’s always a salad bar, but I usually make myself a sandwich.

We have a dress code, not a uniform — you have to wear black and white and whatever accessories you want. They’re not as strict as they used to be. I normally wear black jeans and a white button-down shirt.

Everyone at Avenues is pretty well-off, but there are some people who wear that on their sleeve and brag about wearing designer clothes, and how they take private cars to school every day, and their apartments, and their houses in the Hamptons. There are other people who are more humble. When you go to Avenues, if you’re upper-middle class you can seem poor to some people, so it skews your perspective a bit.

School for seniors gets out at 2:15 p.m. I go to cross-country practice for the Avenues team on the West Side Highway, Monday through Thursday. It ends at 4:45, and then I go back to school and do my homework. Sometimes my teachers will stay after school, so if I have questions I can ask them. I also work on the school newspaper, the Highliner, which I founded in the 10th grade.

I take the train back home around 6 p.m. and do more work. I usually have between three and four hours of homework a day. My dad and I eat dinner around 8 p.m. We usually order in sushi from Japonica, a Japanese restaurant near our apartment, or get prepared meals from Whole Foods. I’ll do some more homework after, and FaceTime with my friends or iMessage them on my computer.

‘Even if I get into my first-choice college, I’m sure I’ll find something else to be stressed out about.’  - Isabella

When my homework is done, I watch TV on my computer, a Macbook Air, which all Avenues students get on loan. I usually watch silly shows like “Gilmore Girls” because it just helps me not think. I also knit. I just started knitting a scarf. My friends make fun of me for doing it.

I’m probably going to apply to the University of Pennsylvania, early decision, but I’m not really sure. A lot of people at my school tend to keep their top choices private, because it can be so competitive. They don’t want people gossiping about whether they did or didn’t get into a certain school.

I’d say the hardest part of the college process for me, at least, was the standardized testing, because our school doesn’t really prepare us for that. At Avenues, we’re more focused on “process” versus “final answer,” whereas standardized testing is just “final answer,” and that’s unfortunately a big part of the admissions decision. It took me a lot of effort and time to end up getting a good score.

A lot of people think once you get into a good college, you’re set, but that’s not the case. Even if I get into my first-choice college, I’m sure I’ll find something else to be stressed out about.

My dream job would be to do travel writing. I’d like to start my own publication. I’m not personally concerned with being as good as my parents or being better than them. I’m more concerned with being able to do what I want to do and do it well.

I think going to public school when I was younger gave me some perspective — I don’t think I’d want to send my kids to Avenues from kindergarten onward. But that depends [on whether] it changes at all — if it becomes more diversified or remains the same.

I’d love to see Avenues increase the financial aid that is given out and open up the school more to the community. When the documentary was filming, I met a few kids from the Chelsea-Elliot housing projects and showed them around our school. I know if I were in their position, I would be frustrated. But they weren’t resentful. They were just open and honest.

Suri Cruise's Valentine's Day Behavior Has Us Wondering About Her Love Life

Suri Cruise smiling

While many of us were making it through the mid-work week slump of Valentine's Day 2024, Suri Cruise was offering a nostalgic reminder of what it feels like to be young, carefree, and giddily happy — even on a Wednesday. The only daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise was spotted walking the streets of New York City on Valentine's Day, clad in denim and flashing her and Holmes' signature smile while looking at her phone.

Although it's unclear what Suri was looking at on her iPhone, her reaction was plain as day. Untroubled and unbothered, she was photographed wearing a gleeful, open smile as she navigated the NYC sidewalk. Given the holiday in question and that Suri is quickly growing into an independent teen, we couldn't help but wonder if her joy was Valentine-related.

Whether the cause of her toothy grin was romantic, platonic, or something as innocuous as a hilarious meme or TikTok video, it's clear that Suri wasn't letting any hump day blues get her down this Valentine's Day.

Suri Cruise has come a long way from the media frenzied days of her childhood

As the only daughter of two A-list actors, Suri Cruise is no stranger to the media. The constant news circulating Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's highly publicized marriage and tumultuous divorce thrust Suri into the spotlight even in utero. But she's come a long way since then. Well into her late teens and growing more independent by the day, it won't be long before the young girl we used to see tagging along behind Holmes is a full-fledged adult.

Holmes acknowledged this inevitable transition in a 2017 Town & Country interview, saying, "Every day, kids get a little further away from you. That's a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it's heartbreaking. You want them to stay with you forever, but they're these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they're going to go. And that's going to be very, very sad for me."

Still, it sounds like Holmes can rest easy knowing she's raised her daughter to be compassionate, strong, and hard-working. It's also clear that Suri has inherited her parents' artistic genes, having already built an impressive portfolio collaborating with Holmes for projects she's directed . While we wait to see what great things are in store for Suri, we can't help but feel happy for her happiness so heartwarmingly expressed this Valentine's Day.

Katie has also discussed her daughter and the importance of motherhood on various occasions. "The most important thing for me is letting her know how proud I am and that her accomplishments mean everything,” she said on The Today Show . "Whatever I do is whatever. It's really just about her and that's what I think is most important."
