Nova Scotia Distilleries Map

Below are individual Nova Scotia Distilleries map regions of the province. While enjoying the natural scenery of the Province you will  also be taken on a Spirited Trip while enjoying local liquors including whiskey, gin, vodka and rum, etc.

The process of making distilled spirits starts off much of the same as making beer. Starting with combining some basic ingredients such as grains, yeast & water. Of course each product’s recipe varies. The grains breakdown and convert the starches to sugars. With the help of the yeast and enzymes the sugar is converted into alcohol. This is where the similarity ends between beer and distilled spirits. Once the yeast and sugar has done their jobs producers off the spent grains. The remaining liquid is pour it into the still. Alcohol’s boiling point is lower than water so it vaporizes first. It is then condensing by cooling the vapor, and collecting the resulting liquid commonly known as alcohol.

Annapolis Valley

Eastern shore & halifax, south shore & yarmouth, northumberland shore & truro, cape breton island, distilleries in the annapolis valley.

As the saying goes, “a rising tide lifts all boats.” The Annapolis Valley distillery has partnered with 12 local farmers and producers for the fruits and coffee in their line of liqueurs. Barrelling Tide Distillery has been lauded with numerous awards, including multiple gold medals at the 2019 Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition.

Nova Scotia distilleries are consistently raising their collective game to new levels. No longer novelties in the Canadian spirits landscape; they’re carving out a well-defined niche in the spirit and liqueur world. Rhubarb gin, chili pepper vodka—there’s no limit to the growing local innovation.

A number of these distillers are driven by a commitment to producing authentic, locally distilled spirits, many of which make a tireless commitment to use as many Nova Scotia-sourced ingredients as possible. Not only are they winning over local customers, Nova Scotia distilleries are also receiving recognition by national and international critics.

  • Halifax Distilling Co.

Distilleries on the South Shore & Yarmouth

Their spirits are truly artisanal, having been made with a “field to glass” approach or, perhaps better said, an “orchard to glass” method. Ironworks is made from Annapolis Valley grown apples, representing a growing trend in the global vodka category to use non-traditional base ingredients such as grapes and orchard fruit. They also produce gin, liqueurs and dark rum.

Distilleries on the Northumberland Shore & Truro

Nova Scotia spirits reflective of their north-shore landscape. Local distilleries use Canadian rye grown in the dense, dark clay soils found in this part of Nova Scotia. The coolness of climate and soil provides rye that contributes intense, spicy aromas to their whisky, a quality prized by rye whisky aficionados. The Nova Scotian distilleries also have the advantage of using the local hard water, instead of treated water, uniquely Nova Scotian.

Distilleries in Cape Breton Island

In 1989, Glenora Distillery became Nova Scotia’s first artisanal spirit producer, simultaneously earning the exclusive title of North America’s first single malt whisky distillery. Located in Cape Breton, the distillery produces multi-award-winning whiskies including its flagship Glen Breton Rare Single Malt whisky. The distillery is also becoming equally celebrated for its Smuggler’s Cove Rum.

The spirits of Lunenburg

Ironworks is a micro-distillery located in the old port of Lunenburg on Nova Scotia’s historic South Shore. We take our name from the 1893 heritage building we call home: a marine blacksmith’s shop that once produced ironworks for the shipbuilding trade.

One batch at a time

We craft our spirits with the same love of traditional methods and attention to detail. To see what we’re up to, have a look around our site. Or even better, drop by our distillery shop when you're in the neighbourhood.

Nova Scotia

Glenora Distillery became Nova Scotia’s first artisanal producer in 1989 with a single malt whisky. Since that time, and much like the Province’s growing winery and brewery sectors, other distilleries have joined the industry. Following a time-honoured tradition of quality and creativity has resulted in an enticing array of distilled spirits including whiskies, rums, vodkas, gins, as well as cocktails and liqueurs. So start exploring and start enjoying!
