17 unforgettable African safaris

Set off into the wild and see the world like never before with this guide to the best experiences in 11 countries.

Chobe National Park in Botswana holds one of Africa’s largest elephant populations.

What images come to mind when you hear the words “African safari”? Sitting in the bush on a moonlit night, so close to a lion that you can feel the rumble of its roar in your chest?

Many travelers might conjure up visions of tented camps, gourmet meals under a baobab tree, game drives through golden savanna, and sundowners at the end of the day. But safaris can also involve self-guided rental cars , game walks, and fly-fishing. Safaris can be as varied as the continent of Africa itself.

One recent trend: expeditions that enlist travelers in the fight to save endangered wildlife. Tourists make a difference by joining rhino or lion conservationists at work in South Africa or accompanying researchers working on a chimpanzee habituation project in Kibale National Park in Uganda . ( Read about the dark truth behind wildlife tourism. )

No matter where you go and what type of safari you choose, timing is key. Once you’ve narrowed your options, look into the best time to visit. South Africa’s summer (December through February), for example, is prime safari season in that region. You’ll still see wildlife if you go during South Africa’s winter (June through August), but pack a jacket, as temperatures can be chilly, especially before the sun rises.

Set off into the wild and see the world like never before with our guide to top safari experiences in 11 African countries.

a map of Southern Africa

Spot animals in these natural wonders.

South Africa

Kruger National Park: South Africa ’s largest game reserve, Kruger National Park makes a perfect home base for self-guided and first-time safaris. Stay in one of the park’s fenced camps, such as the Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp on the northern bank of the Crocodile River. Head into the bush early to explore the Southern Circle, famous for its competing lion prides and their varied hunting practices. Don’t miss the nearby hippo pool, but be sure to stay in your car outside of the camp. ( Take a solo safari through South Africa’s wild grasslands. )

Hazyview: Not far from Kruger’s southwestern Phabeni Gate, Hazyview is a family-friendly hub for horseback safaris, zip-lining, safari golf, and trout fishing. Check in to one of the lodges, such as Hippo Hollow Country Estate , and then head out into the Kruger before sunrise on a self-guided game drive to scout lions and white rhinos. Break for lunch in the town of Skukuza.

Timbavati Private Nature Reserve: The rugged Timbavati is one of the private nature reserves that make up the greater Kruger area. Guests can choose from eight lodges there. An upscale chalet at fence-free Simbavati Safari Lodges , for example, is perfect for families. Wake up early for game drives, perhaps to search for African wild dogs . Mid-morning, kids head into the bush for a scavenger hunt with a guide.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve: Animals aren’t the only sights to track on safari. In South Africa’s Western Cape region, wildflowers provide the dazzle. The two lodges at Grootbos , part of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World , sit amid the smallest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, home to some 800 plant species. Watch for sharks and southern right whales from your suite’s deck. ( See the world’s best places for flowers. )

wildflowers in Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, located in South Africa

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, located in South Africa’s Western Cape, offers a "flower safari" to guests.

Hlane Royal National Park: Head to Swaziland , a country landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique , to see Hlane ’s fiercely protected rhinos and marabou storks. Stay in one of the park’s two lodges, Ndlovu Camp or Bhubesi, and enjoy self-guided drives on the safe game-viewing roads that crisscross the park’s flat terrain. Spot lions, hyenas, giraffes, and vulturess, then picnic at the Mahlindza water hole.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve: Black-maned Kalahari lions roam this reserve in central Botswana . Stay just north of the reserve at Deception Valley Lodge , where you can watch magical sunsets dip into the horizon from the deck of your chalet.

Chobe National Park: To the north of Central Kalahari, Chobe National Park is home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations. And Chobe Game Lodge boasts the only all-female safari guide team in Africa. ( Meet the all-female anti-poaching unit saving rhinos and other wildlife. )

Elephants enjoy a sunny day in Botswana’s Chobe National Park.

Hwange National Park: All aboard the Elephant Express to tour the Ngamo Forest Area and Hwange National Park, known for its pachyderms and 400-plus species of birds. The two-hour safari rail trip is easily accessible to Imvelo Safari Lodges’ Bomani Tented Lodge or Camelthorn Lodge . Check out the game-viewing underground hide at nearby Stoffie’s Pan. North from Hwange, a four-hour drive or a one-hour flight gets you to regal Victoria Falls, a thundering natural wonder you can hear long before you first catch sight of it.

Mana Pools National Park: Try a river-based safari in a kayak at this remote park. The best time to go may be in April, when large herds of elephants, buffalo, kudu, and the elusive eland return to the four (or mana in the local language) large permanent pools along the south bank of the Zambezi River after the rainy season. Accommodations in the park include lodges, thatched chalets, and campsites.

Namib Desert: A safari here means brilliant stargazing, silky sand, age-old views, and resilient desert animals such as oryx, bat-eared foxes, Burchell’s zebras, and loads of lizards. Stay at & Beyond’s Sossusvlei Desert Lodge , located at the desert’s eastern edge. Explore the Namib dunes on a quad bike, and hike a craggy slope to see ancient rock paintings in a nearby cave, making sure to pack water, a hat, and sunscreen. ( See eerie photos of a Namibian ghost town. )

Gorongosa National Park: Located in central Mozambique , Gorongosa has been brought back to life after suffering the devastations of many years of civil conflict. Today, when you visit, you become a part of one of Africa’s most successful wildlife restoration stories. Home to floodplains and preserved palm forests, Gorongosa has an amazing diversity of wildlife, from antelope to primates and huge Nile crocodiles, as well as lions, elephants, and hippos.

A female crocodile guards her nest of eggs beside the Mussicadzi River in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park.

Selous Game Reserve: Visit this off-the-beaten-track and tranquil reserve in southern Tanzania for walking safaris and traditional game drives. Then cruise the Rufiji River to watch for elephants, hippos, lions, leopards, and brindled gnu. Stay at Beho Beho , a hilltop lodge that also has secluded tree-house accommodations for the extra adventurous.

Serengeti National Park: At Asilia’s Namiri Plains camp in northern Tanzania, visitors become part of the migration as they travel in a luxury mobile camp alongside herds of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles. Walking safaris get you closer to the action, with veteran Serengeti safari guides giving the play-by-play. The animals—often stalked by big predators, such as lions and cheetahs—follow one of Earth’s most ancient routes. And if you come too close to an animal, never run. Move away quietly.

Olare Motorogi Conservancy: Cross the border from Tanzania into southern Kenya for an iconic East African lodge experience at the Mara Plains Camp. About a 2.5-hour drive from the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve, the eco-friendly camp was built by National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert with their partners at Great Plains Conservation . From camp, you’ll head out on safari to watch migrating zebras and wildebeests make exciting and risky river crossings. You may even see a few big cats. ( Experience an air safari through Kenya. )

A lioness takes in the view of Kenya's Olare Motorogi Conservancy.

Ragati Conservancy: Kenya may be a great place to see the migrations, but it’s also a surprisingly fantastic spot for fly-fishing. On the southern slopes of Mount Kenya (Africa’s second highest peak), the Ragati Conservancy has mountain streams stocked with glistening rainbow trout. What makes the Ragati worth the trip? Nat Geo photographer and fly fisherman Pete Muller says that while Idaho fishing is amazing, “anglers won’t encounter an elephant along the Lochsa!” Fishing in Kenya, he says, also gives fishing enthusiasts the chance to visit locations such as Aberdare National Park.

Rwanda/Uganda

Volcanoes National Park/kalinzu Forest Reserve: Rwanda ’s Volcanoes National Park allows a limited number of visitors per day to hike into the jungle to view endangered mountain gorillas up close, as they groom each other, play, and eat bamboo shoots and fruits. Keep your eyes open for golden monkeys too. Nat Geo Expeditions offers an itinerary that includes a gorilla trek, then heads north into Uganda for a chimpanzee trek through the lush Kalinzu Forest Reserve near Queen Elizabeth National Park. ( Here’s how to visit the endangered mountain gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda. )

Zakouma National Park: Intense wildlife experiences await at this park known for the number of animals that make it their home. A herd of more than 500 elephants and flocks of birds, such as the black-crowned crane, in the tens of thousands, congregate here. Zakouma had a tremendous comeback after enduring civil unrest in the region. Visit between December and April, and stay at traditional Camp Nomade, its tents decorated with local carpets and brass bells.

Definition of a Driven Hunt

Usually accompanying the cull hunt. Hunters are put out in specific strategic positions in the direction where the animals are anticipated to move. Once hunters are put into position the animals are moved either by horseback, pick-up or foot.

Definition of a Fair Chase or Walk and Stalk Hunt

Mainly accompanying the trophy hunt, animals are spotted and a plan is put in place to get into a preferable shooting position/distance by foot, for the hunter to make a safe and confident kill shot. This method can take hours to execute but the rewards are definitely worth it.

I visited 5 of the best safari parks in Africa. The trip was filled with surprises, and there are a few things I wish I'd known before leaving.

  • I visited five of Kenya's best safari parks to see some of  Africa's most famous animals in the wild.
  • There were many aspects of the safari that surprised me despite the research I did before my trip.
  • I was surprised by many things, including how long I spent sitting in safari cars.

Insider Today

Seeing some of Africa's most famous animals in the wild has been on my bucket list for years. With adventure travel on the rise, I decided to take the plunge and make the 20+ hour flight to Africa to visit some of Kenya's best safari parks.

Masai Mara is arguably the most famous for big-cat sightings, but Amboseli National Park , Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, Nairobi National Park, and Hell's Gate National Park are also must-see reserves teeming with wildlife.

I did lots of research beforehand but found I was unprepared for many things I experienced while on safari — and there are things I'll definitely do differently the next time I go.

From what I should have worn to what seeing the animals was really like, here's what surprised me most about going on safari in Kenya.

I sat in the safari vehicle for about 8 hours every day

Between a morning and afternoon game drive, I spent about eight hours in the car daily. It was shocking to see the low number of daily steps on my Oura ring.

I started doing yoga at the end of the night to loosen up my hips. My airplane pillow also helped me stay comfortable, especially during the seven-hour drives to other parks.

My shoes were off for most of the drives

In hindsight, I should have worn sandals on my drives. Most safari vehicles have small windows and a top that lifts up, and you're frequently standing on the chairs to get a better view.

We took off our shoes when we got into the car so we were ready to hop up on the chairs at a moment's notice.

I had lots of early mornings and bedtimes.

The best times for safaris are in the mornings and at dusk, and sometimes, we had 4 a.m. start times. The lack of sleep , paired with the heat, made me eager to get to bed early.

Related stories

I'm not a morning person, but I preferred the early drives for the animal activity (and incredible sunrises) we saw. We used the less-ideal safari hours during the day to nap, do other activities in the area, or drive to other parks.

Many animals can be difficult to spot due to distance or camouflage

We had our fair share of close-up sightings, but many of the animals we wanted to see were far away and sometimes not immediately obvious to the naked eye.

We ditched our iPhones and used binoculars and someone's camera viewfinder to get a closer look.

A pair of binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are essential for getting the best view (and pictures) possible.

There were long periods of time with minimal animal sightings

Safari drives can be frustrating because you can't control what animals you'll see, how far away they are, and how long the sighting will last. But being patient can be rewarding.

During one dusk drive, we spent three hours searching for a pride of lions without any luck. Finally, as the sun set in the last half hour, we stumbled upon three female lions napping, a leopard, and giraffes.

Many of the animals are sleeping during the day

I expected to see animals moving around or hunting, but many were resting during the day. It was only when dusk approached that they started to slowly stake out a spot by the grazing herds.

If I go on safari again, I'll book a night drive so I can see how the lions and other animals act during their peak hours of activity.

My view was largely out of my control

Whenever a less common animal like a lion or cheetah is spotted, a traffic jam of safari vehicles speed over and line up, vying for the best view.

What you see — and sometimes, if you see anything at all — can depend on your driver and what vantage point they can get.

Your view can also depend on your position in the car. I spent a lot of time scrambling around to catch a sighting (and a photo, if I was lucky).

Prey is plentiful, but seeing any action is unlikely

Gazelles and impalas were everywhere, so it was surprising to learn that the lions might not eat for days.

Our driver told us the best thing he's seen on safari was a cheetah hunting a gazelle, and then a pride of lions swooping in to steal his meal. However, these kinds of sightings are rare.

Predators need to consider everything from the direction the wind is blowing to the length of the grass when trying to sneak up on their prey. Many hunts are unsuccessful, so seeing one in person is unlikely.

Scavengers in Africa – The Savannah’s Clean-up Crew

Africa’s scavengers are a keystone species on its vast grasslands. These fascinating creatures clean up the savannah and prevent disease from spreading. We explore key scavenger species and their threats…

Scavengers often get a bad rep – portrayed as conniving, thieving, greedy creatures that feast on the misfortune of other animals. However, many of the scavengers in Africa are keystone species crucial to their environment.

Close-up of hyenas tearing up a carcass

They do the essential work of cleaning up the savannah, preventing the build-up of rotting bodies on the grassland. This “clean up” is especially important during the season of the great wildebeest migration, as thousands of grazers die along the way. Without the scavengers of the savannah, rotting carcasses would spread bacteria and other pathogens to wild animals, livestock and humans.

A Typical Scene of Scavengers Around a Carcass

The marabou stork looked up from the feast in front of it. With its bald head, spotted neck, and legs crusted with its own feces, it isn’t the most celebrated of creatures. Neither are the other animals whose company it keeps.

Hyenas around a carcass and vultures waiting their turn

Around the carcass of the gnu, a fresh lion kill made in the pre-dawn hours, a stunning variety of African scavengers have gathered. At the top of the food chain are the hyenas, who themselves have their hierarchy.

Hyena snarling at a white-backed vulture

Waiting on the outer ring are the leatherback vultures, jostling out the marabou stork, who stands near the prize but is prevented from dipping into it by the hyenas. Instead, it waits for bits to fly off during the frenzy and catches them as they come.

A black-backed jackal looking at a hyena

The only creatures which can be said to have some charm are the petite black-backed jackals, who hunt as a mating pair. Low in stature, crowded out by the hyenas and overshadowed by the birds, they circle the carcass opportunistically, hoping for their moment to drive in and grab a piece.

Evidence of a Healthy Ecosystem

We can easily witness such a scene on the plains of the Masai Mara. Often, it is more likely we see the result of a hunt, rather than the hunt itself. After all, hunts happen in a flash, as most predators on the African savannah rely on surprise rather than endurance to snag prey. Most kills take place within a matter of minutes.

A dead hyena being eaten by vultures and marabou storks

However, consumption of the entire carcass by both predators and scavengers do not take a long time either. Nature is surprisingly efficient, attending to the cycle of life. Out on the Masai Mara, we watched how an assortment of scavengers in Africa stripped down a carcass in under an hour.

Lower-ranked hyenas continue to munch on the ribs of the carcass

Hierarchy of Scavengers in Africa

Observing scavengers consume a carcass completely was a fascinating activity. It revealed how each animal at the banquet table has its niche. It also showed how, in nature, there is always order among chaos.

Hyena running off with hoof of wildebeest, another hyena is in pursuit

Hyenas are at the top of the food chain when it comes to consuming fallen prey animals. If there are hyenas in the area of a carcass, you can bet they will be the first ones there. Of the scavengers on the Masai Mara, they are the biggest, meanest, and most aggressive. They are also one of the most important species on the savannah and the great recycle bins of the African grassland.

Their jaws can crunch through bone, which their stomach acids are capable of digesting. We can see evidence of this in their poo – when it’s fresh, it is green, the colour of their digestive juices. Once the excrement dries, it turns white, the result of the high calcium content in their diet due to consuming bone.

Hyena rolling in the grass

After the hyenas usually come the lappet-face vultures, one of the longest winged vultures on the African savannah. Quite often, the vultures get to a carcass before the hyenas. When this happens, it’s usually up to the lappet-faced vulture to tear upon the skin of the dead animal. Only then can the other scavenging birds get to the meat.

Marabou Storks

Then, there are the Marabou storks. These creatures usually wait on the fringes of the frenzy as the hyenas squabble among themselves and tear apart bone and flesh. While the chaos is ongoing, bits of meat often fly out onto the perimeter of the buffet. The Marabou stork stands in wait on the outer ring, snatching up these scraps as they fly towards them.

Black-Backed Jackals

Jackals are some of the most opportunistic African scavengers. These animals wait at a distance while the hyenas feed, as entering the tightly packed circle of hyenas can mean injury or death. These animals are incredibly cunning and sly and can take the smallest opportunity to go in for a piece. Usually, they wait till the feeding frenzy has abated, and the tightly packed hyenas start to dissipate.

Scavengers who Are Also Opportunistic Hunters

Scavengers often get a bad rep as the thieves of the African savannah. Television shows often feature hyenas “stealing” the kill from a lion or cheetah. Such a scene paints an unfair portrait of the hyena, as most predators will attempt to steal a kill from another animal, given a chance. After all, it is easier to poach a carcass that is already dead than to hunt one down yourself, using up your energy stores and risking injury from a well-placed kick.

The Hyena, the Hunter

Recent research has shown that most of the prey they consume is the result of their hunting efforts. Hyenas can run up to 50 kilometres per hour and maintain the chase for up to 24 kilometres. Furthermore, their clans can get pretty large – the one we observed had members numbering up to 40. With speed, stamina and numbers on their side, they beat the lion when it comes to the rate of successful kills. One-third of hyena hunts are successful, as opposed to one-forth for lions.

The Sneaky Killer – Africa’s Black-Backed Jackal

In the Masai Mara, we were astonished to see a pair of black-backed jackals suddenly deciding to hunt the baby of an unsuspecting impala . The impalas and the jackals were near each other, with the jackals tending to their one young cub. The impala was alert but did not think the jackals posed much danger. However, all that changed in the blink of an eye. Within thirty seconds, the jackals had successfully hunted the impala’s baby.

Jackals are intelligent creatures, and they can get quite creative when it comes to killing prey. A single lone jackal has been observed biting the testicles of a male impala until he literally keeled over and died.

Importance of Scavengers in Africa’s Ecosystem

Scavengers are a vital part of the food web on the African savannah. This importance is especially true of hyenas and vultures. These animals have incredible immune systems that prevent them from getting sick when they consume pathogens that are in carcasses. If dead bodies on the savannah are not consumed by nature’s primary clean up crew, other less suitable animals will take the role. In India, an accidental poisoning of a large number of vultures by the anti-inflammatory medication, diclofenac, resulted in the explosion of feral dog populations which ended up spreading rabies and costing the country millions of dollars in healthcare.

Threats to Africa’s Scavengers

Scavengers in Africa might have excellent immune systems against bacteria and natural pathogens. However, they are helpless against modern chemicals. Human-wildlife conflict is the main culprit for the wide-scale deaths of hyenas, vultures, and other carnivores that feed on dead livestock. As mentioned, medication has killed countless vultures in India. Fortunately, after this catastrophe, African governments banned diclofenac in veterinary products on the entire continent. However, there may be other medications with adverse long term effects on African scavengers we do not know about.

A hyena carcass being consumed by other scavengers like the white-backed vulture and marabou stork

The biggest threat to the scavengers in Africa is poisoning through the usage of bait. Two groups are responsible for this, livestock farmers and poachers. Livestock farmers consider animals like lion, leopard and hyena pests and seek to kill them with the use of poisoned bait. In this scenario, the farmer poisons a carcass and waits for a predator to eat the poisoned meat, which will weaken, and eventually kill them. Scavengers will, in turn, eat both the body of the poisoned predator and the poisoned carcass as well. This threat is, therefore, a double whammy to scavenger populations in Africa.

Hyena carcass being picked clean by vultures

Poachers also use this technique to kill vultures en-mass as the birds are used by rangers to discover the dead bodies of elephants or rhinos. Poachers often have to leave their dead elephants out in the open for a few days to rot, before they can remove their tusks from their faces. In this time, their “prize” is vulnerable to exposure by vultures.

The Need for Awareness

Although the scavengers in Africa play such a vital role in the well-being of the ecosystem, they often fall by the wayside when it comes to conservation efforts. This is a great mistake as these scavengers compete with disease vectors like blowfly, rats and feral dogs for the same food source. By “getting there first”, they prevent epidemics that can have devastating consequences.

FAQs for Scavengers in Africa

Some common scavengers in Africa are the hyena, several species of vultures, jackal, marabou stork.

Scavengers are keystone species. They are able to eat rotting meat, keeping the African savannahs clean of dead animals. Furthermore, they are less susceptible to disease – a hyena can eat diseased carrion and it will not get sick, thus it will be less likely to transmit disease.

Some animals that are considered scavengers are hunters. Jackals are opportunistic hunters – they do not plan to hunt, but if the opportunity presents itself, they will seize the moment and hunt prey. Hyenas on the other hand hunt actively and most of their food comes from their own hunting. It is a misconception that hyenas only eat what they can steal or scavenge.

I am a mother of three that has refused to grow up. Adulting is for the birds, so I go to Disney World every chance I get for that magical escape from reality. I believe that Haunted Mansion is the best ride in all of the Disney Parks, and I am fervently in team Happily Ever After for fireworks spectaculars, (sorry, not sorry, Enchanted). Finally, I hope I never grow tired of skipping down Main Street, USA, and my dream come true would be “friends with” the Fairy Godmother in my old age.

Create your Own Hunting Package!

In addition to our Pre-Set African Hunting Packages which we offer on our website above, we can build custom hunting packages to suit the desires of our clients. The hunting packages offered above include a discount based on either the number of hunters and the species which are readily available to hunt within the number of days allocated for the hunt with us in Africa.

We encourage clients to email us if we can cater a custom hunting package for them, i.e. tell us the number of days you wish to hunt, certain species you want to target, and any other excursions we can plan for you while hunting included but not limited to Photo Safaris to National Parks, Post Safari Trips to Victoria Falls, Fishing in Namibia, Encounters with Elephants and much more.

If hunters wish to hunt what we call A la Carte, we can arrange that as well with this simple game plan:

Daily Rate for a Hunter choosing to hunt with his own PH (Professional Hunter) - $345 per day

Daily Rate for a (2) Hunters wishing to hunt with (1) PH - $295 per day

Non Hunting Observers are always welcome to join the Hunter at the rate of $150 per day at our Witklip (Whitestone) Lodge

If a Hunter chooses to choose the A la Carte African Safari, they can pay the daily rate and then choose what to hunt based on our trophy fee rates listed here on the Trophy Fee Listings

South Africa Plains Game Hunting Packages

Looking for the best africa hunting trips.

Our Bushveld Adventure is our most popular African hunting safari package.

This hunt includes 10 days accommodation and trophy fees for kudu, blue wildebeest, impala and warthog. Book this hunt and enjoy a classic safari hunt in the untamed bushveld of South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Fair chase hunting, no game farms, and no hidden costs.

Bushveld Adventure 10 Days (9 Nights) Accommodation Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, & Warthog $8,230 Per Hunter (1×1) $7,760 Per Hunter (2×1) $1,995 Per Non-Hunter

The bushveld of western Limpopo Province is famous as one of the best destinations for kudu and impala hunting in all of southern Africa. In addition to the big kudu, blue wildebeest, and impala this area is known for, this part of the country is also home to large and diverse populations of many other species of plains game. With the opportunity to enjoy an incredible African safari hunting experience for exceptional trophy quality animals in one of the wildest and least developed areas remaining in South Africa, it’s easy to understand why this is one of our most popular hunting packages. This South African hunting safari includes the trophy fees for a kudu, a blue wildebeest, an impala, and a warthog.

Species Available At This Camp : Blue Wildebeest, Blesbok (Common & Saddleback), Bushpig, Bushbuck, Cape Buffalo, Duiker, Eland, Gemsbok, Giraffe, Impala, Klipspringer, Kudu, Monkey, Nyala, Porcupine, Red Hartebeest, Sable, Steenbok, Warthog, Waterbuck, and Zebra

Testimonial:  For those booking a hunt with John, you should know that what he is a guy you can depend upon: he is solid, dependable, experienced, and will deliver on what he tells you. I value honesty and integrity and both John and the professional hunters he works with have it in spades. I booked a plains game hunt with John and couldn’t have been more satisfied when it was over. The Limpopo camp on the river is exactly what I wanted: it’s dedicated only to you (there are no other hunters) and is old style. Kobus (my PH) and Fielmon (my tracker) are both highly experienced and it was fascinating to watch them work together. It was an incredible experience!

LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS HUNT!

First Timer’s Adventure 7 Days (6 Nights) Accommodation Blue Wildebeest, Blesbok, Impala, & Warthog $5,220 Per Hunter (1×1) $4,945 Per Hunter (2×1) $1,475 per Non-Hunter

This South African hunting package is perfect for the first time hunter to Africa as well as those with limited time or a strict budget. Taking place in the bushveld, hunters booked for this plains game hunting safari will get to experience breathtaking scenery and take in the awe-inspiring sight of the incredible variety of game that inhabits Africa. This package includes the trophy fees for four of South Africa’s most iconic plains game species: blue wildebeest, blesbok, warthog, and impala.

Testimonial:  I saw more game animals than I have ever seen in my entire life hunting in Texas. During my time in Africa, I was blessed to take a beautiful zebra along with a monster wildebeest, blesbok, and warthog. The accommodations were first class. I felt like a VIP the entire time. When you hunt there it is literally all about you.

The other best aspect of the hunt was my PH Kobus. When I arrived and shook his hand that first day at the airport we were client and PH. When I shook his hand getting on the plane to return to the United States, we were friends. That sounds very cliché but it is the truth. Kobus was professional, extremely knowledgeable, accommodating, patient with a newbie like me, he delivers everything he promises, and above all he is a good man. I enjoyed every second we spent together and I am very much looking forward to hunting with him again!

Family Plains Game Hunting Package 10 Days (9 Nights) Accommodation for 2 Hunters Each Hunter: Kudu, Impala, & Warthog 6 Animals Total $13,320 ($6,660 Per Hunter) $1,995 Per Non-Hunter

This is often booked as a father and son hunting package, but it’s also the perfect opportunity for any two friends or family members to enjoy a classic African plains game hunt together at an affordable price. The Family Package safari is almost identical to the Bushveld Package. The only differences are that the Family Package includes the daily rates for two hunters as well as trophy fees for two kudu, two impala, and two warthog. However, it does not include the trophy fee for blue wildebeest. Regardless of whether you want a hunt for two friends or a husband and wife, a father and daughter, or a father and son hunting package, each guest will get the hunting adventure of a lifetime in one of Africa’s premier areas for hunting plains game.

Testimonial:  I took my 14 year old son on this hunt and I can’t say enough good things about the experience! Big Game Hunting Adventures was absolutely great and John had everything totally prepared for us. Every detail of the hunting experience was taken care of in an exceptional manner. The number of animals we saw on this hunt was amazing and Johan (our PH) was perfect. With his help, we took some very nice trophies on our safari. This was the hunt of a lifetime and we’re looking forward to hunting with them again soon!

-Richard Petree

Deluxe Plains Game Hunting Package 14 Days (13 Nights) Accommodation Kudu, Eland, Waterbuck, Gemsbok, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, & Warthog $17,480 Per Hunter (1×1) $3,015 Per Non-Hunter

We built this South African hunting safari package specifically for serious trophy hunters who want to pursue a wide variety of African game animals during a single hunt. This package also takes place in the bushveld of western Limpopo Province and is the ultimate plains game hunting safari for the species native to that area. Nowhere else will you get the opportunity to hunt for Africa’s premier species of plains game like this at such a reasonable price.

Testimonial:  An epic trip! We were anticipating a nice hunting camp, a fair chance at a few animals for me, good food, and some decent wildlife watching to entertain my wife and her friends. What all of us found was five star dining at a beautiful ecotourism resort that had fabulous hunting and a staff who went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. This far exceeded our wildest expectations and we couldn’t be more pleased! My wife and I were thinking this was the trip of a lifetime, but we and I are already planning to return. Kobus, Billy, Filoman, Rasilli and the rest of the team are true professionals, and all of us left knowing we’d become good friends. I feel incredibly lucky to have connected with Big Game Hunting Adventures and John!

South Africa Cape Buffalo Hunting Package 7 Days (6 Nights) Accommodation $14,700 Per Hunter (1×1) $14,400 Per Hunter (2×1) $1,475 Per Non-Hunter

When it comes to hunting adventures, few experiences can compare to matching wits with the legendary Black Death  on foot in the African bushveld. After all, there’s a reason why cape buffalo are the most sought after member of the Big Five. This hunt takes place on our wild and undeveloped hunting area in western Limpopo Province. In addition to healthy populations of plains game and buffalo, this area still has that “wild Africa” feel with leopard preying on antelope, crocodile and hippo in the river, and the sounds of jackals at night. So, if you’ve always dreamed of a true African safari hunting adventure like the ones you read about in  Outdoor Life  and  Sports Afield , then you’ll have the trip of a lifetime on a Cape Buffalo hunting safari with us. This package includes the trophy fee for a trophy cape buffalo bull.

We have a 100% success rate over the past four years and our lifetime success rate on Cape Buffalo hunting safaris is over 90%. We only hunt hard bossed bulls, not immature bulls who have not had an opportunity to breed.

Testimonial:  First class outfit all the way around! They really make the whole deal easy and are right there for you the whole hunt every step of the way. John, Kobus, Johan and the rest of the crew will take good care of you and do everything possible to ensure a safe, successful, and very enjoyable hunting experience. I just completed my second safari with them and I’m ready for a third!

South Africa Cape Buffalo/Sable Hunting Package 8 Days (7 Nights) Accommodation 1 Cape Buffalo Bull & 1 Trophy Sable $20,135 Per Hunter (1×1) $1,655 Per Non-Hunter

With their long and spectacular curved horns, sable antelope are another one of Africa’s most desired trophy animals right up there with buffalo. Fortunately, this African safari hunting package is an excellent opportunity to hunt both sable and buffalo on the same trip at a discount. This hunt also takes place on our hunting area in the bushveld of western Limpopo Province and there are good prospects for a taking 40″+ sable bull on this hunt. This package includes the trophy fee for a trophy cape buffalo bull and a sable.

picture of cape buffalo hunting sable oct 2022

South Africa Cape Buffalo Cow Hunting Package 7 Days (6 Nights) Accommodation 1 Cape Buffalo Cow $6,775 Per Hunter (1×1) $6,585 Per Hunter (2×1) $1,475 Per Non-Hunter

We also offer a limited number of hunts for cape buffalo cows, which are a more affordable way to hunt cape buffalo than targeting a trophy bull. Specifically, we’re targeting older, post-breeding age cows without calves on these hunts. These old cows have been around the block a few times and are as formidable of an adversary as a bull. Indeed, approaching a buffalo herd in the thick bush and evading all those eyes, ears, and noses to identify and shoot an older female without a calf is an experience you won’t forget!

This package includes the trophy fee for a cape buffalo cow.

South Africa Wing Shooting Fees Pigeon, Dove, Guinea Fowl, Crested Francolin, Sand Grouse, White Faced Ducks $355 Per Hunter, Per Day $25 Per Day Shotgun Rental $12 Per Box of Shells

Our primary hunting areas have some fantastic bird hunting opportunities and you’re welcome to add a day or two of wing shooting onto a plains game and/or buffalo hunt. In particular, our main camp has healthy populations of pigeon, dove, and guinea fowl year round. Other species are migratory.

Depending on the exact time of year and exact bird species we’re hunting, this can range from sitting on the edge of a field pass shooting doves and pigeons as they come and go (in flocks of dozens and hundreds) to some sort of beaten hunt for other birds using people and/or dogs. There’s good bird hunting all year round, but there are definitely seasonal peaks. The months of May, June, July, and August tend to have really good hunting for a variety of bird species. Contact us for more details on adding some wing shooting to your hunt.

Professional Video Service $295 Per Day $2,065 for a 7 day hunt $2,360 for an 8 day hunt $2,950 for a 10 day hunt

Want to relive your once in a lifetime hunt and/or share the experience with friends/family when you return home? If so, then you’ll definitely want to book the services of our videographer. He’ll go out hunting with you each day, film the events of your trip, and then build a video of the entirety of your hunt. He’ll do all the editing in camp and will provide a USB flash drive with the completed video on your departure day for you to take home with you.

Videos are normally 40-60 minutes long and tell the story of your full experience: the hunt itself, camp life, especially interesting encounters with wildlife, etc. You’re also welcome to make special requests of him while you’re there. Contact us for more details on booking a videographer for your safari.

Why Should I Book A South Africa Hunting Safari Package With You?

  • No hidden costs: our South Africa safari hunting packages include everything except for your air fare, taxidermy, and shipment of your trophies.
  • We are not a high turnover outfit. Instead, we focus on providing quality hunts with the best possible experience for each guest. For that reason, we only book one hunt at a time. Instead of sharing the area with people that you don’t know, you’ll have the whole place to yourself. This allows us to give you our full attention and ensure that you receive VIP treatment on your hunt.
  • We’ll pick you up at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. So, unlike a hunt in Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, or the Eastern Cape of South Africa, no follow on airline flights or plane charters to places like Harare or Port Elizabeth are necessary if you book a South Africa hunting package with us.
  • If you want to bring your own rifle, we’ll get a temporary import permit for you and help you with all the paperwork involved at no extra charge. So, there is no need to go through the hassle of importing your rifle on your own or pay an additional $200-300 to another company for their help with this.
  • We book a limited number of hunts each year, abide by strict quotas, and carefully manage our hunting areas. This ensures that our hunters have high success rates and take the best quality trophies possible (over 90% of our trophies make the Safari Club International or Rowland Ward record book).
  • Our Professional Hunters (PHs) are friendly, knowledgeable, and have many years worth of experience guiding North American, European, and Asian hunters on plains game and dangerous game hunting safaris.
  • We take pride in providing authentic African hunting safaris with outstanding personal service before, during, and after your hunt. You will not have problems getting in touch us when and we’ll be available to you through the entire process to provide assistance with anything you need related to the hunt.
  • We strive to provide high quality, all-inclusive African hunting safaris with no hidden costs. We specialize in providing classic safari hunting adventures and do not offer cull hunts or hunts for non-trophy animals. Not every hunting outfitter prices their hunts in this manner. There are lots of “cheap” or “discount” African safari hunting packages out there advertising cut rate hunting prices and hunters who book those sort of trips often get what they pay for.
  • This is a veteran owned and operated business and we plan all of our safari hunts with military precision and attention to detail.

For more useful information on our Africa hunting packages, read our Africa FAQ .

Advantages of Booking An Africa Hunting Safari Package

The biggest advantage of booking a hunting package with us is that our packages are priced at a slight discount. We also build our Africa hunting packages for the ideal length of time to hunt the animals included. This is especially helpful for hunters on their first trip to Africa. Finally, as previously mentioned, our Africa hunting packages include all the costs associated with the actual hunt. The price advertised here is the price that you will pay at the end of your hunt.

Can I Take Additional Animals If I Book An African Hunting Safari Package?

Absolutely! During the course of a hunt you will normally encounter hundreds of animals each day. It’s virtually guaranteed that you’ll run into a couple different species that you were not planning on hunting (and maybe didn’t even know existed prior to your safari) while you’re in Africa. We pride ourselves in flexibility and if you decide that you’re interested in taking an additional animal or two, just let your PH know and he’ll do his best to get you a shot at what you’re after. Additional animals are priced at our normal trophy fees .

What Happens If I Don’t Take An Animal Included In A Package?

We historically have success rates over 90% on most species of plains game. However, since we do practice fair chase hunting for wild animals, nothing is guaranteed and hunters do occasionally fail to take an animal they were after. So, if you do not take one of the animals included in your package, you will not be charged the trophy fee (at time of booking) for that animal. That being said, while we will make every effort to recover all animals wounded during our hunts, any animal wounded and not found will be charged full price.

What Is A Typical Day Like On An African Safari Hunting Trip?

A normal hunting day normally begins early in the morning when the hunters wake up and eat breakfast, which consists of coffee, rusks (a hard, dry biscuit), cereal, and juice. Generally, the hunters, the PH, and the trackers leave camp around sunrise in a 4×4 hunting vehicle carrying a cooler full of drinks and snacks. Depending on the desires and physical abilities of the hunter, we may hunt on foot via tracking or walk and stalk, set up on a good vantage point and glass for animals, or hunt from a blind.

Depending on how things go, the hunters may eat lunch in the bush during a break from the hunt, or they may return to the main camp to eat. The hunt then continues until dusk, when the hunters return to camp for dinner and to prepare for the adventures of the next day!

The video below does a great job of showing what the area looks like and how we conduct our hunts.

What Is The Food Like On An African Hunting Safari?

Regardless of whether you’re visiting from the USA, Canada, Europe, or Asia, excellent food is really a point of emphasis for us on our South Africa hunting safaris and we take great pride in serving delicious meals prepared from the game taken on the hunt. All meals are prepared on site by our professionally trained chef and consist of a combination of authentic South African cuisine and wild game.

picture of dinner on south african hunting safari

Meals feature lots of meat, vegetables, and fruit and are accompanied by fine South African wines specifically chosen to compliment the meal. After a hard day of hunting, you’ll get a chance to relax and unwind with a sundowner and snacks around the fire pit before dinner while you rehash the day’s experiences and talk about tomorrow’s plans.

What Are The Accommodations Like On An Africa Hunting Safari?

Our hunters all stay in individual chalets wired with 220v electricity. Each chalet is kept in pristine condition and furnished with a bed, sink, toilet, and a shower. Our camp also features a fully stocked bar and an outdoor fire pit so you can sit around the campfire and swap stories each evening. The camp staff will also do your laundry as necessary over the course of the hunt.

To learn more details and to see photographs of the accommodations you’ll stay in if you book one of our safari hunting packages, visit  our accommodations page .

Can I Bring A Friend/Family Member Along Who Doesn’t Want To Hunt?

Sure! Our facilities in South Africa are all very comfortable and non-hunting guests are welcome in camp. A large number of our hunters bring along friends and/or family members who are not interested in hunting, but still want to enjoy seeing what Africa is like. For this reason, non-hunting guests are welcome to accompany the hunters on safari each day and we are happy to arrange a game drive, photographic safari, other wildlife viewing opportunity for them.

We can also organize other activities like hot air balloon rides, wildlife viewing, photo safaris, trips to Kruger National Park (which is a great opportunity to see other wildlife like lion and rhino), or visits to nearby tourist attractions. Contact us for pricing on these additional activities.

South Africa Hunting Itinerary

Day 1:  Your Professional Hunter will meet you at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg in the arrivals hall immediately after you clear passport control and customs. If you brought your own rifle, we will have a pre-approved rifle import permit ready and he will help you retrieve it from the police office in the airport.

You’ll then head straight to camp. Depending on what time you arrive, we’ll stop for breakfast/lunch/dinner or snacks as necessary during the drive. Time permitting, we’ll make a quick stop at the range to check your rifle and potentially hunt that afternoon/evening.

Day 2 Through 2nd T0 Last Day: These days are completely dedicated to hunting. A normal day on one of our Africa hunting safaris normally begins early in the morning when the hunters wake up and eat breakfast, which consists of coffee, rusks (a hard, dry biscuit), cereal, and juice. Generally, the hunters and the PH leave camp around sunrise in a 4×4 vehicle carrying a cooler full of drinks and snacks.

Depending on how things go, hunters may eat lunch in the bush during a break from the hunt, or they may return to the main camp to eat. The hunt then continues until dusk, when the hunters return to the hunting lodge for dinner and to prepare for the next day!

Last Day:  At the end of the hunt, you’ll eat breakfast in camp and then your PH will drive you back to Johannesburg. We can also take you souvenir shopping on the way to the airport and eat lunch in the city. Your PH will assist you in checking your bags and rifle (if you brought one). He will stay with you until you successfully make it through the security checkpoint.

We donated a hunt to the Send-A-Vet Foundation and hosted a Mike Stilson, who was wounded in Iraq during September 2007, on a plains game hunt in 2017. There’s a great article about Big Game Hunting Adventures and how we helped sponsor Mike’s hunt on Wide Open Spaces that’s well worth your time to check out.
