A holiday can brighten your year, but planning it takes time and effort. You might feel confused and overwhelmed, and wonder if you missed anything. However, great travel agencies can change the game in your favour.

If you live in the Toronto area, you can turn to these top-rated travel agencies for your next vacation. We sorted them either by highest-rating or in one of these travel specialties: Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Europe or adventure travel.

Resolution could take a few hours or a few weeks or months. It depends on the complexity of the issues, the level of documentation and the degree of cooperation of those involved.

17 Of The Best Beaches In And Around Toronto

travel agent beaches toronto

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations

Toronto is known for its vibrant city life but locals know that the region boasts many stunning beaches that offer a refreshing escape from the urban core. These are some of the very best beaches in and around Toronto, offering the perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty.

Lake Ontario from Bluffer’s Park

1. Bluffer’s Park And Beach

Tucked beneath the captivating Scarborough Bluffs, Bluffer’s Park and Beach offers an amazing retreat from city life. Whether you’re planning a picnic or something more adventurous, the expansive beach, framed by turquoise waters, provides a serene escape outside Toronto. Hiking and biking enthusiasts will love the breathtaking views. Equipped with amenities like washrooms, changing facilities, and drinking fountains, Bluffer’s Park is family-friendly.

2. Cherry Beach

Cherry Beach stands out from the pack for its rocky shores and green expanses, making it a playground for sports fans. The area features windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, multiple bike trails, and picnic spots. This beach is dog-friendly, featuring an off-leash dog area for your furry companions. However, the sand here is more coarse than others on the list, which might be a consideration if you’re traveling with small children.

Early summer morning on Cobourg Beach

3. Cobourg Beach

If you want to escape Toronto entirely, Cobourg Beach is the perfect destination. There are pretty views, a nice boardwalk, and soft white sands. Kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards are available for rent and there are volleyball courts as well. And, as all Torontonains know, the town is also home to the Big Apple. This roadside attraction is hard to miss and offers a large apple-themed store and bakery.

4. Crystal Beach

Crystal Beach is located on Lake Erie and offers a little slice of paradise with its vast sandy shore and crystal-clear waters. A beloved multigenerational retreat, it’s popular among both locals and visitors. However, visitors should note that this beach can be lively (which is a polite way to say that it’s party-infused on weekends), so it might not be the best choice for peaceful sunbathing. Nonetheless, the white sand beauty and stunning views make it a worthwhile destination.

Sunset at Grand Bend Beach

5. Grand Bend Beach

Spanning around 20 acres, Grand Bend Beach offers soft sands, inviting waters, and a fun atmosphere. Grand Bend is bustling with activity due to its popularity, offering various dining and snacking options, making it a perfect spot for a beach day. If you’re camping at the nearby Pinery Provincial Park, it’s well worth making the trip into town just for the beach alone. Grand Bend’s Main Beach is one of only 22 in Canada to have earned official Blue Flag status for its commitment to strict water quality and safety criteria. Grand Bend also features mats to make the beach more accessible to people using wheelchairs or strollers.

6. Ipperwash Beach

Nestled within Lambton Shores, Ipperwash Beach is one of Ontario’s longest freshwater beaches. Its gentle shallows are ideal for serene swims and its tranquil ambiance sets it apart from busier beaches. Nearby eateries ensure satisfying dining options, making it a relaxing destination. Just like Grand Bend, Ipperwash is just a short distance from Pinery Provincial Park.

The boardwalk at Kelso Conservation Area

7. Kelso Conservation Area

Located in Milton, Kelso Lake is a short trip from the city, offering an idyllic outdoor day for water sports and relaxation. Families can walk down the stroller-friendly boardwalk around the lake; take to the water with a canoe, kayak, paddleboat, or stand-up paddleboard; or just enjoy an afternoon at the beach. Kelso has an extensive network of trails that can be used for hiking or mountain biking.

8. Kew-Balmy Beach

Kew-Balmy Beach offers a serene escape just steps away from Woodbine Beach, another popular spot for Torontonians. With its versatile amenities like a playground, fitness equipment, a lawn-bowling club, a boardwalk, and an off-leash dog area, it caters to all kinds of visitors. While it bustles on the weekends, it retains a local vibe, making it perfect for unwinding with a book.

A snowy day in the winter at Marie Curtis Park

9. Marie Curtis Beach Park

Nestled at the city’s edge, Marie Curtis Beach Park provides a refreshing change from bustling city life. History lovers will be keen to note that this is one of the few beaches in North America named after a female community leader. The park was created in the late 1950s as a way to control flooding after a devastating hurricane. Now, it’s home to wildlife, native plants, a wading pool, picnic spots, walking trails, and its namesake beach.

10. Port Burwell Beach

Located on Lake Erie’s northern shore, Port Burwell Beach presents an enchanting expanse with a 1.5-mile stretch of sandy shoreline. Volleyball nets, picnic benches, hiking trails, camping, a submarine (really!), a marine museum, a lighthouse, marinas, a provincial park, and ample amenities enhance the experience. It’s another beach that has the rare Blue Flag certification for commitment to water quality and environmental protection.

Sunset at Port Stanley Beach

11. Port Stanley Beach

Situated along Lake Erie, Port Stanley offers a stunning shoreline and a variety of activities. The serene waters invite refreshing swims, while the expansive beach ensures ample space for all to enjoy. Port Stanley also features mats to make the beach more accessible to people using wheelchairs or strollers. Looking for something a little smaller? Head down the road to Port Stanley’s Little Beach, where you’ll find 600 feet of secluded sandy beach and shallow water that’s well protected by a berm.

12. Rouge Beach

Nestled near the Rouge River, Rouge Beach offers sun-soaked days with beautiful views and excellent hiking, cycling, and paddling. Despite its name, the beach is not “rouge” or red at all. It’s named for the river while the beach itself features white sand and blue waters. This is a popular fishing destination and there is also excellent birdwatching at the nearby Rouge Marsh.

The dunes of Sandbanks Provincial Park

13. Sandbanks Provincial Park

Sandbanks Provincial Park showcases sprawling sandy beaches, tranquil waters, and huge white sand dunes. As one of the most popular provincial parks in Ontario, this is a busy weekend destination and reservations for day-use are highly recommended. If you hope to camp here, book well in advance. When you’re in the area, be sure to stop by some of the many wineries, cheese shops, and food emporiums.

14. Sauble Beach

Though a bit of a trek from Toronto (just under 3 hours away), Sauble Beach’s white sands, magnificent views, and captivating sunsets make it a worthy escape. With over 6 miles of shoreline, it offers a host of water activities on Lake Huron. Sauble boasts that it’s Canada’s number one freshwater beach. That’s a tough claim to verify but we’d like to think that Sauble Beach is definitely up there!

15. Singing Sands Beach

Part of Bruce Peninsula National Park, Singing Sands Beach offers sand dunes, wetlands, and hiking trails. Embrace the beauty of blooming flowers and endless wonders on Lake Huron’s shores. The cute name has a lot of science behind it. The grains of sand actually squeak or “sing” when you drag your feet on the shore. What you’re hearing is the high content of silica and quartz in the dry sand particles that rub together and create a sound as you’re walking.

Pink umbrellas at Sugar Beach

16. Sugar Beach

A beach in the heart of downtown? Why not! A former industrial area across from the Redpath Sugar Factory is now a sandy beach complete with pink umbrellas. There’s no swimming at Sugar Beach but no one seems to mind. It’s a charming, whimsical escape from the city.

17. Wasaga Beach

It’s not the closest to the city, but any Torontonian will tell you that a summertime trek to Wasaga Beach is a quintessential part of the city’s summertime experience. Wasaga is the world’s longest freshwater beach (actually six beaches spread over nearly 7 miles). It’s a fun, exciting spot with superb swimming.

What our clients are saying about us

travel agent beaches toronto

From navigating interisland flights to recommendations for resorts and hotels, our travel advisor’s experience was invaluable. When we decide to extend our stay, she handled all communications with the resort, including getting us an upgrade to an overwater bungalow at a preferred rate.

We planned to honeymoon in the Dominican Republic. As the pandemic progressed and we couldn’t go, our advisor jumped right on it to get refunds and gave us new options that suited our interests, were safe, and that were within our budget.

My travel advisor got me the details about the protocols and precautions in advance, so there were no surprises along the way. She also mapped our drive ties, options for routes to Cape Cod, and even stops along the way.

My advisor made planning so much fun. I approached him with the states we wanted to visit; he came back with adventures in each one. If it weren’t for him, we would’ve missed one of the trip’s more meaningful moments at Memphis’ Civil Rights Museum.

Toronto may not be the legal capital of Canada, but it's hard to deny that it is the cultural capital. The largest city in the country, Toronto is home to many of Canada's top cultural institutions, making it one of the most popular Canadian cities with visitors. The cosmopolitan urban life of this city means there's always something interesting going on here, and no matter what time of year you visit, you'll find plenty to do, including the iconic CN Tower , the Royal Ontario Museum, and St Lawrence Market.

But even the biggest city fan needs a break now and then, and Toronto is big and busy enough to wear anyone down eventually. Plus, summers in Ontario can be hot and humid, and there's no better way to escape the weather than to visit a beach. Although Toronto is hundreds of kilometers from the nearest ocean, its position on the shores of Lake Ontario means it actually has tons of beaches both in the city and in the surrounding area.

If you're looking for beaches near Toronto, you have plenty to choose from. Drop off your unneeded bags at a Toronto suitcase storage and check out some of these great beaches, both in the city and just outside. Whatever kind of beach you're looking for, chances are good you can find it here.

Centre Island Park

Centre Island Beach

If you really want the feel of getting away from it all without actually straying too far from the city, take a ferry to Centre Island and visit this beautiful beach. Centre Island Beach is one of four beaches on the Toronto Islands and is also one of the most lively, with some of the best amenities you'll find on any beach near the city.

Travel distance from Toronto

A boat is the only way to access Centre Island, which is a big part of what gives Centre Island Beach its remote feel. The ferry runs from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in downtown Toronto and visits three different islands, and it only takes around 15 minutes to reach Centre Island.

Activity recommendations

Biking: Biking is a popular activity on all of the Toronto Islands, which are all connected by land. You can bring a bike on the ferry with you, including a city rental bike, or rent a bike once you reach the island to explore on two wheels. The hardpacked sand of the beach can support bikes, and there are plenty of designated bike paths to use as you travel around this area.

Swimming: Centre Island Beach is protected by a rocky breakwater that ensures calm and relatively warm water for swimming. The water quality is regularly monitored by the city, and there are changing rooms and lockers near the pier to make swimming easier. For a less crowded swimming experience, you can also visit nearby Ward's Island Beach, a Blue Flag beach known for being one of the best beaches for swimming in the area.

Centre Island gets extremely busy in the summer thanks to its proximity to downtown Toronto. For that reason, if you're not a fan of crowds, you might want to consider visiting in the spring or fall. The water temperatures will be colder, and some of the restaurants and other businesses may close for the season, but you'll have more space to yourself at these times.

Woodbine Beach in Toronto

Hanlan's Point Beach

Another of the main beaches on the Toronto Islands, Hanlan's Point Beach offers some of the best sand anywhere near the city and a more laid-back vibe than you'll find at other Toronto beaches. The sandy shores of this stunning beach make it a fantastic place to hang out and enjoy the sunny days of a Toronto summer.

Like other Toronto Island beaches, Hanlan's Point Beach requires a short ferry ride to reach, followed by a walk of around 10 to 15 minutes. It's almost jarring to discover this beautiful beach so close to the city.

Plane spotting: This isn't something every beach offers, but Hanlan's Point is close to Toronto Island Airport , so you can watch planes taking off and landing from the beach itself. This adds some visual interest to your beach day and is always a hit with kids.

Watch the sunset: This beach faces southwest, so it provides one of the best places in Toronto to watch the sunset. Bring a picnic with you and stretch out on the sand dunes to watch the sun slip beneath the horizon, lighting up the glittering waters of Lake Ontario on the way.

Woodbine Beach

With tons of fine sand and an urban location that's hard to beat, Woodbine Beach is understandably one of the most popular in the city. Attracting a younger crowd, this is a great place to hang out, enjoy activities, and still be close to everything that the city has to offer.

Woodbine Beach lies to the east of downtown Toronto. You can get here with a drive of between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on traffic, or make use of public transport and take tram line 501 from Queen Street West to Neville Park, then walk 650 m to the beach from there.

Beach sports: If you're the type that likes to stay active, you're in luck. Woodbine Beach offers tons of beach volleyball courts as well as swimming and running on the sand or the boardwalk, so it's easy to stay active here. You can also rent kayaks and standup paddle boards to explore from the water and burn off some energy at this fun beach.

Woodbine Park: Located just behind the beach, this park offers playgrounds, picnic facilities, and a skate park, along with lots of walking trails to explore. It's also a great place to find local food trucks and even hosts the Toronto Food Truck Festival, making this one of the best Toronto beaches to visit if you want to enjoy great food at the same time.

Rouge Beach in Toronto

Rouge Beach

Located in one of Canada's newest national parks, Rouge Beach is a unique place that provides a great escape from the city without going too far. Thanks to the Rouge River that enters Lake Ontario at this point, the water is warmer than at other Toronto beaches, and though the beach is relatively small, it's rarely crowded. This is a great place to check out for any beach lover in the city.

Rouge Beach is located a little further from the city than some of the other urban beaches on this list, which is part of why it sees fewer crowds. However, it's still easy to reach. You can drive here from central Toronto in around half an hour, or take the train from Toronto Union Station to Rouge Hill, then walk 2 km to the beach for a journey time of around one hour.

Swimming: Rouge Beach may be one of the best in the area for swimming. Partly this is due to the warmer water and partly due to the secluded surroundings that make this beach feel far more natural and unspoiled than other city beaches. Be aware, though, that there are no lifeguards on patrol here, so swimming is at your own risk.

Paddleboarding: The wetlands of Rouge Urban National Park are a great place to explore on self-propelled watercraft like standup paddle boards and kayaks. The marshy areas are home to some interesting wildlife, and the scenery is second to none. It's the perfect way to better explore the natural environment of Rouge Beach.

Cherry Beach in Toronto

Cherry Beach

This small but beautiful beach is a little bit of a hidden gem close to the city. Easy to reach from downtown Toronto and close to some of the city's major attractions, it nevertheless provides a great place to take a break from urban life.

Cherry Beach is only 5 km from downtown Toronto and is reachable by a drive of around 10 minutes. You can also take a bus to Villiers Street and walk from there.

Windsurfing: Cherry Beach is the home of the Toronto Windsurfing Club . One of the largest windsurfing clubs in North America, this is a great place to take lessons and try this exciting sport for yourself.

Axe Throwing: This unusual sport is growing in popularity around the world, and Cherry Beach has a facility where you can try it for yourself. Bring a few friends and learn how to hurl axes at a wooden target for a fun way to spend some time close to the beach.

Kew-Balmy Beach

Close to busy Woodbine Beach, Kew-Balmy Beach offers a far more laid-back environment than its neighbor. This beach is been a popular place to enjoy sun and water in Toronto for more than a century, and it's still a great place to relax and enjoy the beach vibes.

It's around a 15-minute drive from the center of Toronto to Kew-Balmy Beach. You can also get here by taking tram line 501 to Neville Park.

Kew Gardens: This large urban park is right behind the beach and offers tons of things to do. There are plenty of hiking trails, an indoor ice rink, a playground, a bandshell, and a branch of the Toronto public library. There's also a tennis club if you fancy a game and lots of benches where you can just sit and enjoy the sunshine or bring a picnic. There's also an off-leash dog park where you can get your furry friends some exercise.

Hiking: The Promenade behind Kew-Balmy Beach is part of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. This trail stretches for miles along the shore of the lake, giving you great views over the city's beaches and its iconic skyline at the same time.

Sunnyside Beach in Toronto

Sunnyside Beach

Actually a collection of four beaches, Sunnyside Beach offers a great place to get away from the frantic pace of the city and enjoy Toronto's natural environment.

This beach is only a 12-minute drive from downtown Toronto. Tram line 304 to Wilson Park Road will also get you here long as you don't mind a walk of a kilometer or so from the station to the beach.

Gus Ryder Outdoor Pool: If the cool waters of Lake Ontario aren't for you, this outdoor pool offers a great alternative. With showers, changing rooms, and lifeguards on duty, it's a great place to swim close to the beach.

High Park: Located just behind Sunnyside Beach, this huge park is home to a zoo, an amphitheater, another outdoor pool, several playgrounds, and a beautiful botanical garden. You could easily spend the day here while visiting Sunnyside Beach.

Best beaches near Toronto

These are some of the best beaches in Toronto, but they are far from the only ones. Further from the city, you'll find great locations like Marie Curtis Beach Park close to Mississauga or Gibraltar Point Beach on the Toronto Islands. Plus, there are other urban beaches like Sugar Beach where you can go if you just want a taste of the beach life without leaving the city.

These local beaches are all free to visit, making them some fantastic activities for touring Toronto on a budget . And with so many excellent beaches in locations further from the city, it's not hard to make them the destination for great weekend trips from Toronto , too.

9 top beaches in Toronto for an urban splash

Think about Toronto and you might conjure up images of the CN Tower , the Hockey Hall of Fame, hip neighborhoods , cool street art, and the foodie offerings of Chinatown... but beaches? That probably never crossed your mind.

But Toronto has beaches by the bucket and spade load, from man-made sprinkles of golden sand in the center to lovely natural strands at Scarborough Bluffs and out on the Toronto Islands. Torontonians really know how to take advantage of the precious rays of summer, and the city’s location on Lake Ontario means there are plenty of beaches to choose from to catch a bit of sun.

Ranging from sandy, to rocky, to tucked under impressive cliffs or scattered across islands, Toronto's beaches are a perfect stop for any warm-weather vacation in the city. There’s even a clothing-optional beach should you want to, ahem, bare it all. Just double-check the reports from the city's SwimSafe team before you dive right in, as seasonal changes can affect water quality in Lake Ontario.

Summer is prime beach time, but Torontonians still hang out on the beaches in spring and fall, watching sunsets over Lake Ontario and enjoying the lengthening evenings or the fall colors. Here are the best beaches in Toronto for sunbathing, swimming, beach walks and more.

Sugar Beach, East Bayfront

Best for urban sunbathing

As close to downtown as you can get, Sugar Beach is a little slice of sand dotted with Instagram-worthy pink umbrellas. Located next to the Redpath Sugar Refinery (hence its sweet name and those candy-pink umbrellas), this sandy patch in the city used to be a parking lot. It’s a favorite for locals who live and work downtown as a sunbathing spot or a place to sit back and enjoy a warm evening.

That said, it's also plopped in the middle of a rather industrial part of the city. Lake views might not be the selling point here (you’re likely to see a freight ship docked nearby to transport all that sugar). But what Sugar Beach does provide is a quick beach fix in between the concrete and urban grit, which is actually quite cool.

Expect to see city sunbathers, social media posers, comfy wooden Muskoka chairs and large rocks for lounging. If you’ve spent a day wandering or cycling downtown, make your way to Sugar Beach for a quick reprieve from the city.

Sunnyside Beach, Sunnyside

Best for a seaside vibe

The West End's nomination for the best beach in Toronto feels like a mini seaside getaway. Sunnyside Beach doesn’t come with fine, silky sand – it’s more on the pebbly side – but it’s still a popular hub for those who love an active afternoon. This beach is set next to a long boardwalk that's popular for jogging, walking and cycling, and the shorefront has beach volleyball nets and paddleboard and kayak rentals during the summer. At certain times of year, there's even competitive dragon boat racing.

Pick up a bike from the city's bike-share scheme , cycle down to the water and chill on this laid-back beach. If you’re seeking an even more laid-back vibe, the historic and Mediterranean-inspired Sunnyside Pavillion on the beach comes with a restaurant and bar, ample outdoor seats, frosty cocktails and sometimes even some live music.

People looking over the shoreline from Scarborough Bluffs, Toronto

Bluffer’s Park Beach, Scarborough Bluffs

Best for feeling miles from the city

The Scarborough Bluffs are one of Toronto’s most unexpected finds – a cliff-backed stretch of lakeshore running for 14km (9 miles). These rocky dramatic cliffs formed over the last 100,000 years, creating a scenic backdrop along the water’s edge. Locals have always loved Scarborough Bluffs Park , with its walking trails and marina, but the same bluffs also shelter some of the best beaches in Toronto, including the beach at Bluffer's Park . Think soft sand, shallow water and a couple of good swimming spots.

Once you’re down at the bottom of the bluffs and looking out to the water, you’re probably going to forget you’re even in Toronto. Getting here is easiest by car or bike, but you can also hop on a bus from the Kennedy subway station to Bluffer’s Park Beach. The sandy beach is so worth the journey to get there, and your Instagram feed will thank you if the weather is on form.

Centre Island Beach, Centre Island

Best for families

One of the coolest things about Toronto? The islands that sit in the lake, just off the downtown shore. The ten small Toronto Islands (connected by bridges) were formed due to erosion from the Scarborough Bluffs. For Torontonians, it’s a summer tradition to leap on the ferry and head over to these car-free islands for a day of fun chilling on some of the most family-friendly beaches in Toronto.

Topping the list is Centre Island Beach on Centre Island. It may not be the islands’ most aesthetically perfect stretch of sand, but it is easy to get to once you hop off the Centre Island ferry (follow the signs by foot or by bike) and it places you right by the Centreville Amusement Park . The beach is a mix of sand and rocks, but it comes with a breakwater to keep the water calm, making it great for families. If you’re looking to take a dip, the west side of the beach has the best swimming.

Hanlan’s Point Beach, Centre Island

Best for the body-confident!

Not for the faint of heart, nor the shy, this beach on Centre Island is the city’s only official clothing-optional beach. The one-kilometer stretch of sand is hidden away thanks to sandy dunes and brush, so you won’t accidentally land on this beach without some intention of going there. If you are looking to bare it all, take the Hanlan’s ferry from downtown and follow the signs and path to the clothing-optional section of beach.

Keep in mind that part of the beach is not clothing-optional, so make sure you’re in the right place before you disrobe. On warm days, you’ll find this small strip of sand bustling with sunbathers of all ages, maybe with a bonfire or two, some BBQs and a lot of yachts anchored off-shore. If you want to flaunt your body positivity, just bring a towel and sunscreen and strip down (to whatever level of nudity you want) on arrival.

A sunset with a city skyline in the background, boats in the foreground

Ward’s Island Beach, Ward's Island

Best for a quiet escape

If you’re looking to escape the crowds of Centre Island Beach, make your way over to Ward’s Island Beach . This smaller stretch of sand is more of a local favorite, attracting many island residents, and it's accessible by a 3km (1.9-mile) boardwalk linking the two beaches. It’s a bit rockier than some Toronto beaches, so bring water shoes if you have them (expect sand until you get to the water, then knobbly pebbles).

Even if you don't go in, you’ll get great views of the city from this vantage point. Ward's definitely has a more laid-back vibe, and you can enjoy the sun, read a book or have a picnic and forget you're in a major city. If you need food, rather than the pizza and ice-cream offerings at Centre Island Beach, hit the Rectory Cafe at Ward's Island for wine, salads, snacks and yummy treats.

Woodbine Beach, Ashbridges Bay Park

Best for people-watching

Hands down the busiest and most frequented beach on our list, Woodbine Beach is located in the east end of the city at Ashbridges Bay Park . And it’s your spot to get a glimpse of life as a Torontonian. Head here for people-watching, an upbeat vibe, music, volleyball and sunbathing, in a handy location just east of Old Toronto.

If relaxing is your thing, this might not be the beach for you, because things are definitely lively. On summer holidays such as Canada Day or Labour Day, thousands of people flock to the sandy shore to see fireworks. But on any warm day, you’ll find throngs of people with towels catching the rays and long lines to get the beach volleyball nets, plus people kayaking and canoeing and more.

Because it’s busy, you’re going to want to nab a prime beach spot early (before 10am). Public transit (buses and streetcars) are usually packed, and parking will be scarce, so take an Uber or ride a bike to the park for minimum stress.

A lifeguard station with a sunrise inthe background

Kew-Balmy Beach

Best for nostalgia

We’re going to say that Kew-Balmy Beach is not only one of the best beaches in Toronto, but also one of the most underrated. It's less hectic and bustling than its sister beach at Woodbine, perhaps due to the slightly grittier sand, and has an old-fashioned local feeling. Think off-leash dog areas, laid-back vibes and far fewer beach volleyball courts and activities.

This is where you’ll want to throw down your towel, put your headphones on and listen to a podcast, or read a book. Another highlight is the famed lifeguard station – built in the 1920s, it’s one of the last historic structures along Toronto’s waterfront. You'll also be steps away from Kew Gardens and Beaches Park .

Cherry Beach, Port Lands

Best for making a noise

Hands up if you’re looking for a beach and music! On the edge of the Port Lands zone, Cherry Beach is also known as Toronto’s dance beach. Dance parties have been happening here on Sundays since the early 2000s, and if you’re looking for a lively summer hangout, Cherry Beach has your name all over it.

The beach is tucked onto the edge of a mostly industrial area, and you’ll need to bypass the incredibly popular Cabana Pool Bar and music venue Rebel to find this sandy haven. But it’s worth it. It’s a great hang-out spot if you’re looking to meet up with friends; bring your portable speakers, some food and friends and you’ll be all set.

One thing you can’t miss while here is the Cherry Beach Lifeguard station, nicknamed "the cottage" because it looks like a tiny house. It’s not as well-known as the Kew-Balmy Beach lifeguard station, but it has just as much charm.

12 Best Beaches in Toronto

Written by Michael Law Updated May 3, 2023

Author Michael Law lives near Toronto and enjoys spending time at the beaches in summer.

Toronto's beaches are some of the best beaches in Ontario . They are easily accessible to all, with lots of space - you'll have no trouble finding your perfect patch of sand.

On warm summer days, they can be packed with families, teenagers, and retirees enjoying the wide-open spaces. Activities include swimming, playing in the waves, strolling, or just reading a book in a chair. Lifeguards are on duty at most locations to keep an eye on you.

Woodbine Beach

The beaches are an escape from the densely populated city. Here, your views are huge, with the other side of the lake not visible. At many locations on windy days, you'll be entertained by kiteboarders or windsurfers racing back and forth offshore.

Public transport options are good in most cases; however, if you are driving, note that parking is tricky at some locations; go early on hot days. In fact, many of the beaches are connected via the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, making it easy to bike or walk between locations.

Playgrounds, changerooms, washrooms, and concessions are available at all locations. Pack a lunch - most beaches have green space in behind, with picnic tables and, in some cases, free barbecues.

Of the 12 beaches listed, four of them are on Toronto Islands : Ward's, Centre Island, Hanlan's Point, and Gibraltar. Reaching them involves a ferry ride and a walk ranging from 10 to 15 minutes in length. I prefer to bring my bike with me on the ferry. Anyone can do this free of charge.

Find a place to relax by the water with our list of the best beaches in Toronto.

1. Woodbine Beach

2. bluffer's beach, 3. kew-balmy beach, 4. centre island beach, toronto islands, 5. hanlan's point beach, toronto islands, 6. ward's island beach, toronto islands, 7. gibraltar beach, toronto islands, 8. rouge beach, 9. cherry beach, 10. sunnyside beach, 11. sugar beach, 12. hto beach, map of beaches in toronto, best time to go to the beach in toronto.

Woodbine Beach

Highlights: Action and urban vibe

One of the best true urban beaches and easily accessed beaches in Toronto, is Woodbine. This 15.2-acre hot spot for beach fun has long been a destination for a younger crowd looking to have a good time.

The beach is a long, curving arc of soft sand, some of the best in the city, and is backed by a boardwalk and treed area. The beach faces east, and a large headland on the south side of the beach protects it from strong winds. As a result, the waves stay small and the water tends to warm up nicely — a real bonus in chilly Lake Ontario.

Extensive volleyball courts with lithe bodies doing their best to get that perfect set and spike set up are located at the back of the beach. Pack a picnic lunch, or grab lunch at the fast food concession, ice-cream truck, or the full-service restaurant nearby.

Parking at Woodbine is extensive, but on hot weekends, the large lots still fill up. Note that there are three main lots; the largest is just off Eastern Avenue.

Bluffer's Beach

Highlights: Scenery and swimming

Bluffer's Beach is considered by many (especially those who live in Scarborough ) to be the most beautiful beach in Toronto. Beige-colored bluffs with flowering trees at their baseline the beach, while out front, lake Ontario sparkles in the sunshine. It's hard to believe that just behind you, a city of three million people exists.

This large beach has some of the softest sand of all the Toronto beaches and ample areas for just about anyone who wants to lay out in the sun and imagine they are in the Caribbean. Lifeguards are on duty and keep a watchful eye on bathers swimming and splashing about in the shallow water. Unlike other beaches in the Toronto area, the picnic tables and BBQs are not located at the back of the beach; at Bluffer's they are off to the right in a treed green space.

Parking for the beach is limited, and the lot closest to the beach fills up fast. However, another much larger parking lot is located one kilometer away, about a 15-minute walk along a wide, paved trail. Drop your gear and crew at the beach and then draw straws to see who has to go park the car and walk back!

Note that the iconic, steep bluffs so frequently photographed are not at the beach area. Those are at the far western edge of the park and quite a distance from the beach.

Boardwalk at Kew-Balmy Beach

The Kew-Balmy Beach area is located in the appropriately named area of Toronto called The Beaches . This stretch of sand begins roughly at the historic Leuty Lifesaving station, built in 1920, and runs for just over a kilometer, ending at the beautiful Art Deco-inspired RC Harris Water Treatment plant.

This beach has a calm vibe and more of a local feel, it's less about loud music and more about lying in the sun with a good book. For a more lively atmosphere, head to Woodbine Beach just a bit farther west. The sand here is generally coarse with a mix of small pebbles at the waterline. The shore is punctuated with seawalls that extend into the lake, especially near the eastern end of the beach.

The usual beach activities are popular here, plus the area is an ideal place to go kiteboarding . On days when the wind is blowing from the west, south, or east, you'll see the kiters racing across the waves.

A perfect day at Kew-Balmy Beach might look like this: Go early and snag a good parking spot, walk down the tree-lined streets to the beach, set up your gear, and settle in. Once you start feeling hungry, wander up to Queen Street East and settle onto a patio for a long, lingering lunch. Stroll back down to the beach and perhaps have a nap in the sun until it's time to head home.

An alternative version of this plan is to stay on the beach all day and then hit a patio for an early dinner prior to heading home.

Centre Island Beach, Toronto Islands

Highlights: Calm water perfect for families with children

Hitting the beach on the Toronto Islands is a full-day excursion but one that is well worth the effort. The busiest beach and the first one you come to if you take the Centre Island ferry is Centre Island Beach.

This stretch of sand is right at the end of the one-kilometer walkway that leads you through a wooded area, over a couple of bridges, and past a beautiful set of gardens. The waters here are calm and warm owing to the large rock breakwater just offshore. It may not be the best beach on the island, but it is certainly the most popular and the one with the most facilities.

The view from the beach is the best on the island: uninterrupted vistas stretch in front of you in a 180-degree arc. It's the most lively of the four beaches on the Toronto Islands and on a hot summer weekend, it will be packed with people of all ages. A pier extends from the shoreline with a viewing platform at the end.

The beach has changerooms, bathrooms, bike rentals, lockers, and a concession selling cold drinks, pizza, and snacks.

Hanlan's Point Beach

Highlights: Best Beach in Toronto for wind-related watersports

Located off on its own on the western side of the island, this beach has some of the best sand on the island. The back of the beach is treed with sand dunes covered in vegetation. A one-kilometer section of Hanlan's Point Beach near the south end is the only clothing-optional beach in Toronto. Don't worry, though, a majority of the beach is clothing mandatory.

Owing to its location near Toronto's Island Airport, a steady stream of small planes take off and land, providing some visual entertainment. Other visual stimuli include the kiteboarders at the northwest end of the beach. Hanlan's Point Beach faces southwest and is one of the best places on the island to see the sunset.

Be sure to take the Hanlan's Point ferry when departing from Toronto . It's a smaller car ferry and much less crowded. It also runs east to west across Toronto Harbour making for a more scenic ride than the Centre Island ferry. Count on a 15-minute walk from the ferry terminal to the best part of the beach.

Ward's Island Beach, Toronto Islands

Highlights: The closest beach to the best restaurants

Located at the far eastern end of the island , Ward's Island Beach is a pleasant arc of sand with views out towards Cherry Beach on the Toronto Port Lands. This beach has the added advantage of being close to many of the island's best patios, so if you need a bite to eat, it's only a short stroll to satisfy that craving.

The beach itself is wide, with small trees in behind, however, they don't provide much shade, so be sure to bring an umbrella. Break up your day with a stroll down the long boardwalk on the right-hand side of the beach.

Count on a 10-minute walk from the Ward's Island ferry terminal to the beach. Be sure you take the Ward's Island ferry , not the Centre Island ferry, or you'll face a long walk!

Gibraltar Beach, Toronto Islands

If the scene at Centre Island Beach is too much for you, head east to Gibraltar Beach. Perhaps one of the more overlooked beaches on the island, Gibraltar Beach has a wonderful stretch of sand and is rarely busy. The beach is long and wide; a metal breakwater marks the southern end.

Behind the beach, providing shade, are large cottonwood trees, an area that is hard to pass by because it's just so perfect for setting up a beach chair and settling into a good book. If you need a break from the sun and sand, take a short stroll back from the beach across the small road to the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse. It dates from 1808 and is supposedly haunted.

Gibraltar Point Beach is about a one-minute walk from the Centre Island ferry terminal - it's best to take the Centre Island ferry . Alternatively, the Hanlan's Point ferry is an option, but it's a longer walk, and if you do this, you'll probably just end up at Hanlan's Point since it's the nicer of the two beaches.

Rouge Beach

Highlights: A beach on Lake Ontario with warm water

Beautiful Rouge Beach is at the southern tip of Rouge National Urban Park , Canada's newest national park. The Rouge River enters Lake Ontario on the left side of the beach, bringing warmer water into chilly Lake Ontario.

This beach is rarely crowded; if you crave space this is the place to come. The beach stretches for roughly 500 meters, and a trail runs through the trees along the back of the beach. Off the beach and near the parking area is marsh, an ideal place for wildlife spotting, paddling, or kayaking.

Paddleboarding at Rouge Beach

The views out over Lake Ontario from Rouge Beach to the south and west are quite beautiful, although the sight of the Pickering Nuclear Generating plant to the east is a bit jarring.

Cherry Beach

Highlights: Lovely picnic areas under mature trees

Cherry Beach is perhaps one of Toronto's most overlooked beaches. Located in the Port Lands area of Toronto , this gem of a beach is protected on three sides from the wind. From the roundabout, the beach is split into two areas east and west of the lifeguard station; parking on the east side is easier.

One of the great things about this beach is the area off the sand; in behind are large mature trees and a grassy area complete with picnic tables and BBQs. The beach itself has relatively coarse sand, and bathers should be aware that the water drops off quite steeply.

On windy days, kiteboarders and windsurfers put on an entertaining show, while sailors do their thing farther offshore.

Swan on Sunnyside Beach

Highlights: Easy to access and lots for kids to do off the beach

The beach at Sunnyside is actually a series of four beaches: three named Sunnyside, and one named after Sir Casmir Gzowski. No matter which beach you choose, you'll find a narrow stretch of sand backed by a boardwalk, trees, and an open green space with picnic tables.

The beaches are protected by an offshore breakwater, making the water along the shore calm at all times. The breakwater also pens in the lake water, allowing it to warm up in the shallow enclosure.

A café in the historic Sunnyside Pavilion has one of the best beachfront patios in the city. See if you can snag a table here and watch the non-stop progression of people parading up and down the Sunnyside Boardwalk.

Parking here is easy, with extensive lots just back from the beach. If you feel like a stroll, just take Colborne Lodge Drive north under the Gardiner Expressway and walk up to High Park, one of the best parks in Toronto .

Note that after heavy rainfall, Sunnyside Beach tends to be closed for swimming owing to the nearby Humber River.

Pink umbrellas on Sugar Beach

One of two beaches that you can't swim at in Ontario, Sugar Beach still gets a mention because of its funky vibe. The roughly triangular beach has permanent pink sun umbrellas and Muskoka chairs set in some of Ontario's softest sand. Back from the beach is a tree-lined promenade and several giant rocks painted in colorful stripes.

This is a place for hanging out with your friends and catching up on the latest gossip while undertaking some serious people watching, and checking out the lively scene. The beach is located across from the Redpath Sugar factory, hence the name Sugar Beach.

HTO Beach

Similar in nature to Sugar Beach, HTO Beach is a non-swimming beach . More wide-open and less industrial than Sugar Beach, HTO Beach offers easy access to the waterfront for the residents living in the concrete box towers of downtown Toronto.

A play on the chemical make of water, H 2 O (the T from Toronto is substituted for the "2" in the chemical formula) HTO is more than just sand. Here, you'll also find 16 acres of green space, benches, Muskoka chairs, and giant yellow umbrellas. There's nothing quite like sitting here soaking up the sun and gazing out at the sailboats making their way back and forth through Toronto Harbour.

The best time to get your fix of sun and sand in Toronto is in July and August . At this time, the summer sun is at its hottest and the sweltering humidity that southern Ontario is famous for will have fully arrived. The 12 beaches above provide a welcome respite, although the hot weather brings out the crowds. If summer arrives early, June is also a good option.

In order to secure a parking spot, you'll need to plan to be at the beach early. Any later, and the roads are sometimes closed as the parking lots reach capacity.

One thing to bear in mind: Although the crystal-clear water looks especially inviting, the highest summer water temperature in Lake Ontario is a bracing 24.5 degrees Celsius (76.1 degrees Fahrenheit), and that's in August. June and July are substantially cooler. For reference, a typical backyard pool temperature is 28 Celsius (82 F).

Pros and Cons of Travel Agencies in Toronto

Travel agencies are the go-to solutions for most people because of convenience and level of expertise. Along with the benefits that travel agencies offer are the downsides of using their services.

  • Offers convenience
  • Can find good deals
  • Offers special perks like discounts or complimentary upgrades
  • Makes trips less stressful
  • Saves time and money
  • Can assist in troubleshooting travel snags
  • Provides a level of personalization
  • Helps you get the most out of your trip
  • Reachable during business hours only
  • May charge commission on every sale
  • Some travel agencies may not always offer the least inexpensive options
  • Some hotels may offer benefits if you book directly through their website

Is It Worth It To Use a Travel Agency?

Using a travel agency is worth it if you plan an important trip with a big group but do not have the time to take care of the details. The agency may be able to find you good deals and bulk-buying options and get the best value for your money without you exerting effort.

Travel agents have the means to look for better deals and can often provide better prices. Because agents are privy to money-saving promotions, they can offer you good deals.

There is no industry standard in how much you should pay a travel agent. When it comes to travel quotes, travel agents may charge a service fee ranging from $50 to $500, depending on their experience and knowledge.

Some travel agents in Canada charge for air-only, hotel bookings and counselling. Other agents will charge for planning long trips and customizing travels.

Booking directly through the airline is sometimes more convenient and offers the cheapest flights. If there are price changes after your ticket purchase, the airline may refund the difference directly to you.

Ask family members, friends, and colleagues about their experiences using travel agents in Canada. Word-of-mouth referrals from people you trust are often the most effective way of finding what you need.
