Hungary is a popular, enchanting, landlocked nation located in Central Europe . Right from the several quaint villages to the beautiful city of lights, Budapest , and the fantastic scenery, Hungary exudes a strong sense of tradition and history at every turn.

The Danube River bisects this capital city, and you can watch the eye-catching river and city view by going for a boat ride in the river waters. Also, Hungary has rich culture and history that feature Roman, Magyar, Turkish, and Slavic influences . You can discover spectacular remains of Roman fortifications that belong to the Middle Ages.

Hungary Entry Restrictions in Response to Coronavirus

In early 2020,  Hungary joined the rest of its Schengen country neighbours in closing its borders  due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country has since partially reopened its borders, with conditions.

Hungarian citizens are allowed to enter Hungary without a need for an entry permit or PCR test regardless of the purpose of their stay but are required to isolate for 10 days, or until they are able to present two negative PCR tests performed two days apart.

Non-Hungarian citizens can only enter Hungary for exceptional cases depending on the purpose of stay or if they fall into an exemption, like someone who has recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months prior to their date of entry, if they hold a Hungarian immunity certificate or an immunity certificate recognised by Hungary based on unilateral/bilateral agreements , etc. You can find the entry restrictions on the Hungarian government’s  webpage . They will also need an entry permit , which can be found on the Hungarian police's website .

You should check on the latest news regarding restrictions, quarantine or whether a test will be required either from  reliable news sources , the  Hungarian government website , or the  UK government website  one to two weeks before your trip to be aware of the latest requirements for travelling to Hungary.

The  EU Digital COVID Certificate  was available starting  1 July 2021 , provides proof that a person has either:

  • been vaccinated against COVID-19
  • received a negative test result, PCR or rapid antigen,
  • or has recovered from COVID-19

The EU Digital COVID Certificate grants travellers the same rights as vaccinated, tested or recovered citizens of the EU Member State they are visiting and allows travel into the EU.

EU citizens and residents can have their Digital COVID Certificates issued and verified across the EU. You can find out about how Hungary is handling their EUDCC on  their website .

Who needs a visa to travel to Hungary from the UK?

Hungary is a Schengen country , which allows for free movement between the 26 EU and EFTA states (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland) . A uniform Schengen visa issued by one of the Schengen states is valid for travel within the whole Schengen area.

The rules for travelling or working in European countries changed on 1 January 2021:

  • you can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training
  • if you are travelling to Hungary and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days
  • for long-stay visits, to work or study, for business or for other reasons, you will need to meet the Hungarian government’s entry requirements.
  • if you stay in Hungary with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • show you have enough money for your stay

There are separate requirements for those who are residents of Hungary. If you are resident in Hungary, you should carry proof of residence as well as your valid passport when you travel. You should also check your passport’s validity when you travel and renew it if you don’t have enough time on it. Your passport must be:

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Hungary or any other Schengen country
  • less than 10 years old

Find out more on these requirements, in the UK government's Living in Hungary guide .

Citizens of the following countries residing in the UK and planning to visit Hungary are required to get a Hungarian Schengen visa in order to be able to enter Hungary.

The main requirement is that you must have a UK residence permit valid for at least another three more months beyond the date you plan to leave Hungary or the Schengen Area.

Before starting a visa application, or getting a flight to Hungary, make sure to check whether you need a visa to Hungary or not.

If you have a 3-month UK visa you can extend it for three more months in order to be eligible to apply for a Hungary Schengen visa from within the UK. You must apply for an extension before your visa expires and while you’re still in the UK.

Note : You can stay in the UK until the decision about the extension is taken, but only if you have applied within the visa period.

You should apply for a Hungary visa at the appropriate Hungary Embassy/Consulate or Hungary visa application center in the UK if:

  • Hungary is the only Schengen country you plan on visiting
  • Hungary is your main destination (the country you will be staying the longest in)
  • Hungary is the first Schengen country you are visiting (when spending an equal amount of days in Hungary and another Schengen country)

In case you plan on staying in Hungary for more than 90 days you must apply for a residency permit, not a Hungary Schengen visa.

Please, note that if you are not a resident in the United Kingdom you should apply at the Hungary Embassy/Consulate/VAC in your home country of residence.

The visa interview is a meeting between you and the consular officer/interviewer. During this interview, the consular officer will ask you several questions about you and your intended trip. You will also be submitting the required documents throughout the meeting, to the interviewer.

Since Hungary is a Schengen country, the visa fees are the same as any other Schengen visa.

The fee must be paid upon submitting the Hungary visa application. After you complete this payment, you will receive a receipt, which shows that payment has been made, which must be offered amongst other documents of the application. You will have to pay a Hungary Schengen visa fee in order for your application to be processed. Find out about the Schengen visa fee in our blog post:  Schengen Visa Fees – How Much Does a Schengen Visa Cost?

Step 6: Receive your visa

You can apply for a Hungary Schengen Visa 6 months before your planned trip. Depending on the nationality of the applicant, the processing time may take at least 15 days from the day of application. In some cases when required documents are missing from the application, this process may take longer.

Therefore, to avoid unwanted complications, the Hungary Consulate General in London advises that you provide all required documents and submit your application at least 20 workdays (4 weeks) before the day you leave for Hungary.

Hungary Schengen Visa Application Decision

  • Approved – Once your visa is approved, it will be stamped in your passport. Make sure to carefully check the visa sticker to make sure everything is correct and exactly how you need it.
  • Rejected – if your visa has been rejected, it would have been for a specific reason and you have the right to appeal.

hungary tourist visa application uk

  • Marriage certificate missing – if you are applying for a visa for family reasons, you may have to prove family ties. This is why you must provide a marriage certificate
  • You applied for the wrong visa – it is your responsibility to apply for the correct visa depending on how long you are going to Hungary for and your reason for travelling there
  • It is not clear that you plan to return to the UK – it must be clear that you intend to return to the UK before the visa expires. If the visa staff have doubts about this, your visa will be rejected
  • The purpose of your trip cannot be established – the reason why you are planning to go to Hungary must be made clear. You can do this by providing specific documents like a full itinerary, work contract or invitation letter, etc.

If you receive a negative answer in your Hungary Schengen visa application, this does not mean you cannot ever travel to Hungary. You have two options.

  • File an appeal for Hungary Schengen visa rejection if you believe that the decision to deny you a visa is unjust. You should have a strong basis for your complaint. You can appeal this decision by writing an appeal letter for a Hungary Schengen visa rejection.
  • Reapply by correcting the mistakes you did in your previous application. Or improve your situation to comply with the eligibility criteria for a Hungary Schengen Visa.

Hungary Schengen Visa Extension

A person visiting Hungary on a Schengen visa is allowed by law to extend their visa if they have legitimate reasons. This could be either personal, professional, medical, emergency, or any other. The decisions to approve a Schengen visa extension request are handled case by case.

The duration you are allowed to stay in the country is stated in your  Schengen visa sticker . It is important not to overstay during your trip to Hungary or the rest of the Schengen Zone or risk facing penalties like a fine, deportation, being banned from travelling back to the Schengen Zone, and having difficulties in your future Schengen applications.

Find out more about overstaying in the Schengen visa in our  blog post .

If you wish to extend your visa and stay longer in the Schengen Zone, then you need to start getting ready for your application. The overall process of extending your HungarySchengen visa will involve:

  • Determining whether you have a justified reason to request for an extension
  • Submitting all the necessary documents . These include a valid passport that has the Schengen Visa used to get in the Schengen area stamped in it, one passport-sized photo, proof of financial subsistence, Schengen Visa Insurance that covers the extension duration, and all the documents that justify your reason for an extension
  • Paying visa fees where applicable
  • Attending a visa interview if necessary
  • Waiting for the approval

Page contents, overview of travel to the uk from hungary, short-term uk visas for hungarians, long-term uk visas for hungarians, how can ias help, frequently asked questions.

The number of Hungarians resident in the UK has risen dramatically in the past couple of decades since Hungary joined the European Union.

There are an estimated 100,000 Hungarians currently in the UK, but the actual number could be anything as twice as much as this. Whatever the number, it’s evident that the UK is an increasingly popular travel destination for many Hungarians.

If you’re a Hungarian looking to come to the UK, there are a range of visas and immigration options available to you.

Some may only allow for short-term stays, such as if you want to do certain forms of temporary work or get married in the UK, whereas others are longer-term and may allow you to apply for permanent residence (known as indefinite leave to remain ).

Reviews.io Logo

The UK has a range of short-term visas to allow people to come and visit the UK.

Note that if you’re planning to visit the UK from Hungary for tourism purposes, to study short-term, or to visit family or friends, you will not need to apply for a UK visa.

However, you may need to apply for a visa if you wish to do certain activities in the UK, such as paid or unpaid work, among other things. These visas include the following:

  • Charity Worker visa (for temporary volunteer work in the UK)
  • Marriage Visitor visa (for people who wish to get married in the UK)
  • Government Authorised Exchange visa (for people who wish to undertake work experience, training, or participate in a government-authorised exchange scheme)
  • Seasonal Worker visa (for people who wish to work in short-term seasonal jobs in horticulture or poultry)
  • Creative Worker visa (for people who have been offered a role in the creative industries)

Many of these visas will allow you to stay in the UK for varying amounts of time. Some may be valid for only a few months, whereas some may be valid for a year or more.

However, with all of these visas, you will be expected to leave the UK and return back to Hungary after your visa expires.

If you’re a Hungarian looking to live in the UK longer-term, there are also many visas that will allow you to do so.

Some of these are work-oriented and will rely on you having a valid job offer in the UK as a prerequisite. Meanwhile, others are based around moving to the UK on account of having partners or family members who can support your application.

Viable long-term UK visas include the following:

  • Skilled Worker visa (for general long-term skilled workers in many different professions)
  • Health and Care Worker visa (healthcare and care work professionals)
  • Scale-up Worker visa (for people who wish to work with a rapidly growing business in the UK)
  • Spouse visa (for those who wish to live in the UK with their British or Irish spouse)
  • Family visa (for those who wish to live in the UK with an eligible family member)

All of these visas, and many others, will allow you to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after spending a certain amount of time in the UK.

After applying for ILR, you will be able to live and work in the UK without the need for an employer or a family member sponsoring you.

What people say about us

Hungary visa policy.

Hungary is a Schengen country with the same laws as other nations in the Schengen Union. Under their visa policy, any visitor coming to the country must hold a visa unless they are from a visa-exempt country. This policy conforms to the European Union’s visa policy programs which incorporate the individual programs of member states. Holders of visas issued by Hungary enjoy free access to passport-free zones in the Schengen Area.

Under the same policy, citizens of Schengen countries don’t need visas to enter Hungary, nor do they need passports; with just their ID cards, they can visit and stay for as long as they wish and engage in any legal activity as part of the Schengen protocol. However, non-EU citizens must have to hold valid passports for at least six months, and they can only visit for business, tourism, or transit. Those from non-visa-exempt countries must have valid visas.

Schengen Visa For Hungary

The Schengen visa for Hungary is open to nationals from nearly 200 countries and territories. If your country is on the Schengen visa list, it means that you are not allowed to visit without a visa. This visa is issued by the Hungarian embassy to the applicant in person, allowing them to visit all member states of the Union for a total of 90 days combined. Applicants must fill out an application for me, attach relevant documents, and submit them to the Consulate or Embassy for approval.

Although there are works in the pipeline for applicants to apply for Schengen visas online, the European Commission has not finalized the process yet, so online applications for Schengen visas are not possible.

Hungary ETIAS

Schengen visas are to non visa-exempt visitors as ETIAS is to visa-exempt visitors. Before now, Al visa-exempt visitors needed to visit Hungary was valid passports, and they were good to go. However, all this changed with the launch of the Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System. While they can still visit Hungary without visas, they must apply for this authorization online.

The European Commission has made it clear that pre-registration for Etias will be mandatory from the beginning of 2024 for all visa-free visitors from outside the Schengen zone.

ETIAS is a multi-entry electronic permit that clears a visitor for visits. The project is a pre-screening program for detecting persons who may pose any kind of threat to Hungary or neighboring nations. The sole purpose of Etias is to increase border security, and it is available in different forms, such as business, tourism, transit, and medical treatment. Holders of ETIAS can stay in Hungary for 90 days in 180 days.

Key Information About Hungary ETIAS

Before completing your ETIAS application, take your time to read these important details to guide your actions.

Only For Visa-Exempt Visitors:  This online authorization is only for visitors who hold passports of visa-exempt countries. Once ETIAS becomes active in 2024, it will become mandatory for visitors from visa-exempt countries. If you are not from a visa-exempt country, apply for a Schengen visa instead.

Primary Destination Rule:  According to Schengen rules, visitors with the intention to visit multiple countries in the Schengen zone must make their way to the country that issued the authorization first before going to a different country. As a first-time user, make sure you visit Hungary first if you wish to visit multiple countries.

The 180-Day Cycle:  Always respect the 180-day cycle for visitors. According to the rules, visitors must stay for at most 90 days within a 180-day period. If you have any intention of staying for much longer, you should get a national visa instead. Or better still, exit the Schengen zone, then re-enter once the last cycle is complete. The cycle starts counting when you set foot in any country in the Schengen zone.

Use Same Passport:  Your ETIAS is attached to your passport, so make sure you always travel with the same passport anytime you visit Hungary or any country in the Schengen zone.

Not For Work:  This approval is not for work. You must not seek or enter into any employment contract during your visit.

Expiration:  Your ETIAS expires in one of two ways. After three years from the day it is approved or once the passport it is attached to expires or whichever comes first. If your passport will expire in less than 6 months, apply for a new one before applying for the ETIAS.

Security Screening:  Once you submit your data, the system will screen multiple Ross security databases within and outside Europe. Applications that trigger security alert risks will be denied, while those that do not will be approved. However, the European Commission has noted that persons denied may apply and be accepted based on their circumstances. Also, note that applications not accepted or denied will be forwarded to the Local unit of the Hungarian authorities for manual vetting.

Hungary: New immigration law affects residence permits

Flag of Hungary

A new immigration law entered into force on 1 January 2024 in Hungary, introducing major changes and stricter conditions to existing regulations for third-country nationals (TCNs).

The application of the new regulations was planned to begin on 1 March 2024, but the implementation rules (executive decrees and detailed provisions) have not yet been announced. The submission of new applications from TCNs has therefore been suspended, except those involving residence permits 'of national interest' based on ministerial approval. In cases where an application was submitted before 31 December 2023, the old regulations will still apply but the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing will not make a decision before 1 March 2024. The validity of residence permits and permanent residence permits expiring between 1 January 2024 and 29 February 2024 will be automatically extended until 30 April 2024 .

The previous immigration law in Hungary specified 18 types of residence permits. The new regulation outlines 24 types, including 8 for the purpose of employment. The residence permit for other purposes, which was a rather flexible category, has been abolished. One of the biggest changes is that the new law introduces separate categories of work permits for highly-skilled workers and low-skilled guest workers ,   and a new permit for investors.

The guest worker residence permit will only be granted, by law, to those employed by specified employers, from specified countries, and in specified occupations. Moreover, the guest worker permit can now only be extended for a limited period, up to a total of 3 years. After this period the permit cannot be extended, and a new application must be submitted. Guest workers, therefore, are not entitled to permanent residence in Hungary, or to family reunification.

The new law also introduces a so-called “golden visa”. From 1 July 2024, the guest-investor visa and residence permit will be available, allowing a residence of 10+10 years for a minimum real estate fund investment of 250 000 EUR. The detailed provisions for this have not yet been published.

Certain residence permits can only be extended if the relevant applicant fulfils the conditions of 'social coexistence', which must be proved by taking an exam about Hungarian culture.
