Best of the Azores: 7 days in São Miguel

Really good communication from Tour Radar throughout my trip. I felt safe, supported and well informed. The tour itself is well thought out and included most of my meals! The guide, Philip, was really informative and had a good sense of humour. He was flexible to our needs and always made sure everyone was having a good time. Great if you are a solo traveler and want to explore with others.

All went well. Isabelle was very giid and knowledgeable and informative Traveling between island I'm the Azores is time consuming but getting us to the airport two and a half hours before the flight was a waste of a morning You seem to be the only operator who visits four islands, please continue. If you're going there you want to see as much as possible

Overall the tour was good. The response coordinating the trip was great. They did change 1 item on the itinerary but it was no problem. I didn't like the location of the hotel. There was nothing close by (shops, restaurants, etc.). This also wasn't a tour where you were with the same group of people. It was more solo where you met different people on different days and no one stayed in the same location so very little group bonding. It was nice on the days I had the rental car so I was able to get out to stores, restaurants and sights. The last day there was a dinner but it was so far from the location of the hotel, I didn't even bother going. Note: the canyoning was well worth it!

What people love about azores archipelago tours.

The hikes and info were great, even though some last minute changes were necessary due to trail closures. We had a fun, varied group of 13 and the logistics all worked well. The only disappointment was Hotel Zenite on Terceira Island - it was an aging hotel with poor service and should be replaced with a different hotel in the same area.
We had a fantastic time. Exploring the island through jeep tour and kayaking was exhilarating. The whale watching and local food experiences were delightful, and the guides were truly local and knowledgeable. This tour was an unforgettable journey, would take it again, thank yuou.
A very beautiful place with wonderful landscapes, thermal baths, cheese and wine. Our guide Sasha was lovely and very informative as well as delightful to talk too. I enjoyed all the activities but do ensure you were good shoes for the home. recommend that a visit to the cheese factory is added the morning you arrive on Sao Jorge.

Choose between a dip in relaxing waters and a visit to a gorgeous botanical garden. For the first choice, take a dip into the warm, mineral-enriched waters of the Terra Nostra pool. While you soak in the thermal spring waters, take in the gorgeous surrounding views of Terra Nostra Park and the Valley of Furnas. Savor the views in addition to appreciating the history; the pool was built in the 18th century by the American consul to the Azores. Your second choice is to embark on a guided visit to the organic paradise that is the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. From colorful flowers to palm trees, aquatic plants, bamboo, azaleas, and more, stroll through the garden alongside your guide to see what’s in bloom.

Choose between two museums today. For your first choice, visit the Horta Museum and see Baroque artwork as well as exhibitions of religious paintings that illustrate gold and silversmithing and ivory. Walk through spaces adorned with antique furniture and pianos from the 19th and 20th centuries. Your second choice is a visit to the Scrimshaw Museum, featuring engraved whalebones and teeth from sperm whales. The fascinating collection showcases works by the best scrimshaw artists on the Faial islands. Exhibitions preserve the history of whaling and spirit of adventure that is a core part of the Azores. Make your way through the history of whaling and the scrimshaw artistry at this lovely museum located in one of the most famous sailing Cafes in the world.

Extend your stay in Portugal with 3 nights in Lisbon – the country’s vibrant capital city. See the city like never before – zooming to the famous sights via tuk-tuk and tram! Enjoy ample free time to discover Lisbon’s hidden charms on your own. Take advantage of the city’s savory cuisine, lively energy, and colorful promenades.

  • Experience Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city where old traditions intermingle with modern twists. See the city on a lively tuk-tuk tour, zooming through the urban energy from the back seat of an open-air vehicle. Venture through the city's beloved neighborhoods. After becoming acquainted with the area, enjoy the rest of your day at leisure to explore on your own.
  • See the city from a different perspective - via tram! With a local guide, hop on and learn to navigate this widespread trolley system! Your guide will take you to Lisbon’s famous sights, including Jeronimo’s Monastery (UNESCO), the Monument to the Discoveries, and the Tower of Belem (UNESCO). Make the most of an afternoon to yourself, perhaps taking the historic tram to the vibrant Alfama district. Gather in the evening for dinner in a local restaurant, getting a taste of some of Portugal’s favorite flavors.
  • The day is yours! Take advantage of your day at leisure; maybe stroll along Praça do Comércio, or even make your way to the São Jorge Castle for a sprawling panorama of the city.
  • Wish Lisbon goodbye as you depart for home.

Taste your way through the unique, natural flavors of São Miguel. This afternoon, stop at a local gin production facility, where traditional botanical ingredients like rosemary and juniper are blended with local, sustainably sourced seaweed. Drinks and bottles of gin sold here support marine conservation locally, through a donation to the Ocean Azores Foundation. Enjoy a light, farmhouse-style lunch on the beautiful grounds of the facility. Cap off this afternoon excursion with a visit to a pineapple plantation that is more than 100 years old. You’ll see the plantation and where the pineapples grow before getting the chance to sip on an expertly prepared pineapple cocktail.

This morning, see what lies on the western side of Terceira Island. Take in the beautiful coastal views along the way before visiting a banana plantation, where bright green banana leaves and blue skies meet. After sipping on coffee and sampling some bananas or other seasonal fruits, you’ll visit a family-owned cheese factory. The family owns cows that roam freely with plenty of space and grass at a nearby farm, and many say the milk of these “happy cows” leads to a tastier cheese. After learning about the production process and the family history, gather for a light lunch of local products.

Indulge your taste buds and connect with Portuguese cuisine and culture at a home-hosted meal where local wines and petiscos, or Portuguese tapas, will be the start of a great night! Enjoy different wines, liquors and taste some of Portugal's and the Azores iconic foods. Portugal has been producing and exporting wine since the age of the ancient Romans – and it’s only gotten better with time! Relax at this local home and feel as if you are meeting an old friend!

Escorted tour

Island-hop around the verdant, volcanic azores.

Situated in the centre of the gloriously green Azores archipelago, the islands of Faial, São Jorge, and Pico form a triangle rich in natural beauty and local culture.

This ten-night holiday gives you a full introduction to the region, with a few nights in each location and visits to the highlights of each isle.

On a tour of Faial, you'll see the mighty volcanic Caldeira which rises high above the island. There will also be a trip to the sea-facing Capelinhos volcano and the iconic Ponta dos Capelinhos lighthouse which stands below.

While exploring Sao Jorge, you can look forward to the greenery of Sete Fontes Forest Park and the picture-perfect viewpoints of Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã do Ouvidor, as well as visits to welcoming local villages where you can enjoy handicrafts and traditional cooking. There's also the chance to hike to Caldeira do Santo Cristo, a vast volcano crater, rich in geological formations.

On Pico, you'll visit Portugal's longest lava tube which is over three miles long, and witness rich bird and plant life while enjoying stunning views of the ocean and neighbouring islands.

As well as guided excursions there'll be plenty of free time too, for you to explore the Azores at your own pace. Perhaps you'll choose to go whale and dolphin watching, or hike another of the unbeatably scenic trails.

You will travel between the islands by ferry, taking in heavenly ocean vistas as you go. Throughout the trip, you'll be staying in comfortable hotels on or close to the coast, adding an Atlantic touch to your stay.

After your first Azorean breakfast, you'll head off by minibus for a fascinating day tour of Faial Island. Your guide will take you to the volcanic Caldeira, an immense crater where you can look out to the ocean and admire the neighbouring Pico Island.

You'll also visit the volcano of Capelinhos on the tip of the Capelo peninsula, the famous Ponta dos Capelinhos lighthouse and see the newest section of Faial Island, whose dark, rocky terrain was formed in 1957 during an eruption. There'll be time to visit the volcano information centre to learn more about these intriguing landscapes.

After breakfast, you'll take a ferry ride to São Jorge via Pico Island. The journey takes around two hours in total. Have your cameras at the ready for snapshots of the Atlantic as you make your way across.

You'll check in at Hotel São Jorge Garden, where your room will have a balcony, overlooking the hotel garden and the Atlantic waters.

Then it's time for the day's activities. You can abseil down waterfalls and slide along streams during a canyoning session, or you might choose to take some of the hiking trails in the area, enjoying all the verdant scenery this island has to offer. All these optional activities can be booked in advance.

After breakfast you'll embark on an island tour, visiting several of São Jorge most famous sites.

Marvel at the local handicrafts in Ribeira do Nabo before continuing to the welcoming local villages of Urzelina and Manadas. You'll stop at the eighteenth-century Santa Barbara Church before recharging with lunch in a Calheta village restaurant.

You'll then spend the afternoon exploring the pretty parish of Ribeira Seca and the coffee plantation of Fajã dos Vimes and heading up to the viewpoints of Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã do Ouvidor.

Finally, you'll have time to venture into the Sete Fontes Forest Park with its splendid natural sights.

Today you'll have two excursions to choose from as you explore the Caldeira do Santo Cristo, a stunning area offering spectacular coastal views and exotic flora and fauna.

The first option is a truly rewarding 10km walk. The walk begins at a height of 700m on the Serra do Topo hillside. The route is initially steep as you descend (so this is best suited to regular walkers) but the views are well worth it.

When you reach the Caldeira do Santo Cristo you can take a dip in the lagoon and enjoy a picnic lunch. The lagoon is formed by a natural sea wall of volcanic rock. From here it's a further 4km to Fajã dos Cubres, where the walk ends.

Option two is a relaxed walk from Fajã dos Cubres to Caldeira do Santo Cristo which is much flatter and covers a total of 8km. Lunch and swimming at the Caldeira are both included.

After breakfast, you will be taken to the harbour for the ferry to Pico Island, once again being treated to beautiful views over the water. The ferry ride will take about one hour and twenty minutes in total, after which you'll be transferred to your hotel, Hotel Caravelas, where you'll have time to check in and settle into your room.

You'll have a balcony with either an ocean or a mountain view, where you can relax with a drink before another busy day tomorrow.

After breakfast at your hotel, you'll set off to explore the island. Your tour will take you to the island's central plateau, where you will experience beautiful views of the ocean and discover the volcanic origins of the island.

What was once a hostile volcanic hotspot is now a celebration of biodiversity, with hundreds of native plant species now making it their home.

Following a picnic lunch, the adventure continues with a guided tour of Portugal's longest lava tube, Gruta das Torres, which can be explored on foot. Torches and helmets are provided during your visit to this geological wonder.

Today you'll have a free day to spend exploring the Azores with more exciting optional activities. The archipelago is internationally famed as a site for whales and dolphins, and no visit to this part of the world is complete without a trip to spot them in the wild.

Try a stunning whale and dolphin watching tour and feel the thrill of seeing these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Even better, you can book to swim with dolphins to get an even closer look at these intelligent creatures.

Today you'll check out of Hotel Caravelas and catch the ferry back to Faial. This ferry ride makes a brilliant vantage point to admire the islands from the water.

Once back on land, you'll check back into Hotel do Canal and have the rest of the day free to explore the island independently or simply relax at the hotel.

After breakfast you will have the day free to spend as you wish. You might like to explore more of Horta, or simply unwind in the hotel Jacuzzi.

Better still, you can continue your adventures on Faial by booking an optional half-day or a full day hike on one of the island's scenic routes. You can return to the Caldeira and walk around its rim or follow the old Levada aqueduct system ringed by greenery.

After one last Azorean breakfast, it's time to transfer to the airport for your journey home.

Around Caldeira Trail – Private Tour in Faial

The trail around the rim of Caldeira is the highest trail on Faial. Caldeira is a very unique volcanic collapse crater because the high altitude allows for a geological interpretation of most of Faial’s characteristics. The interior of the Caldeira is one of the most important nature preservation sites in the Azores.

Our Island - Guide to the Azores - Banana Trip Pico

Banana Trip – Private Tour in Pico

The Banana Trip is a full day cultural tour in Pico island. Usually, we focus on the South coast of Pico island. We will learn about the wine culture and the UNESCO World Heritage vineyards landscape. And we will better understand the importance of the Azores Whaling culture, by visiting a few heritage sites, like the Whaling Museum.

A traditional lunch is included at Lajes village. In between, we will appreciate several natural tide pools and visit the interior of the island, Pico Central Plateau. We call it Banana Trip, because the final goal is to visit our own banana plantation. To check and see if there’s a ripe bunch of bananas, ready to harvest.

The Banana Trip is a private cultural tour in Pico island that offers an exclusive experience. The price includes all expenses from Faial island and back.

Our Island - Guide to the Azores - Caldeira Descent

Caldeira Descent – Private Tour in Faial

The Caldeira of Faial has been a natural reserve since 1972 (category I – IUCN). It’s a volcanic collapse crater with unique characteristics. Since the Caldeira of Faial Descent is such a special experience, Faial Natural Park controls the access to the bottom, issuing only a limited number of permits. For this reason, a certified guide is mandatory for the Caldeira Descent.

A glorious meandering of these enchanting islands takes in crater lakes and thermal pools, whale-watching coasts, and wonderful views, vineyards and luxuriant landscapes

In the middle of the northern Atlantic Ocean, the nine islands of the Azores were formed by the activity of 1,766 volcanos. Most are submerged beneath the waves, many are now massive craters, and nine are still active. This is the backdrop to a fabulous tour of four islands, as it takes you by air, road and sea, to view marine life, and magnificent landscapes.

The ‘green island’ of São Miguel is the largest and lushest, and home to half of all Azoreans. Scenically stunning from its sandy shores to thermal pools and geysers, it excels itself around the Lagoa de Fogo (lake of fire) and the Sete Cidades’ two crater lakes, spread below Vista do Rei. Nicknamed the Lilac Island, Terceira boasts the natural bathing pools of Biscoitos, the beaches of Praia across the bay from old-town Praia da Vitoria, and the beautiful town of Angra do Heroísmo, steeped in history and UNESCO listed. Faial, named for its beech trees (faias) but known as Blue Island for its hundreds of hydrangeas, is home to the Caldeira Nature Park and Horta’s whale-watching harbour; just a ferry away from Pico, a majestic mountain soaring from the sea, its cone intact, its ‘Black Island’ epithet pointing to vineyards planted in dark volcanic soil. The Azores are awesome.

  • Take the Day for a Hiking Adventure: With its many gorgeous mountains and waterfalls, it’s no surprise that Madeira has long been referred to as a “hiker’s paradise”. Although still used today, many of these canals are also widely used for walking. No matter your preference or experience level, there are many different types of trails all over Madeira. Beginners or those looking for a more leisurely nature walk should stick to the south side of the island, while those looking for a more exhilarating trekking experience should head north to the mountainous side of the island.

This tour takes place in what is considered the "capital" of São Miguel Island – the city of Ponta Delgada. During this tour, we will discover the main historical, cultural, and noteworthy sites of this wonderful city.

Highlights of this tour include:

  • Old churches and convents
  • Monument of Portas da Cidade
  • Pineapple plantations  (* if not possible during the City Tour, this visit will take place during the Full-Day Tour of Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo)
  • Historical Beautiful gardens
  • São Brás Fortress and São Francisco square

9AM - 5PM: Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo Tour

A full-day tour that takes you to the two most famous lagoons of São Miguel Island.

Sete Cidades: One of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, this show-stopping, lake-filled crater has become one of the signature and most famous images of the Azores. There are (amazingly) 11 lakes in total scattered around Sete Cidades, but they can only be seen from certain angles from the various miradouros (viewpoints in Portuguese) in the area.

Lagoa do Fogo: Lagoa do Fogo, which translates roughly into "Lagoon of Fire", is a crater lake located at the center of São Miguel Island. This protected nature reserve sits tucked away atop the impressive Pico da Barrosa, far above the whir, hum, and hurry of civilization below.

  • Pineapple plantations (* if already visited during the City Tour, it will be substituted for a different point of interest)
  • Escalvado viewpoint (offering a magical view to Mosteiros)
  • Sete Cidades parish
  • Santiago lagoon
  • Vista do Rei viewpoint (overlooking the most famous lagoons of Sete Cidades)
  • Pico do Carvão
  • Lunch at a local restaurant
  • Local ceramics factory (Cerâmica Vieira)
  • Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint
  • Ribeira Grande city center, with a visit to the local liquor shop

9AM - 5PM: Furnas Tour

Furnas Valley is famous worldwide for its bubbling caldeiras and hot springs, where visitors can relax while soaking in a thermal bath any time of year, but this mystical volcanic valley is full of many more interesting surprises.

Highlights of this tour include:

  • Vila Franca do Campo (offering a viewpoint to the iconic islet)
  • Furnas Lake (here, learn how the famous "cozido" dish is cooked underground by heat from the actual volcanic vents!)
  • Furnas parish (you will have free time to bathe in the thermal waters here, or visit the Terra Nostra Garden)
  • Cozido lunch
  • Visit Furnas "calderas" to see the volcanic activity
  • Pico do Ferro viewpoint
  • Tea Factory
  • Santa Iria Viewpoint

Please note : Terra Nostra Park and/or Dona Beija entrance fees (8€-10€ each) are not included. Also, it is advised that you bring dark-colored bathing suits, an old towel, and a change of clothes (bathing in the thermal waters is known to stain fabrics). And blondes who dye their hair are cautioned to close pay attention as well, as the waters here contain iron and can stain hair the lighter hair pigments.

08:30AM - 12:30PM: Whale & Dolphin Watching Excursion

Take the opportunity to observe some of the dozens of cetacean species that are usually seen in the Azores. While nature is indeed wild, and offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during our half-day tours. During this tour, you will have the opportunity to observe turtles, birds, and other marine species. Before you embark on the boat trip, expert biologists hold a small informative talk to explain which cetacean species can be observed, the safety measures and protocols for behavior on board – including how we respect animals and what the rules for observation at sea are. You will even learn some fascinating historical facts.

  • Azorean Gin Masterclass: the Azores may be a tiny archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, but that hasn't stopped it from producing several excellent gins. Botanicals and ingredients grown on the islands are also used in several gins made in mainland Portugal. Baleia , which means “Whale” in English, is one of the gins you will try and is created by your host and gin curator here at the Solar Branco Eco Estate, Ali Bullock.
  • Visit Nordeste

Highlights:

  • Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint
  • Ponta da Madrugada Viewpoint
  • Arnel Lighthouse
  • Poço Azul Hiking Trail
  • Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park

We're thrilled that you had an incredible time exploring the islands with us. Have a safe flight home until we meet again!
