Cancel for Any Reason

Available as an add-on to Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance , Cancel for Any Reason optional coverage is ideal for travellers who need flexibility. When purchased within 5 days of booking the trip and making the initial payment (or before any cancellation penalties from the travel supplier apply), you can:

  • Cancel for any reason (not already listed as a covered risk in the policy)
  • Be reimbursed up to 50% of the pre-paid, unused non-refundable travel costs—as long as you cancel 5+ days before the departure date

Why add Cancel for Any Reason?

Michael booked a Mexican beach vacation, but the 14-day weather forecast called for rain for more than half his trip. He cancelled 7 days before he was scheduled to leave, so he was reimbursed for 50% of his pre-paid unused non-refundable travel costs.

What Does Trip Cancellation Insurance Cover?

What’s not covered by trip cancellation insurance, how much does trip cancellation insurance cost, is trip cancellation insurance worth it, how do i get travel cancellation insurance, trip cancellation travel insurance faq.

If you enjoy vacationing outside of Canada, you’ve probably considered purchasing a travel medical insurance policy in case you get sick or injured on a trip. But what if you have to cancel your plans before you even leave for the airport?

Trip cancellation insurance can help reimburse you in the event you have to cancel your trip, but it won’t cover every possible problem. Before you purchase a policy it’s important to understand what it does and doesn’t cover.

If you’re unable to take a trip due to an unforeseeable event, a trip cancellation policy will reimburse you for your prepaid, forfeited, non-transferable and non-refundable costs. Depending on the plan, your policy will help cover costs up to the time and date of your departure.

Trip cancellation insurance can be sold as a standalone policy (often as part of a trip cancellation and trip interruption plan) or as part of a comprehensive policy that also includes medical coverage. Some trip cancellation policies allow you to purchase Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage as an add-on.

While rules and coverage limits vary by policy type and insurer, here are some examples of problems commonly covered by trip cancellation insurance:

  • Any serious injury or unforeseen medical condition that makes you or your travel companion unfit for travel.
  • The death of you or your travelling companion, or the death of a non-travelling family member.
  • Strikes or severe weather that result in travel services being unable to operate.
  • Unforeseen natural disasters at home or at the destination that make them uninhabitable.
  • Loss of your job without just cause.
  • A legal obligation such as jury duty, or a professional summon in the case of active military or essential medical personnel.

Trip cancellation insurance policies usually include a trip delay or trip interruption benefit. With a trip delay benefit, the policy can pay for short-term unexpected delays to your travel, which can include meals, accommodations and transportation costs. A trip interruption benefit may help cover costs in the event your trip is cut short due to a problem covered by the policy.

Your trip cancellation coverage ends once your trip begins, so if something goes wrong after you leave home, that’s when trip interruption insurance or trip delay insurance kick in.

Since policies can vary drastically, it’s wise to carefully review the reasons covered by the policy to avoid surprises later. You’ll also want to understand the definition of terms in the policy. For example, “immediate family member” and “family member” may mean two completely different things under the policy’s guidelines.

While every traveller may have a unique circumstance for cancelling a trip, not every problem is covered. Generally, trip cancellation insurance doesn’t cover problems that arise from foreseeable events. A foreseeable event is a situation that may have been known or was expected before it happened.

For example, let’s say you purchase trip cancellation insurance for a family vacation to Cabo San Lucas when a hurricane is in the way. With most travel insurance policies, trip cancellation may not be covered.

Foreseeable events are not the only events excluded from trip cancellation insurance. Here are a few other examples of some problems typically not covered:

  • Intentional self-inflicted harm, suicide or attempted suicide.
  • Normal pregnancy, fertility treatments, childbirth or elective abortion.
  • Alcohol or substance abuse or use.
  • Mental or nervous health disorders such as depression, anxiety or psychosis.
  • War (declared or undeclared), acts of war and military duty.

If you purchase a basic travel insurance policy that includes trip cancellation coverage, you can expect to pay between 4% and 10% of your trip costs. For instance, if you buy a $10,000, nine-day trip through the Greek Isles, you can expect to pay between $500 and $1,000.

Keep in mind, selecting a policy with Cancel For Any Reason coverage can cost significantly more.

There are several other factors that can influence the cost of a policy:

  • Age of travellers:  Typically, the older you are the higher the policy cost will be. Older travelers are seen as riskier because they often have more health problems and are more likely to make a claim.
  • Trip expenses:  A policy’s price is based on your nonrefundable of prepaid travel expenses. Therefore, it’s important to calculate all of the costs you’ll incur before your departure when searching for a policy. This can include airfare, hotel and excursion deposits.
  • Plan selection:  Basic policies with fewer coverage options will cost less. For example, basic plans tend to have lower medical emergency and trip cancellation limits. That said, it’s important to select only benefits you need so you’re not paying for coverage options you won’t use.
  • The number of travellers:  The more people you insure the higher your premium will be.
  • Trip length:  The length of the trip will make a difference in the cost of a policy.

If you’ve paid a lot of money toward nonrefundable trip expenses, it’s worth taking a look at trip cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation insurance is designed for travellers who are concerned about safeguarding the money spent on a trip based on unforseen events.

Keep in mind, trip cancellation insurance only pays for problems listed in the policy. It  won’t cover changing your mind or foreseeable events.

Even if you’re on a tight budget, buying trip cancellation insurance can give you some peace of mind for unexpected events leading up to your departure. However, if you have to choose between cancellation insurance and emergency medical insurance, one thing to consider is that unforeseen medical expenses can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars, while cancellation insurance covers known expenditures.

When shopping for a trip cancellation policy, it’s smart to get quotes from multiple travel insurance companies. This way you can select a plan that is cost-effective yet provides the most value.

If you do purchase trip cancellation insurance and change your mind shortly after, you may be able to get your money back. Many travel insurance companies offer a “free look” period, meaning you can cancel the policy within a certain time frame and get a full refund. The time frame will depend on the travel insurance company, but 10 days is fairly standard.

Should I use my credit card's travel insurance instead?

It depends. The main deciding factor in whether you use your credit card’s travel insurance or buy a standalone policy comes down the coverage: Does your credit card offer the level of coverage you need? Your travel credit card may only cover you for a limited number of days, or provide a lower level of coverage than you want. Be sure to read the fine print.

How do I make a trip cancellation claim?

Each insurer has its own criteria for what is covered under its travel cancellation coverage, so to receive reimbursement you must be cancelling under a covered reason. For example, if your partner becomes too ill to travel, as advised by a medical professional, your claim should be approved. However, if your partner gets a cold, that’s likely not a covered reason. You also need to notify your travel suppliers within a certain period of time after discovering you’ll need to cancel your trip. If you get called for jury duty, for example, Allianz Travel Insurance requires you to cancel within 72 hours of being summoned. For RBC Insurance, the requirement is the next business day. Finally, you’ll need to collect all your documentation, namely proof of the covered reason for cancelling and the prepaid costs that you want reimbursement for, before submitting your claim.

Is trip cancellation insurance worth it?

Like any insurance purchase, whether or not trip cancellation insurance is worth it is up to you. If you’ve been saving for years for a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list trip, trip cancellation insurance may be a small investment in case sometime goes wrong and you have to cancel. Along with medical insurance, trip cancellation insurance offers comprehensive coverage in the event disaster strikes. However, if trip is short and close to home, or your credit card has travel insurance coverage, you might decide you don’t need the coverage.

6 truths and myths about 'cancel for any reason' travel insurance

Bill Fink

In the uncertainty of the pandemic-era travel world, purchasing travel insurance is becoming an essential part of any trip. In the past two years, people have purchased travel insurance policies in record numbers. Travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth reported insuring 300% more travelers in 2021 than 2020, and 70% more than in 2019. With ever-changing travel rules and regulations, frequently delayed or canceled flights and cruises, border closures and the omnipresent risk of COVID-19, travel insurance should continue to be a consideration.

Given the amount of pandemic-related exceptions and exclusions in regular travel insurance policies, more travelers have been considering "cancel for any reason" travel insurance. CFAR policies allow travelers to get reimbursed in the event they choose to cancel their trip out of caution, fear or other personal reasons unrelated to illness or accident. The Seven Corners travel insurance company told TPG it had seen a 180% increase in CFAR product sales from 2019 to 2020 as the pandemic brought chaos into the travel world.

But is CFAR travel insurance right for you? How affordable and reliable are such policies? TPG spoke with industry experts about the truths and myths of CFAR travel insurance.

Want more travel tips and advice from TPG? Sign up for our daily newsletter .

You can really cancel for any reason, at any time

cancel for any reason travel insurance canada

Myth : This is insurance — of course there are exceptions. While CFAR travel insurance is much more comprehensive than regular travel insurance, every policy has particular rules (and some exclusions) around reimbursement for cancellation. As with all insurance policies, it's critical to review the details and read the policy fine print prior to purchase.

According to Angela Borden, product marketing strategist at Seven Corners, the company's CFAR policies do not refund trip expenses if a tour operator cancels a trip because the policyholders should be able to get their refunds from the operator. Also, most CFAR policies have specific required timing for purchase and cancellation, or the policy is invalid. Insurance companies typically require you to purchase the policy within a couple of weeks of booking the trip.

Also, a policy may only issue trip coverage if you cancel at least a certain number of days before a trip is set to begin (in Seven Corners' case, two days in advance). Every company's policy is going to be different, and many companies have several products within the CFAR category. Do your research in advance to be sure you get the coverage you're looking for. "CFAR policies have terms, conditions and exclusions just like any other insurance product," says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at the Allianz Partners insurance company.

CFAR is outrageously expensive

It depends : The value of CFAR depends on the style of your trip, your budget and your cost-benefit perspective. CFAR policies typically cost about 40-50% more than other standard travel insurance policies. A sample pricing search on the Travelers Insurance website generated a quote for $575 to cover a $10,000 trip value, while adding CFAR to the policy upped the rate to $828. (Note: Prices and coverage vary widely by firm and coverage.)

A survey of TPG readers revealed that many people don't mind the surcharge, as it provides peace of mind. Some travelers' personal situations may make it more likely they'll cancel a trip for a reason not covered under a typical policy, so the anticipated benefit matches the cost. However, several TPG readers consider CFAR policies "a big waste of money" and "way too expensive." Readers have reported satisfaction with the pricing and coverage of more traditional travel insurance policies that now include expanded health coverage.

Anyone can buy CFAR insurance

Myth : While CFAR is widely available, it has historically been prohibited to residents of New York. The state's Department of Financial Services had declared that "CFAR benefits in the travel context do not technically qualify as insurance because the cancellation of a trip 'for any reason' does not depend on the occurrence of fortuitous event." However, in March 2020, the department issued an Insurance Circular Letter to revise the rule, stating that CFAR benefits can be sold by an insurer in New York if "necessary or incidental to its travel insurance business." The revision also mentions that non-insurers can sell CFAR benefits "if they are not sold as an insurance product."

At the time of the ruling, six insurance firms announced plans to issue CFAR policies in New York. However, Seven Corners and many other firms still do not offer CFAR policies in New York, and for those who might offer the product, their CFAR policy rules and structures may be different than those offered in other states. It is recommended to speak directly with an insurance agent if you're looking to buy CFAR insurance as a resident of New York.

Only CFAR covers COVID-19-related cancellations

cancel for any reason travel insurance canada

Myth : Many new travel insurance products have been created specifically with COVID-19 in mind, and many older policies have been modified to include COVID-19 coverage. "We've found that the epidemic enhancements we've made have met most travelers' needs," Durazo said in regard to his company Allianz Partners. "Our standard products now cover cancellations and interruptions due to serious pandemic illnesses, as well as medical emergencies, denied boarding due to suspected illness and mandatory personal quarantines."

TPG readers have reported that they've found medical-only travel insurance to be "a cheap and wise option." Borden, from Seven Corners, added that although a medical policy includes coverage for travelers who contract COVID-19 and consequently cancel their trips, "it will not cover your cancellation of a trip due to your fear of catching COVID-19." Such a cancellation reason would require a CFAR policy.

CFAR insurance covers your trip expenses in full

cancel for any reason travel insurance canada

Myth : CFAR policies typically cover 75% of the specifically insured trip cost, with some policies refunding just 50% of the initial travel booking. "CFAR policies only cover a portion of prepaid expenses, so consumers have considerable 'skin in the game' if they have to file a claim," Allianz's Durazo said. "Consumers should weigh the costs and benefits of purchasing a CFAR policy versus a standard travel insurance policy that may meet their needs for a lower cost." Still, many TPG readers reported feeling satisfied after receiving a bulk of their trip refunded thanks to CFAR policies.

'My dog is sick' is covered under CFAR

cancel for any reason travel insurance canada

Truth: TPG reader Sally McCormack had to cancel a trip because her dog had a serious illness. She contacted her CFAR insurance company and it did indeed refund 75% of her trip cost. Borden, from Seven Corners, confirmed this would be an acceptable reason for someone to cancel a trip under her company's CFAR policies, and those customers would be entitled to the specific product's stated refund payout. Multiple TPG readers also said they had "no issues" getting refunds when using their CFAR policies, and most were thankful they didn't lose too much money after canceling trips due to personal reasons that would not have been covered under a typical travel insurance policy.

Bottom line

CFAR travel insurance can provide peace of mind and financial coverage for travelers planning trips during these uncertain times. While CFAR does add costs (and does have certain exclusions, terms and conditions like any other insurance plan), many customers have been happy with the product. However, more travel insurance companies now offer affordable medical travel insurance products with pandemic-specific coverage, so many people have been selecting that option as a more cost-efficient alternative. Individual travelers should carefully review their anticipated risks and costs and always, always read the fine print on any insurance product.

Air Canada and Hopper Partner to Offer Cancel for Any Reason

Air Canada and Montreal-based Hopper have partnered to offer passengers the option to add Cancel for Any Reason protection on flights. By paying for this service, passengers can receive up to a 100% refund of a non-refundable fare, if canceled up to 24 hours before the flight’s scheduled departure.

While this option has appeared on the Canadian version of the Air Canada website since earlier this year, today’s announcement makes the partnership official.

Air Canada and Hopper have officially announced a partnership, through which passengers can add Cancel for Any Reason protection to a non-refundable flight booking for a fee.

For Air Canada flights, Cancel for Any Reason is only available on the Canadian version of the website or app, and only on a certain subset of non-refundable fares, including:

  • Economy (Standard)
  • Economy (Flex)
  • Premium Economy (Lowest)
  • Business Class (Lowest)

Cancel for Any Reason is not available on Economy (Basic) fares, nor is it applicable to Aeroplan bookings.

Refundable fares, including Economy (Comfort), Economy (Latitude), Premium Economy (Flexible), and Business Class (Flexible) are also excluded, since they’re already refundable.

cancel for any reason travel insurance canada

During the process of booking an Air Canada flight, the option to add Cancel for Any Reason protection appears after selecting a fare. There’s a cheaper option, which will give you 80% of your fare back, or a more expensive option, which will refund the entire cost of your flight.

If you opt for Cancel for Any Reason protection, you must purchase it for all passengers on the same booking. It may only be added at the time of booking, and may not be added after the fact.

The Cancel for Any Reason fee is non-refundable, except if you cancel the flight within 24 hours of booking. If Air Canada cancels any flights on your itinerary, the fee is still non-refundable, as per the terms and conditions .

By choosing to exercise Cancel for Any Reason on any flight in a booking, all flights on the booking will be cancelled.

Should you wish to make a voluntary change to your booking that changes the departure date, Cancel for Any Reason protection will still apply; however, it will expire either at the original cancellation deadline (24 hours prior to the scheduled departure time of your original flight), or 24 hours prior to the newly scheduled departure time for the first flight on your itinerary, whichever comes first.

In other words, if you change your flight to a later date, you’ll still need to cancel prior to 24 hours before the original flight’s departure time, otherwise you’ll lose the protection.

Furthermore, you’re only covered for the original amount of your ticket, and not for any additional charges you may have incurred.

Cancel for Any Reason is not insurance coverage. Rather, it’s an opt-in service that allows you to choose to cancel your booking for any reason up to 24 hours prior to departure, and receive up to a 100% refund.

How Does Cancel for Any Reason Work?

During the process of making a booking with Air Canada, you may see an option to add Cancel for Any Reason coverage after you’ve selected a fare from the search results. It’s worth noting that Cancel for Any Reason may not be available on all flights.

You can choose to have either 80% or 100% of the flight cost covered, with the latter costing a bit more. You can also choose to not add this optional protection to your booking.

If you choose Cancel for Any Reason, the cost is then added to your booking, and displayed further down the page.

It’s worth noting that neither Air Canada nor Hopper process the refund for Cancel for Any Reason bookings. Rather, it’s done separately through PayPal’s Hyperwallet payment services.

Therefore, you’ll need to adhere to all of Hyperwallet’s requirements to receive your refund.

Is Cancel for Any Reason a Good Deal?

Whenever you’re shopping for fares, it’s important to consider what kind of flexibility you need if your travel plans change.

One option is to pay for a refundable fare to begin with, which is more expensive than non-refundable fares.

For example, a flight from Vancouver to Montreal has the following breakdown of fares:

  • Economy (Standard): $424 (CAD)
  • Economy (Flex): $503 (CAD)
  • Economy (Comfort): $592 (CAD)

Adding Cancel for Any Reason protection to either the Economy (Standard) or Economy (Flex) fare would incur the following costs:

  • Economy (Standard): $51 (CAD) for an 80% refund
  • Economy (Standard): $72 (CAD) for a 100% refund
  • Economy (Flex): $60 (CAD) for an 80% refund
  • Economy (Flex):  $86 (CAD) for a 100% refund

In the above example, you’d wind up coming out ahead using Cancel for Any Reason on the Economy (Standard) booking, versus paying for a refundable Economy (Comfort) fare to begin with.

However, it’s worth paying extra for the Economy (Comfort) fare if you’d purchase an Economy (Flex) fare, since the price difference between the upgrade to Economy (Comfort) and Cancel for Any Reason protection is negligible.

You’ll also want to consider the different inclusions that come with each fare level, including seat selection fees, change fees, and the accumulation of Aeroplan points and Status Qualifying Miles.

In other words, you’ll need to weigh out the price difference between paying for a refundable fare and Cancel for Any Reason protection, since there are so many factors to consider.

However, if your plans might change but you don’t want to splurge on a refundable fare, it’s good to have Cancel for Any Reason as an option.

Air Canada and Hopper have officially announced a partnership to offer Cancel for Any Reason protection for Air Canada bookings. By opting for this paid add-on service, passengers can receive up to a 100% refund if they need to cancel their flight for any reason up to 24 hours prior to departure.

Cancel for Any Reason appears as an option during the booking process on the Canadian version of the Air Canada website and app, and can’t be added once a booking is already complete.

You should also compare the price difference for refundable Air Canada fares to begin with, since higher fares also come with additional features that may be important and valuable to you.

one thing that wasn’t clear was that the Cancel for No Reason was also refundable within the 24 hour Air Canada window. I called Air Canada to ask if it was refundable; the agent didn’t really know but said it was not. When I looked at the fine print and read over the document that Hopper sent, it did seem that the insurance would be refunded. So, the short story is that this insurance is refundable within the 24 window for cancellation. Also, cancelling was fast, the money from Hopper was refunded within 24 hours.

I booked a recent fare business calls fully refundable and did not notice at time of booking the additional onetime cancel for any reason. I cancelled my trip with in 24 hours and received the full refund for my ticket but want to confirm since I did this within the 24 hours will the $415 fee also be refunded since I no longer have a ticket

Frequently Asked Questions

Cancel for any reason insurance (also called CFAR coverage) is a type of trip cancellation insurance that lets you cancel your trip for a reason not listed as a covered reason in your plan. For example, you may decide not to travel due to an illness in your extended family or a specific financial issue you're dealing with. In either case, this time-sensitive coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid trip payments you have made toward airfare, hotel stays, tours and more.

CFAR coverage typically needs to be purchased within a sensitive period of time after making a trip deposit (usually ranging from 14 to 20 days after). Travelers only get back between 50% and 80% of prepaid travel expenses, depending on your policy, so this coverage won't lead to a full refund.

If you're worried how COVID-19 might affect your travel plans, you can purchase travel insurance that includes COVID-19 coverage . That said, CFAR protection can also be a good investment, particularly if you want the option to cancel based on last-minute disinclination to travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Compare the best “cancel for any reason” travel insurance plans

Methodology

Our insurance experts analyzed cost and coverage data to determine the best travel insurance plans with “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage. For this rating, we only scored travel insurance plans that offer a CFAR upgrade.

The benefits we scored out of a possible 100 points include:

Cost: 80 points. We scored the average cost of each CFAR travel insurance policy for a variety of international trips and traveler profiles.

CFAR reimbursement level of trip cost: 20 points. Policies providing 75% reimbursement were awarded 20 points. Travel insurance plans offering CFAR coverage of 50% got 10 points.

What is "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) insurance?

“Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage picks up where basic trip cancellation benefits included with travel insurance leave off.

It typically reimburses you for up to 75% of your nonrefundable travel costs when you decide to cancel your trip for a reason not listed in your policy.

“While travel insurance will cover a wide array of travel situations, it won’t cover everything,” said Stan Sandberg, cofounder of TravelInsurance.com.

“For trip cancellation coverage, travel insurance plans will only cover you for very specific covered reasons listed in a plan’s description of coverage. If an event is not listed as a covered reason, it won’t be covered unless the consumer opts for a ‘cancel for any reason’ policy,” Sandberg added.

How does "cancel for any reason" coverage work?

“‘Cancel for any reason’ is typically sold as an upgrade to a regular travel insurance plan,” Sandberg said.

Depending on the insurance company, you’ll typically need to buy CFAR travel insurance within one to three weeks of making your first trip payment. You’re also usually required to insure the full value of your nonrefundable trip expenses.

How much does CFAR coverage typically cost?

Travel insurance with “cancel for any reason” coverage costs an average of $745 per trip, according to our analysis of travel insurance costs for plans with a CFAR upgrade. Our top-scoring CFAR travel insurance plans all have below-average rates.

CFAR coverage can increase the cost of your base travel insurance plan anywhere from 40% to 100%, depending on the company and the policy.

Average cost for travel insurance policies with CFAR

Average cost is based on travel insurance quotes for seven international trips taken by travelers of various ages. Plans have different levels of benefits, which can account for price differences.

Do you need “cancel for any reason” insurance?

If you want the flexibility to be able to cancel your trip for a reason the travel insurance plan doesn’t cover, you may want to spend the extra money to add CFAR coverage to your policy.

What to know about CFAR insurance

With “cancel for any reason” travel insurance, you typically need to cancel your trip at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure time.

“To take advantage of the CFAR benefit, travelers must cancel their trip in its entirety two to three days before their departure to receive reimbursement,” said James Clark, a spokesperson for Squaremouth, the company behind Tin Leg travel insurance.

In other words, if you get nervous about your trip and want to cancel the morning your plane departs, it’s too late to use your CFAR coverage.

What is “interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage?

Similar to CFAR travel insurance, an IFAR upgrade can reimburse up to 75% of your nonrefundable trip costs if you change your itinerary after departing for a reason your base policy doesn’t cover.

Also similar to CFAR coverage, IFAR coverage is optional and costs extra. Not all travel insurance companies offer it.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

If you get sick with COVID-19 before or during your trip, many travel insurance plans will cover losses due to your illness, such as having to cancel or reschedule your trip, provided you are diagnosed by a doctor or a third-party testing service.

However, even with a comprehensive travel insurance policy, the base plan will not cover things like deciding you don’t want to travel because you’re worried about catching COVID. Purchasing optional CFAR coverage would allow you to cancel your trip for these reasons.

More: Best COVID travel insurance

You’re unlikely to get “cancel for any reason” coverage through your credit card. If you charge a covered trip to your credit card , you may get some travel insurance benefits.

For example, some credit cards provide trip cancellation and interruption coverage, baggage delay insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, travel, and emergency assistance services, and trip delay reimbursement.

More : Best travel rewards credit cards

No, CFAR travel insurance will not give you a full refund if you cancel your trip. Most policies that offer an optional CFAR upgrade will refund 50% or 75% of your covered trip expenses, as long as you cancel within the required timeframe. You typically need to cancel at least 48 hours before you are scheduled to travel in order to file a CFAR claim.

We are looking for an insurance company available to Canadians that offers "Cancel for any Reason" trip insurance. Is there such a thing? We have found ones for Americans but not Canadians.

Thanks in Advance

Janet & Tony

I know BCAA and Blue Cross offer emergenct medical travel insurance, you'd have to check on "for any reason." My understanding is it woukd be very expensive. BCAA had no "anytime in your life wording" which made their policy look very attractive, but they have now added that clause in for certain conditions.

As always you have to read the fine print. I found out recently that "trip cancellation and interruption" insurance does NOT cover you if you wind up having your trip interrupted by airline cancellations due to weather woes... for that, you need something called " Flight Delay" insurance. In April, leaving Las Vegas to come home, we had an evening flight cancelled on us when the incoming airplane was struck by lightning and had to undergo maintenance and inspection before it could fly again. Our flight was rescheduled for morning. The airline was not responsible for any assistance, because it wass considered a weather delay. We incurred several hundred dollars in expenses - a last minute hotel room in Vegas (on a busy Saturday night), a non-cancellable and refundable hotel booked through hotwire in Edmonton , meals etc. - that totalled half the cost of the six-day vacation package we had originally booked (!!) and when I called our insurer (via our credit card) to find out what was covered and how to make a claim, I discovered we didn't have that particular coverage. Guess it was worth what we paid for it, LOL.

I would recommend contacting your local insurance broker. If such a thing is available, I'm sure they will sell it. (Our local broker sells auto, life, emergency medical, and other types of travel insurance policies.) But IF it is available, I bet it will be very, very expensive.

I'm sure the OP knows the difference! It is I who misread the question. And I too think that it will be very expensive. Not easy to find.

Sunwing and Signature Vacations offer a 3 hour cancellation insurance. The insurance will not give you all cash back, it will give you a portion in cash and a portion in credit for a future trip booking within 1 year of the trip. You can cancel for any reason, it costs about 50 bucks a week (I think). It's a good product that I have unfortunately made use of several times.

Best Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance of 2024

See which insurers are the best for affordability, coverage, and more

If you’re a frequent traveler, having travel insurance can be valuable. But if you need to cancel a trip, your policy will only refund your prepaid expenses due to certain circumstances. Adding cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance to your policy covers many cancellation causes that normally are not covered, like last-minute work obligations or safety concerns.

To help you choose the best cancel for any reason travel insurance, we evaluated 18 companies based on 28 criteria. Some of the factors we looked at include the maximum CFAR reimbursement rates (20% of the score), premiums (17.5%), number of policy types available (7.5%), and trip cancellation coverage amounts (5%).

All premiums mentioned are based on a $3,500, 10-day trip from Florida to Costa Rica for two same-aged travelers. We gathered quotes for four different ages: 28, 40, 55, and 70.

Best Overall: USI Affinity

If you want a cancel for any reason travel insurance policy with the best features and the most coverage, Tin Leg is a great choice because it offers the lowest premiums for its upgraded plans.

Lowest premium for upgraded plans

Up to $500,000 in medical coverage

Doesn’t offer multi-trip coverage

No annual plans

Out of the best CFAR companies on our list, Tin Leg has the lowest premiums for its upgraded CFAR plans. The highest plan premium from Tin Leg is just under $200.

Another thing we like about Tin Leg is that it has the highest amount of coverage for medical expenses. The maximum amount of medical coverage is $500,000 per person, per trip. There were only six insurers we reviewed that offered that much coverage.

Despite the benefits of Tin Leg, this CFAR insurance provider also has some downsides. The plans don’t include pet medical coverage, and kids aren’t covered for free.

Berkshire Hathaway offered a slightly lower premium than Tin Leg for its top-tier plan. However, the company’s overall score was below average and higher than just five of the other 17 companies. Therefore, we kept the insurer out of our rankings.

  • Lowest CFAR premium: $145.55
  • Highest CFAR premium: $199.50

Best for Trip Interruption Reimbursement: HTH

HTH’s cancel for any reason travel insurance plan reimburses up to 200% of your trip interruption costs, which is the highest reimbursement limit out of the “best” companies we reviewed.

Highest trip interruption reimbursement limit

Plan includes pet medical coverage

Provides up to $500,000 in medical coverage

Only one CFAR plan available

Only reimburses $50,000 for covered cancellations

No multi-trip coverage

HTH only offers one CFAR plan, but it provides excellent coverage, including 200% reimbursement for your trip interruption costs (covered interruptions include 14 scenarios, including sickness and natural disasters). Additionally, the plan includes $500,000 in medical coverage per person, per trip, as well as pet medical expenses coverage. HTH’s CFAR plan provides a maximum reimbursement of 75% for prepaid travel expenses, which is the typical rate.

Thirteen of the 18 companies we analyzed offered a 75% CFAR reimbursement rate.

HTH will only reimburse a maximum of $50,000 in trip cancellation costs for covered events, which is the lowest coverage limit out of the best companies on our list. In addition, it doesn’t offer annual plans, and the one CFAR travel insurance plan available doesn’t cover multiple trips. Additionally, the premium for HTH’s CFAR plan was  $301.82, which was around $31 more than the average for top-tier plans and nearly $80 more than the average for low-tier plans.

  • Lowest CFAR premium : $301.82
  • Highest CFAR premium : $301.82

Best for Travel Delay Coverage: Trawick International

Trawick International’s cancel for any reason travel insurance plans provide $3,000 in travel delay coverage, which is the highest amount of delay coverage out of the companies on this list.

Highest amount of travel delay coverage

Five CFAR plan options

Affordable premiums

Plans don’t include pet medical coverage

No free coverage for kids

Free-look period is only 10 days

Trawick International offers the most travel delay coverage out of the 18 CFAR travel insurance companies we evaluated. Plans include a maximum of $3,000 in travel delay coverage in case you need to get a hotel or rent a car due to unexpected travel delays.

Trawick International has five CFAR plans, and the premiums are pretty affordable. The lowest plan premium is $143.14, which is one of the cheapest premiums out of the companies we reviewed. You can also get annual plans and plans with multi-trip coverage.

Keep in mind that Trawick’s free look period is only 10 days, which is shorter than the typical 15-day period other insurers offer.

  • Lowest CFAR premium: $143.14
  • Highest CFAR premium: $302.94

The Bottom Line

Cancel for any reason travel insurance can be worth the added cost, especially if you travel often or take expensive trips. However, the best CFAR travel insurance company is different for everyone. For instance, if you want the cheapest plan, USI Affinity is a great choice. But if you’re looking for a plan with a high CFAR reimbursement rate, Allianz is the top choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Difference Between Trip Cancellation and Cancel for Any Reason?

Trip cancellation is a standard part of travel insurance that covers the cost of non-refundable travel if you have to cancel a trip for a specific reason, including illness, injury, or death. Cancel for any reason insurance is something you add to a policy to cover cancellations that don’t qualify for trip cancellation. For example, if you have to cancel a trip at the last second because your fear of flying overwhelms you a couple of days before your flight,  CFAR allows you to cancel, no questions asked. Another key difference is that trip cancellation insurance typically offers a maximum dollar amount your policy pays out, whereas CFAR reimbursements you a percentage of your non-refundable trip costs.

What Is Cancel for Any Reason Coverage?

Cancel for any reason coverage is a type of insurance coverage you can add to a travel insurance policy that will cover you for cancellation reasons that aren’t covered by your travel insurance. CFAR insurance reimburses you a percentage of your non-refundable travel costs, often 50% to 75%.

How Much Does Cancellation Insurance Cost?

Cancel for any reason insurance can cost you anywhere from 10% to 40% of your travel insurance premium. For example, during our research, we found adding CFAR to a Travel Guard policy that cost $169.29 would add an extra $38.08.

Can You Buy Cancel for Any Reason Insurance After 21 Days?

In most cases, travel insurance companies will require you to buy your CFAR insurance within 14 to 21 days of your first payment for the trip.

Methodology

Narrowing down the best cancel for any reason travel insurance companies means analyzing aspects of travel insurance that are most important to travelers.

With that in mind, we examined 18 top travel insurance companies across the following 16 categories:

  • CFAR reimbursement rate (20% of score) : Companies with higher reimbursement rates for CFAR coverage received the highest scores.
  • Premiums (17%) ; We analyzed the highest and lowest premiums offered by a company, weighting the two premiums equally.
  • Policy types available (7.5%) : Having a choice of plans to pick from can ensure you aren’t paying for coverage you don’t need. Companies with more options scored higher.
  • Free look period length (5%) : A free-look period is an invaluable part of buying insurance. Companies with longer free-look periods received higher scores.
  • Pre-existing condition coverage (5%) : Companies that offered medical coverage for pre-existing conditions scored higher than those that didn’t.
  • Maximum coverage for emergency transportation (5%) : Evacuation out of a country for medical reasons can be costly, so we scored companies higher if they had higher emergency transportation limits.
  • Maximum baggage coverage (5%) : Companies that offer higher coverage limits for lost and damaged baggage score higher.
  • Maximum medical coverage (5%) : Medical coverage for injuries you sustain while traveling can offset potentially expensive hospital bills.
  • Adventure sports coverage (5%) : Provides coverage if you participate in adventure sports during your trip.
  • Sports and activity coverage (5%) : Because vacations typically include new activities or participation in sports, it can be helpful to have travel insurance that covers injuries you sustain during those activities.
  • Maximum travel delay coverage (5%) : Travel delay coverage can help you cover the cost of lodging and food if you’re stranded due to, for example, a canceled flight or train ride.
  • Maximum trip cancellation coverage (5%) : If you have to cancel a trip for covered reasons (CFAR insurance covers cancellations not otherwise covered by your insurance), a high coverage limit can help offset some or all of your non-refundable trip costs.
  • AM Best rating (2.5%) : A high AM Best rating means a company is very likely to pay out a claim in the near future, so companies with higher ratings scored higher.
  • Maximum trip interruption reimbursement rate (2.5%) : Companies that offered higher reimbursement amounts in the event of a trip interruption earned higher scores in this category.
  • Multi-trip coverage (2.5%) : Avid travelers can benefit from multi-trip coverage, and may be able to save money by booking one insurance package as opposed to a separate policy for each trip.
  • No extra charge for a child: (2.5%) : Companies that offered to include at least one child in their CFAR insurance policies received higher scores than those that didn’t.

How to Find the Best Travel Insurance

Elina Geller

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Table of Contents

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.
