"There's just not enough time during an hour of Wait Wait to really get to know the panelists. They're some of the smartest and funniest people on the planet, and this is a chance to spend an evening laughing with them."

Last Laugh? Chris Rock Sells Out First Dates of Comedy Tour Following Oscar ‘Slapgate’

Ticket prices to see Chris Rock ‘s comedy tour are surging in the wake of Sunday’s “slapgate” incident at the Oscars. While Rock announced his spring tour dates months ago, ticket sites say they’ve seen an increase in sales since Rock was slapped by Will Smith while presenting the Best Documentary trophy at the Oscars telecast.

Team trump is ready to lose the supreme court immunity case. they’re celebrating, taylor swift and jack antonoff have reached their limit, kanye west announces 'yeezy porn' amid reports of adult film company.

The online ticket reseller TickPick , went viral Monday after tweeting that they sold more tickets to see Rock overnight than in the last month combined.

A representative for StubHub, meantime, says the site experienced “more than 25x the daily sales” over the past two days compared to what they’ve seen in the last month. Similar to TickPick, “Cumulative sales over the last two days are more than the total sales we have seen in the entirety of March,” the StubHub rep tells Rolling Stone .

“Now that we are 48 hours from Sunday evening, it’s evident that demand for Chris Rock shows has jumped dramatically, based on our ticket buying trends on StubHub,” says Mike Silveira, spokesperson for StubHub. “At this stage in his tour, on an average day, we’d expect to see a spike in sales in the 24 or 48 hours prior to a show date as last-minute sales roll in – but it is incredibly unusual to see the spike we have experienced.”

Buy Chris Rock Tickets on StubHub $102+

It isn’t just demand that’s increased: StubHub says the average price of tickets to see Rock’s comedy show has jumped from “hovering between $150-$200 a ticket to about $250 a ticket.” (As of this writing, we spotted Chris Rock tickets on StubHub starting from the $100 range ).

Rock is playing a string of shows in Boston before embarking on his “Ego Death World Tour.” The Boston residency kicks off tonight at the Wilbur Theatre and runs until April 2. The comedian then hits the road for the first date of his tour in Atlantic City, before criss-crossing the country over the summer. The tour wraps up November 17  in Los Angeles — fittingly at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood where the Oscars took place.

While Smith has apologized for his actions , calling his behavior “unacceptable and inexcusable,” Rock has yet to comment, and both fans and observers alike are no doubt hoping he’ll address the incident on stage during his stand-up set.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

As of this writing, tickets to Rock’s kickoff show in Boston Wednesday night are sold out on Ticketmaster , though there are still some seats left on sites like VividSeats.com . Resellers are asking for as much as $400 for the seats though — a hefty increase considering original pricing started at $49.50.

Bonus: Use Promo Code RS15 to Save $15 Off Purchase of $125 or More on VividSeats

Tickets to the next three nights are also sold out, with the 1000-seat Wilber Theatre at full capacity for both the 7:30pm shows and 10:00pm shows. Your best bet to find Chris Rock tickets is to check Vivid Seats or StubHub, which has seats available for the Boston dates as well as the official dates for his comedy tour.

Buy Chris Rock Tickets on Vivid Seats $400+

The 38-date North American leg of his “Ego Death World Tour” marks Rock’s first world tour in more than five years. Fans hoping to catch new material from Rock about the Oscars (or potentially hear a Will Smith joke) will have to take it all in live — the shows have a strict “no phones” policy, which means any viral moment that comes out of Rock’s stand-up set will likely come anecdotally from someone in the audience — or come from a leak.

Things To Do

Things to do | denver 2022 comedy guide: from amy schumer to john mulaney and chris rock, the best stand-up at red rocks, clubs and more, colorado comedy festivals such as high plains and the chief fest in trinidad are also coming back.

Denver’s 2022 comedy calendar is more crowded than ever, so here are some curated picks to help you sort through the biggest and best stand-up events of the year.

Most shows are 21-and-up; check individual websites for details. You also can view a running list of local shows at 5280comedy.com , and visit denverpost.com/calendar for more.

RELATED: Denver’s desperately needed 2022 comedy revival is here, and not a moment too soon

Denver comic Janae Burris does well in pretty much any venue, from hosting Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheatre to slinging jokes at a biker bar, which makes her April 16 taping at the Aurora Fox Arts Center such a treat. She’ll record her first-ever special, “Long Overdue,” before the comic, actor and TV host takes a break after having a baby (due later this month). Shows at 7 and 9 p.m. April 16. $30-$50 (the $50 ticket includes two drinks). aurorafoxartscenter.org

Tig Notaro lived in Denver for a time, but didn’t begin performing stand-up until she decamped to L.A. — where she quickly met Kristen Schaal (“Bob’s Burgers”), who happens to be from Longmont. Ah, the synergy. Now a force on streaming TV (Amazon’s “One Mississippi” and Paramount’s “Star Trek: Discovery”) and also a voice actor, Notaro remains a stellar stand-up who can flatten audiences with the most subtle of intonations and expressions. Her sets are a master class in deadpan humor. Notaro’s “Hello Again” show comes to the Paramount Theatre April 14. $39-$49 (with limited tickets as of press time). ticketmaster.com

Patton Oswalt , one of the funniest, most beloved and most influential comics of the last two decades, returns to the Paramount Theatre May 14 to catch us up on his life, which has been topsy-turvy in recent years while he’s dealt with the death of his wife, solo parenting, remarriage and a busy acting and writing schedule. He has, in my experience, never performed anything less than an excellent set. $45-$75. ticketmaster.com

If you haven’t heard of Chelcie Lynn , who gained online fame a few years back as Trailer Trash Tammy, get ready, because she’s coming for you. Lynn, who will perform at Comedy Works South at the Landmark April 13-16, is shooting a prank show, lining up more film cameos (see “Tangerine”), and consolidating her hundreds of millions of streaming views with merchandise and branding. $35-$85. comedyworks.com

stand up comedy tour 2022

Also worthy at Comedy Works : “The Office” co-star Craig Robinson (at Comedy Works South, April 7-9); Comedy Central roastmaster general Jeff Ross (April 8-10); Nick Swardson (April 14-16); John Novosad , a.k.a. Hippieman, who has a great new album (April 27); Henry Cho (south club, May 6-8); Doug Benson (May 8); Michelle Wolf (May 12-14); Adam Carolla (south club, June 24-25); Tammy Pescatelli (south club, Aug. 18-20); and stand-up queen Maria Bamford (south club, Nov. 20-22), among many others. Various times and prices. Visit comedyworks.com for the evolving calendar.

Comedy Works Presents , the club’s booking arm, has several big shows from touring comics that you can find on their websites — they’re just not at the Comedy Works clubs. That includes Chris Distefano (Paramount, April 9); Mark Normand (Paramount, May 7); trailblazing veteran  Rita Rudner (PACE Center, April 10); Anjelah Johnson (Paramount, April 15-16); Paula Poundstone (Paramount, April 29; see below for more on her); and Kathleen Madigan (Paramount, June 4). Time and ticketing details for all shows are also available at comedyworks.com .

The Denver Improv — which has been more of a complement to Comedy Works than competition since the national chain opened in Northfield in 2007 — has upcoming shows from Lynne Koplitz (April 8-9); Stone Cold & The Jackal (April 14); Eddie Ifft (April 15-16) Nick Shelton (April 21); Cowboy Bill Martin (April 22-23); Antoine Scott (April 29-30); and King Bach (June 17-18), among others. Various times and prices. Visit denver.improv.com for details.

John Mulaney returns to Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the first time since the Oddball Comedy Tour played there in 2014 — and for his first headlining gig in the intimidating venue. As he proved in 2014, the Emmy-winning, deadpan (and lately very-in-the-news) comic and former “Saturday Night Live” writer has a knack for commanding his audiences, and these “From Scratch” tour shows should be no different. Shows at 3 and 8 p.m. on April 17, $79-$350. axs.com

stand up comedy tour 2022

Stand-up, improv and public-radio veteran Paula Poundstone performs a different show every time she steps on stage, leaning heavily on the mood and ideas of the audience to craft her sets. It makes sense that they’re such a consistent pleasure when you consider her spot on NPR’s “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!,” her books, and her podcast “Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone” (haw!). April 29 at the Paramount Theatre , $37.50-$75. ticketmaster.com

Trinidad boosters have lately been hard-pushing the New Mexico border town as Colorado’s next arts enclave, with millions in investments from Denverites moving there to escape what they complain are high rents, traffic and pollution in the Mile High City. That’s potentially creating the biggest audience yet for the Chief Bicycle & Comedy Festival , which references both Trinidad’s historic rail line (the Southwest Chief) and its biking culture (also burgeoning). Creator Wally Wallace and his backers have booked dozens of comics to take over the town’s smaller venues — and expand to Raton, N.M., for the first time — with national and local acts Eddie Pepitone, Emma Arnold, the Grawlix (Denver’s Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrew Orvedahl and Ben Roy, of truTV’s “Those Who Can’t), Babs Gray, David Gborie, Gabby Gutierrez-Reed and more. May 5-6. $20-$160 for passes; $30 for individual shows.. thechieffestival.com

On the internationally known side: Hannah Gadsby , who cleaved the stand-up world in two with her invigorating one-woman-show/”stand-up” set “Nanette,” will bring her new “Body of Work” to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on June 2. Influential comic Chris Rock , who absorbed Will Smith’s Oscars slap like a champ, returns to Bellco Theatre June 21 to dissect relationships, race, politics and himself. And Tom Segura can lay claim to Colorado’s biggest stand-up show of the year (so far) with his appearance at Ball Arena on July 23. Various times and prices. Visit ticketmaster.com or axs.com  for more.

Amy Schumer , a lightning rod long before her Oscars co-hosting gig last week, returns to Denver for the first time in four years as part of her “Whore Tour.” Having recorded her 2017 Netflix debut “The Leather Special” at Denver’s Bellco Theatre , the Emmy-winning writer, author and actor should be right at home for her quartet of sets at the smaller but no-less-prestigious Paramount Theatre . Limited tickets available, Aug. 27-28. $99.50. ticktemaster.com

stand up comedy tour 2022

Denver’s High Plains Comedy Festival has over its eight years evolved into one of the country’s most notable stand-up and podcast events, with live tapings, showcases, reunions and headlining shows at the stately Paramount Theatre . Even while hosting heavies such as David Cross, Karen Kilgariff, Maria Bamford, Marc Maron, Kumail Nanjiani and Anthony Jeselnik, the event still feels indie, given its main perch along Denver’s hip South Broadway corridor, but also because of its affordable tickets, smart booking and curated local lineups. Performers TBD. Sept. 8-10. See more soon at highplainscomedyfestival.com .

“Weird Al” Yankovic’s storied career may seem improbable at times, but the master musical parodist has stuck to his guns through all manner of pop-culture battles and come out looking smart (also: silly, and intentionally so). He’ll stop in Colorado with stand-up opener Emo Philips for shows at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House (June 3-4) and later, at Colorado Springs’ Pikes Peak Center (Sept. 6), Grand Junction’s Avalon Theatre (Sept. 7) and Greeley’s Union Colony Civic Center (Sept. 9). Various prices. Visit weirdal.com/tour for details.

The 10 Best Stand-Up Comedy Specials Of 2022

Best of 2022: Sylvester Stallone And Martin Starr Of 'Tulsa King' Are The Year's Best Odd Couple

Best of 2022: 'sherwood,' this year’s best crime drama, isn’t about crime at all, anna menta's favorite line deliveries of 2022, best of 2022: 'abbott elementary' and quinta brunson reminded us sitcoms are supposed to be funny.

If the previous two years saw live comedy and the production of comedy specials derailed and/or transformed by the pandemic, then this past year found stand-up comedians rejoicing and reveling in their ability to reconnect and interact with live audiences again.

So many comedy specials in 2022 reflected this. Jerrod Carmichael and Yvonne Orji received perhaps the most impactful call-and-response moments from the audiences at their tapings, but they weren’t alone in engaging and feeding off of their crowds. Patton Oswalt devoted several minutes in his newest hour asking the most basic crowd-work questions. Atsuko Oktasuka and Chris Redd both took their crowd work to higher levels, while Joel Kim Booster singled out one audience member as a surrogate for an entire demographic to gauge reactions to his jokes. Alyssa Limperis looked for new dads in her crowd and invited one potential father figure onstage. Iain Stirling saw someone get up and walk out, and turned it into a whole thing, waiting for the man to return to his seat. Sam Morril captioned his audience interactions to make it even easier to imagine the TikTok clips. And you could see the sheer joy in so many of the comedians’ faces themselves, from just having these crowds to play off of, after enduring Zoom shows and outdoor shows and all the makeshift conditions of the past two years.

I’d also like to shout out some honorable mentions for folks who brought me joy this year but didn’t make the final cut. They included Cristela Alonzo, Chad Daniels, Vir Das, Earthquake, Alyssa Limperis, Sam Morril, Trevor Noah, Atsuko Okatsuka, Matt Rogers, and Ali Siddiq.

'norm macdonald: nothing special'.

The night before he underwent stem cell transplant surgery in June 2020, Norm Macdonald decided he should record the new hour he’d been working on, just in case he never recovered. Since the pandemic prevented him from filming it with an audience, he shot it alone to a camera in his home. He did survive the treatment and lived another year, but never got to tour again. So Norm’s producer edited the footage from this night, and Netflix delivered it to us, complete with a coda: a postscript panel consisting of David Letterman, Dave Chappelle, Molly Shannon, Conan O’Brien, Adam Sandler, and David Spade, talking about their friend Norm after just having watched the footage for themselves. As O’Brien said: “He had this folksy, completely out-of-time — I don’t know if he was born 300 years too late or 300 years too early, but he’s talking in a way — no one speaks like that.” Macdonald managed to be somehow timeless, outdated, and very much of his time, all at the same time. And only he could’ve talked this way in that condition without an audience and made it look so easy. ( Read my full review )

'Moses Storm: Trash White'

It’s a bit of a magic trick for a comedian to stand on a meticulously-designed stage, dressed head-to-toe in white to match the stage and the objects upon it, and then mock the “modern-day comedy special” for sometimes seeming more like a TED Talk than anything resembling funny, only to follow that by saying: “I have nothing of educational value to add to your night…I just want to tell you what it feels like to be poor.” And then Moses Storm did, making full use of the stage, displaying photos of his younger “little lady” self onto it, with a camera perched above that he directly plays to from time to time. To top it all off, he closes with a cliffhanger! If you watch til the end, you’ll be as intrigued as I was to hear Storm say the introduction for “Part Two.” ( Read my full review )

'Would It Kill You To Laugh? Starring Kate Berlant & John Early'

There’s a rich comedic tradition for overconfident characters who find themselves in way over their heads but cannot seem to get themselves out of the situation without making things worse. (See: I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson ; the movies of Will Ferrell.) Kate Berlant and John Early mine this tradition to great effect. And in the cinematic universe they’ve created for this special, they’re not only able to create surreal absurdist moments that allow for the currency of hot caramel or the existence of big dog families, but also to joke about each other in increasingly meta manners. Whether they’re attempting to one-up undermining each other in front of Vieira with backhanded compliments, or alone in a dressing room questioning the boundaries of their relationship, they prove time and again that as singular as they may be individually as scene-stealers, they’re a powerhouse duo together. Even if plenty of their sketches find themselves feeling a pinch of imposter syndrome. No, they belong here. They certainly belong here. ( Read my full review )

'Chris Redd: Why Am I Like This?'

Chris Redd exudes so much more energy onstage and control over his audience, making you feel like you wish you were in the room to fully catch the infectiousness of the joy he’s spreading. People may have been surprised to learn this fall that Redd wouldn’t return for a sixth season on SNL. But as he addressed this crowd (perhaps knowing he’d leave but not having announced it yet): “People think I’m living my dream because I’m on SNL,” adding “I’m living white peoples’ dream.” He explains: “I’m grateful. I’m blessed. It’s changed my life.” But do you think he’d still be 5-foot-6 if he were living his dream??? As a comedian and as a performer, though, Redd stands tall. ( Read my full review )

'Lil Rel Howery: I Said It. Y'all Thinking It.'

Lil Rel Howery had the happiest homecoming of the year, and director Ali LeRoi’s best decision was allowing the camera to linger on the comedian’s sheer enjoyment of the proceedings. That starts straight from the opening spotlight cue into a bouncy beat that brings the audience to their feet, with Howery applauding Crucial Conflict (“West Side’s finest” hip-hop group who opened for him, with a brief appearance over the end credits). In between, he dishes about some infamous moments caught on film over the past year, from a pastor robbed during a livestream service, to “The Slap” at the Oscars, and several Verzuz battles. When Howery says “I am happy as hell to be here,” we sincerely believe him. ( Read my full review )

'Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks'

What makes Bill Burr stand out among his peers is not that he plows ahead despite his detractors. Oh no, plenty of Gen X men in comedy seem to get off on their offensiveness and mine it for additional riches these days. But Burr also acknowledges where he may be wrongheaded, as well as where there’s room for growth and/or compromise, and ultimately progress. Perhaps he’s simply more skilled as a performer and comic. Perhaps having children has helped him see a better way forward. When Burr says midway through, “I am a changed person, believe it or not,” there’s at least one guy in the audience who vocally disapproves, and Burr challenges that man to see if perhaps his anger is misplaced, if perhaps that audience member is jealous or afraid of getting left behind by Burr. Either way, the comedian is changing for the better. ( Read my full review )

'Taylor Tomlinson: Look At You'

Taylor Tomlinson jokes that she questioned whether she should joke about her mental health, ultimately brushing the worry aside because, heck, she needed new material. Ultimately, she realizes how losing her mother to cancer affected her childhood as well as her early ambitions, which led her out of religion and into comedy and TV credits since she was 20. At one point, she asks rhetorically, “Do you think I’d be this successful at my age if I had a live mom?” before answering, “She’s in Heaven. I’m on Netflix. It all worked out!” Pause. “This is a real thing I said in therapy.” She can joke about all of it now, and to great effect. ( Read my full review )

'Sheng Wang: Sweet & Juicy'

Sheng Wang doesn’t mind sharing his secrets as well as his struggles as a comedian on the come-up, whether he’s sharing his poor eating habits on the road, or revealing that he once paid more to get to a gig in Boston than the gig was paying him. But it’s in his responses to these predicaments that he proves that the funniest comedians don’t need to wait long to make fun of their own tragedies, no matter how minor they may be. He even finds a way to turn annual rent increases in New York City into a motivational tool. And with all the current trending on social media about “quiet quitting” among Gen Z and younger Millennial workers, Wang already knows the score on how employees for years have used workplace settings to their personal advantage. Likewise, as the son of immigrants, Wang also can acknowledge that choosing a comedy career might not have been the best investment to prove his worth as an American. But it should pay off a lot more in the years to come. ( Read my full review )

'Jena Friedman: Ladykiller'

What might make Jena Friedman’s comedy tough to swallow for your typical late-night TV audience is precisely what makes her vital in starring vehicles where her penetrating punchlines and dark humor can truly shine. It’s no wonder Sacha Baron Cohen hired Friedman to help him maneuver his way through scrapes such as duping a pregnancy center doctor into believing his daughter needed a baby taken out of her. But Friedman finds herself cracking abortion jokes while carrying her own baby to term. Her personal circumstances, coming as they do when the politics have shifted, have led to perhaps her sharpest comedic work because it’s so laser-focused. Here and now, her sound and fury signifies everything. Friedman claims she chose political comedy because joking about sex and sexuality made her uncomfortable, despite the notion that women in comedy her age were encouraged to do so to make men pay attention to them. “Long story short, that’s why nobody knows me.” It’s about time everybody knows Friedman now. ( Read my full review )

'Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel'

Watch Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel on HBO Max

Jerrod Carmichael acknowledges not only the pressure an audience may feel once they realize that a filming makes them part of the performance, but also how he must feel knowing he’s recording this for posterity. So he unpacks his shame regarding his birth name, regarding the unfaithfulness and consequences of such by all three of his paternal ancestors, and regarding his own sexual conduct. In a lighter moment, he rationalizes: “if you knew them, you’d know keeping a secret is the only way to honor them.” For all of the seriousness of his revelations, Carmichael does manage to keep things from getting too dark. First, with the cultural references to Destiny’s Child, Terry McMillan, “The Color Purple,” and Tyler Perry movies. Later, as the audience indeed takes the comedian up on his offer to make the room feel like a family gathering, weighing in with observations and questions. But the audience mostly acts here as his surrogate therapist. Guiding him and supporting him through this hourlong confessional that helps him move forward into the light. It’s an hour that’ll have you talking and thinking about what comedy can do and what it can be. ( Read my full review )

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Kevin Hart waves to the crowd.

On May 5, Kevin Hart will host the ‘Roast of Tom Brady’ at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum as part of the Netflix is a Joke Festival.

However, that’s far from the only gig the 2024 Mark Twain Prize For American Humor winner has lined up this year.

From April all the way up until December, the prolific 44-year-old comic will perform at venues all over North America as part of his ‘Acting My Age Tour.’

That includes a pair of shows at Westbury, NY’s Westbury Music Fair on June 29 as well as one-offs at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center on June 30 and Poughkeepsie, NY’s MJ Nesheiwat Convention Center on July 20.

“This one is going to hit different,” Hart shared on Instagram , while describing the tour. “We’re on a different level, a different mindset.”

If you want to see what the “Ride Along” star has up his sleeve for his ‘Acting My Age Tour,’ tickets are available for all shows.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find was $16 before fees on Vivid Seats.

To be fair, that low dollar amount is a bit of an outlier (hint, hint- it’s for the Tom Brady Roast); other Kevin Hart shows have tickets starting anywhere from $55 to $389 before fees.

Hoping to find out how much seats are going for at the venue nearest you?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Kevin Hart’s 2024 ‘Acting My Age Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Upcoming Kevin Hart projects

Kevin Hart can’t stop working.

On top of his upcoming tour dates, he also has eight (!) movies and TV shows set for release in the near future.

Here’s what we know about each of the future flicks.

“Planes, Trains & Automobiles”  might sound familiar. In this reimagining of the 1987 classic, Hart co-stars with Will Smith as “a pair of unlikely travel companions trying to make their destinations in time for the Holiday weekend.”

“My Own Worst Enemy”  tells the story of an agent sent on a dangerous assignment and then receives an assist from an unlikely informant. Tim Story has been tapped to direct.

“The Great Outdoors”  will see Hart star in a remake of the 1988 John Candy-Dan Aykroyd comedy where a family on vacation repeatedly gets interrupted by their irritating in-laws. Teena Lewis and Tristan Cantave are set to co-star.

“Ride Along 3”  is an extension of the popular Hart-Ice Cube franchise featuring Hart as a well-meaning high school teacher who applies to the police academy to impress the girl of his dreams (Tika Sumpter). There, he meets her tough brother (Ice Cube), who, you guessed it, takes him on a ride along to set him straight. According to  Looper , director Tim Story wants to take the ongoing series to another country in a future installment.

“Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist”  has just Hart attached now; the series will tell the story of the infamous armed robbery after Muhammad Ali’s historical comeback fight in 1970.

“Borderlands,”  based on the popular video game, takes place on the desolate, fictional planet Pandora. In this abandoned world, adventurers seek out an elusive artifact. The stacked cast features Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Gershon and Bobby Lee.

“Uptown Saturday Night”  centers around a pair of pal’s night out where they chill at an illegal club, come upon a lost wallet and find a winning lottery ticket. Based on the 1974 classic featuring Sidney Poitier, Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby and Harry Belafonte. Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope,” “The Chi”) will direct from a script by Kenya Barris (“Blackish,” “Coming 2 America”).

“Monopoly,”  currently in development, finds a boy from the board game’s Baltic Avenue on a journey to make some cold, hard Monopoly cash. Tim Story will direct Hart again in a script by noted sci-fi screenwriter Andrew Niccol (“Truman Show,” “Gattaca”). Here’s hoping the movie, which has yet to enter pre-production, “gets out of jail free.”

“Die Hart 2: Die Harter” signals a return to Hart’s Amazon Prime series where he “plans an innovative action film with unscripted, unexpected scenes to cement his legacy as the greatest,” IMDb reports. Of course, high-stakes hijinks ensue. Nathalie Emmanuel, Ben Schwartz, Paula Pell and John Cena co-star.

Comedian Kevin Hart on developing stand-up routines while juggling entertainment company, venture capital fund

By Anderson Cooper

April 21, 2024 / 7:00 PM EDT / CBS News

There have been plenty of successful stand-up comedians, but few who've managed to do what Kevin Hart has. In addition to becoming a bankable movie star, he's also built an entertainment and business empire... and last month, at 44, he was awarded the Mark Twain prize for American humor - as close to a lifetime achievement award as you can get. Hart's comedy isn't particularly controversial, it's conversational with a lot of cursing thrown in. He tells revealing stories about his wife and four kids, his embarrassing insecurities and his many shortcomings. On stage Kevin Hart is an open book, but when we sat down with him… on one topic at least, he was a bit hard to pin down.

Anderson Cooper: GQ said you're 5'5", the L.A. Times says you're 5'4", and some other place said you were 5'2".

Kevin Hart: Well, that place is b******t. (laughter) GQ finally got it right.

Anderson Cooper: 5-- 5'5"?

Kevin Hart: 5'5".

Anderson Cooper: All right.

Kevin Hart: Five foot five. Like, with a shoe on, like a sneaker. Now, if I put a boot on, I can get to 5'5.5".

Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart has been telling tall tales about himself on stage for more than two decades.

Kevin Hart: It's talking about the things that you aren't afraid to laugh at about yourself. I'm really confident that the laugh that I'm getting, you're not laughing necessarily at me, as if I'm a joke. You're laughing at the experience. I'm giving you an experience through a story that is relatable. And more importantly, I'm saying things that other people just don't have the heart to say.

Anderson Cooper: I mean you told a story about your wife watching tall people porn.

Kevin Hart: Yeah. (laugh) Yeah, he was taller than me. (laugh)

Anderson Cooper: That was your main issue?

Kevin Hart: Yeah. "Why is he so tall? (laugh) Is that what you want?" That was real, we had a real conversation off of that. "Is that what you're lookin' for? If your search starts with tall.

Anderson Cooper: Is that-- you can't-- you can't fix that.

Kevin Hart: Yeah, no, I can't fix that. We got a problem. (laugh)

Kevin Hart (in Irresponsible) One of the sites wasn't even porn. One of the sites was a bunch of tall men being active. They were changing lightbulbs, putting s**t on shelves, hanging paintings. What kind of sick s**t is this? What the f**k is this? She was like, "what, you can't do none of that stuff, I like that stuff."

Hart is the highest-grossing comedian today. He sells out arenas around the world… and the occasional football stadium.

When we first met him in January at his offices in Los Angeles, he was working on new material for an upcoming comedy tour.

Anderson Cooper: To do an hour comedy special, how long does it take?

Kevin Hart: For me to really work on a set, eight to nine months.

Anderson Cooper: Are you sitting in a room with your team?

Kevin Hart: No.

Anderson Cooper: No.

Kevin Hart: I'm goin' back to ground zero.

Anderson Cooper: Just com-- small comedy clubs, trying it out?

  • Kevin Hart's daughter on her dad's embarrassing jokes

Kevin Hart: Small comedy clubs, rooms. I got two guys, Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells. They act as my writers. And what they do is they grab my material as I say it. But you can't write it down for me. Like, I don't-- I don't like the long jokes and long sentences. So it has to be in bullet points. Travel, bad, (laugh) bad travel. Why bad travel makes me drive. Driving, good versus bad. Everything has a good and a bad. My rule is when I get on stage, I would much rather have the dismantled picture in my head of kind of what I think it is, and it not be good, then figure it out in real-time and walk off stage and go, "It was somethin' there."

Kevin Hart and Anderson Cooper

A few hours later 3,000 people showed up in Pasadena, to hear Hart figure out his new jokes onstage. Everyone had to hand over their phones.

Before he began, Hart explained why.

Kevin Hart (on stage at Pasadena Civic Auditorium): Like 90% of what I'm going to do tonight I feel like is really good, the reason why I took your phones is because of the other 10%. Right? Like just in case. Just in case some of it's not, you don't have no proof.

We agreed not to record any of his routine either, but backstage we found his collaborators Harry Ratchford and Joey Wells taking a lot of notes.

Anderson Cooper: How was this audience?

Kevin Hart: This audience was great. Great. Like, you could feel-- the laughter never stopped. That's the beauty of the theater. The theater lets you really feel the highs and lows of a set.

Joey Wells and Harry Ratchford along with comedians Will "Spank" Horton and Na'im Lynn are among Hart's closest friends. They're also known professionally as the Plastic Cup Boyz.

Anderson Cooper: What are you actually looking for when he's on a stage and telling-- a joke? What notes do you have?

Joey Wells: Harry's always structure.

Harry Ratchford: Yeah.

Joey Wells: "We should put the joke here and move it around." And for me, I'm always just like how can he be just a little funnier? He might get a standing ovation. I'd go that was great. That was great. What if you tried this?

Spank and Na'im have known Hart since he was a teenager growing up in a rough neighborhood in North Philadelphia.

Anderson Cooper: Was Kevin always as confident as he is today?

Spark Horton: Yes.

Na'im Lynn: I mean, it was perplexing in-- in the beginning. Like, "Why does this little ugly dude have (laughter) this much confidence?" I didn't get it.

Spark Horton: North Philly, North Philly.

Home movies his mom made show Hart was always the family entertainer. He lived in a one bedroom apartment with his brother Robert and his mom Nancy Hart. She kept a close eye on Kevin.

Anderson Cooper: She planned every moment of your day?

Kevin Hart: Every moment. I had no free time. After finishing my homework, I had to get to swim practice. Me and my mom would walk home from practice. The homework that I was supposed to do beforehand, she would go over and check, and end up making me redo it, 'cause nine times out of ten, I rushed through it just to get it done. She would then make me read. And I would skip pages, not expecting the quiz of the book to come on the back–

Anderson Cooper: (laugh) Which she would give you?

Kevin Hart: --half, which she would give me when I said I was done. And then–Anderson Cooper: Do you–

Kevin Hart: --she would make me read it again.

Anderson Cooper: Do you credit her with the drive you have?

Kevin Hart: Absolutely. Absolutely.

Kevin Hart

His mom also kept Kevin's dad – Henry Witherspoon – at a distance. He was in and out of prison and addicted to drugs, which Hart talked about in a 2011 standup special called "Laugh at My Pain."

Kevin Hart (in "Laugh at My Pain"): I was into weird s**t like spelling bees, debates. Now here's the thing, my dad would show up to my events and treat them as if they were athletic events. First of all, you can't cheer for no kid at a spelling bee. It's a spelling bee. It's quiet, I'm focused. I'm in the middle of spelling a very difficult word. My dad shows up late. Busts through the back door high as hell making cokehead noises, alright. Once again, I cannot make this up. Alright, this is all I heard. I'm in the middle of spelling some s**t. Out of nowhere all I heard was: alright, alright, alright. Yeah!"

Anderson Cooper: The actual details of stuff he did are really heartbreaking.

Kevin Hart: Yeah

Anderson Cooper: And yet, you tell it in a way that's funny. Is it heartbreaking to you?

Kevin Hart: No. Because-

Anderson Cooper: It must have been, at the time?

Kevin Hart: I see it for what it was. But as a kid, that's dad. By the way, in my environment, that's the norm. It's normal to see a parent drunk, or whatever.

Anderson Cooper: Your dad, even in the depths of his drug use, he wanted to see you and your brother.

Kevin Hart: Absolutely, there was a period where he disappeared. I didn't see him in a long time. And I saw him on the subway. And he was in bad shape. And I was like, "Dad." He turned around and saw me– and doors open, my dad walked off and-- and ran. Later told me, "I ran 'cause it just hurt me for you to see me like that and that was one of his key factors into going and getting help."

Hart was eventually able to help his dad get clean before he died in 2022.

Kevin said his father loved to hear the stories he told about him in front of thousands of people…

…but when Hart started doing standup at 18, he struggled to find places to perform.

Anderson Cooper: You would take gigs wherever you could get them.

Kevin Hart: Like you're talking bowling alleys. You're talking cabarets, strip clubs.

Anderson Cooper: Is there a lot of comedy in strip clubs?

Kevin Hart: No, Anderson. Why you think there's a lot-- no. I don't know who thought that comedy and strippers mix. But I remember one of the most heartbreaking moments for me on stage is like in the middle of my set.

Kevin Hart

Anderson Cooper: This was at a strip club.

Kevin Hart: And I remember hearing this lady go, "Oh, baby." (laugh)

Anderson Cooper: After you told the joke?

Kevin Hart: "Oh, baby." Like-- like, basically so disgusted and heartbroken that this is what I chose to do with my life.

Hart thought he was about to make it big when he shot a sitcom for ABC called the "Big House" in 2003.

The network flew him out to the upfronts to present the show to advertisers and the media.

Kevin Hart: I'm next to walk on the stage so they can announce "The Big House." You're the guy with the microphone that's backstage managing. This is what I see. He's right here. I'm with him. Alright. I'll tell him right now. Alright Kevin. Hold up one second. They just said they're not-- they're not gonna go through or pick it up. Somebody should be back here to talk to you shortly." What does that mean?

Anderson Cooper: The guy with the microphone is telling you that your series is not being picked up by the network?

Kevin Hart: Not-- not-- the network exec, not–

Anderson Cooper: It's not the head of–

Kevin Hart: --not the head of–

Anderson Cooper: --not the CEO of Disney coming out and saying, "Hey"--

Kevin Hart: No, no. No, no. A guy name Barry in the back, holding the curtain.

Anderson Cooper: It was only because of that rejection–

Kevin Hart: I don't want to feel that. I don't like that you gotta hire me when you're ready. You're saying that my career is basically determined off of the needs of people that I don't know and that I don't talk to? (laugh) I might be sitting here all day if I don't go grab it and I don't go make what I feel should be mine.

And that is what he did. He started a small production company, now called Hartbeat, and began making his own hour-long stand-up specials. He also marketed himself relentlessly through social media…

…Hollywood studios took notice.

When he was picked in 2018 to host the Oscars it seemed like a highpoint in his career.

But then comments he made about gay people years earlier onstage and on twitter caused controversy.

Hart stepped down as the Oscars host.

Anderson Cooper: Initially you didn't apologize. Later on you did.

Kevin Hart: Well, later on the understanding came from the best light bulb ever. Wanda Sykes said, "there's people that are being hurt today because of comments like the ones that you made then. And there's people that were saying that it's okay to make those comments today based off of what you did then. It was presented to me in a way where I couldn't-- I couldn't ignore that. So in those moments of despair, great understanding and education can come out of it if you're given the opportunity.

These days it's hard to keep track of all the businesses Hart has a hand in. The weekend we spent with him he was in constant motion and promotion… starting with his daily pre-dawn workout.

Anderson Cooper works out with Kevin Hart

Then he was off to Walmart to publicize a nutrition supplement company he owns.

He's also got a fast-food chain, a tequila brand, and a $100 million venture capital fund.

And Hartbeat, that little production company he started, is now worth more than $650 million.

Kevin Hart: I'm no longer just a comedian. I'm an investment. I'm a studio. I'm a partner looking for partnerships. Work for hire is not in my best interest if it's a one and done situation.

That means the endless stream of movies, shows, podcasts, and commercials Kevin Hart pops up in... chances are Hartbeat is making money off them too.

Anderson Cooper: Are you a billionaire yet?

Kevin Hart: None of ya business... You tryin' to get me robbed? (laugh) You tryin' to get me knocked–

Anderson Cooper: But, I mean, look, y–

Kevin Hart: --in the… the head.

Anderson Cooper: I mean, you will be a billionaire.

Kevin Hart: I mean, hopefully. And-- even if I don't or if I'm not, I think the better side to what I've done is create what can become the new norm for other people in the business of funny, for other people in the business of entertainment, right? Not just being a part of the business, but learning and understanding how to be the business.

Produced by Nichole Marks. Associate producer, John Gallen. Broadcast associate, Grace Conley. Edited by Jorge J. García.

stand up comedy tour 2022

2024 is set to be a bumper year for comedy tours of all sizes. Top-class stand-up comics are touring the UK throughout the year, and well into 2025. If you’re looking  for tickets to attend a comedy show or stand up comedy gig near you, there are loads to choose from. Watch established stand up comedians and their razor-sharp wit, or get tickets to an up and coming performer.

Our Comedy Guide features a Coming Soon section, listing all the comedians who are currently touring or embarking on a tour within the next month. Right now, you can catch the following line-up of comedians:

  • Al Murray with The Pub Landlord tour
  • Bill Bailey with his Thoughtifier tour
  • Daniel Sloss with his Can’t tour
  • Ed Gamble with his Hot Diggity Dog tour
  • Frank Skinner with his 30 Years of Dirt tour
  • Romesh Ranganathan with his Hustle tour

In addition to seeing comics perform at comedy clubs and in arenas, you can also experience big laughs in the West End and at other theatres around the country. Edinburgh Festival Fringe has a rich line up of side-splitting talent that’s not to be missed each August.

You can look forward to a lot of comedy superstars hitting the road in 2024 and 2025 as they perform for audiences. In the “Coming soon” section of our Comedy Guide we tell you all about the comedy tours and stand up shows due to launch and head your way in the next six months.

The UK is home to several great comedy clubs. Enjoy stand-up shows, improv, storytelling, sketches, open mics and much more at The Comedy Store which has over 40 years in the business to its name. For a funny night out, visit their two permanent UK homes:  The Comedy Store London  and  The Comedy Store Manchester .

A night of comedy makes a great gift idea for birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas or really any occasion! Buying tickets to a comedy tour – or a Ticketmaster gift card if you’re unsure of the right comedian – are perfect to give anyone you know who likes a belly laugh.
