Kaziranga National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Sharanya Kumar

Kaziranga National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Greater one-horned rhinos, Royal Bengal tigers, Gangetic river dolphins and hoolock gibbons (the only ape found in India)—each of the four zones at Kaziranga National Park offers a sighting as unique as the other. Situated in the lap of the Brahmaputra floodplains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is not just known for the sheer range of its wildlife, but also its stunning landscapes—from marshy wetlands to savannas that spread as far as the eyes can see.

However, in order to make the most of everything the park has to offer, you have to time your trip right, get your permits in order, and book a hotel that’s conveniently located from the park. Naturalist Pallab Prakash Saikia,  who has nearly a decade of experience at Kaziranga and served as one of the guides to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their visit in 2016, offers insider tips on what to spot, the best zones for sightings, and much more.

What makes Kaziranga National Park special?

By boat, on foot, in a jeep, or on the back of an elephant, there is a myriad of different ways to explore Kaziranga, and that’s what makes the park truly special. Unlike many national parks in India, sightings here are guaranteed. “Within the first hour, you will spot at least seven-eight one-horned rhinos, some even with their calves. In another zone, if you hop onto a boat, you’re sure to see Gangetic river dolphins leaping out of the water by the dozen. Even tiger sightings are getting better by the day, with at least one a day. Last year, I even saw a tiger and tigress mating,” says Pallab.

Kaziranga’s lush Terai-Duar savannas are one of the last remaining grasslands of India. The park’s topography of wetlands, grasslands and woodlands is a unique composition, and the density of animals in Kaziranga is found in very few other national parks. Kaziranga has the highest population of one-horned rhinos in the country, with 2,613 rhinos in the park at the moment. According to a 2022 census, the park is also home to 121 tigers. Pallab points out that the rhinos at Kaziranga National Park have become accustomed to being in close proximity to humans. You can witness them in all their glory from as close as 10-20m.

Petting the rhino is strictly prohibited. But Pallab recalls the first time he had the opportunity to touch a rhino. The animal had wandered out of the park and into a neighbouring village due to flooding in the forest. He was desperate to wallow in some mud and water to escape the scorching heat. Pallab and his fellow guides led the rhino to a stream and gently bathed it. “His skin was rough, but he was incredibly placid.” However, it is important to remember that these gentle giants can be quite aggressive when provoked, and are extremely protective of their calves. Tease the rhino, and they will not hesitate to charge.

What to spot at Kaziranga National Park?

Kaziranga has 30 mammal species. Besides the one-horned rhinoceros, you can also spot tigers, water buffalos, the endangered swamp deer, elephants, pangolins, porcupines, fishing cats, leopards, hog deer, sambhar, otters, sloth bears, hog badgers, and wild boars. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the Assamese macaque, capped langurs and the hoolock gibbon. Gangetic river dolphins reside in the Brahmaputra, and are easy to sight all year round. They are heavily protected by the local authorities at Kaziranga.

The park also has 500 different species of birds, both migratory and resident. Some of them are winter migrants, while others are summer. Siberian ducks and geese are seen in the winter. Great hornbills, oriental pied hornbills and a variety of raptors are seen all year round.

What’s the best time to go to Kaziranga National Park?

The park is open from October to April, as Kaziranga gets flooded by the mighty Brahmaputra during the monsoon months. The best time to visit is between November and March, because the cool weather and lack of rain make for an ideal trip, says Pallab. During this period, all the animals, including rhinos, Gangetic river dolphins, elephants and tigers, can be spotted. If you want to bird-watch, November to February is ideal, as the migratory birds start making their way back in March and April. Tourists prefer coming in the winter, while photographers prefer March and April, when the visibility is higher.

How many safaris should you do during a 3-night stay?

Four safaris are ideal; one for each zone, suggests Pallab. Since the boat safaris are almost an hour away from the core zones, he suggests setting a day aside for that.

What are the safari slots in Kaziranga?

There are two safari slots each day, one in the morning from 7.30am to 10am, and the other in the afternoon between 1.30pm to 3pm. You are guaranteed a rhino sighting no matter what time you choose to go. However, you can only catch sight of gibbons in the mornings, as they typically rest in the afternoons, and are hard to spot after noon.

How to book a safari permit at Kaziranga and how much does it cost?

Tourists can book permits online on the official  website . The entry fee to the park is Rs115* per person for Indians and Rs700* for foreigners. Unlike many other national parks in India, Pallab stresses that visitors need not be concerned about any limitations of slots when they book their permits, as there are a large number of jeeps and guides ready to go at all times of the day.

How to book a jeep and guide at Kaziranga?

While it is better to book jeeps  online , you can also do it on the spot from the Jeep Safari Association counter, which is located right outside the park. Jeep rentals vary for different zones—central is Rs4,000*, western is Rs4,100*, eastern is Rs4,900* and far west is Rs5,500*. Jeeps and naturalists can also be arranged by your hotel at an extra cost.

It is not mandatory to hire a guide at Kaziranga, as jeep drivers are typically knowledgeable about the park and its wildlife. But if you wish to be accompanied by a local guide, you can hire one on the spot for anywhere between Rs700* and Rs1,000*.

Which zones are the best at Kaziranga National Park?

There are four zones in Kaziranga. First is the eastern zone or Agoratoli, which is preferred to spot elephants and birds during the morning slot. The central zone or Kohora is great for tigers and rhinos. While tigers roam in all four zones, the central zone has the highest number and is the best for tiger sightings. The western or Bagori zone is good to spot rhinos, too, as it has a larger grazing area. Since they are easily visible out in the open, this zone is particularly good for rhino photography. Sometimes you can spot tigers here as well. Lastly, the far west or Burapahar zone is good for gibbons and capped langurs.

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do in Kaziranga?

You can ride an elephant (for Rs1,450); it won’t take you too deep into the jungle, but you can spot rhinos and several other animals on this joy ride. You can also explore the Burapahar zone of the park on foot accompanied by a guide. If you’re in the mood to spot dolphins, the boat safari adventure starts from Kaliabhumura and Silghat (about 45 minutes away from the core zones), and costs Rs7,000.

Apart from this, you can visit the Kakochang waterfall and National Orchid Garden, or get a taste of the tribal villages of Mising and Karbi. Originally from Arunachal Pradesh, the Mising tribe stays on the banks of the Brahmaputra, and are mostly fishermen. Their houses, which typically have one large room, are built on stilts. Go on a guided walk to discover these villages.

The closest airports to Kaziranga National Park are Jorhat, which is a 2.5-hour drive, and Guwahati, which is a 4-hour drive. The closest railway station is Furkating station, 75km from the park. The station is well-connected with other major railway stations like Guwahati, Kolkata and New Delhi.

Things to Do

Where to stay, how to get there, tips for your visit, kaziranga national park.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve is renowned for having the largest population in the world of the prehistoric-looking one-horned rhinoceros. In fact, two-thirds of all one-horned rhinos in the world can be found inside the national park. Kaziranga is located in the state of Assam in the northeast region of India , so it's quite a distance from the usual Indian tourist routes and an ideal destination for adventurous travelers . It's nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, an area that is renowned for its unique biodiversity and untouched jungle paradise.

Reserve a jeep and head out on a safari around Kaziranga. Most visitors come to see the one-horned rhinoceros, which thrive in the swampy grasslands the cover many parts of the park. However, there are also all kinds of other animals to see here. Since tigers do reside in the park, it is officially considered a tiger reserve, although sightings are rare. More common wildlife you'll come across include wild elephants, buffaloes, gaur, monkeys, deer, otters, badgers, leopards, Indian pangolin , and wild boar.

Four main rivers—Brahmaputra, Diphlu, Mora Diphlu, and Mora Dhansiri—cross the park. The massive Brahmaputra River, bordering the park to the north, is inhabited by blind Ganges river dolphins, which you can see on a river safari. In addition, there are more than 250 seasonal bodies of water that attract migratory birds from distant lands as far away as Siberia.

Jeep safaris through the park are the best way to explore Kaziranga. Private vehicles aren't allowed to enter the park, so you'll need to book a tour on an authorized vehicle. Your accommodations can likely help you book a tour before arriving for easier planning, but you can also hire one of the vehicles waiting at the Kaziranga Tourist Complex, located just south of Kohora. It handles safari bookings and jeep rental. Jeep safaris can be booked on the spot, and you pay for the entire vehicle, so it's a good idea to wait around and try to join a group if you're traveling solo or as a couple to reduce the cost.

The park has four separate ranges that can be explored and each one has its own headquarters. There's the Central Range at Kohora, the Western Range at Bagori, the Eastern Range at Agoratuli, and the Burhapahar Range at Gorakati. Jeeps travel on a set route, and there are a couple of places where you can stop and get out of the car. The safari route in each range takes about two hours, and many visitors try to see two ranges during a day visit.

The most accessible part to visit is the grassy Central Range, but the Western Range is about 25 minutes away and has the highest density of rhinos. Ideally, aim to see both the Central and Western ranges by jeep safari, as they're very different in terms of landscape and foliage. The Eastern Range is about 40 minutes from Kohora and is best known for its wide array of birds and wetlands, although rhinos and other animals are also present. If you want to get away from the crowds, Burapahar is the least-visited range and the only part of the park that includes hiking trails.

Boat safaris also operate from the newly launched River Tourism Zone at Bhomoraguri in Tezpur, alongside the Brahmaputra River in the park's new area, to promote dolphin tourism. It's located about 30 kilometers from the Burapahar range. The safaris have three different routes, with the longest extending into Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary west of Kaziranga. However, the best place for river dolphin sighting is near Koliabhumura Bridge in Tezpur.

All budget hotels are in Kohora, near the Central range. It's convenient to stay there as both the Western and Eastern ranges are equally accessible from there. For travelers who want to spend a little more, there are some incredible options like luxurious jungle bungalows or a fully-equipped resort to focus on relaxing during your stay.

  • IORA - The Retreat : One of the most popular Kaziranga hotels is the sprawling IORA - The Retreat resort, located on 20 acres of land just a couple of kilometers from the park's main entrance. Best of all, it's reasonably priced for what's provided, with amenities like a spa, swimming pool, and fitness center.
  • Diphlu River Lodge : This extravagant lodge is located about 15 minutes west of the tourist complex, and has 12 cottages on stilts overlooking the river. It's definitely a luxury stay, but the scenic views and bungalow rooms are worth the cost.
  • Wild Grass Lodge : For a reputable budget option that's popular with foreign visitors and backpackers, the Wild Grass Lodge is located in Bossagaon village, a short drive from Kohora. Its safari rates are a bit less than other similar hotels.

The park is situated in the state of Assam in India's Northeast region on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. It's about 220 kilometers (137 miles) from Guwahati, 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Jorhat, and 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Furkating. The main entrance to the park is at Kohora on National Highway 37, where there are a Tourist Complex and booking offices.

There are airports at Guwahati (which has flights from all over India) and Jorhat (best accessed from Kolkata ). Then, it's a five-hour drive from Guwahati or a two-hour drive from Jorhat, either in private taxi or public bus. Some hotels will provide pick-up services, as well.

Buses and shared vehicles to Kaziranga are available from Palthan Bazaar, near the railway station, in Guwahati. There's an airport shuttle bus that goes to Palthan Bazaar. Alternatively, multiple buses to Kaziranga depart from the Interstate Bus Terminal in Guwahati before 10 a.m. If you arrive after 10 a.m. and want to take a bus, you'll need to go to the transportation hub in the south of Guwahati at Khanapara. Buses and other shared vehicles heading to Upper Assam are readily available there. Buses from Guwahati to Kaziranga can easily be booked on Redbus.in (if you don't have an Indian card, you'll need to use Amazon Pay because foreign cards aren't accepted)

The nearest railway stations are at Jakhalabandha, one hour away (trains run there from Guwahati, take the Guwahati-Silghat Town Passenger ) , and Furkating (for trains from Delhi and Kolkata).

  • Kaziranga National Park is open daily from November to April every year, although the exact dates vary based on accessibility after the monsoon season .
  • The peak time for visiting is December and January, when the weather is most comfortable. The park gets extremely busy during the peak season and it's likely to negatively affect your experience there due to the large crowds.
  • February to early March is the best time to visit to balance out the crowds with the weather. Crowds drop off in March but the weather becomes sweltering as summer begins .
  • A week-long Kaziranga Elephant Festival, held to encourage people to save and protect elephants, takes place at the park from February 11 to 17 every year.
  • Be prepared to pay several different fees to explore Kaziranga. Apart from the park entrance fee, you'll also need to pay for a vehicle entry permit, a jeep hire, camera fees, and also for an armed guard to accompany your tour—which is required of all jeep safaris.

With Kaziranga travel packages , hop on a tour to this park from November to April, and take rides on elephants or choose to cruise in a boat on the Brahmaputra river along the park. Inhabited by major populations including 35 species of mammals, out of which 15 are considered as endangered species; this park also shelters the highest density of tigers in the world and therefore it became a Tiger Reserve in the year 2006.

Things to do while on a Kaziranga Tour

Kaziranga is the place where man and nature meets together, where wildlife roams fearlessly, and where nature unwinds its pristine form in millions of hues. Comprising western, central and eastern ranges, the central range of the park doubles as the venue for elephant safaris. Here are a few things that you can do in this wonderful place:

1. Go on an Elephant Safari

Take rides on gigantic elephants, and go deep inside the wilderness of the park to enjoy the lush-green view, especially during the morning. This is one of the most effective ways of coming face to face with wildlife, since the elephants seem to know exactly where to go when looking for the elusive tigers and leopards.

2. Hop on a jeep safari

You can also choose to go on a jeep safari, which mostly keeps to the paved pathways inside the national park. A jeep safari is great for those looking for a little more comfort and want to cover more grounds in the hopes of coming face to face with wildlife.

3. Enjoy a cruise ride in a boat on the Brahmaputra river

This is one of the most popular things to do when on a tour of Kaziranga. Taking a boat ride on the Brahmaputra river will bring you that much closer to nature, and who knows, you might even get lucky enough to spot a few of those elusive Gangetic dolphins while you are at it.

Preparation Tips

Before you head for a Kaziranga tour, check out these helpful tips and enjoy your vacation hassle-free:

Kaziranga guide – Safari Costs, Timings, Best time to visit and tips

One horned rhino at Kaziranga

Kaziranga National park is located in Assam in north east India. It is a UNESCO Word heritage site and is known for Great Indian one horned rhinoceros. It habitates two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinos and as per the last census, there are more than 2400 rhinoceros in this sanctuary. It is also home to 25 globally important and 21 threatened birds. Kaziranga also hosts more than 110 tigers. This is the maximum density of tigers compared to any other tiger reserves in the world. Of all the national parks that we have visited, we loved Kaziranga the most. It is located along the banks of mighty river Brahmaputra and has vast expanse of fertile soil. This lush green sanctuary has beautiful landscape and is a photographer’s paradise.

Kaziranga - Photographer's delight

Use this first time guide to plan your visit to Kaziranga and what to look forward to.

When is the best time to visit Kaziranga?

March and April are the best months to visit the national park. The park is closed between May and October. Kaziranga is prone to floods every year and the authorities decide on the date to open depending on the floor situation. The weather starts getting hot by March and more animals can be located near water sources. Also, there is a controlled burning of tall elephant grass in the forest area during Feb end. This leaves the fields open and easier to spot animals.

How many days in Kaziranga?

Kaziranga national park is divided into 4 zones, also called ranges. Every range is unique in terms of the landscape and flora & fauna found. If you want to get a glimpse of the famous one horned rhino, even one Safari is enough. But if you want to check out all the ranges (which I will definitely recommend), a minimum of 2 full days is required. While Kaziranga is best known for its rhinos, it has the maximum density of tigers compared to any other tiger reserves in the world. Our guide Parag assured a guaranteed tiger sighting if someone committed to six safaris with him. So if you want to spot a tiger, plan for minimum 3 days at Kaziranga.

How to reach Kaziranga?

Kaziranga does not have any direct connectivity by air or rail. It is however, well connected by road to most of the major cities in Assam.

By Air: Closest airports are Guwahati (215ks) and Jorhat (75 kms) in Assam and Dimapur (170 kms) in Nagaland.

By Train: Guwahati (190 kms) is the nearest major railway station, but Jorhat (90 kms) and Furketing (75 kms) have stations too.

By Road: Kaziranga falls on the national highway NH 37. There are regular buses from Guwahati, Tezpur and Dimapur. All buses passing through Kaziranga stop at Kohora gate. We took a flight to Guwahati and had plans to go to Kaziranga by bus next morning. However, we hired a cab for 3 days at the last minute because our kiddo was not well and we thought journey by bus would be hectic for him.

Where to stay in Kaziranga?

There are many lodges in and around the major zones: Bagori(Western range) and Kohora(central range). This is where most tourists prefer to stay because of ease of accessibility to transport & food. Unless you are looking for a luxury resort, I will recommend Aranya Lodge, Prasanthi Lodge or Jupuri Ghar near Kohara main gate. These are government properties and are centrally located. We stayed one night at Prasanthi and one at Aranya lodge.

Prasanthi Lodge, Kaziranga

What are the different ranges in Kaziranga and what’s their speciality?

Kaziranga is divided into 4 zones:

Bagori Range (Western):

Bagori has the maximum density of rhinos. Along with rhinos, you can also spot swamp, sambar and hog deers, water buffaloes and numerous species of birds.

Rhinos can be seen up-close during elephant safari

Kohora Range (Central):

Kohora range has the longest safari route and takes around 3-4 hrs to complete the safari. You can see elephant, buffaloes, deers, turtles along with many birds. We were lucky to spot otter playing in grass, turtles basking in the sun, eagle, kingfisher, hornbills and huge number of monkeys. If you are luckier than us, you may be able to spot a tiger or two too!

Rhinos, deers and buffaloes together in the Kohara (Central) range

Agaratoli Range (Eastern):

Eastern range is the wetland and has a huge variety of birds. Along with rhinos, elephants, water buffaloes and deers; you can spot incredible flocks of waterfowl especially bar headed geese, waders, pelicans, eagles and many other migratory birds. The density of rhino is less in this range.

@Eastern range, Kaziranga

Burapahar Range:

This range is known for capped langurs and migratory birds. This is the least visited range because there are not many rhinos / elephants in this range.

What are the various types of safaris at Kaziranga?

Kaziranga has 2 types of Safaris: Elephant safari and Jeep Safari.

Elephant safari:

Elephant safari is allowed in 2 ranges – Bagori (Western) and Kohora (central). The one in central range is organized by the government and there are very few elephants, each of which carry anywhere between 2 to 4 tourists. Tickets for elephant safari in this range is difficult to obtain as most of them are issued to foreign nationals. There are around 25 trained elephants for safari in the western range and its much easier to get tickets through agents or through the lodge. Tickets are available for sale one day in advance at the central booking office (near Kohora range) between 7 pm and 8pm. It is best to get the tickets through the hotel/agent because they can get you confirmed seat. Elephants can get on the grassland where rhinos are munching and wildlife viewing is much more rewarding in this case.

Elephant ready for Safari@ Western Range

Duration of elephant safari: 1 hr. Elephant Safari timing at Kaziranga:

Jeep Safari:

Jeep safari is allowed in all ranges and the route is defined for these jeeps. Since jeeps can go deep inside the forest, there is a better chance to spot animals in wild. Jeep Safari timings: Morning 7:30 am to 12 noon and afternoon 1:30 pm to 5 pm.

Jeep safari@ Eastern range (Agaratoli)

What to do in Kaziranga apart from safaris?

Safaris take a lot of time in Kaziranga. Each jeep safari is 3 – 4 hrs and elephant safari is 1 hr. While you have flexibility to finish earlier in jeep safari (if you are not sharing it with others); the ride through the forest is lovely and the landscape is a treat to the eyes. There are a few other attractions in Kaziranga which can be done if you have time:We were there till the end of safari time and could have easily spent more time inside.

Kaziranga National Orchid garden and bio-diversity park: This is one of the largest orchid gardens in India and definitely deserves a visit. There are some 850 varities of orchids found in north east India and the park has more than 500 of them. The green house is lovely, and so is the photo house. There is a small playarea for kids, a tree house, a flower & fruit collection. You can also order Assamese thali inside the garden. The park also organizes a cultural program every evening at 6:30 pm for 2 hrs and a small 10 min cultural dance show happens every 30 min at the park.

Orchids at the orchid garden

Kaziranga Sandhya: Assam government organizes a one hour cultural program every evening at 7 pm. Artists perform Bihu dance and a Zhumoir dance and involve guests in the program; which makes it an enjoyable evening.

Kaziranga Sandhya near Kohora gate in Kaziranga

Kakochang falls: The Kakochang falls is also called Kaipholangso falls by locals. It is around 30 kms from the Kohora gate and till few years was not accessible. The place is gradually gaining popularity now because of the scenic view and bamboo chicken served by locals around the place. It requires a mimimum of 1 km of trek if you take a jeep which can cross small streams; otherwise you need to trek around 3 km of easy trek. You will need to budget around 4 hrs for the visit. We did not get a chance to go there but saw pictures on our guide’s phone.

Bamboo Chicken - photo taken from internet

Tea gardens: Assam tea is world famous and the area around Kaziranga has tea gardens on both sides of the road. You can visit one of the tea gardens near the Kohora or Bagori range and even buy some Assam tea from the stores around.

Costs associated with safari at Kaziranga National Park:

Other charges for Safari:

Tips for visitors at Kaziranga National Park:

  • Book a guide well in advance and have him take care of the tickets. The charges of guides is same whether you plan it yourself or through the hotel. Having a good knowledgeable and experienced guide makes the safari more enjoyable and memorable. I can recommend 2 guides – Parag Hazarika (Phone No. +91 8471813140 (Whatsapp) and 7002 241097) and Prafulla (Phone No: 99549 53056). Both of them are very experiences and passionate about what they do. They took care of both elephant and jeep safari for us.
  • Book accommodation in advance: We wanted accommodation at  Aranya Lodge but it was fully booked even 4 months in advance. You can check accommodation phone nos. on http://www.assamtourismonline.com/properties.html
  • Carry enough cash, lodges/ restaurants do not accept card.
  • Don’t rush through safari: Start safari on time and give enough time for each safari. There are many animals / birds in the sanctuary and spend as much time as you can.
  • Carry a good binocular: If you don’t have one, ask your guide if he has one. Close encounters will be very few and its difficult to get the best experience without a good binocular.
  • Carry mosquito repellent.
  • Take some books / games for the evening. There is not much to do after 6 pm; unless you are going for the cultural program. You will need something to do in the leisure time.
  • Government lodges don’t have internet connectivity so make your own arrangements if you need connectivity.
  • Keep extra camera batteries/ memory cards / power bank for phones if you plan to take lots of photographs.
  • Kaziranga is plastic free zone and plastics (except water bottles) are strictly not allowed during the safari. Take a bag along to keep your belongings and get the your litter back with you.

kaziranga trip cost

Hello Backpackers!

From Elephant safari to witnessing the one-horned rhinos,  Kaziranga National Park  offers arguably the best safari in India. One can indulge in two kinds of safaris – Elephant and Jeep. Elephant safari, that needs one to book well ahead in advance, starts usually early in the morning and is shorter in duration but one gets to experience of riding an elephant. Jeep safari offers the benefit of covering a vast expanse in a short span of time.

The national park is open from November through out the winter & good part of summer. It is closed with the onset of monsoons in North East – usually by mid March.

The rhinos, the elephants and the migratory birds simply make it an outstanding experience. It’s a place worth ticking off the bucket list.

Kaziranga and Meghalaya Tour In One Week

This one-week Guwahati Shillong Kaziranga tour package, covering the best places to visit in Meghalaya and Assam is arguably one of the best trips to North East India for 7 days . If it is your first time in the North East, this Kaziranga Meghalaya tour package will give you the perfect introduction to the hills and the plains of the region. And even if it is not your first time, a jungle safari in the Kaziranga National park followed by some wonderful time in the abode of clouds, Meghalaya is a delightful reason to spend one week in North East India. Our Kaziranga and Meghalaya in 7 days  trip starts from Guwahati and in the first leg takes you to the Kaziranga National Park – a UNESCO world heritage site.

Guwahati Shillong Kaziranga Tour Package

Day 1 – guwahati to kaziranga, day 2 – kaziranga to shillong, day 3 – shillong – double-decker living root bridge – cherrapunjee, day 4 – cherrapunjee to dawki to mawlynnong, day 5 – mawlynnong to shillong, day 6 – shillong local tour, day 7 – shillong to guwahati, one week trip to kaziranga and meghalaya – detailed itinerary.

Get picked up by a North East Explorers representative from the airport. Drive through the plains of Assam dotted by random, small towns all along, to the Kaziranga National Park. Evening free.

Start early and head to the safari entry point. You will explore the jungle slowly, from the back of mighty elephants. Enjoy watching the one-horned rhinos going about their daily life from close quarters. After the elephant safari, you will head out for a Jeep safari. Post which, you start for Meghalaya, the abode of clouds. On your way to Shillong, also known as the Scotland of the East, stop by the gorgeous Umiam lake and soak in its grandeur. With Umiam done, head to your wonderfully located Khasi homestay in Shillong and relax before heading out again.

Day 3 – Shillong To Double-decker Living Root Bridge To Cherrapunjee

Today will be the day when you see the bio-engineering marvel, the Living Root Bridges of Nongriat. Start from Cherrapunjee and head to the tiny village of Tyrna. Your trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge starts from here. It’s going to be a long day so, don’t forget your munchies and toffees. By the time you come back, the daylight would have almost given way to dusk. From there, drive to your Khasi homestay in Cherrapunjee for the night.

Start with what is known as Asia’s cleanest village, Mawlynnong. The drive is a beautiful one so, sit back and relax but don’t get too relaxed to not take a break or two on the way, just to soak in the beauty around. Perched atop a bunch of hills, the village sits right at the frontier between India and Bangladesh. Walk up the sky bridge to have a look at the Bangladesh plains below. Check in to a very simple but nice village homestay in Mawlynnong for the night and have your dinner there. No option of eating out today. Also, on your way, stop by the village of Riwai and visit the Living Root Bridge there.

Wake – up early and take a stroll around the village. Explore its hundred-year-old church, and the narrow lanes of the village, and learn about how the village is kept spotlessly clean by watching the villagers, kids to oldies, playing their part in keeping the village clean. Post breakfast, head back to Shillong. Check-in to your Khasi homestay .

Day 6 – Shillong Local Sightseeing

Today, we explore as many local interests as possible, in Shillong. From Cathedrals to beautiful lakes to museums, there’s a lot to explore in this lovely little but bustling hill town.

Start in Shillong at around and stop – by the Umiam lake. You can just sit and enjoy the gorgeous view of low-hanging clouds over this huge lake or go boating on its calm waters. Start for the airport from here max by 1 PM. Fly out with memories of a lifetime 🙂

**Please note that Elephant Safari is purely on a first-come-first-serve basis. While we will try our best to secure the same for you, we do not assure elephant safari. In the rare case where we are not able to secure elephant safari seats.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL KAZIRANGA?

Winter is the best time to visit Kaziranga National Park. During winter i.e. anytime between ends of November to first week of April you can travel Kaziranga. Winter in North East begins in early November and goes till end of March. The winters in these regions are soothing and travel friendly. The temperature in Kaziranga during this winter ranges from 24 degrees Celsius maximum to 6 degrees Celsius minimum. The long stretched vast swampy land of Kaziranga among winter mist appears majestic when you roam about this wonderland on an elephant safari. Exploring Kaziranga is best on elephant back as it don't follow any fixed path and takes you through some of the places where jeep cannot reach. Jeep Safari during winter holidays is also wonderful. Book an open hood jeep and explore some of the best ranges which offer majestic wildlife of Kaziranga from a close distance. Though Jeep safari can be little bit dusty but enjoyable. Summer is also a good time to explore Kaziranga, but hot and humid temperature and make you uncomfortable. Monsoon is not the ideal time to book any Kaziranga Package as this vast open land receives plenty of rains and every year gets flooded by mighty Brahmaputra River. Human and wild life becomes standstill during monsoon. So it is better to avoid Kaziranga tour plan between first of June to end of September.

We visited North East, mainly Kaziranga and Shillong, Cherapunji with NatureWings in last December with my family and friends. We were looking for the North East Package Tour in internet and got the NatureWings name along with few others. After going through their numerous reviews and their proposal we found they are the best specialist company for North East Package. After Availing their service, we are very happy and fully confident that we have chosen the right partner for North East Tour. In our group, we have 3 families with 4 kids and kids were particularly excited about the Kaziranga Jungle Safari to see the One-Horn rhino from the stone throwing distance. Our tour started from Guwahati and first we visited Kaziranga National Park. In Kaziranga Western Range, we took the early morning Kaziranga Elephant Safari . It was an amazing experience as through elephant safari in Kaziranga Western range, we went to very close to the One-horn Rhino teams. In the afternoon we went to Kaziranga Central Range for the Kaziranga Jeep Safari . In the open hood Jeep, we entered into the central range, which is consists of mainly tall grass and we could locate Rhinos from little bit distance. Our Kids were extremely happy to enjoy the both Kajiranga Jungle Safari. From Kaziranga we went to shilong and Cherapunji, where we have enjoyed all the sightseeing including Dawki River and Seven Sister Falls. Our Special thanks to Mr. Sandip Raha, Director NatureWings and his entire North East Team who made our trip perfectly flawless and memorable. We have taken Kaziranga and Arunachal Trip through NatureWings in this year January month. It was Nine Nights trip with my three friends and their families. Our trip includes Kaziranga, Tawang, Dirang, Bomdila and Bhalukpong. We are from Mumbai and we got the reference of NatureWings from one of my close friend, who took the North East Package from NatureWings last year and suggested me to take the Kaziranga Package Tour along with Arunachal with NatureWings only as they were extremely happy with NatureWings Service. So after a discussion, we did lots of customization as our choice and they revised the itinerary happily so many times. We have planned for Kaziranga Jungle Safari for long and our first day was in Kaziranga Jungle and on the next day early morning we took the famous Kaziranga Elephant Safari . It was only once in a life time experience as we could see the One Horn Rhinos just from few metre distance. In the afternoon, we took the Kaziranga Jeep Safari in the central range and that too was great experience. We stayed in a nice resort close to Kaziranga Western Range and resort was very beautiful with nice ambience, food and service were extremely good. Next day, we started for Western Aurnachal and we visited Bomdila, Tawang, Diranga and Bhalukpong and overall Arunachal experience was also very good. After finishing the safari we had a great breakfast at our hotel (which was booked by Naturewings team) and went for a drive to the part of the Kaziranga, Kaziranga Central range to enjoy the Jeep Safari in Kaziranga through the dense forest. Kaziranga is the best place to spot endangered One Horned Rhino. This sanctuary is divided in 4 ranges and the western and central ranges are the best to spot the Rhinos. It has to be done through the Kaziranga Jeep Safari in central range or the Kaziranga Elephant Safari in western range which anyone will love to go for. The elephant safari gets start by 5.30 in the morning and tickets were arranged by Naturewings team. We had a zeep safari so got a chance to see the lush greenery of the dense forest from the close. We spotted the tiger from a long distance luckily and got the glimpse of the famous one horn rhino. The best part of the trip is we avail the full service of Naturewings which was extremely satisfactory and hassle free. We thank Mr. Raha and his team for all their help and making our trip memorable.

Shillong Cherrapunjee Tour Package

Remarkable Experience, It was my first visit with NatureWings to Shillong, Cherapunji & most importantly Kaziranga National Park in the mid Feb. The best part to highlight is about Kaziranga Elephant Safari in Bagori Range though we have experience both Kaziranga Jeep Safari & Elephant Safari . But Elephant Safari was really unforgettable; It gives us better view of One-horned Rhino, dense forest & other wildlife. We must suggest all to visit Kaziranga National park and experience Kaziranga Jungle Safari and get the experience of staying at the forest. Last but not the least, I would like to give special thanks to NatureWings team who just haven't book the perfect hotels and all other arrangements, they have taken care of every small points and organised perfectly which made our trip a remarkable one.
