The best monsoon treks in India, as recommended by adventure experts

By Ria Gupta

The best monsoon treks in India as recommended by adventure experts

Different regions across India experience a different monsoon at different times of the year. While the Shola forests of Kerala develop a damp chill from the rains, parts of Meghalaya experience the wettest monsoon in India. In the higher ranges of the Himalayas, slopes drenched in monsoon showers give way to sun-soaked rain shadow areas during the course of a single trek. Here, tour operators, naturalists and avid trekkers recommend the best monsoon treks in India to witness the country’s varied beauty on foot.

Best monsoon treks in India

The aadrai jungle trek, malshej ghat, maharashtra.

The best monsoon treks in India as recommended by adventure experts

Level: Easy | Highest point: 2,490ft | Duration: 1 day “The Aadrai forest, located near Malshej Ghat in Maharashtra, is just beautiful. The trek begins from the base village of Khireshwar and spans about seven or eight kilometres into this forest. The trek is best undertaken in the monsoon, when the landscape is lush and covered in mist. The Kalu waterfall falls on the way, as do the Nageshwar temple and surrounding caves, which are a testament to local religion and history. This one is great if you’re looking for a beginner-friendly trek or are trekking with kids. The trek should be undertaken with a local guide or with a trekking company, as the rains could lead to mist taking over the trail, making it slightly difficult to navigate.” Manasi Kedar, operations head, Treks and Trails India

The Parang La trek, from Spiti to Tso Moriri, Himalayas

The best monsoon treks in India as recommended by adventure experts

Level: Challenging | Highest point: 18,300ft | Duration: 10-15 days “Few regions remain unaffected by rain. One such trek is the Parang La trek, which traverses from Spiti to Tso Moriri in Ladakh . Since these ranges are in the rain shadow region, variables that can make or break your plans–such as roadblocks, landslides and endless rainy days–will not impact your plans. There’s no habitation in sight for over a week as you make your way through the valley. What you can spot though, is the Tibetan wild ass, the kiang and the elusive Changthang or Tibetan wolf. The trek begins just after the high-altitude meadows of Kibber, which is the breeding ground of the famous Spiti horses. On the last two days, you camp at spots like the southern edge of the Tso Moriri. This lake is also the breeding ground for bar-headed geese, black-necked cranes and Brahminy ducks. [Late July to September remains the best time for this trek, as the snow begins to recede and a stunning desert landscape takes over with stark white peaks in the backdrop].” Vaibhav Kala, founder, Aquaterra Adventures

Garbett Plateau Trek, near Matheran, Maharashtra

The best monsoon treks in India as recommended by adventure experts

Level: Moderate | Highest point: 2,625ft | Duration: 1 day “In today's age of mass tourism and Instagram-driven vacations, any trek which allows you to experience a climb with a waterfall or natural pool and local meals, without thousands of trekkers on the trail, is the best trek. And for the last seven years, the Garbett Point Trek has been a personal favourite. It has all the trappings of a monsoon trek, with hikes around a lake, a beautiful waterfall, an uphill mountain climb, trails through local villages where you can meet local families and play with friendly animals, and a satiating end in the Matheran forest with a mouth-watering Maharashtrian village thali.” Kunal Sanklecha, mountaineer and travel guide

The Indrahar Pass Trek, Himachal Pradesh

Level: Easy | Highest point: 14,200ft | Duration: 4 to 8 days “In Himachal Pradesh, the monsoon season begins with heavy showers, but the rains peter out from August and become a drizzle in the tail end. There’s a beautiful trek from Dharamshala to Chamba through the Indrahar Pass. It’s a [roughly] six-day trek, and with Chamba falling in the rain shadow, you get to experience both the Himalayan rains and a dry trek. The mountains are clean, there are plenty Himalayan flowers, with fresh blooms in August. Chamba’s local culture is out on the streets during that time. Local festivals begin in May and go on till the monsoons–one such is the Minjar Mela (23-30 July), a carnival celebrating local agriculture that’s marked by song, dance and gaiety. Beginners can go up to the top of the pass, which is a four-day trek. But beyond that, seasoned trekkers can carry on for even an extended eight-day trek.” Prem Sagar, founder, Eagle's Height Trekkers

Laxmi Hill trek, Munnar, Kerala

How to get a 5-year multiple-entry Schengen visa

Aishwarya Venkatraman

Level: Easy | Highest point: 5,600ft | Duration: 1 day “Munnar, a town known for its greenery, becomes even greener during the monsoons. During this time, take a trek along the ridge of Laxmi Hill. The walk will lead you out of the town through tea plantations and grasslands. During winter, the trek is great for catching a good view. But a monsoon trek has its own charm—people walk through the grasslands to soak in the light showers, petrichor emanates from the earth while dust washes off the leaves. You can hear birds chirping and frogs calling, and if you couple the trek with a night walk, you can even spot mammals lurking under the cover of trees. And if the mist clears when you reach the top, there’s the added beauty of a great view. This is one of the easier treks in Munnar, contrary to the trek into the Shola forests of Anamudi mountain, the highest peak in southern India. It spans 10km which most people cover between three to five hours.” Hadlee Renjith, naturalist and founder, Resplendent Experiences

Tadiandamol trek, Coorg, Karnataka

Level: Moderate | Highest point: 5,700ft | Duration: 1 day “There are several treks in Coorg through Nishani Motte, Brahmagiri and Kotebetta, but the scale of Tadiandamol is something else. Tadiandamol is the highest peak in Coorg (Kodagu) district and the third highest in Karnataka. Located on the Kerala border, it overlooks a panorama of magnificent peaks like Soma Male and Chomakund. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Arabian Sea. The hills all around are carpeted in green, and the play of mist and cloud is dramatic during monsoons. On the way, choose a homestay like Honey Valley , Palace Estate , Coffee County Coorg or Bungalow 1934 ( call 07907960559 ) to savour local Kodava cuisine, including seasonal specials like bemble (bamboo shoots), kumm (mushroom), termay (fiddlehead fern), kemb (colocasia) curry and madd kool payasa (purple coloured rice porridge) made of the purple extract of the Justicia wynaadensis shrub. This is harvested on the eighteenth day of kakkada (the rainiest month in Coorg, falling across July-August as per the kodava calendar), when the medicinal properties of the herb are supposedly at their maximum. This is a one-day trek and begins from the village of Kakkabe. Start from the forest check post or from Honey Valley homestay. You can cover the 7km trail in two to three hours one way, depending on your fitness level.” Priya Ganapathy and Anurag Mallick, travel content creators, Red Scarab

The Great Lakes trek, Jammu & Kashmir

The best monsoon treks in India as recommended by adventure experts

Level: Easy to moderate | Highest point: 13,750ft | Duration: 7 days “This seven-day trek only opens during the monsoon season, as the trail remains buried in snow for the rest of the year. The high-altitude trek has much to offer—10 sprawling alpine lakes, lush mountain meadows, snow-clad peaks, blooming flowers, streams and waterfalls, and Himalayan wildlife at its best. The walk passes through the Sonamarg-Vishansar-Naranag stretch, ending at Narang, a small village located in a picturesque valley on the bank of Wangath River with ancient temples and other ruined structures of yore.” Nanda Rawat, operations manager, Trekup India

Valley Of Flowers trek, Uttarakhand

The best monsoon treks in India as recommended by adventure experts

Level: Moderate | Highest point: 14,100ft | Duration: 4-6 days “The Indian government announced the opening of Valley of Flower National Park in 1980, and in 2012, it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The valley boasts more than 600 exotic flowers from orchids, poppies and primulas to marigolds and rare flowers like Brahma Kamal, all of which grow in full bloom during the rainy months of June to September. Also part of the trek are cascading waterfalls, wild streams and some amazing wildlife like the grey langur, the flying squirrel, the Himalayan weasel, the black bear, the red fox and more. This trek can also be extended to Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib ji, a Sikh shrine surrounded by snow-clad peaks. One also has the option to make a day excursion to Badrinath dham. The 40km long trek can be covered in six days.” Nanda Rawat, operations manager, Trekup India

Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek, Meghalaya

The best monsoon treks in India as recommended by adventure experts

Level: Moderate | Duration: 1 day “Cherrapunji is counted among the wettest places on earth, and Meghalaya, also known as the ‘Abode of Clouds’, is stunning in the rains when the vegetation is lush, waterfalls run full and mist covers its valleys. The state is also known for its centuries-old living root bridges used to cross streams in remote mountainous areas. The most unique of them all is the Double Decker Living Root Bridge near Nongriat village–due to heavy rainfall and rise in the water level in the river, the lower bridge got submerged and locals promptly built another one, slightly higher. Once the waters receded, it resulted in two levels of the same root bridge. For a rain-soaked adventure, take the 3,000-odd paved steps built down a steep mountain slope near the village. These lead 2,400ft down to the floor of the river valley. The trail flattens out as you pass streams with aquamarine waters and rickety bridges, and at the end of it stands the Double Decker Living Root Bridge . On the way back, the unending elevator-like steps seem like the ‘stairway to heaven’. It’s a 3km hike to the bridge. The descent takes around two hours, while the climb back can take three to four hours (depending on your fitness level). The return can leave you winded. We would also suggest being careful while trekking during the monsoon season due to rains and slippery slopes.” Priya Ganapathy and Anurag Mallick, travel content creators, Red Scarab

5 Best Monsoon Treks in Himalayas

  • Experts Opinion

During monsoons, most of the treks are shut down due to heavy rainfall and landslides in higher altitude regions. But as they say, exceptions are always there. We have listed down the 5 greatest monsoon treks to kick-off your adrenaline. No more waiting for the monsoons to go away.

1. VALLEY OF FLOWERS TREK

Perched gracefully under the watchful eyes of the towering Himalayan peaks, the valley is situated at an altitude of 3,858m above the sea level. When the snow melts every monsoon and the sun shines brightly on this field, the entire valley comes alive and bursts into an array of colors. With a carpet of million species of wildflowers, snow-clad mountains in the backdrop and diversified species of butterflies and insects; this rich in bio-diversity valley is a paradise for every nature lover. The trek entrails from Govind Ghat, on the route to Hemkund Sahib. According to the holy Granth Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh(10th guru of the Sikh faith) had meditated on the bank of this lake. Encircled by seven snow-clad mountains and their associated glaciers, it reflects its surroundings enchantingly on its crystal clear serene waters.

2. KASHMIR GREAT LAKES TREK

Cradled in the lap of ravishing Himalayas, lies the crowning glory of India, the land of Kashmir, which is proudly denoted as paradise on earth simply for its serene pristine beauty that till date remains unmatched to any location across the globe. Get enchanted with Kashmir, a celestial land nothing short of a fairy tale. A surreal destination, there are many natural gems tucked away here. One of those gems is the Kashmir great lakes trek. Perfect for a monsoon trek it is a feast for the eyes. This trek is like an orchestra building up momentum with surprises of scenery every hour or so. With every step, the trek throws up a new vista to see, new scenery to unfold.

The trek is full of extensive mountain walking with some steep climbs and sharp descents.  Honestly, this particular trekking trip is not only a pleasure for the adventure seekers but it is an ideal expedition for the nature lovers too who finds it a privilege to bask in the undisturbed beauties of nature.

This trek is guaranteed to leave you awestruck as it simply unwraps the mesmerizing beauty of the region filled with sparkling high altitude lakes amidst alpine meadows and beautifully dotted with amazing colorful orchids. Alpine and snow-clad mountains, green meadows, rocky terrains, gurgling streams, silver birch and other untouched beauties of Mother Earth make for a varied and complete trekking experience.

3. TARSAR MARSAR TREK

The Mughal emperor Jahangir was so intimidated by the beauty of Kashmir that he exclaimed "Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin asto" (If there is a heaven on earth, it's here, it's here, it's here). Tarsar-Marsar is just the right trek to do justice to that quote.

This trek encompasses a journey to the two beautiful almond-shaped twin lakes Tarsar and Marsar surrounded by the peak of Kolahi mountains.  The trek's highest Peak that is achievable is 13,000 ft. The lakes are surrounded by stunning alpine trees and the experience is even more commendable during the summer when the alpine flowers form a radiant sheet reflecting on the water. Also, the other traceable floras include blue Poppy, Geum, Gentian, and Hedyseram. Camping next to high altitude alpine lakes is what you will never forget. Waking up to see a vast water body is just as mesmerizing as it gets.

4. HAMPTA PASS AND CHANDRATAL TREK

Situated in the state of Himachal Pradesh, this is a perfect trek for beginners. Hima means snow in Sanskrit; so Himachal translates to in the lap of snow. The mountains of the state are used for many varied adventure activities ranging from paragliding to trekking. Hampta pass connects the Kullu valley to Lahaul Spiti valley. Manali's vivid typography makes this one of the most preferred monsoon treks. The variation in the train makes every day different from the previous one. The trek trails through open green pastures, meadows and glacial valleys. 1 extended day to visit Chandratal (an alpine lake) is just a cherry on the top.

5. MARKHA VALLEY TREK

This trail goes through giant rock pinnacles, beetling cliffs, narrow defiles, prayer-flagged passes and evidence of traditions so old it is guaranteed to give you chills. Also known as the tea house trek, it takes you through Hemis Nation Park. Now, if the breathtaking beauty of the contrast in the arid cold desert wasn't enough, the nail-biting waist-deep river crossing in the Markha river is sure to make you fall in love with this trek. The USP of this trek is definitely the two-pass crossing it has to offer, you will be at the edge of your adrenaline as you cross Gandala la at 15,748 ft. and Kongmaru la at 17,060 ft. Pass through ancient villages and rocky canyons to rediscover the adventurer in you.

The following five monsoon treks, perfectly encapsulate the beauty and effervescence of trekking. They will force you to consider planning a trip to these amazing locations.

1. Valley Of Flowers Trek

valley of flowers trek - one of the best monsoon treks

Location: Uttarakhand

Altitude: 14,400 ft

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: 6 days

This trek is considered iconic, primarily because of its description in the ancient Indian texts and mythology. However, the enigma surrounding the valley of flowers comes from its abundance of gorgeously scented wildflowers. The whole trail is surrounded by these beautiful flowers, making you feel like you are walking on petals.

The blossoming of the alpine flowers occurs from June to October, and therefore, it is the ideal time to trek and witness this miraculous place. The lush green vegetation in the monsoon will cure your urban fatigue the moment you will open your eyes and smell the wind of this valley.

Usually, this trek is characterized as moderate in terms of difficulty, but it is prudent to not underestimate this trek.

2. Tarsar Marsar Trek

best monsoon treks

Location: Kashmir

Altitude: 13,201 ft

Duration: 7 days

One of the premier showcases of the exotic beauty of the Kashmir valley is this gem, Tarsar Marsar trek. Tarsar marsar trek has made a name for itself as one of the most scenic monsoon treks in India.

The major attraction of this beautiful trek is the three lakes, Tarsar, Marsar and Sundarsar. These alpine lakes are a sight to behold, and the trek provides a perfect opportunity to explore these mesmerizing lakes.

Among all lake, Marsar Lake is a standout attraction of this trek due to its large size and almond shape. The view of the lake from the far end is spectacularly riveting.

The best time to do this trek is during the monsoon, which starts in July and ends in September. During July the residual snow is still visible on the trail and in August,  the lush green imagery will overwhelm your senses. In the first week of September, you are likely to encounter a colourful onset of winter.

Visiting this paradise on earth could be life-changing for you. All you have to do is pack your bags and venture on the adventurous journey.

3. Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

5 monsoon treks

Altitude: 13,800 ft

Difficulty: Moderate-Difficult

One of the truly remarkably beautiful lakes in all of India is the Great Lakes of Kashmir. You will encounter these seven magnificently gorgeous lakes on the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.

The signature element of these lakes is the snow patches that give these lakes their uniquely surreal visuals.

The meadows on this trek are equally breathtaking, making this trek worth the effort. This trek is moderately difficult and therefore, requires some preparation on your part.

The highlight of this trek is the alpine lake of Gadsar. Being less travelled among other lakes on this trek, Gadsar retains its naturality for the most part. This pristine lake is enveloped with a delicately large meadow filled with exquisitely colourful wildflowers. The contrast of the blue lake and the colourful flowers makes for striking imagery.

The view from Gadsar pass, which is one of the highest points of this trek is unparalleled. Other highlights include the Sastar meadows and the Gangbal campsites, that are well known for its never-ending treeline and immaculate scenery.

4. Bhrigu Lake Trek

5 monsoon treks

Location: Himachal Pradesh

Altitude: 14,009 ft

Duration: 4 days

The delightfully green meadows of this moderately difficult trek, adds a unique texture to its magnificent glory. The trail will accompany these alpine meadows, all the way up to the Bhrigu lake.

This 4-day trek offers a vivid scenery that combines magnificent mountain peaks, glacial lakes and radiant meadows. Though the trek could be a little challenging, it is perfect for beginners. The trek is easy to access from Manali. And boasts of being one of the best monsoon treks in Himachal Pradesh.

If you want to experience trekking in the thick of the snow, June onwards is the perfect time to trek. Also, the magnificently beautiful Bhrigu lake is still frozen in June, providing you with a brilliant view of the grand and impressive lake. The lake changes its colours and textures with seasons, making it a discovery every time.

What makes the climb on this trek particularly rewarding, are the impeccably virile and endlessly vast stretches of grasslands. Also, the spectacular views of some of the biggest mountains of Manali, adds to the charm of this trek.

You will witness the outstandingly mighty peaks of Ladakhi, Shitidhar and Hanuman Tibba while walking through the grasslands. On the top, you will encounter Indrasen and Deo Tibba as well.

5. Hampta Pass Trek

hampta pass trek

Altitude: 14,065 ft

The last trek on this list is an absolute delight, particularly for adventure seekers and trekking enthusiasts.

The first campsite at Jobra kicks off the adventure, which accelerates at the next campsite at Jwara. This second campsite is the home for the phenomenal wildflower meadow. The trail then leads you to Balu Ka Gera and the desert Oasis of Shea Goru.

Needless to say, with so many different landscapes packed into a short trek of 6 days, you are getting more bang for your buck. However, these drastic changes in the scenery are just the beginning, there are a whole lot more for you to discover on this singular trek.

The pass-crossing at the Hampa pass is the ultimate attraction of this trek. The trail transverses out of lush green valleys of Kullu to a perpendicular overhang, placed high up in the mountains. The view from above is nothing short of cinematic. The marvellous panoramic vision of the Lahaul valley and the nearby mountains will leave you awestruck. But you have to put an effort to earn these spectacular views. This moderately difficult trek can be a bit demanding at some points.

Going through this list, you are likely to get enticed into planning your monsoon expedition. The thing to keep in mind is to prepare yourself for the strenuous trails of these treks. A little bit of preparation will enhance your enjoyment of this wonderful journey.

Best treks in monsoon (July & August) on the Himalayas

Getting monsoon rain in general is not a good “thing” for trekking high up on the Himalayas. At the same time there are regions in the Indian Himalayas where monsoon has little or almost no impact. Remember that a rain/shower/drizzle is very common in most of the treks during summer months as well.

But monsoon rains are different and can continue for a  day and night, if not more. Quite obviously none of you intend to walk in the rains or amid foggy weather so that you miss most of the grand views of the high mountains and snow clad peaks.  Frequent and or continuous rain is indeed a spoiler on a trek. There are other risks as well like landslides or a rare cloudburst.

foggy-weather-is-common-in-monsoon-treks

This already may sound demoralising? I was only emphasising that you should be careful in selecting your monsoon trek. Be rest assured that there are sound reasons to trek in monsoon i.e. in general during July and August. And we do have a wide range for all, starting from a beginner to an expert. So no hurries and no worries.

Why a monsoon trek?

Monsoon is the greenest part of the year in the Himalayas, just like across the country. Most flowers bloom during this time especially above the treeline, i.e.on the alpine meadows. Rocky barren landscapes do produce stunning hues when it gets its portion of rain. Usually if you get a view after, that will be clearer and haze free than in summer.

Last but not the least, your job! Maybe this is the time that you can take your holidays.  Rest assured that there are quite a few treks which are pretty safe in monsoon. Be it in aspects of “views” or any other risks due to frequent rains. As we go through this article, hopefully you will develop an understanding and be aware of some treks which are best done during monsoon months.

miyar-valley-beautiful-in-monsoon

Let’s get an understanding first that you will get to know the spectrum of best, rather perfectly fine treks in monsoon. I hope then it will be much easier for you to choose your best trek in monsoon henceforth. Remember that it is important to choose the “right treks list” rather than just following a”list of best treks”.

Monsoon and its arrival in the Himalayas:

Summer monsoon is the effect of southwesterly monsoon winds across a vast part of India. This south-west monsoon brings most of the rainfall during a year in India. It arrives early June in Kerala and progresses to the north and eastward directions through different branches.

arrival-of-south-west-monsoon-in-india.

Following its course, it reaches to the eastern Himalayan foothills as early as the beginning of June. Whereas in western Himalayan foothills towards the end of June. As we move from east to west in the Himalayas, yearly average rainfall decreases significantly.

In our purpose to learn about best treks in monsoon we will consider monsoon  season as July and August primarily. Although some areas are affected until mid of September. Still high altitudes above 3000 m/10000 ft have lesser impact at this late stage.  If you have a priority to get clear weather you should keep another 15 days or so that any impact of residual rain is minimal.

Now let us have a look at the below chart. This bar chart is based on the IMD website and their research data. This is a normal monthly rainfall distribution of the Himalayan states/region which we are interested in. Just to note that as per IMD convention, up to +- 20% deviation is considered “normal”, +20% or above is “excess” and -20%  and above is “deficient” and so on. The chart is quite straightforward to understand.

statewise-monthly-rainfall-in-the-himalayan-states-in-india

Choosing the right Himalayan region for your monsoon trek in the Himalayas

From the above chart, it is quite clear that rainfall reduces consistently from east to west within the Himalayas. Annual as well as monsoon rainfall i.e. for July and August is significantly less from east to west direction. However, do continue to read so that you can make a well informed decision.

1) Eastern Himalayas ( Darjeeling/Sikkim treks ): Monsoon is heavy and longer here. On an average the area receives more than 2000 mm of annual rainfall. E.g. Darjeeling and Gangtok receives ~ 3000 mm of yearly rainfall, of which more than 90% is during monsoon. Expect frequent/continuous heavy rains here between early June to mid September. Due to warmer temperatures leeches are another nuisance here for treks in monsoon. Avoid trekking in Darjeeling and Sikkim between June to mid September.

arjeeling-sikkim-remains-foggy-during-monsoon

2) Western Himalayas: This part of the Himalayas can be divided further into the following from east to west direction.

A) Uttarakhand treks : Monsoon is consistent here in July and August. On an average this state receives ~ 1250 mm of annual rainfall. Avoid treks in Garhwal as well as treks in Kumaon region within Uttarakhand during July and August. Exceptions are those treks which are particularly beautiful in monsoon, i.e. have its reason(s) to visit amid rain.

Note: Monsoon/rain has minimal impact on higher altitude above 4000 m/13000 ft. Traditionally late August to early September is a good time for treks going around or above 5000 m here in Uttarakhand.

B) Himachal Pradesh treks : Here the situation is a bit complex. You need to understand where your trek route is. The state receives a good amount of annual rainfall ~ 1250 mm (similar to that of Uttarakhand) although it varies to a great extent from one region to another within the state.

All three major Himalayan ranges have their part in Himachal. From south to north runs Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal and Great Himalayan range of which the first two merges near Manali-Rohtang pass region. Additionally Himachal has its share in the Zanskar range which runs north of the Great HImalaya.

Let’s have a look at the below “normal” distribution of monthly and total yearly rainfall of the districts of our interest within Himachal. On the other hand I have skipped the data for the districts which constitute entirely foothills or lower hills (Shivalik region).

district-wise-monthly-and-total-annual-rainfall-within-himachal-pradesh

Note: The rainfall during winters from Dec to Feb and early spring (March) are very likely to trasslate to a snowfall on the higher altitudes.

From the above chart you can surely see that Kangra and Chamba district get most of the rain within this state and so as during monsoon. Simply avoid the treks which lie entirely within this region. Choose a different time for treks like Triund, Kareri Lake, Indrahar Pass, Minkiani Pass etc. In general treks starting or ending around Dharamshala, Bharmour etc are not at all good options for monsoon.

The conditions are somewhat similar in Kullu-Manali-Parvati valley and Kinnaur regions which receive the usual monsoon in July and August. Many popular treks in this region which are south of the Rohtang like Pass like Bhrigu Lake, Beas Kund, Kalihani Pass/Bara Bhangal, Chandrakhani Pass, Sar Pass, Deotibba base camp, etc. have better season(s) to go than in July or in August.

Treks originating and spanning within Great Himalayas or Zanskar ranges are pretty good options during monsoon in Himachal Pradesh. As a matter of fact, this is the best time to visit this high altitude region. From September onward some of these routes become pretty cold. On the other hand treks lying within Dhauladhar or Pin Panjal are not that favourable in monsoon.

Last but not the least, few trans Himalayan treks in this state which span across different ranges within Himalayas do receive frequent moderate rain. Treks  like Hampta Pass, Pin Parvati Pass or to an extent Pin Bhaba pass treks are more or less monsoon affected. Similarly Kinnaur and upper regions of Shimla hills (treks like Lamkhaga Pass, Borasu Pass, Rupin Pass or Buran Ghati)  also get usual monsoon during monsoon. You should avoid these regions from early July to late August.

hampta-pass-early-august

Lahaul and Spiti region treks including upper reaches of Chamba, Pangi and Miyar valley treks are perfectly fine during monsoon. This area receives occasional rain during July and August and the arid regions become somewhat green with different shades and usually better during the monsoon.

spiti-valley-in-monsoon

C) Kashmir treks :  This area has little impact due to monsoon. Kashmir valley falls in the leeward side of the monsoon winds and is positioned between Pir Panjal and Great Himalayan range. A major portion of the rainfall occurs in winters, due to western disturbances. You will still get some scattered rainfall in July and August, usually up to an hour or so. Continuous monsoon downpour is rather rare.

monsoon-is-best-time-for-kashmir-valley-treks

Another strong reason to visit Kashmir in monsoon is its nature of the landscapes. Already green by summer this region becomes luxuriant during July and August. Some rain (low to moderate) makes it lively and richer. Verdant meadows with wildflower carpet, gushing streams and an array of Chinar and Cedar forest, alpine turquoise lakes, all in all truly connect to a paradise on Earth – Kashmir.

kashmir-valley-in-august

D) Leh ladakh and Zanskar treks: Ladakh is safest to trek, if we consider monsoon. This area has evenless impact of monsoon winds and historically this is a good time to explore the trails here. Ladakh region being a high elevation cold desert of India is marked by extreme aridity with acute moisture deficit throughout the year. Annual precipitation is extremely low due to rain shadow effect caused by Karakoram ranges on one side, mighty Greater Himalayas and Zanskar ranges on the other side.

This dry and arid region gets some green shades  during July and August that the landscapes produce starking colour contrast. Although there are many treks in this region, but most of them are long duration treks which are often strenuous or difficult in nature.

Our top 10 picks for best treks in Monsoon:

Here are the very likely favourites for monsoon treks in the Himalayas. The list has Easy, Moderate and Difficult grade treks which are beautiful during monsoon or have its very reason(s) to visit even if it rains. On the other hand if there is a better time than monsoon for a given trek, then simply avoid monsoon.

Remember the rule of thumb? As we move east to west, you should be less affected by monsoon rain, i.e. between July and August. Also we are not considering treks which have a much better season(s) to visit in a calendar year.

10 Brilliant Himalayan Treks To Do in Monsoon (July, Aug, Sept)

Category Guides To Choose Treks Season Wise Guides

By Latika Payak

July, August, and up to about the middle of September are popular times to trek. Kashmir, the mountains of northern Himachal Pradesh, the rain-shadow regions of Jammu, and the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand are all at their most beautiful during this time.

There’s another thing. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always pouring on a monsoon trek. Many trekkers have started realising that.

Here’s a figure that may surprise you: As I write, 2,021 trekkers have already registered for an Indiahikes trek this monsoon . It gives you an indication of how much trekkers love trekking during this period.

And if you are considering trekking in the monsoon, here are the top 10 treks you must think about:

Treks in Himachal Pradesh

1. chandrakhani pass trek.

Difficulty : Moderate  |   Duration : 5 days  |   Pick-up:  Manali

5 monsoon treks

This is one of the oldest treks in our country,  It runs along an ancient trade route which connects the Kullu valley with the Parvati valley. There is a clear difference between the cultures, and architecture in these two valleys as they were home two distinct ancient civilisations.

You'll notice the difference on your Chandrakhani Pass trek, as you pass the old villages of Kullu valley and then cross over into the Parvati valley.

This experience Chandrakhani Pass trek apart from other crossover treks.

2. Bhrigu Lake

Difficulty : Moderate, Level 2  |   Duration : 4 days  |   Pick-up : Manali

If you’re looking for a quick escape into the mountains, then  Bhrigu Lake  is a great option. It climbs right out of Manali into the mountains, and you see Manali getting tinier and tinier below you.

Ahead of you, the grandest of meadows open up.

Our founders were stumped looking at these meadows when they went late in August. They were fresh, green and expansive, stretching to as far as the eyes could see! Higher up, you climb to the lake, frozen in June, a forget-me-not blue in monsoon.

If you have just around four days, this is your trek!

3. Beas Kund

Difficulty : Moderate, Level 1  |   Duration : 4 days  |   Pick-up : Manali

Just like the  Bhrigu Lake  trek,  Beas Kund  also offers a quick getaway from Manali and takes you on one of the most beautiful landscapes, leading you to the source of river Beas that flows through the town.

This trek is an amphitheatre of big mountains!

The Beas Kund trail offers you close, base-to-summit views of big mountains  of Manali like Friendship Peak, Shitidhar, Ladakhi and Hanuman Tibba. This is just within four  days  of trekking! These kind of views of a mountain are usually gifts given to mountaineers and hardcore trekkers –  after days of rigorous trekking.

On a clear day, you’ll also be able to spot Mt Indrasen, Deo Tibba and more peaks from the Pir Panjal range.

4. Miyar Valley Trek

Difficulty : Moderate, Level 3  |   Duration : 7 days  |   Pick-up : Manali

5 monsoon treks

In the remote region of Lahaul, a valley filled with flowers hangs quietly, escaping the attention of trekkers. The route to this valley alternates between remote mountain valleys, quaint villages, and flower beds dominated by the overwhelming presence of Himalayan orchids. This valley is Miyar Valley.

The S-shaped Miyar Valley sits in between Zanskar and Chamba. It is nearly 75 km long. The Miyar glacier is nearly 36 km long to Kang La (17,600 ft pass to Zanskar).

At the snout of the glacier are seven crystal clear blue ponds, considered to be sacred by Buddhists. Trekking here is a rare opportunity for most trekkers. And doing so in isolation, with very few others on the trail is a godsend.

Pin Bhaba Pass is hands down the most dramatic pass crossing trek in our country. That is a bold statement to make. Especially when we have so many pass crossing treks in our country.

But what you see when you stand at the pass is a testament to this bold statement we make.

Once at the pass you see Pin valley below you, in various shades of pink, set amidst the  stark and deserted mountains  of Spiti.  While behind you is the  lush green Bhaba valley.  That is when you realize how remarkable the changes in the landscape are.

Treks in Jammu & Kashmir

This is the newest trek on our list lies in the Kishtwar National Park. It blends the beauty of Kashmir with the kind of landscape we have not usually seen on treks.

On this trek, you witness the tall mountains that cordon off Kishtwar from rest of the landscape. These mountains rise tall, above 6000 m.

Another section that sets this trek apart is its forests. None of our treks in Jammu and Kashmir are known for their forests. Kishtwar is known for its forests. You trek through the heart of the Kishtwar National Park. The best of the woods of Kishtwar are on this trek.

There are treks like Kashmir Great Lakes , Tarsar Marsar and Nafran Valley . People post about these treks and go gaga. But the Bodpathri Lakes Trek, like an older brother, was waiting for its time. After being under the army's jurisdiction for decades, the trek can now stand up on its own and claim its place among the greatest treks of Kashmir.

8. Gurez Valley Trek

Difficulty : Moderate, Level 3 | Duration : 7 days | Pick-up : Srinagar

5 monsoon treks

On this trek, you come across the sight of lush green and barren mountains at the same time. It's stunning! Photo by Nitesh Kumar

India ends at Gurez. The significance of this is enormous. If you look at our country as a whole, we travel upwards from Kanyakumari. There comes the point where we cannot travel any further north. That part of our country is Gurez.

The significance is that the Gurez is the last latitude of India, which is why it is very unlike any other part of Kashmir. The topography changes totally even though it is only 6 hours north of Srinagar. You will notice it in the trees especially. The trees are different, and so are the way they are laid out in the valley. The Razdan pass you cross to get to Gurez pushes you to a very different landscape.

The Gurez valley trek has astoundingly different forests, grasslands and two lovely lakes (and one we camp beside). The scenery is spectacularly unusual.

For a long time, we’ve been looking for another trek in Kashmir that matches up to our blockbuster treks,  Kashmir Great Lakes  and  Tarsar Marsar .

For us finding anything that compares to the great two is like looking for an elephant with wings. “It’s near impossible for any trek to compare with the Kashmir Great Lakes or the Tarsar Marsar. It is hard to match up to the grand meadows, the turquoise blue lakes and picture-perfect landscapes of these two treks,” says Sandhya UC, who led the exploration and documentation of the Kashmir Great Lakes (2011) and Tarsar Marsar (2015) treks.

The Warwan Valley trek is the most exquisite in our country. There is no trek you would have done before this one that can match the experience of this trek. And there will be no trek you do after this that comes close.

After all, Warwan Valley is exceptionally stunning – even for Kashmir. Even if you have travelled to Kashmir before and seen Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and other places the valley offers – you are still going to be bowled over by the settings of Warwan Valley. It is unique to the region.

The valley’s remoteness and isolation compound this beauty. This is a side of Kashmir that even most Kashmiris haven’t seen.

Other popular monsoon treks you should know about

There are certain treks that gained unprecedented popularity in the monsoon. You'll find them to be incredibly crowded during the monsoon season. But the crowd takes away from the experience of trekking in the remote Himalayas.

Yet, these are the treks you should know about. These are among some of the greatest trails in our country.

Kashmir Great Lakes

Difficulty : Moderate-Difficult, Level 2 | Duration : 7 days | Pick-up : Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir

5 monsoon treks

Usually, on a high altitude trek, it’s normal to see one alpine lake or perhaps two. But on the  Kashmir Great Lakes  trek, seven alpine lakes appear day after day, surprising you with their enormity and their unprecedented beauty every time! It is, hands down, the most beautiful trek of our country!

The best part is that every lake is unique and boasts of its own beauty. On the other hand, the landscape just after monsoon is spectacular, with lush meadows, and tiny flowers littered on the floor, so much so, that you’ll wonder where to step without trampling upon the flowers. The freshness of it can be overwhelming.

The eye-catching maple trees and plains of Satsar are special highlights of this trek, apart from the lakes themselves.

View Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

Tarsar Marsar Trek

Difficulty : Difficult, Level 3 | Duration : 8 days | Pick-up : Srinagar

5 monsoon treks

Tarsar Marsar is arguably the prettiest trek in India. This is a title we do not give treks lightly. Especially when its formidable sister trek,  Kashmir Great Lakes , is in the picture.

However, Tarsar Marsar is a trek where alpine lakes take a life of their own. It is not just the fact that you get to  camp beside these royal blue, snow-fed lakes  (you don’t get this camping chance even at KGL). Or the secluded nature of these campsites (a Godsend in today’s trekking scenario!).

The best aspect of this trek, however, is the variety. Every day is an independent trek, and you never know what to expect. One day you’ll see fresh water musically flowing down over ledges, and the next day, you’ll see enormous lakes amidst mountains decorated with patches of snow. Sheep graze peacefully and horses sprint about freely.

The land is every bit as picturesque as a paradise ought to be.

Hampta Pass Trek

Difficulty : Difficult, Level 3 | Duration : 8 days | Pick-up : Manali

5 monsoon treks

Simply put, the  Hampta Pass  is Himachal’s Valley of Flowers. The landscape is strikingly similar to that of Valley of Flowers – a green narrow valley protected by snow-covered mountains – but there’s an added bonus here.

When you get onto the other side of the Hampta Pass, you’ll be in awe looking at the stark contrast from what you just left behind. The landscape that stretches in front of you is Spiti Valley, known for its barren stretches, rugged terrain and forget-me-not blue skies.

The trek ends with a bang on the last day, with a drive to Chandrataal, a striking blue alpine lake in a stark desert. It is indeed a trek of contrasting surprises!

Valley of Flowers Trek

Difficulty : Moderate, Level 2 | Duration : 6 days | Pick-up : Rishikesh

5 monsoon treks

It’s no surprise that  Valley of Flowers  is one of the most sought-after monsoon treks in India. Week after week, gorgeous flowers of intoxicating scents sprout from the wet earth, covering the valley in a carpet of colours. One week, the flowers are pink, and the next, they’re yellow and later, red and so on.

To add to that, the setting is an absolute joy; snow-capped mountains rise on either side and puffy clouds cling onto the valley.

Finally, an international to do in monsoon

Kilimanjaro trek.

Difficulty : Difficult, Level 3 | Duration : 8 days | Pick-up : Moshi, Africa

Kilimanjaro really needs no introduction.

It has the distinction of being the highest peak in Africa and one of the  Seven Summits . It gives you the unique experience of standing on top of the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

The best part is that it is one of the few seven summits that does not require technical expertise. Naturally, it’s a trek that is on every serious trekker’s bucket list.

With that, we've come to the end of this list.

Trekking is rapidly evolving in our country. From having merely one option of a Himalayan trek in monsoon, now we have more than 10. The various landscapes of the Himalayas, tinged with lush greenery are now accessible in monsoon.

This is why it's a great time to trek. You have options to choose from different regions, difficulty levels and landscapes.

Having said that, I'd love to know your favourite monsoon trek from this list. And, which one would you like to go for next?

Why is trekking best during the monsoon in nepal.

Trekking during the monsoon season in Nepal, which spans from June to September, offers a unique and enriching experience distinct from any other time of the year. Despite the challenges posed by the rain, such as slippery trails and occasional visibility issues, the monsoon season brings out the vibrant best in Nepal's landscapes and provides trekkers with several compelling advantages:

Lush Landscapes:  The monsoon rains transform the countryside into a vivid display of greenery. Forests become denser, and valleys are carpeted in various shades of green, offering breathtaking views. This is the time when Nepal’s flora is at its most vibrant, with flowers blooming and rivers brimming with fresh water, creating spectacular waterfalls and streams along the trekking routes.

Fewer Crowds:  One of the significant benefits of trekking in Nepal during the monsoon is the fewer number of tourists on the trails. This provides a more peaceful and personal experience of the Himalayas, allowing trekkers to immerse themselves fully in the natural beauty and tranquility without the distraction of large crowds.

Unique Cultural Insights:  The monsoon is an important season for agriculture in Nepal, and trekking during this time offers a unique insight into the local way of life, as communities are busy with planting and other agricultural activities. Trekkers get the opportunity to see a different aspect of Nepalese culture and can interact more closely with the locals, who have more time to share their stories and traditions.

Rain Shadow Areas:  Certain regions in Nepal, such as Mustang or parts of Dolpo, lie in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, making them ideal for trekking during the monsoon. These areas receive significantly less rainfall, allowing for dry and pleasant trekking conditions while the rest of the country experiences monsoon showers.

Adventure and Challenge:  Trekking during the monsoon adds an element of adventure and challenge, appealing to those who seek a more demanding experience. Navigating wet trails and crossing swollen rivers can be rewarding, offering a sense of achievement and an adrenaline rush that is less likely to be found during the drier seasons.

Wildlife and Flora:  The monsoon season is a fantastic time for nature lovers, as the national parks and conservation areas are teeming with life. The lush vegetation supports a wide variety of wildlife, some of which are more visible during this season. Additionally, the forests are alive with the sounds of birds and insects, enhancing the trekking experience.

Better Prices:  With fewer tourists visiting during the monsoon, prices for accommodations, guides, and porters are often lower. This can make trekking more affordable, allowing for a longer or more luxurious trekking experience at a fraction of the cost.

While trekking in Nepal during the monsoon requires good preparation, such as waterproof gear and possibly more flexible travel plans, the rewards of witnessing the Himalayas in their monsoon-draped splendour, enjoying the solitude of the trails, and experiencing the warmth of Nepalese hospitality make it a uniquely rewarding adventure.

Phoksundo Lake Trek

The Phoksundo Lake Trek is one of Nepal's hidden gems, offering trekkers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and tranquility. Situated in the remote Dolpa district, this trek is a journey into one of the least accessible and yet profoundly beautiful regions of Nepal. Here's a closer look at what makes the Phoksundo Lake Trek a must-do for adventurers seeking to explore the road less traveled:

5 monsoon treks

Spectacular Natural Beauty : The trek to Phoksundo Lake unveils breathtaking landscapes, including deep pine forests, alpine meadows, and towering cliffs. The lake itself, with its deep blue and emerald colors, is a sight to behold, surrounded by steep snow-capped peaks.

Cultural Immersion : The Dolpa region is rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, offering trekkers the chance to explore ancient monasteries, chortens, and mani walls. The area is also home to the Bon Po religion, providing a unique insight into this pre-Buddhist faith that is still practiced in few Himalayan regions.

Biodiversity : The trek passes through Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal's largest national park, which is home to a wide array of flora and fauna. Trekkers might spot rare wildlife such as snow leopards, musk deer, and Himalayan blue sheep.

Remote and Pristine : Being one of the less travelled paths in Nepal, the Phoksundo Lake Trek offers a sense of solitude and unspoiled natural beauty. The lack of roads and the remote setting make for an authentic wilderness experience.

Rain Shadow Area : Located in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri range, the trek to Phoksundo Lake is feasible even during the monsoon season, as the area receives significantly less rainfall, making it an excellent choice for those looking to trek during this time.

Trekking Route and Difficulty

The trek usually starts from Juphal, which is reached by a flight from Nepalgunj. The route takes trekkers through traditional villages, across suspension bridges, and along scenic riverbanks. The trek can take around 7 to 10 days, depending on the itinerary and pace of the trekking group.

Trekkers can explore centuries-old monasteries (gompas) and learn about the local traditions and rituals that have been preserved over the centuries.

Remote and Pristine: Being one of the most isolated regions in Nepal, Dolpo offers a trekking experience that is both challenging and rewarding, with landscapes ranging from arid mountains to lush green valleys, virtually untouched by modernity.

High Passes and Adventurous Trekking: The trek involves crossing several high passes, including Numa La and Baga La, which offer stunning panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri massif and the barren landscapes of the Tibetan plateau.

Trekking Route and Difficulty:  The Lower Dolpo Trek typically begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by another flight to Juphal, the starting point of the trek. The route takes trekkers through terraced fields, traditional villages, and into the heart of the Shey Phoksundo National Park, before tackling the high passes that lead to the Phoksundo Lake and beyond. The trek can take around 18 to 21 days, depending on the chosen itinerary and pace.

Necessary gear and equipment

For a successful and safe trekking experience, especially in the challenging terrain of the Himalayas, having the right gear and equipment is crucial. Whether you're embarking on the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Annapurna Circuit, or any other high-altitude trek, being well-prepared will enhance your enjoyment and ensure your safety. Here is a comprehensive list of the necessary gear and equipment for Himalayan treks:

Base Layers: moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms for insulation.

Trekking shirts and pants: lightweight and breathable, preferably quick-drying.

Insulation Layer:  a fleece or wool sweater/jacket for additional warmth.

Outer Layer: waterproof and windproof jacket and pants for protection against rain and wind.

Down Jacket: For high-altitude treks where temperatures can drop significantly.

Undergarments: Enough for the duration of the trek, including sports bras for women.

Headgear: sun hat, beanie or wool hat for warmth, and a bandana or neck gaiter.

Handwear: lightweight gloves for warmth and waterproof gloves for higher altitudes or colder conditions.

Footwear: sturdy, waterproof trekking boots with good ankle support, and a few pairs of trekking socks (wool or wool-blend). Consider bringing sandals or sneakers for evenings in the teahouses.

Gear and Accessories

Backpack: a 50-65-litre backpack with a comfortable harness. A rain cover for the backpack is also essential.

Day Pack: For shorter excursions from base camps or teahouses, if your main luggage is carried by porters.

Sleeping Bag: A good quality, four-season sleeping bag. Many teahouses provide blankets, but a sleeping bag is necessary for hygiene and extra warmth.

Trekking Poles: To assist with balance and reduce strain on the knees, especially during descents.

Headlamp: With extra batteries, essential for early starts and navigating teahouses at night.

Sunglasses: high UV protection to safeguard against intense sun at high altitudes.

Sunscreen and Lip Balm: High SPF to protect against sunburn.

Water Bottles or Hydration System: With the capacity to carry at least 2 litres of water, water purification tablets, or a water filter.

First Aid Kit: Including medication for altitude sickness, painkillers, antiseptic cream, band-aids, and personal medications.

Personal hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, shampoo, and wet wipes. Female hygiene products as necessary.

Towel: quick-drying and lightweight.

Snacks and Nutritional Supplements: Energy bars, trail mix, and electrolyte supplements can be useful.

Camera and Power Bank: For capturing memories and charging electronic devices.

Maps and Guidebooks: For navigation and information on the areas you will be trekking through.

Miscellaneous Items: including a sewing kit, duct tape (for gear repairs), and plastic bags for wet clothes.

Optional Items

Book or e-reader: for leisure time.

Journal and Pen: For documenting the trek.

Playing cards or travel games: for entertainment in the evenings.

Remember, the key to packing for a trek is balance. You want to be prepared for all conditions without overburdening yourself with unnecessary weight. It's also a good idea to wear your trekking boots and use your backpack before the trek to ensure they are comfortable.

Permits and fees

When planning a trek in Nepal, it's essential to be aware of the permits and fees required for each region to ensure legal compliance and contribute to the conservation and community efforts. Here's a combined overview of the necessary permits and fees for some of Nepal's most popular trekking destinations:

Permits and Fees Overview

Sagarmatha National Park Permit : Necessary for the Everest Base Camp Trek, this permit supports conservation efforts in the Everest region.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee : Applicable for trekkers in the Everest (Khumbu) region, imposed by the local government.

TIMS Card : Required for treks in Annapurna and Langtang regions, and sometimes for Everest, to manage trekker information and ensure safety.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) : Required for the Annapurna Circuit Trek and any other treks within the Annapurna Conservation Area to fund conservation projects.

Langtang National Park Permit : Required for the Langtang Valley Trek, contributing to the conservation of wildlife and natural resources in Langtang National Park.

Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and Special Restricted Area Permit : Necessary for the Manaslu Circuit Trek due to its location in a conservation and restricted area.

Upper Mustang Special Restricted Area Permit : Required for the Upper Mustang Trek, with costs significantly higher due to the area's restricted status.

Costs : Permit costs vary by region. General conservation area and national park permits are around USD 30. TIMS cards are about USD 10-20. Restricted area permits, like for Manaslu or Upper Mustang, are more expensive, often exceeding USD 100, depending on the season and duration.

Where to Obtain and Documentation Needed

Obtaining Permits : Most permits can be acquired in Kathmandu or Pokhara at the respective conservation area or national park offices. TIMS cards are available at the Nepal Tourism Board offices. Restricted area permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency.

Documentation : Trekkers need to provide a copy of their passport, visa, and passport-sized photos for most permits. Restricted area permits require an application by a registered trekking agency on behalf of the trekker.

Always check the latest permit requirements and fees before your trip, as these can change.

Trekking with a reputable agency helps in smoothly obtaining all necessary permits and ensures adherence to local laws and conservation efforts.

The cost of permits contributes to conservation, maintenance of trekking routes, and support for local communities, enhancing the sustainability of trekking tourism in Nepal.

By understanding and preparing for these permit requirements and fees, trekkers can ensure a hassle-free and responsible trekking experience in Nepal's majestic Himalayas.

Top 5 Treks During Monsoon Season in Nepal

In light of Nepal's incomparable Himalayan excellence, it is an obligatory destination for incredible traveling experiences for people worldwide. While treks are possible throughout the year, autumn and spring are typically considered the best seasons for expeditions in the higher Himalayan regions. The spring and autumn seasons present vibrant sights of striking mountains and an ideal climate for trips. Other than that, winter and summer treks are also pleasing in Nepal. The spring season in Nepal endures from March to May, while autumn continues from September to November. Likewise, December to February marks the winter season in Nepal, and the highlands are likely to have pretty cold temperatures, making it uncomfortable for trekking. The summer and monsoon are contemporaneous seasons in Nepal that last almost from June to August and are known for frequent rainfall. This season isn't much proper for high-elevation treks, as obscured mountain views, messy trek routes, and flight delays are usual. Luckily, Nepal has many traveling destinations that are useful for monsoon trips too. Certain rain-shadowed regions in Nepal experience less rainfall during the monsoon, making them ideal decisions for the best monsoon season treks.

These rain-shadowed regions in Nepal have little precipitation because of their geographical barricade of mountain ranges. The Himalayan Peaks cause the common airstreams to lose their humidity on the windy side, making the shielded side dry. Hence, it makes these explicit destinations ideal for monsoon season trips.

Here are the Top 5 Treks During the Monsoon Season in Nepal .

Upper Mustang Trek – The Best Monsoon Trek

monsoon season treks

Upper Mustang Trek is ideal for Nepal's top monsoon/summer season treks. The region lies on the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Massifs' rain-shadowed part, which gets scarce rainfall in the monsoon. Due to its unique geography, Upper Mustang presents a divergent and novel climate contrasted to the rest of Nepal.

While most of Nepal's traveling destinations offer a rich ecosystem, Mustang displays corroded mounds and astonishing rock formations different from everything else in the country! The region is set on the edges of the Kali Gandaki, Gorge - perhaps the deepest gorge on earth. With a significant part of the region's territory being high plains, Mustang's landscapes have inadequate vegetation, snow with heavy winds, and unusual rock formations. Moreover, one of the features of this trip is getting to the Forbidden Kingdom of Lo Manthang, a remote territory where ethnic people practice the Tibetan culture in its best form.

Upper Dolpo Trek – Off-The-Beaten Path Trek

monsoon treks

An extensively cultural Tibetan site, Dolpo, lies in the Dolpa district of western Nepal. The sparse agro-pastoral region of Upper Dolpo is perfect for a remote trekking experience due to its splendid hiking landscapes and its estranged location. Dolpa - the biggest district of Nepal, covering about 5.36% land of the country. It is still basically lonely and enclosed in remoteness due to its geography. Yet being the most extended area, it is the least thickly populated district of the country. Subsequently, the lifestyle and tradition of the ethnic people of Dolpo have as yet persevered in their refined form.

Geographically, a part of the sedimentary Tibetan-Tethys Zone, Dolpo, is confined by the Himalayan ranges that comprise the mightiest peaks like Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna. Likewise, the Dolpo region also causes a cloud block and results semi-barren environment in the valley, making it a decent choice for monsoon treks in Nepal. There is very light rainfall in Dolpo, making landscapes that look like the Tibetan Plateau.

The Upper Dolpo Trek begins from Juphal and passes through various beautiful landscapes to explore the vast mountain ranges. Crossing Numa La Pass (5,190m), you will admire the spectacular Phoksundo Lake at Ringmo village inside Phoksundo National Park. Dolpo Trek usually involves entirely exposed summer meadows, rudimentary hills, and bunches of yak trains.

Annapurna Circuit Trek - Classic Trekking Trail

monsoon season treks

Annapurna Circuit Trek is a well-known classic trekking trail in Nepal. Many travelers pick this route for a stimulating and bold experience, as it is one of the best scenic treks in the world. The path offers the serenity of the Trans Himalayas, forbidden villages, and their cultures. Most of the trail region stays within the rain-shadowed part of the Himalayas, which assure lesser or no rainfall. Thus, it is a perfect trek to look for a pristine and venturesome trip during the monsoon season.

One who chooses this route should cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m), one of Nepal's most remarkable mountain passes. Likewise, the trail takes you toward Manang Valley, where you can meet the local people of Manang and learn about their tribe.

Annapurna Circuit Trek almost takes a minimum of 14 days to 19 days to complete. You can design your trip adding your interests and preferences. Since it is a very extensive and strenuous venture, having an earlier trek experience is beneficial.

Everest Base Camp Trek

ebc treks in monsoon season

Everest Base Camp Trek is on everyone's wish list because of its prominent delights. This trek is a classic trip in Nepal's Himalayas, allowing adventurers to get to know numerous world's most striking peaks and the local Sherpa people with the most records of summiting challenging mountains in the world.

The trip to EBC features hiking through the slopes of the Dudh Koshi River. Similarly, as you enter Sagarmatha National Park, the journey pursues the pine and hemlock woodlands. The monsoon season treks in Everest are less crowded, which allows you to admire the natural glory of the Himalayas. While there will be some rainfall at the trip's start, it will lessen as you climb to higher elevations that grant a perfect set of panorama. You can travel to this divine nature of the Himalayas at your preferred time in Nepal.

Regardless of what number of days you spend here, you will undoubtedly be honored by the tranquil magnificence of the Everest region.

Nar Phu Valley Trek

monsoon in nepal

Nar Phu Valley is the least explored Trans Himalayan region north of Annapurna. This journey through the Nar & Phu valleys entails the most remote villages, slender gorges, lush forests, high passes, glaciers, medieval Buddhist culture, and intriguing mountain views. The trek takes you to Kang La Pass's rough landscapes (5,306m), bestowing trekkers an astounding vista of the Annapurna Range.

This new off-the-beaten trekking trail goes through incredible remote villages like Manang, Nar, Phu, Meta, Koto, and a few more in the Annapurna region. This trip's most remarkable point is crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m), navigating through the steep, rugged edges. The top of Thorong La Pass proffers an undeniable 360-degree vista of snow-capped peaks in the Tibetan plateau.

Moreover, the area's untouched natural and cultural beauty shortly made explorers fall in love as it opened for trekkers. Nar Phu Valley Trek is the perfect monsoon trek as the region lies within the rain-shadow area, manipulating rare rainfall.

Five irresistible monsoon treks in karnataka to try in 2024.

  • January 2, 2024

There’s nothing ever soothing for the soul than getting an escape route to explore nature in thrilling treks, and what boosts one’s wanderlust, even more, is a Monsoon Trek! You heard it right. Climbing the heights amidst a rainy wet forest, enjoying its petrichor and beholding the gushing rivers is an unmatched experience that hikers and trekkers crave. We have got you covered here with the top 5 monsoon treks in Karnataka.

Even as this December greeted us with rains in many parts of South India, (snowfall would have been cuter), mayhap it rang a bell. Here are the top five monsoon trek spots in Karnataka that you can set out for in 2024.

1. Kodachadri

Situated in the Shimoga district and about 420 km away from India’s Silicon Valley, this spectacular location forms the heart of Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. With its picturesque villages and paddy fields, thick forest that is home to several endangered species, rolling green hills, stunning waterfalls and the mist, the Kodachadri trek will imprint an evergreen memory in your lifetime.

A monsoon trek destination with rich ancient history and stories, Kodachadri holds the famous temple built of stones at its peak where it is believed Goddess Mookambika slayed the demon Mookasura. The misty fog-clad temple is dedicated to the renowned philosopher and theologian Adi Shankaracharya who meditated at the peak back in 7 th AD.

kodachadri monsoon trek

One of the major attractions, the breathtaking Hidlumane waterfalls, forms out of seven falls of which the highest is the toughest to catch up with. One cannot resist plunging in and taking a dip in the chill water of the cascade. The dense Shola forests of the Western Ghats, with their canopy, and rich flora and fauna to explore, are a paradise equally for beginners or expert trekkers and nature lovers.

At an elevation of about 1343 m from sea level, the Kodachadri peak also offers you a glimpse of the Western coast in the non-monsoon times. In an approximately five-hour long trek, one may go solo to get immersed in nature’s serenity or hire a jeep ride with friends and family to ascend the muddy trails to behold nature’s beauty that the clouds embrace from the top.

2. Kudremukha

Reckoned among the tough and thrilling treks in Karnataka, Kudremukh is rich with its dense tropical forests , lush green meadows, rippling brooks, and plantations of pepper and coffee. Situated in Chikkamagaluru district, it is part of the Kudremukh National Park, the second-largest protected wildlife zone in the Western Ghats. The peak in a peculiar shape when viewed from the side is named Kudremukh which means horse’s face in Kannada.

At a height of 1,894 m above sea level, it is counted as the second highest peak in Karnataka following Mullayyangiri. Commence your one-hour trek from the forest office to find the horse’s face side view of the peak, and it may trick you into assuming it is quite easy close to climb, but no! You have another exciting three hours to ascend that peak point.

kudremukh monsoon trek

The beauty of the trek lies in the fact that you will traverse the splendid Shola forests in order to reach the peak. Shola (Solai in Tamil) is the local name for South India’s tropical montane forests situated amidst the rolling green meadows. A bonanza for the shutterbugs, as they may be lucky to spot a variety of flora and fauna including deer, peacock, lion-tailed macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, common langur, leopard, and more.

You will also be fascinated by bubbling streams and waterfalls as you cross the forest, but do watch out for leeches. What greets you as you step out of the forest is a magnificent view of the green rolling hills all around you. Covered by mist and clouds time and again, they literally play hide and seek with your eyes!

3. Bandaje Falls

Bandaje trek is an exciting combo of two treks – Ballalarayana Durga and Bandaje falls , a fact not known to many. About 280 kilometres from Bengaluru, Ballalarayana Durga is situated in Chikkamagaluru district. Bandaje falls is also known as Bandaje Arbi, the word “Arbi” means waterfall in the local language.

The waterfall that drops from about 200 feet is formed by the tributaries of the Nethravathi river and is still an unexplored paradiswith e in a remote spot in the Western Ghats. Ballalarayana Durga remains the perfect monsoon trek with its breathtaking view, long stretches of green meadows, thick shola forests and torrential rains.

bandaje falls trek

The forest is rich with old trees and a variety of birds. The peak holds a dilapidated fort that dates back to the 17 th century. The trekking typically begins from Mundaje, and leads to the Bandaje Arbi before culminating at the abandoned fort, wherein the last part is challenging for the trekkers.

4. Tadiandamol

The highest peak of Coorg, and the third-highest in Karnataka, Tadiandamol showcases a marvellous view of greenery , coffee plantations and a lingering aroma of coffee all around. Trekking often begins from the Nalaknad Palace, traversing the Chelavara Falls and the Padi Iggutthappa temple. The monsoon adds to its beauty with a spread of colourful blooms along the trail.

As you climb to the peak, which is at an elevation of about 5,735 feet, it gives a splendid view of the emerald carpet of grasslands and green hills stretching in all directions of the peak. Monsoon trek lets you see the cloud embrace the hill and valleys teasing and entertaining your eyes.

tadiandamol monsoon trek

While the evergreen shola forests decorate the valleys, one gets to spot other tree types including nutmeg trees, Betel nut trees, fishtail palms and more. The forest is also home to a variety of species in the animal kingdom including Calotes Versicolor lizards, millipedes, butterflies etc.

5. Nishani Motte

Part of the Tala Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, Nishani Motte is part of the Bhagamandala range of the Coorg district and is home to a versatile species of plant and animal species. The key attraction of the trek, which sets out through the pristine shola forest and green meadows on the trail, is the thrilling ridge walk towards the summit and it offers a magnificent view amidst the cloud-clad valley.

The trek of about 15km is often guided by guides authorized by the forest department and they have the know-how of animal movement in order to take you through safely. You may watch out for elephants or leopards or their hoofprints. The trekking trail also offers a view of stretches of paddy fields, cardamom and coffee plantations as well as religious sites en route Nishani Motte.

nishani motte

The summit offers an exceptional view of the landscape with the Cauvery meandering across it, the ranges of Brahmagiri hills and the Kerala forest and a 360-degree panoramic view of the valley from a height embraces by the clouds.

Monsoon is a time that invites versatile ideas to pamper one’s soul be it a panchakarma treatment, rappelling in a nearby stream, a rain-drenched football or a simple cup of tea over hot pakoras. However, you can think out-of-the-box in 2024 to block a few calendar days to go trekking at the above five best monsoon trek destinations in Karnataka. As your spirit soaks in the rhythm of the rain, an exhilarating trek to climb these heights exploring nature and wildlife will leave you entranced!

In Nepal , monsoon season starts from around mid-June, July, August, and early September. During this time, roads are muddy due to rain. Expect rain for a short period; two to three hours and later the view is crystal clear.

Most of the best treks in Nepal are in the rain shadow area which has low rain and humidity. Even during monsoon, you can trek to Everest Base Camp due to a higher altitude (above 2500m) which helps to overcome the problem of the rainy season.

Missing California Hiker Found Dead at Base of Waterfall 5 Days After Going Missing

Caroline Meister, 30, was discovered after an extensive search and rescue operation

5 monsoon treks

A woman who went missing during a hike in Northern California has been found dead at the base of a waterfall.

The body of Caroline Meister, 30, was discovered on Friday by a search and rescue team, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release . No signs of foul play are suspected.

Meister was found during an extensive search operation after being reported missing on March 18 when she didn’t return from her hike.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said that “search and rescue personnel were performing a high angle search off of the [Tassajara] 'Cut-Off' trail where a waterfall drops off of the trail," when they found her.

"Search and rescue personnel rappelled down the steep drop-off and located Caroline Meister’s body at the base of the waterfall," he added about the 150-foot drop.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office

Nieto added in a news conference on Friday that the death was deemed “accidental” and that Meister's injuries were “consistent with falling down a cliff.”

Deputy Carlos Pina also explained that the search and rescue team was able to determine Meister’s probable location after local residents reported that “she had made a comment of the horse pasture trail” prior to heading off on her hike.

The coroner is now set to determine the official cause of death.

On March 18, Meister departed for a hike at around 10 a.m. from Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in Carmel Valley.

She had reportedly shared her plans to take a trail that looped back to the Zen Center and hike the “Windcave Trail,” authorities shared on Facebook , adding, “She was only carrying snacks for the day and was not dressed or equipped for an overnight stay.”

Meister worked at the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in Ventura Wilderness along the Central Coast of California where she also lived, CBS News reported.

She left for her hike last week wearing teal boots and carrying a blue bag.

"She's very familiar with the area, she's also an avid hiker," her father told local news station KSBW prior to her being found last week.

Director of the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, Heather Ianrusso told CBS News, "Many of us have lived here for a while, and we're familiar with these trials. She was not out there doing anything risky."

Speaking of Meister, she added, "She's just a lovely human being, and we all — we already miss her deeply. She was an amazingly sweet, bright spirit – very gentle and kind and helpful."

Hopefully, it’s all the things that Discovery has always been. Action, adventure, heart, family, love, sci-fi wonderfulness, beautifully acted, beautifully directed, production values, gorgeous VFX. It’s everything we have always had in Discovery in one episode.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Everything We Know

Why star trek: discovery season 5 is different from previous seasons, adventure is the name of the game in discovery season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery has always centered around threats to the United Federation of Planets and the galaxy at large, but Discovery season 5 goes in a different direction. Captain Burnham's chase for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy" is a shift in tone to more adventure as opposed to the dire menaces that the USS Discovery has faced down in the past. An intergalactic treasure hunt means Burnham and her Crossfield Class starship can visit more strange new worlds to find the clues that lead to the treasure.

Although not originally planned to be the final season, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also about endings.

This isn't to say Captain Burnham's treasure hunt won't be dangerous. The treasure is an ancient power source that could be deadly if it falls in the wrong hands , and some of the 32nd century's most fearsome powers want the prize, including Discovery season 5's new villains L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow). Although not originally planned to be the final season, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also about endings. Thus, season 5 turned out to be the ideal last chapter of Discovery , and fans now have some more clues to connect the dots about Star Trek: Discovery season 5's mysteries.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres April 4 on Paramount+
