'Confused by what they saw:' MB Safari owner says monkey that bit woman was not theirs

by Julia Varnier

(Nick Papantonis/WPDE)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — Doc Antle, founder and director of TIGERS Myrtle Beach Safari, issued the following statement after a woman reportedly came in contact with a small monkey in Myrtle Beach.

This is a strange story. However, for years, we have all read and heard accounts of animals on the loose. Perhaps people were confused by what they saw, but we really have no explanation. All of our animals are accounted for here at the preserve.
There’s certainly a lot of speculation about the situation. And, it concerns us, too. But, I can tell you with certainty that this animal wasn’t one of ours.
With Myrtle Beach moving into a COVID-recovery, the area is seeing a huge surge of tourists visiting our area. We don’t have the answer but are very glad that the Myrtle Beach resident is safe and doing well.

Horry County Police responded to reports of an animal attack on Wednesday at 5 Keystone Lane near Myrtle Beach, according to an incident report.

When the responding officer arrived and spoke with the victim, the victim said at the time that the monkey could still possibly be on the loose.

Though Doc Antle's response states the monkey was not one of theirs, police reports state that the officer responded to the animal facility down the street and "spoke with the owner of the TIGERS preserve", who then met with the officer and Fire Battalion Chief outside of their gates.

TRENDING: 'I don't think I'll ever be the same:' SC man recovering from lung transplant due to COVID

According to the report, the owner said that the monkey did get loose and wandered into the next neighborhood, but was recovered and placed back into a cage. He added that particular monkey does wander free within the facility and does get loose from time to time, the report said.

The responding officer went back to the address of the incident and the victim said when she heard her dog barking outside she went to see why and saw the small-sized monkey in her yard, according to the report. The incident furthered that the monkey lunged at her and bit her on the arm. She said that once the monkey bit her, it reportedly lunged towards her chest, and then it fled the area.

The report said the officer did notice bite marks on the victim's left arm. The victim was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.

Susan Phillips who handles media inquiries for Myrtle Beach Safari stated the following when asked if Antle was recanting his statement to police.

Mr. Antle is not recanting his statement to police. When authorities first contacted him about a monkey being loose in the community, Mr. Antle responded that he couldn’t rule out anything until he went to the enclosures and accounted for all animals. Once he had an opportunity to go to the enclosures and contact all the trainers, he could say with certainty at that point that all animals were accounted for.

The Dept. of Health and Environmental Control was contacted by Horry County Animal Control about the incident and they told ABC15 "DHEC receives notification when people and/or pets are involved in an incident with an animal, and DHEC’s role in animal incident investigations is to determine if exposure to rabies is a factor."
