  • Things To Do

Maine Wineries

The phrase “wine country” may not prompt you to think of the rocky coast of Maine. But a growing number of winemakers have realized that the state’s moderate ocean climate makes for happy grapevines. So like the rest of Maine’s culinary scene, the last twenty years have seen an explosion in wine production. After all, gourmands need something to pair with all that delicious seafood and wild game.

Many Maine vineyards are growing cold-hardy hybrid varietals bred for cooler climates —including Frontenac blanc, Frontenac gris, Marquette and L'acadie blanc — joining the sweet blueberry, blackberry, pear and apple wines that were the staples of Maine’s wine scene for many years.

Wineries in Maine are unique. Our wines are as varied as the people who create them, but they all reflect the special terroir of Maine, whether you’re visiting the coast, the lakes region or the highlands. When wine tasting in Maine, you don't have to be an expert to enjoy wine--you just need to trust your own taste. You’re bound to find one you like along the Maine Wine Trail , a collection of over two dozen wineries, tasting rooms, vineyards and orchards.

In Dexter, you can visit the tasting room to sample the wide variety and enjoy a tour at Anthony Lee’s Winery . Enjoy honey wine, or mead, from The Fat Friar’s Meadery in Newcastle, with meads ranging from sour to light summery ones. The Kennebec Valley has many wineries, like Willows Awake in Leeds, where their vines and locally sourced fruit provide the foundation for estate-grown wines. At The Vista of Maine , Ricker Hill hard ciders and wines are served in a historic barn with an incredible view of mountains.

In the MidCoast region you can find Cellardoor Winery – less than 10 miles away from Camden – has a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and a beautiful vineyard. Sweetgrass Winery and Distillery is a family-run business offering a variety of wines and spirits. If you’re looking for a winery open during the chillier months, you’ll be happy to note that Sweetgrass is open through New Year’s Eve! Winterport Winery has a variety of award-winning fruit wines from blueberry to pear.

Wine tasting in Maine can be a choose-your-own adventure. Taste a variety of wines, meads, ciders and spirits along the Trail, or at a Maine Winery Guild event, like the Maine Open Winery Day. No matter when you visit, you’ll find unique Maine vintages in specialty stores and markets throughout the state.

Terroir: “the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate.”

Not long ago this word epitomized why Maine didn’t produce wine made from grapes grown in the state.  The climate was believed too harsh and the growing season too short for grapes to thrive.  Today, “terroir” is a word Maine winemakers can speak proudly. Through trial and error and loads of research, winemakers have discovered grapes suitable for Maine. Many of the grape varietals grown in the state are hybrids, carefully selected for their ability to thrive in harsh climates.  Certain varieties can withstand temperatures down to 40 below zero. From Chardonnays to Merlots, the state’s winemakers are tirelessly honing their craft to produce unique and exceptional wines. And the industry is growing, with over 20 wineries in the state and counting.

So hit the Maine Wine Trail and stop by any number of the state’s wineries for samples, food pairing events, tours, and bottles for purchase. Check out the Maine Winery Guild’s website mainewineryguild.com for a complete list of wineries in Maine. Salute!

Whether you are looking for a winery concert or a wedding venue, Maine wineries offer a unique and memorable experience.

Pairing Wine with Local Cuisine

Maine is famous for its seafood, and it’s no surprise that wine is a popular accompaniment to many local dishes. With so many wineries in Maine, it’s easy to find the perfect bottle to complement your meal.

Seafood lovers will find plenty of options for pairing wine with their favorite dishes. For example, a crisp, dry white wine like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with lobster or shrimp. A Chardonnay or Viognier can also be a good choice for richer seafood dishes like scallops or crab cakes.

If you prefer red wine, try a light-bodied Pinot Noir with grilled fish or a heavier Merlot with a seafood stew or chowder. A Cabernet Franc can also be a good choice for heartier seafood dishes.

Many Maine restaurants feature locally sourced ingredients, and wine can be a great way to complement these fresh flavors. A light, fruity rosé pairs well with a salad of local greens, while a medium-bodied red like a Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah can be a good choice for a hearty dish featuring locally raised beef or pork.

In addition to seafood and locally sourced ingredients, Maine is also known for its blueberries. A sweet, fruity dessert wine like a late-harvest Riesling or a Port can be a great way to finish off a meal featuring this local favorite.

Overall, there are plenty of options for pairing wine with local cuisine in Maine. Whether you prefer white or red, seafood or meat, there’s a perfect bottle waiting to be uncorked.

The 10 Best Wineries In Maine

Home to delicious lobsters, stunning views across the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, and beautiful lighthouses sprawled across the shores, Maine adds a certain nautical charm to the United States.

Not only are the fishermen hard at work, but the farmers are, as well. Maine produces 99% of all blueberries in the country, making it the single largest producer in the U.S.!

scenic Maine shoreline with lighthouse

At one point, wines in Maine were only produced from fruit, such as blackberries, pears, apples, (and obviously blueberries). With time and hard determination to create quality wines, Maine is now proudly growing grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Shiraz, to name a few.

With over 20 operating wineries in the state, the wine scene continues to steadily grow, as well as the wine and food festivals.

The friendly, seaside community is always more than welcoming to visitors looking to take a trip down the wine trail, even offering prizes if you use the Maine Wine Trail Passport given by the Maine Winery Guild ! Pick yours up at one of the local wineries while you sip, taste, and experience all that this gem of a state has to offer.

What Is Mead?

Mead is a unique alcoholic beverage with a long and interesting history. It’s made by fermenting honey and water , which can also include other ingredients such as fruits, spices, herbs, grains, or hops to give it flavor.

The fermentation process creates ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide gas which gives mead its signature crisp taste . The alcohol content of mead can range from as low as three percent up to a whopping twenty-five percent.

Mead has been around for thousands of years , and it’s believed to be one of the oldest alcoholic beverages ever created . It was often served during royal festivities in ancient times, and its popularity spread through Europe with time.

Its popularity in the United States began to rise during the 19th century, when German and Scandinavian immigrants introduced it to their new homeland.

Mead is usually served chilled and can be enjoyed as an aperitif or even after dinner. Since mead has so many different flavor components, its taste can range from sweet and fruity to dry and earthy.
