BD Birla, along with his son Jugal Kishore Birla started the construction of the temple in the year 1933. The foundation stone of this popular temple was laid by Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh. Pandit Vishwanath Shastri was the guide throughout the making of the temple.

Once the construction was completed, the concluding ceremony and Yagna was performed by Swami Keshav Nandji. Mahatma Gandhi is accredited to have inaugurated the temple with a unique condition that entry in the temple will not be defined by the caste of the devotees. He emphasised that devotees of all castes should be allowed to pray in the temple, whether he is a brahmin or a shudra.

Architecture of Laxminarayan Temple/Birla Mandir, Delhi

The Laxminarayan Temple is not just a place of religious importance but also an exquisite piece of architecture. The designer of the temple, Sris Chandra Chaterjee, was one of the prominent leaders of the Modern Indian Architecture Movement. It was a very interesting time in the country. The country was witnessing the Swadeshi movement at large.

The architecture of Birla Temple speaks volumes of the times it was constructed in. The Swadeshi movement of early twentieth century is quite visible in the architecture of the temple. A whole lot of canonical texts have been used in the monument throughout. Chaterjee was a man known for his modern mindset. The Birla temple is a three-storeyed building and is built in the Nagara style of temple architecture. Scenes from the golden yuga of the present universal cycle can be seen carved around the temple walls. Hundreds of artisans from Benaras had put together their craft to carve the icons around the temple, under the able leadership of Acharya Vishwanath Shastri. The icons are made up of marbel stone, sourced from Jaipur.

The temple also has work of Kota stone that was brought from various places like Makarana, Agra, Jaisalmer, and Kota. One of the biggest highlights of the temple is its Shikara, that is above the sanctum sanctorum. It is about 160 feet high. The temple is east facing and looks amazingly beautiful during the sunrise. It is situated on a high plinth and is adorned by some fresco paintings as well.

The Geeta Bhavan situated towards the north of the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. There are also side temples with the main temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, Buddha and Krishna. The magnificent Birla Temple, also known as the Birla Mandir Delhi, was built by the renowned Birla family. The construction of this splendid temple began in 1933, undertaken by BD Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla. Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh laid the foundation stone of this temple and Pandit Vishwanath Shastri provided guidance throughout the temple’s creation.

After the completion of construction, the consecration ceremony and Yagna were performed under the guidance of Swami Keshav Nandji. It was Inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi but on a unique condition. He emphasised that the temple should be open to devotees of all castes, irrespective of whether they were Brahmins or Shudras. Gandhi believed in the equality of all individuals and advocated for inclusivity and unity in religious spaces.

The Birla Temple stands as a symbol of the Birla family’s commitment to spirituality and their vision of a temple that transcends caste barriers. It serves as a testament to their dedication in promoting harmony and acceptance among people of different backgrounds. Today, the temple continues to welcome devotees from all walks of life, offering them a place to pray and find solace in its serene surroundings.

Architecture Of Birla Mandir Delhi

The Birla Mandir Delhi was designed by Sris Chandra Chatterjee who is a prominent figure in the “Modern Indian Architecture Movement.” The architectural style of the temple draws inspiration from the principles of the Swadeshi Movement of the early 20th century, as well as from canonical texts. Despite embracing new ideas and technologies in construction, the movement did not neglect its roots. Chatterjee skillfully incorporated modern materials into his architectural creations.

The three story temple follows the Nagara Style of temple architecutre which are commonly found in Northern India. Elaborate Carvings adorn the entire temple, depicting scenes from the golden age of the present cosmic cycle. Over a hundred of skilled artisans from Benares which are led by Acharya Vishvanath Shastri meticulously carved the temple’s icons. The main Shikhra, rising above Sanctum sanctorum reaches an impressive height of approximately 49 metres (160 feet). The temple is oriented towards the east and stands on a raised platform. Inside the Shrine, Fresco painting depicts the life and work of Shastri.

The Icons within the temple are made of marble which are sourced from Jaipur, while Kota stone from Makrana, Agra, Kota and Jaisalmer was used for the temple’s construction. Adjacent to the temple, the Geeta Bhawan is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple complex features artificial landscapes and cascading waterfalls, enhancing its overall beauty and tranquility.

Rising gracefully from lush gardens and surrounded by a symmetrical charbagh (four-part garden), Humayun's Tomb exudes an air of tranquility and grandeur. The use of red sandstone and white marble in its construction adds a captivating contrast to the monument's façade, making it a visual delight for visitors and photographers alike.Interestingly, Humayun's Tomb served as an architectural inspiration for the world-famous Taj Mahal, which was built later by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife. The intricate geometric patterns, arched entrances, and delicate lattice work seen in Humayun's Tomb can be traced in the design of the Taj Mahal.Today, the tomb complex houses the graves of several other members of the Mughal dynasty, making it a cherished historical site and a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, marvel at the detailed calligraphy adorning the walls, and immerse themselves in the captivating history that surrounds this majestic monument.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

Home to the President of the world’s largest democracy, Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi stands as a symbol of national strength. The nation’s most important democratic functions like the swearing-in ceremony of its elected leaders are carried out in these very grounds. The Rashtrapati Bhavan has been witness to honour giving ceremonies of the country’s bravehearts and achievers, signing of historic pacts between India and other nations, of India’s independence and republic day ceremonies, and the hosting of many world leaders. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is a true architectural masterpiece in its own right. The magnificent building spreads across 320 acres, including the splendid ‘Mughal Garden’ and the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum. The design of the Rashtrapati Bhavan mainly imparts the Mughal architectural styles blended with classical and grand European signatures, credited to the British architects- Edwin Lutyen and Hebert Baker. The building is also diversified with a number of other typically Indian motifs such as ornate Elephant statues on the outer wall or the main gate of the building with the ‘Jaipur column’. All in all, it is quite a visual treat to behold! The building is open to visitors by three different segments or tour circuits. The first circuit comprises of the Main building and the Central Lawn. The second circuit houses the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum Complex. In the same circuit, you can get a tour of the Clock Tower, the Stables, and the Garages. The third circuit has the magnificent Mughal Garden and other ancillary gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Tourists can request a trip of each of the circuits separately on the days assigned for each segment respectively for daytime visits from 9 AM to 4 PM. There is much to take in and marvel at around the complex-- the intricate craftsmanship of carved marble statues, the sprawling Mughal Gardens featuring masterful landscaping concepts, the Clock Tower, and a myriad of presidential mementos preserved inside the Museum. Upon exit, you can explore the premier surroundings of this important historical site, often called as the ‘Lutyens Delhi’.
