THE FORBIDDEN VANCOUVER WALKING TOUR

Prohibition | rum-running | riots | gastown recommended: grade 7 – university.

On the Forbidden Vancouver Tour you’ll explore Gastown, our city’s oldest neighbourhood. In the late 1910s our Province experimented with prohibition, meaning the sale of alcohol was banned. Enterprising criminals began to make money “bootlegging,” making and selling liquor illegally to a thirsty population. Even some government officials couldn’t resist the temptation to make a quick buck trafficking liquor.

As illegal drinking dens started to pop up throughout the city, the VPD formed a “Dry Squad” to hunt down bootleggers. Eventually mob boss Joe Celona had risen to the top of the city’s underworld, with even the Chief of Police on his payroll. Fighting for prohibition were the temperance union, a patchwork social movement formed by religious leaders, suffragists who wanted the vote for women, business owners, and many in the general population worried about the huge extent of alcohol abuse in Canada in the years leading up to prohibition, and particularly in Vancouver.

Many people of colour and particularly indigenous communities were brutally targeted under prohibition law, which was used by authorities to exert control over marginalized people. While prohibition was eventually repealed, it sadly remained in place for decades in the case of indigenous people.

Once prohibition came into force south of the border, enterprising sailors made a fortune smuggling liquor down the West Coast in a practice known as “rum-running.” Vancouver’s Reifel family ran the largest rum running operation and would end up one of the country’s richest families. The Canadian government was even in on the act, charging an “export duty” on every case of liquor that left the country.

THE HIDDEN HISTORY & SWEET TREATS TOUR

Iconic buildings | corruption | gourmet delicacies recommended: grade 5 – university.

On the Hidden History & Sweet Treats Tour , you’ll discover the sensational stories behind our city’s most iconic places, including Granville Street’s Theatre Row, the Hotel Vancouver, Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Deco masterpiece the Marine Building, and much more.

Uncover the story of the crooked police chief and his fondness for paper bags stuffed full of dirty gambling cash. At his trial the “mysterious woman in the veil” gave evidence and caused uproar across the city, but what did she say? You’ll hear the story of vaudeville dancehall star Marie Lloyd, who sent audiences into meltdown with her outrageous act at the old Orpheum Theatre.

At the Vancouver Art Gallery, once the city’s courthouse, you’ll hear a tale of revenge and murder. On Granville Street you’ll discover what the street looked like back when it was Theatre Row, and tens of thousands of people would flock there every weekend to catch the latest flick on the silver screen. You’ll discover actor and star Yvonne De Carlo, who was born right on Burrard Street at St. Paul’s Hospital and went on to take Hollywood by storm.

Indulge in decadent treats along the way, including French delicacy kouign amann from Beaucoup Bakery, a delicious gourmet macaron, and the award-winning Mermaid’s Choice Chocolate Bar by Mink.

This walking tour even takes you inside some of the city’s most famous heritage buildings, like the Hotel Vancouver and the Marine Building. It’s your chance to see downtown Vancouver in an entirely different light.

THE DARK SECRETS OF STANLEY PARK WALKING TOUR

Historic totem poles | notorious crimes | deadman’s island recommended: grade 5 – university.

On the  Dark Secrets of Stanley Park Tour you’ll discover the park you thought you knew has a remarkable – and oftentimes shocking – history.

Stanley Park is not an untouched rainforest. It was home to local Coast Salish people for thousands of years before it became a park, and even for decades afterwards. Numerous villages dotted the shoreline, including Whoi Whoi, which hosted large potlaches and from where a delegation sailed to meet Captain George Vancouver as he explored the area in 1792.

The story of the forced eviction of indigenous people from the land that would become Stanley Park is a shocking background to the park’s creation. Some mixed race indigenous and European families were able to fight back against the City’s onslaught of lawsuits, and keep their homes in the park near Brockton Point until the 1950s. Today their memory and resilience is honoured by the statue Shore to Shore, by Salish artist Luke Marston, which we visit on the tour.

The creation of the park was also about more than creating a space for Vancouverites to enjoy afternoon strolls and picnics. The land was originally intended as a military reserve, established to protect the city should the Americans decide to invade. After it became clear that wouldn’t happen, real estate developers, the Canadian Pacific Railway, the City of Vancouver, and the Federal Government all battled for control of the land. The fact it became a park illustrates the colossal power the CPR once had in Vancouver.

Throw into the mix the tale of Deadman’s Island, stories of true crime, smallpox pest houses, buried treasure, public art, crow shoots and poetry and you’ll find that despite its beauty, there’s a lot more to Stanley Park than meets the eye!

THE REALLY GAY HISTORY WALKING TOUR

Lgbtq2+ pioneers | drag queens & kings | bookstore bombs recommended: social justice, gender studies, student & gsa groups.

On the  Really Gay History Tour you’ll walk the city’s bustling West End with storyteller and tour creator Glenn Tkach as your guide.

Vancouver’s Davie Street is home to one of North America’s most vibrant gay villages. The city’s annual PRIDE parade draws crowds in the tens of thousands. Our city has openly gay politicians and monuments to gay activists. But it wasn’t always this way…

Before decriminalization queer people lived in fear of being “outed” and risked losing their jobs, families, and even freedom. Canada routinely imprisoned people for homosexuality. Many of the leaders in the struggle for queer liberation in Canada were from here in Vancouver. People like ted northe, who had the bravery to campaign for queer rights back in the 1950s.

Vancouver has played a larger-than-life role internationally in the struggle for equality. We had the world’s first openly gay church minister, St Paul’s hospital opened one of the first dedicated care units during the AIDS crisis, and we had Canada’s first chapter of the Imperial Court System. We also had bookstore bombings, some of the country’s first PRIDE marches, and a transgender campaigner who blew the whistle on the biggest crime in the city’s history.

Glenn Tkach is available for private tours at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. most days of the week. Please inquire to confirm his availability.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A FORBIDDEN VANCOUVER PRIVATE TOUR

This shared experience will ignite conversation to improve relationships.

This isn’t a history lesson, it’s storytelling. Expect to laugh, learn, and be entertained.

Engage your students’ empathy and cooperation with real stories of Vancouver’s past heroes and villains.

Our tours are a low-barrier activity for those who may be shy to participate, and those more engaged can ask questions.

*Tours are wheelchair accessible (with the exception of the Dark Secrets of Stanley Park) and are held at your group’s pace.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do we need to bring.

For the summer months we recommend a sun-hat, sunscreen, sun-glasses, and a bottle of water. For the cooler months, we recommend a rain jacket and sturdy footwear. Don’t forget to charge up your smart phones to capture memories along the way!

How long is the walking tour?

That depends on which walking tour you choose, but generally speaking between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. We can stage a custom 1 hour version of our Monumental Scandals Tour if you’re under a time crunch!

Can we add or remove students last minute?

You can add students up to the time of your tour by emailing us at [email protected] . As long as we can fit them in then it’s no problem!

If your guests numbers fall, we can offer a refund up to 24 hours before your scheduled start time. Bear in mind we require a minimum of 20 students to receive the discounted student rate of $19, or equivalent cost.

Are your walking tours wheelchair accessible?

Every one of our private walking tours is wheelchair accessible except for the Dark Secrets of Stanley Park Tour. That experience includes trails and steps, so can’t accommodate wheelchairs unfortunately.

Can we take the Lost Souls of Gastown Tour as a school trip?

We typically recommend one of our other walking tours for school groups. We’ve found one of the features of school group tours is you can get into some really interesting conversations with your guide about Vancouver and its history. On the Lost Souls of Gastown Tour – which is a roving one-person play with your guide in character – it’s not possible to interact with the guide, or each other, in the same way.

Does my group need to tip the guide?

Your group doesn’t need to tip your guide on the day. The advertised cost includes an automatic gratuity for your guide.

Can we finish at a restaurant or specific location?

Our walking tours finish near to some of the city’s most loved entertainment districts, like Gastown, the Davie Street Village, or Granville Street. These neighbourhoods are packed with places to check out and refuel after your tour. If you’re looking for recommendations, please drop us an email at [email protected] .

How much walking is involved?

Each of our walking tours is between around 1.5 km and 2 km in length. They stay largely on flat, even ground and your guide will walk at an easy pace. However, each member of your group does need to be comfortable on their feet or wheelchair for up to around 2 hours.

What if it rains?

Our tours operate rain or shine. We suggest dressing warmly in case of any inclement weather, as these tours run outside for up to 2 hours. If needed, you can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before the tour starts and we’ll issue you a refund or credit to use on a future date that never expires. Please keep in mind, we’ll reach out in the event of severe weather advisories.

Does the Dark Secrets of Stanley Park Tour have Indigenous content?

Yes, this walking tour covers the impacts of colonialism on the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-waututh communities who lived in the park. This includes the forced eviction of families from their homes, the abduction of children from the park who were sent to residential schools, and efforts to erase local indigenous culture from the area.

For an Indigenous-led experience in Stanley Park, we recommend checking out Talaysay Tours.

Is there a restroom nearby that students can use before the tour starts?

Please aim to arrive early if you are coming from out of town and you anticipate your class might need a break before starting their tour.

The Forbidden Vancouver Tour: public bathrooms are available at the Harbour Centre, one block from the tour start point. There isn’t an official bathroom break on the tour itself, but if a guest needs to visit the bathroom during the tour, let your guide know and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes to duck into.

The Dark Secrets of Stanley Park Tour: the tour begins outside the Vancouver Aquarium which has a bathroom at their outdoor cafe, although it’s only open in the Spring and Summer seasons. Otherwise, we stop halfway through the tour by the Totem Poles at Brockton point, where there is a bathroom.

The Really Gay History Tour: the tour departs from outside the Robert Lee YMCA building, that has a bathroom available.

The Monumental Scandals Tour: the tour stops around the halfway point at the Hotel Vancouver, where there is a bathroom available.

Can you lead the tour in French?

We currently do not have any French-speaking guides on our team, but we’d still love to have you join us! All of our tours are conducted in English.

Can I add more students on the day of the tour and pay in cash?

Our guides are unable to accept cash or process payments. All payments are handled by our Operations team.

However, don’t worry, we’re happy to help! If you’re uncertain about the number of students, we can charge a deposit amount to secure your place and connect with you after your tour to settle any outstanding payments.

A Walk on the Wild Seed

What's the story of the plants we eat? Students will explore the journey of a vegetable from seed to plate, studying the seeds of plants grown on the farm, learning about their unique differences. Through a guided tour, students will see plants in different stages of their reproduction and their life cycle, relating this knowledge to our choices about what we eat in which season, and why that may be. As always, there's a chance for hands to get dirty after touring our farm, where we experiment with seed saving and understanding local adaptations. Students will harvest or plant seeds either at the farm, or to take home and plant in their own gardens or patios.

A Year at Cloverdale Elementary - Edukit

Students follow the lives of three children that attended Cloverdale Elementary for a whole school year (1910-1911). Rough, smooth, stinky, dark green, pointy. As they explore the garden, students describe and compare similarities and differences among plants using as many of their senses as they can. Foster the young biologists in your students, encouraging them to explore nature through focused observation, playful learning games, and collaborative outdoor activities. As they explore seasonal highlights in the Garden, students identify key parts and functions of plants, play the maple leaf match-up, make earth art, and more!

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe and compare plants using different resources, including their senses
  • Identify similarities and differences among plants.
  • Identify key parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruit)
  • List the basic factors necessary for plants to grow (water, nutrients, air, and sunlight)

Within the tranquil beauty of VanDusen exists a complex and intimately-connected ecosystem. Investigate how native plants interact with other organisms in BC’s environment, exploring interdependence hands-on with focused observation and basic tools. Students unearth the vital role decomposers play during a soil search, as well as collaborate to construct a food web.

  • Recognize how different components of an ecosystem are interconnected
  • Document observations and data on ecosystem interactions
  • Observe the biodiversity and complexity found within the VanDusen Garden ecosystem

As students enjoy the beauty and fragrance of flowers throughout VanDusen, they investigate the parts of a flower, their role in pollination, and how pollination fits in the life cycle of flowering plants. Students will search for pollinators in action -including a visit to our active beehives -while explor-ing the connections between pollinators, plants, and food production.

  • Search for a variety of flowers and pollinators and observe them in action
  • Learn about the parts of a flower and how each part is involved in the pollination process
  • Link pollination to the life cycle of flowering plants
  • Begin to understand the interdependence between pollinators and plants and how they are linked to the everyday needs of human beings

Hidden beneath the surface of VanDusen’s ponds and streams is a diverse world of beautiful and strange life. Students learn about and explore the aquatic environment, use nets to dip below the surface and identify the creatures they find. Students will also seek out the plants and animals that make their homes along the pond’s edge.

  • Investigate various water bodies looking for plants and wildlife
  • Understand the pond as a layered ecosystem (edges, bottom, water column, surface)
  • Collect, observe, and identify aquatic invertebrates
  • Learn that life cycles and survival are features of animal life

Seeds fly, float, hitchhike – even travel through the stomachs of birds – to spread to new places and grow. Students explore the Garden, delighting in the beauty of fall colour while they search for seeds with parachutes, hooks, or fleshy fruit surrounding them. Students dissect seeds and make “seed babies” to take home.

  • Consider how fall differs from other seasons
  • Begin to recognize the variety of seeds found in the natural environment
  • Discover the ingenious ways that seeds disperse themselves, and why
  • Relate seed dispersal to the life cycle of a flowering plant

45 Minute Guided Programs

Browse our 45 Minute Guided Programs

Students journey along the water’s edge, between volcanic walls, and among forest groves where they meet iconic native and exotic species. These budding naturalists will connect with their environment, use their senses to develop observational skills, understand the role of humans -including First Peoples -in ecosystems, and participate in storytelling and interactive games.

Program instruction is presented in alignment with the BC curriculum communication, creative and critical thinking, and social responsibility

  • Identify similarities and differences among plants
  • Understand the role of humans in ecosystems, including the traditional uses of plants among local First Peoples

While exploring the Garden to meet iconic trees and ancient plants, students think about how our interaction with the land changes over time, space, and culture – including the important perspectives of First Peoples. Students make sense of their place in this world through observation, storytelling, and collaborative learning as they gain historical context for the local environment.

  • Explore the history of the Garden and think about how people interact with the land and how that relationship changes over time and space
  • Understand how storytelling can pass on lessons, impart knowledge, and be a window into how people relate to nature and each other in a particular time, culture, or area. Kids will create their own story that communicates personal knowledge and values
  • Identify a selection of iconic trees – including catalpa, Douglas-fir, and maples – and ancient plants – such as horsetail, gunnera, or ferns.

In a city striving to be the greenest in the world, students analyze and apply sustainability theories through a variety of activities, such as debating, budgeting, or waste auditing. This program presents contemporary environmental issues to students and challenges them to strategize solutions – including how they can become agents of change.

  • Consider and think critically about the intersection of commerce and environmental sustainability.
  • Make connections between their actions, the actions of companies, and how those actions impact the environment.
  • Learn what systems and resources they and companies can use to increase environmental sustainability

Health & wellness, psychedelics, field trip health opens clinic in vancouver: q&a with founder ronan levy.

The new facility will feature the firm’s ketamine-assisted therapy program, as well as a range of health and lifestyle services

field trip vancouver

With its newest location in Vancouver, Field Trip Health Ltd (CSE: FTRP) (OTCQX: FTRPF) is growing its footprint of clinics, which feature psychotherapy aided by mind-expanding substances.

After opening its first location in Toronto in June 2020, the company has added seven locations in major U.S. cities, three in Canada and one in the Netherlands.

In Canada, its services focus on a program of psychotherapy aided by sessions of taking ketamine, an anesthetic and painkiller primarily used in veterinary work that has become a popular club drug for its dissociative, dance-friendly effects.

But according to research, and results from companies like Field Trip, the substance can be a powerful therapeutic tool that can lead to lasting benefits not seen with conventional methods.

As its Vancouver location opens this week, founder and executive chairman Ronan Levy talks to Mugglehead about what the new clinic will offer, why physicians are more open-minded about ketamine than cannabis as well as the balance between profit and accessibility in new-age health care services.

The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

You have a presence in Canada, the U.S. and Amsterdam. What kind of differences do you notice market-to-market, and then coming to Vancouver, what do you expect here? Are you going to be tailoring your services, or are they going to be pretty much the same across locations?

Vancouver is actually going to be a unique location for us. In all of the other Canadian and U.S. locations, we’re doing ketamine-assisted therapy. In the Netherlands, we’re doing psilocybin-assisted therapy. But what’s unique about Vancouver is that we’re going to start piloting other modalities as well.

We’ll be providing ketamine-assisted therapy for sure, but we’ll also start offering RMT services, hosting yoga classes — other kinds of health-related therapeutic techniques will be offered. As it starts to operate it won’t launch with that but those are plans.

So your ketamine-assisted therapy program, CORE, will be the main focus at the clinic?

Yeah. Initially, we started off with pretty structured programs where a person would go through four or six sessions in a fairly specific timeframe, now it’s become a little more flexible because scheduling challenges made it hard for people to adhere to those programs.

In our CORE program, most people who come in are experiencing treatment-resistant depression. You see the best results when they have four-to-six ketamine sessions. Typically what we do is an initial screening with a psychiatrist to make sure ketamine-assisted therapy is appropriate. There’s a preparatory session with your therapists and therapeutic team.

You have your first ketamine-assisted therapy session, and then following that there are about 30 minutes of integration therapy. And then typically you’d have two ketamine sessions, followed by one integration session. And that’s spaced out over maybe two ketamine sessions in the course of a week.

And then earlier the following week you do an integration session. During the integration session, there’s no ketamine. It’s just taking the window of neuroplasticity that follows the ketamine experience, and really trying to put that into behaviour change, outlook change, mindset change — all the things that support the mood improvements that come from the ketamine itself.

What are your main target audiences? And how are you reaching more people in those different audiences?

Our target person is someone who has experienced some level of treatment-resistant mental health challenge, whether that’s depression, anxiety, trauma or PTSD. For anyone who’s tried conventional approaches and hasn’t had success, I think ketamine-assisted therapy should be an option because we’re seeing just remarkable results. People with eating disorders can benefit from these kinds of therapies as well.

Do you have like a typical client lifecycle? I’m guessing some clients who get a lot out of one round of therapy. But I imagine you also have some who will have that and then probably return over a period of time.

It’s really hard to say to be honest. Our Toronto clinic has only been operating since last June so we didn’t have that many patients initially. But what we’re seeing is people typically complete the CORE program. And then about a handful of maybe like 20–30 per cent have since come back to do a single session — one ketamine session and one integration. Once and then maybe a few months later another one, so they’re treating it more like a maintenance approach as opposed to a transformative therapeutic approach, which is what the initial experience tends to be like.

Field Trip Health opens clinic in Vancouver Q&A with founder Ronan Levy - beds

Field Trip will be piloting a number of health and wellness services, like yoga, at its Vancouver location

From a business standpoint, when you’re talking about this mix of services in Vancouver, is that part of like galvanizing your existing client base? As in, you have people that go through the ketamine program but then you have all these other services, and so they keep coming in? Or is it more that there’s just a bigger range of services, so you’re bringing more people in, and then educating them about all the other stuff you offer? Or both?

Yeah, I think it’s bi-directional. By being able to offer additional services, I think we can support people better — hopefully helping them achieve a level of mental and emotional health in a very constructive way. And if they want to continue on with other activities or services, we hopefully extend those benefits. Conversely, though, psychedelic-assisted therapy is not new, but it’s a relatively new conversation for a lot of people. So if there are ways we can find to engage people in a meaningful way that gives us an opportunity to at least educate them on what’s happening and the availability of the services, we certainly would.

I know that you have a background in medical cannabis, and there’s a huge uphill battle there on the physician side that a vast majority either don’t know about it or still have a large amount of stigma toward it. In Canada, Field Trip relies on physicians directing patients to your services to a large degree. So is there a lot of work on your end, like reaching out to different physicians saying, ‘Here’s what we offer, here’s the evidence behind it,’ etc.

Yeah, absolutely. A couple of comments: when it came to cannabis, yes, there’s certainly a lot of resistance from physicians. And with Canadian Cannabis Clinics what we focused on doing was doing really good medicine. What that meant was treating patients where it’s appropriate, not prescribing cannabis where it wasn’t appropriate, following up with the referring physicians, making sure that referring physicians were part of the ongoing dialogue. We treated cannabis like every other specialty of medicine, which I think a lot of cannabis clinics did not. And that’s why we’re so effective at getting the medical community on board.

Read more: Canada’s flawed medical cannabis regime sees drop in client registrations

With ketamine, it’s the same playbook for us, which is we’re focused on doing good medicine, treating people in need, showing great results, keeping the referring physician in the loop and part of the process. But I think the resistance to what we’re doing ketamine has actually been lower than cannabis because even though it’s an off-label use, ketamine is a prescribed drug, comes with a [drug identification number], titrating it is well known and not a surprise to a lot of people. Many doctors work with ketamine.

So I think there’s just a level of understanding that goes with it, and a level of familiarity makes it an easier conversation, as well as the need. Speak to most family doctors, they’ll tell you that antidepressants are working for their patients, and they need alternatives.

In Canada, your offerings are mostly restricted to ketamine. But in Amsterdam, for example, you have a program with therapeutic psilocybin. And I know that there’s advocacy work going on in Canada from organizations like TheraPsil to have that sort of more available here as well. So is Field Trip involved in any advocacy work related to that? And would you like to offer the services here as well?

Yes we are and yes we would. We’re a part of the Canadian Psychedelic Association — one of the founding members. We’ve done a lot of education work with members of parliament. Part of the conversation that’s actually been precipitated by the review of the medically assisted dying legislation.

Everyone we’ve spoken to on a political level really resonates with the argument that if it’s a right in Canada that you can take a drug that will end your life, how can it make sense not to enable people to have access to a drug that may make the dying process much easier, more pleasant or significantly less anxiety-inducing?

It’s also a drug that helps military veterans deal with the PTSD of being at war. And so there seems to be a lot of open mindedness to it. Given that, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see some sort of regulatory change, at least for people in palliative care, next year.

So we’ve spoken with (Field Trip medical director) Dr. Michael Verbora previously on the double-edged nature of profit motives in a healthcare setting. Obviously, with money comes research and more availability, but at the same time, there’s also opportunity for helpful therapy that can be offered to like a wide variety of people, not just upper-middle class and above. What are your thoughts on that? How do you balance business objectives with making things accessible and doing a public good?

There’s no single solution to balancing access. Money is fundamentally an energy that enables growth, and we need more providers, we need more spaces, we need more research. Having a for-profit entity helps generate that funding.

I think it’s really important to keep in mind that the biggest cost associated with psychedelic-assisted therapies is not the drugs, it’s the fact that you have doctors and therapists, many or all of whom have advanced degrees and designations, spending a lot of time with people.

Anytime you have anything so labour intensive, it’s going to inherently become expensive, because people want to be paid fairly for their level of qualification. And so the answer is, there’s no single silver bullet, and I think we need for-profit entities.

You need not-for-profit entities funding research, like MAPS. I think you need not-for-profit entities funding access for marginalized communities. We certainly see a lot of that in the U.S. with military veterans and access.

The reception area at Field Trip’s clinic in Vancouver

And I think you need insurance — you need governments on board. You need insurers on board. I think through a collective effort — which we’ll get to, and I’ll explain why I think we’ll get there — you’re gonna be able to reach the most people possible. The reason I’m so confident is what we see in MAPS’s econometric studies of MDMA-assisted therapy, it should on average, save the U.S. healthcare system $100,000 per person.

We haven’t done the econometrics yet on ketamine-assisted therapy, but we know that for each improvement — the study suggests that for each one point improvement on a PHQ-9 score (a diagnostic tool for depression), productivity increases by 1.6 per cent. The studies suggest that people who have major depression or treatment-resistant depression tend to consume 30–40 per cent more medical resources than people who aren’t experiencing MDD or TRD. So the economics of providing access makes a lot of sense.

So on the insurance piece, given you have to be physician-referred in Canada, are there any insurers right now that cover your services?

There are extended health benefit plans that do cover the psychotherapy portion, so we bill in a way to try and maximize people’s ability to get reimbursed for the psychotherapy. For the ketamine, there’s really not much coverage

Do you anticipate any change on that? Especially because even if it’s an off-label use, it’s still being recommended by a doctor — it seems strange that there wouldn’t be coverage.

I think there will be change. But the reason that I hesitate is I think by the time that there’s enough evidence that people can support getting behind ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, you’re going to see the clinical trials for psilocybin — which are being specifically referred for treatment-resistant depression and major depression — come to fruition as well.

And because they will have a specific indication for psilocybin tied to mental health, I think you’ll see insurance coverage become much more accessible for those than ketamine.

Read more: Health Canada says patients should access medical psilocybin via clinical trials

Read more: US DEA suggests big increase of cannabis and psilocybin production for research

So there’s Field Trip Health, and then Field Trip Discovery. What kind of things is a Field Trip doing on the research side at the moment?

We’re looking to develop the next generation of psychedelic medicines. Psilocybin and MDMA are showing incredible promise, but one of the challenges with both of them, is that a session can be 4, 6, 8 or 10 hours. And because you need qualified people present during these sessions, it makes it very expensive.

So with one of our first compounds in a pipeline project , FT-104, we have something very similar to psilocybin, both objectively in terms of how it works in the brain, as well as objectively in terms of what the actual experience is like. But the duration of experience is about half that of psilocybin. You’re basically cutting the cost effectiveness in half.

And then we’ve also launched a new pipeline program, which is focused on psychedelics that have higher safety profiles. Overall, psychedelics are quite safe. But if they are used too frequently, they can create something called the 2B liability.

Psilocybin, LSD and tryptamines are kind of promiscuous, and they agonize a whole bunch of receptors. The 5HT2A receptor is the one that causes a psychedelic experience — you want to agonize that one. But 5HT2B receptor antagonized too much can create something called cardiac valvulopathy, basically a hardening of the cardiac valves. And so with our 200 series, we’re looking at ways to maintain the efficacy of the classic psychedelics, but reduce the potential 2B liability, which becomes particularly relevant to the as micro-dosing or chronic usage — as opposed infrequent, episodic uses — become more prevalent.

At Vancouver Mysteries we pride ourselves on our games’ immersive story-based experience. Let the game be their muse as they complete a creative writing assignment using one of our mysteries as a writing prompt. The students themselves are characters in the story, allowing them to find inspiration that much easier. In Heroes and Villains each team is a superhero league trying to save the planet from the evil Muck Monster. In Crime in Downtown, students are tough, street-wise detectives solving a murder mystery. Or maybe they are newly recruited secret agents whose mission is to save Vancouver from utter destruction in the spy thriller Secret Mission.

The ideas are endless! Here are just a few of them:

  • Continue the mystery by writing a short story about what happened after the mystery was solved.
  • Dive into the psyche of one of the characters or create your very own.
  • Create an alternate ending.
  • Write a film script, whether inspired by Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, or Marvel.
  • We can’t wait to see what your students create!

All private games (groups of 6 or more players) include a Game Operator who arrives in costume and in character as a secret agent or detective who starts and ends your game. The majority of our Game Operators are actors by training. You might even recognize them from local productions. Why not have your students join in on the fun? Make the game into an improv exercise by only giving your students a brief description of the chosen game beforehand. From there they must create and remain in character for the duration of the game. Vancouver Mysteries also has a soft spot for teams who arrive in costume, so go wild!

Exercise your students’ minds and bodies by playing a Vancouver Mysteries game. All of our games take place outdoors and cover 2-2.5 km. Our current record for the fastest game completed while still earning a perfect score was 52 minutes. Think your students can beat that?

Field Trips  – ages 12 and up

Are Your Students Up to the Challenge? – Absolutely! Vancouver Mysteries’ games offer an opportunity for students to use critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills during an outdoor activity.

Elementary School Field Trips – Grade 7s – 8-12 year-olds play Heroes and Villains Family: The Superhero Quest . This game was specifically designed for elementary school students.

Grade 8 – High School – Any of our three games are suitable for high school students ages 12 and up!

Scouts Canada and Girl Guides – Our field trip price offer extends to Scouts Canada and Girl Guide groups.

Day Camps – Please phone the Mystery Hotline to speak with the Experience Manager directly about incorporating a game into your scheduled activities.

Under 8-years-old? We don’t recommend our games for superheroes under the age of 8 – but we’d love if they come back once they have a few more years of saving the world under their belt!

Easy Field Trips to Book – Flexible to Fit Your Schedule

Please allow for 2 to 2.5 hours game time (depending on group size) when planning the rest of your day. There are 3 nearby food courts for fast and easy lunch options and also many local parks to use as picnic areas.

Contact us for more information. Our Experience Manager will answer your questions and work with you to incorporate a Vancouver Mysteries game into your school year.

How it works.

Intake is thorough in order to determine which of our ketamine programs is the best treatment fit for you and your goals. Our intake involves two steps: an intake medical questionnaire and a thorough personal assessment with one of our licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs).

2. Preparation

To ensure a beneficial journey, we take time to outline what you can expect during your treatment. Our team will guide you through creating an optimal mindset for your sessions, setting your intentions, aftercare, and how to make the most of your time with us.

3. Exploration

During exploration sessions, you'll enter an altered state of consciousness. Clients describe feelings of deep relaxation, wonder, and a newfound capacity to explore challenging emotions and life experiences, with the support of our highly skilled team.

4. Integration (*under KAP Plan)

In an altered, neuroplastic state, the brain is able to make new connections and rewrite learned patterns. Our skilled therapists help you draw out insights and ensure your gains from your Ketamine Exploration are sustained and integrated into your life, in order to prevent a relapse of your symptoms. 4

Our evidence-based treatment protocol involves six ketamine explorations paired under our KAP plan with supportive integration sessions. Throughout your journey, we personalize your ketamine dosage based on your comfort level, history, and tolerance to the medicine. We start with a low dose and slowly increase your dose throughout your journey to help you reach deeper breakthroughs.

Important Notes

Plan to have a relaxing recovery day after your ketamine exploration, without significant obligations, work, or plans.

You must arrange for a support companion to escort you home after your treatment. Your support companion is welcome to stay in our comfortable waiting area for the duration of your treatment.

We ask that you refrain from driving and operating heavy machinery for 24 hours after your ketamine exploration.

Find the relief you’ve been looking for.

We want to help. The first step in our intake process is an initial questionnaire, prior to booking your consultation with our medical team. Let’s get started.

Frequently asked questions.

How is this different from the therapy i’ve already tried.

Our approach builds upon the effectiveness of traditional talk therapy. The combination of psychedelic medicine and talk therapy means our treatment can have an impact more quickly, and over a shorter period of time. This is why we recommend the Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) plan for maximal effectiveness. Our therapists are specialized and trained in psychedelic healing, in addition to their existing accreditations. They’re experts in helping clients unpack their complex psychedelic experiences so they can build new thought patterns for long-lasting relief. They help clients through treatment, every step of the way.

I’ve tried psychedelics before. How is this different?

Pairing psychedelics with the structure, support, and knowledge of an expert therapist turns a psychedelic trip into a therapeutic and healing experience. You can think of doing psychedelics without a therapist like sailing without a compass. You may eventually find your way, but might get lost before you reach your destination. A therapist is like having a GPS on your healing journey. They guide and equip you with the tools you need to reach your goals, helping you to streamline your healing and get you to where you want to be.

How do you prevent a “Bad Trip”?

A comforting atmosphere, careful preparation, and intention setting will minimize any unpleasantness that might come up for you. To start, a low dose of ketamine administered in your first session helps to get you familiar with the sensations and feelings. Due to the exploratory nature of ketamine, some clients face challenging emotions, memories, visions, and experience intense bodily sensations. Often these difficult experiences provide an opportunity to process the events and emotions that have been contributing to challenges in your daily life. This is why having a therapist available during your psychedelic exploration is so valuable – they’re trained to help you navigate emotional pain and discomfort.

Can I be on medication or use substances while going through treatment?

Your medical needs and treatment plan is developed just for you. During your medical consultation and therapy intake, your medical team can address any concerns related to medications or substances. Most antidepressants can be continued through the duration of treatment. We recommend avoiding some substances for 48 hours prior to your exploratory ketamine session unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor or cleared by your Field Trip medical team. These include alcohol, cannabis, opioids, NSAID pain relievers, stimulants, sedative-hypnotics, benzodiazepines, and muscle relaxants.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

As all sessions are conducted with a registered therapist (psychotherapist, registered social worker, psychologist), you may be eligible for partial reimbursement under extended health benefits, depending on your employer or insurer's coverage limits. We will provide you with the necessary documentation to seek reimbursement from your insurance provider.

Are there any conditions that would make me ineligible?

Our program is not suitable for those with the following conditions:

Allergy to ketamine

Pregnancy/Breast Feeding

Personal history of schizophrenia or psychosis

Uncontrolled hypertension (blood pressure)

Severe recent head injury/trauma

During your medical consultation, please flag if you have any of the following conditions, as they may impact your eligibility for the program:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Hypertension

Respiratory issues

Medication risks (benzodiazepines, opioids)

Active substance use

Significant past substance abuse

Personality disorders

Acute suicidal ideation

Does this treatment replace my therapy or medication in the long term?

Our clients report better-coping skills, feelings of self-love, an increase in positive body image, and deepened understanding of themselves after treatment. Some clients even report relief from chronic pain and physical discomfort. Though some clients have gone off of their medication after finishing their treatment with us, that may not be best for every client. ‍ Ultimately, our program is meant to provide long-term relief from the pain of mental health conditions. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is a powerful tool for healing.

Do I require a doctor’s referral to go through treatment?

In the US, a doctor’s referral is not required. During your initial assessment with our licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), we will determine if you are a good fit for our program. ‍

1. Based on Field Trip Health Preliminary Data, 2020-2022

2. % of Field Trip clients with moderate to severe symptoms reporting improvements in symptoms after treatment who responded to Field Trip’s post-treatment questionnaire. Disclaimer: Ketamine is not for everyone and results may vary. Please consult a physician or other medical professional before commencing treatment.

Black-footed Albatross

Leader: Randy Hill ( [email protected] ) call or text to 360-975-2573; co-leaders Cindy McCormack and possibly Jim Danzenbaker, a spotter on the pelagic trip.

Trip travel type expectations: Pace: 1-2; Terrain:  A-C with mostly stops in route walking trails, along sandy beach, and from viewpoints.  The pelagic trip includes limited mobility standing or sitting while on the boat, but consider susceptibility to motion sickness and long hours of sun with appropriate preparation for variable ocean conditions.  Potential wet or breezy conditions suggest having layers, rain gear, and waterproof boots for comfort.

Targets are near and off-shore birds and mammals during a period of high species diversity:  albatross to alcids, whales, dolphins, ocean sunfish and more. Onshore a wide variety of late summer migrants including waterfowl, waders, shorebirds, gulls and songbirds in coastal bay and estuary, freshwater wetland and riverine, and some forest and other habitats.

Itinerary:  The group will be finalized by 8/20, with ride-sharing determined before the trip.

We will meet on 8/25 at 07:15 at the Salmon Creek park-and-ride to carpool; no overnight parking.  Birding on the way with various stops along US-12 and Grays Harbor, possibly to Ocean Shores, and including Hoquiam WTP and possibly Bottle Beach; tidal timelines will determine the specific locations.  Lodging on your own, but suggested in Westport area as we meet on the boat the next morning by 05:45.

8/26 is the pelagic trip with Westport Seabirds http://westportseabirds.com/possible-species/ from 06:00 to 15:30.  When we return to dock, we can bird areas around Westport before dinner.

8/27 will include more birding near Westport, with travel south to Tokeland and other locations around Willapa Bay before returning home by 6pm via SR-4.

Fully vaccinated only for this weekdays trip. Spotting scopes highly encouraged and bring Discover Pass if you have one for state parks visits.  You should bring motion sickness medication unless you have a positive track record on the open ocean without medication.  This link could be helpful to prepare: http://westportseabirds.com/preparing-for-a-pelagic-trip/

Limit of 4 cars, 10 total participants but initially only 6 of the remaining 10 spots on this pelagic trip will be held for a limited period. It is recommended that you sign up early, certainly before the end of June, before spaces are filled.

Options for this trip include the described full three days , or one day pelagic trip only under the VAS allotment, or two days either with an early return after the pelagic , starting with the pelagic , or without the pelagic trip (land only) included.

Sign-up should be through VAS field trips, but all lodging and payment for the pelagic trip will be the responsibility of participant .  Contact Randy with any questions and to secure the pelagic trip reservation and field trip registration.

SEPT. 7, 2021: Migration at Larch Mountain

Leaders: Jim Danzenbaker and Cindy McCormack; call or text Randy Hill to register: 360-975-2573

Target species are higher elevation (above 2000’) forest songbirds including warblers among other passerines, woodpeckers, raptors, and higher elevation migrant and resident species.  Also expansive views.

Itinerary:  Meet at 06:45 in Hockinson at the Fire District 3 eastside parking lot at 17718 NE 159 th St. (45.737992, -122.490038).  From there, we will head up 139 th St/NE Rawson Road to DNR land east to the L-1520 gate and park at the crossroads.

Northern Pygmy-Owl, Canada Jay, Western Bluebird and Townsend’s Solitaire nest locally; pikas and snowshoe hares are resident. We will be mostly stationary but also bird along the roads depending on wind conditions and weather; a diversion to another location is possible based on wind. Carpooling as much as possible; fully vaccinated only. Spotting scopes optional, but a Discover Pass is required on this DNR area. Limit of 6 cars, 12 total participants.

Trip travel type expectations: Pace: 1    Terrain:  some A-B   < one mile walking.

SEPT. 18, 2021: Klickitat County Fall Migration Count

Leaders: Randy Hill and others; call or text for additional details and to register: 360-975-2573

Target species are all birds found within an assigned route in Klickitat County, with a variety of resident and migratory species associated with higher elevation, drier grass and shrub, rocky, lake/riverine, agricultural, neighborhood and town, and/or mixed forests of eastern Washington. This is a continuing data collection event with team leaders and variable participation each year; for this reason the sign-up deadline is September 9th to assign participants to teams.

Itinerary:  Meeting point and start time to be determined.  An early start (likely by 05:30) required for travel east to reach whatever route is assigned; expect a full day.  Carpooling as much as possible following COVID protocols; fully vaccinated only.

We will be mostly birding along roads with stop-and-go at pullouts, some short walks, and on some routes using trails to cover as much habitat as possible. Spotting scope suggested although not required, but a Discover Pass is suggested as there are several DNR and WDFW areas where they are required.

This Is the Happiest Country in the World for 2024

Unfortunately, the U.S. did not fare well in the new World Happiness Report.

field trip vancouver

scanrail/Getty Images

For Greek philosopher Aristotle, happiness is a virtue, and it seems like the Finnish have mastered it, as the Nordic country tops the list of happiest countries in the world for a record seventh year in a row, according to the newly released report for 2024 . Finland scored 7.741, which is slightly less than its result last year (7.804 out of 10).

In the top 3, the rankings mirror 2023, Denmark comes in second (7.583), and Iceland is third (7.525). Israel has given up its fourth place from last year to Sweden and is now fifth.

Congratulations are also in order for Costa Rica (12th), Travel+Leisure ’s Destination of the Year, and Kuwait (13th), which are making their debut among the top 20 happiest states.

However, there is bad news for the U.S., which has fallen to No. 23 — its worst result since the report was first published in 2012. The biggest contributor to this is “a large drop in the well-being of Americans under 30,” states a press release.

For the first time this year, there are two sub-rankings by age, and while the U.S. scores 10th for happiness in people over 60, it ranks 62 for those under 30. The happiest country for young people in this category is Lithuania.

“We found some pretty striking results. There is a great variety among countries in the relative happiness of the younger, older, and in-between populations. Hence the global happiness rankings are quite different for the young and the old, to an extent that has changed a lot over the last dozen years,” John F. Helliwell, Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Vancouver School of Economics, University of British Columbia, and a founding editor of the World Happiness Report, said in a press release provided to T+L.

The report has found that, since 2019, the well-being of young people aged 15 to 24 has also fallen in Western Europe, North Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Overall, boomers (aka those born before 1965) are happier than millennials, according to the findings.

There are significant changes elsewhere on the list, with Serbia (37th) and Bulgaria (81st) scoring the most significant jumps — with over 63 spots — since the report’s inaugural edition. Afghanistan is, again, at the bottom of the ranking.

The 2024 World Happiness Report was compiled based on the self-assessments of the quality of life of the population of each country from 2021 through 2023.

You can read the full findings on worldhappiness.report .

Capitals face tough task on road vs. Canucks

The Minnesota Wild are making a hard charge to put themselves into playoff position. A Southern California sweep when they visit the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday would go a long way toward keeping their Stanley Cup hopes alive.

The Washington Capitals have won three in a row to significantly improve their playoff chances with 15 games remaining, but the next half-dozen will go a long way toward determining their fate.

Knicks’ OG Anunoby could miss multiple games due to right elbow ‘injury management’

Knicks’ OG Anunoby could miss multiple games due to right elbow ‘injury management’

SAN FRANCISCO — OG Anunoby will “most likely” miss the rest of the New York Knicks’ road trip because of what the team is calling “injury management,” head coach Tom Thibodeau said Monday. The team did not supply a timeline for the injury beyond this week.

The Knicks ruled Anunoby, who returned from surgery on his right elbow on March 12, out Monday morning, the day of their game with the Golden State Warriors . He flew home to undergo an MRI later. Thibodeau said the results “came back clean.” Instead, it showed inflammation in the area where he had the operation, the Knicks said.

“We want to make sure that he’s completely healthy,” Thibodeau said. “We knew this was a possibility when you bring a guy back from surgery. If there’s discomfort and stuff and he can’t function the way that we feel he needs to function on the court we’re just going to give him the time that he needs to let it calm down and we’ll go from there.”

New York has one more game on its road trip — at the Denver Nuggets on Thursday — before heading back to Madison Square Garden for a Saturday game with the Brooklyn Nets .

Anunoby started to show obvious signs of pain during the Knicks’ win in Portland on Thursday when he grimaced most times that he swiped down with the right arm or shot the basketball. The Knicks insisted after that game he was not injured. They expected “bumps and bruises” like that, Thibodeau said after the game.

The next day, the team listed Anunoby as questionable for Saturday’s game against the Sacramento Kings . They listed the ailment as “injury management.” He played but shot only 1 of 8 from the field. Most of his misses, which he released with the arm that had just undergone surgery, fell unusually short.

Once again, New York listed him as questionable for the next contest, this one against the Warriors. But on Monday morning, they toggled his status from questionable to out.

Thibodeau declined to answer whether Anunoby returned from the surgery too early.

“You can’t work backwards,” he said. “There’s many steps he had to go through. He met all the markers. He was cleared. This is a possibility. Whenever you come back from surgery, this is what you’re looking at. And so, we feel good about where he is. And just give him the time he needs.”

Anunoby underwent surgery to remove a loose bone fragment from his right elbow in early February. He resumed on-court activities approximately three weeks later and moved on to contact drills only six days after that. By March 12, he was competing in games again.

The Knicks immediately sparked upon his return, winning their first three games with him back in the lineup. They are now 15-2 during games he plays in this season.

But now, once again, he is out indefinitely.

“Anytime you come back like he did, you go through a game, you could be fine,” Thibodeau said. “Then the next day you want to see how you feel the next day. That’s why oftentimes when a guy comes back we always say he went through practice, but we want to see how he feels tomorrow. Well, it’s the same thing. He’s coming off surgery, so he played in the game. There’s discomfort. So we’re just going to let it calm down and we’ll go from there.”

Anunoby, 26, is averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game for the Knicks this season.
