Apple releases Safari 16 with new features for Tab Groups and passwords

Safari 16 follows iOS 16 into the wild.

Stage Manager running Safari on a MacBook Air

Apple has officially released Safari 16 to Mac users running macOS Ventura and macOS Monterey .

The latest update, which brings some usual bug fixes and performance improvements to the browser, also adds some new features to Tab Groups and passwords.

Tab Groups get a number of updates in Safari 16, including the ability to customize your background image and favorites for each Tab Group's start page. You'll also be able to pin frequently visited sites within Tab Groups.

Outside of Tab Groups, the new features are pretty varied. Settings for websites now follow you across your devices. You can also now edit strong passwords that Safari has suggested in order for it to work with the password requirements of a specific website.

The full details of Safari 16 are in the release notes and below:

Safari 16 introduces new features, even faster performance, and improved security, such as:

  • Tab Group start pages let you add different background images and favorites for each Tab Group
  • Pinned tabs in Tab Groups enable you to pin frequently visited websites for each Tab Group
  • Tabs in the sidebar let you see a list view of your open tabs
  • Settings you've set for specific websites now sync across devices
  • Strong password editing lets you adjust strong passwords to meet website-specific requirements
  • Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices.

Apple released a lot more than Safari 16 today

In addition to releasing Safari 16, Apple also rolled out the public versions of iOS 16 , watchOS 9 , and tvOS 16 today. Those releases add a lot more features to the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV.

We're also now days away from the new iPhone. The iPhone 14 , iPhone 14 Pro , and iPhone 14 Pro Max will release to the world on Friday, September 16. The iPhone 14 Plus, the new big regular iPhone model, will not release until October.

Apple releases Safari 16 for macOS Monterey and Big Sur

Apple releases Safari 16 for macOS Monterey and Big Sur

The Safari 16 update is now available for macOS Monterey and Big Sur users. Let's take a look at the new version of the web browser.

What's new in Apple Safari 16 for macOS

I mentioned a few features that were introduced in Safari 16, when the first Technology Preview of the browser was released. Apple states that it has improved the performance of the browser, this includes tweaks to various animations, accessibility options, security, etc in WebKit . It also adds support for Web Inspector extensions.

Tab Groups Start Pages

Safari 16 lets you add Tab Group Start Pages, aka new tab pages, per group. To add shortcuts, click the new tab button. Drag and drop some websites from your bookmarks to the Tab Group Favorites section. This serves as your Tab Group's Start Page.

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups Start Page

You can hide the shortcuts by clicking the button in the bottom right corner and disabling the option that says "Tab Group Favorites". There is another way to access your frequently visited websites. Right-click on a tab in a Tab Group, and pin it to prevent it from being closed.

Apple Safari Tab Groups favorites

Safari 16 supports 2 view modes for Tab Groups: a list view, and an overview. To view a list of your tabs, right-click on the Tab Group's name in the sidebar, and select "Show Tabs in Sidebar".

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups sidebar

The list can be collapsed in similar fashion by clicking "Hide Tabs in Sidebar".

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups show in sidebar

The Show Tab Overview option in the sidebar's context menu switches to a thumbnail view. You can also toggle this mode by clicking the dual pane button in the top right corner of Safari's window.

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups Overview

You can customize the appearance of the current Tab Group from the bottom-right menu in the Start Page. Select the background image option, and pick an image that you would like to use as the wallpaper. You may set a different background images for each Tab Group.

As for UI Changes, some shortcuts in the sidebar have been moved to the bottom, this includes Bookmarks, Reading List, Shared with You, and iCloud Tabs. The Safari 16 update fixes 4 security issues in the browser, you can read about them on Apple's support portal .

Settings sync across devices

Safari 16 will sync the settings that you have set for websites across your other devices. e.g. if you blocked notifications, location access, etc. So you don't have to choose the options every time you access the website on one of your Apple devices.

Password Editing

The password manager in Safari 16 now supports the editing of strong passwords in order to comply with a website's requirements. When you sign up for an account on a website and click the Passwords button, Safari will generate a password for you.

Apple Safari 16 edit strong password

Click the words "Strong Password" to bring up the Passwords panel into view. Select the "Other Options" button, and click the "Edit Strong Password" option to customize the password.

AVIF format

Safari 16 on iOS introduces support for the AVIF format for still images. It is an alternative to PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and supports lossless and lossy compression, multiple color spaces, etc. AVIF support and Passkeys are not yet available in Safari 16 for Mac and iPad, Apple says that it will add these features to the browser when macOS Ventura and iPadOS are released in October.

Open the Apple menu on your Mac, and head to About this Mac > and check for Software Update to install Safari 16 on your machine. The latest version is available alongside the macOS 12.6 update that was released yesterday.

I wonder why Microsoft is unable to release the same quality software as Apple does. Thanks @Ashwin for the article! :]

“I wonder why Microsoft is unable to release the same quality software as Apple does.”?

How many hardware configurations does Apple officially support? How many hardware configurations does Microsoft officially support? Which company designs, makes, sells etc… the hardware that Apple supports?

Fu<king stupid question.

“How many hardware configurations does Apple officially support? How many hardware configurations does Microsoft officially support?”

Irrelevant. The UI/UX team and the kernel/hardware team have nothing in common.

You have to be so nasty? State your points but leave the insults out.

AVIF is nice (and better than WebP!) but the real game changer will be JPEG XL.

Tab Group Updates

Introduced in iOS 15, Tab Groups let you organize and save your tabs into different segments that you can swap between. So, for example, if you're planning a trip, you can save all your tabs into a "Trip" group. In iOS 16, Apple takes Tab Groups even further with new features.

Pinned Tabs

Pinned tabs are now available in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, and they can be used in Tab Groups. If you have tabs in your Tab Group that you want to have open all the time, pinning is an option. To pin a tab to a Tab Group in iOS 16, open up the Tab Group then long press on the URL bar in Safari and choose the "Pin Tab" option.

Passkeys are meant to replace traditional passwords when signing into websites or apps, and Apple is aiming to roll out Passkeys starting in iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura.

Passkey Feature Orange 1

Passkeys rely on iCloud Keychain, which in turn requires two-factor authentication for further protection. Passkeys sync across all of a user's devices through ‌iCloud‌ Keychain, which is end-to-end encrypted with its own cryptographic keys.

Passkeys will work on all Apple devices, but Apple is also working with companies like Microsoft and Google to ensure that Passkeys can also be used with non-Apple devices.

Extension Syncing

If you've downloaded an extension on another device, you can see it in the Safari preferences on your ‌iPhone‌ thanks to Extensions syncing, a new iOS 16 feature.

ios 16 extensions syncing

If you don't want to share extensions across devices, you can toggle off the option in the same Settings section.

Web Push Notifications

Website push notifications have been available through Safari on the Mac for some time now, but in iOS 16, these push notifications are also going to be available on the ‌iPhone‌ and iPad .

Support for web push notifications won't be available when iOS 16 launches, with the feature coming in an update later this year.

As on the Mac, web notifications will be available on an opt-in basis, and you will be able to choose websites to receive notifications for.

Website Settings Sync

Your website settings like page zoom, automatic Reader view, and more, will now sync across devices so you only need to set your preferences once. If you don't want to share settings for websites across devices, you can toggle it off in the Safari section of the Settings app.

Strong Password Editing

When you're creating a website account using Safari, Safari will suggest a strong password for you to use, which syncs with ‌iCloud‌ Keychain. Unfortunately, some websites have specific requirements like a certain number of symbols or capital letters that strong passwords don't always fulfill.

Focus Filters

Apple in iOS 16 added a new Focus option called Filters. Filters are designed to allow users to filter out content within apps, displaying a specific Safari Tab Group or Mail account. When you use a Focus with a filter set, the app with the filter will only show what you've selected, hiding everything else.

Lift Subject From Background

iOS 16 has a fun feature that lets you drag subjects right out of images, and it works in the Safari app. Open up a webpage with any image, long press on the image, and then choose the "Copy Subject" option.

Does the new iCloud Password Editing feature allow you to change easily the already set passwords? Because many times we need to change the password and using iCloud Keychain used to be a bit difficult or clunky (or I’m doing it wrong). Also I’m really wishing passkeys are broadly implemented soon.

Safari update brings new collaboration and security features in iOS 16

Avatar for Allison McDaniel

Safari is receiving a fresh update with iOS 16 this fall, as announced during WWDC 2022 ‘s opening keynote. The refresh also comes to devices compatible with iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura at the same time. There are lots of new features and updates coming to Apple devices this year. Let’s take a deep dive on what to expect from Safari, Apple’s web browser.

More collaboration features come to Safari update

It’s easier than ever to collaborate with others using Apple’s own browser. This update to Safari brings a new feature called Shared Tab Groups. With this feature, users can collaborate on a set of tabs and see instant updates while working together. They can also share tabs and bookmarks right from the browser. Tab Groups will have their own start pages that users can customize with a background, bookmarks, and unique sections that the group can see and edit.

Site default logo image

Safari is more secure than ever

Safari’s new update also brings more security features like passkeys, a sign-in method that replaces passwords on the web and in apps. The passwords are never stored on a web server and stay on the device, making it impossible for hackers to steal them in a data breach. With the passkeys feature, Touch ID and Face ID are used for biometric verification purposes. Also, iCloud keychain will sync passwords across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. I personally love these tools as I don’t have to type in my passwords all the time.

9to5Mac’s Take

I think this new update could be pretty useful. I’m especially impressed with the increase in new collaboration features in Safari. While I think Tab Groups could be super helpful for work and/or school, it’s hard to imagine seeing them in use. As these features are limited to Apple users, I’d like to see a better workflow between Apple and non-Apple devices, but I know that won’t happen.

What do you think of the new features coming to Safari with iOS 16? Let us know in the comments.

Preferences have disappeared from the Mac Safari Version 16.5.2. Where what it gone?

What setting are you looking for in Preferences? Safari -> Preferences have been renamed to Safari -> Settings . However, the menu is similar.

After updating to Safari 16.5..2 on my old MacBook Air, it disappeared. Your Mac is up to date -macOS Big Sur 11.7.8

Why did Safari 16.5.2 disappear? And Why did MacOS Big Sur 11.7.8 appear on my MacBook Air, that I did not update?

If you run an earlier version of macOS, like Big Sur or Monterey Safari 16.5.2 and macOS Big Sur 11.7.8 appear as separate updates. If you update only to Safari 16.5.2, the Safari update disappears while macOS 11.7.8 still appears until you install it.

I’m running macOS Ventura 13.4.1(c) and Safari 16.5.2 on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro machine and since the update every time I am typing something in the middle of typing Safari will just switch the focus to another arbitrary item. It is about the most annoying thing I can imagine to have happen. This message has been copy and pasted because it has done it three times now while writing this very thing. Thank you TextEdit….

Uhh that must be annoying. Have you updated to the recently released macOS Ventura 13.5?

iOS 16 Safari — the biggest changes coming to your iPhone’s browser

Shared Tab Groups and passkeys are the biggest changes in the new iPhone software update

iOS Safari on iPhone

iOS 16 Safari isn't quite the radical reboot of the mobile web browser that iOS 15 introduced. For starters, the tab bar is staying in the same place, at the bottom of the screen by default. (This assumes that you didn't move the tab bar back to the top of the screen the minute you upgraded to iOS 15.) But there are still some changes in Apple's updated iPhone software — one that will be apparent right away and another that will take time to develop.

The change you can use the moment you install iOS 16 — whether you download the developer beta , plan to wait for the iOS 16 public beta's arrival in July or won't check out iOS 16 until the full version arrives in the fall — is Shared Tab Groups. This feature builds on a less controversial addition from iOS 15 Safari , by letting you take all those web pages you've grouped together and share them with other people.

In addition, Apple is also using iOS 16 to introduce us to passkeys , its attempt to usher in a password-free future for web browsing. Instead of having to remember and enter in a password for each online site, the updated version of Safari issues you a digital key tied to your your user account and verified with biometric information like Face ID on your iPhone. The change isn't going to happen overnight, but Apple is betting that it leads to more secure browsing that what we experience now.

These changes to iOS 16's version of Safari aren't taking place in a vacuum. They're being implemented alongside similar updates from macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16 , both of which figure to arrive alongside the finished version of Apple's iPhone software this fall. Here's what we know about the iPhone implementation of these updates based on Apple's iOS 16 preview and what people who've used the developer beta have been saying about Safari.

iOS 16 Safari: Shared Tab Groups

As we mentioned, Tab Groups came to Safari with last year's iOS 15 update, and while I felt the feature was better suited for the Mac, it was still helpful for research projects to keep related web pages grouped together. At the very least, Safari Tab Groups brought some measure of organization to the iPhone's default web browser.

With iOS 16, Tab Groups are picking up collaboration features, too. Shared Tab Groups is the big addition to Safari that does exactly what its name implies — you can take those Tab Groups you've assembled and share them with other people. They can add browser tabs of their own, contributing to your research project.

The benefits of Shared Tab Groups should be apparent. If you're planning a vacation, you and your partner can exchange tabs featuring possible lodgings, to-dos and travel info. You can share research with fellow students on a school project or relevant web pages for a work project you're collaborating on with colleagues. As with Tab Groups, the shared version syncs across the different Apple devices you own (assuming they're all running the latest software updates that Apple's releasing this year).

Sharing Tab Groups is as easy a tapping the share button next to the name of the Tab Group and selecting who you want to share with. The feature promises real-time collaboration — you'll see the icons of the people in your share group on the tabs they're looking at, and you'll be able to see any changes made as they happen. You can share Tab Groups through Messenger, as part of the chat app's newfound collaboration capabilities in iOS 16.

Other Tab Groups improvements in iOS 16 Safari

Shared Tab Groups grabs the headlines, but it's not the only enhancement Apple is introducing to this particular feature. You can now distinguish your different Tab Groups with their own customized start page. That includes a different background image for each group as well as group-specific favorites. In addition, iOS 16 Safari supports pinned tabs for your different Tab Groups.

iOS 16 Safari passkeys

Back in May, Apple joined Google and Microsoft to announce expanded support for the FIDO passwordless sign-in standard . iOS 16 Safari yields the first fruits of that stepped-up support in the form of passkeys, which are meant to do away with passwords when you sign into websites and apps.

The problem with passwords — besides the fact that not everyone uses the best password practices — is that they can be obtained via phishing and other social engineering attacks if you're not vigilant. And even if you are and use one of the best password managers , someone could still hack into the website of a database or company and steal your login credentials that way. Passkeys answer that threat by tying a digital key to your user account and then having you confirm that you're the one signing in either through a fingerprint or face scan. (That's Touch ID or Face ID, if you're using Apple's hardware.)

It's unclear how prominent passkeys will be when iOS 16 launches — you'd imagine Apple will implement them with its own websites and services first — but Apple promises that you will be able to sync them across all the Apple devices you own through your iCloud keychain. Additionally, Apple's involvement with FIDO means that you'll be able to sign into non-Apple devices by scanning a QR code with your phone and confirming your identity with Touch ID or Face ID.

In its passkeys preview at WWDC in June, Apple described the move to the new login standard as a journey, meaning passwords will remain with us for a little while longer. To that end, iOS 16 promises some additional password improvements such as enhancements to strong passwords generated in Safari. The Wi-Fi section of the Settings also is also getting a new edit button that lets you review Wi-Fi passwords stored on your phone so that you either share them with others or delete them if you no longer need them.

Hold off on installing this update for now. It seems to have website loading issues similar to those experienced by Safari 16.5.2 (a) running on a device patched with the recent Rapid Security Response updates. Apple will undoubtedly release a new version soon.

Can someone who’s running Monterey and has installed this update confirm whether or not it’s working with Facebook and Instagram? It’s not in my virtual machine, but since it seems the problem with 16.5.2 (a) in Ventura was related to the user agent string, this version shouldn’t have suffered from the problem.

I’m running Monterey and have Safari 16.5.2 (17615.2.9.101.1, 17615) installed. Facebook seems to work fine (I hardly ever use it, but I could log in and the site seems like the normal desktop site). However, Instagram gives me “Sorry, this page isn’t available.” for even the Log In page. I can log into Instagram in Firefox just fine, so not sure what that means.

:man_shrugging:

Too weird! For me, Facebook and Instagram don’t work in the VM, Instagram doesn’t work on my 2020 iMac with 16.5.2 (a) or 16.5.2, and both work on my M1 MacBook Air with 16.5.1 (a) and 16.5.2.

I’m running Monterey 12.6.7. On Monday 7/10 I got the security update that I installed, Version 16.5.2 (17615.2.9.101.1, 17615) at 9:28 PM. Ever since then I can’t load over 90% of my web pages (CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Appleinsider, 9to5Mac, Rotten Tomatoes, etc). The webpages draw then in a few seconds they draw again then a few seconds later they try to redraw but get a gray screen with an error message in the middle saying "A problem repeatedly occurred with “URL” and a button that says “Reload Webpage”. Safari also shows in the Finder under Date Modified 7/10/23, 9:28 PM.

That almost sounds like you’re hitting repeated redirects and eventually failing. I’m not sure what could cause it, but do you have any odd DNS setups?

Im not quite sure what you mean by an old DNS setup. I talked to Apple last night and the suggested I reinstall Monterey or upgrade to Ventura. Then I saw today that there’s a new dot release for Monterey in beta so I might wait for it and see if it fixes things.

“Odd” DNS setup. :-) Could you be relying on unusual DNS servers that could be failing lookups in strange ways? You’d know—most people never tweak their DNS settings in the Network settings pane.

I’m just using my Comcast DNS server look ups. I’ll check tonight if they were changed.

Thanks Mike Retondo

Safari redirects is fixed. I hoped it would be fixed when Apple released 12.6.8 the other day, but it wasn’t. I logged in tonight to try more diagnostics, so I started Safari, and the problem was still occurring as expected. Then OpenCore-Patcher popped up telling me there was an update, I was one version older. So I updated as usual and afterward, Safari was fixed. Nothing in the log fixes mentioned Safari but hey I’ll take the win!

Thanks for your help

iOS 16.5 Brings These Major Security Fixes to Your iPhone

The latest iPhone software update patches a few bugs that might be actively exploited.

The latest iOS update can help secure your iPhone.

Though Apple announced iOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference , you should still download the latest iOS update now. The tech giant released iOS 16.5  on May 18 , and the update gives your device a lot of security patches and fixes, including for three security issues that might be actively exploited.

CNET Tech Tips logo

To download iOS 16.5, go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the onscreen prompts.

The latest iPhone update patches almost 40 issues and bugs , Apple said in its patch notes, including three security issues that might be actively exploited. These three security issues relate to WebKit, the internet browser engine used in Safari and developed by Apple.

One of these issues could disclose sensitive information to a third party, and another could allow a third party to execute commands on your device without your knowledge. Fixes for these issues are in 16.5 for anyone who missed the release of the first iPhone Rapid Security Response, iOS 16.4.1 (a) . The third issue could allow a third party access to more information across your device than is allowed.

The iOS update also patches an issue where someone could access your contacts from your lock screen. While Apple has provided ways to customize your lock screen , some people have run into issues where the lock screen can allow others to access some iPhone features, like replying to messages and even your Wallet .

Other patches in the update include stopping some apps from bypassing privacy preferences, blocking some apps from reading sensitive location information and preventing app termination when opening a PDF file.

For more, you can check out what iOS 17 features I'm excited about . You can also take a look at the  new features iOS 16.5 brings to your iPhone and what could be coming to your iPhone with iOS 16.6 .

macOS Safari Full Installer Database. Download Directly from Apple!

Download macOS Safari Full Installers

This database will contain download links for macOS Safari full Installer pkg files (Safari16.0MontereyAuto.pkg example). This file is the same full installer that you would download directly from software update for Intel and Apple Silicon M1 Mac Computers. The “SafarixxxxAuto.pkg” is stored on Apple’s servers and is a standalone installer package. Once downloaded, all you need to do is install the pkg and Safari will be updated. You can use this pkg to reinstall Safari if you are having issues. Make sure that you download the correct version of Safari for your OS. For macOS Ventura, Safari is included in all updates.

NOTE #1 : I strongly recommend using the Software Update pane or softwareupdate binary to update Safari. Use the stand alone pkg as a last resort before reinstalling macOS.

NOTE #2: You can not use a previous Safari stand alone package to downgrade to a previous version of Safari.

NOTE#3: Apple usually only keeps 2 versions of Safari in the software update catalog. The current version and one behind. When a new version is released, the 3rd download link is removed.

Safari 16.5.2 has serious issues.

When I updated Safari to version 16.5.2, I encountered abnormal image display on certain web pages, as shown in the attached image.

However, when I reinstalled the operating system (Monterey 12.6.6/Safari 15.6.1), the images on web pages returned to normal and the speed noticeably improved.

Could it be due to last Rapid Response Update (security patches) ?

Read here: https://www.macrumors.com/2023/07/12/apple-releases-revised-security-updates/

It doesn't seem to be the case because my operating system is Monterey. Thank you.

Yes indeed. But I don't know whether or not security patch also applied to 12.6.7 (as an evolution from 12.6.6)

Apple releases iOS 16.5 beta 2 to developers, here's what's new

iOS 16.5 beta 2 is now available to those enrolled in Apple's Developer Program. Here's what's new in this version and how to update to it.

While we bid iOS 16 farewell and prepare for iOS 17 's WWDC23 beta debut, Apple is still stabilizing the iPhone's OS by seeding minor 16.X updates. With iOS 16.4 finally launching publicly, the company has started working on the next bump. iOS 16.5 beta 2 is now available to those enrolled in Apple's Developer Program. So, what's new in this updated version, and how to download it? Let's find out.

What's new in iOS 16.5 beta 2

Complete retirement of beta profiles.

With iOS and iPadOS 16.4, Apple retired beta profiles on iPhones and iPads in favor of a new toggle in the Settings app. iOS 16.5 beta 2 and watchOS 9.5 beta 2 now introduce this behavior on the Apple Watch. So going forward, you will have to enable beta watchOS updates through the new toggle in the Watch app on your iPhone, rather than a watchOS beta profile. This behavior has also expanded to the Mac through macOS Ventura 13.4 beta 2.

We're currently digging through iOS 16.5 beta 2 to uncover the other new changes it may offer. Though, considering we're approaching the end of iOS 16's cycle, there's a high chance that this build doesn't pack any other new major features or additions. We will update this article if we find anything else of interest in this particular release. In the meantime, you can read Apple's Release Notes , where the company usually lists some of the bug fixes and patches included in an iOS beta.

Screen recording via Siri

iOS 16.5 beta 1 allows users to start and end a screen recording session by simply asking Siri. Prior to this, users had to manually tap the dedicated toggle in the Control Center.

Sports tab in Apple News

iOS 16.5 beta 1 merges the Following and Search tabs of the News app to make space for an all-new Sports tab. The new Sports tab includes news and scores revolving around a user's assigned favorite teams.

If you have enrolled in the iOS 16 developer beta program, you can update your compatible iPhone to iOS 16.5 beta 2 by following the steps below:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Head to the General section.
  • Tap on Software Update .
  • Give the page a few second to refresh.
  • The update will then appear.
  • Tap on Download and install .
  • Agree to the Terms of Service, after reading them thoroughly and carefully.
  • Make sure your iPhone is connected to a power source until the update finishes downloading and installing.
  • You're now running iOS 16.5 beta 2.

Do note that beta profiles are no longer compatible with iOS and iPadOS beta updates as of version 16.4. So make sure your Apple ID is subscribed to Apple's Developer Program in order to take advantage of iOS beta updates on day one. Alternatively, you could join the public beta program for free and receive these prerelease updates a day or so later.

Safari 16.5.2 crashes when I enter 'san' in the address field

My Safari version 16.5.2 running on BigSur 11.7.8 will crash reproducibly whenever I type 'san' into the address field.

Application Specific Information:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[NSCache setObject:forKey:cost:]: attempt to insert nil value (key: wi: https://www.santander.co.uk/)'

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

My workaround is to disable the 'Include Safari suggestions' in Preferences > Search > Smart Search Field

I saw this was reported before for other two characters combinations, so maybe you want to test if my workaround helps you too.
