Beyoncé and Jay-Z Officially Announce the “On the Run II” Tour

Image may contain Human Person Fashion Sunglasses Accessories Accessory Clothing and Apparel

This not a drill: Beyoncé and Jay-Z are officially going on tour together, for "On the Run II.” It will be the first time since the first “On the Run” series brought the superpower couple together to perform songs from Beyoncé and Magna Carta Holy Grail. The two announced the tour on Beyoncé’s Instagram account, in photos and a video emblazoned with the letters “OTR II.” In one photo, Bey rides on the back of a motorcycle driven by Jay, with a steer’s skull placed on the handlebars, and in the video Jay wears a bandanna, keeping in line with the duo’s recent Coachella-themed Instagram photoshoots (as well as the “On the Run” vibe).

A joint tour has been rumored for months and was all but leaked last week when a tour date in Philadelphia was posted on Facebook and Ticketmaster then quickly deleted. Now do we know for certain that America’s king and queen will be gracing us with their joint presence. Tickets go on sale Monday, March 19, and shows will kick off on Wednesday, June 6, starting in Cardiff, Wales. A 21-date North American tour starts July 25 in Cleveland.

On The Run Tour

  • View history

On the Run Tour poster

The On the Run Tour is a co-headlining stadium tour by Beyoncé and husband Jay Z . The tour followed the completion of Beyoncé and Jay Z's solo tours,  Mrs. Carter Show World Tour The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour (2013-2014) and the Magna Carter World Tour (2013-2014), respectively.

The tour name is inspired by the duo's 2013 song " Part II (On the Run) ", which appears on Jay Z's album  Magna Carta Holy Grail . The official tour poster features Beyoncé and Jay Z wearing black ski masks, a nod to their 2002 first single together, " '03 Bonnie & Clyde " and "Part II (On the Run)", which is the continuation to the former.

To promote the tour, a faux movie trailer video was premiered in May 2014 entitled "Run" (stylized as "RUN"). The video, filled with multiple celebrity cameos, features the couple in a variety of Bonnie and Clyde style, action and gun packed situations. The tour itself was noted to follow this same theme throughout, with similar video interludes incorporated into the production of the show. Critics generally lauded the tour, praising the extravagant set list, dynamic and detailed theme and story of the show and both artists performance abilities, however some felt the on stage chemistry between the couple was not what it could have been. Due to the large demand and tickets selling out in minutes in multiple locations, extra tour dates were added to the itinerary. Commercially, the tour was a success, grossing over $100 million in the first 19 North American shows alone, as well as attendance topping 850,000. The tour is set to broadcast in its entirety on September 20, 2014, airing on the US television network HBO , following the scheduled taping of the two concerts in Paris , France , where the tour will conclude.

Development [ ]

The tour was "conceived and launched fast compared to most stadium tours" according to Live Nation, who noted that most tours of this nature take more than a year of planning. "It came together quite quickly, around mid-March," Omar Al-Joulani of Live Nation North America commented. "By April, we had everything together, and once the routing was in place we had about three weeks until the tour was announced." Following the general sale of tour dates, fans were left concerned as the July 11, 2014 show in East Rutherford , New Jersey remained pending to go on sale for many weeks, despite all other dates already being available to the public. Some reports stated that the reason for this was that the state of New Jersey had implemented a legislation resulting in 95% of tickets for an event having to be available to the public. The show was eventually put on sale to the public on June 4, 2014. The On the Run Tour was the first tour to be a part of "Official Events" – the collaboration of Facebook and Live Nation in which the size and scale of Ticketmaster's database is leveraged as events promoted by Live Nation are imported to Artists' Facebook Pages as "Official Events", providing fans with direct links to Ticketmaster to purchase verified tickets.

The tour was stated to have a running theme throughout the performances of being "on the run" by the Miami New Times , whether it is from "the media, their place in pop music, the haters , the bullshit and sometimes even each other". During their individual performances, Beyoncé was often backed by both male and female dancers, however Jay-Z was noted to hold the stage for multiple songs without assistance. Beyoncé was backed by an all female band during her solo songs, whilst Jay-Z was accompanied by other male instrumentalists, however both artist's musicians collaborated for the majority of the performance. Video interludes filled with "cop chases and other violent outbursts" carried the storytelling between songs. The performances of the joint tour was said to be split up similarly to Jay-Z's previous joint venture with Kanye West , the Watch the Throne Tour . Beyoncé and Jay-Z would take turn holding down the stage, with "a couple Beyonce tracks here, sharing the spotlight for some duets and then Jay having his turn to run through rap classics." Both artists sported multiple outfits from a variety of fashion designers throughout the performances of the tour. In Beyoncé's case, makeup artist Sir John Barnette commented on her quick changes backstage between performances, comparing them to "the Daytona 500 , when the cars come in and they have to hurry up and change the wheels in, like, twenty seconds. When she comes back, everyone is grabbing a piece of her."

Broadcasts and Recordings [ ]

In July 2014, it was announced that HBO would exclusively air the On the Run Tour in full at some point in September, following the upcoming filming of the concerts in Paris , France at the scheduled September 12 and 13, 2014 shows in the city. The shows will be shot by music video director Jonas Akerlund , whom has directed numerous music videos for both Knowles and Jay-Z. [1] President of the network Michael Lombardo stated in a press release "This is a major musical event that belongs on HBO, it's going to be a night to remember." [2] Following the announcement of the upcoming airing of the tour, a promotional trailer was released on HBO's official YouTube channel, showing professional footage and segments of the On the Run Tour. [3] On July 22, 2014, Beyoncé confirmed the air date of the special to be September 20, 2014, on her official Facebook page, along with another short video trailer. [4]

In August 2014, another promotional video was uploaded to HBO's official YouTube account. The trailer began with Beyoncé dressed as a jazz singer staring down a captive Jay-Z in the audience, whilst singing Nancy Sinatra 's cover version of " Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) ". The trailer then cuts to footage of live performances from the On the Run Tour, featuring Beyoncé and Jay-Z interacting. [5] HBO will be using 20 different cameras to record the two shows.

The eagles announce “the long goodbye” – the band’s final tour.

"The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.  So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

With love and gratitude, The Eagles

After more than 50 years of touring, and consistently selling out arenas and stadiums worldwide, the Eagles will embark on their final tour, “The Long Goodbye”.

Presale tickets and VIP packages will be available starting Wednesday, July 12 for all announced shows. The general on-sale will start Friday, July 14 at 10:00 AM local time.

Funko is Heading Cross-Country For Their 25th Anniversary [Exclusive]

Shop new funko pops inspired by 'succession', check out funko and loungefly's new disney lineup launching at c2e2 [exclusive], funko pop yourself into a dunking inspired by ben affleck's dunkin' commercial, shop halloween-inspired funko pops: horror movies, hocus pocus, more.

Are you ready for some fun on the run? Funko is! As Decider can exclusively reveal, the big-head, no-mouths company is getting ready for their 25th anniversary with a stunt-filled, cross-country tour called Fun on the Run, as just announced at the company’s 2022 Press and Investors Event. And not only that, but the event will be filmed over the course of 2023 to potentially be rolled out as a documentary on the company’s explosive growth.

“In celebration of Funko’s connection with fans for the last 25 years, we are excited to bring the fun directly to them for the first time in our history,” Dave Beré, Vice President of Brand & Marketing at Funko, said in a release provided to Decider. “Fans of all ages will be able to participate in this milestone moment right in their hometown, while shopping localized Funko merchandise, only available during our 2023 tour.”

To boil it down, here’s the gist: starting in June, 2023, a Funko truck (a rendering of which is below) will travel cross-country to 25 different locations in conjunction with a major retailer TBA, bringing a “carnival-like experience” to fans at each stop on the “Fun on the Run” tour. In addition, this will be the only place to get a limited edition, first-come, first-serve “Box of Fun,” which is usually a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive. As you can probably guess the “Box of Fun” is a collection of limited-edition Funko products, potentially including items from their omnipresent Pop!s line, among other items. The whole event will culminate in the final stop, at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con in July (the dates are currently scheduled for July 19-23, 2023).

Though details other than this are minimal at the moment, there’s no entry fee to participate in “Fun on the Run,” and the locations of the stops and additional details will be available over the next few months on Funko.com, as well as at the company’s social outlets. And as for the documentary, details are TBD, but this isn’t the first time Funko has documented their journey from tiny toy company to global powerhouse: in 2017, the company released Making Fun: The Story of Funko … So consider this the long-awaited sequel. Sort of.

Check out a look at the Fun on the Run truck, below, followed by a Q&A with Beré on the event:

Decider: This is a fun announcement and obviously a big project for Funko. I was just curious where the idea started.

Dave Beré: So we have an incredible, world class creative team, and we’re always brainstorming new ways to engage with our fan base. We’ve had a ton of success with events and they’ve primarily been on the two coasts. The East Coast, who’ve been in New York, we’re in the Southern California market. And one of the ideas that came out of the brainstorm was: what if we met fans where they are? What if we got off the coast? What does that look like? And I think you’ll see more of that from us as we move into next year. But that’s really how this idea came to life, all about meeting fans where they are.

We did Funkon last year where we did a tented experience that led into our Hollywood store, which was a great fan engagement moment. And so we have a little bit of a model there that we can take as we think about meeting fans where they are, going across the country. We’re really excited about that piece. And that’s really at the heart of it, meeting fans where they are, getting off the coast, in an additive way; we’re not taking anything away from those experiences that we currently have. But it’s just a new way for us to try new things and meet fans where they live.

The release mentions a carnival-like atmosphere. So my assumption is beyond the truck, there’s going to be more activations around that?

Yes. We are still working through exactly what that’s going to be, but that’s a key part of it. We want it to not just be, “Hey, come purchase product from the truck.” This has been really how we’ve handled events for a few years now, but we need to drive the experience. And for us, that is going to mean activities outside of just purchasing from the truck, different photo moments. We want it to be inclusive, too. So not something that you have to make a purchase to get in this experience. We’re hopeful that this is some something that, if someone just was walking into said retailer store, they could just join in on the fun and not have to have a ticket. We’re still working through exactly the product purchasing piece and how we do that for fans. But absolutely, we want this to be inclusive experience full of experience moments.

The Box of Fun was a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive… Now that you’re bringing it on the road and giving it out at least at 25 locations, is there an idea to make the eventual San Diego Comic-Con version a little more special, a little more different? Or is it more about having this month-long celebration?

They are going to be different. So this isn’t going to take the place of the box that we do around our Fundays event, that is very special for our fans. But as we look through the assortment of the types of product that we want, our fans engage with, they’re going to be very different.

This one is going to be very focused on our 25th anniversary, which is another piece of this. Next year’s our 25th anniversary as a company. This moment is going to kick off a back half the year campaign around that. So this particular box should be extra special for fans, because it’s focused on that. And then obviously, we’re working through all our plans for Fundays next year, and the themes that tie into that, and that will still be very unique and very special to that event.

There’s talk of potentially having some sort of documentary around this… What can you tell me about that, if anything?

We think this is a big brand moment for us. We think it’s an innovative way to look at driving experience through events and we want to capture it. So yes, there are plans to document this, not just in the form of something that can be celebrated like a documentary after the event, but also in real time. I think this is going to be one of our lead brand messages as “Follow Funko across the country,” as we lead into the SDCC moment. From a content perspective, we’re having a lot of fun with the ideation around that, what that means for our social channels, but then how we can celebrate that after the fact. Absolutely, we’re looking at that and we plan to bring a crew along with us to capture in real time.

This is a big, broad question and you’ve touched on it a little bit already, but what does it mean to have the 25th anniversary of Funko?

It’s huge. I’ve only been here three and a half years, worked in with Funko indirectly longer than that. And even in the years that I’ve known it, how much this brand means to people as we’ve developed new product, as our community’s gotten bigger… It’s crazy to think about that we still have fanatics who were with Mike Becker in, first of all in 1998, who are still at the company, which is awesome. And then we also have fanatics who started collecting the early Wacky Wobblers, who are still showing up at SDCC and still engaging with us. So to see how we still have that and how the fan base has grown and evolved to what it is today, it means a ton. Because ultimately our fan and what we care about is that community, is our fan base. So seeing it, thinking it through their lens, I think it is going to be a pretty powerful moment. And we want to make sure that we can celebrate it in the right way through different engagement points, life Fun on the Run, but also through product which is all still in development.

Run the Jewels is the hip-hop super-duo of New York, US based rapper/producer El-P and Atlanta, US, based rapper Killer Mike, forming the group in 2013 following the success of prior collaborations.

The pair first started working together in 2012, with El-P producing Killer Mike’s sixth studio album, “R.A.P. Music,” which was released on Williams Street Records. The album was a massive critical success, praised for Killer Mike’s ambitious and powerful lyrics, as well as the ever impressive production from El-P. Their partnership continued that year, when Killer Mike contributed vocals to El-P’s third album, “Cancer 4 Cure,” appearing on the song, “Tougher Colder Killer.”

Off the strength of these collaborations, El-P and Killer Mike decided to form Run The Jewels, signing to Fool’s Gold Records in 2013. They released their eponymous debut in June 2013, releasing it for free as a digital download. It was released in Europe on Big Dada Recordings. The album was a huge success, with many media outlets considering it to be the best hip-hop album of the year, with this partnership establishing a new force in the world of hip-hop.

In October 2014, Run The Jewels returned with their second album, “Run the Jewels 2,” released through Mass Appeal Records. The album again set a new bar for contemporary hip-hop and received widespread critical acclaim. The band jokingly offered to create a remix album of their second release made up entirely of cat sounds for $40,000. Soon after, a fan started a Kickstarter campaign which quickly raised $65,000 for the project, forcing the duo to follow through with promise to create “Meow the Jewels."

Live reviews

This was an amazing show, dj qbert was there and I had no idea he was going to be there and he absolutely killed it, his scratching was virtuosic, the way he deftly switched up beats endlessly impressive and the beats on display positively nasty. Flatbush Zombies came on next and were very impressive, their vocal performances were full of energy and they sounded great. Zombie Juice's crazy dynamic rumble of a voice had so much range and his companions, meechy darko and Erick arc Elliot were tight. The crowd was feeling it and started moshing. Then run the Jewels came on and my review of them is unneeded as I assume you all know that they are amazing seasoned hip hop performers. Killer Mike and El-P's vocals were amazing and El-P's beats were played and occasionally scratched by a DJ, with beats as sublime as his he doesn't really need to noodle with them onstage. Both FBZ and RTJ were completely unplagued by the audio muddiness that seems to prevale most hip hop concerts, these crews sound completely clear and every lyric is audible, which is something that is commendable and a testament to their skills as emcees.

Killer Mike and EL-P were awesome.

but the venue was not good. i have been to other concerts here & the downfalls are:

poor acoustics: these guys are super talented artists who put their heart & soul into every line, beat, scratch, & composition of what they do. To have their well crafted show sound like its bouncing around inside a rubber ball is a let down as fan.

show time constraint: from what I have been told, their is a curfew on live music in this area (Vancouver, you want good artists attracted to come and play here? get your shit together & change some stupid bylaws). so the rush a concert to end before 11pm feels like grade 7 dances being cut short & November Rain only played 1/2 way through.

huge props to run the jewels: thanks for a memorable show u three, whether another record comes out or not in the future, you guys made hip hop alive again for me: to put out thought provoking lyrics combined with beats worthy of replay on any GOOD hip hop station is what rap has been missing for a long time.

My 2 Cents: SD

American Hip Hop duo, Run the Jewels perform live at the Boiler Room with their original hip-hop fused with a sort of EDM, rapping at impressive speed. I’ve immediately got to acknowledge how much I’m enjoying this atmosphere both EI-P and Killer Mike, smiling and laughing through their set not taking themselves too seriously. They are so impressively tight and have developed such a large following for the short time that they have been together. It’s also fantastic to see such an adventurous scratching solo from their DJ who absolutely nails it, earning such a fantastic reaction from this audience, myself included. They are definitely a hip-hop duo that I could really get behind and support, through their career. They released their self titled first album “Run the Jewels” as a free digital download, which really built up their following over the last year. It’s no surprise that they are going back into the studio to record another.

One of the best shows I've ever been to! Run The Jewels at Metro was awesome! El-P and Killer Mike play off each other perfectly, definitely a dynamic duo. Dope beats, thanks to El-P's excellent production. High energy performances from both MCs, and after the show as I was leaving Smart bar, the club next to the Metro, I wanted to take a picture of the marquee but it had already been changed for the next night's show. Instead I got something better, the RTJ tour bus was outside, took a picture of that and when I look to my left there was El-P chilling with some people. I went up to him, told him I was huge fan since '98 when I first heard Company Flow, he gave me a pound and took a cool picture with me. Great show, great night, great artists, cool dude.

Phenomenal show!

RTJ has amazing stage presence and know how to work a crowd and get everyone hyped for an amazing show.

Bits between songs were both comical and thought provoking - pretty much what you’d expect from a RTJ concert. It made for a brilliantly personal show - it felt as if I got to know the real El-P and Killer Mike much better.

The quality of the performance itself was amazing and it was nice to see that they brought BOOTS and Danny Brown our for their features on 2100 and Hey Kids (both of which were great).

Also nice that they turned the base up for their final song: ‘A Christmas F**king Miracle’.

Overall a 10/10 night.

Great live show, constant energy, extreme positivity coming from Mike & El. The songs are fantastic anthems for a crowd to get behind, with incredible lyricism that is very fast yet understandable at a live show. I don't know how they write, deliver AND memorize all those verses.

The show was so good I bought another ticket to see them 2 nights later.

One of the opening acts (Rick Hood, DJ) was pretty underwhelming and unprofessional but the other three (Cuzz Lightyear, Gangsta Boo and Gaslamp Killer) were phenomenal and incredibly entertaining.

RTJ was amazing. They are so electrifying on stage and they sound so much like they do in studio which is a sign of a phenomenal artist. I will see them again, guaranteed. There was never a dull moment.

Oh my god, I want to be at this show for the rest of my life. I go to a lot of shows, far more shows than the normal person, and this is probably my favorite to date. These guys are incredible, they come to stage with so much energy you can't help but get in to it. I'm just sad the concert ended. If you ever get a chance to see Run The Jewels, don't even think twice, DO IT.

I was really looking forward to this performance, however due to lack of information on the event's website & Facebook page, I was unable to attend. This isn't Run the Jewels' fault, just a poorly organized event. RTJ kick ass, glad I saw them at FYF since New Noise couldn't be bothered to update set times until late Sunday afternoon.

dorothy-clementine’s profile image

Tons of energy. Crowd loved it, they did an encore, they couldn't have been any better. Hard to do hip hop much better than that. A lot of the energy came from their last opener, Boots, but either way, what a show. Definitely recommend seeing RTJ if you're into rap music. El-P and Killer Mike put on one hell of a show.
