Something That Can Be Spun

Joe Marquez’s theme is about my favorite type of puzzle.

A black-and-white photo of Sybil Mary sitting at a spinning wheel with her three fluffy, white Angora rabbits around her.

By Deb Amlen

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

THURSDAY PUZZLE — The following is simply my thoughts about today’s puzzle. As always, your mileage may vary.

After solving crosswords for many years, I’ve come to the realization that, even when I come across a puzzle that is perfectly enjoyable, there is probably a similar one I’ve already solved that was — I don’t want to say “better,” just closer to what I had hoped for in today’s theme.

That’s the problem with having a lot of grids under one’s belt. You start to compare them. And I try very hard not to do that. Sometimes I fail.

Joe Marquez’s theme is tight and impressive, but it’s just not the May 29, 2011 , puzzle by Tony Orbach and Jeremy Newton ( Here’s the Wordplay column if you’re interested.) It didn’t have exactly the same theme, but the mechanics of Mr. Orbach and Mr. Newton’s crossword were exemplary and turned the solve into something that felt alive. Of course, the 2011 puzzle was a 21x21 Sunday, so there was more room to play around with design. But something like that in Mr. Marquez’s similarly themed puzzle would have really elevated it.

Maybe this is just me, but if you’re going to make a puzzle about this topic, and it runs on a Thursday — the day that is more likely to contain a trick than others — I feel as if there should be some sort of interactive feature to solve it.

I liked Mr. Marquez’s puzzle, and if I were a new solver I would have been happy with it. But that’s the downside of experience: I have the solving skills, but I also know what’s possible.

Today’s Theme

There are four rebus squares in Mr. Marquez’s puzzle that represent escape rooms, in that each square contains the letters ESC.

The rebuses work for both the Across and Down entries. For example, at 17A, the “Awkward period, for many” is MIDDL[E SC]HOOL, and that crosses with 6D’s TR[ÈS C]HIC, which is clued as “‘Ooh-la-la!’”

The revealer, at 54A, ESCAPE ROOM, is clued as “Puzzling activity, as seen four times in this puzzle?”

Live escape rooms are fun to do with friends, but I also enjoy solving them online. My favorite site for online escape games is Nordinho.net .

Tricky Clues

14A. The “Apt key for a musical prodigy?” is A MINOR because a prodigy’s talent is discovered as a child.

16A. A TALE is “Something that can be spun.” I’ve heard that it’s easier to spin a tale if it’s a tall one.

19A. This was probably tough for younger solvers. In fact, I asked the members of the Games team, most of whom are substantially younger than I am, if they knew who ARTE Johnson was. The majority of them did not, and that is why I am currently sitting in the corner, swigging from a bottle of Geritol .

However, if you were a child of 1960s or ’70s television or you just love comic entertainment and its history the way I do, then this was a no-brainer: ARTE Johnson was one of the co-stars of the NBC show “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.”

24A. Straight from the department of dad jokes comes the clue “Part of your body that smells the most?” The answer is NOSTRIL. This, of course, is an offshoot of an older joke:

First person: My dog’s got no nose. Second person: How does he smell? First person: Awful.

36A. The “Housing projects?” in this puzzle are EAVES because they overhang, or project out of, a house.

37A. If something is “Ordered,” or orderly, it is NEAT.

43A. The clue “Front of the bus?” is hinting at a prefix for “-bus.” In this puzzle, the answer is OMNI, as in “omnibus.”

4D. This “Stub, say” is not a verb. It’s a noun, and it’s the END of a ticket.

32D. When I read the clue “Round sandwich,” I was thinking about a savory lunch. This one, however, is an OREO, also known as a sandwich cookie.

Constructor Notes

Is it a stretch to compare individual crossword squares to ROOMS? Probably, but that didn’t stop me from turning my puzzling hobby of escape rooms into my second puzzling hobby of crosswords. As a solver, I never get tired of rebus puzzles, so I’m glad I could get one accepted into The New York Times! For a short insidE SCoop into the construction of this puzzle: Because of the sheer number of interesting phrases that contain ESC, I went through several drafts of this puzzle, using many different themed entries and grid patterns. At one point, I even experimented with an oversize grid. Some of my favorite phrases that I couldn’t include were JOE SCHMO, BATTLE SCARS, ICE SCULPTURE and COUPLE’S COSTUME. The final draft I settled on before submitting to The Times is the one before you.
