Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Thailand - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

The beaches make it worth visiting Thailand

Exotic, amazing, enchanting. Mere words cannot describe the joy of visiting one of the beautiful and exciting countries in Asia. The presence of numerous islands and two coastlines ensures a holiday in Thailand to be filled with various beaches. From crowded cosmopolitan beaches to secluded tropical getaways, you can really satiate your desires for the perfect beach holiday here.  Thailand is a country that has something for everyone. Whether you’re traveling alone, as a couple or with your family, a trip to Thailand will have all the right options to customize your itinerary and add attractions that suit your tastes and preferences.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary just outside Chiang Mai
  • Snorkel with the fish in Maya Bay
  • Take a boat ride from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands and Monkey Beach
  • Climb the 300 intricately carved steps to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple
  • Take in panoramic views from the seat of Big Buddha in Kron, Phuket
  • Float from vendor to vendor at Bangkok’ s floating markets
  • Swim beneath the waterfalls of Erawan National Park
  • Thailand’s glittery beaches are one of its biggest charms, but those golden temples are equally worthy of your time.

Travel Tips

  • The most fun way to get around Thailand is by tuk-tuk, which offers fantastic views along the way. Most of these open-air ‘taxis’ are blue and have three wheels, except for the red tuk-tuks of Phuket (some of which have sound systems and neon lights).
  • When visiting holy sites, be sure to bring a shawl so you can cover up your shoulders and knees. Also be prepared to remove your shoes before entering a temple or person’s home.
  • The most common greeting in Thailand is to bring your hands together in a prayer-like fashion and bow, accompanied with a “Sawatdee-kah” for males or a “Sawatdee-krap” for females. Be sure to return this gesture as a show of respect.
  • Thai people are extremely friendly and generous. Don’t be surprised if a local starts to strike up a random conversation, particularly in the markets.
  • Make your visit to Thailand is an ethical one. Research whether a tour company’s practices are socially responsible, particularly if visiting elephants or hill tribes.

Thailand has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Thailand before planning your tour.

Tours in Thailand - Questions and Answers

With a laid-back way of life and extraordinary cultural heritages, the shortest amount of time you should plan for any trip to Thailand is one week . In seven days, you can admire the golden pagodas of Bangkok and Ayutthaya, and choose to either kick back on the tropical beaches of the country’s south or head out to discover its northern tribal villages. However, if you were to ask us how long to spend in Thailand , we would recommend staying in the country for two weeks , since this gives you the chance to tick off most of the country’s bucket-list destinations at a leisurely pace. If you cannot make your stay last that long, then ten days make for a good compromise. If you're looking for the best Thailand tours and trips, you can find them here .

The best time to visit Thailand is between the months of November and March, which also coincides with the country’s high season. The weather is comparatively colder during this time of year, making it ideal to explore the country. If you want to avoid crowds, then make sure that you head for the country  in October. Please bear in mind that although the official monsoon season peaks in August and September, parts of the country continue receiving rainfall all through October, which puts most people off from visiting the country during this month. You can find more information here .

A western European or North American visitor to Thailand will find it one of the best countries in the world to visit on a budget . With street food and budget accommodation both keenly priced, USD 40 per person per day should cover accommodation and meal costs for frugal travelers. However, book organized tours and stay in middle to higher-range hotels and you will be looking at a daily budget of around USD 60 to USD 120 per person, per day. ATMs are widespread and operate exactly as they would at home – with English-language options.

Most western visitors do not require a visa to visit Thailand for a short term as tourists. Stays cannot be more than 30 days in one go and a total of 90 days within a six-month period. You will require a passport with at least six months remaining from your date of entry, alongside a return air ticket and proof that you have the equivalent of just over USD 600 to fund your stay. These details can be requested by customs officials on entry into the country.

The most widely spoken language in the country is Thai (Siamese), which also has its own alphabet. This can make it difficult for western travelers to communicate with the locals in the beginning. However, many Thai people also speak or understand a good amount of English, especially those living in large cities such as Bangkok, because of the language’s international importance. Few in the country expect visitors to speak any Thai, although any attempt to do so will bring smiles on the faces of those you are talking to.

The heart and soul of Thailand, Bangkok is an unmissable destination and makes for a logical first stop as it is also home to the country’s main international airport. Among the top things to do in Bangkok are visiting the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and exploring the royal palace in the city. Beach lovers will not want to miss a trip to Ko Samui and the Phi Phi Islands, while a tour to Chiang Mai is a must for anyone interested in history and culture. For ancient wonders, look no further than the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayutthaya . Head for Krabi if you are looking for a great mix of beach vibes and snorkeling adventures.

The memories of drifting down the muddy waters of the Mekong is sure to stay with you for years to come, while island hopping from Phuket or Krabi is another must while in the country. The tropical islands that pepper the Gulf of Thailand have been used as a shooting spot for everything from James Bond movies to ‘The Beach’. For a completely different perspective of the country, head to the north, where traditional tribal villages are located amid deep jungle and towering hills that are worth exploring. For history lovers, there are Khmer ruins waiting to be explored at Phanom Rung Historical Park along with the famous bridge on the River Kwai.

Thailand’s road network is well developed and the country’s public transport will take you almost anywhere at an inexpensive price. This is another reason why budget travelers love this country. Thailand also has more than 2,500 miles of railway, running from the border with Malaysia in the south to destinations like Chiang Mai in the north. Both are a great value for money, although neither buses nor trains are the fastest or the most comfortable means of travel. For this, you are better off organizing a car and a driver to take you from one destination to another.

Thailand travel reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

Day 2: Bangkok

thailand tour 2022

After breakfast our tour director hosts an orientation meeting and then we'll embark on a tour to some of Bangkok's most outstanding Buddhist temples. Buddhism is practiced by more than 94% of the country and is central to understanding Thai culture. We'll see the White Marble Temple, one of the finest example of Thai architecture; and Wat Po with its colossal 150-foot long "Reclining Buddha." Next, we'll visit the former residence of the Kings, the Grand Palace. The mile-square palace grounds feature some of the most beautiful examples of ancient Siamese architecture including the Temple of the "Emerald Buddha". The rest of our day is free to rest and relax, or consider joining an optional tour!

Day 3: Thai Markets & Sugar Palm Farm Excursion

floating market thailand

Early this morning we'll leave for the Mae Klong Railway Market. As the name suggests, this market sits on a railway and whenever a train approaches, we can expect to see a flurry of activity as baskets of wares are moved and awnings come down so the train can travel right through the heart of the market. Next, we'll drive to the colorful floating market of Damneon Saduak where we'll watch merchants sell food, produce, baskets and more from their boats. Before we return to Bangkok, we'll stop at a sugar palm farm where we can sample the local area's delights. We'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant as we make our way back to Bangkok. This evening, consider a optional Pearl Dinner Cruise.

Day 4: Bangkok – Ayutthaya – Phitsanulok

thailand tour 2022

Today we'll explore the ancient temple ruins and crumbling pagodas of Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand. We'll see some of the city's former glory in the giant bronze statue of Wat Mongkol Borpith and the three ancient pagodas of Wat Phra Sri. Next, is Wat Mahathat, "the Temple of the Great Relic" which was once one of the kingdom's most important temples. Here we'll see the sandstone Buddha that has become entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree. After our visit, our journey continues past beautiful rice paddies as we drive to Phitsanulok, the gateway to northern Thailand. After check in, we are free to relax for the rest of the day or might consider joining an optional tour to a local market.

Day 5: Phitsanulok – Sukhothai – Lampang

thailand tour 2022

Before leaving Phitsanulok this morning, we'll stop at the famous Buddha Foundry where bronze Buddha images are cast in the increasingly rare traditional way with wax molds and molten bronze. The highlight of our day awaits us in Sukhothai. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. Next, we'll visit its sister city, Sri Satchanalai where we'll stop at a privately-owned textile Museum. The private collection featured here includes antique and handwoven textiles including a gold sarong (or pha-sin) from the royal court of Keng Tung. Afterward, we'll continue to our Lampang hotel.

Day 6: Lampang – Chiang Mai

thailand tour 2022

This morning, we'll visit the Saa Paper Community Project. We'll have the chance to create our own souvenirs and our visit supports this local project dedicated to preserving traditional methods used make mulberry bark paper that have been passed down from generation to generation. Our next visit takes us to Dhanabaadee Ceramic Museum, where we'll discover the evolution of ceramic-making and watch local artisans craft the traditional "chicken bowl." We'll continue to Chiang Mai where the rest of the day is free to relax or explore. We might consider joining an optional Khantoke dinner this evening.

Day 7: Chiang Mai

thailand tour 2022

Today we'll meet Thailand's beloved national animal, the elephant, with a full-day visit to the Elephant Nature Park. This sanctuary isn't just for elephants—it's home to buffalo, dogs, cats, birds, and many other rescued animals. We'll hear the personal stories of the rescued elephants, learn how they've come together to create a new herd free from abuse, often for the first time in their lives, and enjoy the sight of the free roaming elephants and other rescued animals in the natural surroundings of this sanctuary. Our visit supports elephant conservation in the region and allows us to slow down and learn from these majestic creatures.

Day 8: Chiang Mai

thailand tour 2022

Today takes us to the revered mountainside temple of Doi Suthep. Each year, Buddhist pilgrims journey to the temple on foot which can take six to eight hours! We'll skip the challenging trek and drive up the winding road instead. From our drop off point, we can choose to scale the 300 steps of the beautifully carved Naga Serpent Staircase, or ride the cable car to the summit. We'll explore the temple's beautiful architecture, statues, murals, and shrines—all of which are nothing short of breathtaking. Tonight, we'll enjoy a cooking class and delicious dinner experience together. After our cooking experience, we'll enjoy an authentic meal together followed by a traditional herb drink!

Day 9: Chiang Mai – Hmong Hill Tribe

thailand tour 2022

After breakfast at our hotel, we'll drive north to the Mae Rim area. On the way, we'll stop to explore the lush Araksa Tea Garden where we'll learn about the age-old traditions and tea growing processes. We'll enjoy a home-style lunch made from locally sourced and organic produce before we continue to the Hmong Hilltribe Lodge. This resort offers us a unique opportunity to experience Hmong culture in the scenic valley of the Suthep-Pui mountain range. This afternoon, we might consider an optional hike to visit villages further afield with experienced guides.

Day 10: Hmong Hill Tribe – Mae Kok – Chiang Rai

Wat Rong Khun

This morning we'll drive north to Chiang Rai via the Wiang Pa Pao. En route, we'll stop at Mae Krachan Hotspring where we can relax and soak our feet in one of the steamy pools and boil an egg in the natural springs! Our drive continues to Wat Rongkun, or the White Temple, one of Thailand's most recognizable temples, and then to Wat Huay Plakang. We'll have an unforgettable visit with the Karen Hilltribe at Baan Ruam Mid. Here, this minority group maintains their distinct culture, religion, and language by passing them down from generation to generation. After out visit, we'll board a longtail boat for a ride up the Mae Kok River to Chiang Rai where we'll check into our hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Note: If temperatures are too warm to visit the hotspring, the group will visit a café at Wiang Pa Pao.

Day 11: Chiang Rai

thailand tour 2022

Today we'll drive through the narrow and scenic roads to Doi Tung Mountain, home to many local hilltribe communities. In fact, Doi Tung coffee is one of Thailand's most famous coffee brands. Next, we'll visit the Doi Tung Palace, Mae Fah Luang Garden, and then the Hall of Opium which is dedicated to portraying every angle of the opium story from its origin, the wars, the drug smugglers, the battle against growing, and the rehabilitation of the people in this former worldwide drug trading zone. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Chiang Rai.

What travelers say about their Thailand tours

Travel tips for thailand trips.

Thailand uses the Thai baht, abbreviated as THB or ฿.

The country’s official language is Thai, also known as Central Thai. Additionally, several regional dialects and minority languages are spoken in Thailand. These include Isan (Northeastern Thai), Kam Mueang (Northern Thai), and Dambro (Southern Thai). English is widely understood in tourist areas. However, learning a few basic Thai phrases goes a long way. “Thank you” (khob khun kha/krap, with the last word changing according to gender and “excuse me” (kho thot) are always appreciated.

Thailand has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, but its weather can be broadly divided into three seasons:

  • Rainy season (May-October). This time of year brings frequent afternoon showers, high humidity, and flourishing greenery. Temperatures stay warm, typically between 80-90 F. While storms can disrupt outdoor plans, they tend to be brief and followed by sunshine.
  • Cool season (November-February). This is considered the peak tourist season due to its pleasant weather. Temperatures are cooler and more comfortable, ranging from 70-80 F. Furthermore, rainfall is minimal, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
  • Hot season (March-April). This is the hottest and driest time of year in Thailand. Sunshine dominates, with little to no rain, and temperatures can soar into the high 90s—even exceeding 100 F in some areas.

No matter when you visit Thailand , you’ll likely experience warm weather. The best season for your trip depends on your preferences for temperature, rain, and crowds. Here’s a breakdown:

  • High season (November-March). This is Thailand’s peak tourist season, and for good reason. The weather is delightful, with comfortable temperatures ranging from 70-80 F. There’s also minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. (And with clear skies, you’ll have ample opportunity to snap postcard-worthy photos.
  • Shoulder season (April, May, and October). The shoulder seasons in Thailand offer a good balance of good weather and smaller crowds. From April to May, the weather gets hotter, but not as scorching as it does in the hot season. October’s the tail end of the rainy season, with less frequent and intense showers.
  • Low season (July-September). Thailand’s rainy season sees frequent afternoon showers and high humidity. While it might not be the ideal time for all travelers, it has its charm. The landscapes are at their most lush, and there are significantly fewer crowds. You’ll also find the best deals on flights and accommodations.

A Thailand trip is always incredible, but having the right stuff in your suitcase makes every day better. Here are some essentials to pack:

  • Sun protection. Whether we’re talking big floppy hats, chic sunglasses, or your favorite sunscreens, you need to be ready for sunny days in Thailand. And because Southeast Asia can get very humid, it’s a good idea to bring a fan to help cool you down.
  • Lightweight, breathable layers. Thailand is a tropical country with hot, humid weather year-round. Pack loose-fitting, comfortable clothes made from lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites. When visiting temples, your clothes should cover most of your body. For men, that means full pants and shirts with sleeves. For women, dresses or skirts that go beyond the knee and tops that cover the shoulders—nothing too tight—will do the trick. A jacket or shawl also works.
  • Rain protection. For Thailand tours during the rainy season, take an umbrella everywhere you go. It might be clear during the day, but you never know when a tropical storm might arrive—even if it’s just for 20 minutes. Light, waterproof jackets and shoes will keep you comfortable, too.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Whether you’re strolling around a palace or boarding boats that’ll whisk you to floating markets, you’ll want your most comfortable footwear with you.
  • Swimwear. Thailand boasts stunning beaches and islands. Pack a swimsuit or two, a beach cover-up, and a quick-drying towel.
  • Small carry-on. On our Thailand tours , you’ll fly in-country several times between provinces. A carry-on bag ensures you’ll have all your essentials close at hand.

Once you’ve reserved one of our Thailand travel packages , we’ll send you detailed information about what to bring. Download the free Go Ahead Tours app before you take off, so you’ll have all the info you need about your trip right in your pocket.

The Land of Smiles contains a captivating blend of ancient temples, stunning beaches, energetic metropolises, and scenic natural beauty. Here are some of the best places to visit in Thailand, catering to a range of interests:

  • Bangkok . Thailand’s bustling capital has something for everyone. You can marvel at the grandeur of the Grand Palace, explore Wat Arun’s architectural splendor, take a scenic cruise along the Chao Phraya River, and indulge in the city’s street food scene.
  • Phuket. On Thailand’s largest island, you can relax on world-class beaches like Patong or Kata; explore historical sites like Phuket Old Town; indulge in the nightlife; or embark on diving and snorkeling adventures.
  • Chiang Mai . The largest city in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai, boasts rich cultural heritage and laid-back charm. Explore ancient temples like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, delve into lively night markets, and visit elephant sanctuaries for a unique encounter.

Thai food encompasses many delicious dishes—but ultimately, the best way to discover your favorite is by exploring the country’s culinary scene yourself! Here’s a sampling of the most popular foods to try during your Thailand travel :

  • Pad Thai. This stir-fried noodle dish is a classic for a reason. Rice noodles are stir-fried with protein (chicken, pork, shrimp, or tofu), vegetables, egg, and a flavorful tamarind-based sauce. It’s a crowd-pleaser with a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and sour flavors.
  • Tom Yum Goong. This hot-and-sour shrimp soup is another iconic Thai dish. Made fragrant by lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and chilies, it packs a flavorful punch with refreshing sourness. Shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, and a lime wedge complete this delightful soup.
  • Chicken curry. If you love curry, Thailand is the place to be. Every restaurant prepares its curry just a little differently, depending on local ingredients. Expect a delicious mix of lemongrass, coconut milk, shallots, coriander, and garlic, along with chilies to spice it up.
  • Thai coconut pancakes. Got a sweet tooth? Satisfy it with one of Thailand’s favorite street foods: creamy, crispy, and delightfully sweet coconut pancakes. These bite-sized, mouthwatering snacks can be found wherever street foods are sold. They’re perfect as a quick snack or a sweet ending to a meal.

We recommend spending nine to 22 days on a Thailand tour . Trips on the shorter end of this range will allow you to hit some of the country’s most popular sites—places like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai—while longer itineraries should give you more freedom to explore. If you’d like to spend time on Phuket, Koh Samui, and other, smaller islands, choose a longer tour.

Whether seeking adventure, relaxation, cultural experiences, or culinary delights, Thailand offers it all. Here are some of the most popular things to do there:

  • Tour the Grand Palace in Bangkok. The official residence of the Siamese royal family for over 200 years, the Grand Palace is the cultural heart of Thailand. A must-see for any visitor to Bangkok, its temples are covered in glistening gold and filled with colorful statues and opulent carvings.
  • Visit an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai.  In Thailand, elephants are a revered national symbol. Many sanctuaries, including ChangChill in Chiang Mai, provide a haven for rescued elephants. You can visit one to learn more about these beautiful animals and see them up close.
  • Relax on the beaches of Phuket or Krabi.  Thailand boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and places like Phuket and Krabi are popular tourist destinations with stunning sands and clear waters. You’ll also find some of the best diving and snorkeling on the planet.

A vibrant country of contrasts, Thailand attractions go well beyond typical tourist fare. Here are some unique adventures that await you:

  • Sail through the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. This commercial center is unique because vendors and shoppers do business from their own boats. You’ll sail along, jockeying for space as people haggle for the best produce, food, and other local specialties. If you want to soak in the energy, pull up to a flower market—it’s considered one of the best places to get a glimpse of Thai life.
  • Visit the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Also known as Wat Pho, this 16th-century temple is one of the oldest in Bangkok. The temple’s centerpiece is its 150-foot-long, 50-foot-tall, gold leaf-covered statue of the Buddha reclining on his side. (It’s one of the largest Buddha statues in Thailand!)
  • Sample teas at an oolong plantation. A visit to an oolong tea plantation isn’t just about the tea itself; it’s about time-honored traditions, connections to the land, and the warm hospitality of the Thai people.

By understanding and practicing the cultural norms of this beautiful country, you’ll show respect for Thai traditions and have a more positive and enriching experience. Here are some things to be aware of:

  • Respecting Thai culture. Thailand is predominantly Buddhist, and temples are sacred places. When visiting one, dress modestly (with shoulders and knees covered) and remove your shoes before entering. Avoid physical contact with monks, and always give them the right of way. Finally, don’t photograph monks without permission.
  • Bargaining. At markets and with street vendors, bargaining is expected. Be polite and have fun with the negotiation process.
  • Greetings and demeanor. The wai is a traditional Thai greeting, made with palms pressed together at chest level. The deeper the bow and higher the hands, the more respect is conveyed. A slight wai with a smile is appropriate for everyday greetings.
  • Public displays of affection (PDA). Avoid excessive PDA, which can be seen as disrespectful.

Thailand Travel Restrictions 2023

Thailand Travel Restrictions for 2023

========================

During the global COVID-19 pandemic, measures have been enforced to prevent and control COVID-19 from spreading in Thailand. This includes measures to keep an influx of visitors to Thailand in check.

After two years of dealing with Covid and extensive travel restrictions, international travel is finally returning to normal on the 1st of July, 2022. From July 1st, the following changes have been implemented for all international travelers.

  • Foreigners do not need to show proof of Covid Insurance.
  • All mandatory hotel quarantine has been removed.
  • Thailand Pass is no longer required for foreign travelers to enter Thailand.
  • Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination before arriving.
  • Unvaccinated travelers (including children traveling with unvaccinated parents) will need to complete an RT-PCR or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) 72 hours before departing for Thailand. Proof does not need to be uploaded before traveling.
  • Airlines and Thai Immigration will do random checks to confirm travelers meet Covid prevention requirements (vaccination or Covid test).

Read below and you can see how you can once again visit Thailand with ease.

Required Documents for Travel to Thailand

Please have the following documents ready.

  • Passport with at least six month validity
  • Visa or visa exemption qualification
  • Buy Thailand Travel Insurance
  • Boarding pass to be presented at Passport Control
  • Hotel booking confirmation if asked by Immigration Officer
  • Note: Vaccination record no longer required

Incorrect documents will delay the entry screening by rules from the Thai immigration bureau and its Thai immigration officials.

Buy Your Insurance Now

Step 1 – Check your eligibility

It is important to start your travel plans to Thailand by checking your eligibility. After July 1, you will need to check on what to do depending on your vaccination status, and what type of visa you will use when visiting Thailand.

For a general traveler, you may opt to enter Thailand without a visa under the Visa Exemption program. If you are entering Thailand for a holiday, you may be eligible to receive a “Visa on arrival”.

For those entering Thailand for a different purpose of stay, they need to obtain a Thai visa from their local Thai Embassy or Consulate prior to coming to Thailand. In the next step of the process, you may check the available visas for you.

Step 2 – Apply for the Visa

Thailand elite visa.

Do you want to stay in Thailand for 5, 10, or 20 years? You may consider the Thai Elite Visa program. It is an easy-to-apply and hassle-free visa application for your long-term stay in Thailand. For more information about the Thai Elite Membership and Visa application, you may check this page: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand-visa/thai-elite-visa

Visa Exemption

Nationalities under the Visa Exemption Program are allowed to enter Thailand without a visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate. Upon arriving in Thailand, most nationalities who are part of the Visa Exemption Program are allowed to stay for 30 days. Certain nationalities can arrive as part of this program but for a shorter period of time. It is best to check the country exemption list and confirm how long you can visit Thailand without needing to apply for a Visa.

Tourist Visa and Special Tourist Visa (STV)

Foreigners may also apply for a Tourist Visa from the Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days, and the 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV) which can be extended for two 90-day visa extensions at the local immigration office. There are certain requirements needed for the STV, but it allows a visitor to stay in Thailand for a potential 9 months.

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may also apply for a wide range of non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand as well as their Parents or Legal Guardians
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for long stay (it is different from type O visa)

Thailand Travel Guide 2021

Step 3 – Book a Flight, Hotel, and COVID-19 Insurance

There are many changes for how to enter Thailand after July 1, so it is important for a traveler to know what is required before departing their country and entering Thailand.

Flights to Thailand

At present, most airlines such as Qatar, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon, Finnair, Thai Airways, and other major airlines are now permitted to operate flights to Thailand whether it is on a daily or weekly basis.

Vaccinated travelers are required to have their vaccination certificates on hand. Unvaccinated travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR or Pro-ATK 72 hours before departure from their home country.

Though Thailand Pass has been removed from July 1, and travelers no longer need to upload proof of vaccination or Covid Test, Airlines will do random checks and if travelers do not meet Covid requirements they will not be allowed to board their flight.

Before booking flights to Thailand with the airlines, travelers should ensure that they study the different categories of Thai visas granted to foreign nationals at this time to determine the possibility of travel. Please note that having plane tickets does not guarantee entry to Thailand, non-Thai travelers must have the correct Covid documents to enter Thailand. Since all mandatory quarantine conditions have been removed, travelers no longer need to worry about booking “sealed” flights if they wish to transit directly to a domestic flight.

Hotel Updates

From July 1, travelers are no longer required to book a SHA+ hotel and undergo an RT-PCR test on arrival. Travelers can enter the Kingdom and travel freely, booking any of the many wonderful hotels in Thailand .

Unvaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of a hotel booking as mandatory quarantine measures have been removed for all travelers.

It is recommended to browse hotels in Thailand on Agoda.com before arriving as it is easier to organize transport to your first night’s rest if pre-booked.

Travelers are free to travel anywhere in Thailand when they arrive and do not need to worry about any testing or Province restrictions.

Book Your Insurance

Having Travel Insurance was a good practice before the world had to deal with Covid. During the Covid pandemic it was mandatory.

It is recommended for all visitors coming to Thailand to purchase travel insurance . Testing positive for Covid is still a possibility, and though people hope for an incident-free holiday, injuries and illness can happen.

Foreign visitors are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand. If the worst happens, a traveler could have expensive medical bills. Having a quality insurance policy can save a traveler potential medical expenses and allow them to enjoy a worry-free holiday.

A good insurance policy will also cover incidents like delayed flights, damage to personal possession, and loss of luggage.

Step 4 – Do I Need to Apply for the Thailand Pass?

From July 1st, 2022, foreign travelers no longer need to apply for a Thailand Pass before entering Thailand. The system is still in place but is now a platform where visitors can notify the Thai authority and medical facilities, and seek advice if they are diagnosed positive for Covid during their stay.

If you need to access the Thailand Pass system while in Thailand, please visit https://tp.consular.go.th/ and register by filling in your personal details on the Thailand Pass registration page.

Step 5 – Prepare the documents for your flight

Once you have booked your flights and ready to travel, it is recommended to prepare some documents for your holiday.

  • Valid Thai visa in your passport or electronic visa approval (if applicable)
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate in case you are asked to present it to the airline or Passport Control for a spot check on arrival.
  • RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test result if you are asked to present it for a random Covid check before boarding or on arrival.
  • Travel insurance for Thailand is recommended by the Thai Government

Siam Legal has received reports from potential clients that some hospitals are creating difficulties for them until full payment is made for their medical expenses. Also, foreigners have allegedly been threatened with lawsuits for not settling their medical bills before being discharged. Using out-of-country policies can be problematic. We recommend using insurance providers headquartered inside Thailand with proper cover to avoid any undesirable outcomes.

Siam Legal International, a premier law firm in Thailand, recommends purchasing the proper insurance and so endorses AXA Insurance for your travel to Thailand insurance needs.

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT POINTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING TRAVEL INSURANCE

  • Please review the details of any insurance before purchasing to understand if the policy has adequate cover. Cheap policies with inadequate levels of cover can lead to significant personal liability, and scenarios where policy holders incur hundreds of thousands of baht in out-of-pocket medical expenses have been reported. There are significant financial risks to being underinsured during your stay in Thailand.
  • These policies do not cover medical costs from accidents (like motorcycle accidents) or common unexpected illnesses (common fever or food poisoning). Best to pay a few baht more for the peace of mind that comes from having proper coverage.
  • AXA covers medical expenses (outpatient and inpatient) for accidents and illnesses, including COVID-19. Other insurance coverage might not.
  • AXA also covers telemedicine and teleconsultation, which may be required during the quarantine period of any traveler.

Thai hospital staff are familiar with AXA cover, which should prevent any inconvenience during hospital admission or medical treatment from your hotel room. AXA Thailand also offers 24/7 local support during your stay in Thailand.

List of approved covid-19 vaccines.

As of December 1, the MoPH has approved the following vaccines:

  • Pfizer–BioNTech or Comirnaty
  • Janssen or Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S
  • AstraZeneca or Covishield
  • Sinopharm or COVILO
  • CoronaVac or SinoVac
  • Sputnik Lite

How to Obtain COVID-19 Insurance

Though COVID-19 travel insurance is no longer mandatory for entry to Thailand, it is recommended to have comprehensive insurance for the duration of your stay. Good travel insurance covers not only medical expenses relating to Covid, but also accident cover, personal damage or loss of possessions and missed or delayed flights.

It is best to purchase insurance before you travel. The easiest way to buy your policy is online through a reputable insurance provider. The insurance company will provide you with the all-important certificate of cover that you can present to authorities or medical professionals if you need to make a claim.

You may also be asked to present this certificate to the airline before they will allow you onboard. It’s quick and easy to do online. You can choose your length of policy from 7, 15, 30, 60 days, and 180 days. Just make sure that the policy covers your entire period of stay in Thailand as foreigners are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand and insurance companies will not cover claims for existing conditions.

You may purchase AXA COVID-19 travel insurance within a few minutes. Check them below.

Good afternoon, I will be travelling to Thailand in December 2022 with my 8 year old child. I am fully vaccinated but by child is not. My questions are: – Does my child need PCR test before entering Thailand? – My COVID-19 immunisation booster was done in February 2022. Will I need to get an updated booster to enter Thailand?

Many thanks

That would be okay, children can enter without test if accompanied by fully vaccinated parents.

I am Indian National and visit Thailand during 16 August to 28 August 2022. Do I need to apply for E-Visa in advance or can I get visa on arrival in Bangkok/Phuket? What is the difference between E-Visa and Visa on arrival for Indians?

For Indian passport holder can apply visa on arrival amounting Thb 2000.

Visa on arrival (VOA) is a visa that you will get at any International airports upon arrival while the electronic visa (E-visa) is one of the visa types issued to foreigners via electronic system.

Also I will arrive in Bangkok but leave from Phuket. Would it be ok when I show the return ticket (that will be 2 one-way tickets) ? Thanks & Regards.

Hello Korn,

Yes, that would be fine. There is no problem in which Airport you would be as long as your flight date will return on your 14th day in Thailand.

Notorious crocodile farm re-opens amid tourism revival in Thailand

Posted: April 15, 2024 | Last updated: April 15, 2024

A notorious crocodile farm re-opened amid a tourism revival in Thailand. The Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo housed more than 60,000 crocodiles and other animals, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, chimpanzees, camels, hippos and fish. It received several complaints of alleged cruelty, including poorly maintained dirty crocodile pools, while concerned tourists called it out over their animals looking extremely thin before closing down in 2022. But on April 1, the zoo held a grand reopening, welcoming tourists back into its doors, along with a dinosaur museum. Footage shows the visitors watching the crocodiles from a walking bridge over an enclosure. There was an animal show and feeding activity where tourists could offer chicken meat tied to a string to the reptiles. The caretakers also assisted families to go near the crocodiles so they could pose beside the animals for a picture. The zoo lost a lucrative contract Chinese travel company Trip, then CTrip, in 2019 when they saw a famished Asian black bear trying to escape from its cage in 2019. After being investigated twice by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation in 2021 and 2022, prompted by dirty ponds and extremely thin tigers, as well as an elephant with an injured leg caused by a chain, the zoo decided to stop operating during the pandemic. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which released videos of the zoo's alleged maltreatment of its animals, said in a statement in 2021 before its closure: 'In 2020, the zoo forced a masked, leashed chimpanzee to ride around on a bike and spray disinfectant in a spectacle to capitalize on the coronavirus crisis.'

Southern Thailand Sojourn: Nightlife & National Parks

The tour had great variety of different ways of travels and different accommodations in different parts of Thailand! Art (guide) was very good at giving the option for either relax or activity every day. He also helped booking transportation and transfers for all of us with flights from different airports, making sure we would not be all left on our own after the tour ended.

South to North - 15 days Tour

South to North - 15 days

I booked the 15 day Thailand group tour and had one of the best experiences of my life! I specifically chose this tour as it covered a lot of the key places including Chiang Mai and Pai in the North which actually turned out to be my two favourite places! I decided to book with Feel Free after having a half hour call with one of the founders Adam where all my questions about the tour was answered thoroughly and honestly! I personally don’t drink and go out but this tour is great if you do like to drink and party or don’t! I loved that everything was optional and no one was pressured to do anything they didn’t want to do! I’d join most of the group dinners and on the couple nights there were nights out I did my own thing! The tour is jam packed with lots of different activities day to day, can be a lot but definitely worth it! The itinerary is so carefully thought out and I experienced a number of activities I never thought I’d try! My group leader Jamie was also great! She was very attentive to everyone and their needs and how they were feeling. I really appreciated the little things like her being on call if I had any questions when I was out doing my own thing, waking up pretty early to make sure I got picked up to be taken to the extra Muay Thai class I decided to go to, carrying my suitcase at times when she didn’t need to, taking pictures and videos whilst we were enjoying the moment etc. I also liked the balance of having free time to do our own thing, especially when it can be overwhelming at times for some people to constantly be around a group of people. I also met some incredibly amazing and inspiring people on this tour who I’m so grateful to have met! Everyone was super lovely, sweet and caring and will never forget the amazing experiences and memories I made with everyone! The group was mixed with both introverted and extroverted people but everyone got on so well and made a conscious effort to get to know everyone! Overall one of the best experiences ever, thank you Feel Free for the best 15 days of my life!

Thailand Island Hopper - 9 days

I LOVED my trip to Thailand! Only complaint is I wish I could have stayed longer. All the excursions were well thought out and were clearly chosen with purpose. I felt like I got an authentic taste of Thailand, but the best part of my trip was the people! My group got along right away with the help of our tour leaders, Jamie and Jonny! They were amazing at making everyone feel included and heard. Both of them cultivated a wonderful environment for each of us to feel like we could be ourselves while exploring Thailand. They each were equally professional and fun! Never felt unsafe at any point during our travels. If you can take a trip with either Jamie or Jonny, DO IT!! They are amazing :) I made some life long friends and memories on this trip, so if you are unsure whether you should go, take the leap and do it, you won’t regret it!!

Very nice balance of long travel days followed more settled sight seeing day. Loved the freetime options occasionally too, often tours are so critivall3timed, no sparetime to shop for souvenirs or just do as you wish. Arjan was a very attentive guide, going above and beyond to help some clients.

Experience Thailand 9 Days - Bangkok to the North, Small Group Tour (English Only)

Geweldig!

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days Tour

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days

My partner and I have just returned from this truly wonderful tour of Thailand and overall our experience was overwhelmingly positive, however at one point I felt the entire trip was going to be soured by an awful experience we had at the elephant camp Chiang Mai. To anyone considering this tour with Legend Travel: enquire about the elephant sanctuary BEFORE you book. In Dec 2022 when we booked our tour, the itinerary listed the elephant sanctuary as what is listed now - a visit to “a small riverside elephant camp” with no ride and “a trip to the river where you will get to help the elephants take their morning bath”. This was going to be the highlight of our trip and an amazing experience to get up close with these wonderful and friendly animals. We had chosen this tour because we wanted to support ethical and responsible sanctuaries where the well-being and treatment of the elephants were the top priority. What we visited in Chiang Mai was so far from this. We witnessed the mistreatment of about 20 elephants, who were chained, subjected to the use of bullhooks to inflict pain and control them, elephants with open cuts from being hit by their handlers during the endless tourist rides, and elephants performing tricks for a hoard of tourists (football, painting, lifting tourists by their trunks). At one point, an elephant became too excited by the number of treats being fed to her by the tourists and stepped over a barrier log separating the viewing area and the showground resulting in her handler digging into her ear with his bullhook, causing her to shriek out in pain. I have attached photos. It was so far from the sanctuary we had been expecting to visit as per the itinerary. As soon as we returned to our bus, I immediately wrote to Legend Travel to explain what we had just visited and how it was so far from what was described. I was so appalled that our money had been used to benefit such an awful place. After a series of exchanges with Danny, I was brushed off and informed that the camp we visited was in line with the itinerary from our original booking in December 2022, which had since been updated in early 2023. No way! We had specifically booked this tour for the sanctuary visit and in any event, a review from January 2023 showcased a completely different camp, raising doubts about whether we were mistakenly directed to the wrong location or if our local guide had altered the plans without Legend Travel's knowledge. Initially I was thanked for my feedback and Legend Travel apologised for the “discrepancies and any confusion”. Following this my aim was to raise awareness among potential travellers regarding this distressing experience in Chiang Mai, hoping to spare others from the misleading impression that they would be visiting a rescue sanctuary, only to encounter conditions reminiscent of the camps the sanctuary elephants are rescued from. After a few days of back and forth, Legend Travel proposed a resolution: a small cash refund or a visit whilst in Phuket to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary to “re-do” the experience. Given that this part of the itinerary was a key factor in our decision to book the tour, we opted to take the re-do and Legend Travel organised our visit to a lovely sanctuary in Phuket, where we fed the free-roaming elephants watermelon for breakfast, treated them to a mud bath and washed them off in the river afterwards. It was such an amazing experience - exactly what we had expected the visit in Chiang Mai to be and I am so grateful we got to experience this during our tour. I understand that mistakes can occur and sometimes when you trust local guides things can go wrong, however the harrowing experience at the first elephant camp was so awful I was shocked by the explanation that this could have potentially even formed part of an original itinerary. The resolution offered by Legend Travel was entirely appropriate and and our visit to the sanctuary in Phuket was handled very well. What could have left a sour taste in an otherwise fantastic tour of Thailand was rectified, and for that, we are appreciative. With regards to the other elements of our trip:
- We found the hotels good (they were not the hotels listed on the current itinerary as we were booked to stay in the hotels as per our original 2022 itinerary)
- Our guide in Bangkok, Ning, was lovely. She went out of her way to show us the authentic Thailand. She bought us local fruits to try, we visited a flower market and she taught us how to fold a lotus flower for the temple offerings, and she took us via train to the train market before visiting the Damnoensaduak floating market, which was such a fantastic experience. The train ran through the centre of the market!!
- Our guide in Chiang Mai, Dare, was very knowledgeable and was more than happy to amend our itinerary so that we visited the Doi Inthanon National Park rather than Chiang Rai and the Golden Circle which would have involved too much driving (8+ hours)
- Both our drivers in Bangkok and Chiang Mai were extremely safe and kept the bus clean, tidy, and topped with ice water for our return after a full day of sightseeing
- In Phuket we were left mainly to ourselves but the Phi Phi Island tour ran well, although hindered by rainy weather and choppy seas - which didn’t help with that morning’s breakfast…
- The timings of the internal flights were convenient (10:20am from Bangkok and 10:15am from Chiang Mai) so we didn’t waste the whole day travelling and sitting around at the airport

In summary, I would highly recommend this tour to other prospective travellers who have made it to this far in my review! However, I strongly advise you to check with Legend Travel regarding the elephant sanctuary component before finalising your plans. Additionally, we took the advice of another reviewer and flew home from Phuket International rather than return to Bangkok and fly from there. We were able to get outbound flights from LHR to Singapore and then onto Bangkok. If we were to have returned via Bangkok we would have backtracked through Bangkok and this saved us a lot of time during what is already a long travel day.

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui Tour

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui

Normally, when I travel somewhere, I enjoy playing the role of tour guide myself. However, having never been to SE Asia before, and not speaking the language (or even recognizing the alphabet), my wife and I opted for our first tour and hoped for the best. It turned out to be an excellent decision! Without a doubt, our tour guide and our fellow travelers added to our experience. We went to places we wouldn't have gone. We stayed in lodging we wouldn't have stayed. We did activities that we wouldn't have done. And we learned things that we wouldn't have learned. On a personal level, it was nice for me to just relax as someone else handled all the logistics regarding trains, boats, transfers, taxis, etc. Even so, there was plenty of downtime throughout the tour for us to do whatever we wanted -- (SCUBA dives, private dinner, wanders through the market). Given our positive experience, I expect that we will do other tours in the future!

The trip was amazing, the CEO (papa chai) mad the trip smooth… and met some amazing people and had wonderful time altogether… definitely returning back
This trip gives a well paced overview of central North Thailand. G Adventure organized the trip well and their travel manager Sek was amazing.
What an absolutely unreal experience! If anyone’s on the fence on whether to book, just do it. A pretty fast paced snapshot of Thailand, but amazing - you get to see so much in a relatively short space of time. All of it brilliant! We did get very lucky to have Dan Woodward as our group leader, he was so knowledgable about Thailand…full of facts! It’s very easy to tell he loves his job from which the group benefited immensely, he could be a social chameleon, chief problem solver, or fun instigator depending on what the moment needed. Our group was female heavy in terms of numbers, but Dan made sure Dom had the male companionship he might have missed, without being too much of a “lad”. He made sure we fully maximised our time, saw everything and ultimately enjoyed every moment! Just a shame he’s a Leeds fan ? massive thanks to intro but especially Daddy Dan for the trip of a lifetime - bring on Sri Lanka experience next year (hopefully Dan W goes there next ?). Love Dom Jolly (Dom & Holly) ❤️
