29-Year-Old Man Dies Trying to Save 3 Children From California River: 'Our Hero'

A GoFundMe for Manjeet Singh has been set up to send his remains back to his native India

A 29-year-old man died after attempting to rescue three children from a California river, and a GoFundMe is hoping to raise funds to send his body back to his family in India.

Manjeet Singh was with his brother-in-law at Kings River in Reedley on Wednesday evening when he noticed three children being overtaken by the river's current, according to KFSN .

Singh — who had just completed his first day of truck driving school hours earlier — rushed into the water to help them, and drowned during his efforts.

"He went in to try to help them," Reedley Police Commander Marc Ediger told the news station. "[He] unfortunately went under pretty quickly and never came back up."

Two of the children eventually made it back to shore, while an 8-year-old girl spent 15 minutes underwater before being rescued. She is currently on life support at a local hospital, KFSN reported.

"I think the kids waded out too far and started being carried by the current under the bridge," Ediger told the station.

A witness to the incident told CBS affiliate KGPE that he helped pull one of the three children to safety.

"I [saw] the girls yelling, and I know they were playing, but they were going under the bridge already, so I came running down the bridge, and I [saw] them get one girl out, and I was trying to catch up to the other little girl," said the witness, who did not provide his name.

It took rescue personnel more than half an hour to locate Singh and retrieve him from Kings River, KFSN reported. His body was found next to brush a short distance from shore.

A GoFundMe was set up on Friday morning to raise money to send Singh's body to India, where his family lives and from where he reportedly moved to the U.S. two years ago.

It has since raised over $11,000 toward its $31,000 goal.

"[Singh] saw the children being [pulled] by the current and jumped in to save them... [and] lost his life trying to save the children," a description on the donation page reads.

"He was the breadwinner of his family. His family lives in India," the description continues. "His parents are elders and he came to the United States to help them financially and live the American Dream. May Waheguru Ji Bless you All! Together, let's pray for MR. SINGH of Fresno....OUR HERO."

According to KFSN , the parents of the hospitalized 8-year-old girl are trying to fly her siblings from Mexico to California to say their goodbyes.

The tragic accident comes just days after 1 8-year-old Jaerson Alvarez and 17-year-old Wilmer Alexi Rodriguez were killed while trying to rescue a 5-year-old girl from Trinity River in Texas. The girl was eventually rescued, but her 25-year-old father suffered injuries and was airlifted to a Houston trauma center.

Dropshipping entrepreneur and consultant Manjeet Singh Sangha has seen his life utterly transformed ever since he embarked on his journey. Making his clients understand the basics of the dropshipping industry clearly, Manjeet has helped many of them earn monthly 5-6 figure amounts.

Manjeet was born in a small city near Berlin, Germany, and has dreamt of owning a business since childhood. Manjeet worked tirelessly and got the hang of the industry. His passion for growing exponentially only grew by the day, and he became an established name in the dropshipping circuit. Manjeet also started his consultancy firm to help people who wanted to start their dropshipping business but had no clue how to. He inspired many clients into opening their dropshipping business and, with his astute advice, helped them jump the hurdles along their way. His effective training has garnered him over 2500 clients internationally, many of which are earning in 5-6 figures, monthly. Apart from all this, Desirichkid invests in real estate also. He has been creating a massive portfolio of commercial and residential properties for building up long-term wealth. However, his greatest luxury is having the freedom with which he controls everything through his laptop. GEORGE TOWN: For driver Lee Chun Khai, the Songkran festival is a time for prayers, offerings and some fun.

“We take part in the prayers as well and offer flowers, but most of the time, it is about enjoying ourselves,” said Lee, 19.

Lee, whose mother is of Thai descent, said he would always celebrate the festival at the Wat Chayamangkalaram Thai Buddhist temple here.

Songkran, the Thai traditional new year which is also known as the water festival, is celebrated on April 13 each year. The festivities extend through the weekend.

“We would pray and usually eat som tam (Thai papaya salad). It is something we eat on special occasions,” he said.

Lee said Songkran came timely with the hot weather recently.

“It is nice as today (yesterday) is a hot day and we are all having fun cooling off,” said Lee, who splashed water on his friends from a tub.

Myanmar national Aye Aye Htike, 37, who was dressed in her traditional attire comprising a blouse called “eingyi” and skirt known as “htamein”, said it was their new year as well.

“It is called Thingyan Festival which is the Myanmar new year.

“We bring flowers to the temple as offerings and then celebrate at home together,” said the factory worker.

Wat Chayamangkalaram and Dhammikarama Burmese Temple are opposite each other along Burma Lane and the street was packed with Thais and Myanmar nationals who came in their traditional costumes.

Stalls selling traditional dishes and finger food lined the street.

Devotees come to bathe the Buddha statue and offer alms to monks. Most took part in water play, splashing each other and having a fun time.

Over at the Bayan Baru Gurdwara Sahib, the Sikh community gathered to perform “seva” (selfless service).

They cooked and served food to celebrate Vaisakhi.Sikhs will celebrate Vaisakhi today, which marks the establishment of the Khalsa order by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Sikh Guru in 1699.

Housewife Sonia Kaur, 38, and her husband David Sathasivan, 51, a factory worker, were at the gurdwara yesterday with their children to join in on the festivities.

“We would come over every day for three days. There will be no cooking at home as we will all come here for our meals,” said Sonia.

Housewife Pritam Kaur, 67, who was seen dicing fruits and vegetables, said it was good to catch up with her friends while she carried out voluntary work.

“We perform seva by working together to cook and clean up,” she said. “This is special for us as we have a special prayer every year for the establishment of the Khalsa.”

Gurdwara deputy president Manjeet Singh, who was seen cooking dishes, said they started the prayers on Friday evening and this would go on till 4pm today.“The prayers will go on for 48 hours as they recite the 1,430-page Sikh holy scriptures. It is a continuous process with people taking turns to read it, ” he said.

In the meantime, Manjeet said they would be preparing to serve the meals.

“We do our community service, where some will cook and others will clean. Everything is donated by the devotees,” he said.

• Russian destinations

Saratov is a major city in southern Russia. The city was initially founded in the 16th century as a fortress to protect the southern districts of the Russian Empire. Situated on the Volga River, Saratov was a major military aircraft manufacturing site, the home of the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, and a vital part of the Soviet space program. There is a museum dedicated to Gagarin and his life. Saratov has a rich cultural life, as well - among the most famous sites is the Conservatoire designed in a Neo-Gothic style as well as the Drama Theatre named after Ivan Slonov, one of the oldest theatres in Russia. For those interested in art there is the Radischev Art Museum with more than 20,000 exhibits. Of other interest, the community of Volga Germans was centred in the Saratov region. In the early 20th century over 800,000 ethnic Germans made their home in this area preserving many of their German customs.

There are flights and trains from Moscow to Saratov, but is normally visited as part of a river cruise. The embankments along the Volga give some spectacular views including the ‘Old Bridge’ which was the longest bridge in Europe until the 1980s.

How one Russian city became the country’s SECOND largest - overnight!

While Russians were celebrating the New Year, the city of Saratov on the Volga River grew fivefold and, thus, became the second largest city in the country after Moscow, displacing St. Petersburg. Since January 1, 2022, a huge neighboring suburban district has been annexed to Saratov and the city area has grown to 2,100 square kilometers, while less than a million people live there. For comparison, the area of Moscow is 2,500 square kilometers and the population is 15 times larger. What’s the phenomenon of Saratov and why do locals joke that it is impossible to leave it (or are they not joking)?

Cozy Russian province on the Volga

Saratov is an ancient merchant city founded in the 16th century, with a beautiful downtown where you can see buildings of different styles and epochs: wooden houses with carved window surroundings, luxurious pre-revolutionary mansions, monumental Soviet factories.

“The center of Saratov is located in a hollow surrounded by hills, which offer a stunning view of the city itself, the Volga and the visiting card of Saratov - a bridge over the Volga almost three kilometers long, which leads to the neighboring city of Engels,” says local resident Ksenia Chernova.

You can step into the past by walking around Saratov, even just looking at your feet: manhole covers, produced by local iron foundries before the 1917 Revolution, with inscriptions in old Russian, are still preserved on the streets, according to Ksenia.

One of the most noteworthy buildings in the city is the conservatory of the early 20th century built in a pseudo-Gothic style, considered the leading music school of the country, where young musicians from all regions strive to enroll. Right behind this building begins a long pedestrian street with cozy cafes, souvenir kiosks and leisurely pedestrian areas. If you visit only this central area, you’ll still enjoy a real, relaxing Russian province at its best!

But the outskirts of the city leave a less pleasant impression: typical panel houses, courtyards filled with cars, constant traffic jams, snow-covered streets that no one clears. From time to time, locals call the outskirts a “communal hell” on social networks: personal and public transport gets stuck in snowdrifts and sidewalks and stairs in winter generally turn into Mount Everest.

In Russia, Saratov is known as “the city from which it is impossible to leave” - memes with this statement are regularly posted by locals.

The reason for such jokes is that after bad weather, it’s simply impossible to drive around the city, because of the poor snow cleaning, the lack of storm drains and bad road conditions that turn streets into streams of impassable dirt.

In fact, Saratov Region consistently tops Russian cities with a decreasing population. And here’s the paradox - the population is shrinking, but the city itself is growing in size. And here’s why.

Saratov gets BIGGER!

In the Soviet years, the city’s population was approaching a million. Back then, cities with a million or more received the right to build a subway, as happened in Samara, Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan, which also stand on the Volga. Indeed, there was a metro project for Saratov in the late 1980s, but then the Soviet Union collapsed and transport problems turned out to be less important than economic ones. Defense and engineering plants were closed, due to the transition from a planned to a market economy, and people found themselves out of work. But, today, the idea of expanding the city has arisen again. In 2022, 79 nearby villages were annexed to Saratov.

And not because of the dreams of having a subway. The city administration explains that the growth of the city makes federal funds for development accessible, which will lead to improving the infrastructure and creating more enterprises and working places.  

And Saratov isn’t planning on stopping there. For many years, it has been looking to annex the town of Engels and other nearby settlements.
