We found Martin through Cruising Excursions and like all their vendors, he was absolutely excellent. Martin really knew his stuff, giving us a terrific idea of the geography of Cartagena and it’s effect on history. In just a few hours, he managed to take us everywhere we wanted go. We visited Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, Convento La Popa de la Galera, Manga Island, the beaches, the old walled city, two very interesting museums and much more. Throughout Martin was a font of information and very willing to linger anywhere that caught our particular fancy. We covered twice the ground of the people on the “approved” tours from our cruise ship and learned far more about the city and its history.I would recommend Martin to anyone. Friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, entertaining … and he speaks excellent English. Give him a try when you are in Cartagena, You won’t be disappointed.

tonywalsh2015 – 12/04/2013

My wife and I booked Martin Rosales ([email protected]) for a private tour of Cartagena while our Oceania excursion ship was docked there on December 9, 2013. Since we persuaded two other couples to join us, the cost was just $60 per person–about half the price charged by the ship for touring with a much bigger group. Martin was waiting for us when we reached the dock and promptly led us to a comfortable, air-conditioned van. We then explpred with him all the major sights of the city, including San Felipe, La Popa, the Plaza de San Diego, and the Peter Claver Cathedral. Radiating passion for the city and its sights, Martin not only knew all about its history but also pointed out the bar where American Secret Service agents met the prostitutes who got them into such hot water last year. I recommend him highly. –Jim H (retired college professor)

chillsnthrills – 12/09/2013

“I shopped around a bit and found Martin to be responsive and very accommodating to my father who could not walk much. Martin organized the perfect tour for is with minimal walking but encompassing the whole the city. He is extremely knowledgable about the city and it’s history. Our van was sized well and the air conditioning was great! Be sure to start your tour as early as possible before the heat. He was the best value of all the tour guides I talked to.

Martin could of improved his tour by sharing a little bit more about his personal story since he is from Cartagena.”

MartinL – 12/11/2013

We hired Martin to do a 4 hour private tour of Cartagena while we visited on a cruise. Martin did an excellent job and was very well informed. He took us to areas that a larger tour bus could not have and we thought his private tour was one of the best we have ever had. I would strongly recommend using Martin.

RobertP – 12/12/2013

Martin was on the pier when we disembarked from the ship. And while we were hesitant about using a tour guide not endorsed by the cruise ship, Martin proved to be excellent. His rate was half the fare on the ship and more than twice as long. He showed us sites and areas we wouldn’t have seen on the ship’s tours and for half the price. His knowledge of Cartagena and it’s history was outstanding and made the tour extremely entertaining and informative. If you get the chance, be sure to use him.

Description

One of the more interesting cities on your itinerary steeped in history. This was the transit port for all the wealth Spain derived from South America. The famous "Old City" is comprised of 12 square blocks filled with attractions, boutiques and restaurants. Throughout Colombia, the Spanish Empire's influence in the New World is self-evident. Its fortress walls, quaint narrow streets, and balconied houses are all vivid reminders of Spain's hold on Cartagena and throughout the Caribbean and South America. This is the land of El Dorado and flamboyant adventurers in search of the ever-elusive gold. Cartagena's well-constructed fortifications defended its borders against seafaring pirates whose attacks lasted for more than 200 years. Today this modern and bustling city, seaport, and commercial center still boasts much of its original colonial architecture. Your journey here will provide you with a significant link to the region's grand past. **Please note that passengers may encounter numerous local vendors at various tourist locations and may find them to be persistent in their sales offers.

More about Cartagena, Colombia Points of Interest

The walled historic center of Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its winding streets lined with Spanish Colonial architecture display colorfully painted buildings, local bars and restaurants.

Considered by many the most impressive city walls in the world, Las Murallas began construction after an attack by Sir Francis Drake at the end of the 16th century.

Majestically standing guard on a hillside overlooking the city and harbor is Castillo de San Felipe, a fortress built by the Spanish for protection against pirates while shipping gold out to Europe.

Behind a charming, colonial facade, the palace museum displays instruments of torture from the Spanish Inquisition, pre-Columbian, colonial and independence-era art.

The cathedral is one of the largest in a series of fortresses with a massive exterior and simple interior. Partially demolished by Sir Francis Drake's cannons, it was completed in 1602.

Gold and pottery collections of the Tayrona, Calima and Sinú people are on display, as well as panel exhibitions about the Atlantic coast cultures.

Built atop a hill, this 17th-century monastery features a chapel, a colonial museum and a spectacular view of the city, and remains inhabited by monks even today.

This presentation of music and dance takes place at the historic Heredia Theater. Five distinct dances from three important regions of Colombia are performed by a professional dance company, from the Atlantic Coast (Cumbia), the Pacific Coast (Currulao and Abosao), and the Los Andes region (the Market Place and the Indian Legend).

Nestled within the southeastern corner of Spain is Cartagena, a coastal town with an interesting history.

Wandering through this charming town, evidence of the town’s past is all around you, including a host of Roman monuments as well as museums.

Cartagena, Spain, is often overlooked in favor of larger, more well-known Spanish cities. However, I believe that Cartagena is a gorgeous town that is well worth visiting.

Being a relatively hidden gem, you don’t have to contend with huge crowds, which is a real bonus!

Top Cartagena Spain Shore Excursions for Cruisers

1. private roman walking tour, including the roman theatre.

⭐️ Rating: 5/5 ⌛️Tour Time: 4 hours (approx.)✅  Book it Here

Cartagena is fantastic if you’re a history buff, as dotted throughout the town are a number of Roman monuments.

The most striking attraction within Cartagena has to be the Roman Theater , a restored Roman amphitheater that was built sometime between 5 and 1 BCE.

The spectacular amphitheater was discovered by accident in 1988 during the excavation of a basement. The amphitheater had lain buried beneath Cartagena for centuries until this point.

Today a visit to the Roman Theater is one of the most popular things to do in the town.

The Theater is just one of many Roman sites. Another must-visit Roman site, Casa de la Fortuna (the House of Fortune) , is the underground ruins of a 1st-century Roman house.

Within this resorted house are a number of rooms furnished with discovered artifacts. The house offers a great snapshot of Roman life.

Both the Roman Theater and Casa de la Fortuna can be visited as part of a private walking Roman tour through Cartagena.

A walking tour also offers the opportunity to see more of Cartagena, taking you down quaint streets which are lined with characterful buildings.

You will also get the chance to do a bout of shopping on your tour.

On this private tour , you will visit all of Cartagena’s highlights, starting with the Cabo de Palos lighthouse, which sits just outside Cartagena on a 600-meter-wide peninsula.

Built-in 1865, this lighthouse has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest due to its neoclassical architecture.

On your excursion, you will also get to admire the Punic Wall, an archeological site that dates back to the 3rd century BC, showing the first-ever defensive wall of Cartagena, built by the Carthaginians.

You will get to marvel at other notable attractions, such as the Roman Theater, Castillo de la Concepción (a grand castle on a hill), and Museo Naval (the Naval Museum).

Can you walk from your cruise ship to Cartagena, Spain?

Yes! It’s a mere 5-minute walk from your cruise ship into Cartagena city center. Many of the key sights in Cartagena are within walking distance from Cartagena Cruise Port, including the Roman Theatre (a 10-minute walk) and Castillo de la Concepción, a beautiful castle on a hill (a 20-minute walk).

Where do cruise ships dock in Cartagena, Spain?

Cartagena Cruise Port can be found at the southernmost tip of Cartagena Marina, on a long pier known as the Cruise Ship Dock. It’s within walking distance of the city center and Cartagena’s key attractions.

What is the best way to get around Cartagena?

Cartagena is a relatively compact town, with most of the key attractions only a short walk away from one another. Therefore the best way to get around, in my opinion, is on foot. The Old Town and Cartagena’s main attractions are all within walking distance of each other.

If you wish to venture outside the Old Town, into the modern surroundings, then a taxi would be easier as the modern city is further away from the cruise port.

Is it worth visiting Cartagena, Spain?

In my opinion, Cartagena is definitely worth visiting! It’s one of the best cruise ports in Spain . The town is beautiful and hosts a number of fascinating historical monuments. Additionally, the nearby beaches and stretches of countryside make the town equally perfect for those who wish to be surrounded by nature, whether that’s relaxing on a beach or taking a hike through the hills.

Another good thing about Cartagena is that it doesn’t get anywhere near as busy as Spain’s large cities, perfect if you want to beat the crowds.

What is the best time to visit Cartagena?

Cartagena can be visited throughout the year. The  best time to cruise the Mediterranean Sea  and visit Cartagena is between May and mid-October, when the temperature is hottest and you are less likely to encounter rain. It’s a peak season, so you can expect to contend with crowds more crowds at this time of year.

The best balance between having pleasant weather and fewer crowds is May, September, and October.

What is the currency in Cartagena?

The currency in Cartagena, Spain, is the Euro.

5 independent shore excursions for cruise visitors in flåm, norway.

Flåm village is nestled at the end of the spectacular Aurlandsfjord in the heart of Fjord Norway.

From a ride one of Europe’s most famous railway journeys that twists and turns through a lush valley from a mountain plateau to fjord, to a gentle stroll past waterfalls and picturesque farms to a historic church, Norway’s Flåm offers something for everyone as a cruise port call.

If you’re planning to visit Flåm on a Norwegian fjords cruise this summer, you certainly won't be alone. Last year, 112 cruise ships with almost 240,000 passengers called in at the small Norwegian village.

With the well-publicized ban on most cruise ships entering Norway’s UNESCO World Heritage listed fjords getting ever closer, the 2024 cruising season looks set to be one of the busiest ever in Flåm.

One issue with this popularity is the lack of availability of some cruise line excursions. Some popular organized trips, notably the Flåm Railway, often sell out in advance of the cruise setting sail. But even when cruise excursions are full, that doesn’t mean you are left without options.

Ride The Flåm Railway

Tourists worldwide travel to Flåm to enjoy the breathtaking views, tunnels, and waterfalls of the 12-5-mile-long Flåm Railway .

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Highlights include the photo stop at the spectacular Kjosfossen waterfall, which is at its most powerful in the spring and early summer. Make the most of the five minutes out on the platform as it’s a wonderful spot for photography.

The scenic railway journey from Flåm to Myrdal is a travel highlight of any visit to Flåm, Norway.

Although cruise excursions on the Flåm Railway sell out quickly, that doesn’t mean tickets are unavailable.

Tour operators reserve a number of carriages for use by cruise line excursions. They will be full, while there’s often still space in the regular train carriages. Book a specific departure in advance , or take a chance with availability on the day.

The train’s interior is dated, but large windows give everyone a good view. Try to board early and sit on the right-hand side from Flåm to Myrdal to get the best views. However, don't worry too much, as there are periods of impressive valley views on both sides.

The train station in Flåm is just a few minutes’ walk from the cruise ship dock, so there really is little added value by paying a lot more for the official cruise line excursion.

Fjord Sightseeing Cruise

It may seem unnecessary to get off a cruise ship and immediately board a sightseeing boat, but there are many reasons to do just that in Flåm.

Depending on your itinerary and dinner arrangements, you may miss the sailaway from Flåm. That would be a crying shame, for the hour’s sailing down the Aurlandsfjord is one of the best landscapes in the entire fjord region.

The sightseeing cruise of the Aurlandsfjord will allow you to enjoy these sights at the brightest part of the day, with the added bonus of sailing into the breathtaking Nærøyfjord, something no cruise ship is small enough to do.

A trip on the stylish all-electric fjord sightseeing ferry is time well spent when visiting Flåm, ... [+] Norway.

It’s also a chance to appreciate Norway’s most spectacular fjord scenery on a completely silent vessel. You’ll feel as if you’re gliding along the fjord on these stylish, all-electric sightseeing ferries.

When making an independent booking , take care to understand the timetable and the conditions of booking. There aren’t many departures, so you need to be sure of timings.

Explore The Fjord By Kayak

If you do plan on enjoying the Aurlandsfjord from the deck of your cruise ship, then how about exploring the fjord from a very different vantage point?

Suitable for beginners and families, a three-hour kayak tour of the fjord is available for independent bookings every day during the cruising season, at a cost of approximately $100 per person. Experienced kayakers may prefer to simply rent a kayak at a similar price for a full-day rental.

Self-Guided Cycling Tour

With flat terrain and spectacular sights in both directions, Flåm is ideal to explore by bicycle.

All-day rental starting at $42 allows plenty of time to explore the northern route along the shore of the Aurlandsfjord, and the southern route following the river into the Flåm valley to enjoy the waterfall Brekkefossen, old farmstead buildings, and the historic church.

For a helping hand, consider spending a little more to rent an electric-powered bicycle.

Old Flåm Village Walk

It’s not necessary to spend any money at all to enjoy some of the highlights of Flåm. Allow about 45 minutes for the walk to the historic Flåm church, a 17th-century wooden church located at the heart of the old village center.

The old village center of Flåm is an enjoyable walk from the modern cruise port.

There’s a lot to see along the way, from the well-kept houses and occasional train rumbling by to the attractive river and distant waterfall Brekkefossen.

For a closer look at the waterfall and a wonderful, elevated view of the village and valley, follow the signed trail from the village.

Flåm Cruise Port Planning Tips

A big question that will help you make the most of your time is how busy the port will be on the day of your visit. Check if yours will be the only cruise ship in dock using the cruise ship calendar maintained by Flåm Port .

If there’s more than one ship (it’s possible for two to visit if one anchors in the fjord), then booking all activities in advance will be essential to avoid disappointment.

Finally, only a few hundred people live in Flåm, so the village quickly becomes overwhelmed when even a relatively small cruise ship visits.

Opponents to cruise ships have become more vocal in recent years with grassroots campaigns growing in support. There are many locals who do support the industry and the economic benefit it brings, but if you’re visiting on a large vessel, keep this ongoing debate in mind when meeting locals.
