I was talking with Patrice Bailey prior to my landing in Jamaica on a cruise with RC. She recommended me to take the Dunn's Falls tour as my kids are young. We were given instructions what to do when we got off the boat. We found our tour guide Nicole. We read a lot of things about Jamaica on the internet. Its NOT true! Jamaica is the most beautiful lush country you will ever go to. Its absolutely beautiful. the people are wonderful and its safe in Jamaica. I had a 8 year old and 12 year old and no one bugged us. Everyone was so wonderful with my kids, cant say enough good things about the Jamaican people. Our Guide Nicole she knows everything about Jamaica! She lead us to a bus with a nice driver and it was air conditioned. The drive was great, nice and smooth roads. We were offered drinks in the bus which was a nice bonus. The staff from Patrice Bailey really wants you to have a great time. They take what they do so seriously. They make sure you are taken care of and you have a good time. Patrice has amazing staff. We had the worst time on this cruise, Jamaica was the only sunshine of our holiday and we will forever remember this wonderful place and its people. We will definitely be back again to visit! If your going to Jamaica, make arrangements for Patrice Bailey to take care of you, wont be disappointed.

Ultimate excursion, AWESOME experience O'shea, Perry, and others were amazing. This was my first time and I would definitelydo this again. I felt safe and well supported by the crew.

carnival excursions jamaica

We visited Jamaica this past summer on a Royal Caribbean cruise. We had two excursions planned for the day, one was to the caves and the second was the Dunn's River Falls. The experience at the falls was spectacular and the excursions personnel was always very helpful to our needs.

I can not say enough good things about Patrice Bailey and her staff. The first time we had Kay as our guide but this this time we had Ken as our driver and I do not recall the name of our guide. We disembarked the ship (Disney Fantasy) first thing in the morning and went straight to the tent in the parking lot. Our guide and driver met us by name and were immediately ready for us. We had 26 people in our party and thought we would be in two vehicles but were pleasantly surprised to find out they had a bus big enough for all of us. We had plenty of water for the kids and red stripe for the adults. It was about 1 1/2 hours to get to Blue Hole and the guide we requested was waiting for us. His name is Ken with help from Andre as well from Island Gully Falls. He is AMAZING!!! We specifically requested Glen for our group because he is great with the smaller kids. On our first trip my youngest was only 2 and he jumped all day with Glen. He carried him up and down the falls and my son was so comfortable with him it was incredible. I was extremely happy to see we were able to have him again. With a group of our size we did let smaller groups get ahead of us and we spent about 2 1/2 hours at the falls. It was just as amazing as I remembered the first time and again, Glen had my youngest with him the whole time. It was comforting knowing that Glen was encouraging us to take our time and not rush so no one was injured. After our time at Blue Hole it took us about 45 minutes to get to our lunch destination. Our guide was able to call our order in ahead and it was waiting for us when we arrived. Scotchies is such an interesting and authentic place for lunch and has been featured in Food and Wine magazine. We sat outside under a beautiful tree and enjoyed our Jamacian Jerk. We had a variety of food from chicken, sausage, pork, corn on the cob, vegetables and the best festival (like corn bread, breadsticks). Everyone found something they enjoyed. After lunch we loaded back up again for another 45 minutes back to port. This portion seemed to fly by as most of our party slept the rest of the way back. I will admit I was worried because I had planned this for only 10 people last time and having 26 people I was concerned that some people would not enjoy it as much as we did. I am happy to say, I think everyone had an amazing time. When we return to Jamaica I am 100% sure we will be booking with Patrice Bailey again. Everything was exactly what we wanted and we could not have been more pleased!

Riding Horses in Montego Bay Jamaica: Carnival Cruise Excursion

Cruising to Jamaica is an exciting trip, but most people will recommend signing up for an excursion, myself included, because Jamaica is not the safest country to embark on without experience. I highly recommend the Horseback Ride and Swim in Montego Bay, my personal favorite Carnival cruise excursion. To this day, we all claim that it was our favorite part of our entire cruise.

Table of Contents

Facts About the Carnival Cruise Excursion:

  • Cost : $99.99 / Adult and $69.99 / Child (ages 6-12)
  • Duration : 5 hours
  • Activity Level : Moderate
  • Minimum Age : 6 Years Old

What does your day look like?

Getting off the boat.

At Montego Bay, the ship pulls up to the shore and you go to the gang plank to get onto land. When you get off, there is no where to go except in this big building. You walk in and there are signs for all of the excursions offered. You line up in front of whichever one you are going on that day.

Everyone recommends that while in Jamaica, you do not go off wandering on your own when you port and that you do an excursion. We were going to explore once we got back, but were advised not to go.

Getting on the bus for transportation

Anyway, there are people there that will direct you to your bus, but make sure to pay attention, because the lines get crowded and it would be easy to accidentally get in the wrong line. They load you up onto the bus, and I am talking smack dab full, people sitting in the aisle. Then, you take off.

We had a guide that talked to us on the way there and told us about Jamaican culture and what it would look like once we got to the farm.

It was about a thirty-minute drive to the farm with the horses. There were multiple excursions that were on the same bus, so if there are people on your bus going to ride ATV’s do not panic.

Arriving at the farm

Once you get to the farm, you have time to walk around some and explore. There is a small restaurant bar, an ocean swing, the beach, and horses.

They give you time to go to the bathroom, change, and get a locker to put your things in while on the ride. You do have to pay for the locker though, so be prepared for that or prepared not to get one. We were not wearing closed toe shoes, so we had to rent some, but you could also buy them.

Closed-toe shoes were required. Then, we got fitted into a helmet and they put each person on a horse. They had stairs you walk onto to get on the horse, so if you are a klutz, like yours truly, do not worry about getting saddled onto the horse.

Riding the horses

They teach you a few basics, but the horses are so trained, you really do not have to do anything. Once you are on your horse, you go into the arena and walk in circles until everyone else is on their horse.

I know this sounds boring so far, but this part is actually really fun, because you get to see what horse each person gets, get familiar with your horse and riding it, and see other people mount their horse. Once everyone is up, you start down the trail.

riding horses in montego bay jamaica a carnival cruise excursion

Most of the ride is through a trail across the farm, which lasts about 45 minutes. There is a guide to every five people (about 30 people total) and they are awesome.

Our guide was so funny and nice and made our experience wonderful! He told us about the land, different plants, his life, the horses, the farm, and let us try different plants he saw or smell various leaves.

It was beautiful and you get to see so much of the land. I love nature so this was my favorite part.

Our guide was more than happy to take pictures as we rode of each person in our group, multiple times, so do not be afraid to bring your phone.

My brother also brought his GoPro and filmed while on the horses. This is a great option, because I could not take my phone in the water.

Riding in the ocean

Once we got back, they gave us time to change into bathing suits, because we were about to ride in the water. Then, they took about 10 people at a time through the water. You had to wear a small water life-belt thingy in the water. It was so fun and I did not stop laughing the entire time.

The guides were also having so much fun and it was contagious. This lasts about five minutes and then we were done. They helped us get off and we had the rest of the time to explore and shower if we wanted to, but we did not bring a change of clothes, so we just looked around, explored, and took pictures.

They also had professional photographers taking your picture periodically throughout the ride, so you could purchase these at that time, but honestly, we did not like any of ourselves, so we did not get any.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and definitely our favorite excursion that we did the whole time.  After you are done, you load up on the bus again and ride back.

You have time to do something else if you want to, but we just looked at the little tents and shops of souvenirs at the port and then got back on the boat to eat.

Is this Carnival cruise excursion worth the money?

So, I am a really cheap person. Therefore, for me to think/say something is worth the money, it means a lot and it was worth the money. It was by far our favorite excursion and I would definitely do it again.

You got to experience the culture, people, and land all in one excursion, plus it was a lot of fun. I would say this excursion is for everyone and something all could enjoy.

Pros and Cons:

Pros are that it is worth the money, you get to see a lot and do not leave feeling like you missed out. You can easily document your travels, there are no hidden or extra fees if you are prepared in advance, and it is so fun.

Cons are that if you are not used to horseback riding, then your back will probably start hurting, mine sure did. They advertise it as riding through water and this only lasts five minutes. Much less than expected. And they do not provide any food, which is a long time without, but you get back to the ship in time to eat lunch.

What to bring and not bring on the excursion:

With this Carnival cruise excursion, there are definitely things you need to bring. Bring a change of clothes, sunscreen, water, snack, CLOSED TOE SHOES, extra money, and a water proof case for your phone/other valuables. Other than that, you should be good!

Download a free packing list for your trip by clicking here!

Again, I highly recommend this excursion and I hope that you enjoy it as much as we did on our visit. Our cruise was through Carnival, but I am sure there are excursions like this one offered through other cruise lines or opportunites to participate even if you are not cruising.

There’s no other voyage quite like a cruise to Jamaica , the Caribbean island that’s the birthplace of both reggae music and the legendary musician Bob Marley. When your ship arrives in port, you’ll find reef-lined sandy beaches, soaring mountains, tropical rainforests, and rum cocktails you’ll be daydreaming about for months.

Jamaica is home to five cruise ports equipped to handle everything from intimate yachts to mega-ships. Ocho Rios is Jamaica’s largest port and a gateway to attractions like Dunn’s River Falls. Montego Bay is a golfer’s dream while Kingston, the Jamaican capital, offers an opportunity to visit the Bob Marley Museum and dine at a restaurant owned by Olympian Usain Bolt. Here's everything to know about booking a cruise to Jamaica .

What cruise lines sail to Jamaica?

Several cruise lines sail to Jamaica with most itineraries departing from the United States. Royal Caribbean sails to Jamaica from Tampa, Florida. Celebrity cruises to both Ocho Rios and another Jamaican port, Falmouth. Carnival has several itineraries that stop in Jamaica, including a few that sail the Panama Canal. Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises sail to both Montego Bay, located on the northern side of the island, and Ocho Rios. MSC, Norwegian , and Holland America also include Jamaica on their cruise itineraries.

MSC alone offers more than 50 cruises that stop in Jamaica.

Jamaica cruise itineraries often depart from Texas or Florida and include other Caribbean islands. Some include more adventures, sailing to Central America or through the Panama Canal.

What cruise ships sail to Jamaica?

Cruises to Jamaica tend to be longer, with many itineraries falling into the five- to seven-night range, so you’ll need more than a long weekend for this vacation. Ships sailing here tend to be larger and stacked with onboard entertainment and activities. Most ships sailing to Jamaica, like Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas , the Norwegian Escape , and the MSC Meraviglia , carry thousands of passengers, but Viking Cruises and Oceania Cruises sail to Jamaica on ships that carry 1,200 passengers or less.

Whatever kind of cruise experience you’re looking for, you can find it on a ship headed toward the sandy beaches and reggae beats of Jamaica. These are some of the best Jamaica cruises for every kind of traveler.

Which Jamaica cruise port is better?

Ocho Rios on Jamaica’s northern coast is the island's largest and best-located cruise port. It offers easy access to two of Jamaica’s top attractions—Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain, where you’ll find bobsledding and zip-lining—and several of Jamaica’s most popular activities. In Ocho Rios, you can ride horses on the beach, take a tour to learn about Bob Marley and the roots of reggae music, or relax on sandy beaches. The port is a quick walk from town, making it easy to explore on your own if you choose not to take an excursion.

What is the best month to cruise to Jamaica?

There’s no place like Jamaica to escape winter. Jamaica’s dry season stretches from mid-December through April and brings sunny days with pleasant temperatures. Cruise to Jamaica between mid-December and April for perfect beach days and good weather for exploring rainforests and local markets. Avoid cruising the Caribbean in August and September, which is peak hurricane season.

Best Jamaica cruises for solo travelers

Holland America, one of the best cruise lines for solo travelers , offers a seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary that includes a full day in port in Ocho Rios. Check out Dunn’s River Falls and go for a swim at the Blue Hole. Relax on a bamboo raft, ride horses, listen to reggae or try zip-lining. Back on board the Nieuw Statendam , enjoy having one of the ship’s 12 oceanview solo staterooms all to yourself. These solo staterooms are small —between 127 and 172 square feet— but with so much to do onboard that might not matter. The Nieuw Statendam is a Pinnacle Class ship with several live entertainment venues, an expansive fitness center, shopping, and a spa. There are multiple dining options on board, and the cruise line hosts several events for solo travelers each sailing. The Nieuw Statendam ’s Western Caribbean itinerary departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and also stops in Cozumel, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas.

Best Jamaica cruises for thrill-seekers

Royal Caribbean cruises to Falmouth, Jamaica, on the Independence of the Seas , a modern cruise ship made for unforgettable adventures at sea. Spend your Jamaica port day zip-lining, bobsledding, or snorkeling. Try white-water rafting or go tubing through the Jamaican jungle. Climb to the top of Dunn’s River Falls or opt for a lazy day on a gorgeous beach eating beef patties. Back on board the Independence of the Seas , try out the 40-foot-long FlowRider surf simulator or scale an outdoor rock climbing wall with epic ocean views. Play glow-in-the-dark laser tag or race down dueling waterslides. You might just find yourself wishing for more sea days. The ship sails from and returns to Miami . Five-night itineraries also stop in Labadee, Haiti.

Best cruise to Jamaica for families

If you’re looking for a cruise line that’s got something for everyone , MSC has you covered. The MSC Meraviglia starts its Caribbean journey in Port Canaveral, Florida, giving families a chance to visit Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, or the Kennedy Space Center before heading out on an unforgettable Caribbean vacation. The  11-night itinerary visits the Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. In Ocho Rios, guests can choose from several excursions including a traditional bamboo rafting tour. Adults may prefer the island tour and rum-tasting excursion. That excursion dives into the history of the island, taking travelers to historical sights as well as scenic spots. Guests learn about rum production on the island while sampling locally made rums. Juice tastings are available for any kids who may want to join this experience.

But there’s so much to do on the Meraviglia , it may be tough to get your kids off the ship. The ship is home to a full-size bowling alley, F1 simulators, an epic waterpark with twisty slides and a sports field. There’s also a kid’s club, several shows to choose from, and an expansive pool.

For a relaxing Jamaican cruise, jump on board the brand new Celebrity Beyond , which sails a nine-night Caribbean itinerary round trip from Fort Lauderdale. The Celebrity Beyond is the cruise line’s newest ship. It boasts 32 restaurants, bars, and lounges and has a spa that offers a selection of more than 120 treatments. The cruise makes its first stop in Grand Cayman before stopping in Aruba and Curacao. Its last stop is Falmouth, Jamaica, a town with cobblestone streets lined with Georgian architecture that sits between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. From Falmouth, cruise passengers can opt to ride a bamboo raft along the Martha Brae River, climb to the top of Dunn’s River Falls, or lounge on the beach. This is an area of Jamaica known for its long emerald rivers, caves, waterfalls, and beaches, there may be no better place to relax in Jamaica.

For a longer cruise, consider the  Celebrity Beyond ’s 11-night Southern Caribbean itinerary which adds a stop in Cartagena, Colombia.

Best cruise to Jamaica for partying

If you’re looking to party on your Jamaican cruise , look no further than Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival is the cruise line for travelers looking to let loose on vacation and is known for its fun onboard atmosphere. Carnival sails to Ocho Rios and Montego Bay from Florida.

The  Carnival Sunrise sails roundtrip from Miami to Ocho Rios, Jamaica's most popular cruise port. This five-night itinerary starts with a day at sea—the perfect way to ease yourself into vacation mode, especially if you spent the night before sailing sampling Miami’s epic nightlife. The ship’s first port is Ocho Rios, where travelers can climb the 600-foot Dunn’s River Falls, drive a dune buggy through Jamaican woodlands, swim with dolphins, ride horses on the beach or try out river tubing. The ship stops in Grand Cayman before making its way back to Miami.

Onboard, spend your sea days sipping cocktails by the pool. Spend your evenings at the Red Frog Pub, the onboard piano bar, or laughing your heart out at the ship’s comedy club.

Best megaship cruise to Jamaica

To cruise to Jamaica with everything you could ever want on board, book yourself on the Norwegian Escape , a ship built in 2015 that can accommodate more than 4,200 passengers. This is a ship with dining options to suit even the pickiest palates. There’s even an American Diner on board should you get a little homesick.

The Escape cruises to Jamaica on a  seven-day itinerary that includes stops in Cozumel, Mexico, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, in addition to Ocho Rios, where it spends a full day in port. Excursion options in Ocho Rios include a 4x4 safari to Dunn’s River Falls, island sightseeing and beach breaks.

The itinerary includes two sea days, offering plenty of time for lounging by the pool or relaxing by the spa. Or try your hand at the ship’s ropes course and catch a show at the onboard comedy club.

Best smaller ship Jamaica cruise

If you’re looking for a luxury cruise experience and a trip of a lifetime that stops in Jamaica, Viking has you covered with its  15-day Panama Canal and Central America itinerary on board the Viking Star. The Viking Star is smaller than most of the cruise ships that call on Jamaica. It accommodates just 930 guests, ensuring top-notch service for everyone on board.

Being a smaller ship, you won't find the same breadth of dining and entertainment offerings on board the Viking Star as you may on other cruise lines calling on Jamaica, but you're guaranteed not to get hungry or get bored on this luxury vessel. The Viking Star has two pools, a spa, and a fitness center. It also has a sports deck, piano lounge, and a handful of dining venues. This is a cruise line that focuses on enrichment, so expect lots of opportunities to learn about your destinations along the way.

Viking’s Panama Canal and Central America journey begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale. It takes passengers on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; Roatan, Honduras; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, before sailing through a portion of the Panama Canal. Its last stop before returning to Fort Lauderdale is Montego Bay.

Best long cruise to Jamaica

Oceania's  27-day Rome to Miami Grand Caribbean Crossing may be the most exciting way to make your way to Jamaica. This epic journey begins in Rome and spends a day sailing the Mediterranean Sea before sailing to Valencia and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain. From Spain, the Oceania Vista crosses the Atlantic Ocean for just over two weeks of hopping around some of the Caribbean's top destinations. The cruise stops in Antigua, Puerto Rico, and Cozumel, before eventually making its way to Montego Bay.

This itinerary does include several sea days, but with cabins that feel more like a home than a room on a ship, lots of great food, and a selection of cocktail experiences, you may not mind. The luxurious ship also offers cooking classes, shows, a spa, and lots of gorgeous photo spots.

The Montego Bay Bob Marley Museum Tour  will take you to Nine Mile, a quaint little village in the beautiful mountains of St Ann, Jamaica.

Each year thousands upon thousands of Bob Marley fans make their pilgrimage to the Bob Marley Museum to pay their respects and to experience the birthplace and final resting place of the King Of Reggae.

Our Bob Marley Reggae adventure begins directly from your hotel or cruise ship pier. From Ocho Rios, Nine Mile is a 1 1/2 hour drive through the countryside and is a journey that introduces you to a part of Jamaica that few visitors have the opportunity to appreciate.

Our breathtaking drive to the Graceland of Reggae begins with a tour through the famous Fern Gully, where we wind our way uphill through some of the most beautiful scenery in Ocho Rios.

Our ride continues into the Jamaican countryside as we enjoy the sounds of Bob Marley and take in the rural villages of Jamaica’s hillside. Upon your arrival to Nine Mile, you will experience the neighborhood and home that influenced Bob Marley to write lyrics for some of his most famous songs.

Your tour starts with a walk through the same house where Bob lived as a young child. Then, your Rastafarian guide will share tales of Bob Marley’s childhood and musical career.

Our Bob Marley Nine Mile Excursion is a tour for die-hard Bob Marley fans and for those seeking a better understanding of a young man whose music and vision helped change people’s thoughts worldwide. His music and message had a global effect, and his untimely death made him a legend and an icon.

On your return trip to Ocho Rios, we can stop for some shopping or visit a Local Jerk Chicken center where you can experience an authentic lunch of jerk chicken, pork, and rice & peas.

Robert Nestor Marley spoke of the simple ways of rural life. He spoke of peace, respect, and freedom. These are the values and qualities instilled during his youthful days in the small mountain village locals still call Nine Mile.

Well the best way to find out is to come and experience Jamaica Carnival for yourself! Jamaica Carnival is a fusion of incredible food, music, costumes , colour, rum and dance!

Jamaica is famous for being the home of reggae music and along with soca and calypso music forms a proud part of their national identity. Reggae, soca, dancehall, calypso dominate all the parades and parties making carnival one of their biggest cultural celebrations.

The biggest event of Jamaica carnival is the National Carnival Road March which is an electric masquerade parade with competing mas bands . It is a day where you will see thousands dance in the most stunning and colorful costumes , when loads of rum is consumed and when the whole island joins together in celebration.

In the lead up to the Jamaica National Carnival Road March there are weekly fun-filled events that occur all over the island. There are beach parties, fetes,  J’ouvert , smaller street parades, mas camps , competitions and lots of live music events. For two months before the big parade there are loads of weekly soca parties where the locals party the night away.

Carnival in Jamaica leads up to and culminates in the Jamaica Carnival Road march which is hosted in the capital city of Kingston . The National Carnival road march sees 5000 revelers partake in the event. All along the parade route are huge crowds of spectators with tents and BBQs out ready to celebrate from the sidelines.

The masquerades are dressed up in the most beautiful, colorful and magnificent costumes lighting up the streets. The costumes are adorned with jewels, feathers, headdresses, wings and come in all colours of the rainbow.

The music pumps out and grows louder as the parade approaches. It is a dance of non-stop music , dancing and rum drinking. The revelers are having the time of their life and the parade is the epitome of people uniting and living in the moment.

Fete’s Jamaica Carnival

Every year as carnival in Jamaica continues to grow and become more popular the number of Jamaica parties also continues to grow. For months prior to carnival there are lots of weekly fetes that countdown to the big carnival day. Fetes usually give way to weeklong partying that occurs during the Easter weekend.

The most popular events include a sunrise breakfast party , I love Soca & Afloat, Frenchmen events. Several Trinidadian fete promoters also host big events in Jamaica including Caesar’s Army, DJ Private Rian and Tribe to name a few. There are several different J’Ouvert parties that occur for the different bands.

Tickets to fetes can range from around $US50 to $125 depending on which ones you attend. The popular parties sell out very quickly, so if you want to attend the best ones you need to purchase your tickets quick smart!

The best way to enjoy carnival in Jamaica is to join in and play mas ! There are four carnival bands that each offer their own unique Jamaica carnival experience. The Jamaica carnival mas bands are:

  • Bacchanal Jamaica
  • Ocho Rios Carnival Band
  • Xaymaca  International
  • Xodus Carnival

Each band offers an all-inclusive carnival experience however some are better then others. Xaymaca and Xodus are both young carnival bands that are new on the scene. Honestly though it doesn’t matter which band you pick because you are bound to have the time of your life!

What To Do and see in Jamaica?

jamaica carnival

Jamaica has it all!! Stunning beaches, adventure, unforgettable experiences, a lively nightlife, delicious Jamaican cuisine and loads of friendly people. It’s really up to you if you just want to relax on a beach or if you want to be more adventures and go snorkelling or diving.

Is Jamaica Safe?

Recently Jamaica has had a bad reputation when it comes to crime. There are drug trafficking gangs across the country, and in certain parts violence and gun crime are rife. Unfortunately Tourists aren’t exempt: but the most common crime is petty theft and robberies. During Carnival however, there is a huge police presence. So be aware of your valuables at all times or even leave them back at your hotel and only bring some cash with you.

Kerwin Du Bois ‘excited’ for Carnival in Jamaica

Kerwin Du Bois, Trinidadian soca artiste and performer, delivered a passionate performance at the Campari Carnival 2024 launch.

In anticipation of Jamaica carnival in April, the soca community felt an exhilarating surge of energy at the Campari Carnival launch hosted at ROK hotel earlier this week. Renowned soca artiste Kerwin Du Bois stole the spotlight, leaving fans buzzing with excitement. Although attendees weren’t engaging in the typical carnival road revelries, they still radiated an infectious energy. Du Bois further stirred anticipation by dropping a bombshell, suggesting potential collaborations with Jamaican artistes for forthcoming carnival anthems.

In a post-performance interview, Du Bois shared insights into his return to the Jamaican scene after a brief hiatus, emphasising the importance of self-care and rejuvenation.

“Sometimes, people need a reminder, and that’s just what it is. I enjoy doing what I do. I had to take a little time off for myself. Self-love is more important than any kind of love,” he remarked, exuding confidence and gratitude for being back onstage.

Reflecting on his enduring connection with Jamaica, Du Bois shared fond memories of his previous visits, noting that the island always feels like home. “Whether it’s Tuesday night or not, whether people want to jump up or not, it’s still good vibes, good energy,” he told The Gleaner , hinting at the potential synergy between Trinidadian and Jamaican musical influences.

Du Bois, whose illustrious career spans over two decades, reminisced about his evolution from a soca producer to a prolific songwriter and performer. “Doing all of that [writing and producing] for everybody else, I decided to start to sing for myself. Although I don’t like the bright lights [and] I don’t like the stage,” he revealed, offering fans a glimpse into his artistic journey and personal preferences.

Headlines Delivered to Your Inbox

Looking ahead, Du Bois teased his participation in Jamaica carnival, expressing a longing for the infectious “road vibe” that defines the event.

“Well, you never know what could happen. I know in this creative realm of things, anything could happen [and] it could be with a Jamaican artiste. Anything could happen so we leave that window open,” he assured, fuelling speculation and anticipation among revellers.

Carnival cruise ship hits pier in Jamaica amid strong winds

A Carnival Cruise Line ship hit a pier in Jamaica amid windy weather on Tuesday, forcing it to move away and temporarily leave guests on shore.

The incident occurred on the line’s Carnival Magic ship at 11 a.m. in Ocho Rios after “strong winds and swells caused the pier fender to collapse under pressure,” according to Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli. He did not specify the wind speeds.

“There were no injuries, and all the ship's services remained operational,” he told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “The ship left the area for the safety of everyone on board, later docked at another nearby pier and guests who went ashore rejoined the ship.”

Carnival Magic is on a six-day cruise that departed from Miami on Sunday, according to CruiseMapper . The ship skipped a planned stop in Grand Cayman due to the weather conditions in the region and stayed in Ocho Rios, where it will leave Wednesday evening, Lupoli said.

The news comes after high winds caused two MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line ships to break from their moorings last month. MSC Sinfonia broke away from its moorings while in port in Syracuse, Italy and was blown into a nearby marina, and one of Norwegian Prima’s moorings detached in Galveston, Texas.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.

  • I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others.
  • I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
  • My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.

Insider Today

I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .

Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.

Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.

My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.

carnival excursions jamaica

Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.

Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.

My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.

I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.

carnival excursions jamaica

I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.

The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.

I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.

I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.

I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.

carnival excursions jamaica

Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.

These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.

I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.

On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.

carnival excursions jamaica

I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .

I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.

The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.

I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.

carnival excursions jamaica

Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.

I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.

carnival excursions jamaica

I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.

I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.
