Sunrise Tours

Sunrise Tours is a St. Louis-based, family-owned and operated travel company that arranges and books group tours of popular destinations throughout the United States and around the world. Catered predominately at the 50+ demographic, every trip is all-inclusive and features a professional tour manager/guide. In addition to St. Louis, Sunrise tours has offices in Kansas City and Indianapolis (these three cities are also departure cities for every Sunrise Tours event).

sunrise tours stl

Sunrise Tours relied heavily on repeat business and repeat customers in the past, but word of mouth marketing only goes so far. Sunrise Tours needed a way to reach a broader audience, attract new leads, and convert more sales. They had a Facebook presence and maintained an organic and spirited relationship with their most loyal followers, but that wasn’t cutting it. They needed something bigger.

Word of mouth marketing can be an excellent way to grow your business, but it’s not enough (especially in a market as competitive as that of the travel industry). And while social media is certainly a vital tool in terms of digital marketing, it’s not going to do much without a coherent and goal-oriented strategy behind it. Sunrise Tours offered an excellent product, maintained a lively presence on social media, and had swarms of satisfied (and often repeat) customers. But by using all of this to their advantage, and enhancing their presence by way of targeted advertisements, Sunrise Tours was able to attract new customers, elevate their profile within the crowded market, and boost their bottom line.

How TG Helped

Sunrise Tours began their social media partnership with Timmermann Group as a B2C marketing partner in late 2019 with aspirations of using their Facebook presence to drive website traffic, connect with potential travelers, and generate and track qualified leads.

Audience Building

Improved creative assets, goal tracking.

We started our social media efforts by building a series of cold audiences based on the makeup and demographics of existing Facebook followers. We ran a series of conversion-focused campaigns at users within a 100-mile radius of St. Louis. In addition to promoting upcoming trips, we used the platform to promote regional travel shows at which Sunrise Tours would be present. Those who clicked through to the site and filled out a general inquiry form were sent the latest Sunrise Tours catalog.

sunrise tours stl

While breathtaking sceneries and skylines made up much of their channel’s visual component, we aimed to embrace opportunities to reinforce the Sunrise Tours brand. Our design team crafted a collection of branded creative assets that gave sponsored and organic posts a more cohesive and polished look.

sunrise tours stl

Prior to our partnership, Sunrise Tours’ social media wins were measured in terms of likes, comments, and shares (and typically by existing and repeat consumers). In order to get a better grasp on exactly how effective our social efforts could become, we leveraged Google and Facebook Analytics to monitor specific user actions (reservation requests, phone number clicks, contact form submissions, booking form downloads, etc.)

sunrise tours stl

Our collaborative efforts in rejuvenating the Sunrise Tours Facebook page sparked an 82 percent increase in Facebook impressions as well as a steady increase in website traffic. Sunrise Tours cited an overall increase in catalog requests, and most importantly, bookings as well.

As we turn the page on 2020 and look ahead, we are very excited about the future of travel and about Sunrise Tours’ ability to bounce back from a challenging year. While we didn’t take many tours in 2020, we have not been idle. We have invested in new tour development, a new website and reservation system and made new contacts with travel destinations across the globe. That means that in 2021 and beyond, it is easier for you to register and travel with Sunrise Tours as we offer more opportunities to explore “off the beaten path” and iconic travel highlights around the world. As a vaccine is distributed and the pandemic recedes, we know there will be tremendous demand from people looking to make up time in achieving their travel dreams and most of the tours in this catalog will reach capacity. Policies Cancellations - Please Review - UPDATED 1/1/20 Our cancellation fee schedule varies according to the type of tour. Your deposit is fully refundable up to the final payment due date. On any cancellation made after final payment is due, the following fee schedules apply. All motorcoach cancellation fee (final payment due 45 days before departure): Cancel 45-15 days before departure 50% of total price Cancel within 15 days of departure 100% of total price Fly/Train cancellation fee (final payment due 60 days before departure): Cancel 60-30 days before departure 50% of total price Cancel within 30 days of departure 100% of total price Cruise and International tours: Refunds for cancellation of cruises and international tours depend on the cruise line or international destination. Please refer to specific tour page or call for details. FINAL PAYMENT: Final payment is due 45 days before departure for an all-motorcoach tour and 60 days before departure for tours involving air or train unless otherwise noted. Some final payment deadlines for cruises or international destinations vary so please review specific tour page or call for details. TOUR PRICE INCLUSIONS (and tipping policy): The price of the tour includes all attractions, lodging, motorcoach transportation, breakfast and dinner daily (unless noted otherwise), and tips for hotel, airport, and restaurant personnel. If the tour involves air travel, the cost of the ticket is included unless otherwise noted. Some airlines charge for checked baggage and that is not included in the tour price. Tips for the driver, tour managers, and step-on guides are left to the discretion of the traveler and should be in accordance with services received. Typical gratuities for tour manager and driver are $5-$7 per person, per day. TRAVEL PROTECTION – please review: Beginning January 1, 2020, we began offering the Travel Insured Group Deluxe travel protection for all Sunrise Tours. We believe this plan offers excellent travel protection, including coverage for pre-existing conditions in case you need to cancel for medical reasons and the flexibility to purchase coverage with final payment, at a very reasonable price. The cost of travel protection varies and can be found next to the fare listed in the catalog. We have always felt that travel protection is an individual decision, and therefore have not included it in the cost of our tours. However, we strongly recommend that you purchase the Group Deluxe travel protection for your Sunrise Tours vacation. There are many reasons (lost baggage, medical coverage, etc., please see Travel Insured Group Deluxe Plan document for details) to purchase travel protection but following are two main reasons we highly recommend the plan offered by Travel Insured. 1) Trip cancellation - If you are forced to cancel your Sunrise Tour for medical reasons (for you or an immediate family member), travel protection ensures a complete refund of monies paid (except for the premium paid for the plan). 2) Trip interruption – Unfortunately, there are circumstances that can prevent passengers from fully participating in a tour and may require an early departure or extended stay. For example, if a passenger suffers an injury which requires immediate care and prevents the traveler from continuing the tour, insurance will cover the cost of the extended stay, the cost of transportation home and the value of the missed tour (please see Travel Insured Group Deluxe plan information for details). If you do not purchase travel protection, you will personally incur these costs. From experience, we can tell you that this can be very expensive. To purchase travel protection, simply indicate that you would like to participate in the Group Deluxe travel plan on your booking form and we will add the premium due to your invoice. Payment for travel protection can be made any time until or along with final payment by check or credit card. PICK-UP POINTS: For each departure, we determine the pick-up points (listed on the booking form) to be used based on the departure route and

the number of requests for each point. If less than 4 travelers request a point, we will not utilize that point and you must choose an alternate location to join the departure. All pick-up points allow parking for your vehicle. Sunrise Tour pick-up point partners offer the use of parking spaces by Sunrise Tours travelers as a courtesy. Neither Sunrise Tours nor parking lot owners assume responsibility for incidents occurring to parked cars. You will be notified of the timing and location of pick-up points for your vacation 2-3 weeks before departure. If you would like to spend a pre-night before departure, we can provide a hotel room at some of our pick-up points at a reduced rate. If the routing allows, we may pick up along the way in outlying areas. IDENTIFICATION UPDATED - PLEASE REVIEW: A passport is required on any tour that leaves the United States, including Canada. Effective October 1, 2021, a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license (DL) or identification card (ID) will be required to board domestic flights or enter military bases or secure federal facilities unless you have a valid US passport. SINGLES REQUESTING ROOMMATES: If you would like to go on tour with us, but do not have a roommate for a specific trip, let us know and we will match you with someone else (same sex of course). Just let us know at least 60 days before departure and we will room you with another traveler at the double rate. If there is no roommate available on the tour you request, you will still only have to pay the price of a double. If you decline the roommate assigned, you will be responsible for the single supplement. Of course, if you prefer to travel individually, you can still sign up for the single fare. This offer is not valid on cruises, and some select tours. METHODS OF PAYMENT: For deposits we accept checks or cash. For final payment we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, check or cash. SEATING ON THE MOTORCOACH: Seating is assigned and will be rotated on a daily basis. Special seating requests are honored on the basis of availability. Paying the single fare does NOT ensure you will have a seat to yourself on the coach, it only ensures you a room by yourself. RESPONSIBILITY: Sunrise Tours is not responsible for any injury, delay, loss or accident due to any act or negligence on the part of any person or company rendering services on any of our tours. We reserve the right to change any itinerary. After You Book A Tour... After you have booked a tour and we have received your deposit, the following is a schedule of correspondences: 1) confirmation of deposit received 2) your final payment is due 45 days before departure for an all-motorcoach tour or 60 days before departure for tours involving air or Amtrak trains (please note you will NOT receive an invoice when final payment is due) 3) you will receive a letter about 2-3 weeks prior to departure that will include your luggage tags and important details such as pick-up times and locations, hotel phone #’s, what to bring, and a detailed itinerary (subject to change). Please bring this with you on tour. PICTURES: By signing up for and participating in a tour, you are agreeing to have any pictures taken on tour published in Sunrise Tours printed or web material. If you do not wish to have your picture used in any form by Sunrise Tours, please notify us prior to traveling. MAPS: The maps provided in this brochure are general outlines and not meant to outline specific routes to be driven. We reserve the right to change routing on any tour. LAST MINUTE TRAVELERS: We love adding last minute travelers! We are always happy to add you to a tour that isn’t sold out, even up to a few days before departure. However, please be aware that additional charges may be necessary (particularly on fly tours) if you book after final payment date. We are happy to advise you of such charges before your book.

Travel The World With Kirkwood-Based Sunrise Tours

  • Jan 24, 2020

Sunrise Tours, a local tour operator specializing in group vacation packages for retirement aged travelers, celebrated 25 years in business in 2019.   More incredible vacations are planned for 2020 including a Sunrise Tours exclusive chartered river cruise in the South of France, special itineraries to Cape Cod for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival, an exploration of California’s Coast featuring a ride on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight and much more.

Jim and Charlene Dalrymple started the company in their Des Peres basement in 1993, because Jim was burnt out from corporate America. So, with son Brent a college freshman and daughters Kristen and Debbie at Kirkwood High School, Jim left a 25-year career in group insurance sales and he and Charlene cashed in their retirement to start Sunrise Tours. Charlene taught elementary school for the first couple years until the business took off and she joined Sunrise Tours full time.

After college, Kristen and Brent joined Sunrise in 1998 and 2003, respectively. In 2008, they bought the company. Their parents remain valued advisers. Tour planner/manager Caleb Lawson is part of the office family, which now counts 8 full-time staffers in Kirkwood, two full-time employees in Mission, Kansas, and eight part-time tour managers in St. Louis.

After the first tour to New York City and Washington, D.C., in 1994, Sunrise experienced rapid growth. Jim acted as “tour manager” for every departure, logging millions of miles and visiting every state until the company began hiring additional tour managers in 2000.

Lawson has a passion for US National Parks, a frequent highlight of Sunrise Tours.   “The most gratifying part of my job is figuring out the best way for our travelers to experience our National Parks and to be there for that “Wow!” moment on tour.”

Brent derives great satisfaction in being with travelers when they experience a destination for the first time. Kristen enjoys the challenge of making sure the tour calendar features enough variety to satisfy both repeat and new customers.

Sunrise’s motor coach “happy hours” with soda, juice, beer and wine on travel days set Sunrise apart from the competition. Customers also say that included hotels and meals on Sunrise vacations are much better than the competition.
