In our best list of film and TV studio tours, we've included tours from various places in the UK, such as London, Manchester, Leeds and Kent, because after all, great telly isn't limited to one city, it's UK-wide! If the tour isn't on your doorstep, however, you'll need to travel there. Driving isn't usually the best option — traffic jams are enough to ruin anyone's day, and petrol isn't exactly cheap — so we'd recommend taking public transport. Here are the best and cheapest ways to travel across the UK.
By coach. National Express and Megabus are two of the top coach companies in the UK, with their services operating between a multitude of UK cities. Travelling by coach is almost always cheaper than catching a train, however, it'll take you longer.
For example, if you travelled from Nottingham to Manchester (let's say you were visiting the Coronation Street tour) via National Express, a one-way journey would cost £14.40 and take five hours five minutes. However, using the exact same time and date but with a train, it would cost £29.60 and take two hours two minutes.
- Shop coach journeys at National Express
- Shop coach journeys at Megabus
By train. If time is of the essence, and it usually is with day trips, we recommend travelling by train. Although it's more expensive than taking a coach, there are ways to keep the cost down, for example, with a Railcard. A Railcard will save you 1/3 of the train fare and, on average, a Railcard user saves £140 per year. For more top tips on how to get cheap train tickets , take a look at our guide.
Buy a Railcard at Trainline
If you're travelling to a film or TV studio tour outside of your hometown, you might want to book an overnight stay. After all, it can be tiring to make the journey there and back in one day, plus, it gives you the opportunity to explore more of the city.
For the top places to stay in the UK on a budget, we recommend taking a look at deal of the day site, Wowcher. The site boasts deals on four star hotels UK-wide, many of them coming with offers on breakfast, evening meals, and even bubbly.

Pinewood Studios
Pinewood Road, Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, SL0 0NH
Welcome to the beginnings of a fansite about the UK’s most famous movie studio – Pinewood. Opened in 1936, after a number of fact-finding missions to Hollywood, Pinewood Studios comprises a number of soundstages (including the recently re-built 007 Stage used for spectacular action sequences in hundreds of movies since The Spy Who Loved Me in 1964) as well as an extensive backlot, and a large mansion house and gardens. Although there’s no public access to Pinewood , you can find out more on the excellent official website .

Heatherden Hall and Gardens
Now known as the Pinewood Studios admin block and as a wedding venue, Heatherden Hall has featured in countless Pinewood Studios productions. Date of construction: Unknown (before 1883)

History of Pinewood Studios
?? Heatherden Hall, near the village of Iver in Buckinghamshire is built. Heatherden Hall is purchased by Lt. Col. Grant Morden, a Canadian financier, who transformed the mansion by adding a huge ballroom and Turkish bath.
1920s Heatherden Hall became a retreat and private meeting place for politicians and diplomats.
1921 In November 1921 the Irish Free State Treaty was signed at the Hall (agreement to form the Irish Free State).
1931 British Pathe Newsreel about Heatherden Hall
1934 When Grant Morden died in 1934 the estate was purchased at auction by Charles Boot for £30,000 who had recently inherited a large construction firm from his father Henry Boot, who died in 1931. Within twelve months Charles Boot transformed Heatherden Hall into the office building for a new movie complex which occupied the grounds, a project Boot worked on with J.Arthur Rank. There are two main fronts to the mansion, one very formal 3 story entrance and another that is mostly seen in films. A conservatory has been added to this front where the door was. Along the side is the grand Ballroom. The house has extensive grounds with formal gardens and lakes, plants and features. There are many trees surrounding the manor which is where the name “Pinewood” originated from. The house has been featured in many British films, including The Amazing Mr Blunden, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, From Russia with Love (as the SPECTRE headquarters) and the Carry On films, and in such television series as One Foot in the Grave and Midsomer Murders.
1935 November – Construction starts on the Studios.
1936 30th September – The studios are officially opened.[2] The first production to take place at Pinewood was London Melody in 1936. The first complete production (from start to end) at Pinewood was Carol Reed’s Talk of the Devil. [2] There was a celebration to launch the studio on D Stage, where London Melody was starting shooting.
1947 A landmark year for the studio, with six major productionsat Pinewood, including Oliver Twist, directed by David Lean, and the £500,000 production of The Red Shoes.
1957 Pinewood celebrates it’s 21st birthday.

1962 The association of Pinewood Studios with James Bond began with the production of Dr. No.

1969 J and K Stages built (both 110ft x 80ft) and L and M (105ft x 90ft),all four stages designed for the dual use of TV and film production. [1] Architect Michael Brown designed L & M stages.
1984 The 007 Stage is destroyed by fire during production on Ridley Scott’s epic fantasy Legend.
1985 The rebuilt 007 Stage is opened, and is renamed the “Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage”

The tour includes a walk through some of WB’s backlots – used for films and TV shows ranging from Casablanca to Friends – while the studio archive is filled with memorabilia from more hit productions, with a special exhibition dedicated to recent blockbuster franchises Batman and Harry Potter. The props department, which is also open to visitors, is the largest in the world, with more than 450,000 registered artefacts.

Associated with the making of movie classics such as Ben Hur, Cleopatra and La Dolce Vita, this major studio – the largest in Europe – offers the chance to walk in the footsteps of glamorous stars such as Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. Built in the 1930s by Benito Mussolini and a base for renowned Italian director Federico Fellini, the studio has an exhibition called Cinecittà Shows Off, which charts cinematic history with the help of costumes, design sketches and more – while tours take you through sets such as the reconstruction of Broadway used for Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. Adults €20 (for exhibition and outdoor set visit), child (6-10) €10. Guided tours in Italian and English, check website for times, cinecittasimostra.it . Open daily, except Tues, 9.30am-6.30pm
Weta, Wellington
We all know that New Zealand was the location for director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Ring’s and Hobbit films, and you can visit the Shire and other spots from Middle Earth with a tour of the Hobbiton movie set in Waikato, on the North Island. But for a different NZ film experience, try a tour of the Weta Workshop; the special effects and prop company in Wellington where the stunning costumes for Jackson’s films were created. Famed for innovations such as PVC chainmail (12.5 million links were manufactured for Lord of the Rings), the workshop also produced designs for Thunderbirds Are Go and King Kong. Tours take you behind the scenes of the workshop in action, as well as inside the “Weta Cave”, an incredible shop-meets-archive of props and collectibles. Weta Cave and workshop tour, adults £12, children 6-12 £6, wetaworkshop.com . Open daily 9am-5.30pm.
La Cité du Cinéma, Saint Denis, France

Inside the 220m-long, 18m-high space are displays of sets and costumes from films such as the Fifth Element, and behind-the-scenes stories of “Hollywood sur Seine”. The studiowas the brainchild of leading French director Luc Besson, who came across the abandoned plant during the shooting of Léon, and was inspired to create a film-making hub to compete with Pinewood and Cinecittà. It opened in 2012 and since then has been used for shooting films including The Family, Taken 2 and 3 and the Transporter Refuelled. Film City, Mumbai
Bollywood’s spiritual homeland, Film City (almost all Bollywood films have, in part, been filmed here) opened to the public just two years ago. Since 2014, it’s been possible to go on tours of the vast complex, which produces more than 100 films a year across 42 outdoor shooting locations and 16 studios. Guided tours venture to some of these locations, including a helipad, a temple and a church and – if possible – stop by a set while a shoot is in action.
Two-hour guided tour in Hindi and English, £6, mumbaifilmcitytours.com
Paramount, Los Angeles
The US’s oldest running studio, Paramount is behind mega-hits such as Titanic, Forrest Gump … and Transformers. Today, the studio covers 65 acres with 30 stages (superstition dictates that there’s no stage 13, however). There’s a $1.5m reconstruction of a New York street – with 10 distinct backdrops – as well as a huge Blue Sky Tank. Visitors are led by a guide behind the scenes on the lot; there’s also an option to do a late-night after-dark tour, with torches provided. Two-hour tours $55, advance booking required. paramountstudiotour.com . Open daily, tours take place every half hour from 9am-4pm
Atlas Film Studios, Morocco
In terms of acreage, Atlas is the world’s largest film studio. Of course, it’s easy to spread out when you’re in the middle of the desert. Located 5km west of the city of Ouarzazate, Atlas saw the filming of various dusty location-set movies: the Mummy, Alexander the Great, Black Hawk Down and several of the Star Wars saga. There are giant Egyptian-style statues guarding a replica tomb, and a huge colosseum used for the filming of Gladiator. It’s fair to say this studio is epic by name and epic by nature.
Adult £9.60, children 6-12 £6.75, studiosatlas.com . Open daily 8.15am-5.15pm (Oct-Feb) and 8.15am-6.45pm (Mar-Sept)
Warner Bros Studio, Leavesden, UK
New Zealand may be a hotspot for Hobbit hunters but in the UK the Harry Potter films have turned Warner Bros Studios near Watford into a pilgrimage site for fans. The walking tour takes visitors up close to the sets, costumes and props used in the films. You can step inside Dumbledore’s office and wander down Diagon Alley, as well as taking a look at well-known magical items such as Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle. You’ll also learn about the technical side of creating one of the most successful film series of all time, with insight into the special effects and animatronics. Adults £35, children 5-15 £27, under 4s free (but ticket booking still required), family ticket £107 (two adults, two children), wbstudiotour.co.uk . Open daily, opening times vary, check website for details
Studio Ghibli Museum, Tokyo
The character Totoro awaits visitors at the entrance of this shrine to the work of Japan’s leading animation studio. The museum is designed to recreate the essence of the magic worlds found in many of Studio Ghibli’s films, with forest animals and sprites tucked away and waiting to be discovered by eagle-eyed visitors. Executive director Hayao Miyazaki stipulated that the museum should be “put together as if it were a film” and small children should be “treated as if they were grownups”, and these threads run through the design of each vibrant room. Fans will be pleased to know that a giant stuffed version of the Cat Bus - the grinning, hollow-bodied cat that transports the characters in My Neighbour Totoro – can be found on the second floor. Adults £6.50, children 7-12 £2.50, 13-18 £4.50, ghibli-museum.jp . Open daily, except Tues, from 10am-6pm

Budget: Fulwell 73 and MP join calls for up to £20m to make Sunderland film studios reality
- Entertainment
- Monday 4 March 2024 at 10:29pm
Kris Jepson
Correspondent, ITV News Tyne Tees
Kris Jepson reports on plans to make Sunderland home to a major film production hub, and what is needed to get it off the ground
The scene is set for Sunderland to build one of Europe’s biggest film studios.
But in order for action, those behind the major plans have said investment from government is a must.
Fulwell 73, which produced the Netflix hit Sunderland Til I Die, and partners Cain International, has called for this week’s budget to deliver up to £20m for each of the next 10 years to make it happen.
Leo Pearlman, one of the Fulwell 73 partners, told ITV Tyne Tees that the region was "crying out" for government support, and the move could help add billions of pounds to the UK's creative worth.
"The UK creative industry needs a second major production hub and the North East can provide this," he said. "This is not about the UK doing the North East a favour, it's about the UK needing the North East, and needing this studio."
Private backers have already committed £450m to the project, which would see the development of FulwellCain's Crown Works Studios on a huge piece of land between Sunderland city centre and the Northern Spire Bridge.
The application itself is due to be considered by Sunderland City Council this month.
The proposals would deliver a film industry hub of more than 150,000 square metres, including 19 soundstages with supporting production offices and workshops, management offices, a vendors village and training academy.
Ahead of Wednesday’s budget, local MPs are already lobbying the Chancellor, who himself in November last year expressed the desire to one day see a "Sunderland Barbie".
Bridget Phillipson, MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, and Shadow Secretary of State for Education, said: "I've written to the Chancellor making the case for the development [and] the economic benefits it could bring.
"I'll be looking very closely at the budget on Wednesday and hopefully there'll be good news from the Chancellor."
Plans for the studio are projected to make £336m a year for the local economy while also creating 8,500 new jobs.
For production companies in the area like Foresight Studios, it is an exciting prospect.
Lee Daymond, co-director of Foresight Studios, said: "It would mean the opportunity for further growth.
"For us we've had a slow, steady growth and having a big injection of something big and exciting like that on the banks of the Wear hopefully brings new supply chain opportunities."
North East Screen believes the region is perfectly set for a thriving film and TV industry. The region has 12 possible productions in the pipeline this year, up from three last year.
Alison Gwynn, North East Screen's chief executive, said: "The opportunity for more and more work - the region is open for business.
"It's creating lots of jobs, it's creating lots of energy but what we really need is a studio so we can have those productions stay longer and we can attract more big budget feature films into the region."
Some argue the project should be privately funded, but with the biggest investment in the city since Nissan, the focus will be firmly on Jeremy Hunt and his red case on Wednesday.
