Caribbean climate is an alluring blend of tropical heat and cooling sea breezes, a paradise that welcomes sun-seekers year-round. But to pinpoint the best time for Caribbean cruises in 2024, consider a few factors.

Typically, the prime time to cruise the Caribbean is from December through April , when the weather is warm, the skies are clear, and there’s minimal rainfall. These months are ideal for sunbathing in Key West or exploring the private islands offered by various cruise lines. However, be prepared for higher cruise fares during this peak period, and possibly larger crowds in ports like Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral.

Off-peak cruising, during the summer and fall, can be a mixed bag. On one hand, you’ll find less crowded ships, lower prices (especially with prices online reflecting discounts), and more itinerary choices, including the Southern and Western Caribbean routes. On the other hand, it is also hurricane season, and though ships have sophisticated forecasting systems to avoid storms, there is a higher chance of rainy days and possible itinerary changes.

Looking for more detailed information on the best and worst times to cruise the Caribbean? We got you covered here .

Understanding Cruise Itineraries

Caribbean cruise itineraries are as diverse as the islands themselves. Common routes include the Western Caribbean, with stops at destinations such as Grand Cayman and Costa Maya, and the Southern Caribbean, which often includes ports like San Juan and the British Virgin Islands. Each itinerary offers its own unique experiences, whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both.

In 2024, several cruise lines are shaking things up with unique or new itineraries. For instance, some Royal Caribbean sailings departing from Florida are featuring extended stays at their private island , allowing guests to enjoy nighttime activities for the first time. On other Carnival Cruise and Celebrity Cruises itineraries, lesser-known Caribbean gems are being included, giving passengers the chance to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations.

When choosing the right itinerary, consider what you most want from your cruise. If you’re keen on water sports and ancient civilizations, a Western Caribbean itinerary could be perfect. But if you’re more into exotic flora and fauna, and less crowded ports, then a Southern Caribbean cruise might be your best bet. Always look closely at the shore excursions available at each port to make sure they align with your interests. And remember, 2024 is your year for an extraordinary Caribbean cruise experience!

Travel Insurance and Cancellation Policies

Taking a vacation should be all about relaxation and enjoyment. To keep it that way, securing travel insurance is a must. Think of it as a safety net, protecting you from unexpected situations that could otherwise put a damper on your trip, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage.

When selecting a travel insurance policy, ensure it covers the key aspects of your journey, from cruise fare and port expenses to shore excursion credits. Remember, not all policies are created equal, so it’s essential to read the fine print and understand what’s covered and what’s not. You can grab a quick quote here . Your credit card expiration date could also influence your insurance purchase, so keep that in mind.

Cruise cancellation policies are another crucial part of planning your trip. Typically, these policies provide a refund (either full or partial) if you need to cancel your trip by a certain deadline. In 2024, some cruise lines might be offering more flexible cancellation policies in response to the ongoing uncertainties of the pandemic. Always ensure you understand the cancellation policy before you make your cruise deposit.

Packing for a Caribbean Cruise

Packing for a Caribbean cruise is part art, part science. We’re going to provide you with some quick tips here, but if you’d like a more in-depth guide for packing for your Caribbean cruise you can bookmark this post here . Now, here are some general tips and specific items you might want for your 2024 cruise:

Clothing : Pack a variety of lightweight, casual clothing for daytime and a few dressier options for evenings. Don’t forget swimwear and a good sun hat. If your cruise line offers a free room upgrade to a suite category stateroom, you may also want to pack some fancier clothes for private dining or special events.

Footwear : Comfortable walking shoes are essential for on-shore excursions. You’ll also want sandals or flip-flops for the beach and pool.

Toiletries : While most ships provide basic toiletries, you might prefer to bring your favorites from home. Remember to pack travel-sized sunscreen and insect repellent.

Accessories : A reusable water bottle can keep you hydrated during excursions. Consider a waterproof phone case or dry bag to protect your electronics.

Documents : Don’t forget your passport, driver’s license, credit cards, and any necessary visas. It’s also wise to bring printouts of your travel insurance policy, cruise itinerary, and emergency contact numbers.

Travel Tips for First-Time Cruisers

First-time cruisers, we’ve got you covered! If you’re looking to enjoy one of the best Caribbean cruises of 2024 as your first ever cruise experience, here are some insider tips to help guide you:

Plan Ahead : Research your cruise ship and itinerary thoroughly before your trip. Understand the dining options, on-board activities, and shore excursion credits. Consider pre-booking specialty dining or popular shore excursions as this can reduce your stress as the trip gets closer.

Pack Wisely : Aside from clothes and toiletries, pack essentials like travel documents, prescription medications, and a small first-aid kit. Don’t forget seasickness remedies just in case!

Budget for Extras : Remember that not everything on the cruise is included in the fare. Set a budget for extras like specialty dining, spa treatments, premium drink packages, and on-shore excursions. If you don’t want to break the bank, look for discounts and all-inclusive promotions!

Stay Connected : Check with your cruise line for internet package options if you need to stay connected. Be aware that connectivity might be slower or unavailable at some points when the ship is at sea, so don’t plan on 100% reliability.

Take Advantage of On-board Perks : Most cruises offer free bonuses like room upgrades, specialty dinners, or on-board credits. If you’re not booking your cruise today, consider subscribing to some of your top-choice cruise lines newsletters so you can start receiving their special offers! Be sure to take advantage of these to enhance your cruising experience in 2024.

The Caribbean is arguably the most popular cruise destination, and therefore nearly every cruise line has itineraries across the Eastern, Western or Southern Caribbean -- from the world's largest ships to small sailing yachts. Examples of cruise lines that go to the Caribbean include MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Viking Ocean, Princess and Windstar. To help you decide: Compare Top Cruise Ships in the Caribbean .

What are some things to do in the Caribbean?

Apart from beaches and bars, the Caribbean contains endless islands with unique identities that offer historical and cultural attractions as well as active pursuits. Hike the Virgin Islands National Park in St. John, USVI; snorkel an underwater sculpture park in Grenada or zip line in an eco park in St. Maarten. For just a sample of what to do, check out: Best Western Caribbean Shore Excursions .

Do you need a passport to take a cruise to the Caribbean?

You can visit the Caribbean without a passport on a closed-loop sailing (one that begins and ends in the same U.S. port). Examples include cruises that depart and return to Galveston, Tampa, Baltimore or Orlando. Some Caribbean ports, including Martinique and Guadeloupe, will not allow cruisers to get off the ship and enter the country without a passport, so check your itinerary and cruise line instructions.

What should I pack for a cruise to the Caribbean?

In addition to your lightweight clothes, pack sun protection while visiting the Caribbean -- and consider reef-safe sunscreen and bug spray. Sun showers can happen, so a thin waterproof layer or umbrella might keep you dry during a surprise thunderstorm.

Royal Caribbean's new Icon of the Seas will be world's biggest cruise ship, with room for nearly 10,000 people

Erica Silverstein

Royal Caribbean has done it again. The cruise line has announced it's building the largest cruise ship ever — even bigger than its recently unveiled Wonder of the Seas, the current record-holder for world's largest cruise ship . The new Icon of the Seas will carry 7,600 passengers at maximum occupancy (or nearly 10,000 people when you account for the crew) when it first sets sail with guests Jan. 28, 2024.

When completed, the ship will be 20 decks high and 1,198 feet long and measure 250,800 gross tons. To compare, Wonder of the Seas is 1,188 feet long and measures 235,600 tons. It carries 7,084 passengers at maximum occupancy (all berths filled).

However, Icon of the Seas will only have 2,805 cabins compared to Wonder's 2,867 — despite carrying more people when all berths are filled. That's because Royal Caribbean is targeting this ship to families and planning for the ship to sail with more cabins carrying more than two passengers.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Like Wonder, Icon of the Seas will have eight neighborhoods (areas of the ship themed around a type of activity). Five are new to Icon, and three are returning from previous Oasis-class ships (such as the Suite Neighborhood, Royal Promenade and Central Park). As befitting the world's new largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas will have plenty of mind-blowing and biggest-ever attractions, including:

Category 6, the largest water park at sea: Located in the new Thrill Island top-deck neighborhood, this active area features a whopping six water slides, including an open free-fall slide, the tallest drop slide at sea, family raft slides that accommodate four riders at once and two mat-racing slides. This area of the ship also includes a ropes course-style attraction around a giant version of the ship's crown-and-anchor logo.

AquaDome, an indoor AquaTheater: Royal Caribbean has taken the back-of-the-ship AquaTheater found on its Oasis-class ships (home to acrobatic and diving shows) and brought it forward, up to the top of the ship and indoors into a multipurpose space with huge floor-to-ceiling windows, offering 220-degree views. Also in this space will be restaurants and bars. Royal Caribbean fans might notice some similarities with the Two70 entertainment space from the line's Quantum-class ships.

Three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse: The evolution of Royal Caribbean's enormous two-deck-high Ultimate Family Suite found on Oasis-class ships will be Icon's three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse. The giant suite will not only feature adult and kid bedrooms, family-focused living areas and loads of sea views, but it will also have a fenced-in outdoor backyard play area with direct access to Surfside, the new neighborhood dedicated to young families.

Surfside will feature splash areas for babies and kids, as well as relaxing pools and lounge spaces for parents, family-friendly eateries and shops, a new pool-themed version of Royal Caribbean's carousel and a bar with "mommy and me" matching mocktails for kids and cocktails for grownups. Additional new family cabins and suites will surround the Surfside neighborhood and the area will have easy access to the Adventure Ocean kids club and other ship areas popular with families. (It will also have an entrance slide.)

First suspended infinity pool and swim-up bar at sea: Above Surfside is an infinity pool, suspended over the back of the ship. It's surrounded by the Hideaway, a beach club-inspired neighborhood full of terraced sun decks and convenient bars.

Four of the ship's seven pools will be found in the three-deck Chill Island pool area, with plenty of ocean views from the watery play spaces. Among the pools is Royal Caribbean's first swim-up bar; another is what Royal is claiming to be the largest pool at sea. There will also be an adults-only pool area and another infinity-edge pool. Cabanas to rent will be available in this neighborhood.

True ship-within-a-ship enclave with largest-ever Suite Neighborhood: On Wonder of the Seas, Royal Caribbean came the closest to creating an exclusive, self-contained suite enclave, akin to Norwegian Cruise Line 's The Haven or MSC Cruises ' Yacht Club. That concept comes into its own on Icon of the Seas with the line's largest-ever Suite Neighborhood that's three decks high and features a two-story Coastal Kitchen restaurant (exclusive to suite guests and Royal Caribbean's most loyal guests) and The Grove, a new multilevel sun deck with a pool, hot tub and Mediterranean restaurant.

It's the first Royal Caribbean ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas and equipped with fuel cell technology. It's also able to hook up to shoreside power when available in port, has a state-of-the-art waste management system and can convert engine heat to power.

Fan favorites returning to Icon of the Seas include the shopping/dining/drinking complex of the Royal Promenade; the greenery- and restaurant-filled Central Park; miniature golf, an ice skating rink, rock climbing and the FlowRider surf simulator; and popular restaurants, such as Giovanni's Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar (now on the Royal Promenade) and Izumi for Asian cuisine (now in Central Park with an expanded hibachi space).

Icon of the Seas will have 28 cabin and suite types to suit every type of traveler, including the aforementioned family cabins, inside cabins with extra-large walk-in closets and panoramic ocean-view rooms in the AquaDome.

Deal watch: Royal Caribbean is selling fall cruises for under $100

The ship will sail weeklong Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, and each will visit Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , with its multiple beaches and Thrill Waterpark, home to 13 waterslides. Bookings open Monday for Royal Caribbean's past guests and Tuesday to the public.

Icon of the Seas is just the first of three sister ships Royal Caribbean has on order for delivery by 2026 that will represent an all-new class of vessels at the line — to be called the Icon class. The line also has one more Oasis-class ship on order for delivery in 2024.

Why Royal Caribbean isn't going all in on massive cruise ships despite the wild success of its new Icon of the Seas

  • Royal Caribbean International has unveiled a swath of giant cruise ships over the past few years.
  • Its CEO said its new world's largest ship, the  Icon of the Seas,  is its "best-selling product" ever.
  • But the cruise line doesn't plan on going all in on megaships forever.

Insider Today

Earlier this year, guests at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island were the first to revel at the historic sight of the world's largest cruise ships, Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, docked side-by-side.

The vessels towered over their communal dock like skyscrapers, casting a dark shadow over their relatively tiny shared pier.

Together, they can accommodate about 19,250 people.

At 1,196 feet long and weighing 248,663 gross tons, the Icon of the Seas is a sight to behold. When it launched in late January, the giant vessel upstaged its eight-foot shorter predecessor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's biggest.

At the time, it was no surprise: Every new Royal Caribbean ship seemed to dethrone another Royal Caribbean ship for this title.

But not for long.

The company's smaller ships, important for diverse trips, are aging.

The company is synonymous with its mega vessels. And they've been mega-hits: Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, has repeatedly called the Icon of the Seas the "best-selling product" in the company's history.

Related stories

Royal Caribbean is set to launch four more megaships by 2028 — representing about a third of its total fleet. So far, most of the megaships' scheduled sailings are in the Caribbean.

The other 21 smaller vessels tend to have more specialized itineraries, Patrick Scholes, the managing director of lodging and leisure-equity research at Truist Securities, told Business Insider.

Given their trimmer sizes, these vessels can operate more sailings outside the Caribbean , which often reel in high fares and customer satisfaction for the company, Jay Schneider, the chief product-innovation officer at Royal Caribbean Group, told reporters in January. Think of the Mediterranean, Alaska, and South Pacific itineraries — the latter are especially important as the cruise line continues to ramp up business in Asia.

But these destination-flexible cruise liners are aging as Royal Caribbean continues to unveil their giant counterparts. The company launched its four oldest Vision-class ships, with a maximum 2,730-guest capacity, between 1996 and 1998.

They're tiny and old compared to the 2-month-old, 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas .

Looking ahead, Royal Caribbean plans to return to the basics: smaller cruise ships.

Despite the cruise line's success with mega-vessels, Schneider said Royal Caribbean is now considering a new class of ships that would start "smaller" — noting that he was "careful to say small, but less-than-large."

"The reality is, families want to go on vacations not just in the Western and Eastern Caribbean where a ship like Icon can get into," Schneider said. "They want to stay with our brand and journey to different destinations that require more versatility in ship size."

Desirable destinations such as French Polynesia and Venice, Italy, have limited visiting cruises , including size restrictions, to curb pollution and overcrowding. But, as Schneider said, small-vessel-enabled specialized itineraries are also important to travelers.

Giant mass-market floating resorts also often attract first-time cruisers, enamored by their family-friendly water parks and Broadway-style shows. But after a few good vacations at sea, these no-longer-new-to-cruising guests might start craving quieter ships or more bespoke itineraries.

"Alaska cruises tend not to be the first-time cruiser," Scholes told BI. "I don't really see Icon of the Seas doing a Norwegian Fjord or Alaska trip."

Plus, "there's probably only so much demand for these giant ships," Scholes said.

Royal Caribbean has already succeeded in the first part: bringing in a swath of new cruisers with its megaships. Now, it has to retain them.

  • Royal Caribbean has been increasingly targeting multigenerational families.
  • The cruise line's president and CEO said its new Icon of the Seas megaship is a "great example."
  • I went on the world's largest cruise ship and saw how it could appeal to younger and older guests.

Royal Caribbean has a secret to its smashing success.

No, it's not its cruise ships' water parks or Broadway-style shows.

It's you, your parents, and your young children. Or, as the industry calls it, "multi-generational families."

In 2023, Royal Caribbean's bookings hit an all-time high ahead of the launch of its newest ship, the Icon of the Seas.

Interest has yet to wane: The three strongest booking weeks in the company's history were at the start of 2024 and "wave season," when cruise lines typically roll out flashy discounts to incentivize reservations .

Royal Caribbean Group has half as the number of available cabins in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same time in 2023. <a>Brittany Chang/Business Insider</a>

Sure, its achievement is in line with the rest of the mass-market cruise industry.

Companies such as Carnival and Norwegian have also seen wild success over the last year, with some now running low on cabins and others charging fares surpassing pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels.

But Royal Caribbean's success, in particular, could be due to its shifting attempt to win over families .

<p>The cruise line invited me on Icon's complimentary preview cruise in late January, a week before its official debut.</p><p>During my three nights at sea, I saw the cruise company's CEO's claims of "Instagrammable elements" almost everywhere I looked.</p>

Great timing: More people want to cruise with their kin now.

The trade group Cruise Line International Association called multigenerational cruising one of the top 15 trends in a September 2023 report, noting that 73% of responding cruisers said they're traveling with at least two generations of family members .

<p>Like other cruise lines, the company now aims to poach families considering land-based vacations. Think US theme park capital, Orlando.</p><p>"We've started this transition from being a traditional cruise vacation to being a multi-generational family option that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Orlando and Las Vegas," Jason Liberty, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, told investors in February.</p><p>To do this, Royal Caribbean has been "acutely focused" on this family segment, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, told investors on the same call. "And I think <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-royal-caribbean-new-icon-of-the-seas-cruise-ship-2022-10">Icon of the Seas</a> is a great example of that."</p>

Royal Caribbean says these travelers are its bread and butter.

Like other cruise lines, the company now aims to poach families considering land-based vacations. Think of the US theme-park capital, Orlando.

"We've started this transition from being a traditional cruise vacation to being a multi-generational family option that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Orlando and Las Vegas," Jason Liberty, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, told investors in February.

To do this, Royal Caribbean has been "acutely focused" on this family segment, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, told investors on the same call. "And I think Icon of the Seas is a great example of that," Bayley said.

<p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-royal-caribbean-new-icon-of-the-seas-cruise-ship-2022-10">six-slide park</a> towers atop the ship like a bowl of rainbow spaghetti, an obvious marker of the vessel while it's homeported at Miami's heavily trafficked cruise terminal.</p><p>I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the most photographed amenities on the 20-deck ship.</p>

On paper, it’s easy to see how the world’s largest cruise ship appeals to young children.

I joined the ship's complimentary, three-night preview sailing on January 20.

Its flashy, kid-friendly amenities — a short list of which includes a six-slide waterpark, a theme-park-like thrill ride, and a mini-golf course — consumed most of my time .

<p>Thrill Island is home to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coolest-features-royal-caribbeans-new-largest-cruise-ship-2022-11">Icon of the Seas' best amenities</a>.</p><p>Adrenaline addicts can get their fix at the water park's six slides, surf simulator, and Crown's Edge rope course that suspends participants more than 150 feet above the water.</p><p>For more nervous travelers, this area also has a sports court, mini-golf course, and rock climbing wall.</p>

But if you pay close attention, you might notice the little designs and amenities that make it a great option for parents and grandparents too.

The water park is a good example.

Not every adult would love the 46-foot-tall drop slide. But children and their parents could gleefully go a few rounds on the multi-person raft slides .

<p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coolest-features-royal-caribbeans-new-largest-cruise-ship-2022-11">Icon of the Seas' amenities</a> also include the more peaceful mini-golf course, sports court, rock climbing wall, and surf simulator, all located a few feet next to (and below) Crown's Edge's elevated course.</p>

Activities such as the rock-climbing wall, the mini-golf course, and the Crown's Edge thrill 'ride' are all near the water park.

Grandparents could spend an hour playing mini-golf with their grandchildren.

But if they prefer to sit out, they can watch their little ones from the adjacent covered lounge, where they can sip on a drink and pick at finger foods instead .

<p>Reprieve from the army of screaming children can be found in no-kid zones like the DJ-helmed Hideaway. Here, adults can luxuriate in a beach club-like suspended infinity pool with a cocktail in hand and no kids in sight.</p>

Or they can head to the adult-only infinity pool and bar behind the mini-golf course and water park.

A "family vacation" doesn't mean the family has to stick together for the entire trip.

Instead, on Icon of the Seas, adults can lounge around the ship's de-facto pool club, mai tai in hand, while their children spend their afternoon running around the activity-filled deck .

<p>Surfside was designed for families with children six years old and younger.</p><p>This colorful getaway — complete with a giant pink flamingo and an eclectic carousel — is where the youngest guests can seek out daytime romps around the water playground and nighttime story readings.</p>

Like most cruise ships, bars are littered throughout the 1,198-foot-long, 20-deck vessel.

There's even a watering hole in the one neighborhood designed for toddlers, Surfside.

Large candy-shaped decals line Surfside's walls while a giant flamingo grounds the outdoor space. In between, there's a carousel, small dry and water playgrounds, and a pay-to-play arcade .

<p>For supervising adults, Surfside has a watering hole: Lemon Post, which flexes lemonade-stand-inspired drinks, both alcoholic and not.</p><p>The bar has great views of the water playground, so parents can sip while their kids can play.</p><p><span>Across the way, there's also an all-day brunch restaurant where children eat for free, creating several spaces for multi-generational families to spend time together.</span></p>

But just because your toddler can't drink doesn't mean you can't, either.

For supervising adults, Surfside has a watering hole: Lemon Post, which flexes lemonade-stand-inspired alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.

The bar has great views of the water playground, so parents can sip while their kids play.

Across the way, there's also an all-day brunch restaurant where children eat for free, creating several spaces for multigenerational families to spend time together .

<p>College Me would've been delighted by the swim-up bar, walk-up Champagne kiosk, and do-it-yourself bar crawl at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/royal-caribbean-wonder-of-the-seas-worlds-largest-cruise-tour-2022-12#this-karaoke-bar-is-centered-in-the-royal-promenade-neighborhood-42">Royal Promenade</a>.</p><p>However, boring Adult Me was surprisingly satisfied with every watering hole's "mocktail" options.</p>

One of the ship’s seven pools has a swim-up bar.

Children can splash around while their grandparents unwind with a cocktail. Are you sensing a theme yet?

Or, like most other cruise ships, parents can head to the spa after sending the young ones to the children's and teen's clubs .

<p><span>I have vague childhood memories of hating cruises — and cruise shows. I remember them being tacky, boring, and plotless.</span></p><p><span>I wanted an exciting performance. Where are the dramatics?! The plot twists?!</span></p><p><span>I didn't ask to be fidgeting or sleepy during these shows, but the singers doing boring and campy covers of oldies hits surely did both for me. (Can you tell I was later diagnosed with ADHD?)</span></p>

To my surprise, the cruise ship’s shows could also delight travelers of all ages.

I have vague childhood memories of hating cruises — and cruise shows. I remember them being tacky, boring, and plotless.

I wanted an exciting performance. Where are the dramatics?! Where are the plot twists?!

I didn't ask to be fidgety or sleepy during these shows, but the singers doing boring and campy covers of oldies hits surely helped me do both. (Can you tell I was later diagnosed with ADHD?)

<p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-royal-caribbeans-icon-of-seas-different-photos-2023-7">Icon's shows</a> include an ice skating performance and a water-based spectacular with nine-foot-tall robotic arms and high divers.</p><p>For Broadway enthusiasts, the ship also hosts a rendition of "The Wizard of Oz." As an anti-cruise, anti-musical cynic, the musical was, I hate to admit, impressive and entertaining. Hard not to be childishly delighted by the sight of Dorothy and Toto flying around the theater in a large suspended bed.</p>

Fortunately, the shows on the Icon of the Seas were good.

Two decades later, I still don't love most song-and-dance performances.

But I'll admit, the Icon of the Seas' shows were spectacular enough to win me over. The rendition of the Broadway hit "Wizard of Oz," which featured a flying bed and "monkeys," would've delighted kid me .

<p>This display of divers, nine-foot-tall robotic arms, synchronized swimmers, and skateboarders replaces the typical (ahem, cringe) cruise song-and-dance show.</p><p>No ice skaters are in this performance, though — they're busy with the ship's other ice skating show.</p>

And I have no doubt even the most bored kid would also love 'Aqua Action!'

At times, I found the striking display of divers, nine-foot-tall robotic arms, and synchronized swimmers a bit cringey — especially the segment where the swimmers danced with flashlights.

But it was still an impressive show of acrobatic talent — enough to delight attendees of all ages.

If your children enjoy Cirque du Soleil-like acts, they will surely like "Aqua Action!"

<p>"Ya like jazz?" Good. Empire Supper Club's multi-course meal pairs options like rabbit and oysters Rockefeller with cocktails and live jazz.</p>

In terms of dining, parents and their parents could be charmed by the ship’s plushest offering, the Empire Supper Club.

A meal at the Empire Supper Club — meant more for adults than children — includes several courses, cocktail pairings, and live music. At $200 a person, it's the most upscale restaurant on the ship.

Yes, there's a dress code. And yes, kids are allowed, as well .

<p>If you choose to booze it up, the 1,198-foot-long, 250,800-gross-ton <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/royal-caribbean-star-of-the-seas-icon-of-the-seas-2023-10">giant cruise ship</a> likely won't be the cause of your seasick (hangover) symptoms — I, the self-proclaimed Queen of Motion Sickness, barely felt it move during my three-night sailing.</p>

The ship’s seemingly never-ending access to alcohol and the opportunity for fine dining could appeal to most parents and grandparents.

The family-oriented waterslides could be a big hit with all demographics as well.

But in my opinion, the most subtly successful way the ship targeted multigenerational groups of guests was through the proximity of relaxing lounges to children-oriented amenities such as the water park .

<p>I can be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-ships-compared-norwegian-prima-royal-caribbean-wonder-of-the-seas-2023-11">a picky cruise cynic.</a> But I have a right to be disgruntled by a stateroom bathroom so small, it made a cryotherapy chamber look like a mansion.</p>

So far, targeting these diverse age groups has been paying off: The new ship has been a massive success.

The Icon of the Seas' fares have been "double or triple" Royal Caribbean's previous new ship launches, Liberty told investors in February .

<p>Because plenty of other people don't. </p><p>Michael Bayley, the cruise line's CEO and president, has been touting the Icon as "the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/icon-of-the-seas-ultimate-family-townhouse-75000-week-photos-2023-2">best-selling product</a> in the history of our business."</p>

These high rates don’t seem to impact reservations. Bookings for the new vessel have also been 'phenomenally strong,' Liberty said.

The company saw a record-setting booking day when it opened reservations for Icon of the Seas in October 2022 — over a year before the ship's launch.

A few months later, Bayley called the ship the "best-selling product in the history of our business."

Royal Caribbean announced suspensions of planned stops to Labadee, the cruise line’s private resort on Haiti’s northern shore, in the wake of continued violence and lawlessness in the island nation.

The announcement on Thursday came a day after Royal Caribbean said it would continue stopping at its private resort while “monitoring” for safety threats.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority. Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee,” the cruise line announced.

So far, the suspension is in effect until March 22, the cruise line said. Plans beyond that date will be announced as decisions are made.

“We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly,” the statement said.

The U.S. State Department has maintained a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Haiti since July 27, 2023, due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure. “Kidnapping is widespread and victims regularly include U.S. citizens,” the alert states.

The situation took a turn for the worse in early March as gangs attacked government buildings and the National Penitentiary, releasing an estimated 4,000 inmates. This week, Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation.

Labadee is an enclosed resort, built on a peninsula accessible only to Royal Caribbean guests and employees, that the cruise line has leased since the 1980s. The 260-acre property is located about 130 miles north of Port-au-Prince, where most of the violence is taking place. Travel by car from the capital to the resort takes six to eight hours.

The resort features a roller coaster, fishing and jet-ski areas, cabanas and beach access. Private security protects cruise ship customers when Royal Caribbean’s ships stop there.

Itineraries of six ships that sail from Florida ports will be affected by the suspension, which is scheduled to last through March 22.

How dining works on cruise ships in 2024.

Embarking on a cruise is about much more than the destinations you’ll visit. Among the many onboard attractions, dining is a major part of any cruise vacation.

If you’ve never cruised, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’ll be forced to dress in formal wear and eat with strangers day after day. In fact, such an insistence on formal wear and shared tables is one of the biggest misconceptions about cruising in the modern day.

Modern cruise ships are floating vacation resorts, with multiple dining options to enjoy. Formal dinners do still exist, but so do poolside burgers, lavish salad bars, and midnight room service.

From the elegance of main dining rooms to the convenience of room service, here's a closer look at five main dining concepts you'll encounter on most cruise ships.

1. Main Dining Rooms

The heart of the culinary experience on most cruises remains the main dining room. These elegantly designed spaces focus on traditional dinner service, but are often open for breakfast and lunch too. Aside from the main theater or performance space, the main dining rooms will likely be the biggest single spaces on the ship.

Although main dining menus vary wildly across lines, there typically will be a selection of dishes for between three and five courses.

On many lines, the menu changes daily, with an ‘always available’ section of popular dishes remaining in place for the duration of the cruise. If you're not hungry, remember that you're not required to order something for every course.

Traditionally, guests are given a fixed table and time for dinner, usually one of two sittings. Subject to availability, these can be changed by speaking with the host early in the cruise. This fixed option remains popular with traditional cruisers, as it allows guests to build a rapport with their servers and make new friends.

Large dining rooms remain a stunning feature on modern cruise ships from Royal Caribbean.

Some people dislike the fixed time concept, but there is no requirement to attend the main dining room every night, or even at all. All but the smallest cruise ships offer alternate dining options.

In recent years, cruise lines have begun to introduce more flexibility into the main dining room. Norwegian Cruise Line is well-known for its freestyle approach to dining, where guests come to the main dining room whenever they are ready to eat.

The downsides of anytime dining are the occasional need to wait, and the fact you’ll get different serving staff each night.

This more flexible approach that has proved so popular that many competing lines have introduced it or a hybrid approach. For example, British line P&O Cruises now offers the option of a fixed table for the duration of the cruise or an anytime option.

The shift to anytime dining is not the only trend seen in main dining rooms. In recent years, the majority of cruise lines have significantly relaxed dress codes.

Although sportswear and shorts may still be frowned upon during evenings, a ‘smart casual’ approach is perfectly acceptable on most lines. Even designated formal nights are, in most cases, less strict than in previous years.

2. Buffet Restaurants

For a more laid-back and versatile dining option, buffet restaurants on cruise ships offer a range of choices to suit everyone's taste.

Buffet restaurants on a cruise ship offer a wide variety of food options throughout the day.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, these restaurants provide a casual atmosphere where guests can help themselves to a wide range of dishes, from international cuisines to comfort foods.

Many buffet restaurants open for afternoon tea (or simply remain open for a longer lunch) and a late night snack bar ideal for those who’ve spent the day enjoying the sunshine and the bars.

The buffet is ideal for families and those looking for a quick and convenient meal without the formality of the main dining room. Usually, the buffet will be popular on formal night among those guests choosing not to dress up.

3. Alternative Casual Dining

Recognizing the desire for variety, most cruise ships offer alternative casual dining options, often situated poolside for easy access and quick service. These venues often operate on a 'grab and go' basis and are included in the cruise fare.

Casual venues can range from grill stations serving up burgers and hot dogs to pizzerias and sandwich bars, offering a relaxed dining experience without the need to get changed. This option is perfect for those looking to grab a bite in between activities or seeking a lighter lunch or casual meal under the sun.

On larger ships, some alternative approaches to casual dining are appearing. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Prima class of ships has introduced a food hall concept with ordering via table-based tablets.

On some lines, specialty cafes and coffee shops offer pastries and cakes, but these often come at an extra charge.

4. Specialty Restaurants

For those looking to elevate their dining experience, specialty restaurants on cruise ships offer cuisine-specific menus with a focus on fine dining. These restaurants often require an additional charge, either a flat fee or à la carte pricing, and provide an intimate setting with enhanced service and premium menu options.

Offering everything from steakhouses and Italian trattorias to sushi bars and French bistros, specialty restaurants provide a culinary exploration and an intimate alternative to the larger dining venues, at an additional cost.

Some of the world’s biggest cruise ships can contain multiple specialty restaurants. For example, MSC World Europa features 13 dining venues, of which six carry an additional charge.

5. Room Service

The convenience of room service allows guests to enjoy meals in the privacy of their cabin at any time of the day or night. While the menu is more limited compared to other dining options, room service is perfect for those who prefer a quiet meal alone or with their travel companions.

Whether room service is free depends on the line, with some lines offering just free delivery at breakfast. Late night deliveries often incur a charge.

Dealing With Dietary Restrictions

Cruise lines are increasingly accommodating guests with dietary restrictions, offering a range of options for those with specific dietary needs.

Whether you're vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have food allergies, the dining venues on board can cater to your requirements. Many modern cruise ships' buffet restaurants now feature detailed allergen labels.

Even so, it’s best to inform the cruise line of any dietary restrictions in advance of your sailing. Most ships have dedicated staff and unadvertised options to ensure that every guest can enjoy their dining experience without compromise.

Jail Cells? Morgues? Your Cruise Ship Has Some Surprises for You.

Here are five unexpected features on ships, some of which you hopefully won’t discover on your own.

A close-up photograph of three decks of a cruise ship's cabins, each of which has a balcony with a half wall of blue glass and two chairs.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

Cruise ships have hidden features that many passengers, particularly first-timers, don’t know about. Some ships are as big as small cities, and while it’s relatively easy to familiarize yourself with a seemingly endless number of amenities — water parks, tattoo parlors, multiple restaurants — there is also an entire ecosystem, often below passenger decks, that is shrouded in mystery.

Here are five things that cruisers may not know about cruise ships:

There’s a morgue …

Cruise ships carry millions of passengers each year, and it is not uncommon for deaths to occur on board. Most vessels are required to have a morgue and additional body bags in the event of an emergency.

The morgue, usually a small stainless steel refrigerated room on the ship’s lowest deck, accommodates between two to 10 bodies, depending on the size of the vessel. When a passenger or crew member dies, officials on the ship will notify the authorities on shore and a medical team will assess the body and move it to the morgue, where it is kept until arrangements are made for repatriation. In most cases, the body will be removed at the next port of call, but sometimes will remain on board until the end of the voyage.

…and a jail

There are no police officers on cruise ships, but most vessels have small jails known as the brig, and unruly passengers could find themselves locked up if the ship’s security team determines that they have violated the cruise line’s code of conduct.

The brig, usually a bare-bones room with a bed and bathroom facilities, does not have iron bars like a traditional jail cell. It is used to detain guests who commit serious crimes like assault or possession of illegal substances. Drunk and disorderly passengers may be put under “cabin arrest,” meaning they cannot leave their cabin without a security escort.

Depending on the circumstances, most passengers put in the brig will stay there until they can be handed over to law enforcement officials.

Many ships don’t have a Deck 13

Many cruise ships do not have a Deck 13 because of the widespread superstition in Western culture that the number is unlucky. Ships with a Deck 13 typically use it for public areas, not cabins.

Some ships, like Royal Caribbean’s Quantum class vessels, have a Deck 13 because the vessels are used mainly for the company’s market in Asia, where the number is not considered unlucky. MSC ships also have a Deck 13, but not a Deck 17, because the cruise line’s founder is Italian and 17 is considered unlucky in Italy.

Cruise lines entertain other superstitions, like appointing godmothers to bless new vessels and ensure the safety of passengers and crew. They also hold naming ceremonies in which a bottle of champagne is smashed against the hull of a new ship for good luck. If the bottle fails to break, the vessel will, according to superstition, have bad luck. These days, cruise lines use mechanical devices to ensure that does not happen.

Hidden pools and facilities for the crew

There are typically more than 1,000 crew members on board large cruise ships, and while they spend most of their time serving passengers, there are several areas on the lower decks designated for them to unwind.

The facilities vary from ship to ship, but there are usually small pools in the ship’s bow exclusively for crew members, as well as restaurants, bars and recreational areas like game rooms and gyms. The designated bar, a central social hub for employees after they have finished their shifts, often hosts live music and events in the evening.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, has an entire “neighborhood” dedicated to its 2,300 crew members, with a clubhouse that has massage chairs and virtual balconies — large screens that show real-time views from outside — as well as a restaurant with portholes looking out to the ocean.

Most ships host A.A. meetings

With all-inclusive beverage packages and countless bars, cruise ships can be a tough environment for guests in recovery. Many cruise lines offer daily Alcoholics Anonymous meetings that are usually scheduled as “Friends of Bill W.,” a reference to William Wilson, who co-founded the A.A. program in 1935.

The meetings are usually held in a quiet place like the library, where guests can feel comfortable and maintain their anonymity. They are also open to other support group members, like Women for Sobriety and Narcotics Anonymous.
