a guide to jungle safaris in Africa

Jungle safaris offer the optimal safari experience for those who enjoy getting up close and personal with nature – experiencing both flora and fauna first-hand. There’s always the hope of something of interest lurking on the other side of tall grass or hanging in the branches above.

And African jungles, in particular, are world-renowned for their primates, offering the opportunity to see all sorts of African monkeys , and perhaps more excitingly chimpanzee and gorilla trekking experiences .

What exactly is a jungle?

Nearly everyone has an idea about how they’d define the biome, and most of them probably do have some correct information.

The best way to think of a jungle would be a densely forested area with tangled vegetation and underbrush in a tropical climate. Jungles are very similar to rainforests, but are drier than their relatives and don’t have as much skyscraping vegetation.

They are areas completely unhampered by humans and thus provide one of the most exhilarating opportunities to see jungle animals in their natural habitat. Read more about jungles .

Where are Africa’s jungles?

As you might imagine, jungle safaris can take you into the heart of some of Africa’s most exotic locales. The majority of Africa’s jungles are focused close to the center of the continent, between the Sahara and Kalahari deserts, but pockets of jungle can also be found in Uganda and Tanzania in East Africa.

As with most wildlife, jungle animals are dependent on nourishment from water to live. Because of the difficulty of spotting wildlife in dense jungles, the majority of jungle safaris focus on wildlife spotting from or around water sources. This usually means spending time close to one Africa’s rivers or the surroundings of one of the many great lakes dotting the Rift Valley which form part of the borders between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. The one significant exception here is when taking a jungle safari to enjoy an ape trekking experience where venturing deep into the jungle – and even up mountains or volcanos – is required.

Here’s our pick of the top national parks to experience a true jungle safari:

Parc National Des Volcans is a dense, wet jungle on the upper reaches of towering volcanos. Made famous by Dianne Fossey and her life’s work on the resident gorilla families.

Nyungwe National Park Dense, mountainous virgin forests with waterfalls, chimpanzees, and a host of smaller monkeys. There’s also a snazzy new jungle canopy walkway which gives a whole new take on the jungle safari.

Murchison Falls National Park has the Murchison Falls and Nile river running through thick forest and savanna with wildlife viewing not limited to the big five. A classic jungle safari whether you’re in a jeep or trekking.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park  Steep mountain rain forest with wide altitude span offering the ultimate jungle safari with the chance of coming face to face with a gorilla.

Kibale Forest National Park  is made up of lush tropical rain forest in an area of outstanding natural beauty and habituated chimpanzee families to enliven your jungle safari trek.

What to see on a jungle safari

There are all manner of jungle-dwelling animals in Africa – from the bongo to the African forest elephant. But probably the most alluring aspect of a jungle safari is the presence of our primate relatives. Monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees can all be seen in jungle environments in Uganda , Tanzania , Rwanda , and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Gorilla trekking on a jungle safari

Jungle safaris

Spot mountain gorillas on your jungle safari

There’s no creature on the face of the earth that has piqued more human interest than our evolutionary ancestors, the gorilla. Gorilla trekking is the best opportunity to observe the majesty of our primate relatives up close and personal, and in their natural habitat.

With dwindling numbers and habitat, gorilla safaris where you’re virtually guaranteed a sighting of a habituated gorilla are limited to just three national parks in Uganda and Rwanda. Gorilla trekking in the Democratic Republic of Congo is possible, but an on/off affair, and not advised at this time due to security conditions in the country.

Tips for gorilla trekking

  • A jungle environment tends to bring out even more bugs and flying insects than  other types of safari , so be sure to have enough insect repellent.
  • The trek to find gorillas can be a long and tiring one through dense rain forest, so ensure you’re well prepared – strong waterproof footwear and long sleeves and trousers are recommended to avoid scratches from plant life and the ever-present jungle ants.
  • Garden gloves may sound silly but will prove useful when trekking through overgrown brambles and thorns.
  • The hour that you get to spend with a gorilla family when you finally encounter them goes incredibly fast. Make sure you take time out of photographing them to simply watch and admire them.
  • If you’re ill you won’t be allowed to trek to the gorillas, as illnesses can be shared. You’ll need to arrange a doctor’s note for a full permit refund in Uganda or a 50% permit refund in Rwanda.
  • In order not to be viewed as a potential threat you should speak only very quietly when in the presence of a gorilla and don’t make any sudden movements.
  • If a gorilla charges at you the advice is to crouch down in a submissive position until they calm down – never turn your back and run!

Best time to enjoy a jungle safari

If you’re heading to central Africa for a safari you should do so between December and March, during the dry season. The rainy season from May to September makes travel extremely difficult, with most dirt roads closed due to rain and mud. Flooding is common in the rainy season (particularly around rivers), and the risk of getting malaria is increased.

Jungle safari tips

Bloodborne illnesses are extremely common from mosquitos, flies, wasps, spiders, and other jungle insects. Companies that offer jungle safaris may request specific immunizations before your safari. Either way, you should seek professional medical advice and take proper medical precautions before you travel to Africa.

A jungle environment tends to bring out even more bugs and flying insects than other types of safari , so be sure to be well-stocked with insect repellent.

If you’re planning to do any walking in the jungle, long sleeves and trousers are recommended to avoid scratches from plant life. Read more on what to wear on safari .

Never travel alone in the jungle – always travel in groups and hire a guide.

Avoid using a flash on your camera if taking photos as it can ward off the wildlife. Want to know how to take the perfect wildlife photo ?

Its overall rating of 4.87 out of 5 put this world-renowned wildlife park out in front of 199 other parks and reserves across East and southern Africa, as well as Ethiopia and Madagascar. Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve in South Africa continued its rise through the rankings this year, reaching second place, with Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park coming in third.

  • We analyzed 2,494 park reviews on the SafariBookings.com website, which included 1,380 contributions by safari tourists from 107 countries, as well as 1,114 reviews written by our international team of safari experts.
  • In total 200 parks from 15 countries, consisting of Botswana, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, were included in the study.
  • Only parks recognized for classic wildlife-viewing safaris were considered. Parks mostly known for scenery or gorilla/chimp tracking (and not other wildlife) were not included.
  • Parks with less than 10 reviews were excluded from the Top 50.
  • Serengeti National Park in Tanzania was the clear winner with a 4.87 overall rating. This was the fourth time running that the Serengeti has come out on top, after placing first in 2015, 2018 and 2019. Driving the Serengeti’s popularity is the park’s spectacular wildlife (including the abundance of predators and the wildebeest migration), for which it was ranked highly by travelers and experts alike.
  • South Africa’s Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve came in second with an overall rating of 4.71 out of 5. Ranked ninth in 2019, it jumped all the way to second place this year, roaring into the top three. Confirmation that Sabi Sands belongs in such elite company comes from the fact that both travelers and experts gave it 5 out of 5 for wildlife, and a higher overall ranking than they did in the previous survey.
  • Coming in third was South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, rising from a respectable seventh last time around. It may receive fewer visitors than other, better-known parks, but it gets top marks from both travelers and safari experts.
  • Tanzania had the highest number of entries in the Top 10, with three parks: Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Ruaha National Park. Botswana was close behind with two and a half parks: Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (which Botswana shares with South Africa).
  • Kenya may have only one entry, Masai Mara National Reserve, in the Top 10, but it had more parks and reserves in the Top 50 (12) than any other country. South Africa had the second most entries with 11, down from 14 in the last survey. Tanzania (eight), Botswana (six) and Uganda (four) were next. For the first time in 2024, Malawi had an entry in the Top 50 with Liwonde National Park at number 20.
  • Birders have clearly taken a liking to Kenya’s Kakamega Forest National Reserve: both safari travelers and experts ranked Kakamega in first place for bird watching.
  • One of the biggest surprises was Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. Ranked second in 2019, it fell dramatically to 27th. But safari travelers have remained loyal to the park, giving it the maximum score of 5 out of 5 in the categories of wildlife, bush vibe and birding.
  • Travelers aged between 20 and 35 decided that their favorite park was Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, followed closely by Tanzania’s Serengeti. For more mature age groups, the top ranking went to Namibia’s Etosha National Park (ages 35 to 50) and South Africa’s Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve (ages 50 to 65).
  • Botswana’s Chobe National Park and Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park ranked highly for safari travelers who have been on more than one safari. And when it comes to wilderness, Botswana’s Okavango Delta deservedly came out on top in the bush vibe category for those who have been on five or more safaris.

Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Jungle and Rainforest Safaris

The planet’s most spectacularly fecund greenbelt jungles, are home to an extraordinary wealth of flora that supports some of the most eye-popping fauna of every shape, shade and size imaginable. Take your pick of a variety of jungle holidays, from driving through the undulating wilds of India in search of tigers and sloth bears; taking to the great snaking rivers of Borneo to spy orangutans, proboscis monkeys and crocodiles; heading into the jungles of the Amazon on the lookout for jaguars, macaws, monkeys and river dolphins; to saddling up to ride on horseback through the volcanic landscape of Costa Rica; picking your way through the orchid-dotted jungles of Madagascar whilst keeping your eyes peeled for lemurs; and trekking into the mountains of Africa on the trail of gorillas.

After the heart-pounding sensation of being in close proximity to spectacular wildlife, what better way to relax and reflect on your latest encounters than at a polished-to-perfection lodge. Stay deep within the jungle in an eco-lodge perched over the river’s edge, or perhaps wrapped in the white-washed elegance of an imperial hotel. As an exquisite meal settles into your stomach and you gaze at the setting sun, be sure to sip a cocktail on the veranda to put the seal on another unforgettable day in the jungle.

Who wants to go to the jungle for a holiday? These days, the jungles and rainforests of the globe offer some of the best wildlife and natural world experiences on the planet. Throughout the text below, we bring you some of our favourites, from staying overnight in a Survival Camp with your family in the forests of Borneo, to tracking the endangered mountain gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda.

Unfortunately, with so many threats to Borneo’s rainforests in this day and age, the vast forests of this tropical island are rapidly diminishing. There are, however, still some great places to visit to see some of the worlds most endangered wildlife on this beautiful tropical island.

Danum Valley - Probably one of the most sought after locations in Borneo being part of the Danum Valley Conservation Area With canopy walkways, forest tracks, running rivers and the beautiful comfort of Borneo Rainforest Lodge , this is one not to be missed (but book early as it is in high demand!). Danum offers a variety of resident wildlife including the ever elusive Asian elephants (often seen on night drives), a healthy population of wild orangutans, howling gibbons through the morning forest mists and a fair few leeches to!

Tabin Wildlife Reserve - Often overlooked for its more popular cousin Danum, Tabin is still a great jungle destination. A popular home for elephants as well as orangutans (not such high densities as Danum), Tabin offers more of a wilderness experience with a variety of nature trails that get you off the beaten track. Tabin Wildlife Resort is the best place to stay with forest bungalows overlooking the river below.

Kinabatangan River - One of the best places in Borneo to see orangutans in the wild Whilst this is not a traditional rainforest as such (due to huge logging having taken place), most of your safaris take place in boats along the river. Along the way, you can hope to see macaques, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, elephants, crocodiles and a variety of tropical birdlife. At Natural World Safaris we always endeavour to put you in the right place at the right time in order to maximise your wildlife experience; to this extent we recommend the picturesque Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge , which offers not high-end luxury but charm, sustainability and full immersion in the glorious natural surroundings.

Often referred to as “The Red Island” due to the deforestation that has taken place over the years and the red laterite soils being washed out into the surroundings oceans, Madagascar is still fortunate enough to have some pristine tracts of rainforest left intact.

Andasibe Reserve - If you want to see the largest living lemurs left in the wild, then this is the place to come. Expect to put the effort in in Madagascar, as all of the exploration is done on foot as opposed to by 4x4 as you would expect in traditional African safari destinations. Andasibe is home to the teddy bear like indris who will wake you in the morning with their early calls drifting through the mist shrouded rainforest. With a few choices on the accommodation front, Vakona Lodge is probably the best (with its own lemur island – prepare to be jumped upon!) closely followed by Andasibe Hotel.

Ranomafana National Park - Home to the cyanide eating bamboo lemur, this is a rainforest hotspot for Madagascar. Setam Lodge is the best option in Ranomafana closely followed by Centrest; neither are of a 5 star status however they provide great access to the park and all it has to offer. We also offer an exclusive visit from Ranomafana to visit the Kianjavato Lemur Project (no other operators have access to this project), where you can expect to visit the tree planting project, the local school and also one of the most elusive creatures in Madagascar, the bizarre looking aye-aye.

Forming part of the Congo Basin, both Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Bwindi Forest of Uganda, are home to some of the last remaining mountain gorillas of the world inhabiting dense tropical rainforest. The Congo basin itself conjures up images of vast dense jungle, wild rivers and undiscovered tribes and to an extent this still remains true today.

Bwindi Forest - The last stronghold of the mountain gorillas of Uganda, Bwindi also offers stunning nature walks, visits with pygmy tribes and hidden waterfalls. If you want jungle canopy views and the space to wander under your own steam then Bwindi Lodge is the one for you.

A highlight of any stay includes tracking the breath-taking mountain gorillas , however also spare some time to take in the other attractions including tracking the golden monkeys, a visit to the grave of Dian Fossey and the gorillas with which she worked, the local cultural village and for a small conservation fee, even a visit with the Gorilla Doctors who work with the gorillas on a daily basis. Volcanoes National Park - The section of the park that falls on the Rwandan side of the border (rather than the side of the Democratic Republic of Congo) is also home to one of the largest remaining populations of endangered mountain gorillas. With five volcanic peaks stretching off into the distance, volcanic lakes, and thick jungle, this is the heart of Africa. The park itself (on the Congolese) side forms the oldest National Park in Africa (Albert National Park), having been established in 1925 and then later being extended to encompass the Rwandan side and the Belgian Congo.

Not only is the wildlife incredible here, there are also loads of wonderfully exciting activities that will help you explore the best bits of this fascinating country, from canopy walkways and jungle trekking to white-water rafting and zip-lining.

Manuel Antonio National Park - In the 'Green Zone' of this coastal national park , you could come face to face with endangered squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, howler monkeys and the white-faced monkey, as well as sloths, iguanas and more. Called the green zone for a reason, this vibrant area provides you with typical jungle vistas, untouched beaches and chattering wildlife. A little further south, a stretch of wild beach leads onto Ballena Marine National Park, excellent for sightings of whales, dolphins and turtles.

Monteverde Cloud Forest and Santa Elena Cloud Forest - Often characterised by the veil of clouds lingering in the treetops, these cloud forests provide a unique jungle experience. Home to over 100 mammal species, 400 bird species and 1,200 reptile and amphibian species, these two forests play home to similar wildlife species, including Latin America's most famous cats: jaguars, ocelots, pumas, oncillas, jaguarundis and margays. You will also find the resplendent quetzal, the symbol of Costa Rica Unlike Monteverde, in Santa Elena you might even come across the spider monkey. Activities include aerial trams, hanging bridges, butterfly farms and birdwatching expeditions, as well as zip-line tours and insect museums.

One of the flagship endangered species of global wildlife, the Royal Bengal tiger still patrols the forests of the Indian subcontinent. With its habitat quickly disappearing, it is more essential than ever to visit the terrain of the tigers in show of support of their never-ending battle.

Kanha, Ranthambhore and Bandhavgarh National Parks - All home to the tiger, these jungle parks are now tracts of what were once vast expanses of forests. Efforts are continually made to regain the corridors of land that join these individual strongholds, however none have yet been entirely successful. Kanha is probably our favourite national park covering a much wider area and therefore offering a much more wilderness feel. Ranthambore and Bandhavgarh, whilst smaller parks, do also offer quality tiger viewing and are essential in the continuing effort to conserve wild tiger populations. These three national parks form the best places to see tigers in the wild

The Best Jungle Lodges in the World

Who wants to go to the jungle for a holiday? No longer are you in for a sweaty, mosquito ridden experience with basic lodging; these days the jungles and rainforests of the globe offer some of the best wildlife and natural world experiences left on the planet. Throughout the text below, we bring you some of our favourites, from staying overnight in a Survival Camp with your family in the forests of Borneo, to tracking the endangered mountain gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda.

INDIA: Treehouse Hideaway

A funky design and something completely unique when it comes to tracking tigers in India! The Treehouse Hideaway main camp is designed round a big old tree which is home to both the dining area and also the bar which affords a great view into the forest. Individual rooms are housed in their own tree with a variety of trunks and branches affording you the ultimate wilderness experience! Treehouse Hideaway is the smaller, unique sister of Kings Lodge and provides access to the lovely Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

BRAZIL: Cristalino Lodge

Built in perfect harmony with it's surroundings, Cristalino was named one of the world's best eco-lodges by National Geographic Traveller, and with its emphasis on sustainable practices and idyllic location on the Cristalino River, it's not hard to see why. Set in a 30,000-acre private reserve, there are sumptuous facilities on offer here as well as plenty of Amazonian activities, from rainforest walks and specialist butterfly tours to canoe trips and canopy viewing from the two observation towers.

COSTA RICA: Pacuare Lodge

In the midst of the tropical Caribbean jungle, home to singing birds and colourful wildlife, Pacuare Lodge has to be a firm favourite. Bungalows are luxurious and private, ranging in size and shape to suit any discerning traveller, some even have a private pool, and the cuisine is second to none. When it comes to activities you can be as wild as you like, with everything from candlelit romantic dinners and hiking, to horseback riding, canyoning and rafting.

BORNEO: Borneo Rainforest Lodge

In high demand, Borneo Rainforest Lodge is one of the most comfortable properties for jungle based activities in Borneo. With board walk rooms running alongside the river and views into the surrounding jungle, Borneo Rainforest Lodge offers the perfect location for wildlife viewing. With one of the highest populations of wild orangutans, pygmy elephants, gibbons and more, Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a highlight of any Borneo wildlife safari and combines perfectly with the other wildlife rich regions of the Kinabatangan River and Myne.

TANZANIA: Greystoke Camp

A truly remote jungle lodge located in the foothills of the Mahale Mountains and on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Greystoke Camp offers complete niche luxury with tented rooms overlooking the private beach and access into the immediate forest behind. Greystoke Camp is also the best lodging available if tracking the cheeky chimpanzees of Mahale National Park. Mahale affords some of the best chimpanzee tracking in the world with habituated groups making for ideal photographic opportunities. Whilst the chimpanzee tracking can be strenuous, afternoons are more relaxed with beach walks, dhow cruising, fishing…and of course the unmissable sundowner.

UGANDA: Bwindi Lodge

Located in Bwindi Forest in Uganda, the principal advantage Bwindi Lodge has over its competitors is its location. The majority of land surrounding the property has been purchased in order that the lodge itself blends into the natural environment. With direct views into the jungle canopy, you get a true sense for the dense African jungle and if you are lucky you even on occasions get the gorillas visiting you within the grounds! Tropical jungle lodging with one of the best wildlife experiences possible…pretty unbeatable.

MADAGASCAR: Masoala Forest Lodge

Little known, Masoala Forest Lodge is set on the remote Masoala Peninsular in the north east of Madagascar. A tented camp with a fairly basic structure, Masoala Forest Lodge affords clients that truly unique wilderness experience away from the madding crowds and typical tourist traps (not that there are many of these in Madagascar!). Aside from laying back in your hammock, Masoala offers you unique jungle walks, lemur spotting, coastal kayaking and even at the right time of the year, whale watching!

RWANDA: Virunga Lodge

Not really a jungle lodge as such, but offering access to some of the best jungle wildlife viewing in the world, that of the gorillas and the Volcanoes National Park. Virunga Lodge is located at 2,300m with 360 degree views of Lakes Ruhondo and Bulera and the chain of the dramatic Virunga Volcanic peaks disappearing off into the distance. Whilst not brass taps and butler service, the eco-principles of Virunga Lodge are a highlight and it is almost impossible not to be amazed at the stunning surroundings. The only down side is that it is a longer drive to the park headquarters than other properties, however, we personally like this as you get to soak up some of the everyday life of Rwanda as you make your way through the local villages to the park.

Amazing places to see the Big 5 on safari

author_avatar

Recently updated on August 14th, 2023 at 05:01 pm

The Big 5 are the superstars of Africa and spotting them in the best safari destinations in the world is is one of life’s biggest thrills. But what is the Big 5 exactly? The term was coined in the 19th century by big game hunters who listed the African elephant, African lion, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros as the most dangerous creatures to hunt on foot in Africa. Fortunately, these incredible animals are now largely protected in national parks and game reserves.

While there are no guarantees of spotting wildlife on safari (especially the notoriously elusive leopard and critically endangered rhino), there are some destinations in Africa that are renowned for their Big 5 populations. If you’re ready to tick an African safari off your bucket list, look no further than these top safari destinations for spotting the Big 5.

1. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Serengeti National Park (@serengeti_national_park) on Jun 26, 2020 at 10:09am PDT

Serengeti National Park is an icon of Africa and one of the best safari destinations in the world for spotting the Big 5 and so much more. Located in northern Tanzania, this UNESCO-listed national park is one of the oldest ecosystems on earth. It’s filled with plants and animals that have barely changed over the past million years.

The park is an epic expanse of plains and grassland, dotted with all of the Big 5 and other safari favourites like giraffes, zebra, hyenas, cheetah and the rare African wild dog.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Serengeti National Park (@serengeti_national_park) on Jun 28, 2020 at 10:10am PDT

The Serengeti is also famed as the home of ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ – the Great Migration. Over two million wildebeest, zebra, impala and gazelle cross the Mara River in a thundering mass each year in search of greener pastures. The migration sets off annually around July towards the Masai Mara in Kenya. The herd then makes the 1,000km journey back to Tanzania around October or November when the rains set in.

The wildebeest must dodge stalking predators like lions and leopards on their journey, while huge clouds of migrating birds fly overhead. As the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, it’s an astonishing sight to behold.

Kruger National Park is the oldest and most iconic national park in South Africa. It’s also one of the top bucket list experiences on the whole continent. Covering a staggering two million hectares (the size of Israel or Slovenia), you’ll have a good chance of spotting the famous Big 5, the unique Little 5 , and everything in between.

There’s also reliable sightings and a high density of animals in the private reserves around the Kruger National Park. One of our favourite areas is the Karongwe Private Game Reserve. Here you can spot all the Big 5 and learn about the traditions and local deliacies of the Shangaan people at a local village.

As one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the continent’s best safari hotspots. Located in the Crater Highlands of northern Tanzania, Ngorongoro is an ancient volcanic crater spanning 260 square kilometres. The crater is surrounded by a 600-metre high wall, and it’s the largest intact and unfilled caldera in the world.

It’s home to over 25,000 large game animals, including all the Big 5. The conservation area protects Tanzania’s last remaining population of the endangered black rhino. You can also spot cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, spotted hyenas and the critically endangered African wild dog. The crater is also dotted with sparkling soda lakes where you can see hippos and massive pink flocks of flamingo.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ngorongoro Crater (@ngorongoro_crater) on Jul 17, 2019 at 4:10am PDT

Ngorongoro has also been home to humans for around three million years and occupied by pastoralist tribes, like the Maasai, for the past 2,000 years. You can visit a Maasai village and even see casts of the fossilised footprints found at Olduvai Gorge. These famous footprints prove humans were walking on two legs at least 3.7 million years ago.

5. Etosha National Park, Namibia

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Etosha National Park ORG (@etoshanationalpark) on Jan 31, 2019 at 6:40am PST

Etosha is the greatest national park in Namibia, famed for its striking desert landscapes and abundant wildlife. You’ll have the chance to spot four of the Big 5 as there are no buffalo in Etosha, however you can spot them in the nearby Waterberg Plateau and Caprivi Strip. Meanwhile, the huge populations of lions and elephants make up for it.

Etosha is also one of the best places in Africa to see the white rhino and critically endangered black rhino. These precious creatures have been poached to near extinction on the continent, but you can still find them around the waterholes of Etosha.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Etosha National Park ORG (@etoshanationalpark) on Jul 19, 2018 at 6:16am PDT

The waterholes are also a great place to spot lurking lions, leopards, cheetah and hyena. You can also spot herds of elephants coming to get a drink and bathe in the water. With its unique desert-adapted animals, Etosha is undoubtedly one of the best safari destinations in the world.

It’s all about elephants in Chobe, and this national park is one of the best safari destinations in the world to see these majestic creatures. There are around 120,000 elephants in the park and we love spotting them on a Chobe River cruise.

You’ll have the chance to see elephants, buffalo, lions and leopards come to the river bank to drink, while birds like the kingfisher hover over the water. The best time to spot the huge elephant herds is the dry season from May to October. Wildlife viewing is at its absolute best from August to October.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chobe National Park (@chobe_national_park) on Feb 3, 2016 at 5:12am PST

Unfortunately, rhinos are extremely rare to spot in Chobe after having their population decimated over the years. The good news is they are slowly being reintroduced to private areas of the park.

These five rare animals can only be found in the Samburu ecosystem and include the Reticulated giraffe, the Grevy’s Zebra, the Beisa oryx, the Somali ostrich and the gerenuk.

You might even get to spot some of these animals on a special guided nature walk. You’ll be accompanied by an expert naturalist, who will share their wealth of wisdom on the plants and animals found in the area.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kenya Tourism Board (@magicalkenya) on Jul 24, 2020 at 4:33am PDT

Along with the Samburu Special 5, you’ll also have the chance to see more famous animals including elephants and lions just like Elsa, the lion cub made famous in the award-winning book and movie ‘Born Free’. Samburu National Reserve was one of two areas where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised the lion cub.

You can get to know more about the region’s conservation and anti-poaching efforts in the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa.

The 10 Best Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

best jungle safaris

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

6. Eravikulam National Park Safari – to see the Nilgiri Tahr

eravikulum national park - Munnar

Nestled in the hills of Munnar, Eravikulam National Park has a mystic charm that will bewitch you all. Anamudi, the highest peak in South India is located right inside the park.

The park’s mesmerizing beauty is because of the mountains, the waterfalls and the pristine natural ecosystem. An ecosystem which was unfortunately disturbed and replaced with the aggressive commercialization and tea plantations by the British.

The ticket counter is bustling with people all the time as it is one of the biggest attractions in the Idukki region. The safari bus simply takes you to the hilly forests and leaves you there to explore the park by yourself.

Vehicles are not allowed to enter beyond a point to maintain the sensitive biosphere.

So here you have the walking jungle safari. The 97 sq km park has three parts – the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. Visitors are allowed to stroll only in the tourist area. Trek in the Kurinji trails covered with blossoms to spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and be awed at the sight of the majestic Lakkom Falls.

Don’t miss the Eraviulam National Park in your Munnar itinerary .

7. BR Hills

Biligiriranga Hills, popularly known as BR Hills is an elusive and enchanting forest in Karnataka. Located between Bangalore and Mysore , this could be one of the most visited jungles in India, but it is actually quite the opposite. Because tourism in the area is not as well-developed, footfall is less, and the jungle-feel is quite authentic.

Welcoming Ellis Veen from Backpack Adventures to share her experience at BR Hills

best jungle safaris

It was a rainy morning in BR hills . The wildlife sanctuary was lush and green and teeming with life. Our jeep was going slow on the muddy dirt roads through the dense forest. One time we even had to get out to remove fallen branches from the narrow jeep track.

The rainy season is maybe not the best time to go on a safari in India, but it is when the jungle of BR Hills truly comes alive. The constant drizzle did not take away the natural beauty of the monsoon greenery and the joy of spotting wildlife.

I was lucky to see wild boars, barking deer and chital deer and just as I was leaving BR Hills there was a group of elephants by the side of the road.

BR Hills is one of the lesser-known wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka. Although less popular than nearby Bandipur or Kabini, it is equally beautiful and with the same chances of spotting the elusive tiger or the Asian elephant that roams the forests. Being a bridge between the Eastern ghats and the Western ghats it is a biodiverse area of rich flora and fauna.

BR Hills has culture and history too. The local Biligiri Ranganathaswamy temple is an important place of worship for the local Soliga people and a pilgrimage site for Hindus.

With its scenic location on top of a hill it offers sweeping views over the BR Hills Wildlife sanctuary. Safari s are organized by the K.Gudi wilderness camp where you can sleep as well.

8. Dandeli Jungle Safari

Dandeli, located in the northern region of Karnataka is a great place for adventurists and nature-lovers. It is also very close to Goa and can be clubbed as at extension to your Goa itinerary.

Raksha shares her tips for Dandeli Jungle Safari

best jungle safaris

Designated as a tiger reserve, the town of Dandeli is a natural habitat for wildlife and is the second largest sanctuary in Karnataka state of India. Now called the Kali Tiger Reserve, the forest has abundant wild animals, reptiles, and birds.

Forests of Dandeli are made up of moist deciduous and semi-evergreen trees. The sanctuary is located on the banks of River Kali and is said to have about 13 to 14 tigers in the wild. It is also home for the rare black panthers.

The best time to visit Dandeli is between the months of October and May. Jungle safaris are operated twice during the day by the forest department.

The visitors can also take a coracle ride on the river to see freshwater crocodiles. And for adventure seekers, there is white water river rafting available with rapids of 3+ grades.

Dandeli has many accommodations catering for all kinds of travelers. There are home stays that provide amazing options for budget travelers and then there are resorts for luxury travelers.

Kali Wilderness Camp operated by Jungle Lodges is an excellent place to stay. As it is part of the government, preference for jungle safari rides is given to the guests of the camp.

Jungle Safari in India – Rest of India

I have only been to jungle safaris in the south. So, for the rest of India I reached out to the blogging community for their suggestions. North India has a diverse landscape with deserts, Himalayan forests, mangroves and more. The enriching experiences of these bloggers gave me new travel goals.

1. Jaldapara Jungle Safari

Welcome Soumya from Nature Diary to share his experiences:

best jungle safaris

The list of best  jungle   safari  in India is incomplete without mentioning Jaldapara National Park in the northern part of West Bengal . After Kaziranga National Park in Assam, Jaldapara is the second-largest home for critically endangered one-horned rhinos in India.

At present, the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Limited ( WBFDCA ) arranges jeep  safaris  on five routes and elephant  safaris  on two routes across the national park.

If you love to enjoy the wilderness at its best, choose the elephant  safari  route from Hollong, an  ecotourism destination  in North Bengal. There are three times when the  safari  commences in the early morning: 5:50-6:30 AM, 6:30-7:30 AM, and 7:30-8.30 AM.

It is preferable to book the 1st slot as the forest looks most beautiful at this time. Please note that the  jungle   safari  is open every day except Thursday.

During the  safari , you can see animals like rhinos, Asiatic elephants, sambars, hog deer, barking deer,  jungle  cats, giant squirrels, porcupines, pangolins, pythons, etc. Over 240 species of bird species, including peacocks, hornbills, green pigeons, barbets, and parakeets, can be seen on the  jungle   safari . Overall, a  jungle   safari  at Jaldapara National Park is worth every penny.

To enjoy nature to its fullest, you can stay in the Hollong forest bungalow overnight and book the next morning’s  safari .

2. Ranthambore Jungle Safari

Ranthambore Jungle Safari

Located in Rajasthan, at the junction of two of the oldest mountain ranges – the Aravallis and Vindyas – Ranthambore forest offers the most picturesque setting for a wildlife safari.

Ranthambore is famous for tiger safari, but it is also a home to a large variety of birds and animals. Some of these are the sloth bear, leopard, Indian wolf, deer, fox, hyena and mongoose.

Sakshi , blogger at Tripleamommy shares her experience.

My husband and I love going to National Parks. Ranthmabore is our favorite – both for its proximity to Delhi and the high chances of tiger sighting. The first time we went to Ranthambore was in April 2009 and we stayed at a government guest house.

The facilities were basic but that’s not really important when you are on an adventure trip. We were lucky to spot the tiger on our second trip and I can still feel the excitement of that moment!

We had been roaming the dry plains in our jeep when suddenly in a distance, there was a cacophony of birds and screeching of monkeys! A tiger was approaching! Our jeep joined at least 8-10 other jeeps and canters that scrambled to that area to sight the tiger, when it appeared majestically on the horizon. The second time we went was with our entire family and this time we stayed at the Taj Vivanta – it is a lovely property and other than the tiger safaris, just the stay at the property was great fun! ther than the safaris, Ranthambore has a lovely fort that history lovers would love to visit – the picturesque ruins and the temple make for a great visit.

You can reach Ranthambore by train – get off at the Sawai Madhopur station and in most cases the hotel will send their jeep to pick you up from the station. If you are in Jaipur or Delhi – NCR, you can also enjoy a lovely road trip to Ranthambore.

Book admission to Ranthambore Jungle Safari here . You can also book a complete day trip package from Jaipur

Places to stay in Ranthambore

Ranthambore Regency – a 4-star sustainable resort close to the national park

Sawai Madhopur Lodge – a 5-star sustainable romantic resort by Taj Vivanta, 12km from the national park

Six Senses Fort Barwara – a fort transformed into a 5-star resort, 30-minute drive from the national park

3. Kanha Tiger Reserve Jungle Safari

Kanha tiger Reserve also known as the Kanha -Kisli National Park is the largest national park in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It encompasses an area of 940 sq km and is divided into two zones- Mandla and Balaghat.

Welcome Jon Duncan from Backpacking Man to share his tips for Kanha Tiger Reserve

best jungle safaris

The  Kanha Tiger Reserve  is one of the best places in India to spot tigers in the wild and also makes for a great  jungle  experience in India. In fact, the area was the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s “The  Jungle  Book”, which says it all.

The obvious main thing to do in the area is to go on a day jeep  safari  through the reserve keeping an eye out for tigers, as well as lots of other wildlife such as deer and, if lucky, packs of wild dogs.

The driver of the jeep is accompanied by an expert ranger/guide who will be able to track animal prints on the ground to try and find the wildlife.

Note that there are elephant  safaris available in the area which may seem adventurous, but these are not recommended as the elephants are not treated so well.

So, avoid that and promote ethical tourism and stick to going on a jeep safari  which is actually the best way to see a lot more of the reserve anyway.

4. Bhandavgarh Jungle Safari

best jungle safaris

Located in the Umaira district of Madhya Pradesh, India, Bhandavgarh National Park is a fantastic place for tiger safari. The core area of the park is 100 square-kilometers and is home to approximately 50 tigers.

Like Bandipur, there are two slots for 3-hour Jeep safaris, once at dawn, and again in late afternoon. The National Park has three main safari zones, namely – Tala Zone ,  Magadhi Zone  and  Khitauli Zone .

Tala Zone is the oldest and richest zone in terms of biodiversity.

One can chose between a jeep safari and an elephant safari at Bhandavgarh.

Once again, I could get Sakshi to share her experience in Bhandavgarh National Park.

In 2014, when the family was invited for a wedding in Jabalpur, we grabbed at the opportunity to stop at Bandhavgarh for a day. Took a train to Katni and then drove for about 2 hours to get to Bandhavgarh.

By the time we reached, it was late for the afternoon safari, so we took some time settling in and familiarizing ourselves with the property.

We turned in early as we had a very early morning safari. The slight chill at dawn combined with the hot chai and coffee served for the safari goers was a great start to the day.

And the sumptuous breakfast served after the safari was also very welcome. Even though we didn’t get to see the tiger, the safari ride itself was a lot of fun.

In the afternoon we left for Jabalpur, a lovely road trip and the most memorable for me were the blazing spring colors of the trees.

You can follow Sakshi on Instagram .

Places to stay for the safari

Tree House Hideaway – Built like an actual tree-house, it offers you a great opportunity for bird-watching. The property organizes a tiger safari every evening.

Bhandavgarh Tiger Lodge – This travel-sustainable property is located close to the maingate of the Bhandavgarh National Park from where you can book your safari.

5. Gir Forest Safari

best jungle safaris

The Sasan Gir Wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat is the only place in India where you can spot the rare Asiatic lions in the wild. The rough scrublands and dry forests enable tourists with an excellent opportunity to photograph the majestic animal in its natural habitat.

Ruma, blogger at The Holiday Story shares some tips.

Gir forest , also known as Sasan Gir, encompasses an area of 1.412 Km². At present, around 600 lions inhabit this forest land in Gujarat. Exploring this jungle through a safari is an exhilarating experience.

Early morning is the best time to go for a safari. Reporting time for the morning slot is 5:30 am. The IDs need to get verified first before boarding your choice of a safari vehicle. The gipsy or jeep will then take you through the Gir Jungle Trail .

There are several routes on this trail. The safari explores these trails in search of a glimpse of the mighty lions. Other than lions, you can also see deer, monkeys, langurs, and many species of birds. On visiting the Kamleshwar dam, you can also see crocodiles and birds like pelicans.

Apart from safari, you can visit the Kankai Mata temple or Jamjir waterfall. Both of these attractions are within the forest vicinity. You can also shop from the souvenir shop located in this national park. Drop by the Durbar Hall Museum to learn a bit about the history of Gujarat.

You can book a Gir Safari here .

6. Jim Corbett National Park

Ipsita from Nomad Enroute shares her tips

best jungle safaris

Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve, the first tiger reserve in India, is spread across a vast land of 520 square kilometers in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand.

It came into being in 1936 while in 1973 the Project Tiger was first launched under which tiger and other endangered species were to be preserved in their natural habitat.

The rare species such as otters and the endemic fish-eating crocodile, along with a significant number of tigers have found their home in the dense forest of Jim Corbett .

On the road we spotted a sambar running towards the jungle . Several deer were gliding along the riverbed, among which we could recognize a swamp deer (barasingha), which is now extinct in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The booking is handled by the forest department following the strict guideline set by the department.

You can book the safari online, with the requisite documentation supporting your request. Full name, address, age, sex and ID card number. The time-slots for the safari are 6 am to 9:30 am and 3 pm to 6 pm.

For Indians, it costs Rs. 4500 to hire a jeep, which includes 6 adults and 2 children between the age group 5-12. For foreigners, it costs Rs. 9000 for 6 adults and 2 children. Remember that charges must be made in advance and in case your plan gets cancelled, you won’t be refunded.

7. Kaziranga Jungle Safari

Welcome Vidyut from Triplyzer who shares his experience in the Kaziranga Safari

best jungle safaris

Kaziranga National Park is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. There are numerous tiger safaris in India, but safari here has something unique to offer – the one-horned rhino, a rare beast!

I visited Kaziranga as part of my  northeast India itinerary,  stayed overnight in the nearby town, and took the safari in the morning. For safari, you can either take a jeep or ride an elephant. I preferred the jeep for ethical reasons, but honestly, an elephant ride does sound fun.

Safaris start as early as 5.30 am in summer and it’s best to do it when it is still cool. The jeep safaris take about 2 hours, keep your DSLR with zoom lens ready as you will come across an abundance of wildlife.

There are four different safaris taking you to different zones in the park. If you start early, you can easily visit two of these. Central Range (Kohora) and the Western range (Bagori) are the two most popular, the former is known for the beautiful grassy landscape while the latter boasts of easy Rhino sightings.

The state government-run dedicated buses from the bus station at Paltan bazaar to Kaziranga, making it cheap and easy to get here. Since the journey is over 5 hours long, stay in Kohora as it has plenty of budget and premium options.

So here ends my post on the best jungle safaris in India – selected by travel bloggers. This was based on diversity of experiences and the endangered species that the forests preserve. I hope this will help you select your next holiday destination. Please share it and subscribe to the blog if you like the content.

India’s best jungle safari destinations for the season

Precious Rongmei , TIMESOFINDIA.COM , TRAVEL TRENDS , INDIA Updated : Nov 12, 2023, 10:15 IST

best jungle safaris

India’s unparalleled biodiversity is the main reason why jungle safaris are such incredibly fun things to do. India’s wild has some of the rarest animals in the world and offers a chance to see diverse landscapes. From dense forests to unending grasslands and marshes, there’s so much to see in India’s wild, and all these enhance the safari experience by adding an element of adventure and thrill.

Here's a friendly advice, if you are out for safaris, keep an open mind that you may or may not get tiger sightings. A true friend of wildlife will simply enjoy nature and everything around. And lucky for us, our forests are stunning!

Jawai Bandh Leopard Conservation Reserve, Rajasthan

Take a break from the tigers and elephants and give chance to the leopards. They are known to be elusive and they don't come out in the open so much. But that's not the case in Jawai. This is their natural habitat and this is where they thrive. Take a jeep safari around to see them in their best element. When here, you can opt for a traditional stay with a homestay accommodation; the place is also home to some reputed luxe brands, including the Sujan Jawai Camp, Korta Escape and more for those in mood to splurge some.

Kabini, Karnataka

Kabini is one of the best places in south India where you can have unforgettable safari experiences. There are jeep, bus and elephant safaris available, but the jeep safari is the most popular one. Reason being, it offers more in-depth exploration of the forest. When in Kabini, watch out for leopards, dholes, elephants, tigers, gaurs, bears and bison. Did you know that the forest of Kabini is also home to India's only known black panther? This sighting is as rare as they come. The panther is lovingly named Saaya, meaning, shadow.

Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest and one of the most famous national parks in India. Here, jungle safaris take you to the heart of the forest to see the majestic tigers, leopards, elephants, and close to 600 species of birds!

Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

Ranthambore is known for its thriving tiger population and offers excellent opportunities for tiger sightings. When in Ranthambore, one can’t help but be completely mesmerised by the diverse landscape. From dense forest patches and dry grasslands to rocky outcrops, find them all here.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Kaziranga is one of the most popular safari destinations in India, mainly because of the unique experiences. From elephant safaris into the rhino territories to a chance to sight some of the rarest animals and birds like the white tiger and Bengal florican, Kaziranga is an experience you will never forget.

Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Kanha National Park is known for its lush sal and bamboo forests, the home to the majestic Bengal tigers. The forests of Kanha are some of the most beautiful in India, and they are great places to spot tigers, leopards, and barasingha (swamp deer). Kanha National Park is also one of India’s top birding destinations.

Sundarbans National Park, West Bengal

When we talk about the best and the most unique, Sundarbans is one of the first names that comes up. The Sundarbans is a unique mangrove forest known for its population of Bengal tigers that swim and hunt in the water. It's also home to saltwater crocodiles and various bird species. The mangrove boat safaris are unforgettable.

Periyar National Park, Kerala

It’s a mix of jungle safari and boat safari at Periyar National Park. Here you are in elephant territory so the best thing to do is sit tight and enjoy the gentle giants of the forest. The banks of the Periyar River are some of the best places to see wild elephant herds in action.

Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Bandhavgarh has given us some of the most legendary tigers India has ever seen. From the legends of the past like Sita, Charger and Bamera to the present-day star like Mahaman, Bandhavgarh’s tigers have given us numerous stories, and we keep going for more.

Bandipur National Park, Karnataka

Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and offers opportunities to see tigers, elephants, and a variety of bird species. It's known for its lush forests and scenic beauty.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra

Tadoba is one of the best places to spot the Bengal tiger. As of now, it’s the tigress Maya that has been ruling the forest for quite some time now and is a big crowd-puller. This beauty is fearless and one of the most photogenic big cats you will ever come across.

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra

The lush forest of Pench inspired Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book and we can see why. The forest’s beauty is unparalleled. The dense sal forest and the vast grasslands give some of the best photo-ops in the wild. This park is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to tigers, leopards, and various bird species.

Jhalana Leopard Safari Park, Rajasthan

Jhalana Leopard Safari Park is small in size, just 23 sq km in total, but it gives some of the most thrilling wildlife experiences. The park is home to around 30-35 leopards. Leopard sighting is not at all difficult here. The park is also located in the heart of Jaipur city, so it makes for a great quick getaway.

10 Best African Countries for Safari

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/mammals/" title="mammal">mammal</a> species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.</p> <p>Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

best jungle safaris

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

best jungle safaris

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

best jungle safaris

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

best jungle safaris

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.
