After a long, tiresome day of racing, stage 18 of the 2023 Tour de France completed on July 20 in Bourg-En-Bresse, France. 

Kasper Asgreen , the Danish cyclist who rides for the UCI WorldTeam Soudal–Quick-Step, emerged as the winner of the stage. This was his first stage win of the 2023 Tour de France and he is now ranked 87th in the Tour de France current standings.

Jasper Philipsen FORCES RIVAL TO ROADSIDE In Stage 18 Of The Tour de France 2023

Tour de France 2022 Route stage 18: Lourdes - Hautacam

The riders clip into their pedals near the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and leave the pilgrimage site behind to enter the Pyrenees. On virtually flat roads the route travels to Laruns and after 60 kilometres in the saddle the climbing begins.

The Col d’Aubisque is a climb of 16.4 kilometres at 7.1% before the riders descend via the Col du Soulor to Ferrières. That’s the base of the Col de Spandelles, which is a 10.3 kilometres climb at 8.3%.

A long descent leads to Argelès-Gazost, and that’s the base of the finish climb.

The ascent to ski resort Hautacam is a scenic one-way climb. The length is 13.6 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 7.8%. The second half is the hardest part with kilometres 8, 9 and 11 standing out – respectively with gradients at 10.3%, 11.3%, and 10.4%.

It’s the sixth time the Hautacam ascent is included in the Tour de France. Luc Leblanc won in 1994, Bjarne Riis in 1996 , Javier Otxoa in 2000, Juan José Cobo in 2008, and in 2014 Vincenzo Nibali took the win. With the exception of Otxoa and Nibali all these riders were affiliated with doping at some point in their career.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

Asgreen sprints to thrilling stage 18 win as Vingegaard retains solid Tour lead

• Quartet survive high-speed pursuit after joining forces

Jonas Vingegaard retained his overall lead in the Tour de France as Soudal Quick-Step’s Kasper Asgreen won stage 18 in Bourg-en-Bresse. Asgreen was one of four riders in the day’s breakaway to survive a thrilling pursuit by the speeding peloton, as the race left the Alps behind and entered the Rhone valley.

The four-rider attack, composed of Asgreen, Jonas Abrahamsen of Uno-X and the Lotto Dstny pair of Victor Campenaerts and Pascal Eenkhoorn, joined forces with 50km to race and maintained a slim lead into the closing moments of the stage.

Racing at more than 60km/h, the quartet entered the final kilometre with only six seconds’ advantage on their chasers, yet Campenaerts’s time-trialling power kept the group ahead. Asgreen’s last-gasp acceleration to the line was enough to hold off the sprinter Jasper Philipsen, already the winner of four stages, and his Alpecin-Deceuninck team.

Asgreen was generous in victory and praised his breakaway companions. “I really couldn’t have done it without Pascal, Victor and Jonas,” he said. “We all deserved to win with the work we put out there.”

Asgreen, a former winner of the Tour of Flanders, was making a return to form after struggling for more than a year. “It means so much,” he said. “With the period I had the last year, with my crash in the Tour of Switzerland, and having to leave the Tour de France last year ... I’ve come a long way.”

Meanwhile, after his exploits in the Alps, Vingegaard enjoyed a relatively uneventful day, although his Jumbo-Visma squad lost Wout van Aert, one of his key teammates. The Belgian left the race to be with his wife, who is expected to give birth within the next few days.

“It’s not a dilemma,” the Belgian rider said. “It’s an easy decision. I always thought that I would go home when my wife indicated she needed me. That time has come.”

As Van Aert left the race, the scrutiny of his team leader continued with Olivier Banuls, head of the cycling unit at the International Testing Agency, (ITA) telling Reuters that performance had been taken into account when targeting Vingegaard for testing.

“Performance is one of the criteria and obviously Vingegaard’s performance is one of them for us, so he is obviously targeted in particular,” Banuls said. “There are also other criteria for riders, such as biological passports or information we get from our Intelligence and Investigation Unit.”

Banuls revealed that Vingegaard, who leads Tadej Pogacar by seven minutes and 35 seconds, has been tested 18 times during the Tour and was also tested eight times in June, both in and out of competition.

Compared with Pogacar, who raced throughout much of the spring until he fractured his wrist in April, much of the Dane’s title defence was founded on a series of training camps at altitude.

“We have different places,” he said of the camps, “so in February we go to Tenerife, to Teide. In May, we go to Sierra Nevada and in June we went to Tignes.”

Pogacar’s partner, Urska Zigart, meanwhile, revealed that the Slovenian had nearly quit the Tour after the fifth stage, when he learned that she had crashed while racing in the Giro Donne in Italy.

“He called me to ask how I was and then, when I told him I hadn’t finished the race and had crashed, he said he was coming home,” she said. “I said: ‘No you’re not, it’s the Tour.’”

Pogacar, whose Tour challenge collapsed dramatically in Wednesday’s stage to Courchevel , said he had recovered “a bit” from the experience.

“The start [on Thursday] was pretty hard and quite – not emotional – but just a lot of guys came and spoke to me,” he said. “Thanks to all the riders. They cheered me up.”

Profil und Einschätzung - die 18. Etappe der Tour de France 2023 im Überblick

Einschätzung: Einen Tag nach den Alpen wird den Gesamtklassement-Fahrern eine wohlverdiente Ruhepause auf dem Rad gegönnt: Der 18. Abschnitt geht sehr flach dahin, es stehen lediglich zwei "Hügel" der vierten Kategorie auf dem Plan sowie eine anschließende Sprintwertung. Was bedeutet, dass ein Großteil des Pelotons Interesse daran haben wird, das Feld so lange wie möglich beisammenzuhalten. Viele Teams werden in die Führungsarbeit involviert sein, Ausreißer haben es da schwer. Womöglich wird diese Konstellation dazu führen, dass wir es mit einem sehr schnellen Tagesabschnitt zu tun bekommen. Das Ziel in Bourg-en-Bresse verspricht einen Massensprint.

Nøglepunktet

De sidste to kilometer. Der kommer tre skarpe sving fra 1700 til 800 meter fra målstregen, hvor der vil være kæmpe kamp om at ramme sektionen helt forrest i feltet.

Dagens dansker

Det er efterhånden over en uge siden, at der var en etape, som virkelig lå til Mads Pedersen . I dag og de kommende dage kommer der heldigvis flere muligheder for ham og de ryttere, der ikke er alt for glade for bjergene.

Det bliver med stor sandsynlighed en massespurt, og nu er vi så langt inde i løbet, at det altså er nogle trætte ben, der skal spurtes med i Bourg-en-Bresse – og det er vand på Mads' mølle.

Betydning for Vingegaard

Løbet har for længst sat sig, og uanset om Vingegaard er i den gule trøje eller ej, så bliver det en dag, hvor det handler om at spare på kræfterne så meget som overhovedet muligt. Det har været nogle meget hårde dage for alle rytterne og især klassementsrytterne.

Og der venter stadig en svær og tricky 20. etape, så disse dage handler for Vingegaard om at lade op til dén – men selvfølgelig sidde rigtigt i feltet og bruge sit hold på den korrekte måde, så han holder sig ude af problemer.

Det er en dag, der lægger op til massespurt.

Hvis etapen havde ligget i løbets første uge, ville jeg være 100 procent sikker på en spurt, men her i sidste uge af Touren kan flere sprintere være udgået, og der vil derfor være færre hold til at tage føringen i feltet.

Det åbner en spinkel mulighed for, at et udbrud kan køre hjem, hvis de rigtige hold er involveret i det. Men med 95 procents sandsynlighed bliver det en massespurt.

Tadej Pogacar, encore et toujours. Parti à 30 kilomètres de l’arrivée, le Slovène de la formation UAE Team Emirates a remporté en solitaire la 6e étape du Tour de Catalogne 2024, en altitude à Queralt. Déjà leader au classement général, Pogi a enfoncé le clou sur ses poursuivants. La bonne affaire du jour a été pour Egan Bernal, 2e de l'étape devant Mikel Landa.

Katalonien-Rundfahrt 2024 Ergebnisse: Wer holt heute den Sieg auf der Abschluss-Etappe in Barcelona?

Tadej Pogačar hat eigentlich freie Bahn bei der Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, der Katalonien-Rundfahrt 2024. Weder Vorjahressieger Primož Roglič ist am Start, auch Tour-Konkurrent Jonas Vingegaard hat nicht gemeldet. Sicher, Konkurrenz gibt es dennoch genug. Doch wer sich an Pogačars Monster-Solo beim diesjährigen Strade Bianche erinnert, kann schon Zweifel haben, ob Simon Yates, Aleksandr Vlasov, Mikel Landa, Sepp Kuss oder João Almeida zu diesem Zeitpunkt der Saison wirklich mithalten können oder wollen. Zumal Almeida bekanntlich auch noch Team-Kamerad von Pogačar ist.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya 2024: Die Etappen der Katalonien-Rundfahrt 2024

Die Katalonien-Rundfahrt umfasst auch in diesem Jahr sieben Etappen, die vom Montag, 18. März 2024, bis zum Sonntag, 24. März 2024, ausgetragen werden. Gleich drei schwere Bergetappen müssen die Fahrer dabei bewältigen. Es ist ein Terrain, das Pogačar entgegenkommt - natürlich aber auch Kuss, Yates und Co.

Katalonien-Rundfahrt 2024 in TV und Live-Stream sehen

Sie können die Katalonien-Rundfahrt hierzulande im TV und Live-Stream verfolgen. Der Frühjahrs-Klassiker wird von Privatsender Eurosport zumindest teilweise übertragen. Startschuss ist am Montag, 18. +++ 23.03.2024: Gesamtsieg greifbar: Pogacar mit drittem Erfolg in Katalonien +++

Tadej Pogacar kommt dem Gesamtsieg bei der Katalonien-Rundfahrt immer näher. Der Slowene gewann am Samstag nach einer harten Kletterpartie seine dritte Etappe und baute seinen Abstand in der Gesamtwertung auf den direkten Verfolger Mikel Landa auf 3:31 Minuten aus. Nach den 154 Kilometern auf dem sechsten Teilstück kam Pogacar 57 Sekunden vor dem Kolumbianer Egan Bernal und dem Drittplatzierten Landa über die Ziellinie.

«Heute war wirklich eine harte Etappe», sagte der 25-jährige Pogacar. Das Teilstück am vorletzten Tag der Rundfahrt hatte es in sich. Die Profis mussten 4000 Höhenmeter und dabei drei Anstiege der dritten und jeweils einen der zweiten und ersten Kategorie bewältigen. Die Schlussetappe endet am Sonntag mit einer hügeligen Etappe mit Start und Ziel in Barcelona.

+++ 20.03.2024: Zweiter Etappensieg: Pogacar dominiert Katalonien-Rundfahrt +++

Tadej Pogacar hat bei der Katalonien-Rundfahrt erneut seine Überlegenheit ausgespielt und auch die zweite Bergankunft gewonnen. Der slowenische Radstar setzte sich am Mittwoch auf der dritten Etappe als Solist in Port Ainé durch. In der Gesamtwertung baute der 25-Jährige seine Führung auf 2:27 Minuten vor dem Spanier Mikel Landa aus, der auf dem 176,7 Kilometer langen Teilstück Platz zwei belegte. Der Russe Alexander Wlassow vom deutschen Team Bora-hansgrohe ist 2:55 Minuten zurück Dritter.

Pogacar wartete mit seiner Attacke bis 7,3 Kilometer vor dem Ziel in dem über 1700 Meter hohen Skigebiet. Wie schon am Vortag bei der ersten Bergankunft war ihm keiner seiner Widersacher gewachsen. Für den zweimaligen Sieger der Tour de France war es der dritte Sieg beim fünften Start in diesem Jahr, wobei er nie schlechter als Dritter war. Pogacar nutzt die Rundfahrt als Vorbereitung auf den Giro d'Italia, den er im Mai erstmals gewinnen möchte.

Der Donnerstag ist ein Tag für die Sprinter. Auf den 169,2 Kilometern von Sort nach Lleida ist lediglich ein Berg der zweiten Kategorie zu bezwingen, die zweite Etappenhälfte ist nahezu flach. Das Rennen endet am Sonntag in Barcelona.

+++ 19.03.2024: Pogacar gewinnt Bergankunft +++

Radstar Tadej Pogacar hat bei Regen und Kälte die erste Bergankunft bei der 103. Katalonien-Rundfahrt im Alleingang gewonnen und damit die Führung in der Gesamtwertung übernommen. Der 25 Jahre alte Slowene setzte sich am Dienstag auf der zweiten Etappe über 186,5 Kilometer von Mataro nach Vallter 2000 mit deutlichem Vorsprung auf den Spanier Mikel Landa durch. Am Montag hatte Pogacar den Etappensieg noch knapp hinter dem Australier Nick Schultz verpasst.

Zur Hälfte des 11,4 Kilometer langen und durchschnittlich 7,4 Prozent steilen Schlussanstiegs setzte sich Pogacar aus der Gruppe der Favoriten ab und vergrößerte schnell seinen Vorsprung. In 2135 Metern Höhe feierte er schließlich seinen 65. Profisieg. Den Sprint um Platz zwei mit einem Rückstand von gut 80 Sekunden gewann Landa vor dem Russen Alexander Wlassow vom deutschen Bora-hansgrohe-Team.

Pogacar, der am Samstag hauchdünn seinen ersten Sieg beim Klassiker Mailand-Sanremo verpasst hatte, nutzt die Katalonien-Rundfahrt als Vorbereitung auf den Giro d'Italia. Am Mittwoch folgt die nächste Bergankunft in Port Ainé. Das Mehretappenrennen endet am Sonntag in Barcelona.

+++ 18.03.2024: Pogacar sprintet auf Platz zwei +++

Nur zwei Tage nach seinem dritten Platz beim schweren Frühjahrsklassiker Mailand-Sanremo hat sich Radstar Tadej Pogacar zum Auftakt der 103. Katalonien-Rundfahrt gleich wieder in Szene gesetzt. Der Slowene belegte auf der ersten Etappe über 173,9 Kilometer mit Start und Ziel in Sant Feliu de Guixols beim Bergaufsprint den zweiten Platz hinter dem Australier Nick Schultz, der einen Kilometer vor dem Ziel attackiert hatte. Pogacar war im Finale der deutlich schnellste Fahrer, konnte Schultz aber nicht mehr rechtzeitig einholen.

Platz drei belegte der Brite Stephen Williams. Schultz führt damit auch die Gesamtwertung vor Pogacar an. Der frühere Tour-de-France-Sieger Egan Bernal (Kolumbien), der während der Etappe noch drei Bonussekunden geholt hatte, war unterdessen im Finale in einen Sturz verwickelt.

Pogacar hatte am Samstag hauchdünn seinen ersten Sieg beim Klassiker Mailand-Sanremo verpasst, als er hinter Sprintkönig Jasper Philipsen (Belgien) und dem Australier Michael Matthews (Australien) den dritten Platz belegt hatte. Zuvor war er mit einem Sieg beim Schotterrennen Strade Bianche in die Saison gestartet. Die Katalonien-Rundfahrt, die am Dienstag mit der Bergankunft in Vallter 2000 fortgesetzt wird, dient dem zweimaligen Tour-Champion als Vorbereitung auf den Giro d'Italia.
