Applying for a South African Visa

Visitors' visas are for international travellers (citizens of other countries) who wish to visit the country on a temporary basis for tourism or business purposes for a period of 90 days or less.

The visa will allow you to travel to a South African port of entry where an immigration official will then determine if you are allowed to enter South Africa and for how long you can stay for that particular visit. Visitors are restricted to the activity or purpose for which their visas were issued.

On entry to South Africa, a visa is considered to be a visitor's permit. The permit's period of validity is calculated from the date of entry into the country and will be set out under the heading "conditions" on the visa label. You must ensure that you apply for the correct visa/permit. Entry in the country may be refused if the purpose of visit was not correctly stated.

Requirements for visitor's visas differ from country to country and the requirements are subject to change. Remember that there is a fee charged for issuing a visa.

All visa applications have to be lodged in person at the mission in Canberra by prior appointment only to book an appointment please call the mission or email: [email protected]

Australian visa requirements for South Africans

Australia, with its stunning landscapes, diverse culture, and strong economy, is a popular destination for South Africans seeking travel, work, and study opportunities. South African citizens are generally required to obtain a visa to enter Australia. This article will provide an in-depth overview of Australian visa types available to South Africans, the essential document requirements, and the visa application process.

Types of Australian visas for South Africans

Australia offers a range of visa options catering to different purposes, including tourism, business, work, and study. Here are some of the most common visa types for South Africans:

1. Tourist Visa (Visitor Visa, Subclass 600)

The Tourist Visa allows South Africans to visit Australia for leisure, family visits, or short-term business trips. It is typically granted for 3, 6, or 12 months.

2. Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 and 462)

Working Holiday Visas are popular among young South Africans aged 18 to 30 or 35, allowing them to work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months.

3. Student Visa (Subclass 500)

For South Africans wishing to study in Australia, the Student Visa is necessary. This visa permits you to enroll in full-time courses at a registered Australian institution.

4. Skilled Migration Visas

South Africans with certain skills and qualifications may be eligible for skilled migration to Australia. Popular options include the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) and the Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190).

5. Partner Visa

If you are in a genuine relationship with an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you can apply for a Partner Visa to join your partner in Australia.

Dual Nationality

Dual nationality is a situation where an individual is a citizen of two countries, often due to birth, descent, or naturalization. For South Africans with dual nationality, it’s essential to understand that visa requirements for Australia can differ based on the passport they choose to use when applying. Here are some key points to consider:

Eligibility : Some visa types, such as the Working Holiday Visa, may have specific nationality requirements. Be sure to check the eligibility criteria for the visa you wish to apply for and ensure that your chosen passport meets those requirements.

Visa Validity : Depending on your nationality, the validity of your Australian visa may vary. Ensure you are aware of the visa’s duration and any conditions associated with it.

Renewals and Extensions : If you have dual nationality and your visa is expiring, consider whether you can renew or extend it with your alternate passport, if eligible.

Language requirements for Australian visa applications

Language requirements are critical, especially for visa types involving work, study, or migration. Proficiency in the English language is often necessary to facilitate successful integration into Australian society. Here’s what you need to know:

Skilled Migration Visas : For skilled migration to Australia (e.g., Skilled Independent Visa, Subclass 189), applicants are typically required to demonstrate proficiency in English. The acceptable language tests for proving English language skills include the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Occupational English Test (OET), the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT), and the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic).

English Proficiency Levels : Different visas may have specific English language proficiency levels that applicants must meet. These levels are measured through various language tests and can vary based on the visa subclass.

Visa Application Process : To fulfill the language requirement, you will need to take the approved language test and achieve the minimum required score. The test results are a crucial part of your visa application.

Exemptions : Some individuals may be exempt from English language requirements. This includes applicants from countries where English is the primary language, or those with specific work experience or qualifications in English-speaking countries.

Document requirements

When applying for an Australian visa as a South African, you will need to provide specific documents to support your application. These documents generally include:

1. Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from Australia. It is also advisable to have at least one blank page for visa stamps.

Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
  • Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
  • Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
  • Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
  • Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.

If you haven’t already, read the  Australia Visa Guide  to familiarize yourself with Australian tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility and entry procedures at the border.

Where to Apply for Australian Visa in South Africa?

Wondering where to apply for an Australian visa in South Africa? If you’re not sure where you should submit your visa application, you’re not alone—getting the right visa and making sure it goes through the appropriate channels can be very tricky, especially if it’s your first time applying. This guide will help you find out where to apply for an Australian Visa in South Africa and answer all of your other questions about getting Australian visas in South Africa. You can apply for your visas on the official website of the Australian High Commission. Or apply at the visa application centre in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban.

Are you eligible?

To be eligible for a visa you need to meet the following criteria:

you are aged 18 years or over;

you hold a valid passport from your home country; you meet health and character requirements as set out by the Department of Home Affairs (this includes not having any criminal convictions);

you have sufficient funds to cover your costs of living, including accommodation, food and other expenses, while you’re in Australia;

How long will it take?

It will take between four and six months to process your application, so it’s a good idea to start the process now. The Department of Home Affairs has a dedicated service centre for Australians applying for visas, but the wait can be long. It’s best to book an appointment early in the process – before you book flights or accommodation – and get prepared with all of your supporting documentation. Plan ahead and apply at least two months before your intended travel date.

How much will it cost?

There are 2 types of fees which are payable: (1) an application service fee, and (2) a visa application charge. Last we checked it will cost you, the application fee is AUD140.00.

It is important to know the type of visa you are applying for. Different visas have different costs associated with them, and a person may be required to get a visa from one country before being able to apply for a visa from another. For example, if someone wishes to apply for an Australian visitor visa from within South Africa, they will need to apply first from their home country or region.

What supporting documents do I need?

It is important that you have all the supporting documents and information before applying for your visa. Your application will not be considered complete until all the documentation has been submitted.

First, check to see if there are any relevant specific requirements for your visa. For example, a Criminal Convictions Declaration form may be required when applying for a Working Holiday or Parent Visa, depending on whether you have ever been convicted of a criminal offence (or sentenced to imprisonment) in any country other than Australia, whether on your own behalf or otherwise. If any documents are missing from your submission, we will contact you with this information so it can be obtained as soon as possible.

What happens if I don’t have my documents in order?

If you can’t provide all the required documents, you may need a document from a different country. For example, if you don’t have a birth certificate, you might obtain one from your home country or from the country where your parents were born.

How long do I have to wait for a decision on my application?

You will usually receive a decision on your application within approximately one month, but processing times can vary depending on where you are submitting your application. If you have submitted by post, you should allow six weeks before contacting the department.

How long can I stay in Australia once my visa has been granted?

You can stay in Australia indefinitely if you have a permanent residence visa. If you need a temporary visa, the length of your stay will depend on the type of visa you are granted. For example, if you are granted a student visa, it is valid for five years and allows stay up to three months at any one time.

Apply for a visa

If you want to visit South Africa, you must produce a valid visa before you can enter into the country. A visa will be issued for a visit for tourism or business purposes and is valid for a period of 90 days.

Some countries are exempted from visa control, which means that citizens from those countries do not need a visa to visit South Africa.

Visas are not issued at South African ports of entry, and airline officials must insist on visas before allowing passengers to board. If you arrive without a visa, immigration officials are obliged to put you onto a flight back to your home country. Depending on your intended visit, you can apply for a Visitor’s Visa or a Transit Visa. Find out more about the:

How to apply for a visa to come to the UK

Choose a visa.

You may need a visa to come to the UK to study, work, visit or join family.

There are different visas depending on:

  • where you come from
  • why you want to come to the UK
  • how long you want to stay for
  • your personal circumstances and skills

Before you apply, you must check if you need a visa and what type you need. Depending on your nationality, you might not need a visa to visit or transit through the UK.

Your application must be approved before you travel.

You do not need to apply for a visa if you’re an Irish citizen.

If you want to visit the UK

Apply for a Standard Visitor visa to visit the UK for up to 6 months. For example:

  • for a holiday or to see family and friends
  • for a business trip or meeting
  • to do a short course of study

You must apply for a Marriage Visitor visa if you want to visit the UK to get married or register a civil partnership.

If you have a visitor visa you cannot take a job in the UK.

If you’re travelling through the UK

You might need a visa if you’re travelling through the UK on your way to another country, for example if you have a layover between flights.

Apply for a visa to travel through the UK .

If you want to study in the UK

Your course length, type and place of study affect which visa to apply for.

A Standard Visitor visa lets you do a short course of study that lasts no longer than 6 months.

A Short-term study visa lets you come to the UK to study an English language course that is over 6 months and up to 11 months.

A Student visa is usually for a longer course. You must be sponsored by a licensed college or university and have a confirmed place. On this visa, you may be able to do some work.

A Child Student visa is for 4 to 17 year olds who want to study at an independent school. If you’re 16 or over, this visa lets you do some work.

If you want to work in the UK

You can work in the UK on a short or long-term basis with a work visa. There are many types of work visa .

The visa you need depends upon:

  • your skills and qualifications
  • if you have a job offer and sponsorship
  • if you want to bring your family with you
  • what you’ll be doing - for example sporting, charitable or religious work

You can set up a business with an Innovator Founder visa .

If you want to join family in the UK

If you’re a spouse, partner or family member of someone who has British citizenship or settlement in the UK, you can apply for a family visa to join them. They may need to show that they can support you financially.

You may be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain ( ILR ) after a set amount of time living in the UK.

If your family member is in the UK on a visa

You may be able to apply for a visa to join a family member who’s in the UK on a visa. They must be either:

  • your spouse or partner
  • your parent if you’re 18 or under

Check what visa you’ll need to join them.

Family reunion visas for refugees

If you were separated from your partner or child when you were forced to leave your country, they can apply to join you in the UK.

Your family members can apply if you have been given asylum or 5 years’ humanitarian protection, and not have British citizenship.

If your family member is from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein

You can apply for a free EU Settlement Scheme family permit to come to the UK if you have a close family member who:

  • was living in the UK by 31 December 2020

  • you had a relationship with by 31 December 2020 (unless you’re applying for a child who was born or adopted after this date)

Close family members include your spouse or civil partner, child, grandchild, parent or grandparent.

A family permit lets you live, work and study in the UK for up to 6 months. You can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to stay in the UK after your family permit expires. You usually need to apply within 3 months of arriving in the UK.

Other ways to get permission to live in the UK

If you’re from the eu, switzerland, norway, iceland or liechtenstein.

If you started living in the UK by 31 December 2020, you may be able to apply to the free EU Settlement Scheme instead of applying for a visa. The deadline to apply was 30 June 2021, but you can still apply if you can show reasonable grounds for the delay in applying.

Check if you can still apply to the EU Settlement Scheme .

You can only apply from outside the UK if you have a valid passport or national identity card with a biometric chip.

Returning residents

You’ll need to apply for a returning resident visa to come back to the UK if one of the following is true:

you had indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme (‘settled status’) and left the UK for more than 5 continuous years (or 4 continuous years if you’re a Swiss citizen or their family member)

you had permanent permission to stay in the UK (‘indefinite leave to remain’) but it was not under the EU Settlement Scheme and you left the UK for more than 2 years

Other visas

There may be another visa that’s right for you based on your circumstances. Check if you need a visa and what other visas you’re eligible for.
