The Files app has grown into a full-fledged document and file management app with the latest iOS releases, iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. You can now easily copy files between multiple file services, download files locally, and even connect up removable storage to copy files to and from.

In this article, we’ll delve into how to manage internet downloads from Safari, configure the local location in the Files app, and copy or move files to and from removable storage from local storage.

How to manage your local storage

iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 allow you to easily manage local storage. Local storage is a place where files can be stored locally on the SSD or device without storing it on a file sharing service or iCloud Drive.

Before you can begin storing files locally, you first need to enable the local storage inside of the Files app. To do this, perform these steps:

  • Open the Files app on your iOS device.
  • Select the “…” button in the sidebar on iPadOS, or in the root of the Browse tab on iOS.
  • Select Edit / Edit Sidebar.
  • Enable the switch for On My iPhone/iPad ( Figure A ).

Once you’ve done this, a new location will be added to the sidebar called On My iPhone/iPad. Tapping on this location will present you with the contents of the local file system. Folders for apps that have files stored locally will appear. In this location, you can create a new folder by tapping the Folder+ at the top of the screen.

You can easily copy files to this location from iCloud Drive or another service by tapping and dragging from the other service into this local location. The files added here will be stored on the device and if you go offline, they will still be available for manipulation without any need to rely on an internet connection.

This is a great place to store books, PDFs, or other documents that need to be frequently accessed when offline.

How to download files from Safari

Newer versions of Safari, including the one in iOS 13 and 14, can let you easily download files, such as zip files, PDFs, and more. To download a file in Safari, just tap on a download link on a website or tap and hold on a link and then tap Download Linked File ( Figure B ).

safari download manager ios 14

If you have an iCloud Drive account, by default, this will cause the files to be downloaded to a Downloads folder contained in your iCloud Drive account. However, you can change this setting so that the files are downloaded locally to your iPhone or iPad.

To change the download location in Safari, perform these steps:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Navigate to Safari | Downloads.
  • Select On My iPhone/iPad as the location to store downloaded files ( Figure C ).

safari download manager ios 14

Once a file is downloaded, it will be available in the Files app at the selected location.

Inside of this Downloads view, you can also choose to clean up and remove downloaded list items. This is not removing the file itself, but rather the list items that appear when tapping the Download button in Safari’s toolbar. We tend to keep this on Upon Successful Download.

How to use removable storage

To use removable storage, you’ll first need to plug in the drive to your iPad or iPhone. To do this, you’ll either need a USB-C or Lightning compatible thumb drive, or use an adapter.

If you’re using an iPad with USB-C, then you can easily use any USB-C hub adapter to connect an external drive; if you’re using an iPad with a Lightning port or iPhone, then get the Apple Camera Connection Kit , and you can easily plug in a thumb drive or external drive. You may have issues with some iPad or iPhone models if you’re connecting an external drive that requires power to operate. Some iPhone and iPad models will only supply limited power over the Lightning port.

Once you’ve plugged in the adapter, then your external drive, open the Files app, and you’ll notice that your drive will automatically appear under the Locations section in the sidebar on iPadOS or the Browse tab in iOS ( Figure D ).

safari download manager ios 14

This works just like any other file location and you can easily tap, hold, and drag files to and from this location to your iPad, or vice versa. You can also drag files from cloud storage locations like iCloud Drive onto the external storage location.

Troubleshooting, how to download files from safari on iphone & ipad.

How to Download Files from Safari on iPhone & iPad

If you’ve ever wanted to download files from Safari to your iPhone or iPad, you’ll be pleased to know that Safari has a download manager in more recent versions of iOS and iPadOS.

Safari is widely used by iPhone and iPad users since it comes pre-installed on devices, and it works seamlessly. One major feature that the popular mobile browser had previously lacked is a download manager, but Apple has now implemented the download functionality as they pushing iOS and iPadOS towards a more desktop-class computing experience. The download feature of Safari may not seem obvious at first since it’s a bit hidden in the browser, however.

In this article, we’ll be discussing exactly how you can download files from Safari on to your iPhone and iPad, and how to find and access those downloaded files on the device.

Although Safari’s download manager is discrete, downloading files from the mobile browser is a fairly simple and straightforward procedure. Simply follow the steps below to get started.

Safari Icon

So that’s how you download files to iPhone and iPad from Safari, but the next question may be somewhat obvious; where do the downloaded files go, and how do you access them?

Where to Find Downloaded Files on iPhone & iPad

If you just downloaded files from Safari to iPad or iPhone, you can find those downloaded files by doing the following:

Files app icon on iPhone and iPad

There you go.

Now you’ve learned how to take advantage of Safari’s download manager to download any files from the web on to your iPhone and iPad, and also how to access those downloaded files directly on your device with the Files app.

It’s important to note that every time you open Safari after a download, you’ll see the download manager icon unless you cleared your downloads or permanently deleted the downloaded files from your iOS device. Therefore, as long as you don’t clear your downloads, you will be able to access and open the files right within Safari.

It wasn’t too long ago that iPhone and iPad did not have this functionality directly, except for saving certain file types like images and PDF files to Photos and iBooks type apps. This made some Android users criticize iOS for lacking the simple functionality to download files from the Safari web browser. But now that there’s a Files app, the Safari download manager is able to easily download files that can then be accessed through the iOS and iPadOS file system.

Until more recent iOS and ipadOS releases came out, iPhone and iPad users had to resort to third-party file manager and download manager apps that featured integrated web browsers to download files from the internet. If you ever used any of those to achieve the desired result, feel free to remove them because it’s probably not necessary to keep them around anymore.

If you use a popular third-party browser like Chrome or Firefox, you will not be able to download any files other than images or videos from the web, as they still lack a download manager. However, Mozilla is working on a download manager for Firefox, so we can expect other developers to add support for file downloads eventually too, and it’s quite likely that Chrome will gain the capability too.

We hope you were able to download files using Safari on your iPhone and iPad without any issues. Do you download files from the web to your device? Do you think this feature is an incentive to download more files directly on to your device rather than relying on a computer? Drop your opinions, thoughts, and experiences in the comments section down below.

From my iPhone SE 2020 on IOS 13.7, I see the down arrow next to the music choices, not on top where you show the red arrow. On top is still the reload icon, so I am a bit confused. So, If I go to a site where I want to download something that does not have a site specific arrow. What’s my next step ?

Thank you regardless, you guys are always the best for advice and appreciated daily !

The down arrows next to each music title are the download links for each of those tracks. Once you tap on one of those and start downloading the respective file, the blue download manager icon (down arrow in a circle) will then appear on the top right next to the address bar. Just tap on it to see the download progress and to access the file when the download completes.

Great to now have a download manager, but why does apple always have to leave some absurd restriction in place? at least on iPadOS the download manager should have come with the option somewhere in settings to change where downloaded files will go if we want them to go somewhere other than the default downloads folder in iCloud drive. We need that if the iPad is expected to become our new computer, as Apple touts in its marketing, because every mac and pc has that option.

You can change the download destination from Safari on iPad and iPhone by going to the Safari Settings.

The whole file management system in iOS and iPadOS needs work though, it’s nowhere near the capability or ease of Mac or Windows.

No you can’t. Not in iOS 13. Maybe you’re running the iOS 14 beta and that has changed there, but not on iOS 13.

I can access downloaded files in the Downloads folder on iCloud Drive using a third-party iOS file manager.

However, that may be a result of me keeping most in my data in clouds, rather than locally.

How to download files using safari on your iphone or ipad.

Need to quickly download a file on your iPhone or iPad? Here's how you can do this using Safari or a third-party app.

Quick Links

How to download files using safari, how to the change default download location, alternative for ios 12 users: documents 5 by readdle.

In your work or personal life, you'll sometimes need to download a file on your iPhone or iPad. Using the new feature introduced in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, you can now do this directly in Safari. No third-party app needed!

Safari's download manager is a hidden new feature in the  iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 updates. If you're going about your day, browsing the web, you probably won't be aware of the feature. Instead, it comes up when you tap on a download link.

Go to a web page and find the link for a file you want to download. When you select it, you'll see a popup with the filename asking if you want to download it. Tap on the "Download" button.

The download will start, and you'll see a new "Downloads" button appear next to the address bar at the top of the browser. Tap on the button to reveal all current downloads. From here, you can monitor the progress of multiple downloads.

If you want to stop a download at any time, simply tap on the "X" button.

Once the download is finished, tap on the file to preview it. If you've downloaded a media file, image, or a PDF, you'll be able to see it in the preview window.

You can then share the file to any app. Tap on the "Share" button from the bottom-left corner.

Press the "Search" icon next to the filename in the Downloads section to open the file.

Once you open the file in the Files app, you can tap and hold on the file to reveal the menu.

From here, tap on "Delete" to delete the file.

By default, the downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive in the Files app. This is a great option if you have a paid iCloud storage plan  because it allows your downloaded files to instantly sync across all your devices.

But if you're on the free, 5GB tier, you might not have space for storing large files.

Thankfully, you can change the default location to local storage. Open the "Settings" app and go to Safari > Downloads. If you can't find the browser on your phone, try using Apple's Spotlight search to locate it.

Here, switch the selection to "On My iPhone" or "On My iPad" depending on your device.

By default, Safari will pick the "Downloads" folder. You can change this by tapping on the "Other" option to select any folder from the local storage (or from a cloud storage option).

The new download manager in Safari is exclusive to iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and above. If you haven't updated to the latest OS (which you should), or if you're in a situation where you can't update, here's a workaround for you.

Try using the free Documents 5 app by Readdle . It's an all-in-one browser and file manager app.

Open the Documents 5 app and tap on the "Browser" button in the bottom-right corner to switch to the browser mode.

Now, navigate to the page with the download link and tap on it. From the next screen, select the folder where you want to download the file and tap on "Done."

The download will now start. You can tap on the "Downloads" tab to view all downloads.

Tap on the "Files" button from the bottom-left corner to switch to the file manager. From here, tap on the "Downloads" folder to see your downloaded file. You can tap on the download to preview it in the app. Tap on the "Menu" button to view options for opening the file in another app.

Safari's download manager is just one of the many new features in iOS 13. Take a look at our list of the  best iOS 13 features to learn more.

Best Download Manager Apps for iOS

When we first published this article, Safari on the iPhone and iPad lacked download management capabilities, and the only way to manage downloads was to use a third-party app for it.

But lately, Apple introduced native file management on the iPhone and iPad with the Files app in 2017. Two years later, Safari got its Download Manager, letting users store and manage downloads via the Files app on iPhone and iPad.

Over time, there have been improvements to the native download manager in Safari, which has made it one of the best download managers for the iPhone and iPad. But even so, there are a few things you need to set up to get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager.

This article will explore how to use Safari’s Download Manager to its full potential, as well as some third-party apps for download management on iPhone and iPad.

Note: The criteria for considering an app as a decent download manager for iOS still remains the same as before. The app should primarily be able to download all file types, display download speed, provide resume support for in-progress downloads, etc. It should also allow you to export the downloaded files to other apps, and provide basic support for opening common photo, audio, video & document formats.

Copy   Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Here, we’ll guide you to set up Safari on iOS and iPadOS, to get the most out of its Download Manager.

Copy   Set up your Download Manager

To get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager, it’s preferable to go through some basic setup.

The Downloads icon appears in the top-right corner within Safari, next to the address bar. But this icon is hidden by default unless a file is added to the download queue.

Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Now, you might have noticed that the icon automatically disappears after some time, even if you’ve downloaded files in the past.

If you need access to your download list items (Download History) at all times, there is an option you need to modify. The following steps will guide you to always show the Downloads icon in Safari.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and tap on Safari .
  • Under the “General” section, tap on Downloads .
  • Tap on Remove Download List Items , and select Manually .

While you’re here, you may also want to change the location for your downloads. By default, Safari saves your downloads in the Downloads folder within iCloud Drive.

If you frequently download files using Safari, that could consume unnecessary storage on iCloud, especially if you forget to delete temporary downloads. To avoid such a situation, it’s recommended that you change your Downloads location outside of iCloud Drive.

Set up Safari's Download Manager - iPhone and iPad

To do so, go to the Settings app, and navigate to Safari >> Downloads (under “General” section), and choose the On My iPhone/iPad option under the “Store Downloaded Files On” section, to save your downloads to the local Downloads folder. Alternatively, you may choose a custom location for your Downloads, by selecting “Other…” and choosing the appropriate folder.

Thereafter, when you download a file in Safari, it will be saved to your device in the selected location, and the same will be available in Safari’s Download List. And, as long as you don’t “Clear” the entire list, the Downloads icon should remain visible next to the address bar.

Note: To clear individual items from the Downloads list, go to Safari, tap on the Downloads icon, and instead of tapping on “Clear”, slide a specific item in the list from the right to reveal the Delete option, and then tap on Delete .

If you open a download link in Safari, there are two possible outcomes.

  • You get a pop-up with the options to either “View” or “Download” the file, or both.
  • The content or media behind the link directly opens in Safari.

Download files in Safari on iPhone, iPad

In the first scenario, you can tap on the Download button in the pop-up, which starts downloading the file.

In the second scenario, the below section(s) will guide you to download such files.

Copy   Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Some files, such as PDF, MP4, etc., may directly open in Safari when you click on a download link instead of showing the Download prompt. To download these files in Safari, do the following:

  • Open the web page containing the download link in Safari on the iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap and hold the download link to pop out and reveal additional options.
  • Scroll down through the associated options, and tap on Download Linked File .

The file will be added to the Downloads List (queue) in Safari and start downloading.

Copy   Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

If opening a direct download link in Safari doesn’t provide the “Download” pop-up, or if the “Download Linked File” option doesn’t appear when you tap & hold an embedded link, here is what you can do to download these files using Safari.

Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

  • Open the link in Safari for iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap on the Share icon from the bottom of the screen.
  • Scroll and select the Save to Files option.
  • Choose a preferred location to save the file, and tap on Save from the top right corner.

The file would be saved in the selected location.

Note: If the link is for an audio or video file, Safari will open it in its built-in media player. In this case, tap on the screen to reveal the player controls, and tap on the ‘X’ to close the player. Now you should be back in the Safari window, with the URL of the media available on the address bar. Proceed with Step #2 above to download the file.

Copy   Download Video from streaming sites in Safari on iPhone, iPad

If you want to download embedded videos or audio via Safari, you can use any suitable web media grabber, such as 9xBuddy , to parse the streaming link and get the direct download link to the source video or audio file.

Once you get the direct download link, you can download it in Safari just like any other file, as mentioned in the above sections. You may refer to this section of our dedicated article to learn how to do so.

Copy   Other Features of Safari’s Download Manager on iPhone and iPad

Resume Support: In Safari, if you access the Downloads list (by clicking on the Download icon next to the address bar) while downloading a file, you can pause a download temporarily by tapping on the “X” next to the file, and it changes to the “Resume” icon. You can come back later and resume the download again (if the server supports it) by tapping on the “Resume” icon. The Downloads list also allows you to view the progress of current downloads.

Background Downloads: Once a download starts, you may switch to other apps and continue working. The download should continue in the background without interruption. In our experience, background downloads in Safari on iPhone and iPad work much more reliably compared to background downloads on third-party download managers.

Hence, Safari’s built-in download manager on iOS and iPadOS is now powerful enough to handle and manage different types of file downloads. But if you still want to explore other third-party online downloader apps, the below section explores a few of them.

Copy   Third-party Download Manager apps for iPhone and iPad

Copy   documents – file manager with downloader.

Documents is one of the most popular file management apps on the iOS platform but also serves as a decent file downloader, especially because of its native support for a wide variety of file types both for viewing as well as for downloading. Being a full-fledged file management app, you can organize and store your files, and view them without having to export them to any other app.

Documents – File Manager with Downloader

Documents app provides additional features, including the option to add different connections (WebDAV, SFTP, SMB, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), rename the file, and set the download location at the time of file download, etc.

Documents app  is completely free without any limitations or ads. You can learn more about the versatile iOS file manager app, in our dedicated article.

Copy   Total Downloader – Download Manager for iPhone, iPad

Total Downloader is a file and download manager for iOS that satisfies almost all of the criteria to be considered as a decent download manager. Its built-in browser supports universal search and can download any type of file format.

From a particular web page, you can tap on a download link, and choose between whether you want to Download or Open (Navigate) it. Unlike many other downloader apps which directly open the file on clicking on the download button, Total handles it smartly by letting you decide the subsequent action.

Total Downloader - iPhone Download Manager

The Downloads tab in the Transfers screen lists all the active and inactive download tasks, which includes the current speed of the download, size of the download, and other details. Tapping on a particular download will allow you to Pause, Resume or Cancel the download. Completed downloads appear in the files tab, from where you can play or open the file, or export it to Photos (for photos and videos only) or other apps using the Open In option.

One of the most unique features of Total is its ability to grab embedded media links from specific streaming sites, like Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, etc. But to avoid legal issues, it explicitly disables the grabbing functionality from certain sites that primarily host original copyrighted content from artists/creators.

Total also has certain features of a file manager app. It supports the opening of common text, photo, audio, video, documents, and archive formats, also integrating a bunch of cloud services, including Dropbox Google Drive, OneDrive, and WebDAV services. Thus, you can directly sync the downloaded files with your preferred cloud service, and even stream media files from the cloud.

Some of the other notable features of Total include private browsing mode, bookmarks, and history management, user agent spoofing, PIN-protected folders, and much more.

The free version of Total is ad-supported. You can remove ads and upgrade to the pro version of the app with an in-app purchase of $4.99.

Copy   Files – Download Manager for iOS

Files app (not to be confused with Apple’s app of the same name) is quite simple in its look and feel, yet powerful to handle any type of download link we throw at it. The app has four sections, a web browser, a download manager, a section for the downloaded files, and Settings. The built-in web browser provides specific settings for the default search engine, user agent (Mobile Safari or Firefox), and custom MIME types that define how the app handles different types of download links. You can either type a complete URL or use a search phrase on the browser’s unified search bar.

Files - Download Manager App for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Files also have a Safari Bookmarklet, which allows you to transfer download links from the iOS Safari browser to the Files’ built-in browser, where you can download from the available links. Even if a particular file type is not supported for download, you can manually define how the app handles it, by adding it as a new MIME type. Alternatively, you can tap & hold the download link and select Download Linked File As option.

Note: If the download URL string is long, the action choices for tap & hold may not be visible fully, especially on small screen devices, such as the 4-inch iPhone. You need to scroll through the list of available options and select the preferred one instead. The Downloads tab shows all the active downloads, along with their download speed and progress. You can tap on the download and select Copy Address from the pop-up to get its source URL or tap on the stop/resume button next to the download to control the operation as preferred.

The app could also serve as a file manager, with a built-in document viewer for PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, HTML, and RTF file formats, ability to extract ZIP and RAR archives, photo viewer, and media player.

The app provides decent import and export options for exchanging files with other apps, and also with other devices, including AirDrop/Share menu, iTunes File Sharing, FTP transfer, etc.

The free version of Files provides for limited downloads and storage. To remove the limitation, you can upgrade to the Pro version via in-app purchase, for $4.99.

Being a native solution, Safari’s Download Manager provides the best overall experience when it comes to downloading files on your iPhone and iPad, especially with background downloads.

But as described above, a few of the third-party solutions offer some advanced features, such as automatic media grabbing, additional protocol integrations, better download management options, etc.

Make your own iPhone Safari download manager with Shortcuts

By Charlie Sorrel • 11:00 am, March 13, 2019

  • Top stories

Who doesn’t enjoy a well-managed download?

One of the biggest shortcomings of mobile Safari is downloading files. It’ll do it just fine, but it loads everything as if it were a web page. PDFs, ZIPs, MP3s: They all get loaded right there into the current page, whereupon you have to use the Open In… feature to save the file.

Perhaps even worse — you don’t have any idea how long the download is going to take. All you have to go on is the loading progress bar up in the URL bar, which creeps along and really only offers two states: “not done yet” and “done.”

Today we will fix that by whipping up a download manager using the Shortcuts app. Let’s go.

Safari download shortcut

Today we’ll make a simple three-step shortcut that does a few things. It lets you download a file in mobile Safari, rename it, and save it to your Dropbox. Here it is:

Just drag these actions to make your shortcut.

As you can see, the shortcut:

  • Accepts only URLs
  • Downloads the content of the URL (this is the file)
  • Prompts you to rename the download
  • Saves it to a downloads folder on Dropbox

To use this shortcut, you just long-press on a link in Safari, choose Share , tap Shortcuts , and then tap the shortcut you made.

Custom options

You can of course customize these steps. The first step should be left alone, but you can have the shortcut save the download in your iCloud Drive instead of Dropbox. If you do this, you’ll only be able to choose the Shortcuts folder in iCloud Drive, but you can specify a subfolder. That would look like this:

Tap the ‘Service’ to choose between Dropbox and iCloud Drive.

Rename Safari downloads on iOS

I also added a step to rename the file before it is saved. For many people, this shortcut might be worth using just for that. There’s no way to rename a file when you save it on iOS, so you must use a shortcut to do it. (Or find the file later in the Files app , and rename it there.)

You could also have the shortcut automatically name the file by date or some other parameter. To do this, just tap in the Name field of the Set Name action, and pick one of the automatic options that appear above the keyboard. It looks like this:

You can do some complex auto-renaming with Shortcuts' built-in tools.

If you tap the Contents of URL button in that list, you get all kinds of crazy options. You could, for instance, choose to rename the file with the title of the web page you’re downloading from. You can also stack these name labels, adding the date into the mix, and so on.

Shortcuts’ renaming options are quite powerful.

Dig around the left sidebar to see what else you can do. And remember that, although my screenshots come from an iPad, all this works on iPhone, too.

One final tip: You can switch to another app and leave Safari downloading a large file. If Safari gets killed in the background, your download will too. But for all but the biggest files, you can just let it run while you go do something else.

This tweak upgrades Safari’s download manager with media importing & more

safari download manager ios 14

When Apple released iOS & iPadOS 13 last Summer, one of the exciting new features that the company added to the iPhone and iPad experience for the very first time was a built-in download manager for the native Safari web browser. As necessary as this was to make Apple’s platforms both usable and competitive with the rest of the mobile device market, it still left quite a bit to be desired — par for the course when it comes to Apple.

Jailbreakers have significantly more options to choose from when it comes to augmenting this user experience, and with the help of a recently-updated jailbreak tweak dubbed Safari Downloader+ by iOS developer Jalal Ouraigua , jailbreakers can both expect more and get it, especially in terms of the Safari file-downloading experience. The all-new version 5.0 of the Safari Downloader+ adds full support for iOS & iPadOS 13 for the first time.

So why would users need Safari Downloader+ following the release of iOS 13? The simple answer is that this tweak incorporates a plethora of handy utilities to make downloading certain things from different websites easier.

For starters, Safari Downloader+ includes handy buttons to aid with downloading media from popular video hosting websites including Dailymotion, Facebook , Instagram, Vimeo, and YouTube to name a few. Then, after downloading said media, users will then be able to easily import it to their media library for offline viewing whenever they want.

As depicted in the screenshot examples above and below, Safari Downloader+ bakes itself directly into the Safari web browser user interface. It appears as a download button just to the left of the tabs button, and by tapping on it, users can interface with all their previous downloads and configure the Safari Downloader+ tweak however they want to suit their use case.

safari download manager ios 14

You’ll also notice that the media downloading and importing options are simplistic and easy to follow. Upon using the tweak on a supported media-hosting website, you can choose the download quality, where it gets saved, and then monitor download progress via the built-in download manager interface. Once finished, you can use powerful tools to fetch metadata and then incorporate those downloads into your native media library via any app of your choosing.

As for configuration, Safari Downloader+ comes with plenty:

safari download manager ios 14

Here, users can:

  • Automatically detect MME types
  • Enable or disable the “open in YouTube” option
  • Enable or disable the “show welcome slides” option
  • Enable or disable vibration upon completed download
  • Enable or disable notifications upon completed download
  • Enable or disable two-finger swipe to dismiss
  • Select supported file types and compressed file types
  • Configure the maximum number of allowed concurrent downloads
  • Configure the maximum number of allowed concurrent imports
  • And much more…

In short, while iOS 13’s native Safari download manager lets you download files that were meant to be downloaded, it tends to be somewhat limited when compared with Safari Downloader+’s built-in media downloading capabilities for third-party websites. Furthermore, iOS 13’s native Safari download manager doesn’t come with the same powerful media importing capabilities that Safari Downloader+ does, which means the tweak brings a lot more to the table then a stock iOS 13 device would.

Those interested in giving Safari Downloader+ a try can purchase the tweak from the Packix repository for $3.99 . Safari Downloader+ supports jailbroken iOS 12 and 13 devices, which also makes it a great option even for iOS 12 users who don’t have access to a native Safari download manager at all.

Do you plan to upgrade your device’s native Safari downloading capabilities with the new Safari Downloader+ tweak? Share why or why not in the comments section below.

How To : Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Safari has always done a great job at letting you browse the web, but it has never so much as offered a way to download files locally. Other apps have stepped in to help fill the gap, but they never felt as integrated into the iPhone as a native downloads manager would. They aren't needed anymore though, because Apple added one in iOS 13 , pushing Safari on the iPhone closer to its sibling on the Mac.

The new download manager includes several powerful features, including default folders, file previews, and downloading in the background. By working with the Files app, Safari lets you download a file locally on your device, to iCloud, or to any supported third-party app. You can also monitor the progress of downloads, stop, start, or cancel them, and jump straight to their location in the Files app, right from Safari's new downloads manager.

  • Don't Miss: 200+ Exciting New iOS 13 Features for iPhone

Step 1: Change the Default Folder Location

By default, iOS will create a new "Downloads" folder in iCloud Drive and set it as your default download location. You can change that to a different location inside iCloud Drive or to a folder within "On My iPhone" so that downloads are locally contained and not eating up iCloud storage.

As of now, you can't select folders in third-party apps in Files , such as Adobe Creative Cloud , Amazon Drive , Baidu Network Disk , Box , Boxcryptor , Dropbox , Google Drive , Microsoft OneDrive , and SugarSync . Hopefully, that happens one day.

To change your default download location, open the Settings app, then tap Safari –> Downloads. You can then select one of the suggested places or tap "Other" to choose another directory. Third-party apps may be able to support this option in iOS 13, so if your preferred location is grayed out, you may need to wait for a future app update.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 2: Choose How to Keep the List Clean

You can also choose when items are removed from the download manager's list of downloads. Removing downloads will not delete the actual file but will just remove it from the list to keep it from getting cluttered with downloads. By default, it's set to remove items from the manager after one day, but there are a few other options.

To see or change the options, open Settings, and go to Safari –> Downloads –> Remove Download List Items. There, you can choose to have items removed after one day or as soon as they finish downloading. You can also make them never disappear automatically with the manual option, meaning you're responsible for cleaning up the downloads manager yourself.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 3: Start a Download in Safari

Downloading a file from Safari works just like you'd expect. Tapping a link to a downloadable file will open a dialog box confirming you would like to download the file. Once you tap "Download," the file will be added to the downloads manager and start downloading. It will continue downloading until the entire file is downloaded, even if you close Safari or leave the webpage.

If the file you are downloading is something Safari can view, such as media (audio, videos, or images) or documents (PDFs), the download dialog box will also have an option to load the file right in Safari instead of downloading it. To view the file immediately, select the "View" option in the dialog box.

Finally, if you have an external keyboard connected, you can also hold the Option key and tap a link to skip the confirmation dialog and immediately start downloading the file. You can also Option left-click if you're taking advantage of the new ability in iOS 13 to connect a wireless mouse .

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 4: Save to a Different Location Than the Default

If you'd like to download a file to somewhere other than the default location you've selected for Safari, tap the "View" option when presented with the download dialog. After Safari loads the file, tap the share button, and choose "Save to Files." From there, you can select any location in the Files app to save the file to, as long as the location is supported.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 5: View Downloads in Progress

Once your file starts downloading, Safari shows its progress with a small loading bar underneath the downloads manager icon to the right of the address bar. Note that this icon won't appear until you start a download and will be hidden once the download list is cleared.

If you have several files downloading, the progress bar will show you the overall progress across all of the files you are downloading. To view the progress of individual files, tap the downloads manager icon. Each downloading file will have a small blue line below the file name showing how much of the file is left to get.

Finally, the downloads manager icon next to the address bar will bounce to let you know when all of your files have been downloaded.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 6: Pause, Restart, or Cancel a Download

Tap the blue "X" icon next to the file name to pause the download. When you do, the "X" will be replaced with a circular arrow, which you can tap to continue the download. If you'd like to cancel the download, pause the download, then swipe to the left on the file to reveal a "Delete" button you can tap. Alternatively, long-swipe to the left to cancel immediately.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 7: Preview a Downloaded File

To see a preview of a file after it's downloaded, tap the file in the downloads manager. (Note that not all files can be previewed.) If it has a preview, a new view will open where you can view the file, share it, and even edit it in some cases. For instance, videos can be rotated and trimmed, and you can use the built-in markup tool for images and PDFs. Audio files will automatically play after tapping them, and the only thing you can do besides using basic playback controls is sharing the file.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 8: View the File Location in the Files App

The downloads manager will also allow you to jump right to where the file is saved in the Files app. Tap the magnifying glass icon to the right of the file you'd like to go to, and the Files app will open at the file's location. If the file is a type that can't be previewed (for instance, .zip files), tapping the file name will also jump to the file's location in the Files app.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

Step 9: Clear Downloads from the Downloads Manager

Files in the downloads manager will be cleaned out based on the option you set in the Safari settings mentioned above. If you selected the "Manual" option, or if you'd like to clear a file out early, either short-swipe left on a file to reveal a "Delete" button that you can tap or long-swipe to the left to remove the file immediately.

If you'd like to remove all of the files from the downloads manager, tap the "Clear" button in the upper right. Note that clearing the files from the downloads manager will not delete the actual files, only their names in the list. Erasing the file will need to be done from the Files app or a third-party app if stored there.

How to Use Safari's New Downloads Manager in iOS 13

When the iPhone first came out, it was among the first to finally offer a full HTML web browser in the palm of your hand. With a proper downloads manager, combined with the Files app, the iPhone is finally moving closer to being a full mobile version of Safari on the desktop.

I have a question I hope you can answer, I've searched and I can't find one. On my iPad Pro if I wanted to save something from Safari first I'd creat a PDF if it wasn't in that format then save to iBooks. After updating to iOS 13 I can no longer find the iBook option to save to? Do you know if there is a way I can restore iBooks to continue to save to it?

Another thing, another iOS 13 issue I have is my Safari tabs keep closing after a few days and I don't want them to. I did selected manual under Safari and hoped it would then stop but no, all but 2or 3 continue to close every few days. Do you by chance have any thoughts on how to stop that?

Safari on iPhone

Dreams do come true. Well, at least if wildest imagination is limited to download large files on your iPhone or iPad using Safari. Well, in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 you can actually do that. Safari now has a built-in download manager where it lets you download files straight to the local storage (or iCloud Drive). Here’s how you can use this feature to download files in Safari on iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.

Safari Download Manager in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13: Everything You Need to Know

As with many features in iOS, the download manager in Safari is hidden until it’s conjured (or called up). Unlike Safari on the Mac, you won’t find a download button in the top toolbar.

Step 1: Go to a page which contains the download link and tap on it.

Step 2: You’ll see a popup asking if you want to download the file (you’ll see the full name of the file but you won’t see the file size). Here, click on the Download button.

Step 3: Now, you’ll see a new Downloads icon in the top-right corner of the Safari app, next to the URL field. Tap on it and you’ll see all available downloads. And yes, you can download multiple files at the same time.

Step 4: From here, you can see the progress of the download. You’ll be able to see the file size, but it won’t show the download speed. If you want to stop or pause the download, you can tap on the X icon. If a paused download can be resumed, you’ll see the Resume button as well.

Step 5: To delete a download, swipe left on it and tap on the Delete button.

Step 6: Once the download is finished, you’ll be able to tap on the file to open it in the Files app. And once you can see it in the Files app, you can preview it or open it if it’s in a supported format (MP3, PDF, Images and so on). And if not, you can tap on the Share button to open it in a compatible app.

This means that you can now download any file in Safari, without the need for a third party download manager and then you can use Files to open the file in any supported app. For example, you can download a DOCX file from an online source and then open it in World app via Files. And now that Files app supports external storage in both iPhone and iPad, you can actually transfer a downloaded file to a flash drive (this even works for sending books to Kindle).

Once you start using the download manager, the first thing you’ll want to do is to change the default download location. By default, every download goes directly to a Downloads folder in iCloud Drive. Now that’s great if you’re on a 50GB or 200GB plan. All your downloads will be available across all your Apple devices.

But if you’re on the free 5GB plan, a couple of downloads will take a major hit to your available space.

It’s best to change the download location to a local folder on your iPhone and iPad (And finally it’s great that Apple not only lets you choose local storage as a downloading location, it also lets you create and move folders in local storage).

To change the download location, go to Settings > Downloads (in General section) > On my iPhone . This will switch to a Downloads folder on your local iPhone or iPad. But you can go a step further and change this location as well by going to the Other option.

I tested this using a 2GB iOS 13 beta file from Apple’s servers and the process was slow at the start but after a couple of minutes, it completed the while 2GB download in the background, on its own.

iOS 13 has added a download manager to Safari

  • Safari has a download manager in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13
  • You can now download files from the Internet
  • These can be stored on your iOS device or on the cloud

Over the years, iOS has slowly but steadily been moving towards becoming a desktop-class operating system. Several features added with recent versions of iOS have been pointing towards this and with iOS 13 — as well as iPadOS 13 — they only cement the view that one day iOS devices will be able to do almost everything laptops can. With iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, seen the addition of support for Bluetooth mice, PS4 and Xbox One controllers, and some nifty tweaks to Safari. One of these Safari tweaks is the addition of a proper download manager with iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, which is a big feature that's flown under the radar a bit.

Yes, Safari has a proper download manager and you can download pretty much any file off the Internet on this browser now. Let's first cover the basics.

Where is Safari download manager?

Just open Safari on iOS 13 or iPadOS 13 and tap any download link on the Internet. Now you'll see a downloads icon on the top right in Safari. Tap that downloads link and a list of recently downloaded items will appear.

Download Files Safari IOS 13

Dreams do come true. Well, at least if wildest imagination is limited to download large files on your iPhone or iPad using Safari. Well, in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 you can actually do that. Safari now has a built-in download manager where it lets you download files straight to the local storage (or iCloud Drive). Here’s how you can use this feature to download files in Safari on iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.

Safari Download Manager in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13: Everything You Need to Know

Download any file on your iPhone or iPad with Safari Downloader+ tweak for Safari

safari download manager ios 14

Safari is one of the most popular mobile web browser and thanks to the recent changes that were added to it with the release of iOS 7 it has got even better than ever before. While Safari is a great way to browse the internet on iPhone and iPad it lacks a major feature i.e. the ability to download files from the web. Same is true for any third party iOS browser since Apple does not allow iOS users to download files from the web.

However if your device is jailbroken then you don’t have to worry about Apple’s pointless restrictions. A new tweak called Safari Downloader+ is yet another hack for Safari that enables it to download stuff from the web. This tweak supports a wide range of file types and features that make it a must have for every iOS user.

The best thing about the Safari Downloader+ tweak is that it is fully integrated in the Safari browser so you can initiate downloads and manage them right from the Safari.app. Once downloaded you can export the files in your favorite third party applications such as Dropbox, VLC and iFile.

Safari Downloader+ is a two in one tweak that not only enables file downloading in Safari but also allows users to download videos from Youtube.

Some of the features of this download manager for Safari browser include simultaneous downloads, support for a wide range of file types and extensions, ability for users to control concurrent downloads, badge notifications showing how many downloads are in progress, ability to change browser’s UserAgent so the desktop version of the website can be viewed and more.

Safari Downloader+ is a universal tweak, which means you only have to purchase it once for both iPhone and iPad. It fully supports the newer 64-bit iOS devices and works on iOS 7 as well as iOS 6.

You can download it for $3.50. The price seems a bit excessive but if downloading stuff on your iPhone or iPad is important to you then its a small price to pay.

If you are looking for a free solution then try Safari Download Enabler tweak .

There is no safari downloader on india’s AppStore

this can only be installed using Cydia on jailbroken devices

Lol, this guy wrote his thoughtless comment 2 months ago – Don’t think he’ll ever read your reply today.

Looking at the time of your reply, bet you searched for an compatible Safari Download Tweak for iOS 8 too. I only saw a list where Chrome Downloader was listed under the compatible tweaks. Anybody knowing about Safari?

Last year (iOS 7) it was a two month wait until Safari Download Enabler came out. Luckily for free, but who knows when it gets updated. (Paid for Safari Download Manager in iOS 6, but the guy still hasn’t updated just for 7 – despite promises otherwise. Hope the Enabler Dev handles that different).

Would also consider buying Downloader+ for iOS 8. At least that would show the dev’s updating his tweaks (hate paying for tweaks which get abandoned for the next iOS version)

Hahahahaha, You are 100% correct! I am defiantly going to buy idownloader+ Once they allow us to buy tweaks on iOS 8

Hehheh, the timing was your tell 😉 Thx for your reply. Being able to DL through Safari is one of the coolest features after a JB 🙂

I’m using Downloads HD (or Downloads for iPad from the App Store) for now. Like last year until Enabler arrived. Works really fine but of course there’s no possibility to choose a Download Destination with this. Real hassle to always have to cut & paste the files to different directories but it still beats downloading through Safari alone where you don’t see any DL progress/speed and thus have no idea when this darn “Open With …” screen appears.

iDownloader? Thanks for the tip – Cydia buying is open again but can’t find any iDownloader. Only found a repo from a guy named iDownloader 😉

Is there a typo or did you mean the tweak mentioned in this article (Downloader+)? Afaik it’s not compatible with iOS 8 atm. Tried Download Enabler as some iOS 7 apps/tweaks also work with 8 (like iFile, iCleaner or Mobile Terminal) but alas Enabler isn’t one of them.

My mistake, it’s “Safari downloader+” THX for ur wishes have a nice week end two

Thanks mate 🙂

Did you end up buying it (if yes did it work)? Couldn’t even purchase it in Cydia if I wanted to (product not supported in your iOS version). Sucks that so many devs seem to lose interest in updating their apps after every new iOS release.

Best wishes

Yea so far this tweak and all similar ones are not working ! That’s very frustrating!!! Will let u know if they did

Thx. Same for me if I end up discovering something working

just searched, if you don’t know already Safari Downloader+ (the one named in the article) is finally iOS 8 compatible. The creator updated it, apparently he still needs to fix the “Import Media” feature, everything else should work fine. Will buy it now.

Good news is – especially considering the little higher price than similar not (yet?) compatible tweaks, apparently it’s also for Youtube DLs

Thx a lot I’ll buy it now ! Can’t wait

Wow fast reply 🙂

Just tried it out – Works fine. Little unused to that it’s an own app. The screen up in the article (with the DL speed) doesn’t appear for now, but browsing, DL location etc work well. Just no DL speed and progress at the moment but when the DL is finished shortly a little blue bar appears in the upper right screen … Lol

Sure those small things’ll get fixed too but all in all I’m happy finally a Safari DL tweak has arrived for iOS 8 😉

Where can I find the ios8 version.. What source ?

Just the normal Big Boss Repo in Cydia – But you need a jailbroken iPhone/iPad to be able to download/use it. (I take it from your question that you maybe haven’t – If that’s the case – and you are on any iOS version below iOS 8.1.1 – a Jailbreak is possible and not too hard. There a plenty of step-by-step tutorials out there but it’s basically just plugging your iDevice into your Computer, starting the downloaded Jailbreak Program for you iOS Version and wait a few minutes until it’s done. After that you’re able to customize your iDevice in pretty much any way you want (like with a downloading app for Safari). Before doing it however, read up a bit about it and decide if it’s for you.)

Uninstalled this again – Alas even though updated for iOS 8, the app made Safari constantly crash on my iPad Air. Hope it runs better for you.

If not I stumbled over an awesome alternative. There’s a browser in the App Store called iCab and it’s great! It has so many more features than Safari (much more search engines, better operability, settings for nearly everything). But best of all, it also has a very well implemented download function!

Besides only being half the price of the Downloader one never has to wait for (maybe-)updates of Cydia tweaks anymore – As it is an official App Store App and also works for non-jailbroken.

Can’t believe I haven’t discovered this app sooner. People always talk about Chrome or Dolphin in terms of alternative browsers. Of course, they’re free but with all the features and the awesome download function iCab’s more than worth its 2 bucks.

I prefer using safari, but thx a lot for the advice ill keep it in m y mind

i recently updated to iOS 8.1.2, had this tweak already purchased when i was on iOS 7 which was working relatively fine except for Safari crashing 6 times out of 10 and i thought upgrading might fix the problem but i’m now discovering that this cannot download ANY video types in Safari

Safari Download Manager

DHowett/safaridownloader

Folders and files, repository files navigation.

This is the official open-source release of Safari Download Manager.

Safari Download Manager is a reasonably complex tweak that adds a desktop-class download manager to Safari.app on iPhoneOS 3.1 to iOS 6.x.

If you learn something great from this code, or write anything cool using it, you should send me an e-mail ! I'd be happy to answer any questions you have as well, so long as you're not asking why it doesn't support iOS 7 and beyond ;).

Building SDM

SDM was historically compiled using Theos . The Makefile expects for the framework/ directory to contain an appropriate version of Theos; it'll probably not work exceedingly well with newer versions, though we certainly hope that it does.

Safari Download Manager is available under the 3-Clause BSD License.

In short, you can do pretty much anything you want with it: bundle it in a closed-source project, modify it without releasing your changes, and so on. Your end of the bargain, however, is that you must include the license/copyright notice in binary and source redistributions, and that you can't use the Safari Download Manager name, "SDM", my name, francis's name, or the name of Cocoanuts, LLC to endorse or promote your project.

Additionally, if you do release a derivative on Cydia, I ask that you choose another bundle identifier. net.howett.safaridownloader is forever retired.

For more details, check out LICENSE in the root of this repository!

  • SDM's icon isn't included in this release.
  • We used icons from the Tango Desktop Project for our filetype icons, and they are in the public domain.

iOS 17.4: You Need to Download the iPhone Update Right Now

Apple said the update addresses two issues that could be actively exploited.

The Apple logo with a padlock on top of it

Apple released iOS 17.4 on Tuesday , more than a month after the tech giant released iOS 17.3 . While the latest update brings new emojis  to all users and new app store capabilities to people in the European Union, it also patches a handful of issues Apple said might be actively exploited.

CNET Tech Tips logo

To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update , tap Install Now and follow the onscreen prompts.

According to Apple , iOS 17.4 patches two security issues, which affect your iPhone's kernel and RTKit. The kernel is the software at the core of your operating system, while RTKit is Apple's real-time operating system. A real-time operating system is used when a large number of events must be accepted or processed in a certain amount of time, according to the computer science resource site Geeks for Geeks .

Apple writes that in both instances, "An attacker with arbitrary kernel read and write capability may be able to bypass kernel memory protections."

Memory protections control how much memory a process has access to. According to Geeks for Geeks , these protections can stop software from taking over an excessive amount of memory, which could harm other software on your device or cause you to lose some of your data. Your system could be severely damaged if a malicious actor were to bypass these protections.

The patches in iOS 17.4 also address a few other issues, like a private browsing bug in Safari, which could cause your private locked tabs to be momentarily visible while switching tab groups. Apple didn't say that these other issues could be actively exploited.

For more on iOS, here are all the new features in iOS 17.4 , what was included in iOS 17.3 and our iOS 17 cheat sheet .

iOS 17.4's new browser choice screen explained — Apple displays randomized list of 11 most-downloaded Safari alternatives

Choose wisely.

iPhone 13 mini in hand

Apple has revealed how iOS 17.4 will display its list of alternative browsers on iPhones in the EU as part of the company’s wider compliance with the Digital Markets Act, which takes effect this week.

The headline change to iOS is, of course, alternative app marketplaces , which will let users download apps from outside the App Store. However, Apple is also being forced into changes around how it displays browser settings to its users. Specifically, it must now offer users “a new choice screen that provides EU users an additional way to choose a default web browser from a list of options.” While choosing a new browser in iOS has been around for years, this new prompt will be displayed to every EU iPhone user the first time they open Safari after updating to iOS 17.4, and when purchasing a new iPhone.

The screen, at first glance, is quite confusing for one obvious reason: there doesn’t seem to be any semblance of order or design to the list of choices. One exuberant commenter noted on X “did they print out icons of all of the browsers, put them in a cup, shake it around, throw them on the floor, and list them in the order they fell out in because that is the only explanation I can think of.” Turns out, that’s pretty much it.

Thanks to the EU we have one more screen during the iPhone onboarding 🤡Not everyone knows what a "browser" is, far from it. Why not ask for a default music player, default mail app, default camera app, while we're at it 😅 https://t.co/ktGuYRDVMa pic.twitter.com/CRBzNOWxnn March 5, 2024

iOS 17 Browser choice screen

Apple notes that to be eligible for consideration, browsers must have the Default Browser Entitlement available to developers and have been downloaded “by at least 5,000 users across all the EU App Store storefronts on iPhone in the prior calendar year.” Apple selects up to 11 of these for the browser choice screen in addition to Safari, updating the list once per calendar year.

Apple says, “on a user’s device browsers will be shown in a randomized order per user,” meaning no one will ever see the same list. Apple has even listed the current browser cohort for each of the 27 eligible EU countries on its website alphabetically for ease. A couple of big names stand out and are present on every list, notably Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera. However, there are also some names you probably haven’t heard of, including Onion Browser, Yandex, and hilariously in Sweden, Blackberry Access.

Figures published Wednesday by Opera and shared with iMore reveal the results of a 4,000-person survey conducted across the EU, which show 83% of mobile device users are open to testing a new browser. While 91% said that more choice and transparency when choosing a browser was important to them, 49% said they had never changed their default browser, and 20% didn’t even know they had the option. Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera said, “This is an exciting moment for Opera and the European tech scene in general… We believe that open digital ecosystems are better for businesses, consumers, and society. And as a European-made challenger browser, we relish the opportunity to more fairly compete against the defaults – especially when the vast majority of the respondents we surveyed said they were considering trying out a new browser after March 6th.”

While the browser choice screen might be a welcome change to some users, all of the browsers on offer will run on Apple’s WebKit framework, meaning all of the differences are really surface level. Part of Apple’s major changes announced for iOS also includes new frameworks and APIs for developing browser engines other than WebKit, which will let rivals like Chrome and Edge build their own browsers from the ground up, should they so choose. There are no new native browsers on the horizon as yet, however, so for now the EU is stuck with this browser choice screen.

The latest version of iOS 17 complete with these changes is available to download on all of Apple's best iPhones now.
